publisher’s note
H
ello… to all avid friends, readers and neighbors of bask! By the time this issue reaches you, spring will have sprung, with hope of a plethora of color and greenery ahead.
As I sat down to write this note, I couldn’t help but recall something beautiful that I witnessed recently. While driving up the coast, a rare and unusual rainstorm hit OC. With all its magnificent thunder and flashes of lightning, came a sight that I personally have never seen here: snow! Yes, you read that right. Beautiful, fluffy white snow, right on the sands of our own Huntington Beach shores! What? I was in disbelief, and remained so, even as I shot a picture with my cell phone and quickly began sharing it with anyone and everyone I knew. Despite my state of disbelief, I was simultaneously in awe, and appreciative, for where I live. There is always something beautiful happening here, which provides all of us with interesting conversation, whether it’s being conducted over coffee at Peet’s or Starbucks, or cocktails at the Montage or St. Regis. There is never a dull moment here—even our white beaches are sometimes whiter than others. Oh, how I love Orange County!
This spring brings our Health & Wellness issue, which seems appropriate for the time of year, as all of us start the beginning of a new year wanting to improve our health and lifestyles. This intention always seems to go along perfectly with the Southern California sunshine and optimistic attitudes of Californians! As you peruse the current issue of bask, take notice of our new section, “Southern California’s Masters of Trade.” We are very excited to bring this ongoing section to our readers. With it comes our beautiful fashion pages that we were most happy to shoot on location at Giracci Vineyards and Farms in Silverado, CA. If you haven’t had the pleasure of visiting there, please take time and do; it’s a wonderful, family-owned property that makes you feel welcome from the very first moment you’re there. Tell them bask sent you, and be sure to give a pat to Valentino, the property’s Great Dane, and the pooch you see on the cover of this issue... he’s just as regal as can be! Until next time my friends, enjoy our beautiful spring season.

editor’s note
I
somehow always feel that every issue of bask published will be my favorite, our best yet. I am so grateful and fortunate for a career that I am not only passionate about, but also truly love. And, ultimately, it all boils down to the people with whom I work, and the wonderful stories surrounding us all. Although not usually one to take many selfies, I couldn’t resist an improptu photo opportunity with my son during our last trip to London. Read about our favorite discoveries in bask Beyond on page 81.
Every day is something new, exciting and full of creative ideas. The same is, of course, true of this issue. Naturally, it thrills me from start to finish, especially as my thoughts trail back to all that went into producing it. I can’t help but reflect on our spring fashion pages, featuring the lovely Lisa Harrington, shot on location at Giracci Vineyards in Silverado Canyon… a vineyard in Orange County, who knew? Anything and everything that could have possibly gone well did—a turn of fortune that allowed our photographer, the talented Tony Florez, to capture some simply exquisite shots, which you’ll see on page 92.
Just as the lush surrounds of Giracci Vineyards flawlessly call to mind the beauty of spring in Orange County—leaving winter a fond but faint memory—this issue’s editorial expresses the very same sentiment. It is hard to believe that just a few months ago I was traversing the weathered streets of lovely London, where I revisited some of my favorite haunts, as told in “Postcards from London.” But, alas, spring has come, and with it, a bounty of fresh finds and happenings. Take writer Jenny Peters’ love letter to Charleston, “Antebellum Allure,” highlighting the most savory sights and cuisine in the South Carolina charmer, or the countless shows and events on the docket right here at home, all found in our “Culture Calendar.” Also, be sure to take some time to peruse the pages of Culture in Print for bask’s “Book of the Moment,” the Assouline title Gypset Trilogy, picked by publishers Prosper and Martine Assouline. Ironically, as this issue closes, I look forward to the many arrivals of spring— namely all the wonderful stories and people I will encounter in preparing our next edition. After all, every day brings with it something new and beautiful. Seasons do the same.

1 Jenn Thornton writer With magnificent stones and metals as a staple for her bejeweled accessories, the success of Marrin Costello’s burgeoning brand seems to be set in stone, as Jenn Thornton reveals in “Chain Reaction,” a portrait of the designer’s inspirations and her career aspirations. “To me her work really defies categorization,” she says. “Stemming from Marrin’s love of art history and Egyptology, the pieces are, like her, a little boho, a lot glamorous and always very smart.” Jenn’s top-three spring accessories: A lightweight scarf, Jurlique’s rosewater mist and Ali Smith’s latest book, How to Be Both.
3 Jenny Peters writer To taste Southern hospitality at its finest, Jenny Peters took to the history-steeped streets of Charleston, South Carolina for her story “Antebellum Allure,” for which she savored some of the city’s most exquisite architecture and culinary creations. “Every meal I had in Charleston was exemplary, as the culinary scene there is world class,” she shares. “But probably the most imaginative meal I had was at Husk, chef Sean Brock’s place, where I somewhat reluctantly tried fried pig’s ears for the first time and discovered that I adore [it]. Who knew?” Jenny’s top-three spring destinations: Charleston, New Orleans and New York City.
2 Joseph Aldrich writer A true style connoisseur, Joseph Aldrich lends his insight into spring’s best trends for men, from muted tones and classic neutrals to bright colors with plenty of shine. With the upcoming season in mind, he shares, “I’m hoping the ‘one color ensemble’ look takes off ! It’s so easy and versatile, which sounds like an oxymoron, but isn’t!” Joseph’s top-three spring essentials: The stark-white sneaker, a nautical-inspired shirt, and the perfect tan suit.
4 Michelle Lyn writer Nestled in the heart of O’ahu, the picturesque surrounds and tranquil atmosphere of the Aulani Resort inspired a most worthy wellness escape for Michelle Lyn. “The cultural authenticity of the hotel combined with the lush landscaping made Aulani feel like a true Hawaiian escape,” she recalls, “[while] the tranquil lagoon lent itself to a relaxing environment, encouraging you to slow down and appreciate the natural beauty.” Michelle’s top-three destination spas: Les Sources de Caudalie (France), Rosewood Mayakoba (Mexico) and Miraval Resort (Arizona).

5 Ana Maria Martinez-Stumpo designer In choosing any of its “color of the year” hues— Marsala for 2015—Pantone takes many factors into consideration, as did furniture designer Ana Maria Martinez-Stumpo to produce her piece “Interior Motives,” focusing on the touted tint. Coveted for its versatility, Marsala is perfect for creating combination colors schemes, with Ana Maria revealing Marsala and dusty pinks as her favorite option, one she describes as “romantic, feminine and inviting.” Ana Maria’s topthree places to find spring design inspiration: Houzz, Pintrest and design magazines. 6 Tony Florez photographer Capturing every moment of an exquisite spring afternoon amid the breathtaking surrounds of Giracci Vineyards for this issue’s photo shoot was not difficult for photographer Tony Florez. “With the ground being so green from the rain we had, it gave [the shoot] a real artistic look,” he says, crediting the various other colors, too. All, he adds, made it seem as if “spring was coming.” Tony’s top spring getaway locales: Napa, Malibu, the South of France and Rome.

CHAIN REACTION From beads to bijoux, success for jewelry designer Marrin Costello is set in stone.
Jewelry designer Marrin Costello has always led something of a charmed life. Her “obsession” for making baubles began in childhood, when the then 7-year-old received a bead kit that sparked in her both creative urge and entrepreneurial ambition. At 10, she was manning booths at craft fairs; not long after, she was commandeering retail accounts at boutiques nationwide. As a UCLA collegian, she studied art history and immersed herself in Egyptology. Today, the 20-something tastemaker heads MARRIN COSTELLO, her burgeoning accessories brand that’s based in Beverly Hills but has a national following. The byproduct of all this industriousness is, of course, bona fides—in Costello’s case, a brand bearing her name, red-carpet credibility and pop-ups in chic places. All point to a prodigious output; but more innately, talent and taste. Magnificent stones and lustrous metals define Costello’s multifunctional creations, with their made-to-layer array including everything from necklaces and rings to anklets and earrings. Confessing to living and breathing her brand, the rising-star designer arranges these pieces (“all handmade with love in Los Angeles,” she beams) with terrific verve and a sophistication that suggests a much broader importance to accessorizing than mere fashion frivolity. The very word, in fact—accessorizing—incites in Costello a kind of jubilance (the drapes of a chain, the tangle of bracelets, the jingle of rings, just think of the possibilities).
While architecture and geometry are Costello collection fixtures, she reserves repeat appearances for the pyramid, her passion for the shape springing from her interest in the ancients. None of these influences, however, exact as much sway as Costello’s own cultivated style, which exists somewhere between alluringly of-the-moment and glamorously bohemian—a place where class and carefree collide. Always, Costello makes room for optimism, with her worldliness occasionally giving way to a girl who just wants to have fun, just so long as she’s fully accessorized—the pièce de résistance, you might say.

Here, snippets of a conversation piece with a most gracious jewelry maven. What is your driving creative force? I not only create pieces that I am missing in my own accessories collection, but am also inspired by client requests, nature, and materials I stumble upon while supply-hunting, as well as my education in Egyptology.
How does the ancient culture inform your work? While I initially thought that Egyptology was a random field, my mom reminded me that in fourth-grade history we had creative control to present nearly anything from our textbooks to the class, and I chose to recreate Nefertiti’s collar. Every iconographic detail in the art and architecture of ancient Egypt was intentional. It is this intentionality, attention to detail, and incredibly meticulous craftsmanship that continues to inspire my jewelry designs and elevate their standard of quality. Is there an Egyptian figure that most fascinates you? Hatshepsut was a female pharaoh, and arguably one of the most successful. Able to assert herself and rule successfully in a male-dominated role, her iconography was most often depicted as masculine. It is because of her effort to transcend gender in art and architecture that I find her to be one of the most fascinating figures of the Ancient Egyptian world.
Does being Californian influence your work? The collection embraces “Cali-style” in a multifaceted capacity. For example, in the summer my clients and I will wear body jewelry with our bikinis and cover-ups; in winter I style body chains over form-fitting long sleeve dresses.
How is your product unique? Each piece reflects a medley of simplicity and edginess, with the brand’s uniqueness in its layering abilities when seen in multiples. Meant to be mixed and worn together across all collections for added dimension and depth, the line focuses on fantastic metallics, mixed metals and complimentary colors that turn an ordinary outfit into a polished ensemble.
And the materials? I hand-select and source all materials [from U.S.-based] vendors. The collection is comprised of semi-precious stones and metals, along with a selection of vintage materials for limited-edition pieces. I love working with materials in their natural form or that have a story.
Describe the woman who wears your designs. The MC woman is multifaceted and appreciates the simplicity of wearing a single accessory, while also understanding both the impact and creativity in layering multiple styles. She is a sophisticated, polished woman with an edge, and is not afraid to accessorize. MarrinCostello.com baskmagazine.com

DANISH MODERN For Denmark designer Tine Kjeldsen, inspiration is a home of her own.
If vignetted, Tine Kjeldsen’s early life would include scenes of her mother’s rose-filled flower shop and her Aunt Hanne’s sewing room, where the highly respected seamstress for Lene Bjerre made the future designer her first school dress, along with a lingerie set in fine white cotton with silk edges.
“I was very young when I began showing interest in creating a nice atmosphere,” shares Kjeldsen, who incubated this initial intrigue by decorating her first room, painting it light pink and incorporating different objects, creating small setups. “I loved the fact that it was my own.” As a teen, she turned the space into a small apartment with a bedroom, living room and office space. “No doubt, this was the beginning of my life as an interior decorator,” Kjeldsen confides. Today, as creative director and founder of Tine K Home Collection, the brand she launched in 1999—its impetus found not far from home—Kjeldsen is doing the same thing, only on a much larger scale. “The products,” she shares, “are based on my own taste—if I like it, it will be part of my collection,” one curated with its conceiver’s “passion for beautiful objects, sweet memories, different cultures and great stories.”
“I was very young when I began showing interest in creating a nice atmosphere.” Featuring everything from textiles, lamps and interior objects to ceramics and a wide array of furnishings, with the majority of wares handmade, Tine K Home is no longer a burgeoning brand. Uniquely, though, its commitment to handwork, utility, quality and good taste has never strayed—all are omnipresent attributes each season. This includes 2015 spring/summer, which features new hues, a mix of prints and dyed patterns, cotton cushions and intricately rough weavings. True to form, the collection represents items Kjeldsen covets for her own house in Denmark and summer place in Palma—“it wishes”, she says, “for the same warmth that graced Scandinavia last year.” Kjeldsen especially fancies the hand-painted, block-printed cards for their clean, graphic look, and the extra-large sofa, generously dimensioned to accommodate an entire family— an evergreen encourager in her work. If family and her travels to the likes of Vietnam, Morocco, and Asia are Kjeldsen’s design inspirations, then fresh flowers and candlelight are her indispensables. All, however, are components of her ideal interiors. “As my collection is based on my own ideas,” Kjeldsen says, “I would say that this is my dream.” Dream home, indeed. TineKHome.com

Interior Motives Looking ahead at this year’s trend-setting color and its perfect pair As a furniture and interior designer, I am always looking for the “next big thing” in the design world. After much research and exploration, I’ve narrowed down current candidates to three most likely to define design in 2015. Here, tops of the now-trending. The first—Pantone’s color of the year—has become something of a design movement. For 2015, it’s Marsala. On its own, the color is full-bodied, impactful and sophisticated; when used as an accent to many other hues, it’s bold and courageous. Expect to see Marsala paired with and complemented by blues, teal and dusty pinks, while also reaching beyond the interior realm, where it’s poised for colossal acclaim. Like Pantone’s celebrated paints of past years, this robust reddish-brown is sure to inspire the
50
baskmagazine.com
worlds of fashion, jewelry, and beauty as well.
The second trend is mixed metals in copious combinations and finishes, from chrome and brass to copper and rose-gold. Furniture, home accessories, and decorative hardware are all under the sway of its influence, but expect a prominent presence in accent pieces, such as side and coffee tables, too. Third is smoky glass and mirrors, serving as a practical yet mysterious (and always eyecatching) feature taking shape mostly as framed oversized mirrors or even wall-to-wall surfaces. Together, earthy Marsala with mixed metals flattered by enigmatic glass and mirror surfaces give interiors a sophisticated, organic spark of luster, expressing glamour and luxury in a most unique way.
Color of the Year Marsala accented with flattering teal, smoky surfaces, reflective metals and black embellishments.

This elegant office is a masterful mix of Northern Italian design with clean, crisp lines. Capelli creates a comfortable, yet sophisticated workspace by combining subtle cream colors with dramatic green drapery to enhance the room’s old-world meets modern aesthetic.
Sue Capelli Like all things creative, designing a home starts with a simple concept that grows, finishing as an exquisite, livable work of art—something interior designer and co-founder of Passione Inc., Sue Capelli, pulls off with aplomb. A natural arts lover with a knack for architectural detail, Capelli founded Passione Inc. with her husband, northern Italy native and master of furniture restoration, Giampiero Capelli, the two proving a perfect mix for the company. With a natural penchant for working with clean, crisp lines and open spaces, Capelli largely draws design inspiration from old-worldmeets-new world European architecture, infusing antique furnishings with a modern appeal to create fresh, sophisticated interiors. Her touch, in combination with Giampiero’s unparalleled antique expertise, makes all Passione Inc.’s signature interiors a true labor of love. As Capelli puts it, “I really think our name says it all, Passione, which means passion”—a translation that her life and her work reflects beautifully.

This exquisite dining room is part of a grand estate nestled into the hills overlooking Newport Beach. Ziething mixed exterior structural materials with interior elements to create a fresh, contemporary feel that flawlessly integrates old and new for this bespoke dining space.
Courtney Lawrence Ziething Hailing from Newport Beach, interior designer Courtney Lawrence Ziething was raised with the beauty of Southern California at her doorstep—hence the exquisite coastal splendor she infuses into each of her custom home designs. Parlaying her finely-tuned eye for interiors early on, Ziething worked part-time for a furniture showroom and designed homes for the holidays while still in high school, later receiving a degree in interior design. Inspired by the designs of Frank Lloyd Wright as well as her own travels and love of the outdoors, Ziething infuses a bit of herself into each one of her exceptional projects. “I really love the integration of the exterior environment and pulling that through to the interior of a home,” says Ziething, who not only tailors each home to its individual environment, but also to its inhabitants. For her, working on another’s home is very personal, so with each project she takes a rather timeless approach, striving to create something its recipient will “love and appreciate for many years to come.”

FINE PRINT
Turning the page on another season means a new group of touchstone tomes. From food to fashion to design—plus, a book-of-the-moment pick from the publisher of Assouline—these titles speak volumes, whether dressing up a coffee table or nesting bedside.
1
THE HUNGRY EAR edited by Kevin Young This cornucopia of poetic odes to the likes of butter and bacon from some of the genre’s most ingenious and expressive wordsmiths, from Adrienne Rich to William Carlos Williams, is a feast for the epicurious. Wit, remembrance and a rich representation of wordplay give this finely structured anthology its bite, as it segues from “Short Orders” to “Forbidden Fruit” for a taste of just about everything—all satiating.
FLORAL JEWELS by Carol Woolton This dazzler from the jewelry editor of British Vogue makes for fascinating reading, while also ornamenting one’s décor—consider it bound for a tabletop or display shelf. Charting the bejeweling of botanicals through original sketches, illustrations and gouache paintings— and the magnificent hold of flowers on those who finessed them into finery (designers from Chanel to Dior)—this title features a forward by renowned jeweler Joel Arthur Rosenthal and is, appropriately, organized by season, although the pieces themselves are timeless. 56

Containing new, previously unposted recipes—including savory Peanut Butter Pudding Pops and a Chocolate Obsession Cake that begs the question: Is there any other kind?—this sweet-tooth tome is one guiltless pleasure.

4 WHO WE ARE by Mitchell Gold and Bob Williams Published to coincide with the 25th Anniversary of Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams, the always tasteful twosome have structured not just another coffee table book, but a sumptuous survey of their well-designed life, in which style and philanthropy figure prominently. Curated to riff off the 25 mantras of the designers’ “Who We Are” gracing their stores and catalogs, with each a chapter, crossing into varied realms, from entertaining to interiors to enrichment, for an eclectic source of inspiration in any room.
DESIGN POP by Lisa S. Roberts In this bold, imaginative offering from Rizzoli, design connoisseur Lisa S. Roberts takes objet d’art to the next level with her observations of 82 design objects from boundarypushers of design like Michael Graves, Frank Gehry, Philippe Starck and more. Springing from Roberts’ docu-series My Design Life, this title is an extension of the show’s travels, which trailed Roberts to museums, exhibits and other hubs of design in search of the pieces (whether a reinvention of an outmoded use or the originating of a new material) that have made their way into this important survey—a thoughtful celebration of innovation.

In a striking presentation of graphic portfolios, LACMA flawlessly captures the ideals and aspirations of the Expressionist era with a bountiful display of about 50 works from the enormously gifted artist and playwright Ernst Barlach. Inspired by the deep religiosity of van Gogh’s works as well as his own experiences observing Russian peasants, Barlach’s powerfully expressive art abounds with towering ethereal figures trying to escape material reality for passage to the transcendent realm.

Freshwater Haven An escape to Aulani, a Disney Resort and Spa, offers an unparalleled experience for the whole family, with its luxurious Laniwai Spa, a step into serenity
bask well | by michelle l yn
As a full-time working mother with two children under the age of 4, moments of wellness and relaxation, although much needed, are few and far between. However, when I learned about Aulani, a Disney Resort and Spa, it sounded like the perfect escape for everyone in my family. Located on the Hawaiian island of Oahu, Aulani boasts the world-class Laniwai Spa, a gorgeous beach and lagoon for water activities and the magic of Disney all in one. With the ease of a direct flight from San Diego to Oahu on Hawaiian Airlines sealing the deal, we were off. The moment you board the plane, the warm spirit of Aloha washes over you via a welcoming staff, Hawaiian music and chocolate covered macadamia nuts, of course.
Although I had researched the resort before our trip, the beauty and architecture of Aulani surprised in person. More Hawaiian than Disney, the grand lobby incorporates Hawaiian history and folklore, with mythical Menehune peeking out in unexpected places, leaving hidden Mickeys to be found throughout the hotel. As a Disney property, Aulani is naturally family friendly, yet maintains an air of comfortable luxury without being overtly animated. As Laniwai Spa is located on the first floor of the hotel, you are instantly enveloped by an intoxicating blend of plumeria, coconut, pikake and other tropical aromas the minute you exit the doors. Hawaiian for “freshwater heaven,” Laniwai is truly an oasis, one centered around the healing properties of water. Indeed—from a rainwater suite to a unique outdoor hydrotherapy garden, the gift of water is prevalent throughout the spa.
At hallway’s end, pause at the water installation created by Disney’s famous Imagineers. Featuring a mystical aura, it combines elegantly reflected light, brilliant color and elements of nature. Expect to be asked to return your stone to the water, but while maintaining its inscribed characteristic within.
A brief tour of the Kula Wai Hydrotherapy Garden reveals the only outdoor hydrotherapy garden in Oahu with herbal pools, a reflexology path, six rain showers, cold and hot whirlpools. At the Pulu Bar, a spa mixology station, select an authentic Hawaiian fragrance to be blended with exfoliating cane sugar or sea salt, moisturizing base oils, such as macadamia, kukui or jojoba, and active Hawaiian herbs for a take-home body polish.
“The soothing environment offers the perfect transition to release any stress or concerns and truly relax in the moment.”
The element theme continues on arrival. Guests who enter Laniwai are offered a stone from a bowl, each imprinted with a different word, such as strength or balance, and then are escorted down a hallway of transformation, illuminated by a gentle purple glow, en route to its end, where a reminder to leave the past behind to focus on yourself, in the present, is issued. The soothing environment offers the perfect transition to release any stress or concerns and truly relax in the moment.
For my first of two spa treatments I indulge in the Signature Lomilomi Massage. This traditional Hawaiian massage is passed down from generation to generation by healing kupuna (elders). With a gentle, rhythmic massage incorporating lomilomi sticks and warm river stones, it had me at “Aloha.”
Designed to release tension, pain and fatigue, all while replenishing the mind, body and spirit with positive energy, I have to say that it was one of the most enjoyable massages I’ve ever had— and I’ve been fortunate to have many. In fact, my therapist, Jenna, was so amazing that I booked her to give my husband the same treatment the next day. My second treatment, the Ultra Ageless facial is the ultimate fusion of science and luxury, beginning with an ultrasonic exfoliation to soften and renew the skin, followed by an Oxygen Infusion to restore natural vitality and glow, and ending with light therapy. While not exactly the relaxing experience of a massage (there was a kind of bearable discomfort at times), I really enjoyed the attention to my skin and the fact that, afterwards, it was glowing and dewy.
When you depart the spa, they send you off with a personalized bag of bath salts that correspond to the word on the stone you choose at the beginning of your experience. Coming full-circle, I was surprisingly rejuvenated after an hour or two at the spa and happily maintained my “balance and strength” mantra— even as I attempted to stand-up paddle across the lagoon.
Laniwai Spa features 15 treatment rooms, with a family treatment room and a fitness center in 18,000 square feet of space. OPPOSITE Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa, Hawaii is located next to a tranquil lagoon in Ko Olina, on the island of Oahu.

HEALTH & WELLNESS | DR. BARNES + BASK
thomas barnes, md For Dr. Thomas Barnes, MD—called by many “Dr. Thom”—cosmetic surgery has always been a passion and life pursuit. After attending undergraduate school at USC, he graduated from the USC School of Medicine and completed a residency at UCLA. This Diplomat of the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery is also an internationally known lecturer and media personality, having appeared on many TV and radio shows, most recently The Doctors, EXTRA, Fox News, KTLA News, KCBS and KNBC. He has been in the cosmetic surgery practice in Newport Beach since 1997. Discuss your background in professional medicine. Many have called me a true innovator. I created “Lunchtime Makeovers,” which I presented on Leeza in 1998. I wanted to offer cosmetic surgery procedures that were not as large or scary to my patients. While I also do larger surgeries when needed, I found with my Lunchtime Makeovers, done while patients are awake, I could get great results with less downtime, less discomfort. I coined the term to popularize these minimally invasive procedures, which include: wrinkle face reduction, mini-face and neck tightening, eyelid beautification, body contouring, neck contour beautification, and even hand and facial skin rejuvenation. Patients from all over the world fly into Newport Beach to take advantage of these Lunchtime procedures. They see my YouTube channel, Dr. Thomas Barnes YouTube, and they see the procedures being done [while] I explain every thing I do and why. There are over 100 videos there now! What are some of your other areas of expertise? While I do larger face-lifts, Tickle Liposuction and SmartLipo Laser body contouring procedures, as well as eyelid lifts, I have also created less aggressive versions of these that still get great results and meet my patients’ expectations, which is always the goal. I love to do mini face- and neck lifts, eyelid lifts and body contouring. Changing people’s lives has always been exciting for me, and even more so when they are so happy just days after their procedures. Talk about your role as a laser procedure innovator? I am a known laser expert in the art of wrinkle reduction and skin tightening and have taught many surgeons how to help their patients get the best results. My Fractional C02 Laser and C02 laser can drastically reduce facial wrinkles
and acne scars… My KTP Laser treats bothersome “broken capillaries” of the face. Are any procedures particularly popular for spring? This spring, people are thinking about what their bodies look like because summer is around the corner. The most popular Lunchtime Makeover procedure I do is my Neck Shrink Lift, which was featured on The Doctors. It can literally take 10 years off a man or woman’s appearance—those concerned about a full aging neck—does not involve any cutting or sutures, and is done in under 30 minutes. What is the core of your medical philosophy? Excellent communication is essential with our patients. I want to know exactly what their goals and expectations are so I can tailor my procedures to fulfill their dreams of a slimmer body, a more youthful appearing face and neck, and beautiful skin. After all, that’s why I always wanted to be a cosmetic surgeon—to improve people’s appearances and their lives. Some even say it’s magic! I say it’s just what I love doing.
When not performing cosmetic surgery, what other interests do you pursue? I am also a professional writer, and have written several novels now under consideration for publishing, in addition to producing a movie based on a script I wrote—and I will appear with Christian Bale in the feature Knight of the Cups this spring. I am also in development of my own reality TV series, Lunchtime Makeovers, which is about my practice and [my] unique point of view. When not working, I enjoy spending time in Newport Coast where I live with Lindsay and my 7-yearold daughter Emma, who wants to be a medical doctor one day—or work at Disneyland.

that is why they would select me as their plastic surgeon.
What services does your practice offer? My office provides full-scope, cutting-edge plastic surgery procedures. I also treat a number of patients for chronic wounds and skin cancer. We have a skin health center for men and women. Surgeries are performed at Newport Coast Outpatient Surgery Center (AAAASF-certified and located adjacent to my office). The services of only board-certified anesthesiologists are utilized. What is the most popular procedure? Body contouring and facial rejuvenation. Outstanding natural results without the “done look” keeps my patients happy and returning. My father (Frederick M. Grazer, MD) is credited with introducing liposuction to the United States in 1982. Because of my early exposure to liposuction, my liposuction results are excellent. The Brazilian Buttocks Lift is also extremely popular with the active Newport Beach lifestyle.
Caring, compassion and listening are the cornerstones of my practice. … I am always as close as the phone.
What compelled you to pursue medicine professionally? I would make rounds with my father, who was also a plastic surgeon, when I was 3 and 4 years old. I saw how plastic surgery impacted the lives of others and wanted to do the same thing. I joined my father’s practice after finishing my plastic surgery fellowship and combined many of the techniques he developed with new emerging technologies.
What is the core of your medical philosophy? Caring, compassion and listening are the cornerstones of my practice. Safety and service also are core to my philosophy. I am always as close as the phone. If patients have a concern after surgery, I am available 24 hours a day to answer questions or see them should the need arise. How is your work a reflection of this? My consultations are never rushed and typically last one hour or longer. “Attention to detail” is my motto. A number of surgical nurses who have worked in other facilities comment that I take my time in surgery and am very detail-oriented, and

How do you stay at the cuttingedge of a rapidly evolving industry? I continually attend educational conferences, keeping abreast of the latest techniques. I am on the medical education faculties of several well-known companies. As an assistant clinical professor at UC Irvine, I teach residents cutting-edge techniques. Additionally, I am an instructor of fillers for four different national and international companies.
What services are you excited to introduce in 2015? Refinements in autologus fat grafting for facial rejuvenation, breast augmentation and reconstruction and body contouring. The latest in minimally invasive techniques for facial rejuvenation and the use of growth factors, which harness the science of our own bodies to heal from within. What have your clients taught you? The joy of caring and helping, being fortunate for what we have, and the gift of being healthy.

t might be home to British royalty and a playground to the enviable cast of Downton Abbey, but for me, England also feels like home. For a Southern California native who pines for real weather—for winter to actually feel like winter, in other words—there’s something wonderfully romantic about escaping to London for a holiday spent in colder climes. Perhaps it’s the old buildings, the mystery behind its history, the polite locals, or that in seemingly every place one pops, dimly lit sconces and warm fireplaces abound. Alas, after spending a mere two weeks roaming about England, it’s quite easy to make yourself at home.
GETTING THERE As hard as I try not to, this over-the-top detailed planner undoubtedly leaves packing to the very last minute, which, inevitably, is also the reason I almost always fly out of John Wayne Airport, granting me extra time and no-fuss terminal access when arriving at the eleventh hour. Hence, my midday flight from Santa Ana to Heathrow Airport with a layover in Dallas—an additional eight hours from plus the eight-hour time difference—landed in London the following morning. But, with all the sitting about and complimentary in-flight wine offered, it’s fairly easy—and necessary—to sleep, especially when arriving first thing in the morning. I actually prefer this arrival time, as it allows me to take full advantage of the day ahead, and I find that most hotels expecting international travelers are quite hospitable and willing to accommodate the coming of early birds. Can’t live without: my reliable Tumi Mobile Power Pack designed to charge cell phones and other USB devices.
“It might be home to British royalty and a playground to the enviable cast of Downton Abbey, but for me, England also feels like home.” WHERE TO STAY There are so many spectacular places to stay in London that it’s hard to pick just one. But if I must, the super-luxe Corinthia Hotel in the heart of the city is an elegant venue. This hotel, a Victorian building dating to 1885, boasts spacious, beautifully appointed rooms clad with Italian marble bathrooms and underfloor heating, as well as an incredibly attentive and dedicated service staff (no matter how many times you ring room service). Proximity is a plus, as the hotel is conveniently located near Piccadilly Circus, Leicester Square, Trafalgar Square, Westminster Abbey and Covent Garden, among other cultural landmarks. The icing on the cake: delighting in afternoon tea illuminated by a brilliant Baccarat Chandelier. Alternatively, the boutique-style Haymarket Hotel on Suffolk Place offers a lavish and charismatic atmosphere. Its building—located next to the Haymarket Theatre—is a London landmark, originally designed by legendary architect John Nash (who also developed most of Regency London, including Buckingham Palace and Trafalgar Square), and currently showcases a vibrantly modern, English-style redesign by award-winning interior designer Kit Kemp. Although I did not stay at this hotel, I did dine and tour the property—and it’s absolutely fabulous, very creative and unique. If only for one night: a delectable dinner at Brumus; later, a swim, followed by a nightcap in the magnificent pool area.

WHERE TO EAT First things first: find a local market for basic refreshments. Luckily, I stumble upon a Whole Foods (yes, Whole Foods) near my hotel (another Corinthia advantage), which means in-room access to fresh fruit, cheese and wine for the times when I feel more inclined to relax in the comforts of my suite. Although there are several markets in the vicinity, Whole Foods seems to offer the most abundant variety.
Although it’s easy to frequent the well-known hotels or restaurants for a bite, it’s far more interesting to wander quaint neighborhoods to discover a local hangout. So, one tempestuously rainy afternoon in pursuit of just this, I spot the charming yet bustling ramen restaurant Shoryu. Walking by, I peer through the windows at tiny wooden tables—not a seat available—and dozens of patrons slurping up steamy noodles. Soon, however, Shoryu fulfills my quest for something warm with the most mouthwatering, piping-hot ramen I’ve ever tasted. The ingredient making this place so singular: opened in 2012, the Michelin Guide-recommended resto for 2014 and 2015 specializes in delicious Hakata tonkotsu ramen from a Southern island of Japan, bringing genuine authenticity to ramen in the UK. In honor of my (second) favorite magazine, Monocle, I could not pass up a visit to The Monocle Café on Chiltern Street. Oozing with cool, the tiny café is a place to lounge, read, sip coffee, listen to music and indulge in one of their innovative, wish-you’d-thought-of-it dishes. If I lived in London, I’d find a reason to eat here every day. Specifically for: the Japanese breakfast and the chicken curry.
WHERE TO SHOP Fortnum & Mason is one of the most exquisite stores in London. Founded in Piccadilly in 1707, the emporium epitomizes luxury with its six floors of quintessential shopping, including everything from beautifully packaged gourmet delicacies to the finest fashions for ladies and gents. Especially unique is The Diamond Jubilee Salon, which serves afternoon tea. For urbanstyle perusing, the West End—namely Bond Street—houses a plethora of luxury boutiques. One haute stop: Dover Street Market, whose sartorial collections include the likes of Comme des Garcons.
WHAT TO SEE AND DO You can always visit the local landmarks—Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace and the Houses of Parliament, to name a few—however, be methodical about planning in order to avoid waiting in long lines. There are also a number of entertainment venues in the area, with Royal Albert Hall being one I particularly enjoy. Built to be a kind of “Central Hall” for the arts, not only is the space grand and the staff welcoming, it’s also a prime place for myriad famous performances (and for fairly reasonable ticket prices, too). A day curated just for me: a leisurely stroll over the magnificent Tower Bridge, and lunch at Borough Market—a cornucopia of British and international produce— followed by a walk along the bankside of River Thames to Tate Modern, UK’s exquisite and somewhat emotional collection of modern and contemporary art. MY BEST ADVICE Late one night after the theater, I saunter the streets with hundreds of others hailing cabs. Cold, and in a momentary panic, I wonder how to quickly (and luckily) snag a cab en route to my hotel. However, thanks to Uber, a car is at my location within a few minutes. Download the Uber app to your smartphone (the service saved me in a number of binds during this trip). Without it, I would have been left out in the cold—literally. Had that been the case, however, I would have certainly found my way—after all, you can always go home again.

COME TO CHARLESTON FOR THE RICH HISTORY AND MAGNIFICENT ARCHITECTURE—BUT STAY FOR THE SAVORIEST OF SOUTHERN CUISINE.
I
f Charleston, South Carolina isn’t on your bucket list of cities to visit before you die, it’s time to reconsider your position. Truly one of the nation’s great cities, Charleston is steeped in American history but has a thoroughly modern attitude towards art, culture and cuisine.
Flanked by the Ashley and Cooper rivers, both of which flow into the Atlantic Ocean, this elegant city, founded in 1670, sits on a peninsula in the heart of South Carolina’s Lowcountry, the area encompassing most of the state’s oceanfront and home to renowed resort islands like Hilton Head, Kiawah, Seabrook and Fripp. As the Lowcountry boasts a temperate climate most of the year—the exception is summer, when it can be hot and humid—visiting Charleston is a delight anytime. Known for its gracious homes with manicured gardens and architectural masterpieces, among them numerous churches (thus “The Holy City” nickname), Charleston is adorned with Georgian, Federal, Greek Revival, Italianate and Queen Anne-style buildings, many constructed in the city’s earliest days, and still beautifully maintained. Suffice it to say, establishing a home away from home here is easy, especially with the likes of the convivial 1853 Federal-style Mills House Hotel and the breathtaking Wentworth Mansion, a historic 21-room former residence turned-inn built in 1865, both options. Either way, simply walk out the front door of your hotel and start wandering. Make your way South down stately King Street, lined with quirky stores, art and antique galleries, and high-end shops; then head toward South of Broad Street and the Battery, where the most stunning houses in the most exclusive part of town await. Palatial antebellum mansions lining East Bay, Meeting and Metro Boulevards are everywhere one turns.
Selected mansions are open to the public year-round, but in spring, during the month-long Annual Festival of Houses and Gardens, many more open for both interior and exterior tours. Take a docent-led horsedrawn carriage excursion any time of year, or join Bulldog Tours for a fun and fascinating historical nighttime ghost tour, wending your way on foot through the haunted old jail, dungeons and graveyards.
photo: Market Pavilion Hotel
The Market Pavilion Hotel boasts glorious views of the city from its rooftop bar.
bask beyond
When cocktails call, find your way to the Pavilion Bar, on the rooftop of the Market Pavilion Hotel. Here, sip a Skyline Martini and fully orient yourself with the city, courtesy of the 360-degree view. Look East toward Fort Sumter, the sea-fort in Charleston Harbor where the first shots of the Civil War were fired on April 12, 1861, kickstarting the four-year conflict; then Northeast, over the city’s iconic Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge toward Boone Hall Plantation. A glance Northwest is where Middleton Place, Drayton Hall and Magnolia Plantation and Gardens sit along the Ashley River. Visiting a plantation, ideally a few, is an essential part of the Charleston experience, as it is in these places that history and nature come together in spectacular settings. Just seeing the vast sprawl of massive, ancient live oaks (a presence on every plantation, it seems) is incredible. Equally fascinating—and sobering—is experiencing the history of slavery, the Civil War and Reconstruction in one of its cradles. In Charleston proper, visiting the City Market, in operation since 1804 and the place to purchase certified handmade local products, is a must. It’s where to find female artisans weaving lovely sweetgrass baskets symbolizing the city—all done in intricate designs passed down through the centuries—from the earliest days of West African slavery to the culture that developed from its ancestors, the Lowcountry Gullah. Stroll the length of the market for a favorite, then grab some stone-ground grits or cornmeal hush puppies for a taste of local Southern tradition.
Charleston and its surrounding plantations are a nature lover’s paradise. OPPOSITE The classic beauty of Charleston’s architecture is found on every street throughout the city.
Plan a Charleston adventure wisely, and the city—famed for its world-class chefs—will provide plenty of taste memories too. Take toque Sean Brock, famed chef of both Husk’s and McCrady’s, who leads the pack with his hyper-local Southern fare, going to the extreme of changing the menu at Husk twice a day depending on the existing ingredients. If there’s a version of Crispy Pig’s Ears available—and there usually is—try it and you’ll be a fan for life. Suck down some oysters, pork ribs and catfish, and be sure to gobble up the skillet cornbread with bacon—by the meal’s end, Brock’s standing as a James Beard Award-winning chef will be perfectly clear. Other top eateries in town (be sure to make advance reservations for all) are Michael Lata’s FIG, where localvore practices are also in place, with a strong emphasis on seafood caught right off the coast; Cypress, with chef Craig Deihl at the helm; The MacIntosh, run by chef Jeremiah Bacon; Robert Stehling’s renowned Hominy Grill; and The Grocery, which chef and owner Kevin Johnson oversees. Each has been either a winner of or nominee for a James Beard honor in the recent past, with fare from all these acclaimed kitchens featuring a distinctly Southern, local bent. And, as in the rest of in Charleston, you’ll find the friendliest and most welcoming people imaginable. Charleston is, after all, nothing if not the pinnacle of Southern hospitality.

LIGHT
HOUSE ON THE EDGE OF THE PACIFIC, A NATURAL SETTING OFFERS A PICTURESQUE MODEL FOR PEACEFUL LIVING.
written by AMY ADAMS designer JAMES MAGNI & COLIN DUSENBURY architect FLEETWOOD JOINER listing agents BRIAN & JENNIFER THOMAS
ENTRY “At night, [it’s] like a James Turrell light box,” says designer James Magni of the Corona del Mar home entry, whose highly noted designs span from “Moscow to Mexico City.” Crafted by architect Fleetwood Joiner in collaboration with Magni, together the twosome engineered the perfect Zen residence: a trifecta of water, fire and earth. United, the elements are a tour de force. “We modified it to be a hardscape space with a fountain and greenery,” recounts Magni. “So it would have more purpose... [and] to create a clean box and honor [the] view.” At first step, one enters a sky court and is easily entranced by surround sounds emanating from nearby water pools reflecting simple architecture forms and, overhead, magnificent open skies.
STAIRWAY By naturally illuminating the space with abundant light, and strategically highlighting prominent works of art as well as the lower level of the home, ample-sized skylights create the desired interior aesthetic. Adding to this effect: glass used for stair and balcony rails “to emphasize and contrast the simple, strong massing of the architecture, notes Joiner.
LIVING AREA Passing through the entry into the living area, glass doors that discreetly disappear into the walls and a resplendent ebony-stained oak fireplace anchoring the design neatly frame a picturesque panorama of layered proportions. Furnishings (some from the Magni Home Collection) pieced carefully throughout enhance a kind of obscurity linking indoor and outdoor areas. “You travel through these spaces... [and] it’s sort of a play on ambiguity,”
explains Magni, “…you never know where you are in the house.” For a space of this magnitude, Magni purposefully selected pieces that were easily portable and ideal for entertaining, including the daybed shown here, intended to invite conversation all around. “Everything is open planned, sort of layered, [and] things can [easily] go from 4 people to 12,” adds Magni. “That’s the beauty of contemporary design.”
KITCHEN Overhead skylights in the kitchen and dining area add even more natural light to interior spaces, “making the roof seem lighter and almost disappear, open to the sky, says Joiner. Travertine flooring is carried throughout the house, including the splendid kitchen area, juxtaposed with a durable Italian Basaltina stone countertop and cabinetry composed of wenge wood, setting up the perfect scenario to take in fantastic ocean views.
GUEST ROOM Enveloped in a sea of nature, the home’s untaught aesthetic is further augmented by an elementary and neutral color palette. “You just can’t compete with God... [so] there’s no sense in trying to decorate with color,” says Magni. “It also works beautifully with an art collection, to keep the background simple and let the ocean be the thing.” Here, a guest room remains clean and untouched, and without baseboards, less a unique shadow reveal alternatively used at the base of the wall—a singular architectural abstraction that Joiner used to address indoor and outdoor transitions.
MASTER BATHROOM One of six bathrooms, the private master bath—complete with a steam shower for two—was specially raised 12 inches over the master suite to afford occupants extraordinary garden views while luxuriating in the custom solid-limestone tub.
EXTERIOR The lower level terrace epitomizes the home’s cornerstone combination of natural features, with a blazing fireside at one’s feet, a spa and cold plunge pool nearby for dipping, and the endless relishing of views to the harbor, islands and beyond. Adjacent to the terrace sits an interior recreational space, complete with a rosewood bar, backlit with LED lighting, mixed with a textured stone wall hosting an unexpected display of antiques.
Seaside
Serenity. An island locale, a plethora of innovative technologies, and a tranquil interior environ, this modern dwelling presents a striking spectrum of luxury living appeal.
WRITTEN BY AMY ADAMS ARCHITECT BLAIR BALLARD BUILDER HILTON BUILDERS DESIGN LINDA KLEIN DESIGN AGENTS CAROL BERG & CHERI KETNER
ENTRY Once inside the 11-foothigh glass entry door, one is immediately embraced by up-and-down illumination, courtesy of an electrified candle chandelier from Holly Hunt. Uniquely sized, 7-inch-wide solid oak boards seamlessly span the length of the gaping, cream-hued hallway with various ceiling heights throughout fostering the illusion of singular spaces, further echoing the home’s natural flow of tranquility to the strada. Entry and hallway walls are adorned with climbers made from copper and aluminum tubing, constructed by New York artist Chris Mason.
KITCHEN Homeowners Peter and Linda Formuzis commissioned Hilton Builders in 2003 with a vision in mind. “We wanted a house that was quiet and serene,” says Peter. As such, Hilton masterminds chiseled a double-framed structure allowing for inset windows—from outside to inside—highlighting architectural detail around the frame as well as creating “tremendous sound benefit [due to] added insulation between the walls,” recounts Peter. Benefitting is this intuitive kitchen, one fitted with the finest amenities for optimal cooking and entertaining.
Anchoring its center is an oven hood, modestly posed as an upside-down martini glass, custom created by Hilton. Well-suited for formal and informal dining, versatile limestone and Caesarstone countertops provide abundant space for food preparation or serving platters, while durable custom-built cabinets punctuated with etched glass fronts and dovetail-detailed drawers systematically shelter unwanted clutter. After the party is over, two Miele dishwashers yield a still, yet expeditious, clean up.
“This is really a cook’s kitchen. Everything is here, and these cabinets are bullet proof. ” ~Patricia Hilton
LIVING AREA A 20-foot-high ceiling height looks down on the piano, bestowing the space with a unique semblance as one separate from the living area, which can also accommodate a formal dining table, with a nearby storage closet ideal for a wine cache. Although the house is furnished with cutting-edge technology, a calm aesthetic pervades throughout, in part by the use of inventive touches such as cleverly positioning commissioned artwork aloft the television area, which either conveniently rolls up via remote control,
or otherwise remains obscurely out of sight. In an adjacent space, an outdoor courtyard is squarely positioned between the kitchen and office, affording each area views of a heated spa surrounded by Italian limestone cobble flooring and billowing Kentia Palms from the Howea Islands of the South Pacific. Also outside, an ornamental trellis created from bark timber acts as a focal point between a lemon tree and thriving organic vegetable and herb garden.
BEDROOM
BATHROOM
In the master bedroom, French doors open out to a patio overlooking the courtyard, welcoming ocean-filled breezes and providing a quintessential atmosphere for morning coffee and reading. As day turns to night, a gas fireplace and trough accent lighting extend warmth and comfort on cool evenings.
Strategically sculpted, this simple concept behind the his-and-her master bathroom models that of a lavish spa, with methodical attention paid to every design detail. From slab wainscoting accentuated with a unique curvature etched at the top (fashioned by Hilton), along with the naturally muted tones of the limestone floors and counters lit by the opening skylight overhead, this space provides an intimately luxurious and serene atmosphere of dramatic proportions, complete with a hidden television behind the mirror.

South Coast Plaza celebrated the grand opening of its new BMW Gallery in a class all its own, with a soirée so spectacular, only the stunning vehicles elegantly displayed throughout the sophisticated and modern space could compete—specifically, the all-new BMW i8. While the splendor of the car drew the attention of admiring guests as they mixed, mingled and marveled, original, creative video works featuring renowned artists such as Jeremy Blake, Nam June Paik and Mungo Thomson, provided by the Orange County Museum of Art,
complemented the innovative craftsmanship of the showcased model. After perusing the collections, guests delighted in sumptuous hors d’oeuvres and bubbly during a lavish reception in the gracefully decorated Jewel Court. But it was when singer Macy Gray made a special appearance that the evening hit its high note. Delighting those listening with her deep, soulful vocals, the special and intimate performance saw the songbird—and the event she serenaded—take flight. Now that’s high speed.

truly luminous The classic interiors of Segerstrom Hall were dramatically transformed into a lavish Art Deco ballroom—complete with bold, modern décor and projected architectural designs—for the Center’s much-anticipated Candlelight Concert, which raised nearly $1.9 million to support its arts and education programs. And, in true Art Deco fashion, guests making their way into the Center’s hall, walked a dramatic black carpet, where the Sonora Elementary Handbell Choir greeted the gathering with sounds of the season. Inside, a grand vintage ballroom awaited, dazzling attendees heading to the lower terraces for a sumptuous meal before continuing on to the reception area for fine
bubbly from the Veuve Clicquot Champagne Bar and bespoke desserts from the truffle bar. Musical guests Frank Sinatra Jr. and his 37-piece orchestra, along with Neil Diamond tribute band, Super Diamond, gave sparkling performances that coaxed concert-goers to the dance floor, where they swayed to upbeat rhythms under massive overhanging chandeliers. And, in what was a truly fine finish to the entire affair, the Center gave special honors to Executive Vice President Judith O’Dea Morr when it announced the rechristening of its former Founders Hall, now newly named The Judy Morr Theater. A shining moment, indeed!

Clear skies and a gorgeous ocean view granted guests a passport to all the wonders of a winter day in Southern California as they entered the gorgeously ornamented Island Hotel for the Women of Chapman’s 28th Annual “Christmas at The Ritz” luncheon chaired by Adrienne Brandes. As for decking the halls, the grand ballroom was awash in festive linens and shimmering gold and red beaded overlays, all graciously donated by Youngsong Martin, Wildflower Linen, Linda Young’s Elite OC Productions and Paul Fenner Floral Design, setting a most stunning scene. The signature “Christmas at The Ritz” wreath also made an appearance, providing the celebratory event a truly spectacular centerpiece. Along with an elegant cocktail

reception, complete with champagne cocktails and Moscow Mules made with Tatratea’s signature herbal liqueur, came the crooning of traditional Dickens carolers. A lively opportunity drawing and informal fashion and jewelry presentation by St. John and David Yurman, South Coast Plaza, got applauding guests to their feet before it was time to sit for a splendid four-courser. Favors courtesy of St. John—a lovely black leather cardholder for ladies and cigar holders for gentlemen—were handed to all guests at the close of the afternoon affair. Though the true takeaway— gaining the deeper sense of the spirit of giving that the Women of Chapman dedicate themselves to yearround—was much more. Cheers!

best of friends This winter, more than 520 festively dressed community luminaries appeared at the St. Regis Monarch Beach for benevolence by way of the Friends of CASA Holiday Luncheon. With altruistic intent, the gathering graced the beautifully appointed hotel to support foster youth in Orange County. Following an exquisite meal, a bespoke champagne reception saw circulating and supping followed by a presentation of fine fashions by MaxMara during an intimate fashion show. The conclusion of the luncheon’s lively silent auction then introduced an opportunity drawing sponsored
by Lugano Diamonds, where the renowned jeweler gifted a lucky winner with a gorgeous Pearl Necklace with Diamond Clasp. Shining her own light on the festivities was keynote speaker Debbie Swerdlow, whose retelling of her personal journey with a physically disabled foster youth left not one eye dry. As guests took one last turn around the room, beautiful trees festooned with “starfish ornaments” featuring the holiday wishes of foster youth reminded all present that the children were the season’s true stars.

retro refined Amid crisp winter air, with stars twinkling overhead, a flock of the finely attired strolled a purple carpet en route to the elegantly adorned seven-degrees for Surterre Properties’ annual winter party. Staged by Blackbook Production, the 80’s-themed event was all glitz and glam with plush purple décor by PH Design embellishing the main room, which also featured an expansive bar slinging signature cocktails, sumptuous hors d’oevres and a selection of treats by Infiniti Sweets. The lively tempos of DJ Mark Moreno, meanwhile, provided the perfect background for the swinging soirée, while a spectacular performance by FastTimes The
80’s Flashback Band beckoned beloved classics from the era—and a bevy of guests to the dance floor. The party continued outside, where roaring fire lamps and luminous lights set the scene for guests to nosh on appetizers and sip spirits while admiring sleek rides from suppliers Bentley and Porsche Newport Beach and sampling signature stogies from The Cigar Guys. Evening’s end saw the throng once again grace the purple carpet, chatting merrily, as the sounds of the 80’s lingered, making the event—and the decade that inspired it—like, totally unforgettable.

beauty beholders As the doors of OMG OC Aesthetics’ luxurious new address in Newport Beach opened Feb. 26, a flock of spa enthusiasts turned out for a relaxing day of indulgent pampering and treatments. A true Orange County gem, the renowned Medical Spa celebrated the debut of its latest locale in grand fashion, with an elegant all-day open house. Laughing and conversing throughout the afternoon, attendees relished a finely prepared lunch, exciting raffle drawings and a host of other activities. The splendid soiree also featured some of OMG’s most
bespoke treatments, at generously discounted prices, along with expert demonstrations for those eager to experience the spa’s sumptuous offerings. With festivities continuing into the evening, the gathering noshed on small bites and sipped exquisite wine, all the while mingling and admiring the beautifully appointed venue. radical difference The beauty of philanthropy was on full display at Saks Fifth Avenue, South Coast Plaza, where the first Radical Living Awards unfolded with a private morning reception featuring a champagne toast and by-the-bite brunch, with plenty of preceremony socializing. Proving worth the wait, the event honored three community influencers— marketing executive turned globally-trained chef, Analisa Albert; director of community relations at South Coast Plaza, Kathryn Cenci; and founder and creative director of Jessica Grant Handbags as well as co-owner of Allied Lube, Inc., Suzan Lee Paek—with much-anticipated awards recognizing
their commitment to living a “Radical Life” through their continued service to the local community. Acknowledgement touched honorees, guests and the public alike, though, as all were invited to a lively shopping and inspiration event hosted by Radical Skincare founders, Liz and Rachel Edlich. Chatting and laughing, the group collected around the Radical Skincare counter for a personal skin consultation and facial treatment, while learning more about the brand’s commitment to making a radical difference in others’ lives—a simply flawless example of inspiration at its most beautiful.

Haute off the Press
The Waffle Affair gives Newport Beach a taste of Belgian street food
FANCY A FLING? The Waffle Affair—a clean, elegant cafe off Bayside Drive in Newport Beach—invites just such an idea. Bright and sparsely decorated, the space forces one to focus on the looming epicurean mastery. Order the Liège waffle before trying any other temptation, and the first bite will reveal why the Gaufres de Liège has been one of Belgium’s most popular street foods since the 19th century. Unlike other waffles, it is small (though you feel its weight); dense, not puffy; rich rather than dry; chewy, complete and all-inclusive, rendering syrup and toppings utterly obsolete. Slightly sticky to the touch is the grid’s crusty edges, where the heat of the press melts the pearls of sugar flecked throughout the batter. The butterscotch flavor of the caramelization strikes first, followed by a comfortable butteriness recalling that of a croissant. In fact, one can hear the clinking of ceramic cups and the frothing of espresso, yet still no indulgence—no matter how sweet— can supersede a momentary affair with so savory a morsel.

Kitchen Confidential
An Italian master brings a taste of Old World cuisine to Downtown Brea
Venice-born chef Peter Serantoni is the culinary mastermind at Brunos Italian Kitchen in Brea, a place where classic Italian comfort food collides with some of his family’s favorites. Here, bask asks the talented toque to put it all on the table. You grew up in a cooking clan, but how did you make the leap from your family’s kitchen to the restaurant business? It was not a long disconnect. My father and grandmother cooked from the early morning to late [at] night, and it was never not a full-course, home-cooked meal—it was full-blast every meal, every day, 365 days a year. I never had a question about what I was going to do with my life. I worked with my dad in my teens, then got a formal hotel restaurant education for the next four or five years. When it comes to food trends—like nouveau cuisine, which was popular at the time you received your formal education—do you like to follow or lead?
Brunos Italian Kitchen 210 W. Birch Street Brea, CA 92821 714-257-1000 BrunosBrea.com
It was not that I was focused on [nouveau cuisine], but it was just what was going on at the time. In my older years, I’ve been a little more cautious of jumping on the newest trend or flavor of the month. Some trends survive the test of time because they’re meaningful and make sense. Any trends you can live without? ‘Farm-to-table.’ I don’t want to put anyone down because I like farm-to-table cuisine, but spending tons of time in Italy [you see that the] only way to get the food from the farm to the table is to go to the market. How about the one kitchen ingredient you can’t live without? Olive oil. So, you’re starving, with only 15 minutes to cook. What do you make?
Chef Peter Serantoni
Oh boy. Well, one would be a quick little carbonara with things I always have in the house: pancetta, eggs and Parmesan cheese. Any advice for an aspiring chef? If I was telling my kid what to do in the restaurant business, I’d say, ‘Go straight into it: Get into a restaurant that offers an apprenticeship. You can always get into squeeze bottles and little squiggles, but you need to get the fundamentals.’

Then and now, Selfridges stands as a landmark in the world of luxury retail.
Selfridges Reflecting on London’s retail wonderland—and its wunderkind creator. If you enjoy indulgent shopping at South Coast Plaza, tip your hat to Harry Gordon Selfridge, of Mr. Selfridge fame, who, with the launch of his landmark London emporium on the “dead end” of Oxford Street in 1909, pioneered the modern-day department store. As a retail magnate, Selfridge is, on the surface, improbable. Born in Wisconsin, he survived the loss of his brothers and father (who traipsed off to the Civil War and never returned) to emerge his mother’s sole companion. His rise above these circumstances included a stint at Marshall Field’s in booming Chicago, and a society marriage to Rose Buckingham that produced, among other things, five children and a summerhouse on Lake Geneva. With ambitions as large as his considerable fortune, Selfridge struck out for England, landing in London in 1906 to construct the magnificent neoclassical flagship that bears his name. As orchestrator of its celebrated opening, Selfridge exploited his marketing talents to stupendous effect, coining mantras like “The customer is always right” and instituting offshoot practices to prove it. And whether it was installing finery from the ceiling or putting a bona fide airplane on display, Selfridge introduced a dizzying array of adornments to complement a whirl of retail innovations, including a Bargain Basement, pet department, the world’s largest bookshop at the time, and a brigade of women workers during the Great War. Although the mid-twenties brought much prosperity to Selfridges, the Great Depression swallowed much of its namesake’s fortune, which he further squandered with reckless spending. In 1947, Harry Selfridge died, but his legacy lives on. Saunter inside London’s newly refreshed Selfridges (or any of its regional annexes) today, and creative in-store concepts, exclusive lines, designer duds, and of-the-moment supermodels will assault the senses. All is, as Selfridge famously said, “business as usual.” 162
