EVERY TUESDAY 28.06.16

All change It’s the last week of June and, in my calendar, that means one thing: Wimbledon. And, with it, the promise of British victory – COME ON, Andy! Turn to p40 to read mum Judy Murray’s top tips on being a ‘pushy parent’. If you saw her in Strictly, you’ll know that, despite appearances, she’s warm and funny – and she writes her piece irmly tongue in cheek. We’ll be punching the air with her! Wimbledon’s all about strawberries, Pimm’s in the rain and, with any luck, some long, glorious evenings, too. One man who hopes to be there is beleaguered Clif Richard, who’s emerging from the most damaging two years of his life. His interview with Gloria Hunniford is brutally honest (p10), and demonstrates how their relationship has been a lifesaver. We’ll see you there, Clif. I’m of to get a place in the queue! Why one of Eamonn and Ruth’s toughest interviews has come back to haunt them... Don’t be fooled by Eamonn Holmes’ genial Irish charm. Behind the twinkling eyes and lirty banter with wife and TV co-host Ruth Langsford, lies a top TV journalist practised in grilling everyone from highproile politicians to hardened criminals. So when the This Morning host conducted an interview in 2012 with Ben Butler, a father deemed to have been wrongly convicted of assaulting his daughter in a case of ‘shaken baby syndrome’, he quizzed him about the stigma of being implicated. ‘Are you sad? Are you broken?’ he asked. Shaking his head and appearing to struggle to ind the right words. Butler responded, ‘he nightmare doesn’t end.’ Sitting on the sofa, lanked by the show’s now late agony aunt Denise Robertson, Butler and his partner, Jennie Gray, appeared close to tears. hey went on to describe the ordeal that

Last week, This Morning invited Ellie’s grandfather, Neal Gray, onto the sofa to speak of his despair at watching helplessly as Butler convinced appeal court judge Mrs Justice Hogg to reunite him with his daughter, describing the decision as a ‘happy end’. Phil and Holly were visibly moved during the interview, in which the devastated grandad talked of how he had disowned his daughter. Understandably, there was silence from both Eamonn and Ruth, who are normally extremely active on Twitter. As devoted parents themselves, the TV couple must have been sickened to have come face to face with a monster who brutally brutally claimed the life of a little girl that he should have been proud to protect. Gloria doesn’t say what the conversations were about (although, given Clif’s faith, it may well have been the afterlife), but she believes emphatically that the man she has been close to for almost half a century is ‘a really good man’. So, when she watched the British pop legend being accused of historical sexual ofences, she was horriied – and instantly determined

to help Clif, now aged 75, clear his name. ‘My heart was racing when I heard the news,’ Gloria recalled. ‘I was extremely shocked. Can you imagine what it would be like to watch your own home being raided on TV and a reporter saying you have molested children?’ hat night, Clif, who was in Portugal, told his friend that he had climbed into ‘the biggest, darkest hole’. He then recalled Gloria’s words to him. ‘To quote her, she said, “OK, do not say a word. Do not interrupt me. You will ight this...” I was very grateful for that.’ Gloria introduced him to a lawyer. In the end, despite never reaching court, the

case cost Clif more than £1 million in legal fees. Gloria accepts that South Yorkshire Police needed to check out the accusations, but feels that the 22 months and two days it took before the Crown Prosecution Service threw out the case due to ‘insufficient evidence’ was too long. For those two years, Sir Clif’s reputation was smeared to a point where he admitted, ‘I may have been suicidal if it had continued. hank God for friends [like Gloria]. I was never left alone, ever... I didn’t want to be left alone. ‘And you know what? I have laughed a lot during that time because,

His answer was straightforward. ‘I never talk about my family. I never talk about my sexuality. My sexless marriage sorrow Dawn White-Prince, 49, hasn’t had a physical relationship with husband Philip, 43, for eight years

Sex played a big part in the early days of their relationship

consultant, and Philip worked in data analysis. Before long, 70-hour weeks became the norm. In 2008, the recession hit. Philip was made redundant, and we lost our pensions and savings, too. Stressed and worried about the future, it was hardly surprising that sex took a back seat. And, even though we were still afectionate, we were more concerned about the possibility of losing our house than romance. It took two years for things to calm down, and Philip went back to university to study for a masters degree. As life returned to normal, I assumed our sex life would follow suit. Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be, because, while my sex drive returned, Philip’s didn’t. I tried all my usual tactics, but Philip just wasn’t able to sustain an erection, and had no interest in sex. hankfully, we’ve always been able to talk about anything and everything, so we had long discussions about it. Not that there was a lot to say – he assured me he felt the same way he always

had about me, and that he wanted to have sex with me; he just couldn’t. he irony was that the rest of our marriage was textbook perfect. Philip has always been romantic, buying lowers every week and buying me gifts. Neither of us could work out what was wrong, but it didn’t help that his new job took him away from home a lot – sometimes for a month at a time – doing 16-hour shifts. Every time he came back, I hoped we’d fall into each other’s arms but, in reality, Philip was exhausted, and we needed time to reacquaint ourselves with the other after being apart. As time went on and things didn’t improve, we wanted to rule out any underlying medical problems, and went to see our GP, who refused to take the problem seriously. But by now, it was 2012, and we’d only had sex a handful of times in the previous four years, so we sought a second opinion from another doctor, who seemed a lot more helpful. He did tests to see if Philip’s testosterone hormone levels were within the normal range, and they were – which, in some ways, made things worse. And even though we’re intimate in other ways – we run baths for one another, and have romantic nights in with nice food and a bottle of wine – I can’t deny that I want our sex life back.

‘I love him, and nothing will change that’

ERECTILE DYSFU NCTION Professor Michael Kirby, a trustee from the Sexual Advice Association charity, says, ‘Erectile dysfunction is much more common than you’d think – it is estimated that half of all men between the ages of 40 and 70 will have it to some degree. It can occur for a variety of reasons, including stress. It can also be a sign of diabetes, low testosterone and cardiovascular problems, so if you’re sufering from a lack of sex drive, seek medical advice immediately. To access helpful health tests and questionnaires, download the Sexual Advice Association’s SMART SAA app.’

The couple are as close as ever

It’s an important part of a relationship, and not one we’re willing to give up on. hrough it all, I’ve never considered leaving Philip. I love him, he’s my best friend, and nothing will change that. We’re still looking for an answer, and are currently seeing a urologist to ind out if Philip’s vasectomy could be a factor in our problems. But for now, all we can do is be completely open and honest with each other as we continue a journey that will hopefully lead us back to a fulilling sex life. PHILIP SAYS: ‘I wish this was something I could joke about, but I’m afraid I can’t. In fact, I’m amazed by the doctors I’ve seen who laugh it of. hey’ve thankfully ruled out prostate cancer, a testosterone imbalance and psychological problems, but haven’t ofered me any solutions. It was down to Dawn to ind a urologist, which means we’ll have to pay for private treatment. I love my wife, and I want to get this sorted. he medical industry seems geared up to helping women with the menopause and fertility issues, but when it comes to supporting men with their problems, we’re cut adrift.’ REAL LIFE 19

lot of people assume that it’s women who try to avoid sleeping with their husbands – and, of course, we all like having a laugh at the old ‘not tonight, dear’ cliché. But, if you were in my situation, you wouldn’t be smiling. You see, my husband and I have been struggling to have sex for eight long years. I’ve been sympathetic, and we’re doing the best we can to make our marriage work, but I can’t deny that it’s been tough. Philip, 43, and I met in our 20s, and were friends to begin with, until 2000, when we realised that there was more to our relationship. He was clever, funny and extremely thoughtful and, once we became a couple, life was fantastic. We became intimate and had an amazing sex life. Before long, we realised we were meant to be together, and got married in 2003. After a miscarriage ended an unplanned pregnancy in 2006, we decided we didn’t want children, so Philip had a vasectomy, and we both concentrated on our careers. I was a self-employed

Angelina’s regret Her mother’s untimely death from cancer in 2007 is an ongoing sadness for Hollywood star Angelina Jolie Pitt At times, her regal beauty and star status make her seem like she’s a million miles away from the troubles and fears of your average woman. But last week, Hollywood A-lister Angelina Jolie Pitt, 41, melted the hearts of thousands of radio listeners as she opened up about her beloved mother’s death, and her own preventative cancer surgeries. We were reminded that it doesn’t matter how successful or wealthy you are – cancer can afect anyone. Speaking as part of the Woman’s Hour Takeover week on BBC Radio 4, an emotional Angelina revealed the heartache that hasn’t gone away. Her mum, American actress Marcheline Bertrand, simply didn’t have access to the same information about cancer that her daughter did, and it might have saved her life. ‘When you go through something and you learn about yourself and your body and anything medical, you feel it really wasn’t a decision,’ Angelina said. And she confessed her ongoing pain that Marcheline – who died after an eight-year battle with ovarian cancer – didn’t have more precious time with her loved ones before tragically losing her battle in January 2007, aged 56. ‘It was just that I thought I’d gained information that I wish my mother had known. I wish she’d had the option,’ said the actress, director and United Nations ambassador. ‘I wish she’d had the surgery, in fact, and it might have given her more years with my family.’ Given Angelina’s family history (she has lost eight relatives to cancer), she took the brave decision to have her ovaries and Fallopian tubes removed in 2015. his followed on from the shock

revelation in 2013 that the star had had a double mastectomy, after discovering she carried a faulty version of the BRCA1 gene, and had an 87 per cent chance of developing breast cancer. Angelina’s preventative surgeries provoked global debate. In Britain, her decision led to a rise in genetic testing for breast cancer. ‘I don’t encourage every woman to make the decision I made, but I think it is really important that we all share anything we learn,’ Angelina said. She added, ‘I have gained so much in my life through my mother and through my daughters and through friendships with other women.’ he thought of a woman getting herself checked out because of her, and inding they’d ‘caught something in time’ made her feel ‘emotional’. Hopefully, Angelina can take comfort from being among the most high-proile celebs to raise awareness of this terrible disease. Marcheline, herself an anticancer campaigner, would be brimming with pride.

One-man tornado and original ‘Brat Pack’ member Charlie Sheen – son of Martin – was a major heart-throb of the 80s, hitting the big-time with roles in ilms like Red Dawn (1984), Platoon (1986) and Wall Street (1987). In the noughties, Charlie moved to TV, starring in Spin City (bagging himself several Golden Globe nominations), comedy series Two And A Half Men and Anger Management, and became one of the highestpaid actors in US TV. So it was sad to witness his unravelling in 2011, when he clashed with the makers of Two And A Half Men, eventually being ired in the midst of rumours of substance abuse. (Sheen later denied that drugs were the cause of his meltdown.) But it was even more shocking to learn, last November, that he was HIV-positive. When Best caught up with the actor last week, he was wise-cracking about his lack of pulling power one minute, and serious about the virus he now lives with the next. Charlie is a contradiction in terms, but never less than entertaining, and extremely passionate – about his work, his ive children, and his latest (unplanned) role – as a poster boy for HIV…

Reformulation of food to reduce fat and sugar. 2. Clear labelling on the front of packets, to allow us to make informed choices. 3. Imposing a sugar tax on sugary drinks. THREE WAYS YOU CAN TAKE ACTION: 1. PLAN. Shop with a list, and buy meals for the whole week. 2. DRINK. Start each meal with a glass of water, as thirst can often be confused with hunger. 3. CONCENTRATE. All meals should be eaten mindfully at a table, so you can fully enjoy the food you’ve prepared without distractions.

I know exactly what I’m supposed to do to lose weight – eat less and exercise more. But the reality isn’t that simple. I’m short (5ft 1in), with a curvy bottom and big bosoms, and I weigh 14st. I’ve tried every diet going, from the F-plan to Slimming World. I keep as active as I can with my gardening business, and by taking my dog out. I don’t keep biscuits, cake or crisps in the house. But I confess I don’t always eat breakfast, love a roast, and often indulge in homegrown potatoes with butter. I can’t blame my weight problems on my parents, who always ate sensibly. I eat more than they did, and booze is another factor. Since the 60s, we’ve seen a decline in physical activity, with most people working long hours at a desk. Children, too, spend more time in front of a screen and less time running around. The Government recommends 150 minutes of physical activity a week, muscle-strengthening exercises twice a week, and breaking up extended periods of sitting time as regularly as possible. TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR THOUGHTS Cognitive behavioural therapist Anna Albright says:

IS SURGERY IS THE ANSWER? Mr Omar Khan, a bariatric surgeon, says:

WORDS: REBECCA WRIGHT PICTURES: GETTY

For the severely obese, it is not usually enough to try to watch their diet, and exercise more. People in this category have altered their ‘internal weight thermostat’, so the body increases the levels of ‘hunger hormones’, causing them to eat more. It is possible to counteract this through willpower alone, but that’s too hard for most people. The only answer for these extreme cases is weight-loss surgery. It was once thought that surgery (namely the gastric band, sleeve and bypass) simply reduced the patient’s capacity to eat but, in fact, these operations work more subtly, altering the hunger-hormone levels and reducing a patient’s cravings for food. More importantly, these hormonal changes have profound efects on the development of other diseases – for example, weight-loss surgery can cure Type 2 diabetes in a matter of 48 hours. So if these operations are the answer, why is less than one per cent of the obese population being ofered these life-changing treatments?

HOW

OBESE IS OBESE?

26 REPORT

Losing weight is about changing our mindset. The fact is that, for most of us, food isn't simply about fuel for our bodies. We also celebrate and commiserate with food, and too many of us – particularly women – regularly comfort-eat, too. It's no surprise we eat more than we need to when big corporations work tirelessly to sell us their products and the lifestyle that goes with them. They understand consumer behaviour, and can therefore easily seduce us into buying that particular brand of ice-cream or cake or juicy burger! To burst the obesity bubble, we need to change our behaviour and attitudes. Remember that diets don’t work, so forget fast ixes. Think about how you want to look and feel in ive or 10 years’ time, and focus on what you could do today to make sure that happens. Setting yourself realistic and achievable goals will help you succeed. For example, give up izzy drinks during week one, increase your intake of green vegetables in week two, and so on.

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a measure of whether you're a healthy weight for your height. For most adults, an ideal BMI is in the 18.5-24.9 range. ● 25-29.9 is overweight ● 30-39.9 is obese ● 40 or more is very obese.

NB these ranges are for adults only. Concerned about your child's weight? Seek advice from your school nurse or GP. THE COST OF OBESITY More is spent on conditions related to obesity than on the police or ire service, according to NHS England.

Julie found success with Slimming World

When it comes to losing weight, there’s no such thing as an easy ix, and I’m living proof of that. Growing up, I always had a problem with my weight, and loved chips, bread and cans of izzy drink, on top of my three square meals a day. After I’d had my two children, I put on more weight and, by the time I was 37, I’d got up to 14st 7lb – huge on my 5ft 2in frame. When I got really fed up, I decided to try to lose weight. Ditching all my unhealthy habits, I ate more fruit and veg, and lost 4st in a year. Sadly, it didn’t last and, within another year, I’d put it all back on again. When my daughter, Amy, 26, joined our local Slimming World in Barnsley, South Yorkshire in September 2010, I decided to go with her. I lost 5lb in the irst week, and after that, the weight gradually dropped of. Having to go to weigh-ins and meetings kept me motivated, and I lost almost 6st in two years, getting to my target in September 2012. I’m so proud that I’ve managed SLEEP to keep that weight of for nearly OFF THE four years now. Straight Talk... With Loose Woman Coleen Nolan

nidelity is diferent for men and women, because sex is fundamentally diferent for men and women. Last week, a US report on inidelity revealed that wives feel betrayed if their husband has a close friendship with another woman, while men are only hurt if their wife or girlfriend actually goes on to sleep with another man. I get that, I do. Because for women, it’s about sharing intimate moments. If I was unfaithful, it would be because I totally fancied the pants of somebody AND thought he was worth splitting my marriage up over – though I’m not condoning it. But a man could go out, get drunk and think, ‘It’s only sex.’ After I found out about my ex-husband Shane [Richie]’s afair, I never once thought of him and that woman having sex. What absolutely stabbed me through the heart were thoughts of them cuddling on the sofa while they watched a movie, him stroking her hair, or them laughing together. hat’s emotional betrayal and it’s what hurts the most – not what goes on between the sheets. When I met Ray and we had Ciara, now 14, he was a stay-at-home dad. hen, eight years ago, he went back on the road (he’s a musician) – with two young, pretty, female backing singers. All of a sudden, he was coming home and talking about how funny and brilliant they were. I didn’t mind him

mentioning the drummer or the keyboard player, but when these girls came up in conversation, I felt insecure. I went through a really paranoid stage, but I tried to pretend I was OK – I didn’t want to be the needy wife. Poor Ray probably dreaded come home! One night, I met the girls, and we got along amazingly – we’re still friends. Had I not, I’d have been forever worried. Friendships should involve both partners. I had to go and be in that environment to see what was going on – which turned out to be absolutely nothing! Ray going of on tour was the moment I realised how badly Shane’s afair (which he’d had on tour) had afected me. Instantly, my mind was screaming, ‘his has happened before!’ In hindsight, I was tarring Ray with the same brush, and you shouldn’t do that. It took a while, but I’ve now stopped basing everything that happens on what Shane did. I have close friendships with men, but 99 per cent of them are gay, so Ray’s not threatened by them. If I told him I was going for lunch with a straight male friend, he’d say, ‘Col, what’s going on?’ hat’s not to say men and women can never be friends. But, if you fancy someone at work and think, ‘What if..?’ then no, that’s not simple friendship and you don’t take it out of the office – unless it’s in a group, or you invite your partner. Sometimes, it’s better not to go there. OPINION 29

Meatballs You can make meatballs with any mince you fancy – these are lamb and mint, but you can use beef, pork or even chicken and turkey mince, with whichever herbs you have to hand. Make the meatballs spicy with some chilli and garlic, or perhaps fruity with some dried cranberries. SERVES 4 400g lean lamb mince 1 egg, beaten 2 small onions, roughly chopped 85g breadcrumbs 1tbsp mint, inely chopped, plus extra to serve ● Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste ● 4tsp olive oil ● 1tsp tomato purée ● ½tsp dried chilli flakes ● ½tsp smoked sweet paprika ● 400g tin chopped tomatoes ● 300g spaghetti ● Finely grated Parmesan cheese, to serve (optional) ● ● ● ● ●

1. Put the lamb mince, egg, one of the onions, the breadcrumbs and mint into a bowl and mix well. Season with salt and black pepper, then stir once more and divide in half. 2. Divide each half in half again, then into ive pieces – you will have 20 pieces of mince. This way you will make similar-sized balls. Roll the mixture into spheres and set aside. 3. Heat a frying pan until medium hot, add 2tsp of the olive oil and the remaining chopped onion. Cook for 4-5 mins until just softened. 4. Meanwhile, heat another frying pan until hot, add the remaining oil and brown the meatballs on each side until golden all over. 5. Add the tomato purée, chilli lakes and smoked paprika to the pan with the onions, and fry for a minute. Then add the chopped tomatoes. Half-ill the empty tin with cold water and add to the pan. Bring to a simmer, then add the browned meatballs. Cook over a gentle heat for 15 mins until the meatballs are cooked and the sauce has reduced. Season with salt and black pepper. 6. While the sauce cooks, bring a saucepan of salted water to the boil. Add the spaghetti and cook until al dente. Drain the pasta, reserving about 3-4tbsp of the water. Then add the pasta and reserved water to the sauce. Stir well to coat then cook for another couple of minutes. 7. Serve with Parmesan on top.

Meat-free chilli Everyone likes their chilli at a diferent heat – add more chillies to start if everyone likes it hot, but if not, add chilli sauce to an individual portion at the end. There are a huge variety available now in the supermarkets. SERVES 4 1tbsp rapeseed oil 1 large onion, inely chopped ● 2 garlic cloves, inely chopped ● 1 red chilli, inely chopped ● ½tsp ground cumin ● 1tbsp paprika ● 1tsp chilli powder ● 250g soya mince ● 400g tin chopped tomatoes ● 3tbsp tomato purée ● 300ml vegetable stock ● 1 green pepper, deseeded and cut into large cubes ● 1 yellow pepper, deseeded and cut into large cubes ● 1 carrot, peeled and grated ● 400g tin kidney beans in water, drained ● 1tsp cornflour ● Handful of coriander, inely chopped ● Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste ● ●

TO SERVE 2 wholemeal pitta breads, halved ● 4tbsp sour cream ● 50g Cheddar, grated ●

1. Heat a large frying pan until medium hot, then add the oil, onion and garlic. Cook for 4-5 mins, or until just soft. 2. Stir in the red chilli, ground cumin, paprika and chilli powder, and cook for a minute. Add the soya mince and cook for another 2-3 mins. 3. Add the chopped tomatoes, tomato purée, stock, peppers and carrot then bring to the boil. Reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer for 10 mins, stirring occasionally. 4. Add the kidney beans and cook for 5 mins. Mix the cornlour with 1tbsp water in a small bowl, then add it to the pan, and cook for a further 5 mins until the sauce has thickened. 5. Stir in the coriander and season to taste with the sea salt and black pepper. 6. Serve the chilli with the pitta halves, sour cream and grated Cheddar cheese. FOOD 35

COOKERY

Spiced chicken with roasted vegetable rice Cooking the chicken in its own parcel means that it stays very succulent. It’s perfect with roasted vegetables. You can also keep any leftover veg to throw into an omelette or toss through pasta – they’re a great stand-by.

SERVES 5 4tbsp olive oil 2tsp smoked paprika 2tsp dried basil 1tsp cayenne pepper 5 boneless, skinless chicken breasts ● 5 whole garlic cloves, peeled ● 2 red peppers, deseeded and roughly chopped ● 1 courgette, roughly chopped ● 2 onions, roughly chopped ● Sea salt and freshly ground ● ● ● ● ●

● ●

black pepper, to taste 375g long-grain rice ½ x 280g jar sundried tomatoes, drained and roughly chopped

1. Preheat the oven to 200°C/ gas 6. Cut ive pieces of foil each big enough to wrap a chicken breast 1½ times over. 2. Put 2tbsp of the olive oil into a bowl, add the smoked paprika, dried basil and cayenne pepper and mix well. 3. Place a chicken breast onto the centre of each piece of foil. Divide the spiced oil among the portions and turn the chicken in the oil to coat completely. Add a garlic clove to each one, then fold the

foil up around the meat to make a parcel, sealing it well. 4. Put the parcels onto a baking tray and place in the oven for 20 mins until cooked. 5. Pile the chopped peppers, courgette and onions into a roasting tin, add the remaining oil and season with salt and black pepper. Toss, then roast in the oven with the chicken. 6. Bring a large saucepan of water to the boil. Rinse the rice in cold water and drain well. Tip the drained rice into the boiling water, stir well then simmer for 15-18 mins until cooked. After 15 mins, lift a spoonful of rice out of the pan, drain of the water and taste it. If there is a tiny white mark in the centre of the grain, it needs to cook for another couple of minutes. 7. Drain the rice into a colander and leave to steam while you get the chicken and vegetables out of the oven. Open the foil parcels carefully. Check the chicken is cooked by piercing the centre of the chicken with a sharp knife. Don’t cut it in half, just slide the knife in, then out again. Any juices coming out should be clear, and the tip of the knife should be very hot. If not, return to the oven for another 5 mins and check again. 8. Tip the cooked rice onto the tray of roasted vegetables and toss together. Add the sundried tomatoes and mix thoroughly, then season to taste. 9. Serve the chicken on a bed of the roasted vegetable rice with a salad garnish. Extract from Eat Well For Less by Jo ScarrattJones, published by BBC Books at £14.99 on 30 June. ‘Lighten up! Let Andy and Jamie trained from them a young age enjoy themselves’

‘Never show fear – no matter what’

Sometimes parents take things too seriously. If they want their children to enjoy themselves, they have to lighten up too. When Jamie and Andy were little, we got them to try every sport, from pre-school gymnastics to ice-skating. I even invented games at home. All it takes is a little bit of creativity and imagination. Jamie and Andy used to knock balloons over the sofa in our living room, using their hands or cardboard cut-out bats when they were toddlers. Our irst ‘tennis court’ was our driveway at home, with two chairs with a piece of rope for the net. Always start with simple and achievable goals. Build conidence through success, then make the task tougher.

The Dunblane school shooting in 1996 (when gunman Thomas Hamilton shot dead 16 children and one teacher at the Murray boys’ Scottish primary school) was the toughest thing I’ve ever endured. For four hours, I stood outside the school gates with other parents, not knowing if I’d see my boys again. Jamie was 10 and Andy was eight. They were too young to understand the enormity of it. As frightened and numb as I was, I understood this was when I had to step up and make life as normal as I could for them – to not show my fear. They’d lost friends but I wanted to show them life goes on, as hard and as challenging as it can be.

6

‘It’s OK to be superstitious’ Logic can sometimes ly out the window. A few years ago, I became superstitious after eating a lemon-iced doughnut the irst day Andy was playing and won, so I then got it in my mind I had to have one before each match. hen he won Wimbledon, so I didn’t dare break the chain!

‘Ensure they have good manners’

I’ve always been a hard worker and it’s good that my kids have witnessed that. It’s shown them the world doesn’t owe you a living. All I’ve ever asked of them is to try their best, even if that means failing. I’m also so proud of them as people because they’re good, thoughtful men who present themselves with decorum.

‘Push them out of their comfort zone’

Andy risked becoming a big ish in a small pond if I hadn’t sent him to Spain at 15. If I’d listened to all the naysayers who told me I was mad sending him there, that a Scottish player would never make it big, he would have never reached his potential. I like challenges, I see them as obstacles to overcome, not to worry about. And I’ve taught my children to think the same.

All you need to do is apply two key rules – irstly is the classic: less is more. Use little amounts of products, buf them in, then only add more if you need them. Next up, to give some colour to your cheeks, try a water-based pop of peach. Go for a second spritz of setting spray – topping and tailing like this keeps your look on lockdown. Merlin star Colin Morgan, 30, reveals all about his role in a spooky new BBC drama….

When his mother’s death brings psychologist Nathan Appleby (Colin Morgan) and young wife Charlotte (Les Misérables’ Charlotte Spencer) back to the family farm in Somerset, they are faced with ruin unless they can turn its fortunes around. But then a teenage girl comes to the house, seemingly possessed by a terrifying spirit, and Nathan must help her. Faced with one disturbing case after the other, he begins to fear there is something sinister about the house…

Is Nathan torn between the scientiic and the supernatural? Yes. He’s been taught to believe that the supernatural is caused by the mind, so to see his belief challenged is unsettling. He gets obsessed with the possibility that he’s wrong, which digs up his own demons – such as his dead son, Gabriel.

Describe the relationship between Nathan and his wife, Charlotte. It’s the centre of the drama; the heart and soul. They’re desperately in love, but they can’t comprehend what’s waiting for them in Somerset. So this is essentially a story about a couple whose relationship is put to the test.

It’s set in the late 19th century… Yes, a time of great change. Traditions were being smothered – very unsettling for country people. You get the feeling that the land holds pain, trauma and memories. Digging it up gives a sense of something else being unearthed.

Hi, Colin. What can we expect from The Living And The Dead? It’s a very dark series – a blend of horror, the supernatural, love, life, death and loss. Tell us more about Nathan… He’s adamant that he’s going to solve all life’s problems, be that as a psychologist or by moving to the house he grew up in. It’s where his son died, his mother died and his wife almost died, so that’s hard.

BE A GLASS-HALFFULL PERSON Love wine as a treat? Avoid drinking it out of large glasses. New research from the US reveals that drinkers opting to have their favourite wine served in a large glass drank up to nine per cent more each time. Drinking a large glass, or 250ml, of red wine with your meal adds 228 calories to your intake – the equivalent of an ice-cream dessert.

TAKE YOUR MORNING CUPPA INTO THE GARDEN… … to drink it while soaking up some sunlight. Early sun contains more of the blue UV light that helps regulate your body clock and stimulates metabolism, so you’ll burn calories faster throughout the day – up to 15 per cent more. It takes around 20-30 minutes a day to have a slimming benefit.

Struggling to shift those last few pounds in time for your beach break, or just drifted off diet track? Our allnew slimming tips and tricks could help you lose up to 4lb in a week…

0 2 WAYS TO

S S E R D A G N I T N U O C T U O H WIT

SERVE UP YOUR MEAL ON A RED PLATE Research by German scientists at the University of Mannheim found that eating off a red plate could cut down your calorie consumption by up to 40 per cent. Trials on would-be slimmers found they tended to eat smaller helpings of sweet treats like popcorn and chocolate off red crockery. It seems we link red with danger or ‘stop’ signals, so we’re less likely to over-eat off this colour. 50 DIET

DON’T GOBBLE ON THE GO Eating food straight from the pack can ruin your sense of portion control. Latest research by scientists in the UK found that weight-watchers who made the effort to serve their meals on a plate – even their lunchtime sandwich – lost an average of 4lb more a month.

TRY EATING YOUR MEAL WEARING YOUR SUNGLASSES! German scientists have discovered that eating in sunnies led to up to 25 per cent less food consumption each time. It might take some getting used to, but it makes sense when you’re eating outside in the summer months.

DROP E Z I S G A CA LORIE!

DIET

GET AN EARLY NIGHT Sleeping produces leptin – a chemical that suppresses the production of fat cells by curbing appetite and helps you feel fuller for longer. Just one hour extra sleep per night could help you lose 1lb a week!

MAX OUT ON MAGNESIUM This vital mineral regulates the amount of glucose going into the cells needed for energy. If you don’t have enough, the glucose gets stored as fat! Find it in nuts, dark green, leafy veg, fish and bananas. Or try a supplement like Solgar Magnesium with vitamin B6, £5.94 for 100 tablets at amazon.co.uk.

EAT MORE FISH START THE DAY WITH A GREEN JUICE Replacing breakfast with a juice made from a handful of raw green veggies, like kale, spinach, broccoli, celery and a green apple for sweetness, has helped celebs like Ruth Langsford drop up to 4lb in a week. Try celebrity juicer Jason Vale’s Salad Juice by combining a handful of rocket, ¼ cucumber, 2 carrots and ¼ avocado in a juicer. Serve over ice.

Top trainer James Duigan, who helps keep stunning model Rosie HuntingtonWhiteley in shape, says, ‘Eating certain “good” fats makes your body produce a fat-burning enzyme called PPAR-alpha.’ Eat at least three portions of omega-3 rich salmon, mackerel and tuna every week, served with veggies and salad.

DIET 51

IT’S NOT MAD TO BE A BIT MOONSTRUCK Researchers at America’s Georgia State University have found that we tend to eat eight per cent more at the time of a full moon! Kick-starting your diet at the time of the new moon, when the body naturally needs less food, improves your chances of staying on track. Worth a try!

GO ANTI-ACID ‘It’s harder to lose weight when your body is in an acid state,’ says nutritionist Carys Kikis. ‘Acids are formed when we are stressed and our diet is poor. By alkalining your body, you help put it back in balance and promote natural weight loss.’ Try KiKi Health pH Balancer Alkaline Infusion Powder, £24.99 at kiki-health.com.

SWITCH HANDS WHEN USING CUTLERY… It helps to slow down the time you take to eat, helping digestion, and can help you to eat less, too. The same goes with eating with chopsticks, says Japanese food expert Kimiko Barber, author of The Chopsticks Diet, £3.99, amazon.co.uk. She believes eating with chopsticks gives the brain a chance to process what’s happening and let your stomach know when it’s full before you have the chance to overeat.

WORDS: ABBY KNIGHT PICTURES: BIGSTOCK, GETTY

TUNE IN TO YOUR HORMONES

TURN DOWN THE HEAT! Nutritionist Peta Bee, author of The Ice Diet, £5.99, amazon.co.uk, says, ‘By eating and sleeping in cooler temperatures – no more than 19˚C – you can set up a thermogenic effect that makes you burn calories faster!’ Double the benefits by plunging your feet in a bowl of cold water for 10 minutes a day. 52 DIET

During the second half of your menstrual cycle, progesterone is produced to prepare your body for possible pregnancy. This stimulates other hormones to encourage you to eat – research suggests that up to 75 per cent of women crave food during their period. Keep healthy snacks like almonds, avocados and grapes handy to avoid tucking into calorie-loaded biscuits and sweets.

DIET BREAKFAST LIKE A KING

AVOID THE FOOD FREEBIES It may be tempting to pick up a cheese, cake or biscuit sample, but a study by the Journal of Consumer Research shows that we often eat more when we’re confronted by a variety of foods – especially when we’re not expecting it. This can lead to a whopping weight gain of 20lb a year. Avoid any situations where you might be tempted, and never go shopping on an empty stomach.

Tucking into a protein-based breakfast, like yoghurt mixed with a teaspoon of oats, scrambled eggs and lean bacon, could help you lose weight faster. Reason being, the protein stimulates the production of a hormone called ghrelin that tells your brain you feel full. Swap your usual cereal for seven days and you could make a saving of over 2,000 calories.

YOU’RE SWEET ENOUGH…

WATCH YOUR ‘FAT TOOTH’ Scientists reporting in the American Dietetic Association last month have found that, just like you can have cravings for sweet and salty foods, some of us have super-sensitive fat receptors on our tongues which make us want to eat more fat-based foods like ice-cream and cheese. Keep your ‘fat tooth’ at bay by eating more lean protein and fibre-based foods at meal times, like chicken, white fish and whole grains.

THINK ABOUT STARTING A DIET ON A THURSDAY ‘The problem with starting on a Monday is that, by the time the weekend rolls around, your willpower is flagging – just when you need it most,’ reckons The Food Doctor Ian Marber (thefooddoctor.com). ‘Eventually, you get into a cycle of starting a new diet every Monday but never actually losing any weight.’ Committing to a new diet plan on a Thursday means you’ll keep motivation levels high and be less likely to say yes to tempting snacks or weekend drinks. And by Monday you’ll be feeling the benefits.

Cut out the two teaspoons of sugar you add to your daily cup of tea and coffee for just 24 hours and you could lose 2lb in just a week by making a calorie saving of 800. Need the sweet fix? Switch to fruit teas like Twinings Fruits Selection, £2.69 for 20 bags, from good supermarkets.

PHONE A FRIEND Distraction doesn’t help when you’re eating but, if you are having a craving, it’s proven that doing something to take your mind of it – like calling a friend – can be just what you need to prevent a calorie load-up. A typical food craving lasts for no more than five minutes, just long enough for a catch-up!
