The most seriously injured was White House Press Secretary James Brady, who was shot in the head and left paralyzed. For the rest of their lives, Brady and his wife, Sarah, fought to keep guns out of the hands of the dangerous and unstable. Today the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence continues that mission. On Nov. 15, at the Brady Center Bear Awards, Katie Couric (whose eye-opening documentary Under the Gun came out this year) and the law firm of Paul, Weiss were honored. I also accepted an honor for People’s Call to Action, urging readers to reach out to their representatives in Washington to find out what they’re doing about the gun-violence epidemic (contact information for all 535 voting members of Congress can be found at people.com/call-congress). In our ongoing series Finding Solutions to Gun Violence, we also profile dedicated citizens working tirelessly to make their own communities safer. I’m so proud of these initiatives and grateful to the People team and the Brady Center. We will continue to celebrate community heroes, and when the new Congress takes its place in January, we will make sure you know how to make your voice heard. Speaking of making the world a better place: This week we’re launching a new feature called People at Their Best, which celebrates ordinary people doing extraordinary acts of kindness. On page 76 you’ll see the story of Natasha Nkhama, a Baylor University student who was shoved and called a racist slur on campus on Nov. 9. A Husband’s Loving Legacy Bob Wright, 73, is used to fighting battles with his wife, Suzanne, by his side. Together they founded Autism Speaks after their grandson was diagnosed with the disorder (People, July 13, 2015). But Wright’s latest initiative is for his wife of 49 years, who died in July from pancreatic cancer. On Nov. 16 Wright launched the Suzanne Wright Foundation (CodePurpleNow.org) to raise funds and A CAUSE FOR LOVE awareness about the disease. Until her diagnosis he had Bob and Suzanne no idea how few treatments were available. “While she Wright. Inset: was dying, she said, ‘I want you to get on with your life,’” Bob’s favorite photo says the former CEO of NBCUniversal. “But just before of Suzanne with she died, I told her, ‘There are things that have to get Happy, the puppy done here.’ You know what she said? ‘Thank you.’” he got her after her diagnosis.

It’s shaping up to be a somber Thanksgiving for Brooke Mueller. On Nov. 16, reports claimed that Charlie Sheen’s ex-wife, 39, had gone missing in Utah with their twin sons Bob and Max following a bizarre altercation that took place in their presence in a bar—leading many to fear for the 7-year-olds’ safety. Now Mueller is hospitalized and receiving psychiatric treatment after her mother, Moira Wolofsky Fiore, says Mueller stopped taking her meds. (The boys “are fine” and in her care, Fiore says.) It’s yet another sad chapter in Mueller’s painful history—and one that leads to renewed concerns for the kids, of whom Mueller has retained physical custody despite a 2011 arrest for alleged cocaine possession and numerous stints in rehab for her crippling addiction. My Christmas Traditions The new TV movie Christmas of Many Colors is based on your real life. What kind of presents did you get as a kid? We had a country Christmas with a lot of homemade gifts. Mama would make us rag dolls. We’d cut down the tree ourselves and made our own decorations. What’s the holiday like for you now? We just do it in finer fashion. I love having my little nieces and nephews over for cookie night and presents. You’ve produced this TV movie. What’s next? I’m developing a few series. I’d love to work with [my goddaughter] Miley Cyrus on one of them. And Reba McEntire. I think she’s great. Or Reese Witherspoon. We’ve been friends for years. I’m sure that will all come to be at the right time.

Do people recognize you with short hair? Less people recognize me with the short hair. Hence I love the short hair. I like the 30 minutes a day I save on looking for hair ties, but my wife misses my ponytail. You’ve had a meteoric rise to fame. Are there moments when you’re still wrapping your mind around it all? The cartoon where Wile E. Coyote straps himself to a rocket to chase the Road Runner. That’s been my life lately, but there’s plenty to keep me humble. My son doesn’t care what time I go to bed, he wakes up at 6. What’s the biggest life change postHamilton? The fun is having my nights back, H getting to tuck my kid in, which I didn’t get to do the first year of his life because I had a night job. Now my days consist of singing aand dancing with Emily Blunt [in Disney’s upcoming Mary Poppins film] and then I tuck u my kid in at night, and that’s pretty rad. m You cowrote the music for Disney’s new Y animated film Moana. How did you get a nto the mind-set to write those songs? in My two biggest tools are research and M empathy. You learn everything you can about what you’re writing about, then you get to be Moana. What’s your favorite thing to do when you’re not working? Take my kid to the park. I enjoy watching him pick up stuff. We’re in a really fun language place right now. He’s fully bilingual. It’s adorable to see him sense who he’s talking to and translate. He’ll be like, “Leche? “Holy s--t, I have to act out these things we just wrote over the last six months!” In what ways do you think you relate to your character, Issa Dee? She basically is me. I’m more empathetic and I’ve made different decisions than she has, but the essence of her personality is definitely me. If you weren’t doing this, what career would you have chosen? I always knew this was what I wanted to do at a young age. “It’s really a mix of characters that are endemic to American society,” Macy’s executive parade producer Amy Kule says of how they decide which balloons will fly each year. “We have long conversations about what will make sense.” Though the parade has been running since 1924 (it took a hiatus for a few years during WW II), the balloons didn’t actually make their first appearance until 1927, when Felix the Cat was the first character. So in all these years, have any ever broken free? “They’re very well-secured,” Kule says, though she notes that up until 1931 the balloons were allowed to float away at the end of the parade, and whoever found them deflated in their backyard could bring in the tag for a special gift from Macy’s. She adds, “In 2026, for the 100th parade, I hope to let them go up in the air again!”

A girl braves the ocean—and stands up to Dwayne Johnson—in a Disney dazzler ANIMATED Moana (pronounced mo-WAH-nah) lives on a Pacific island where the carefully tended ecosystem produces the best farm-to-table food imaginable—and where, someday, she’ll inherit the power to rule from her father, the chief. In short, it’s paradise. Until it’s not: The coconuts begin to rot and the fish swim off beyond the reef and into the dangerous ocean that the chief forbids his people from sailing. Moana’s grandmother, the human equivalent of that mystical old tree in Pocahontas, knows the cause of this curse: It all goes back to Maui (Johnson), demigod of wind and sea, and his betrayal of Te Fiti, full-fledged nature goddess. Moana (Cravalho), propelled by a sense of destiny, sets sail to find Maui and right the world: A girl conquering the vast blue ocean all on her own isn’t going to worry about glass ceilings. The movie is a lovely adventure, and it comes with a highly hummable score by a team that includes Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton). “How Far I’ll Go,” Moana’s big song, should finally allow you to let go of Frozen’s “Let It Go.” (Nov. 23, PG)

Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard make love in war, then war in love DRAMA Merci, Madame Cotillard, for being Pitt’s first onscreen leading lady since his split from the one with the soaring cheekbones. You’re superb in director Robert Zemeckis’s intriguing, not completely successful spies-and-sex epic. It starts as a sort of homage to Casablanca, with you and Pitt as Allied operatives in 1940s Morocco. (In the film’s best scene, you make love inside a car during a sandstorm: It’s likeLawrence of Arabia as a date movie.) Then things segue into a morose, Graham Greene-like story in which Pitt, now your husband, suspects you of being a German agent. Pitt mostly looks stricken, as if he’d eaten substandard tinned meat, which puts the kibosh on sexual chemistry. But you, with your large eyes and delicate nervousness, project genuine mystery. The film would be better as I Spy. (Nov. 23, R)

DRAMA Miles Teller (Whiplash) stars as boxer Vinny “Paz” Pazienza, who fought his way back into the ring after breaking his neck in a car accident in 1991. Bleed doesn’t oversell the inspirational climax, Pazienza’s 12 rounds against Roberto Durán. MAKE IT HEAT oven to 325ÂşF. COMBINE cookie crumbs and butter; press onto bottoms of 24 paper-lined mini muffin cups, adding about 1 tsp. crumb mixture to each cup. BEAT cream cheese, sugar and 1 Tbsp. bourbon in large bowl with mixer until blended. Use sharp knife to gently split vanilla bean pod lengthwise in half. ourteen-year-old Sheila Sharp had spent the night at a friend’s house just next door to her family’s cabin in the idyllic Keddie Resort in Northern California. She’d been up late, talking about boys and school, laughing and giggling with her friend and fellow eighth-grader Alicia Seabolt. But when Sheila awoke on the morning of Sun., April 12, 1981, planning to go to church with the Seabolt family, she realized she’d forgotten her curling iron, so she raced home to Cabin 28 to get it. As she turned the doorknob and stepped into her family’s living room, Sheila’s screams pierced the morning stillness. Inside was a scene of unspeakable horror: The bodies of her mother, Sue, 36, her brother, Johnny, 15, and his best friend Dana Wingate, 17, were bound with tape and electrical wire. tims and memories of how the killings transformed the town, have discovered long-lost and overlooked evidence that might unlock the secrets of what happened in Cabin 28. A possible murder weapon has been recovered. A terse voice recording, sealed and buried in a file but never pursued, may at last identify the anonymous caller who claimed knowledge of Tina’s remains. A recovered letter from an early suspect that reads like a smoking-gun confession has reopened avenues left unexplored. For Sheriff Hagwood, a conclusion to the case would reverse his predecessors’ past failures. “Unfinished business is completely unacceptable,” he says. “It is our fundamental obligation to the victims and the surviving family members to understand who did this and why.” “Finally,” says Sheila, “I have somebody that cares.”

Despite a massive search, it would be three years before she was found: Her skull was discovered more than 50 miles away from Cabin 28 on the anniversary of her disappearance. Sue left Connecticut for Northern California, where her brother Don worked in Quincy for the railroad. They relocated just down the highway from Quincy to Keddie and the rustic twobedroom, one-bath Cabin 28 in 1980. Sheila’s little brothers Greg and Rick had one bedroom, while Sue, Sheila and Tina shared the other; Johnny took the basement. On a hill below a mountainside rail depot that once welcomed tourists from the San Francisco Bay area for fishing and horseback riding in the former Gold Rush territory, the Keddie Resort still had its two-story lodge, bar and restaurant. Though the resort was already in decline, Sheila remembers feeling safe and happy there. “I loved it,” she says. “It was lots of snow in the wintertime. We all played outside in the summertime, springtime. It was fun.” From her mom, Sheila learned a love of reading and how to crochet. “She was creative,” Sheila says. Says Rick Sharp, 46: “I don’t ever remember her yelling at us. She was a good mom.” While Sue worked at the Elks Lodge and aspired to take college business classes, Sheila took responsibility for feeding and readying her siblings for school. “She pretty much raised us,” Rick says of his sister. Johnny was “feisty,” says Sheila, prone to hitchhiking into town—but always poised to protect his family. Tina “was definitely younger mentally than she was in age,” Sheila says. “She reminds me of somebody who is very angelic.” Over the years Sheila has tried not to dwell on the day her life changed forever, but the images are ones she can’t push out of her mind: the body of her brother Johnny covered in blood and lying face up beside his best friend Dana; Sue’s body covered by a yellow blanket nearby. All had been bludgeoned with a hammer and stabbed repeatedly. For the first years after the murders, Sheila desperately held out hope that Tina would be found alive, her kidnappers apprehended. “Not knowing where she was for three years,” says Sheila, “it was really, really tough.” The
APRIL 11, 1984 On the third anniversary of the killings, a man collecting bottles in the woods some 50 miles from Keddie finds a severed skull. An anonymous 911 caller later claims the skull is that of Tina Sharp. Authorities confirm her identity through dental records.

split-second joy Sheila felt hearing Tina had been found was crushed moments later by the circumstances. “I didn’t have my big brother to look up to, and I lost my only sister, and we were close,” she says. “It made me stronger, because I’ve had to look out for my two younger brothers. They’re the ones that have kept me going.” But the stalled investigation into the murders weighed heavily. “It was just this open wound that became her life,” says Sheila’s cousin Tammie Davis, 50. Adds Sheila: “I thought the adults would do something. After I got older, you call the sheriff’s office every once in a while, and you hear ‘no new leads,’ ‘nothing’s going on.’ What was I supposed to do?”
MARCH 2016 A junk collector using a metal detector near Keddie finds a bluehandled claw hammer similar to one that Marty Smartt had told police he had lost. Gamberg also discovers a sealed file containing a cassette tape of the anonymous call reporting the discovery of Tina’s remains. Both the hammer and audio recording are sent out for forensic testing. Results are still pending.
APRIL 2016 Thirty-five years after the murders, Gamberg says he is making progress in the investigation and believes he has identified at least six “persons of interest” connected to the case.

A NEW LOOK AT THE EVIDENCE Recently recovered evidence (top) includes a bluehandled steel claw hammer and an audio recording of an anonymous 911 call reportedly identifying Tina’s remains that was found buried in a case file. (A knife used in the killings is also being reexamined.) The case “was poorly investigated,” says investigator Gamberg (with Sheila, in his office in Quincy on April 23), “and that’s a fact.”
Sheriff Hagwood worked the summer before the
murders on a teen painting crew with Johnny and Dana, who were his schoolmates; his mother was a teacher who had Tina in class. A childhood friend had lived in Keddie’s Cabin 28 long before the Sharps moved in. “I stayed in that cabin probably a dozen times,” he says. Named sheriff in 2010, he inherited boxes of files and evidence on the case, and in June 2013 he brought back retired investigator Mike Gamberg to take a fresh look. Gamberg, who was kept off the case by the sheriff at the time, had coached Johnny and Dana in martial arts, and Dana was at his house the day before he died. “It struck this community harder than anything,” says Gamberg, a father of three boys who would gather their friends and sleep outside on summer nights. “When this happened, it all ended.” A theory that Sue associated with the wrong people, that drugs were involved, led nowhere, Gamberg says: “She was never that kind of individual. She was into her kids.” But she did take a side in a marital dispute between neighbors Marilyn and Marty Smartt, urging Marilyn to leave her husband. In a strange twist Marilyn’s

son (and Marty’s stepson) Justin was in Cabin 28 with the youngest Sharp boys, asleep and unharmed during the murders. In a dream he allegedly recounted under hypnosis in the weeks after the murders, he described a scene that had similarities to the crimes. Gamberg now believes Marty Smartt came to the cabin that night with an ex-con friend named Severin John “Bo” Boubede to confront Sue, and that Tina, Johnny and Dana “walked into a situation that was out of control, and it went downhill,” he says. A letter dug out of the case file lends that scenario weight: “I’ve paid the price of your love & now that I’veboughtitwithfourpeopleslives,youtellmewe are through,” Marty wrote Marilyn days after the murders. “Great! What else do you want?”(Marilyn says she never saw the letter until years later.) Gamberg also tracked down a therapist in Reno to whom Marty allegedly confessed—and who was shocked to learn that investigators at the time didn’t use that confession to solve the crimes. Former sheriff Doug Thomas, 76, who took a new job soon after the murders and is retired in Sparks, Nev., confirms that Smartt and Boubede were investigated after the murders, “but no evidence proved their involvement.” He says he was not aware at the time of the letter written to Marilyn, which emerged long after the murders. As for the fact that the case wasn’t solved, he says, “We did the best we could, and unfortunately we didn’t do a good enough job to convict somebody, and that’s a shame.” 54

Before fleeing town, Marty did speak to investigators, according to police records. And while one bloodied hammer turned up at the scene, he said his own claw-headed hammer with a blue handle was missing. As news of Gamberg’s investigation spread, a man using a metal detector reported finding just such a hammer in a pond near the crime scene; it’s being tested for DNA. More surprising to Gamberg was his discovery of a sealed file that held a cassette recording from an anonymous 911 caller saying the skull found in 1984 was Tina’s; it is now being compared to audio interviews of old suspects. “Initially people’s silence was a measure of overwhelming fear,” says Sheriff Hagwood. “That’s transitioned to a fear of being exposed for not having done something they could have done a long time ago. I truly believe there are people alive who can confirm that which we have long suspected.” Though both Boubede and Smartt have since died, “if a case needs to be pinned there, we’ll pin it.” Adds Gamberg: “That in itself is solving the crime.” Sheila and her brothers “will know that somebody never gave up on it.” For Sheila, living 500 miles away in Salem, Ore., that means everything. “I don’t think there really is any type of closure,” she says. “We still have to live on without our loved ones.” Like her brother Rick, she concedes the years she spent making peace with the past won’t change the future. “I need answers,” Sheila says. “Now I honestly think I’m going to get them.”

the Oscar-wining director is finally back behind the camera with his new movie Rules Don’t Apply. The film, which Beatty also cowrote, produced and stars in, is a comedic 1950s-set love story about two naive show-business newcomers (Lily Collins and Alden Ehrenreich) swept up in the controlling web of eccentric billionaire Howard Hughes (Beatty). It’s a story that Beatty, a notorious perfectionist, has been flirting with for 40 years. “People always ask why I don’t work more,” says Beatty. “The truth is, it’s because I’ve also had a life. The biggest thing that’s ever happened to me is my children and Annette. That’s bigger than fame, and it came not a moment too soon.”

arried for 10 years to country star Keith Urban and happily raising their two daughters, Sunday, 8, and Faith, 5, in Nashville, Nicole Kidman says she is in “such a good place.” But the actress, 49, is the first to admit her road to happily ever after had a few hairpin turns along the way. The self-described “shy” girl from Australia was thrust into the worldwide spotlight at 22 after she was cast in Days of Thunder, which led to her marriage to the movie’s star, Tom Cruise. They divorced in 2001, but as her personal life fell apart, her professional one took off, and she won an Oscar two years later for The Hours. Kidman is earning awards buzz again—and exploring issues close to her heart—with her new movie, the true-life drama Lion (see review, page 42). She plays Sue Brierley, the Australian adoptive mom of an Indian boy who searches for his birth family. Kidman reflects on her journey with People and Entertainment Weekly’s editorial director in the latest episode of The Jess Cagle Interview. “What happens when you get to my age is that it all becomes ‘Ah, this is just life,’ ” she says. “What’s going to come is ‘I’m still going to come. Go with completely the flow. We’ll see what’s in awe that around the corner.”

What kind of conversations did you have with Sue Brierley when you set out to play her in the film?

She came to Sydney and we sat in my apartment and just talked. We basically bared ourselves to each other. I could ask her anything and she answered it. She told me really deep, honest truths about herself. I did the same. We formed an immediate connection. You have two adopted children [Isabella, 23, and Connor, 21, with Cruise]. At some point, when you adopt children, they’ll be curious about their birth parents. Do you prepare for that moment?
I can’t speak for other parents, but certainly I do, and Sue did. It’s very much a part of the whole relationship, so it needs to be addressed and discussed. I know the advice you’re given as parents of adopted children was “If they want to find their birth parents, you support that.” Days of Thunder launched you here and all over the world. Do you remember the audition process for that?
I remember being so nervous and seeing Tom

Cruise drive up in a Porsche. He got out of the car and . . . my jaw dropped. Then I had to audition in front of Tony Scott, Don Simpson, Jerry Bruckheimer, Robert Towne and Tom. I was like, “No way, I’m not going to get this.” They called that afternoon, and I had the job.

I was just like, “Oh my God, Mom!” Yeah, that was huge. You know, obviously, it changed my life extraordinarily. I’m so grateful for the film, for everything that came with it—a beautiful marriage and two beautiful children. The rest is history. You were promoting Moulin Rouge! when I first met you. You were going through [your] divorce.
Thank God for [director Baz Luhrmann] and all of Fox, actually, at that time. Everyone was so good to me. It was like, “Come on, off we go. Onward.” It was a really good approach. were in that. What kind of advice do you have to someone whose partner or spouse needs help with that?
You can’t save somebody, they’ve got to save themselves. Which is a very big thing for people, like me, who go, “I can take care of you. I can do it.” As much as I thought, “I can do all the work for him. I can make it better. I can help,” at some point, you just have to say, “I love you and I’m here when you decide to do the work. If you don’t, then that’s it.” Because you cannot save a human being. They have to save themselves. But you can love them and give them enormous support.

THE GIFT OF A FACE
Tragically disfigured for 14 years following a horrific accident, firefighter Patrick Hardison becomes the successful recipient of the world’s most extensive face transplant by J E F F N E L S O N
I
n October 2015, for the first time in more than 14 years, Patrick Hardison felt like just another face in the crowd. “The day I got out of the hospital, I needed a few things, so I went to Macy’s,” says Hardison, 42. “I could tell the difference right then. Nobody was staring, nobody was saying anything. I was just there.” For Hardison, a firefighter who lost most his face to severe burns he suffered in a 2001 fire, it was the moment he began to reclaim his life. “Just a year and a half ago, I didn’t think there was going to be a better tomorrow,” he says. “You have to keep hope alive.” Last year Hardison became the recipient of the world’s most extensive face transplant when doctors took the face of an organ donor and fitted it to Hardison’s badly disfigured visage. A medical team led by Dr. Eduardo Rodriguez, a face transplantation specialist at NYU Langone Medical Center in New York, who helped pioneer the ground-breaking procedure, performed the 26-hour surgery on Aug. 14, 2015, two days after finding the perfect donor match— including blood type, skeletal shape and skin and hair color—in David Rodebaugh, a 26-year-old Brooklyn bike mechanic who had died from brain trauma sustained in a cycling accident. This summer he brought his five kids—Alison, 22, Dalton, 19, Averi, 17, Braden, 13, and Cullen, 12— to Disney World for their first family vacation in years. “Now I’m just a normal guy,” says Hardison. “There’s no staring, no kids running off crying— that means everything.” PEOPLE December 5, 2016

Since the surgery, Hardison’s face has gradually transformed as the swelling goes down. About 40 face transplants have been performed worldwide, but “Patrick’s procedure,” says Dr. Rodriguez, “includes the largest amount of soft tissue that’s been transplanted in medicine. Not only the front of the face, but also the ears, eyelids, nose, lips, skin of the neck and hair-bearing scalp.” LiveOnNY President and CEO Helen Irving hopes Hardison’s story and Nancy’s decision to donate her son’s organs inspire others. “To see the gift that she’s been able to give through her son,” says Irving, “means a great deal to her.”

Hardison had always been “a jokester and a people person,” says his ex-wife Chrissi Hardison, 41, who married him in 1998. “He was a hard worker, a provider, and he loved to be around his friends at the fire department. It was a big part of his life.” That life changed on Sept. 5, 2001, when he got a call to respond to a raging house fire. “I was at work, and the call came in,” remembers Hardison, “so I went down to the firehouse, got in the truck, went to the fire and started doing what we do. It was just a normal day.” But as Hardison was looking for a woman in the blaze, the ceiling collapsed on him in a shower of sparks and flames. On the ground and covered in burning debris, one of the last things he remembers was his

protective mask melting onto his face. The next thing he knew, he was waking up in the hospital, his face completely covered in bandages. “I knew I was hurt,” he says, “but I didn’t know how bad it was.” When the bandages came off six months later, Hardison had lost his hair, ears, eyelids, nose and lips. His daughter Alison, just 7 at the time, remembers seeing her dad for the first time. “His voice was the same but he looked totally different. It was very traumatic,” she says. Adds Chrissi: “The kids were scared of him in the beginning. That was hard for him.” As was adjusting to his loss of independence; Hardison had to rely on family members to help him eat and get him to doctors appointments because he could no longer drive. Plagued by excruciating pain, both from the accident and from the more than 70 surgeries and skin grafts he underwent as a result, he developed an addiction to painkillers (which he’s since overcome) and plunged into a deep depression. “There was a big personality change,” says Chrissi, who had two more children with Hardison (Braden in 2003 and Cullen in 2004) before they finally divorced in 2008. “He became more introverted and withdrawn because no one could understand what he was going through. He was so angry.” By 2012 further complications involving Hardison’s eyelids had caused his vision to deteriorate. He was told he would eventually be completely blind. That same year one of his doctors referred him to Dr. Rodriguez. “I was

absolutely terrified,” says Alison. “I was, like, ‘Dad, why do you want to do this? You’re perfect to us.’ And he said, ‘I’m not, though. I want to look normal when I walk you down the aisle.’” Says Hardison: “There are things worse in life than death. It doesn’t scare me. It was for my kids.” In August 2015 Hardison got a call from Dr. Rodriguez that LiveOnNY—an organ donation organization—had found a donor, and he flew to New York for the transplant. This time, when his kids visited him at the hospital eight weeks later, they found the father they’d almost lost all those years ago. “I kissed his cheek,” says Alison. “His cheeks were warm,andheblinkedhiseyes.That’s somethingIhadnotfelt or seen for [14] years. I just walked out into the hallway and started crying. He’s been given a gift to have a second chance at life—that’s what he’s doing.”
On Nov. 7 Hardison got to meet the woman responsible for
that second chance—his donor David’s mother, Nancy Millar. (Her son’s kidneys, liver and heart were also donated.)

“Without her it wouldn’t have been possible,” he says. “It’s like she’s family. We connected that easily.” For her part, Millar, 55 and a toy maker who lives in Columbus, Ohio, had just one request. “I said, ‘Can I kiss your forehead?’” she says. “That’s the one thing I wanted to do because every night before David went to bed when he was little, I kissed his forehead.” Now Hardison is planning the next chapter of his life, hoping to start a career as a motivational speaker. “I want to share my story with wounded warriors, first responders and the average person who has no hope and is injured like I was,” he says. “I didn’t have any hope. Now I’ve got a new outlook on life. You have to push through the bad times to get to the good ones.”

hey have castles to visit, palaces to explore and a grand house in the country to call home, but there is one place that holds special delight for Prince George and Princess Charlotte: Granny’s house. There, at a manor home in Bucklebury, England—50 miles west of London—Carole Middleton has made sure the backyard garden and pond are a children’s paradise, complete with ducklings and chickens. “There’s a massive pen, and it looks absolutely beautiful,” says a family friend. “The children love to come and play.” To grandmother’s house they go—with such frequency that Carole, 61, and her husband Michael, 67, have become key figures in guiding the next generation of royals. It’s the latest remarkable chapter for the mom of three—daughters Kate, 34, and Pippa, 33, and son James, 29—who became a self-made millionaire after she and Michael started their company Party 73

skiing trip, and when Will and Kate went to India for a week in April, it was Carole who looked after them. Along the way she has earned an unprecedented welcome inside the royal family—including from the Queen herself. The 90-yearold monarch, who was not close with William’s mother, Princess Diana, and was pained by the divorces of three of her children, is now determined to be more inclusive. “The Queen has made a big effort to include the Middletons much more because of the circumstances of William’s childhood,” says Majesty editor-in-chief Ingrid Seward. For their part the Middletons have always been a close family—a bond that is only enhanced by the grandkids. These days when Carole stops by a Bucklebury pub or the annual holiday market (which she visited with Charlotte last year), “people will often jokingly call her ‘Grandma’ for a laugh, which she enjoys,” says a family friend. “She adores being a granny and is always telling people that. She says, ‘I’m loving it.’ ”

Pieces in 1987 so she could work from home and raise their children. As she did then, Carole (the daughter of Ron, who worked in trucking and as a builder, and Dorothy, a onetime store clerk) is making sure she’s involved in
the day-to-day lives of the family’s youngest members. “Carole will often take the children to Bucklebury Farm Park,” says a villager. “George loves it. She’s just like any other granny, playing with him and fussing with him, making sure he’s clean or has a snack in his hand.” It’s an approach that diverges from the traditional arm’s-length royal model, epitomized by reigning greatgrandmother Queen Elizabeth. “Carole is doing the things a nanny or governess used to,”says royal historian Robert Lacey. Stylish, athletic and fond of “a glass of wine and a gossip” with friends, Carole “loves dancing and letting down her hair,” says the Bucklebury local. Says Lacey: “In terms of a young, trendy granny, there’s been no one like her in the royal family at all.” Although Princess Kate and Prince William have nanny Maria Turrion Borrallo on staff, they often rely on Caroleforextra support. Though she’d never met Nkhama, Metoyer, a member of the school’s NAACP chapter, tweeted “#IWalkWithNatasha” and invited other students to join her to walk Nkhama to class. By the time she and her friends showed up outside Nkhama’s next class, on Nov. 11, the hashtag had gone viral— and a crowd of 350, including university teachers andadministrators, hadgatheredto walk withher, chanting “All love, no hate” as they marched. “The outpouring of love made me feel a lot better,” says Nkhama. “I hope people everywhere realize that racism is not okay. The psychology major, 19, was headed to neuroscience class on the morning after Election Day when a man with blond hair seemed to deliberately run into her on the busy campus walkway. “He said, ‘No n-----s allowed on the sidewalk,’” recalls Nkhama. “Someone behind me told him that was not okay, but the guy said, ‘I’m just trying to make America great again.’” That her unknown assailant would utter the N-word in one breath and parrot Donald Trump’s presidential campaign slogan in the next shocked Nkhama, who was born in Zambia and moved to Dallas with her family when she was 2. It’s been one decade since a documentary
special introduced viewers to Kate Gosselin, a pediatric nurse, her husband, Jon, an IT specialist, and their eight kids— twins and sextuplets. In the subsequent 10 years, even those who weren’t die-hard viewers learned what transpired as the disintegration of Jon and Kate’s marriage and Kate’s determination to forge ahead as a single mom played out for public consumption on the now-titled Kate Plus 8. The latest season will debut on Nov. 22 on TLC, with an anniversary special looking back at just how much the Gosselins have changed. Here, Kate reflects on some of the more pivotal moments. A Settlement has been reached in a class action lawsuit claiming that Caribbean Cruise Line, Inc., Vacation Ownership Marketing Tours, Inc., and The Berkley Group, Inc. (collectively, “Defendants”) violated a federal law called the Telephone Consumer Protection Act. Defendants deny any wrongdoing. The settlement doesn’t decide who is right, but rather is a compromise to end the lawsuit and avoid the uncertainties and costs associated with a trial. Am I part of the Settlement? You may be a Settlement Class Member if you received a prerecorded or robotic voice telephone call between August 2011 and August 2012 that offered a free cruise in exchange for taking a public opinion and/or political survey. You may have received notice about this case before. The case has settled and you have a right to file a claim for a share of the Settlement Fund. 2009: END OF AN ERA The announcement of the split was made on an episode of the show. Says Kate: “My utmost concern has always been what my kids would see and hear. It was about us having the ability to tell it from our point of view, on our show, rather than having the tabloids do it for us. Contrary to what others might say, I think it was dealt with very sensitively.”

2009: A FINAL FAMILY PHOTO Shortly before the split became official, Kate and Jon celebrated the sextuplets’ 5th birthday. “I insisted upon that photo, because I knew it would be our last family photo ever. I wanted it for the kids. It’s hard for me to look at, but I think that was also one of the first times I felt sure we’d be okay. I wasn’t sure how, and I was scared, but I still knew it’d be okay.”
2016: MORE CHANGES AHEAD Kate continues to marvel at how her brood has grown: “In terms of their maturity, the way they’ll talk to me, their abilities now—it is mind-blowing.” Her son Collin (inset) is currently enrolled in a school helping him with his special needs. “I don’t know what the road ahead entails, but I’m very happy with the care that he’s getting. As a mom, when you can’t give your kids what they need, it’s a huge comfort to find people who can.”

or Micah Fowler, official adulthood began with a bang.“IfoundoutIbooked the role of JJ on my 18th birthday,” the actor says of scoring one of the leading roles on ABC’s breakout new comedy Speechless. “Best birthday present ever!” Making the moment even sweeter is the fact that Fowler’s professional accomplishment will leave a lasting legacy. The actor, who has cerebral palsy—a disorder characterized by the loss of motor function that can be caused by brain damage at birth—is breaking new ground by depicting the disorder onscreen. “Actors with disabilities face typecasting and a lack of auditioning opportunities, but I don’t let this define me,” he says. “I see those things as challenges and not barriers.” Raised in Barnegat Township, N.J., Fowler began acting in theater at age 5 and went on to appear on children’s television shows like Sesame Street and in the film Labor Day,despite his symptoms, which include muscle weakness, spasticity, rigid legs and occasional difficulties in communication. (Unlike his character onSpeechless,however, Fowler is able to speak without any help.) Landing on a major network sitcom has been a “groundbreaking” experience, he says. In the future the avidStar Wars fan dreams of playing a villain in that franchise and hopes to inspire a new generation of actors with special needs. “When following your dreams, don’t set limits,” he advises. “Chase them even when it looks impossible.Youcontrolyourown destiny by believing in yourself.”

EVEN BEFORE SARA RUE AND HER HUSBAND, Kevin Price, got engaged, the couple knew they wanted to adopt a child together one day. “It’s just something that felt right to both of us,” says the Impastor actress, who welcomed their first daughter, 3-year-old Talulah, in 2013. After struggling to conceive a second child naturally, Rue, 37, and her husband, 41, decided to complete their family by adopting. “We just wanted another child, and as long as we were her mom and dad and would get to raise her with the same values and warmth and fun and kindness that we have been able to raise Talulah with, it really didn’t matter where she came from,” says the star. Opting for an open adoption, Rue accompanied Adelaide’s birth mother to all doctor’s appointments and was the first person to hold Adelaide at the hospital.

4 large firm-ripe mangoes, peeled, pitted and cubed (about 4 cups) 2 1⁄ 2 cups fine granulated cane sugar 4 tsp. lemon zest plus 6 tbsp. fresh juice (from 2 lemons) 1 tbsp. finely chopped ginger 1⁄ 4 cup cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces 2 cups self-rising flour, sifted, plus more for dusting work surface 2 tsp. coarsely ground black peppercorns 3⁄ 4 cup whole buttermilk 2 tbsp. unsalted butter, melted Pinch of kosher salt 1. To prepare the jam, combine mangoes, sugar, lemon zest, lemon juice and ginger in a large (4-quart) heavybottomed saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring often. Reduce to medium-low, and cook, stirring often, until mixture appears glossy and thickened, 45 to 60 minutes. Pour jam into a heatproof bowl, and cool
completely, about 1 hour. (Store jam in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 month.) 2. To prepare the biscuits, preheat oven to 450°. Cut cold butter pieces into sifted flour in a large bowl, using a pastry blender or your fingertips, until crumbly. Sprinkle pepper over flour mixture. 3. Add buttermilk, stirring with a fork until a shaggy dough is formed. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured work surface, and knead lightly, 3 or 4 times. Pat or roll dough to a 3⁄4-inch thickness. Cut dough with a 23⁄4-inch round cutter, patting or rerolling scraps, if necessary, to make 8 biscuits. 4. Place biscuits, with sides touching (this will help them rise), in a greased 9-inch cast-iron skillet. Bake in oven until golden brown, about 16 minutes. Remove from oven; brush biscuits with melted butter, and sprinkle with salt. Serve with reserved mango jam. Serves: 8 Active time: 35 minutes Total time: 1 hour, 40 minutes

With processor running, slowly drizzle in 1⁄ 3 cup oil until smooth. Set aside. 2. Preheat grill pan to high. Toss blanched beans with remaining 2 tablespoons lemon juice, 3 tablespoons oil and 1⁄4 teaspoon each salt and pepper. Cook, uncovered, until charred and tender, about 5 minutes. 3. Toss grilled beans with reserved herb dressing. Gently fold in chives and remaining 2 tablespoons each parsley, tarragon and Parmesan and 1 tablespoon lemon zest. Serve with soft-cooked eggs. 2 cups ground gingersnap cookies 1 tbsp. cornstarch 1⁄ 8 tsp. cayenne pepper (optional) 6 tbsp. unsalted butter, melted 1 lb. plus 2 oz. cream cheese, softened 3⁄ 4 cup packed light brown sugar 11⁄ 4 cup canned pumpkin puree 2 tsp. instant espresso granules 1⁄ 2 tsp. kosher salt 1⁄ 2 tsp. ground cinnamon 2 large eggs plus 1 large egg yolk 1. Preheat oven to 375°. Stir cookie crumbs, cornstarch
and cayenne in a bowl. Add butter, and stir until evenly incorporated. Press mixture into the bottom of a greased 9-inch springform pan and up the sides as far as you’re able. Bake until golden, 10 to 15 minutes. Remove from oven, and set aside. Reduce oven to 325°. 2. Beat cream cheese and brown sugar with a mixer fitted with the paddle attachment on medium speed until very smooth, about 4 minutes, stopping to scrape sides of bowl several times. Add pumpkin, espresso, salt and cinnamon, and beat until combined. Add the eggs and egg yolk, 1 at a time, beating until just
incorporated after each addition. Do not overmix. 3. Pour filling into prepared crust. Wrap the outside of the pan with foil, and place in a roasting pan. Pour hot water into roasting pan, filling to halfway up the side of the springform pan. 4. Bake in water bath until the filling is almost set, 80 to 90 minutes. The center will barely move when pan is touched. Remove from oven, and cool in water bath 10 minutes. Remove from bath, and chill, uncovered, 2 hours to overnight. Top with more cookie crumbs, if desired. Makes: One 9-inch cake Active time: 30 minutes Total time: 2 hours, plus chilling
