are learning to use a lathe, TIG weld and hand shape metal today than ever before in the industry’s past. THE CULTURE: While there are more brands of motorcycles and a more diverse crowd than ever before it would seem that our culture as a whole is about as divided as it ever has been. The Hipsters, the Big Wheel Bagger Guys, the Rockers and the Mods, Hippies, Old Guys, Grey Beards… Really it’s too much to keep track of and begs for something to bring us all back together under one headline, motorcycles. Still, each of these segments has their strong points, the Hipster kids are killing it with fantastic events that partially resemble the seventies DQG VWLOO PDQDJH WR GHÀQH WKHLU RZQ times. The Big Wheel Bagger crowd continues to drive the economics of the upper parts of our industry with no end in sight. The Baddest Bagger and Perewitz Paint shows we have attended all over the country are proof of that, with more high end vehicles in one place since the doors of OCC closed. In the middle there are a ton of folks who love it all and the good thing is their out there doing it like never before. For them, hard times provide the need for a get-away and the motorcycle has always been the machine to deliver that. I suspect that as we turn the calendar on a new year, a new presidency and a new direction for the United States, little will change that one great part of what we do. Age seems to come with wisdom as a lot of the culture turns toward serious gear for riding. What used to be the trend of taking off in a jean jacket and backwards hat sees many more riders today gearing up for the ride. Rides, Runs And Events: National events seemed to stabilize somewhat in 2016, but the smaller regional rallies took a stronger foothold as people had less money still for big adventures. Small shows and niche events popped up everywhere and that was great for the scene as it gave us all a real solid look at the cultural differences in what we do from spot to spot. Events like St. Louis Cycle Show Case, Mama Tried, Fuel Cleveland, Bikes & Brews and the Oily Souls kept that same tradition going. On the national front, in addition to being

the 35th Anniversary of the Buffalo &KLS LW DOVR PDUNHG WKH Ă€UVW \HDU RI their new highway that cut off before Sturgis and went straight to the Chip. 2016 sadly also marked the last year for The Love Ride. That’s right, the 32 year iconic California event held its last hurrah this year. And speaking of California for a minute, 2016 marked the year that lane splitting became legal. From the vintage end of the world the Pate Swap Meet held its second event and added a solid south western event to the AMCA calendar. One giant change in the event scene ZDV WKH UHVXUJDQFH RI DPDWHXU Ă DW track racing brought on by Roland Sands and his Hooligan Racing. It seemed as if everyone was just waiting for a reason and Sands gave them that by example and more. By WKH HQG RI WKH \HDU DPDWHXU Ă DW WUDFN races were as common as vendor row to any event you happened to be at. What I can say about this that's good, as some professional racers may not agree with the format, it does bring back the basic principal of the motorcyle, people having fun on them. Even for the fans, it provides great entertainment for those that might not have a backgound in racing. They can just show up, pick a favorite racer and route him on to victory. The Motorcycle Social-media and other: New reality TV shows like Sacred Steel and Wrench Against The Machine has started to take a closer look at some of the grass roots of our culture. This was started last year with Discovery Channels show that featured lesser known builders from the custom scene. Of course not all media is good. It seems as bad as this year’s elections were, the state of social media continues to travel along a downward spiral in terms of values. Between that and the plague that is Amazon and EBay, where uneducated consumers buy products they expect local shops to unscrew for them, our access to everything fast is becoming more of a challenge than ever before. At least the elections came to an end, the fact that no matter where you go you can see groups of people holding their phones and staring downward in groups, of people they traveled across the country to be with, who are also staring at their phones. It’s time we call for a time out on these CYCLE SOURCE January ‘17

devices to spend a little with each other again. But that might just be me being idealistic. At least we now have a vice president that rides a motorcycle, I mean, how much of a nut job could he be? So How Did We Do? 2016 was another monster year for Cycle Source Magazine. In spite of the distribution part of our industry still failing to help publishers, actually they went in reverse in some big ways, we continued to add to our market strength through our national distribution deals with WalMart and one with Pilot/Flying J. At the beginning of the year we found ourselves as one of the top custom motorcycle publications in the US and we did everything we could this year to stay right in that spot. The big changes for you our readers were that we added a perfect bound spine and moved up to 116 pages in April and remained there the entire year. By the numbers, our year looked like this: 12 Editorials, 61 Feature Bikes, 12 Pin-ups, 50 Events Covered, 48 New Products, 278 Buyers’ Guide Products, 129 News’ Articles, 24 Human Interest Pieces, 7 Interviews, 5 Shop Visits, 7 Test Rides, 10 FXR Columns, 38 Tech Articles, 41 Staff Columns, 2 Full Throttle Rock Columns, 10 Product Test Articles, 11 Photo Hunts, 12 Product Spotlights, 10 Reader’s Rides, 16 Riding Adventure Stories, $UWLVW 3URÀOHV DQG 6SHFLDO ,VVXHV We launched a brand new initiative in Sturgis called Grease & Gears *DUDJH DQG ÀQDOO\ JRW JRRG WUDFWLRQ along with all the other magazines as Harley-Davidson came on as a sponsor of the Editor’s Choice Bike Shows. It all adds up to a hell of a pile of work and couldn’t be done without a killer staff. Thank you all for letting us GR ZKDW ZH ORYH 0D\ ÀQG \RX happy with family, and God willing, a job that provides you with enough money to take a ride. Throwing caution to the wind, Chris embraced the project and the never-ending design vision of Dragan. What was ahead would be a 7-month project to perfection. And when you hear her she is still a ripper. Keeping the overall appeal of the bike simple yet still a head turner is the classic paint job done by Scotty Kid Graphics. For the most part, this bike was built with design in mind, no thrills (not really), bare bone, light as possible, with a stock engine. As the story goes, there were many setups involved to make this bike just right. Being an engineer the ride was more important than the look for Dragan. But, in the end Chris would put his Design Worx touch on this ride to make it look just as cool as the others that have come before. And that he did and as always did it to perfection. At that end of what the owner considered a very long wait, we believe he thought the wait was well worth it as Dragan was quoted saying “It’s the best handling 1975 bike I ever rode. Perfect setup for cruising or a little mayhem”

Let’s Keep “The Right to Modify Times A Rolling Article And Photos By: Bob Kay

I

t was December of 2015 when I decided it was time to do something about my concerns regarding the changing majority demographic, the evolving custom bike scene and the potential threat to lose our right to modify motorcycles. Step number one involved a meeting with Motorcycle Industry Council to determine if my efforts could lead somewhere. I was given the go ahead to pursue, if there was interest. Next, was setting up a Daytona meeting with a few of my younger colleagues. I did my sanity check with none other than the Cycle Source Chief, Chris Callen; his boss and master organizer, Heather; The hip entrepreneur, Jason Paul Michaels; and model turned ride everywhere lady, Leticia Cline and ÀQDOO\ P\ ULGLQJ EXGG\ and partner in crime, Kyle Shorey. They gave enough info and encouragement to set up the big meeting during the Handbuilt Show in Austin. I contacted Alan from Revival Cycles, and along with his partner Stefan allowed us to use their shop for our big POW WOW. Well, I got to tell you I was blown

When the meeting was over we KDG LGHQWLÀHG WKH XQLTXH PLOOHQQLDO LQà XHQFH DQG VRFLDOL]DWLRQ DIIHFWLQJ the motorcycle industry. We discussed

the need to attract new riders with easier access to training and possible tiered licensing programs like some European countries had in place. We talked about positive changes that had the potential to lower insurance rates for teen riders. The conversation led

to ways to involve the community and create a broader awareness that would make motorcycles as transportation a real consideration for more people, especially city dwellers. Then came the HOHSKDQW LQ WKH URRP WKH LQĂ XHQFH of custom bikes and builders on the entire motorcycle industry and the perceived and very real threat of losing “The Right to Modifyâ€?. Besides all the concern, there was a huge generation gap between the younger builders and the old guard

that needed to be closed. We had to get this story out to the industry for consideration so a presentation was set up for our industry trade show, Custom Culture at AIMExpo. The announcement went out for “Our Changing Industry,. A Millennial Roundtable. It was standing room only as information was disseminated by a distinguished panel including, David Zemla from S&S Cycle, Sarah Lahalih IURP 5R\DO (QĂ€HOG Kevin Dunworth from Loaded Gun Customs, Tim Harney from Harney Custom Motorcycles, Jason Paul Michaels from Standard Motorcycle Co and Casey Potter from Bell Helmets. When it was over the audience couldn’t wait to ask the panel more questions, it was great. A recent trip to Germany for the AMD World Championship of Custom Bike Building revealed that Europe had taken the lead in

many of these issues. Maybe because two wheeled transportation is more accepted and maybe because TUV regulation seemed to be relentless. I have been told that the EU has RIĂ€FLDOO\ UHFRJQL]HG ´7KH 5LJKW WR

We have talked about creating a Custom Culture Advisory Forum to address the ongoing factors affecting our livelihood and lifestyle. There is even talk of an International Custom Forum. Pat Patterson is far from being an unknown in the world of custom motorcycle building but his story coming up might be. 2016’s best customLedproduct of the year Sled Customs Invader Wheels

True to form, the minds behind Led Sled Customs have taken something from the past of custom motorcycling and made it into their own. From the traditional designs of the iconic Invader Wheels, Pat and his crew have relaunched a new era for the look and styling of that famous brand. Taking the approach of American made and better quality with them, Pat has added a variety of styles and sizes, from Square, round and their trademark “Speed Hole Design to the mix. Of course they piloted this whole venture by proving their theories on their own builds, in a way that put them in very high demand. For taking what was old and making it new and even better we are happy to name the Led Sled Customs Invader Wheels as the 2016 Cycle Source Readers’ Best Custom Product Of The Year.

Though riders may start out as strangers, the struggle to survive while coaxing a cantankerous old bike along an unfamiliar route thousands of miles from home tends to turn acquaintances into families and it’s that kind of camaraderie that the Cannonball is best known for. The ancient bikes need constant tinkering and riders took the time to minister to the machines alongside the roadways, at gas stops, during breaks and in hotel parking lots in the evenings. By the time the group reached Dodge City, Kansas for the one day of rest, everyone was ready for a breather. Staff medic Vicki Sanfelipo, who rode her own modern bike along the route, tended to a

his time of year we take a look at everything that we did in the previous twelve issues. In this section we like to acknowledge the best ten bikes of the 60 or so we have had grace our pages throughout the year. Some of these are professional builders, some are just regular guys but all have been put to a vote and our readers have selected these ten as the “Best Bikes Of 2016.” Anyone who builds a custom bike puts their heart and

soul into it so just getting it featured in a magazine is accolade enough. When they get elevated above their peers it’s a very special honor. Thank you to each of the builders that chose Cycle Source this year to feature their hard work. We hope you enjoy these great customs from our 2016 issue pages! -Chris

1. CUPCAKE

forever two wheels maine

This bike was featured on our April 2016 cover and it never stopped getting attention throughout the year. No matter where Nick Beaulieu would end up with Cupcake, there was sure to be a line of onlookers to check it out. Funny, since the philosophy behind it is excessive simplicity. But when Nick got the invitation to build a bike for Artistry In Iron, he knew he had to bring nothing short of his best to the table. What he came up with not only scored him our cover but your vote for the best feature bike of the year! CYCLE SOURCE January ‘17

2. WASTED AND WOUNDED

faith forgotten’s naked truth exhibit build This bike was from our June 2016 cover and I have long been a fan of Will Ramsey’s work and dedication to perfection. When it came time for him to build a bike for Mike Lichter’s Naked Truth, it was a show that was made for his level of craftsmanship. Not only did Will kill it with an all titanium motorcycle, he completed the motorcycle in two stages. One without any additional covering, then one in full paint. It is an amazing motorcycle and entirely deserving of this award.

3. PURPLE HAZE

jason ochoa’s 1955 panhead

Jason scored the cover of our March ‘16 issue with this little beauty for standing out above the crowd at our bike show during the Lone Star Rally. Jason likes to say that he’s not really a builder but the end result of his efforts here left little to be said to that end. 5. LOVE MACHINE

Paul Posso’s two wheeled death machine

This was a bike that ended up in the March ‘16 Lone Star Rally issue as well. We happened upon this killer sled and an incredible location for the shoot at the same time. I damn near killed a van full of contributors as I swung a u-turn right in the middle of Galveston just to get the chance to shoot it. Originally this bike started as a ‘69 shovel roller that Paul bought and turned over to Jerimiah of Love Cycles who insisted it be remade with an original Bull Neck Knucklehead frame. What they came up with in the mix was poetry in motion.

6. FAST LANE PAN

bryan lane goes outside the box

This bike was spotted by Roadside Marty at Willie’s Tropical “Choppertime show in Daytona. As soon as we saw it we set it up to be in the May ‘16 issue. As it turned out, matching a narrow glide front end with a cafe styled rear fender and of all things a Suzuki TS250 gas tank is a great recipe for a custom Panhead. We fell in love with he bike because it was all things that most people aren’t doing with a Pan today, Hell, Bryan even kept the swingarm frame. In a sea of far out customs that were at the show that day, this bike truly stood out and I’m thrilled it made the top ten from this year.

ello there, open highway friends. Well, I’m back from the UK tour and what an amazing time we had. We played some amazing shows, in some very iconic venues, London’s Wembley Arena, Cardiff, Manchester and Birmingham; home of Black Sabbath and Judas 3ULHVW WZR KXJH LQĂ XHQFHV LQ P\ drumming. We’ll be winding up the year on the East coast and heading home for Thanksgiving. We’ll be taking the rest of the year off to rest up and be ready to hit again in early 2017. I’m sitting in the lobby of a hotel in Lewiston, Idaho staring out the window thinking to myself “I had no idea Idaho had such beautiful mountainsâ€? all I’ve ever seen of this state is the bigger cities. how many people have come in and out of my life in the past 11 years. I think for me that is the greatest part of my gig and life! My Father always said “you can tell if a man was a true friend, by how many people attend his funeralâ€? and it’s funny it’s taken me all these years to truly understand that phrase. Sometimes, we get so busy making a life that we forget to live it. I, for one, am a perfect example of that. I vowed to myself, at the end of this year and touring cycle that I would really make an effort to hit more bike events, see more of my friends and ride a hell of a lot more and just stop and smell the roses. I personally know of too many people that have said to me “Man, I wish I would have taken more time to enjoy lifeâ€? I feel as though I should learn from those people, take their advice and “Live a little moreâ€? because at some point it’s all gonna go away. The smoke will clear; the lights will fade and I don’t want to live with regrets. ike most of you reading this, I absolutely love choppers. When you see one as nice as this, you take notice! I once read an article that Willie G. said the Factory gives you a good platform to turn your motorcycle into your own. While I’m pretty sure that he didn’t mean to chop it up like this, it seems that a nice OEM HarleyDavidson has always been a great platform to start building a chopper. Rhett Holley is the man responsible for the beautiful specimen gracing these pages. Some of you might not have heard his name but rest assured you’ll be hearing it soon enough. Rhett owns and operates a shop in Dry Fork VA called The Butcher Chop with his dad Lee Holley and his good friend Will Heath. They may be more “country than most shops but they can keep up with the best of them. Growing up farming tobacco and learning to keep the farm equipment in good working order from the time he was about 7 years old has given him the skills that it takes to tackle pretty much any project he gets asked to do.

Rhett says he couldn’t get enough and was obsessed with reading all the chopper magazines that he could get his hands. The turning point came when he went the Smokeout in 2000 and ended up hating his Softail on the ride home. He sold the Softail and soon came a few other bikes that he did a little more to each time, which led to other people asking him to do work for them as well as a few complete builds. This bike came to be when a local guy called the shop wanting a set of custom pipes made for his Kawasaki Vulcan. The local dealership had told him The Butcher Chop was the place to go for custom work. Well, Rhett just happened to have a build on the lift when John came by to discuss the pipes and once he saw the project Rhett was working on he was hooked! When he came back to pick up the Vulcan he told Rhett that he wanted to build a chopper. After looking at hundreds of pictures with every style of bike

I can hear and see some of you laughing and shaking your heads but’s that’s how chopper dreams are made into reality for a lot of builds! From there, it went straight to the frame jig and once the rear was given a good hardtail section the down tubes were then bent up and welded into place. The sheet metal was up next. This proved to be one of the most challenging parts of the build. That sweet sissy bar needed a real King and Queen seat to help set it off so Rhett fabbed up a seat pan and sent it to one of the best, Jordan Dickinson of Union Speed and Style. Jordan nailed the look they were after. While all of this was going on the frame and sheet metal were delivered to Rhett’s longtime friend Jason Hancock at 33 Kustom Kolor for that sweet candy

ith the TV on in the background, unaware of the characters or story, Jimmy Frizzell sits on his couch and does what he knows best, creates art. From as far back as he can remember, he has been drawing on pretty much anything he can get his hands on. So much so that at one point he would draw in his head and forget to translate the ideas to paper. Most of the stuff that was actually translated to paper, was either given away or left behind. Luckily, his darling wife Abbey had saved some pieces from when he was in high school. He attended art school for about a year but realized quickly that he couldn’t stand the big-mouthed artists that also went there, so he left. For Jimmy, art is personal, and it humbles him. He would much rather give KLV SLHFHV DZD\ WKDQ VHOO WKHP IRU SURÀW ´, like to believe I’m honest about what I do. He’s also moved to hard-pressed Bristol paper to give his sketches a more professional feel. Though even with some changes he is sticking to his own style which is incredibly important to him. In Jimmy’s words, the art in our industry follows whatever trend is popular and shifts back and forth. “I stopped really giving a f#@k. Unfortunately, he works a 50-60 hour-aweek job, and art often falls to the side but someday Jimmy would love to be able to call himself a full-time artist, without the art losing its purity. It is a pleasure and an honor to work alongside a human as creative and inspiring as Jimmy and I can’t wait to see where his art will take him. (P.S. Jimmy: I hope your thumb feels better.) done during the summer months. To me, winter is a fresh landscape and a chance to have the roads to myself. The weekend warriors have parked their bikes, plugged in the battery tenders and taken to the slopes for some winter activities. The cold road is mine and I’m going to enjoy every minute of it. The fact of the matter is though; I am not completely alone in this. There are a handful of diehards around these parts that are willing to join me on whatever ridiculous ride idea I may have. Those of us who don’t believe that just because the mercury drops that our kickstands should to.

The best part about it though, is that I don’t think he even realizes it, he’s the kind of guy that does something so ridiculous, yet awesome at the same time, that you just have to laugh. Because of this, we get along great. I once got him to go choppering up a jeep trail with me without any question at all. We once went skiing down an icy mountain dirt road‌on our motorcycles. We went “springâ€? moto camping one time and woke to 15 degree temps. Nothing but smiles and laughter out of that guy during all these adventures. t started as a pile of parts, a seized up motor and a trip to Fredericksburg, Texas, just a small jaunt from Austin, TX where the builder lives and works. Seriously, that had to have been the best $100 dollars ever spent!! The story begins way back in 2009, and it took a few too many years to complete this baby due to the many hats the builder wears, and, well, life in general just kind of gets in the way sometimes. I’m sure the majority of y’all reading this can relate there. First off, a bit about the builder. As mentioned earlier, Matt Hurtado wears many hats. Not only does he have a day job as an Electrician (22 years strong) he is also the Owner and Operator of Working Man’s Customs. Working Man’s

Customs is predominately in the business of Leatherworking (Seats, belts, wallets, etc.). The second part of that business, however, is fabrication, everything from parts to total builds. And of course, the best hat of all is that of Father and Husband. The Salt Racer was inspired by two totally different builds. One was Hot-Doc custom’s “Parabellum Bulletâ€? and the other inspiration was Dan Webb’s re-creation of “The Golden Submarine.â€? Yeah, ok, so The Golden Submarine is a car, but hey, inspiration is inspiration, right? Though there were already two huge inspirations for this build, Matt was also drawn to the streamlined look of the cars DQG PRWRUF\FOHV RXW RQ WKH VDOW Ă DWV :LWK WKDW LQ PLQG WKH Ă€UVW WKLQJ KH GLG ZDV FDOO

Then it sat, and sat, for about two years! Smack in the middle of the shop, as if it were mocking him, taunting him daily. He just found himself too busy to get back to work on it. All he could do was stare at that would-be Salt Racer as he spent his days working on everyone else’s project but his own. Then the third year of the build rounded the corner which conveniently coincided with the second annual Handbuilt Show in Austin, TX. Matt decided to submit some photos of the partial build and lo-and-behold, not too much after submission he received the RIÀFLDO LQYLWH LQWR WKH +DQG %XLOW Show in the mail! Now all he needed was a completed bike! 7KLV ZDV WKH ÁDPH WKDW OLW D ÀUH under his ass so to speak. With a few calls to some very patient customers, asking to put their stuff on hold momentarily while he worked on his own build, he put his nose to the grindstone and got right to work. As most builds go, Matt ended up taking a lot of the parts of that he had originally fabricated for the bike and re-fabricated them to match the ideas he had come up with over time. I guess when something sits that long unattended to you have plenty of time to conceptualize new ideas. And plenty of them too! We knew the stance we wanted for this bike and that we wanted to incorporate some twisted elements into the frame so with a van full of stock, a rough drawing of the bike, Mark , Matt and I split for a two-day intensive. The guys at Led Sled are masters at frame building so we knew that they would be able to make short work out of what we had in mind. Joe started by setting up their frame jig to accommodate the basic variables of the frame we would be building. We would begin by twisting some steel stock in various patterns to see what we thought would be a good design for what we wanted to do. This is where the personality of the whole bike will come from so we wanted to make sure it had a good look, and one we would carry through.

While we started to cut lengths of the square stock, Joe set up the Led Sled frame jig. The neck is set to 40.5 degree rake and the axle plates are locked in.

Each of these sections were then twisted with an agreed upon pattern.

After a few quick measurements we decided on the length of our twisted frame components and Mark started to cut the stock.

Here are the few patterns we worked on. In the end we decided that the loose twist with an additional tight twist pattern was the best for this build.

A stick at a time Joe started to bend the 1.125 inch - .134 thickness tubing with a hydraulic bender.

And then he notched them accordingly RQ D 0LWWOHU 1RWFKHU IRU D QLFH WLJKW ÀW

Mark and Joe are shown here getting the inch and a half backbone in place. We had to build most of the frame the same as a conventional one would be built...

For the other sections of square stock, -RH SUHSDUHV WKH HQGV WR VOLS ÀW LQWR the round tubing. This would be the same as if it were standard slugs between two sections of round tubing.

We decided to cut out two sections of the upper frame rails on the rear section to incorporate twisted VWRFN 6DPH VOLS ÀW SURFHGXUH DV the downtubes.

Here, you can see a close up of the lower motor mounts bolted into the locators. Once the frame rails are in position they are welded to them.

Each one of the connections gets a butt weld and a rosette weld. The rosette weld starts with a 3/8 inch hole drilled through the outer material.

With the square stock ready Joe completes the bends on the lower frame rails and tacks them into place.

Then the twisted components are slipped into place to connect the round downtubes to the lower frame rails, and tacked in place as well.

This provides that the inner material can be welded to the round tubing, adding strength and insuring that it doesn’t rotate.

Joe continued to move around the frame performing tach welds until the frame was sturdy enough to come RXW RI WKH MLJ IRU ÀQLVK ZHOGLQJ CYCLE SOURCE January ‘17

A few years ago he was at Willie’s Tropical Tattoo Choppertime Bike Show standing next to Willie G and leaned in and made a comment. A couple of minutes later security was hustling Willie off the property. Security must have forgotten about it because I saw a picture with Roadside and Willie at this year’s Motorcycle as Art exhibit in Sturgis. Roadside got his nickname from a dalliance with a slim-hipped blueeyed raven haired biker chick on the side of the road. We’ll save the details for another time. All this work took countless hours over 2 and a half years. According to Brent, he thinks he probably put this bike together and took it apart and together about a half dozen times. But after many calls to Steven, Thomas and his Dad and a ton of reading and research the bike was ready for the Sturgis 75th; and roll it did. pulled the transmission’s top cover (four little bolts). A look inside revealed the obvious problem: one of the shifting forks had broken which allowed two gears to engage simultaneously. This action had busted the

GRJV RII WKH VLGH RI ÂżUVW JHDU²ZKLFK LV ZKDW HQJDJHV IRXUWK JHDU²DQG ELQJR IRXUWK QR more. Next, I pulled the shifting drum (four more little bolts) then pushed a magnet-ona-stick through the oil and to the bottom of the transmission’s insides. All broken gear pieces came out in big chunks. Having only limited experience with the inner workings of Harley Davidson transmissions, it looked as though I was about to get a crash course on this subject. The question was what to do next. The bike was still rideable and, in truth, had I known then what I know now I’d probably have just kept riding until a better opportunity for repair presented itself. But I didn’t know, so the search for a solution began. Asking around town, I’d learned that a mile back down the road from which we’d just come was a guy who worked on Harleys. Least that’s what I was told. His number was not listed and, in the thick greenery of this sparsely populated land, I had doubts that the guy even existed. Still, it

was the only option so back down the road ZH ZHQW ,W WRRN WZR SDVVHV WR ÂżQDOO\ VHH WKH sign. It had been hand painted onto a sheet of plywood and simply read, HARLEY SHOP. We turned in. The dirt driveway passed alongside a small creek as it led Âź mile through a little valley surrounded by hills and forest. At the stream’s far side I could see two buildings while farther up the hill a small house sat alone. One of the closer structures was a freestanding garage and I noted the motorcycles parked on its concrete driveway. A little wooden bridge soon crossed the creek and we pulled in. Inside the garage a bearded man sat on the Ă€RRU EHKLQG D ODWH PRGHO EDJJHU DV KH ZRUNHG on somebody’s old Sportster. I introduced myself. His name was Shovelhead Steve. But the guy seemed preoccupied, distant, maybe a little lost in his own world. Being in a bind, I began to explain the situation. Steve said he had none of the specialty tools required for serious transmission work. Although QR H[SHUW , NQHZ WKDW PRVW RI D ÂżYH VSHHG trannies can be disassembled without special tools. Steve obviously had his hands full with customer bikes and didn’t want to deal with this job, but couldn’t help seeing we were on the road and in some real trouble. I watched a slight warmth creep into his eye, that old biker mentality kicked in as he said, “I don’t really have time to deal with your tranny, but you can pull the thing apart here in the driveway if you like. You’re welcome to any tools I have.â€? After moving my FL to a spot just outside the shop door, I pulled the tool-bag and started the job. It had been well into the afternoon when we’d arrived and before long Steve’s work day was done. Cruising outside, he paused to QRWH P\ ZRUN²ZKLFK KDGQÂśW JRWWHQ WRR IDU because I’m an insufferably slow mechanic. We got to bullshitting and Steve brightened when he learned we were on the road full time. He also found it interesting that I’m a ZULWHU EHFDXVH VR LV KH²WKRXJK QHLWKHU RI us makes a living at it. I asked if we could make camp by the creek. Steve said, “Sureâ€?.

But when I asked about a shower to knock the grease from my body, Steve told me the water in his house was gravity fed from the stream and barley dribbled anyway. Whatever the reason, I didn’t think this guy was big on having visitors in his house. In fact, neither Michelle nor I would ever see the inside of that place. No problem, I was just happy to have use of a shop. Since it looked like we’d be here a while, Michelle and I picked the best spot by the stream and set up a semi-permanent camp. Next, I plopped into the creek and used about half a bar of soap. The night was quiet after that. The following day Steve and I took considerably more time getting to know each other. Being the only shop for many miles, this place had a surplus of motorcycles in for repair and Steve had himself under a lot of pressure to get these jobs done. It seemed to me that he was so overwhelmed with work, bills, and the making of personal security (money and such) that this guy spent his time doing little, or maybe nothing, else. He was stressed out, man. I also learned that Steve suffered from muscular dystrophy. As muscle-mass slowly deteriorated, this disease was sapping his strength and, although none of us gets much time on this planet, I wondered how many usable days were left for him. My bike had well over 400,000 miles on it now. At 337,000 the old Harley had suffered LWV ÂżUVW UHDO WUDQVPLVVLRQ SUREOHP ZKHQ one of the inner bearings had gone south. Although I’d pulled the clutch, exhaust pipes, etc., thus making it very easy to access the transmission’s innards, a shop had done the actual internal repairs. Their mechanic had shown me that when one bearing goes out, it spits bits of metal into the tranny which in turn takes out the other bearings as well. I was afraid that had happened again and therefore wanted to completely disassemble and replace, or at least inspect, all inner transmission bearings and their mating surfaces. Steve didn’t have the proper tools to pull the main drive gear, which meant that CYCLE SOURCE January ‘17

the bearings inside that sucker could not be inspected or replaced at his shop. I needed another plan. Years ago, the bike had suffered some other mechanical issue in Asheville North Carolina (100 miles south of Shovelhead Steve’s place) and I’d repaired it in the parking lot of a one-man shop called Mountain Cycle Works. The owner and I had been friends ever since and, whenever visiting that area, I always make camp in the yard of his home. Jody’s Asheville shop was easily equipped to handle heavy tranny work, so I called him. Jody said to bring it down. That done, the next order of business would be any needed new parts. I put in another call to a friend who makes most of his living selling Harley parts. Rather than send only what I needed, he insisted on shipping a complete Andrews gear set, brand new and still in the box. I gave him the address for Mountain Cycle Works. The next question was how to get that transmission to Asheville? I decided to pull the tranny, strap it to the back of Michelle’s bike, ride double-up to Asheville, rebuild the tranny, bring it back to Steve’s, install it, and ride away. Simple, right? By now Steve and I had put in plenty of hours on the bullshit wagon. More-so than I’d realized, his mind had begun to wonder beyond the bounds of this property line. So, when I talked of riding to Asheville, Steve spoke enthusiastically of coming along. There were old friends in Asheville he’d not seen for a long while because he’d not left the stress of this property for quite some time. We would leave in the morning. I’d grown accustomed to birdsong emanating from the impossibly green forest surrounding Steve’s property and today was no different as we readied the two motorcycles. I attached Betsy’s transmission to the rack of Michelle’s Honda while, oddly enough, Mr. Shovelhead Steve packed his twin cam bagger. I don’t actually know if he even had a Shovelhead. Anyway, the sky offered perfect weather as we set off into the mountains. Famous among motorcyclists for its twisting curves and forested beauty, The Dragon’s Tail also exists in these mountains. I’ve been there many times. Mostly, that place is renowned for its name and the little store that offers t-shirts and other overpriced bullshit to the crowds of motorcyclists that congregate in its parking lot. But in truth, the Dragon’s Tail’s not much better, if at all, than most any road in the Smoky/Appalachian Mountain range. In other words, for its entire duration this was a fantastically rich and beautiful ride. As the cobwebs blew from Steve’s brain, I watched the dull glaze leave his eyes. It seemed his sleeping spirit was again waking up. . .

Hey, What’s our next move? 45 Years ago, the safetycrats hit us with helmet laws. It was a notion not to save lives, but to control the growing number of wild bikers. Many folks just accepted that helmets protect heads. What could be better? We proved differently on many fronts and helmet laws still only cover half of our states. They are essentially wrong and freedom works (and helmets would work better in cars). We are in the center of another control freak rebellion. There is a chunk of society that believes all the wrong in the world is caused by human behavior and it must be controlled and stopped. This is so prevalent, Germany is considering banning all internal combustion engines by 2030 (as you will see in the news from NCOM). Folks in the motorcycle rights community know this scenario by heart. Although the administration did a FRPSHWHQW MRE RI FRQYLQFLQJ WKH VFLHQWLĂ€F community of this assertion, it’s a fallacy.
