Apple Mail is a great application. It can handle many different mail servers, it can organize ‘mailboxes’ to your liking and it even has some nifty smart features. But have you ever felt that Mail was lacking and could use a boost? Well the folks at MailButler have heard you and created some fantastic tools to take your Mail experience to new levels! While many people use Outlook or other third-party mail clients, Apple Mail has the advantage of being baked into the system and offers possibly the best syncing and convenience across your Mac and iOS devices. Why not add a little more muscle to take advantage of what Mail offers? MailButler is essentially your ‘personal assistant’ which offers multiple functions to streamline, simplify and optimize your use of Mail. Whether the majority is personal or particularly business use, MailButler will allow you to create beautiful, professional looking signatures using their templates. You can add photo images, text and colors to your liking and they are also mobile device friendly! Speaking of business users, Follow Up could be perhaps the most important tool MailButler offers. If you receive and send many, many emails daily the it is easy to lose one or more in the daily shuffle. How nice would it be to get notified when a message had not been read for a certain period of time? You can set up these reminders to keep tabs on just who has, and has not, ready or responded to your messages. Or how about Scheduling? You may want a

particular message to go out at a certain time, but you know you won’t be in front of your Mac then. Also, you can compose multiple messages and schedule them to go out at a particular date and time beforehand. Nice! Tracking is a fantastic way to know if your recipient has actually opened your message. This is an important business analytics tool as well as helping avoid redundant messages. Customer support is just one area that will find this extremely useful. MailButler also converts email messages into notes which includes file attachments, formatting, tags, date and other meta info. MailButler currently supports exporting directly to Evernote and OneNote. How’s this for something different? Snooze allows you to put messages ‘to sleep’. This essentially hides them from view in your inbox so you can focus on clearing out the top priority messages first. This is a hugely valuable tool for focusing on the most important thinsg first, then when the preset snooze timer is up, that hidden message, or messages, will reappear so you give them attention.

History

Apple’s 1998 rollout of the current HFS+ disk file system radically improved storage efficiencies, but rendered previous disk utilities obsolete. Using such utilities could make disks unrecoverable, and Apple’s Disk First Aid was relatively ineffectual. The then-leader in Mac disk repair, Symantec, dawdled on a compatible version, stranding Mac professionals until new tools arrived.

What to Expect

Apple has declared an official release for APFS of 2017. Most of its bugs should disappear by then, as well as some of its limitations. Expect Apple to release the appropriate software tools for the new format; startup disks should even allow migration in place.

If the rollout of APFS follows that of HFS+, plan to upgrade your favorite third-party disk utilities or adopt new ones. Apps Making Process Outputs More Predictable John Hennessy john.hennessy@lextech.com @howbecome

Companies spend significant time and resources to capture best practices and develop predictable processes. Since organizations are not static, they are constantly impacted by factors that contribute to different outcomes from what should be predictable processes and workflows.

• Training that doesn’t stick.

• High employee turnover.

• Changes in technology and processes.

• New regulations.

• Worker skill level and experience.

• Assumptions versus best practices.

Further, results can vary week to week, day to day, or employee to employee.

have the same level of skill and experience. By augmenting skill and experience with mobile devices and apps, you will achieve more predictable outcomes from every employee. Immediate Response. Data entered into a paper form or even a desktop takes time to get to someone who can take action. Any issues that arise from this delayed data won’t be detected until there has been a serious negative impact on output quality or quantity. Data from a mobile app is transmitted instantly. Thus a supervisor in a remote office can detect or be alerted to a systematic issue at a remote location. Immediate corrective action can then be taken to maintain quality or output levels. If you identify a business process with more variability than it should have, think about how a mobile device and supporting app can help make that process more predictable.

Mobile Devices and Apps – The Output Equalizer

Supporting a workflow with iPhones, iPads and the right mobile apps will help your business achieve more predictable outcomes. Workflows that haven’t been predictable can have their output consistency improved dramatically. More predictable results mean businesses can more reliably forecast and schedule activities that were once close to random in their output quality or quantity. Beyond the savings from efficiency, there are other benefits. • Customers will choose to use a business that offers a service of consistent high quality delivered when promised. • Investors don’t like surprises. A company that gains control of processes will gain the trust of investors. • The best employees are attracted to and stay at well run companies.

More Predictable Outputs

There are three primary areas where mobilizing processes leads to more predictable outputs:

Point of Impact. Mobile devices and apps can be right where the employee and process meet. This is where the questions arise and decisions are made that lead to changes in output quantity, quality or both. When training is long forgotten or the boss is at lunch, a mobile device and app will continue monitoring, supervising and guiding. This mobile support helps employees make decisions that contribute to reliable output levels. Distributed Expertise. It makes no economic sense to staff every post with an expert. With mobile, you can put expertise everywhere. A mobile device and app can connect a junior employee with a problem to a more senior employee who has the experience to make the problem go away. The mobile device can present the issue through voice, notes, images and even real-time video. The remote expert can recommend a solution based on the data gathered and distributed through the mobile device. The expert can use the same mobile device to get instant feedback on the result of implementing the recommendation. Not every employee will

In these perilous times, we need leadership in all spheres of our life – Government, Business, Politics, and going right down to families. General Norman Schwarzkopf, said that it is a combination of strategy and character. Foundational for success and impact is character. What kind of a model and example are we? Are we doers or just talkers? Are we givers or just takers? Are we people who take responsibility or blame others? It is not perfection or great abilities and skill. It is being authentic and knowing your weak areas that lead to being open, honest and vulnerable so that one can draw upon the strengths of others to achieve and meet organizational goals.

Now, let’s move into the business arena and can look at some specifics. Attitude, vision and values are vital for profit, growth and survival. Where do we want to be in the next 6 – 10 years? What are changing demographics? Where is my revenue coming from? Where is my profit coming from? Consider macro trends. Look at technology, the internet of things, social media targets. What is our value proposition? What about market segmentation? Are all my eggs in one basket or do I have a variety of market segments in case of changing markets? Am I invested in reaching millennials that are the markets of tomorrow or am I stuck in known and traditional markets? What are my resource needs? Training needs? How about succession planning for key positions?

Some other qualities might include being faithful and loyal to the big picture. Take a step back to see how you work with people. Are you someone who can motivate and train teams for success and growth? Or are YOU the only person you can trust and you end up controlling without delegating and doing it ALL yourself. Effective leadership is putting others ahead of you to achieve a goal greater than yourself. Jesus provided the model for servant leadership (Mark 10:35–45). Vast digital resources are available to learn about various conditions, treatments, physician expertise, ratings, hospital offerings, upcoming appointments, and more. As a result, the intent, goals, quality, and overall value of healthcare has been redirected back to the core needs of the industry’s consumer: patients. In effect, the power has shifted hands. None of these technologies, however, can replace the in-person experience of actually being told by a doctor what a patient is experiencing and what the options are moving forward. Yet, a very real and burdensome communication gap persists between what physicians explain and what patients understand. This gap is made wider when one considers the outdated tools used to educate patients on highly complex and fearful medical conditions: plastic anatomical models, faded pathology posters taped on a wall, a poorly drawn picture of one’s injury on the back of an envelope, and leaflet brochure that closely resembles a high school anatomy textbook. Far too often, the end result is more confusion, less comprehension and heightened fear. Subsequently, patients are left to fend for themselves and seek multiple alternative opinions or no treatment at all. Considering how many incredible technological advances Consumers enjoy at their fingertips, why must patients settle for this ineffective and counterproductive Patient Experience? 3D4Medical addressed this problem head-on by creating Complete Ortho, a digital platform where physicians empower their patients to make thoughtful, thorough and appropriate choices for their healthcare.

Three Ways to Innovate like an Olympian at the Office Mario Moussa Derek Newberry @derekonewberry

Media coverage of the current Olympics has featured awe-inspiring performances by top athletes like Simone Biles and Michael Phelps. It has also given credit to the many coaches and teammates who, laboring tirelessly behind the cameras, have helped these extraordinary individuals reach the pinnacle of their sports. But there is another story that should be getting as much attention – and, in practical terms, it has the most relevance to your daily exploits at the office. This story is about innovation. Olympians, innovation, and you . . . really? Absolutely. Without innovation, Simone Biles would not be executing maneuvers that no other competitor, male or female, can even contemplate. And Michael Phelps would not be leaving Rio with a career 23 gold medals, a record of dominance that makes him the most decorated gold medalist in Olympic history. That’s ancient history, by the way, the previous record-holder -- Leonides of Rhodes -- having lived over 2000 years ago,. Even if your athletic career involves nothing more than watching on the couch as the best of the best compete live from Rio, their successes suggest powerful ways to achieve creative break-throughs in your own performance.

Others played a role in the development of the dolphin kick, including the physicist Volney Wilson, who was a swimming enthusiast as well as a contributor to the WWII project that produced the first atomic bomb. More recently, a Johns Hopkins professor of Mechanical Engineering has taken an interest in analyzing the stroke and lends his technical support to the U.S. swim team. TV viewers only see the athletes striving for greatness for two intense weeks, but all of this history and behind-thescenes activity is actually a bigger part of the story.

3. Dream, and then work like crazy. Daniel James Brown, in his beautiful book, The Boys in the Boat: Nine Americans and Their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, recounts a scene in which the University of Washington coach conceives of the audacious goal of defeating the top U.S. rowing teams and pulling all the way through to the 1936 Olympic Gold Medal in Munich. Unsurprisingly, years of all-consuming toil separated that inspiring reverie on the banks of Lake Washington and the historic moment the Americans became world champions under Hitler’s baleful gaze. But the excitement of victory often eclipses all of the By following a few Olympic-level innovation principles, you effort that led to it. Such dominance has its roots in the training regimen developed by the U.S. women’s national team coordinator, Martha Karolyi. Earlier and less successful gymnastics “teams” were really just collections of individuals. Karolyi manages to inspire both individual achievement and a strong commitment to the group. One reinforces the other. “We were expected to compete as a team overseas [but] you’re still an individual,” says Rhonda Faehn, senior vice president of the women’s team and a former gymnast. At a young age, Biles started honing her individual skills at Karolyi’s remote ranch, where athletes bunk and train together and spotty cell-phone service helps minimize intrusions that distract from developing relationships with teammates. Coming this Fall. 2. Build on the innovation that others have already discovered. Michael Phelps embodies a unique blend of physical endowments, exquisite technique, and determination. Less obvious is the decades of innovation that prepared the way for his dominance. Take his mastery of the underwater dolphin kick that has so often propelled him to the medalists’ podium. Phelps has benefited from innovations that go back at least to David Armbruster, who from 1917 to 1958 coached the University of Iowa swim team. According to the International Swimming Hall of Fame, Armbruster first saw a demonstration of the technique in 1911 and

Marc Madnick had a problem. He moved to Hollywood to be a screenwriter but quickly found that the process of writing a script was daunting, not due to a lack of ideas but due to a lack of tools. Take a quick look around your office. Assuming you are not a Law or Accounting firm, do you have an in-house Lawyer or Accountant? I expect that for most small and medium sized businesses the answer to this question is no. These functions are important to proper operation of your business and require the skills of highly trained experts. It is an unlikely case that your graphic designer will called upon to write legal contracts or your sales person is moonlighting as an accountant. You recognize the importance of this of work and the continued success of your business depends on it, so you go to outside firms with the resources to effectively meet your needs.

While it may seem tempting to rely on your current staff as you grow, or to consider hiring an in-house technician, effective support is best delivered by a team of up to date, fully qualified specialists. In-house technical staff bring forth numerous human resource and other concerns including professional development, knowledge gaps and even vacation coverage. One reason often heard in companies considering the an-house route is that unlike legal opinions or year-end returns, IT infrastructure needs regular proactive support, preventative maintenance and care. While the foundation of this statement is solid, the truth is that in most cases necessary building blocks like incident tracking, system maintenance and monitoring tools are just too expensive or comLook around the office again. How do you ensure that all your systems meet the performance and workflow needs for continued success? Are your staff crawling under desks trying to firefight network problems? Is your receptionist collecting tapes or taking hard drives full of confidential data home so that you have an off-site backup? Are you logging into the server to change passwords when people forget them? Do you count on a guy who knows a guy for advice on business continuity planning or how to prevent a data breech? If any of the above rings familiar, ask yourself why valuable resources are being tied up dealing with IT issues instead of servicing customers or growing your business? Is there truly value in putting continued success or growth at risk by sticking with the status quo? It may feel that supporting yourself makes financial sense, but would resources not be better spent completing projects, closing new business, hitting the golf course for 9 holes, or even better, getting home in time for dinner with family? How much more productive might your Office Admin, Graphic Designer or other valuable staff be if they did not need to spend time dealing with IT problems and systems simply worked as expected? For many businesses, IT problems are often predicated by success, which is not a bad thing by any means. Rapid growth and expansion, however, often overwhelm systems that were not designed to expand or intended to support new tools and processes. The lack of a forward-looking IT plan, ad-hoc purchasing and best effort support can quickly turn what began as clean, reliable infrastructure into a patchwork quilt of hard to manage pieces inhibiting growth and putting your business at risk.

Being Real Brings Real Results Michael Muhney viporbit.com @MikeMuhney

We all want to put our best foot forward. So much so that sometimes we put more of an emphasis on creating an image of ourselves than being ourselves. We all want to be perceived as intelligent, invincible, and insightful, especially to those whom we’ve just met or would like to meet. This is of the utmost importance as an entrepreneur trying to build a brand.

The reason that I identified Clarence as the super hero I wanted most to be like was that he helped George Bailey see his value and the impact he made on all those around him. It wasn’t about my wanting to “pretend” I could leaptall-buildings-in-a-single-bound or fight crime and injustice. Instead, I identified with a character who had the capability of genuinely touching other people’s hearts, encouraging them to see their own value, and understanding how others see them, too. It was an opportunity to reveal who I am and where my heart is. Plus, it also enabled me to display some of my own playfulness and lightheartedness. It was a small risk to pick an angel wanting to earn his wings by helping someone else as opposed to the predictable selections of the action-figure crowd. But risk-taking can both move us forward and set us apart, and in this case it paid off. What I wasn’t prepared for, though, was the response I got from the host of the radio program. If anything, I assumed that he’d be surprised by my answer and nothing more would come of it. Was I ever wrong! Keep in mind, I wasn’t trying to be clever as much as I was wanting to be who I am and go with my gut, and if it was

Continued from page 17 One industry that has seen a boom in social media and content marketing is healthcare. The traditional means of healthcare providers connecting with patients is simply no longer effective. And as government and state agencies continue to push healthcare in a tech direction, doctors, specialists, and institutions have no choice but to meet the growing demand. Social media marketing has already made a big impact on how healthcare providers, both public and private, reach patients. John’s Hopkins University has a Twitter following of over 55,000. And Stanford School of Medicine has nearly 80,000 likes on their Facebook page. Social media marketing in itself is too powerful too ignore, especially if you are new to the healthcare market. Couple that with “target” content marketing which is focused on bringing a company’s brand to life would be a lethal “target marketing” combination – eg., for Wahoo Fitness, it was the realization that they were in a position to offer actionable advice to potential consumers, and hence created proper “content marketing” to help them get better in activities and sports they like. And since cyclists and runners would most probably share this content, they went for short and easy-to-share snippets to outline their particular.

One of the most influential healthcare Twitter accounts to follow is the American Medical Association. They have more than a half million followers, and their tweets are for medical professionals and patients alike. Patients can even reach out to influential medical professionals via Twitter. Oncologists like Dr. Steven Eisenberg use social media marketing to connect with cancer patients and their families, offering news and updates for cancer treatment. Patients also enjoy having access to doctors from the comfort of their own home. Online second opinion platforms are beginning to gain popularity among patients. Second opinion sites like YourDoctors.Online have experienced a 2.5 percent growth in registrations since boosting their social media marketing efforts. I reviewed the Clamcase for iPad Air in a previous issue of iBusiness Magazine. I have since upgraded to the 9.7” iPad Pro, and upgraded my Clamcase keyboard case with it. Since that upgrade several months ago, the Clamcase for iPad Pro has evolved yet again.

closure attaches to the keyboard by a strong hinge with a 360 degree range of motion for infinite viewing angles. The top row of the keyboard provides iPad screen control, document edit, keyboard control, volume control keys and a microphone toggle.

First of all, do I consider the addition of auxiliary internal power and additional features a revolutionary upgrade? No. A revolutionary upgrade would be the inclusion of a trackpad. Apple will not enable the Bluetooth stack to accommodate a trackpad because the iPad touch-enabled display with the ability to use any human interface device (Apple’s own or third party) would further cannibalize its laptops. Mac users may even upgrade their laptops less frequently the more the line between the Mac and the iPad blurs.

The iPad easily snaps in and out of the enclosure, which offers a soft liner to protect the back of the iPad from scratches. The enclosure is strong and the time or two I dropped my iPad, I found it offered good protection. The iPad wakes and sleeps automatically and the Clamcase + Power pairs automatically with the iPad after the initial Bluetooth pairing. My Clamcase Pro occasionally dropped its connection but I have not noticed it on the iPad + Power.

Battery life on Clamcase products has always been respectable but engaging the keyboard backlighting will reduce the advertised battery life from 1000 hours of uninterrupted use with backlighting off, to 120 hours with backlighting on. I have not have my unit long enough to verify these specs or the 2 months of standby time. The ClamCase + Power has to be charged more frequently, but keeping my ClamCase Pro as a back up for the three hour charge time is very helpful. I use my iPad in its keyboard case about 60% of my day because. The iPad Pro is far more capable than my old iPad Air and the Let’s take a look at the new features: Clamcase keyboard cases enhance its utility to the point that 1) Backlighting: This is a feature I missed on the Clamcase I often forget I’m using an iPad instead of a laptop. The ClamCase + Power Is available for the iPad Pro (9.7”) and iPad Air 2. It retains all the features of the Clamcase Pro for iPad Air in the same sized chassis which is, by necessity .3 pound heavier. It also better and more sustained Bluetooth connectivity. The idea of being able to leave my nearly 2 pound Dell external battery at my desk was the main reason I opted to upgrade my Clamcase Pro. Granted, that battery pack is my favorite mobile accessory, capable of simultaneously charging my PC, iPad and iPhone without so much as a hiccup. Instead of traveling light, I was once again taking a heavy battery pack and a full complement of cables. Now I am able to travel light again, with just the single USB cable for added power and maybe an AC adapter and extra 3 foot cable as a back up but I always carry these two items anyway. The addition of a 6000 mAh lithium ion battery bank by necessity adds .3 pounds to the weight of the Clamcase + Power and retains the same dimensions. It’s nothing near the weight of my Dell battery pack which now lives permanently plugged in at my desk to charge my mobile devices on demand (iPhone, Fitbit). Just like its predecessor, the Clamcase + Power includes a comfortable island keyboard. The chiclet keys offer respectable travel replicating a laptop. The polycarbonate iPad en-
