Hello readers, Welcome to the September edition of “The Big W” In this months guide, we have slightly changed the layout of the guide to include our new “Services & Classifieds Ads section” This is a great addition to the guide as it gives you, the readers, a chance to also take part in our guide and advertise any items you may wish to sell or buy for free. Plus all the services are listed in alphabetical order, making them easier to find. To help with the credit crunch, we have also added an “Items to give away section” We think this is a great idea as not everyone wants to sell items but would rather give them away in a more charitable manner. All you have to do is place an ad for free and wait for someone to phone you to pick the item up, So keep your eyes peeled for those freebies! Thanks again to all for your support. Thank you, The Editors, Natalia Corbella & Kevin Norris

THIS MONTHS “FAMILY DAY OUT” Every month we will be giving you a more detailed description from one of the listed “Family Days Out” section. We love to hear from our readers, if you have visited one of these parks we would like to hear from you and will include your letter in one of our future editions. Please email: thebigw@121direct.co.uk tel. (07982) 869692 www.whatsonkent.co.uk

This month we are looking at

Howletts wild animal park~ Canterbury Howletts is set in 90 acres of beautiful ancient parkland The park, formerly known as Howletts Zoo, was set up as a private zoo in 1957 by the late John Aspinall with the aim of protecting and breeding rare and endangered species and returning them to safe areas in their native homeland. The animal collection was opened to the public in 1975. There are surprises around every corner on the journey of discovery including close encounters at the glass fronted tiger enclosures, gorillas, clouded leopards, monkeys, tapirs, Iberian wolves, macaques, rhinos and many other rare and endangered species from around the world. There is also a Black Rhino breeding sanctuary, the UK's largest herd of African elephants and Walking With Lemurs. Restaurant and picnic areas are open all year, there are also gift shops, an adventure playground for the children next to the picnic area which is really handy, keeper talks in peak periods and education centres. All in all a fantastic day out for all the family. Please see their website for entrance fees and special events.

KENT COASTLINE In every edition we will be looking at one of the coastal towns along the Kent coastline, this month we are focusing on;

Whitstable Whitstable is a seaside town in the northeast of Kent and southeast of England appreciated by many for its architecture and stunning sunsets. It is part of the City of Canterbury with a population of about 30,000. Known as the "Pearl of Kent", Whitstable is famous for its oysters, these freshly caught shellfish are available throughout the year at several seafood restaurants and pubs in the town. They have been collected in the area since at least Roman times. Its maritime heritage is celebrated every year with the Oyster Festival. During this festival, there are market stalls, delicious food to sample, live music and, of course, the lovely harbour. Whitstable's distinctive character is popular with tourists. The harbour still plays an important role in the town's economy There are plenty of independent shops to visit, each one has a character of its own. Whitstable is a beautiful seaside town, we visit Whitstable regularly and we love it, I am sure you will too.
