SUMMER 2019
A LEARNING D E S T I N AT I O N W H E RE E N E RGY, D ISCOVE RY, A ND CREAT IVIT Y F LO URIS H SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, CALIFORNIA
Dear Friends of 1440, This summer marks the second anniversary of our opening. As we reflect on the past two years, we appreciate each and every one of the more than 45,000 people who have visited our learning destination. This January, CNN named 1440 one of the 11 Best Wellness Retreats in the World for 2019, and we share our deep gratitude to those of you who—through your presence and support—helped us receive this wonderful honor. Each day, we look forward to connecting with our guests, faculty, and friends as we welcome people of different generations, cultures, stages of life, and interests. The energy of the campus is palpable and seems to multiply with every gathering. 1440 Multiversity is a place where we imagine ways to turn that energy into a community of discovery and creativity, as well as compassionate connection, recognizing that each of us holds fast to dreams and comes up against challenges. We love to hear the stories about why people came, and often why they come back. Time and again, we hear that in this tranquil setting it’s easy to put aside life’s usual demands. That unanswered craving for time to take forest walks, to slow down and reflect, and to connect in real conversations that matter is often found here among the redwoods and around the fire pits in the good company of others, each on their own journey. With this time set aside for introspection and meaningful dialogue, we all go home feeling reconnected to what truly matters in our lives. So in this catalog, in addition to in-depth interviews, profiles of our signature classes, and listings of weekend and 5-day programs with expert faculty, we are celebrating some of our guests and their experiences with us. Many make new forever-friends, others connect more deeply with those they came with, and all experience a renewed sense of wonder at life’s possibilities. Poet and philosopher Mark Nepo, who will be teaching here in June, has said, “The humility of wonder opens everything.” We invite you to come and experience what will open up for you. Warmly,
Joanie, Scott and the 1440 Family
Facing Page: Day and night, fire pits across campus are favorite spots for impromptu gatherings.

Wisdom Begins in Wonder Joseph Campbell is known for taking the story of the hero’s journey out of the realm of religion and mythology to illuminate the path of transformation in our modern lives. The journey describes the strong pull we feel to take a leap into the unknown to experience something new. He illustrates the process of following that call, receiving unexpected and miraculous guidance or mentorship, making it through the challenges, and ending up still ourselves, yet also transformed, able to make an even greater, positive impact on our most intimate relationships, our community, and our work in the world. At 1440 Multiversity, the invitation to participate is extended to all, unbounded by the range of human differences. Here, away from other demands on your time, relax into a sense of wonder among the ancient redwoods and create opportunity for wisdom to arise. Maybe you’ll hear just what you need in a program or 1440 signature class, you’ll have a spark of insight during your conversations with newfound friends, or clarity will come to you during an introspective walk on the trails. Stepping outside of your usual routine, you can spend time listening to the call in programs we offer with world-renowned faculty in the fields of Personal Growth, Health & Wellness, and Professional Development. Browse our summer weekend and 5-day programs on pages 38 – 75, then book your time here to learn, connect with others, and rejuvenate your body, mind, and spirit.
Essentially, mythologies are enormous poems that are renditions of insights, giving some sense of the marvel, the miracle and wonder of life. Joseph Campbell

Become a True North Leader at 1440 by Bill George
As I wrote in my book, Discover Your True North, your True North is the essence of who you are—your most deeply held beliefs, values, and principles you lead and live by. Discovering your True North requires deep introspection of your life story, the times you have lost your way, and your most challenging crucibles in order to gain the self-awareness of what is most important in your life and the causes you want to devote yourself to. Only then will you be prepared to lead other people, because the hardest person you will ever have to lead is yourself. When you have discovered your True North, you are ready to discern the purpose of your leadership—your North Star. When you do so, people will naturally gravitate to you and your leadership, and join you in striving for that clear sense of purpose. As you lead teams with purpose and values, you will find that you can have much greater impact through your leadership. Are you eager to take the next step in your leadership so you can have greater impact? Or are you stuck in a role that lacks real meaning for you? Do you want more fulfillment from your life? Are you ready to explore how to get it? The world is crying out for more authentic, trustworthy, and inspiring people to follow. Are you that kind of leader? If so, then 1440 Multiversity’s True North Leadership program is right for you. 1440 Multiversity cofounder Scott Kriens and I have created a 5-day program designed for you and other leaders like you to discover your True North and become a True North leader. In True North Leadership you will be able to discern the purpose of your leadership and ascertain how you can make a unique difference in the world. In addition to Scott and myself, the faculty includes leadership expert retired Brigadier General Dana H. Born from Harvard Kennedy School, human potential guru and Lucenscia CEO Michelle Maldonado, and George Family Foundation president Gayle Ober. Last October marked the inaugural program of True North Leadership for 63 dedicated participant leaders from a wide range of organizations—nonprofits, foundations, healthcare, education,

small and large businesses, government, media, and even a dedicated professional firefighter. Several of the participants came from outside the United States. Based on participant feedback, the program was a huge success. Many of the participants continue to meet regularly with their small groups of six leaders that are an integral part of the program. The next True North Leadership program will be held Sunday, October 13, through Friday, October 18, at 1440 Multiversity. We invite you to register and bring a colleague with you to participate as well. The unique setting of 1440 Multiversity makes all the difference in this program as it engages your mind, body, and spirit in building a sense of community shaped with other participants. The program is designed to activate not just your brain but all your senses in the beauty of the setting. Classes are held twice per day inside a large classroom and also outside in the Redwood amphitheater and forest Cathedral. Each class begins with a short mindfulness meditation designed to ground everyone and enable them to set an intention for the class. Most of the classes use the case study method as a basis for discussing issues important to participants about their leadership. All participants are assigned to True North groups of five people plus a facilitator. The groups meet twice daily following each class, mostly outdoors. These sessions provide opportunities to discuss personal leadership issues in an intimate, confidential setting—and are rated as the highlight of the program. Early each morning there are movement classes featuring yoga, Pilates, tai chi, and more. In the late afternoons and evenings there are nature walks, healthy eating classes, meditation sessions, additional speakers, programs, and opportunities to use the amazing Healing Arts spa and Fitness Center on the property. The healthy food served in 1440 Multiversity’s Kitchen Table provides three fabulous meals daily. All participants are housed on campus in accommodations of their choice, ranging from economical Asian-style pods with eight to a room to double rooms and even luxurious private suites. One of the great strengths of this program is the diversity of the participants—the vast array of life experiences, backgrounds, and professional fields represented—that enables us to learn from each other. It is through mutual sharing that we grow to become better leaders and gain the ability to tackle greater challenges. 1440 Multiversity’s True North Leadership program invites you to join us for this unique opportunity to take your leadership to the next level as you discover your True North. 2:00 pm Arrival
7:00 am Signature Class: Yoga
I can’t believe such a serene place exists close to San Jose and Santa Cruz. Once I turned onto Bethany Drive, the view of the campus opened up, and in that moment it was like a different world—a picturesque hideaway.
Tricia guided us. Her encouraging, enthusiastic tone was focused on the breath with each movement. After the meditation the night before and Tricia’s class, I now know how important breathing is! In 12 hours, the extra focus on my breath has made a big difference in my energy.
2:30 pm Common Grounds Café I came to campus with a sore throat and ordered hot turmeric milk in the café. It was soothing, and soon after drinking it outside in the fresh air, I felt restored and healthier. 4:00 pm Settling Into the Room The view from the balcony overlooking the redwoods was breathtaking. The buildings were understated and upscale, yet blended so well into the rustic surroundings. I felt a great deal of thought was placed in both the architecture and design to enrich each space. 5:00 pm Signature Class: Meditation I have tried meditation in the past, but today was the first time I felt something in me shift. I realized, “OK, I need to do this more regularly.” Wendy, our class instructor, was compassionate and giving of her time. She stayed after class, allowing us to ask questions and share more about our experience together. 6:30 pm Dinner at Kitchen Table The food was so colorful, and the friendly staff composed each dish in front of me. I could tell everything was fresh and organic. I had the mushroom risotto, a nourishing comfort food, and the vegetable soup with stewed pork was full of flavor. With so much to choose from, I couldn’t try everything I wanted to. 7:30 pm Healing Arts My friend and I each had a very relaxing massage then met in the steam room. It was the perfect way to connect, talk, and laugh together. We were too relaxed to go into the infinity-edge hot tub, but we took photos of the beautiful view overlooking the redwoods.
8:30 am Breakfast at Kitchen Table Usually I don’t eat a big breakfast, but I was hungry as we really used our muscles in yoga. I had gluten-free waffles with cinnamon apples; scrambled eggs with kale, sweet potato, and charred broccoli; and yogurt with homemade granola. Like dinner the night before, breakfast was hearty, flavorful, and wholesome. 10:00 am Walking the Trails The trails were wide enough for my friend and I to walk next to each other. Being outside, breathing the fresh air, we talked about things we wouldn’t usually talk about if we were indoors. We touched on emotional topics that poured out of us. The surroundings opened our hearts. 12:30 pm Lunch at Kitchen Table During lunch at a large community table, someone we met in one of the signature classes reflected on the trip with us. To me, it felt like a national park—the trails have a very special energy. Departure: Looking forward to returning The place made me slow down, reflect, and relax. There are lots of things going on in my life. Being here helped me put it all aside and prioritize this time for myself. I look forward to another Rest & Renewal stay for more time to sit among the trees and read, or bring my book club so we can all enjoy 1440 together.
The surroundings opened our hearts. Sharmila

What Groups Experience at 1440 “1440 let us feel as though we were suspended from all of our other responsibilities. Working in such a surreal and tranquil setting with that gorgeous food, surrounded by beautiful nature, was so restorative. At the same time, working in state-of-the-art facilities allowed us to focus on the training we were there to do. One of my favorite memories was when the students in our training were given a few hours to practice their presentations together and our executive director and I spotted them gathering by fire pits, at the foot of redwood trees, walking along the paths together ... what kind of facility allows everyone to immerse themselves with the training content and each other in that kind of environment? We felt nourished at every turn. The staff went above and beyond and always seemed to figure out a way to say ‘yes!’ As a result, we spent our energy connecting with each other, deepening our commitment to our work, and being very present."
“We were looking for a space for our executive leaders that provided them a place to connect mind, body, and spirit. 1440 Multiversity is that kind of place and more. Our executives’ work is characterized by hard-line business decisions as well as caring for the whole person. 1440 Multiversity offers us the space for deep reflection and a place to connect our head, heart, and hands into one cohesive self.”

Founder Enneagram Prison Project
“I was really touched by the caring staff and the way everything was immaculately maintained from the food to the flower beds to the infinity-edge hot tub to the redwood trails. I felt so at home here, reinvigorated and reenergized, even though I flew here from the UK. Thank you!”

1440:
You are best known for capturing raw emotion and experience in distilled images that blend text and artistry. How did you evolve this style of selfexpression?
1440:
Your work frequently portrays what it feels like to wrestle with some tough, persistent sensations such as anxiety, attachment, and longing. Have you made friends with those emotions through the process?
Mari:
Like most creative people, I've always been drawn to many forms of self-expression, from dance, to drama, to writing, and music. If I had any vocal talent whatsoever, I'd love to be a singer-songwriter. It was hard for me as a younger person to figure out which creative "lane" to pick, but I ultimately chose writing because it came so naturally to me. I was constantly writing letters, poems, plays, and essays.
Mari:
Yes absolutely, but I think I was fortunate to not ever see these as necessarily negative feelings. Maybe because I read a lot as a child, I always saw sadness and regret and pain as part of a great story.
Emotion, feeling, and memory are the easiest things for me to write about. I habitually and instinctively mythologize everything that happens to me—probably from years of journaling— and I write a lot of personal essays, which don't feel too different from what you see in my illustrations. N U TR I TI ON
I think the incorporation of art stems from a somewhat gluttonous desire to express myself in more ways than one. Combining text with watercolor splashes and little illustrations is a fun way for me to blend multiple interests (art and writing) in a quick burst of expression. the Healthy-Aging Tools
Optimal Health Within Reach: Learn of Integrative Medicine
I've never turned off a movie for being "too depressing" or put a book down because it made me cry. I feel most alive when I'm experiencing either pain or joy, so I see pain as sort of a trade-off, the necessary twin to joy. I do think that creating art that meditates on these difficult emotions can certainly help with feeling more comfortable within them. When you make something beautiful from something that's hard, you're giving it a special place in your life. I'm grateful for all the challenges I've gone through, not just because they fuel my creativity, but because they've revealed more of myself to myself. In this way, they have helped me connect more deeply and compassionately to the human experience. I relearn this every time I publish a piece of art about some tough emotion.
I wouldn't have been 100% satisfied with just writing,

1440:
What does it feel like to expose your vulnerability to an Instagram following of 1 million people?
Mari:
I'm very grateful I get to do it! I think the dream for any expressive person is to have an audience who actually cares what you have to say. That's a tremendously empowering and humbling experience. Even though I post about very raw emotions, that's not something I feel ashamed about. Now, if I were posting photos of the very unattractive meals I make for myself, or all the embarrassing things I've said on dates, or what's underneath my bed, that would be pretty nerve-racking. But I know by now that we're all experiencing the same emotions (just perhaps at different times and with different specifics), so it's not scary or even very vulnerable for me to post my feelings on the internet. We all have them! It's part of the deal of being a human. I feel very fortunate that I'm able to make them into art that helps me connect to other people; it's a big gift.

1440:
Do you struggle with giving yourself permission to feel what you feel? What emotions are toughest for you to allow, and to capture in your work?
Mari:
I've never really resonated with the message, "It's okay to be sad” as though I have to give myself permission to let down. I've always felt like “Of coooouurse it is totally okay to be sad!” I strongly and naturally feel like it's okay to have any emotion, though I have a harder time sitting with certain ones. I'm still working on allowing myself space to be angry, which has been a lifelong challenge, because it feels so negative and unproductive. But I'm sure the same could be said of sadness, which I feel very comfortable with. Occasionally I'll let anger seep through my work, and it's always a really triumphant experience—being able to articulate something that's so uncomfortable for me. I hope this is one way I'll evolve through the years as an artist and a writer.
1440:
How do you define creativity?
Mari:
I have a very spiritual definition of creativity. For me it really feels like creativity is the interaction between me and anything nonphysical, anything in the spiritual realm. Sometimes that feels like God, sometimes it feels like a spark of humanity, sometimes it feels like interaction with a different time. Creativity takes me out of the moment and into another time. It's hard to explain, as most beautiful experiences are. When I'm creating, I feel like I'm doing something very uniquely human—something humans have been doing forever. It makes me feel very connected. I really hope this is something that everyone can experience in one way or another, because it's glorious!
1440:
What and who are some of the guides and touchpoints that you rely on in your creative evolution?
Mari:
Ah, there are so many artists whose work says: You can do this too. These are people who created their own style and sent their own type of message from their own lives. They weren't trying to speak for everyone; they were just telling their stories in some unusual, intriguing medium that hadn't quite been done before. Some names that come to mind: Cheryl Strayed, Maira Kalman, Timothy Goodman, Sabrina Ward Harrison, Sufjan Stevens, Josh Ritter, Sherman Alexie, and Martha Graham. As for experiences that I regularly rely on, I continually seek out travel (change of scenery in general) and lessons from pain. I don't seek out the experience of pain, and I don't think pain is necessary for an artist to make good work. However, I continually try to learn from the pain that has come my way because its lessons are infinite. I seek out travel for joy and perspective. It seems both pain and adventure offer greater texture and fullness to life, which makes them essential to my creative work. What We Can Do About Dying While We're Living: An Interview with Frank Ostaseski Frank Ostaseski, an internationally respected Buddhist teacher and pioneer in end-of-life care, has accompanied over 1,000 people through their dying process. Acclaimed author of The Five Invitations, Frank cofounded the first Buddhist hospice in America—the Zen Hospice Project. In 2005, he founded the Metta Institute®, through which he has trained countless clinicians and caregivers, building a national network of educators, advocates, and guides for those facing life-threatening illness.

Radical Compassion, Courage, and Connection: What Can Death Teach Us? August 2 – 4, 2019 Tuition $375 plus two nights
1440:
Frank Ostaseski's Five Invitations
Frank:
The Five Invitations are mutually supportive principles, permeated with love that are reliable guides for being with dying. And, as it turns out, they have a relevance for all of us in living a life of integrity, meaning, and purpose.
1. Don’t Wait 2. Welcome Everything, Push Away Nothing 3. Bring Your Whole Self to the Experience 4. Find a Place of Rest in the Middle of Things 5. Cultivate Don’t Know Mind
1440:
Fear seems to be the most common reaction to death. What is it that we’re afraid of, exactly?
Frank:
People have three big fears when it comes to dying. The first is that it will hurt. These days we can do something about that—we can manage people's pain fairly well, and we can generally address symptoms fairly effectively. The second fear is something like, “I'm going to be emotionally abandoned because there's no future relationship with me.” That is a big fear. We can do something about this one too—we can say, “I'm here.” We can be compassionate companions and keep our commitments. The third fear is of something that’s a little more difficult. Dying, particularly dying from a long-term illness, is a stripping away process. We are stripped of all the ways we've self-defined—as a mother, a father, a journalist, whatever. All these identities go away and we’re left with the question, “Who am I?” That’s when we get down to something that's much more fundamental or essential. It's terrifying and also liberating.
1440:
When we are stripped down to that essential level, what do you see? Are we all the same or is there still a uniqueness to each of us?
Frank:
It’s completely unique. Just like every birth is unique, every death is that way too. That doesn’t mean there aren’t commonalities among people, though. I worked with a lot of folks who lived on the streets of San Francisco, and most of them didn't have deep religious practices. They also didn't have a lot of trust in society. But I regularly saw them go through a very powerful transformational process in dying. Let's say it this way: in the dying process, people often discover that there's something larger than themselves that also includes themselves. I'm hesitant to name what that larger thing is because people have many different names for it. But it often happens that people discover themselves to be more than the small, separate self they have taken themselves to be. This discovery often comes in the last months, days, or moments of life. Some would say that’s too late, and I would agree. We can discover what death has to teach us at any time. We don't have to wait until we're dying. 1 4 4 0.O R G / R E G I S T E R

1440:
How can we access these lessons before our death so we can live a fuller life?
Frank:
The process of dying and the process of going inward using spiritual or contemplative practices have a lot in common. There is this growing silence that happens along with a general withdrawing from the world, or at least from the outer circles of the world. There is a slowing down and an appreciation of moment-tomoment experience. There's also the stripping away of separation. When you are born into a somewhat typical mother-child bond, you are swimming in a sea of non-separation. You don’t know that; that’s just your experience. Gradually, you necessarily develop a sense of individuality and independence. You move away from that sense of pure unity and develop a personality. You develop boundaries and split the world into I and other, mind and body, etc. In the dying process, there is an opportunity to dissolve those false boundaries.
1440: Frank:
What is this thing you refer to that’s larger than us and also includes us? It’s the thing that gives people a greater sense of meaning in their lives and helps them step beyond their limiting beliefs and ideas. For some people, it's religious conviction—faith. For others, it's time in nature. Perhaps the most common one for people is their relationships. Having them is a common experience, but they take shape uniquely for each person. We are all both individual and not separate. The image that's used all the time is the wave and the ocean. The wave is absolutely unique and beautiful, and it’s also not separate from the ocean.
1440:
In addition to the fear of dying, we also fear being the one left behind. What lessons have you learned that would be helpful for those who are grieving?
Frank:
It's curious to me in this culture how fixated we are on managing grief. People say, “It's been six weeks, you should be ready to move on.” We do that with death and with the loss of a job or a relationship. Grief is a thread, an underground stream that moves through all of us. When we turn toward it instead of trying to get rid of it, we learn something from it, like any other emotion or mental state.

1-866-720-1440
I think the most important thing in working with our grief is to not turn away—or to come back to it if we do turn away—and follow it through all manifestations. Grief isn’t just sadness, it can be numbness or relief or guilt—it’s a constellation of experiences. Whatever your grief looks like, you must turn toward it. 1440:
Do you see a shift happening in our country when it comes to death and dying? It still feels like we have an abstract faith that medicine or science will save us.
Frank:
I was at a dinner for tech entrepreneurs last year, and I said something like, “Death is inevitable.” Some guy raised his hand and said, “We’re working on that!” It’s true that we have been a terribly death denying culture, and I think that has a lot to do with how we have medicalized death over the last several decades. In past decades, and in many cultures, death was a part of everyday life. People planned for it and they experienced it close-up. When a loved one died, they saw bodies in their own homes and their neighbors’ houses. I have a doctor friend who says that these incredible leaps in medicine and science over the past 50 to 100 years have morphed into the fantasy that we will be able to defeat all death. Now, the benefits of medicine are obvious. If not for them I wouldn't be here talking to you (I had triple bypass surgery a few years ago). But in falling for the idea that we will be able to solve and treat everything, we have lost touch with the age-old ability to help people die. Having said that, I actually think people are hungry to talk about dying. I think they just want to talk about it with someone who is not so afraid. And that’s happening more and more. There are more books, movies, and documentaries about the topic than ever before. I think the baby boomer generation, who has always wanted choice, wants choice around death too. Death is coming out of the closet and people are seeing that it’s much more than a medical event. I believe our task is to meet death. We don't have to like it, we don't have to agree with it, but we have to meet it. James Baldwin had that beautiful line, “Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced.” I think that's a call to courage, to meeting what's right in front of us. This interview was conducted on behalf of 1440 Multiversity by Jenn Brown, a freelance writer and editor.

The Brain in Love: A Conversation with Dr. Helen Fisher Dr. Helen Fisher is an internationally renowned neuroscientist, biological anthropologist, and pioneer in the biology of human personality. Named one of “the 15 most amazing women in science today” by Business Insider, Dr. Fisher is the most referenced scholar in the field of love and relationships in the world today. She is a senior research fellow at the Kinsey Institute, an anthropologist at Rutgers University, and chief scientific advisor for Match.com.
1440:
Let’s talk about what neuroscience reveals about love. What happens in the brain when we are in love?
Helen:
I'd like to first define love. I'm a neuroscientist, and I think we've evolved three distinctly different brain systems for mating and reproduction. One is the sex drive. The second is feelings of intense romantic love. And the third is feelings of deep attachment. It’s important to consider that all three are connected, though not always. You can fall madly in love with one person and feel deeply attached to another.
1440:
Let’s talk about romantic love.
Helen:
My colleagues and I have put over 100 people who were madly in love into a brain scanner. The first group were people who considered themselves happily in love. The second group were people who had just been dumped, or rejected in love. And the third were people in love long-term— people married an average of 21 years who said they were still in love. Among those who were happily in love, we found the greatest brain activity in a tiny little factory near the base of the brain called the ventral tegmental area (VTA). It is a brain region that makes dopamine, which is a natural stimulant. Dopamine gives you optimism, focus, motivation, energy, and can also give you intense feelings of romantic passion.

What's interesting about the VTA is that it lies in the same general region as the brain factories that orchestrate thirst and hunger. So, it occurred to me, wow, being in love is not an emotion. There's a lot of emotions involved in romance, of course. There's a lot of cognitive thinking processes involved too. But, basically, romantic love is a drive—a primitive drive that leads us to seek life's greatest prize: a mating partner. So, that's why we (myself and my brain scanning colleague Lucy Brown) call it a "survival mechanism." Romantic love evolved in the brain as a basic reproductive tool to drive you to form the kind of relationship that may lead to children and enable your DNA to survive into the next generation.

1440:
What did you learn from studying the brains of people rejected in love?
Helen:
For me, it was even more important to understand the neural pathways of rejection than what happens in the brains of those happily in love. As expected, we discovered activity in the same brain region—the ventral tegmental area way down in the drive region of the brain.
1440:
How do you believe rejection is best handled?
Helen:
I think the Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) philosophy applies: Get rid of the cards and letters. If you can't get rid of them, put them in a closet where you can't see them. Don't write. Don't call. Don't show up. Don't ask your friends about the person.
This makes sense because you don't stop loving somebody when you have been rejected. In fact, you can love them even harder. I call it "frustration attraction."
What you're doing when you do that is just reviving the ghost. There's somebody living in your head, and you’ve got to get them out. If you drunk call them on New Year's Eve and they're nice to you because they feel guilty and it spurs your hope again, you're just waylaying the process of recovery.
When there's a real barrier to relationship, this brain system can work even harder.
When studying people rejected in love, we also saw activity in a brain region in the anterior insula that is linked with anxiety, stress, and physical pain.
But we also found activity in a brain region linked with feelings of deep attachment to the partner. Attachment also doesn't die when you are dumped. And we found activity in three brain regions linked with craving and addiction.
This particular brain region becomes active when you have a bad toothache.
That’s what I was looking for. There's a brain region called the nucleus accumbens that becomes very active when you have any substance addiction, like alcohol or nicotine or cocaine. But the nucleus accumbens is also activated during all behavioral addictions—everything from gambling to sex addiction to eating disorders to kleptomania. And this same brain region that becomes active in all of the substance and behavioral addictions also becomes active when you are rejected in love. That discovery drove me to go back and look at people who were happily in love to see if they were activating this region, and indeed they were. I can't get another person in my field to believe me, but I think that romantic love is a positive addiction when it's the right person at the right time and all is well. It is a positive addiction that evolved millions of years ago to drive us to form a pair bond and send our DNA into tomorrow. But, it can certainly be a horribly negative addiction also.
The difference between romantic rejection and a toothache is you go to the dentist, you solve the tooth problem, and a week later you've forgotten it. But it can take months or years of trying to get over a rejection in love. 1440:
Do you believe we can move from being in love with someone to being friends?
Helen:
I think it is a myth to think we can transition from one to the other. One of the things I say to people after a breakup is, "Tell the person: Look, I have to get over this. I'll get back to you in two or three years when I'm completely over it." Then, two or three years later, you've lost that passion. You haven't forgotten, of course—the memory system doesn't get killed—but the emotions that go along with the rejection are now gone, and you have moved on. We have proven with our brain scanning that time heals. This interview was conducted by Kate Green Tripp, Managing Editor for 1440 Multiversity.
Simply put, I think it's an addiction and it needs to be treated as an addiction. It's amazing how many therapists will say, "Well, just leave him (or her)." And yet, you can't just leave the person if it's an addiction. You have to know how to handle it.

Immerse yourself in an easy-to-learn, relaxing, and fun way to create beautiful images by drawing structured patterns. Discover the Zentangle Method—an elegant metaphor for deliberate artistry in life. Zentangle cofounders Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas lead this exploration, working solely on white surfaces with black ink. For beginners and beyond, enjoy this creative way to increase your focus and shift your mood and state of mind. We are always making “strokes” (thoughts, words, deeds) in our life. By practicing the Zentangle Method's suggestion to make each stroke deliberate, you understand how those apparently small and insignificant “strokes” of our moment-to-moment lives contribute to an overall life pattern.
