Community Building in the San Lorenzo Valley Dear friends, When we co-created 1440 Multiversity, we envisioned our non-profit learning destination as a safe place to allow creativity to flourish and energy to renew; a catalyst for individuals to be self-aware and discover their own unique path for growth. Building collaborative communities leading generative lives is the core of our mission, and we continue to live that mission fully as we answer the call for help in a bigger way – help that was critically needed before the COVID-19 pandemic changed our lives, and even more so right now as the wildfires in California devastate so many individuals, businesses and families. That is why we are introducing the Healing Our Community Initiative. Humanity is experiencing a time right now that is uncertain and challenging beyond measure. Our community is especially vulnerable and needs support. We wish to create hope for renewal and believe that new compassionate connections grow out of crisis - a love and respect for one another begins to unveil itself. We owe a debt of gratitude to firefighters, law enforcement, dispatchers, medical personnel, volunteers, aid workers, city officials and many others at the forefront of this crisis who put others first and often make selfless sacrifices to help preserve the lives of others. We developed the Healing Our Community initiative as a transition housing program for those directly impacted by the wildfires who have been displaced or had their homes destroyed so they may begin the path to healing and self-care.

When the pandemic began, 1440 Multiversity was proud to be designated as an Essential Business by the County of Santa Cruz, Office of Emergency Services while partnering to serve as an Alternative Care Site and preparing meals for county shelters. 1440 Multiversity is now prepared to expand our community service even further to offer relief, encouragement, and hope to those victimized by the wildfires who qualify for the program. The Healing Our Community program includes temporary housing, educational and therapeutic sessions, contemplative practices and embodied movement classes for those who are selected for this program. While services are limited, our campus does offer a safe environment to reconnect, reflect and renew a sense of hope to the lives of others. Every dollar so generously given to the Healing Our Community Initiative will go towards the funding of this program. We hope you will join us in this effort to prioritize the care of our neighbors, friends and families in need. With your help, we can dedicate important resources to the wildfire victims and support their ability to re-establish their lives. With gratitude,

Joanie & Scott Kriens Joanie and Scott Kriens Co-creators, 1440 Multiversity

Coming Together to Heal Our Community THE HEALING OUR COMMUNITY INITIATIVE is a transitional wellness housing program that provides individuals directly impacted by the loss of their residence a place to heal and time to care for and connect with themselves, in order to cope with the stress and anxiety of planning for the future now exacerbated by the fear of homelessness. This restorative program at 1440 Multiversity may be paid for by individuals’ insurance coverage, as an out-of-pocket expense, or funded for those less fortunate by generous donors, sponsors and partners who wish to support the mental health and physical, emotional and spiritual rejuvenation of those victimized by the recent and ongoing wildfires. Healing Our Community is a long-term stay program ranging from 31-90 days or more. Registered guests will stay on the private 75acre non-profit 1440 Multiversity campus located in the Santa Cruz Mountains, and during their stay, individuals will be provided with safe, comfortable housing and opportunities to engage in restorative wellness-centric signature classes twice each day. Resources made available at 1440 will help participants overcome the stress, anxiety and grief they are experiencing in order to begin the healing process and establish continued care of self, family and other loved ones. A full year of online care curriculum and resources will also be available for all participants while on campus and after they depart.

Urgency On August 17, 2020, lightning strikes started hundreds of fires across Northern California, and in the days since, over 1 million acres have burned. California is currently under a state of emergency and the fire season in 2020 is on pace to be worst in history, surpassing more than 3 million acres burned. The CZU Lightning Complex Fire that ravaged the San Lorenzo Valley and is now contained resulted in one civilian casualty; however, it destroyed 925 residences and damaged nearly 100 more with over 7,600 structures threatened and approximately 5,600 families applying for FEMA assistance. Collectively, the CZU Lightning Complex Fire destroyed 1,490 structures — including 171 commercial structures and 388 other minor structures — leaving residents traumatized, homeless and, in the worst cases, destitute.

Many residents who called the San Lorenzo Valley home have been forced to seek shelter and refuge elsewhere — in some cases hotels and apartments, and in worst cases in their vehicles separated from their families. The physical evacuation caused fear and a feeling of exposure, and the weight and gravity of losing their homes and personal belongings weighs heavily on those still impacted. These individuals require the supportive care of friends, family, loved ones and others who just want to help. The Healing Our Community Initiative allows for a first-step towards the renewal of a degree of normalcy surrounded by much-needed community and understanding during these most difficult times. It is incumbent upon those who have the ability to help to step forward and create hope for the future.

Expected Outcome Registered approved participants will find peace and comfort here while experiencing a renewed sense of hope and purpose by learning to process grief and begin healing; and a sense of deep gratitude from the community who supports them. In addition to the classes and educational resource sessions that will be available, ongoing access to 1440.tv and a continued-support program will offer participants the ability to further their learning and connection to the subjects they explored during their healing sessions on campus.

Eligibility Homeowners with insurance policies that cover additional living expenses (ALE) or loss of use may register directly for this program if their coverage pays for extra costs to live while their home is uninhabitable. Individuals who do not have such coverage can also register and pay out of pocket for the program directly.

Program Capacity In order to adhere to strict social distancing and group gathering guidelines in keeping with public safety, this program will be limited to 100 participants.

Launch Date & Term This program will launch in October 2020 with tier-pricing option for participants to choose from ranging from a minimum of 31 days up to six months or more.

1440 Multiversity: Our Beginning NEARLY A DECADE AGO, 1440 Multiversity co-creator Joanie Kriens was inspired while tending to and harvesting vegetables in her home garden. In that mindful moment, she was overcome by feelings of happiness, contentment, and joy – for the colorful tomatoes and squash in her basket, the quiet beauty of the land, and the preciousness of life with her family and friends. This heightened awareness and gratitude may have only lasted just a minute or two, yet it had a profound effect on Joanie. It made her wonder how many minutes there are in each day, and how we might all live more self-aware with gratitude for the simple blessings in life. After turning to Google for the answer, the 1440 name was born – little did she know she would find it in her own backyard. Following several years of philanthropic grant-making, the 1440 Multiversity campus opened in May 2017 among the towering redwoods of the Santa Cruz Mountains, stemming from a desire to establish a beautiful and nurturing physical location where community could gather to explore, learn, reflect, connect, and re-energize. The invitation to participate is extended to all unbound by the range of human differences. While the physical aspects of social gatherings have changed in this time of crisis, our dedication to safely serving our community, employees, and guests remains a committed passion for the 1440 Multiversity team.

What is a Multiversity? Unlike a university, which focuses on the intellect, a multiversity is a place for holistic learning that engages the mind, body, and heart and shapes one's inner fitness. At 1440, we believe that the deepest learning happens when we nurture and awaken all aspects of ourselves. "Multi" represents the many doors and avenues one can enter or exit on their individual journey. "Versity" refers to the social, emotional, and relational aspects of learning that we can use to shape our desires and build more collaborative and connected communities while creating hope for living well.

By the Numbers 75: Size in acres of the 1440 campus 300: The mile radius from campus that 1440 sources all of its produce and other foods. 775: The number of scholarships that 1440 grants each year. 1,200: The estimated age in years of the “Mother Tree” — a grand redwood situated near the Cathedral on campus and among the oldest trees in the world. 100,000: Guests who have participated in learning courses on campus since opening in May 2017. 150,000: Number of honeybees that call 1440 home – two more bee colonies were added in May 2020, and each colony produces 50 pounds of honey per year that is used in a variety of 1440 recipes.

1440 Multiversity at a Glance Non-Profit: 1440 Multiversity is an operating 501(c)(3) philanthropic campus – a stay at 1440 supports the campus work of self and society, helps award program scholarships, and grants to individuals and organizations in need that foster the 1440 vision of creating hope for living well. Flora & Fauna: The Santa Cruz Mountains are largely the result of compressive uplift caused by a bend of the San Andreas Fault. A region of great biological diversity, the 1440 campus rests on a small isolated stand of old-growth forest home to a tremendous species of birds, a subspecies of mule deer, as well as western gray squirrels, chipmunks and raccoons. Foxes, coyotes, bobcats and cougars also inhabit the region but are rarely seen.

Essential Business Designation 1440 Multiversity has been designated as an Essential Business by the County of Santa Cruz, Office of Emergency Services. In April 2020, 1440 Multiversity and the County of Santa Cruz announced a twopart partnership to provide meals to shelters and service sites, along with establishing an Alternative Care Site. By the end of May, the 1440 Multiversity culinary team proudly and mindfully prepared more than 40,000 shelter meals to provide individuals nourishment, and in September prepared and provided 21,000 complimentary meals to residents, first responders and evacuees during the CZU Lightning Complex Fires.

Our Philosophy: Food is Medicine THE MENU OFFERINGS at 1440 Multiversity were established with the notion that nutrition is a critical component for physical and emotional health and healing. With that in mind, the 1440 Multiversity culinary team – led by Executive Chef Kenny Woods – operates mindfully and with a “Food is Medicine” approach, sourcing its ingredients exclusively from local growers. Many restaurants and commercial kitchens procure their ingredients from national distributors; at 1440 Multiversity, our team and the guests we serve take comfort in both seeing and knowing where our ingredients originate from. The partnerships in our community don’t just allow 1440 access to the most fresh and seasonal ingredients – it allows us to support, enhance, and strengthen the supply chain in the County of Santa Cruz and within the region, ensuring that we are contributing to local economic health, as well. By way of supporting 1440 Multiversity, guests are also contributing to the livelihood of local and regional growers, who despite the incredible need for wholesome food have been deeply impacted by business loss.

Long-Term Commitment to Nourishment 1440 Multiversity enjoys an active strategic partnership with the Teaching Kitchen Collaborative – launched by the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health's Department of Nutrition, The Culinary Institute of America, and Dr. David Eisenberg. The principle teachings within this partnership have allowed 1440 Multiversity to implement industry-leading philosophies and best practices into its culinary work.

The Santa Cruz Community Farmers' Markets (SCCFM) began a partnership with 1440 Multiversity in 2017 with the shared value of supporting regional agriculture. Since that point, they have shopped at the markets weekly, providing new income for the many organic growers we work with. Producers include local well-known farms like Pinnacle Ranch, Happy Boy, Blue Heron, Garden Variety, Kashiwase Farm, Serendipity Farms, Ken's Top Notch, and Live Earth Farm. 1440 also volunteered their time, skill and resources as guest chefs for our 2019 Pop-Up Breakfast Series, raising funds for our educational programs. Working with Kenny Woods and the capable team at 1440 is easy, productive and rewarding. We are excited about their potential role in this project and strongly support the sourcing of healthy, whole foods direct from local farms at the markets.

– NESH DHILLON, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, SANTA CRUZ COMMUNIT Y FARMERS’ MARKETS

The 1440 Multiversity Culinary Team DYNAMIC AS IT IS COMPASSIONATE, the 1440 Multiversity culinary team employs a range of highly talented professionals. Here are just three members of the 1440 family that help make our cuisine uniquely fresh and nourishing.

Kenny Woods, Executive Chef Passionate about creating menus in harmony with the seasons and what's growing in Northern California, Executive Chef Kenny Woods has established unique partnerships with the Santa Cruz farmers markets. Our relationship with local growers and producers allows us to cook with the freshest ingredients while supporting neighboring and coastal farms. Kenny got his start in the kitchen as a young boy, standing on a chair helping his Italian grandmother stir soups for the family. As a teen, he taught himself to cook from watching cooking shows, finding recipes, and taste testing along the way. By 13, he loved cooking and knew he wanted to be a chef. From dishwasher, to prep cook, to sous chef by the age of 19, Kenny has been developing his craft throughout his life. After spending several years as an executive chef in Arizona, Kenny joined the 1440 family. His philosophy is to believe in the ingredients and showcase them with integrity, while loving the process, so food sustains its living energy and the care of those who prepare it. Kenny supports local communities and farmers and creates meals with the hope of inspiring guests to cook simply prepared, delicious meals at home. “Knowing where your food comes from and what its ingredients are is so crucial to making the world a better place,” Kenny says. “If we all spend a little more time cooking fresh food, we would have less worries about what we’re fueling our bodies with.”

Mike MacDonald, Master Gardener As a market manager for the Santa Cruz farmers markets, Mike MacDonald has been helping 1440 procure all of the fresh ingredients for our meals since the campus opened. Mike was so impressed with our commitment to freshness that he inquired about working for 1440 directly and within the last year has become our Master Gardener, tending Joanie's Garden located just outside of the 1440 Teaching Kitchen. Some of the items that Mike has nurtured in the garden include edible flowers, herbs, and various fruits and vegetables. He preserves much of it, and frequently dries foods as well, such as dried chilies from the summer and sunflower seeds. With his background and education in agriculture, food systems, and gardening, Mike collaborates with the chefs at 1440 to ensure that Joanie’s Garden is an ever-evolving, blossoming and sustainable haven on campus for visitors to enjoy.

Pete Delfino, Campus Forager Deeply rooted in a prominent local farming family that has been in business since the 1920s, campus forager Pete Delfino procures 100 percent of the produce, meat, poultry, fish, spices, flours, and unique ingredients that our 1440 chefs request – sometimes with just a few days’ notice. The relationships he has sowed in the community have allowed 1440 to go grower-direct in ways that many kitchens cannot, allowing 1440 to benefit from the best ingredients in the region. After many successful years as a farmer, Pete intended to retire soon. His plans unexpectedly changed once he started delivering produce to 1440. He enjoyed his growing relationships with the team here and came to appreciate the commitment we had to locally grown produce. When he heard 1440 was looking for someone to step into a procurement role, he jumped at the opportunity. With his expertise, creativity, curiosity, and connections to the farming community, Pete brings enthusiasm and natural expertise to the 1440 family, and in return he feels re-energized. “I fell in love with how innovative and creative the team and young chefs at 1440 are,” Pete says. “There’s so much passion for this place it’s addictive.”

Kitchen Health & Safety 1440 MULTIVERSITY TAKES EXTREME CARE in its health and safety policies on campus, including in the kitchen. All meals are prepared in a kitchen that is safe, sterile, and experiences rigorous routine cleaning. • Upon arrival to campus, all culinary team members enter through one back door and move through a series of management-monitored no-touch stations to have their temperature taken, wash their hands for 25 seconds, and put on gloves and their disposable mask – all set up in order to avoid cross-contamination. Staff wear procedural or surgical masks only, which further increases the safety of one another and the recipients of each meal. • There are four kitchen zones regulated to minimize movement through cooking areas and to adhere to social distancing; once there, staff deep-clean their area before food preparation begins. Every 30 minutes a timer goes off for staff to wash their hands – staff members average washing their hands 74 times per work week. • The loading dock is accessible by management only, and the dock manager sanitizes every incoming package in a Neutral Zone established for the exchange of goods only. Ways to Support the Healing Our Community Initiative INSURANCE COMPANIES, INDIVIDUALS, NONPROFIT FOUNDATIONS, PHILANTHROPISTS AND CORPORATIONS can sponsor and support this community initiative with their heartfelt generosity to those in need. 1440 Multiversity is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit campus by virtue of our charitable work and each financial gift designated for this program in its entirety — 100 percent — will be used to support those who qualify and are in need. There are three ways to join us and help provide support for the Healing Our Community Initiative:

Become a Sponsor

Become a Fundraiser

A sponsorship of the Healing Our Community Initiative provides the resources necessary to register participants in need of housing and comfort – there are various levels of sponsorships available to those willing to help.

Community building is a core fundamental of the 1440 vision. We welcome any mission-aligned individuals and organizations (along with your family and friends) to join our efforts and assist with bridging a philanthropic relationship with those who seek to help fund this initiative and support those in dire need.

Become a Donor No matter the level of giving, each donation makes a critical impact and provides necessary funding to support individuals in dire need of resources and support – especially those who did not have comprehensive insurance coverage. Donations may be made by submitting your donation online at 1440.org/donate, by mail, or by speaking with a member of the 1440 Multiversity team. All donors will receive an income tax donation receipt.
