1440 MULTIVERSITY IS AMONG THE MOST SPECIAL PLACES IN THE WORLD – equal parts educational and energizing, the 75-acre campus invites all people unbound by differences to come together in community to explore, learn, reflect, connect and reenergize themselves and their organizations through conversations that matter. Groups and individuals who visit 1440 experience time differently, exploring important global issues that matter to the greater good while surrounded by mountain air and towering ancient redwoods. 1440 Multiversity meticulously curates experiences that connect people while allowing them to discover new approaches for how to live, lead, love, work and wonder. We are in a time when the world needs support more than ever before. Our foundational belief is that creating hope for living well rests in the ability to cultivate strong authentic relationships – with ourselves, with each other and with the world around us. There is great energy created in immersion learning – setting aside daily urgencies and dedicating uninterrupted time and curiosity to focus our inner fitness which leads to a greater good. Together with the 1440 Foundation and generous philanthropic partners and corporate donors, 1440 Multiversity has provided more than 750 scholarships to individuals in need and granted hundreds of thousands of dollars to other nonprofit organizations. In order to continue this mission work that is so important to self and society, we actively engage and partner with organizations who strive to be a part of the solution, and share a passion for the causes that we have devoted our time to impact. 1440 commits to do more, and 100 percent of funds gifted to 1440 Multiversity go toward supporting critical programs that give back to attendees. The capacity for hope is the most significant fact of life. It provides human beings with a sense of destination and the energy to create communities that care. We look forward to partnering with you in our collective efforts to create this hope for living well and provide individuals and communities an energy where anyone can be inspired to pay forward in community building. 1440 Multiversity: Our Beginning NEARLY A DECADE AGO while tending to and harvesting vegetables in her home garden, 1440 Multiversity co-creator Joanie Kriens was overcome by feelings of happiness, contentment and joy for the colorful tomatoes and squash in her basket, the quiet beauty of the land, and the preciousness of life with her family and friends. This heightened awareness and gratitude may have only lasted just a minute or two, yet it had a profound effect on Joanie. It made her wonder how many minutes there are in each day, and how we might all live more self-aware with gratitude for the simple blessings in life. After turning to Google for the answer, the 1440 name was born – little did she know she would find all the inspiration she needed in her own backyard. Following several years of philanthropic grantmaking through the 1440 Foundation, the Krienses opened the 1440 Multiversity campus in May 2017 among the towering redwoods of the Santa Cruz Mountains. It stemmed from a desire to establish a beautiful and nurturing physical location where community could gather to explore, learn, reflect, connect and reenergize. A place where the invitation to participate is extended to all unbound by the range of human differences. While the physical aspects of social gatherings have changed in this time of crisis, our dedication to safely serving our community, employees, and guests remains a committed passion for the 1440 Multiversity team.
What is a Multiversity? Unlike a university, which focuses on the intellect, a multiversity is a place for holistic learning that engages the mind, body, and heart and shapes one's inner fitness. At 1440, we believe that the deepest learning happens when we nurture and awaken all aspects of ourselves. "Multi" represents the many doors and avenues one can enter or exit on their individual journey. "Versity" refers to the social, emotional, and relational aspects of learning that we can use to shape our desires and build more collaborative and connected communities while creating hope for living well.
Nonprofit Status 1440 Multiversity is an operating 501(c)(3) philanthropic campus – a stay at 1440 supports the campus work of self and society, helps award program scholarships and grants, and fosters the 1440 vision of creating hope for living well. Each financial gift in its entirety – 100 percent – is used to support those in need.
By the Numbers 75: Size in acres of the 1440 campus 300: The mile radius from campus that 1440 sources all of its produce and other foods. 775: The number of scholarships granted each year. 1,200: The estimated age in years of the “Mother Tree” — a grand redwood situated near the Cathedral on campus and among the oldest trees in the world. 100,000: Guests who have participated in learning courses on campus since opening in May 2017.
Essential Business Designation 1440 Multiversity has been designated as an Essential Business by the County of Santa Cruz, Office of Emergency Services. In April 2020, 1440 Multiversity and the County of Santa Cruz announced a twopart partnership to provide meals to shelters and service sites, along with establishing an Alternative Care Site. By the end of May, the 1440 Multiversity culinary team proudly and mindfully prepared more than 40,000 shelter meals to provide individuals nourishment, and in September prepared and provided 21,000 complimentary meals to residents, first responders and evacuees during the CZU Lightning Complex Fires.
Uniquely Different Giving Opportunities A catalyst for energy, inspiration and generosity
WITH AN ALL-INCLUSIVE CAMPUS, a heart-centered approach to service, and partnerships with some of the world’s most impactful mission-aligned organizations and up-and-coming changemakers, 1440 Multiversity provides a well-respected platform to help individuals and organizations achieve their personal growth goals. When a donor generously provides financial support to 1440 Multiversity, they can be assured that every dollar directly supports our work of self and society through several different channels and defining attributes.
Pairing Organizations with Opportunities 1440 Multiversity is the catalyst for philanthropic individuals and groups to connect with organizations in need to help fulfill one other’s initiatives. This model allows a donor to fund a broader wellness category – Live Well, Lead Well, Love Well, Work Well or Wonder Well – with 1440 distributing the funds via a campus program to vetted partner organizations.
Campus Setting Placed within 75 acres of redwood forest in the Santa Cruz Mountains, the all-inclusive 1440 Multiversity campus provides supportive infrastructure combined with deep heartfelt hospitality for an incredibly impactful guest experience. All registered program guests receive accommodations, three meals per day at Kitchen Table, up to three Signature Classes per day, and ample opportunity for connection with others.
Mindful and Seasonal Culinary What we put in our bodies directly impacts our health and wellbeing, and the culinary program at 1440 is designed with a “food is medicine” approach to aid in your self-growth journey. In addition to meals that are fresh, nutritious and savory, ingredients are sourced from a 300-mile radius of campus which allow us to financially support our local farms, too.
Signature Classes All guests at 1440 have access to a variety of signature classes offered three times per day, which may include nature walks, embodied movement, art, sound baths, drumming and more. Taught by 1440 instructors, classes allow exploration of new interests and a way to connect with themselves and other guests.
Scholarship Program A primary organizational objective is to provide access to those seeking to acquire skills and knowledge towards a path of self-discovery. 1440 Multiversity accepts thousands of applications for program scholarships, and grants more than 775 fully funded tuition scholarships to aspiring program attendees each year.
Impactful Curricula The learning components of all 1440 Multiversity campus programs are comprehensive and thoughtfully designed in order to support the individual needs of each program attendee. Developed by 1440 in partnership with leading experts, and led by knowledgeable staff and visiting faculty, curricula help energize and heal the mind, body and spirit, gifting guests the tools they need to continue their selfgrowth and healing from home.

Live Well in Action
Dr. David Eisenberg: Food is Medicine AS PART OF ITS LIVE WELL COMMITMENT, 1440 Multiversity enjoys an active strategic partnership with the Teaching Kitchen Collaborative – launched by the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health’s Department of Nutrition, The Culinary Institute of America, and Dr. David Eisenberg, the director of culinary nutrition at Harvard. The principle teachings within this partnership have allowed 1440 Multiversity to implement industry-leading philosophies and best practices into its culinary work. Dr. Eisenberg recently spoke with 1440 Multiversity about his path to developing this critical work; we invite you to read the full interview at 1440.org/TKC. 1440 Multiversity: How have you come to be so passionate and involved in supporting teaching kitchens? Dr. Eisenberg: On paper, I’m a Harvard-trained doctor, boardcertified internal medicine. I practiced primary care for about 20 years, and I’ve been a clinical teacher and researcher on the faculty at Harvard since 1984. Also, I am the son and grandson of Jewish bakers from Brooklyn. As a child, I spent almost every weekend learning to cook and bake at my father’s side. The power of making delicious food for others is something that I learned so early on that it has been a part of everything I’ve done.
DR. DAVID EISENBERG
Sadly, when I was 10, my father died suddenly of a heart attack. He died six weeks after his mother and my mother’s mother, all of unrelated diseases. And about a year later, my other living grandfather died. My mother was left with four children, ranging in age from one to 13. I was the second, age 10. And it was horrible As a result of that tragic time, I wanted to study medicine because I couldn’t understand what had happened. 1440: Is it challenging to prove efficacy of preventative medicine? Dr. Eisenberg: Back in 1971, the concept of prevention was nowhere to be found in the premedical curriculum or in medical school. When I went to Harvard Medical School, nobody was studying the impact of what we ate, how we moved or how our mind-body connection impacted our physiology or our health. So, I decided to learn Chinese and go to China. I became the first person to document in The New England Journal of Medicine the frequency with which Americans were using all these therapies. That catapulted my career and helped me do some of the early research on acupuncture, herbal medicine, massage and mindbody work. I was the recipient of the first large National Institutes of Health grant to build a center of excellence at Harvard looking
at complementary, alternative and integrative medicine. Now, remember, I’m a baker’s son. So, in 1998, I approached the top cooking school in the U.S., the Culinary Institute of America, and said, “It’s been my observation that nobody in medicine, meaning doctors, knows anything about nutrition. And even fewer people know anything about cooking or shopping for food and making delicious, healthy food.” And, I said, “I would like to teach my colleagues about nutrition, shopping, and cooking as well as lifestyle.” They said, “That’s great, because we want to teach our chefs about nutrition. They don’t understand the science.” We shook hands, myself and the head of the nutrition department, Professor Walter Willett, and we launched a conference called Healthy Kitchens, Healthy Lives, which has been given 15 times since 2006, always sold out. That’s where I met 1440 Multiversity Executive Chef Kenny Woods, and he introduced me to co-creators Joanie and Scott Kriens. Healthy Kitchens, Healthy Lives is presented to 400 people a year at the Culinary Institute in Napa, California, where participants learn the science behind what they should be eating more of or less of and why. We teach how to translate the science into healthy, delicious, and sustainable recipes, the kind of food Chef Kenny makes at 1440. Then we talk about mindfulness and its role in eating, cooking, enjoying food and living; exercise; and strategies to change behavior when you’re stuck. 1440 is the hosting site for world-class scientists, public health experts, physicians, and thought leaders in the health and sustainability world to come together and share their research. I can’t think of a more appropriate site for such a conference. •

Lead Well in Action Monica Martinez: Discovering True North
AS THE CEO OF ENCOMPASS COMMUNITY SERVICES, the largest community-based nonprofit in Santa Cruz County that provides vital services to individuals and families who are in greatest need, Monica Martinez is focused daily on the health, wellness, and security of others. The Bakersfield, California native has an extensive background in social change, supported by a political science degree from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo and a Master’s Degree in public administration from University of Southern California. After a series of leadership roles at nonprofits focused on social justice, including an Executive Director role of a Los Angelesbased organization that focused on homelessness, she relocated to Santa Cruz in 2015 to lead the 45-year-old Encompass and its more than 500 employees. A leader who thrives on evidence-based, outcome-driven strategies, Monica was one of 60 participants in a 1440 True North Leadership workshop, which she applied for in part to explore leading a more integrated life. The results, which she details in a thank-you letter to the True North faculty below, are some that she continues to foster in her daily work and personal life. “I did the homework, I read the book [Discover Your True North], I and learned the ways that True North can help you grow and lead others,” she said. “The group work and other onsite practice is very powerful, as is the sense of community and support.” • Visit 1440.org/TrueNorth to watch an exclusive video interview with Monica and testimonials from other participants about how True North has impacted their lives and leadership abilities.
A Letter of Gratitude I just wanted to take a moment to thank you for the opportunity to attend the True North Leadership program last week. My experience in the program was priceless. The insights that I gained while carving out the time to be introspective, connect with others, and be present in a beautiful location will make a lasting impression on my life. Thank you. Since leaving 1440 on Friday, I have continued to be energized by the possibilities of living a more integrated life. I have been putting this work in to practice over the last several days and I thought I’d share a story from this week: My one-on-one with Scott inspired me to take a different approach to my monthly leadership meeting (about 60 attendees). Instead of opening the meeting with my regular report, I decided to authentically share about how the challenges of my personal journey led to my deeply held values of dignity, resiliency, and human potential. I then threaded those values through the agenda of the two-hour meeting. Following the meeting, I received zero feedback (positive or negative) from others, so I just thought “that wasn’t so bad, but I’m not sure it made a difference.” However, the following day one of my executive-level direct reports, a woman
who prides herself on being private and unemotional, deeply confided in me about her professional fears and insecurities. Another manager approached me for the first time and asked for leadership advice on building her team. And a manager who had submitted her resignation hours before the leadership meeting to accept a higherpaying job offer in another city chose to retract her resignation and stay at Encompass. I can’t be certain that these things happened as a direct result of my vulnerability at the leadership meeting, but I do suspect it played a role. In this case, it seems like ‘being the first to dance’ worked. So again, thank you for the opportunity to continue growing. I’d love to deepen my learning and stay connected to True North Leadership and 1440 however possible. If there are opportunities to do so, please keep me in mind. You have created something very special. With gratitude,
Monica Martinez

Advocacy
1440 Multiversity supports community building and charitable collaboration as a vital role in maintaining community morale and cohesion. We invite social service agencies, nonprofit organizations, community groups, or recreational or special-interest clubs to join us in our work at the local level to meet our community needs. Missionaligned groups committed to organizing efforts around issues like the negative health effects of food insecurity, community hunger, and the unequal burden and impacts of such effects on oppressed and marginalized communities help us in our mission of creating hope for living well.
1440 Multiversity encourages and supports several forms of advocacy, each representing an approach to initiate positive changes in society. Many organizations meet at 1440 to work on advocacy initiatives that impact (but are not lim-ited to) education; youth and family issues; justice reform; homelessness; abuse and neglect; and human trafficking. Ashanti Branch: Inspiring change in the community ASHANTI BRANCH, MEd, founder and executive director of the growing nonprofit the Ever Forward Club for boys, develops new ways to engage at-risk youth, inspiring them to stay in school, realize their voices matter, and believe they can become role models in their communities. Recently, Ashanti launched the Ever Forward Summer Arts Experience, which included a special talk with Wynton Marsalis, an open rehearsal at the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music, and a rehearsal and performance of The Comedy of Errors by Santa Cruz Shakespeare. 1440 Multiversity was pleased to partner with Branch to offer 1440 signature classes, nourishing meals, and pod-style living on campus to his group. Learn more about Branch’s remarkable program at everforwardclub.org.
Creative Leaders Meet at 1440 The idea for the Summer Arts Experience began during the first Service Week at 1440, in 2017. Service Week is a unique campuswide program designed for teams from nonprofit organizations. Nonprofit employees, board members, and stakeholders are invited to apply for this week of free, best-in-class professional development underwritten and hosted by 1440. Service Week guests have time to connect, share ideas, and expand their reach in between workshop sessions, which is when Ellen Primack, executive director of the Cabrillo Festival, approached Branch. She asked if he’d like to bring a group of his boys to the festival, which hosts renowned artists from around the world. From that moment on, Primack and Branch collaborated on the Summer Arts Experience for 2019, along with 1440 and Aimee Zygmonski, managing director at Santa Cruz Shakespeare.
Words of Wisdom Of the whole experience, Branch says the most telling part was at the end when the boys said, “I don’t want to go back yet.” Branch believes they found comfort at 1440, so he reminded them, “Ever Forward was created to show how learning can be fun. And, if you work hard, then amazing opportunities will come your way." Important takeaways occurred throughout the weekend, including in the 1440 signature improv class when the group experienced new ways of collaboration and communication, and in the talk with Wynton Marsalis who encouraged them to
pay close attention to the music they listen to — to really listen to the words and ask themselves is it uplifting in any way, and how much are they investing in what goes into their ears that can uplift them?
Any Moment Could Be the One Anyone can attend a workshop, create a career that aligns with their values, and even take daily walks outside to seek invaluable inspiration, but individuals can’t know which moment will contain a sound bite of wisdom or bring a new person, perspective or joy into their life in a way that will change the course of a project, a relationship or a life. These moments catalyze inner evolution and growth, rejuvenate and give hope when things feel stuck. Branch created the Ever Forward Summer Arts Experience for atrisk boys with all this in mind. His goal is to give them a variety of new experiences trusting they will get something they need, and they will have evidence that people see and support them. “If you know that you have people that look up to you, people who want to support you, and that you mean something to them, then it’s harder to want to do nothing,” Branch said. “If you are here with us in this club, then you can’t say that you don’t have someone who wanted to support you.” With deep gratitude to all the partners, Branch says the Ever Forward Summer Arts Experience is going to change those lives, and he looks forward to doing it again. •

Jeff Harbach: Kauffman Fellows is a behavioral fitness program focused on helping individuals become the best versions of themselves so they can support entrepreneurs in new and innovative ways that help them grow their businesses. The fellowship is a twoyear program with seven modules and two international summits. Each June a new class begins their fellowship. At this event we bring them together with the class starting their second year and the class who will graduate. It’s our biggest event of the year other than our international summit, and the graduation is intimate and emotional. 1440: What happens during this module? Harbach: Kauffman Fellows from all over the world participate in a series of exercises through which they become very open, vulnerable, and transparent with each other. They build trust quickly during this module. New fellows are divided into small groups, their forum for the two years. That forum becomes their trusted expert network in both their professional and personal spheres of life. It becomes their accountability group, their support group, and their group that celebrates life's wins and mourns life’s tough times. 1440: Why did you choose the 1440 Multiversity campus? Harbach: We chose 1440 because it’s so directly aligned with what we want the spirit of our event to be. Scott Kriens, co-creator of 1440, believes in what our fellowship enables: real, authentic conversations that matter. That’s what we do with all our different interactions in Kauffman Fellows, and that’s what 1440 is about. Before planning to host the module at 1440, we had been to 1440 for an off-site. At that time, Scott spoke to our team and told us about the meticulous attention that is paid to all 75 acres of the 1440 campus, every single
square foot, because you never know when that moment of inspiration is going to happen for someone — whether it’s while walking along the trails, while being served your personally plated meal, or anywhere else throughout the property. We love that thought. We tell our fellows the same thing: you never know when the inspiration will hit you, so it’s important to be ready to receive it. 1440: Have you heard any stories from the fellows about how their time here helped create relationships that support them in furthering their work in the world? Harbach: Two fellows from different classes met by chance when a bunch of the fellows were together enjoying the grounds of 1440. Due to the nature of the campus, these fellows had an opportunity to connect in a much deeper way than in more traditional settings. One of them was a Limited Partner (LP) and one was a General Partner (GP), and it turned out that the LP ended up investing in that GP’s funds. While perhaps they could have met in another module, the fact is that they were in this environment where they weren’t all going out to different venues for dinner or drinks and they were able to meet in a serendipitous moment perfectly set up by 1440. The GP told me, “That was one of my LPs, that was huge for me.” Fellows continue to tell me about what an amazing experience it was, the breathtaking atmosphere in the Sanctuary for graduation, and that they hope we will return. As we think about helping these fellows go on a journey of becoming the best versions of themselves — which starts with taking a very deep look into themselves and becoming much more self-aware — we want them to be in a place where they can focus on helping each other and connecting in a deep way. Because 1440’s campus feels private and secluded, it creates this magic bubble for meaningful connection. •

Unreasonable Group: Working toward the FUTURE 1440 MULTIVERSITY TAKES GREAT PLEASURE in welcoming groups who share a commitment to a better world and conscious workplace. The campus recently welcomed Unreasonable Group, which shared why they chose 1440 Multiversity as the setting to tackle the world’s toughest challenges. Learn about Unreasonable Group at unreasonablegroup.com. At Unreasonable we want to see a world in which the most valuable and influential companies of our time are those solving humanity’s most pressing issues. We forge unlikely partnerships with some of the world’s largest institutions and most admired brands, and we operate multiple initiatives for growth-stage entrepreneurs across asset classes, industries, and geographies. Unreasonable FUTURE is an initiative that we cofounded with the Fossil Foundation, Pearson, and Accenture, with the goal of sparking a movement that ensures future generations thrive in the new economy. Though automation and the digital era are transforming jobs at an alarming rate, we believe these same technological breakthroughs can be used to enable youth and lifelong learners across all economic classes to not only participate in the jobs of the future, but to excel at them. Unreasonable FUTURE selected 1440 Multiversity as the place to assemble an ecosystem of investors, policy makers, executives, and thought leaders to scale the efforts of the 15 Unreasonable FUTURE entrepreneurs and collaboratively work on this grand challenge together based on 1440’s belief in fostering collaborative communities leading generative lives. One of the most critical elements of our gatherings is proximity to nature. Being surrounded by nature has a way of reminding us to take a breath and find a moment to recharge. The individuals who make up the community we forge at our programs are balancing a lot, both in the experience we are cocreating and in their everyday lives that they have stepped away from for a few days. The redwoods that surround 1440 were as central to the Unreasonable FUTURE experience as the more obvious things like programming and meals. We encouraged groups to have meetings or one-on-one walks among the magnificent redwoods to support deeper connection and creative thinking.
The values and vision of 1440 are closely aligned with our values at Unreasonable—everything from how the food is sourced and served, to the intentionality of the spaces and the servant culture of the team. On top of that, the proximity to San Francisco and Silicon Valley allowed us to assemble a remarkable community for our event in a way we wouldn’t have been able to do as seamlessly elsewhere. The venue couldn’t have been better situated. At the end of every program, we run a closing circle where the group shares gratitude to each individual in the cohort. It's intimate, powerful, emotional, and always a highlight. Over the years, our programs team has rallied to find a place that is both intimate and magical, and it's a notoriously hard thing to create. But at 1440, we simply walked into the redwoods with blankets, chairs, and drinks and huddled in a close circle under the stars. Surrounded by giant trees, we listened to the sound of the creek and the occasional owl. It was the most magical closing circle we've ever experienced. These moments bond the group for life, so we can't begin to emphasize how important this was. The entrepreneurs we brought together at 1440 are very much working at the cutting edge of what the future of work looks like, which is no small task. The space created at 1440 was incredibly powerful for every single one of them in so many ways. The forest trails, the relaxing feel that characterizes every space, the deeply nourishing food, and the proximity to the majestic redwoods reminded the entrepreneurs to breathe and be present with the group to focus on building a truly powerful community that will spark further collaboration and partnership beyond the program. 1440 gave our team and the entrepreneurs the space to inhale and recalibrate on what's really important in life, along with the energy and motivation to move forward and continue to make the world a more equitable and just place to live. For that, we'll always be grateful. •

Each week the 1440 Multiversity campus forager procures the freshest products from local growers, and chefs use their harvests to create wholesome, flavorful meals. The nearby Salinas Valley and city of Watsonville are known as the “Salad Bowl of the World” for the abundant produce they grow, pack, and ship across the nation and abroad, and 1440 is blessed to source directly from them. The menu offerings at 1440 Multiversity were established with the notion that nutrition is a critical component for physical and emotional health and healing. With that in mind, the 1440 Multiversity culinary team operates mindfully and with a “Food is Medicine” approach, and the team and the guests it serves takes comfort in seeing and knowing where these ingredients originate from.
