Essential Training to Heal Our Healthcare Workforce The Healing Our Healthcare Heroes Initiative is a multi-day training program that educates frontline healthcare workers by raising awareness of the impact of topics such as resilience, trauma, moral injury, mental wellness and nutrition, to afford each participant the opportunity to provide the best medical care possible in their community by focusing on their own well-being. Program participants will have continued access to online resources and workshops for one year following the in-person training; this will allow them the proper time to recover, care for and connect with themselves as they continue to cope with the stress and anxiety of everyday work, now exacerbated by the fear and unknown of COVID-19. This essential training was created by 1440 Multiversity after consulting with healthcare executives and is necessary for the long-term health and wellbeing of these professionals. As a debt of gratitude for the tireless efforts of these providers, this three-day, two-night learning workshop program is offered for free and is being funded by generous donors, sponsors and partners in order to support the mental, physical and emotional health of medical staff so they can begin to recover from COVID-19-associated stresses and trauma.

Urgency

Expected Outcome

In Silicon Valley and other parts of the country, healthcare workers are self-isolating in hotels or apartments away from their families. They are working to protect us all, yet may feel their efforts are unappreciated or undervalued. The resulting “moral injury” is common in the healthcare field, but is magnified in a crisis like COVID-19.

Participating frontline healthcare workers will leave this intensive educational workshop with a renewed sense of purpose; tools that enable processing of grief and beginning healing; and increased knowledge on how to better care for themselves and those they serve. CME credits are provided for some workshops to fulfill required hours. The 12-month online continued-support program will offer participants the ability to further their learning and advance their education on a variety of subjects included in their training sessions on campus.

The physical demands of the job; fear and feeling of exposure; and weight of personal concerns outside of the workplace – especially related to family and loved ones – require top-ofthe-line training and supportive care during and after this global emergency, which is what Healing Our Healthcare Heroes teaches its participants.

Launch Date

Cohort Program Capacity

Training programs are slated to launch in Spring 2021. Based on funding availability, there will be multiple programs offered exclusively to healthcare providers that participants may choose to attend.

In order to adhere to strict social distancing and group gathering guidelines, each learning program cohort will be limited to 50 healthcare workers — class sizes may vary slightly based on both local and state health and safety requirements.

Eligibility

Future Vision

Healthcare professionals and frontline healthcare workers are invited to participate through a nomination process or sponsorship by their healthcare organization so long as the learning requirements of this educational program are met.

Demand will continue to mount for essential training programs that are impactful on the lives of our healthcare workers and 1440 hopes to scale this training program and curricula nationwide. See the Future Vision section for details.

The Path to Program Development AT ITS CORE, the Healing Our Healthcare Heroes education program was born as a gratitude project – one that provides frontline healthcare workers much-needed training and resources for the selfless impact that they make for others everyday. Each healthcare provider that is sponsored for this year-long healing program will benefit from thoughtful and comprehensive learning workshops tailored to critical topics that impact their health and wellbeing. In addition to the on-campus learning, participants will benefit from a full-year Online Education & Support Program to help them further their foundational knowledge from home. CME credits are available.

Program Research & Development

Part 1: On-Campus Program

Prior to establishing the curricula, 1440 initiated a research endeavor in which it interviewed physicians, nurses/nurse practitioners, advancedpractice clinicians, and respiratory therapists from New York, Boston, San Francisco, and Santa Clara counties. These frontline healthcare workers shared universal feelings and concerns that they experience, including:

Limited to just 50 healthcare providers per cohort in order maintain ample social distancing, Healing Our Healthcare Heroes program participants are invited through a nomination process or sponsorship where they will train alongside other essential healthcare and frontline medical workers and attend workshops and faculty-led content sessions focused on topics born out of significant healthcare provider concerns:

• Fear • Unprepared if they fall ill • Long-term effect of stress and trauma (Moral Injury) • Not able to properly grieve patients • Loss of Identity • Lack of self-care From these concerns, 1440 began to design an in-depth year-long training program consisting of two elements. The first is a three-day, two-night educational workshop located at the 1440 Multiversity campus in Scotts Valley, California, that includes faculty curriculum, classroom instruction, nutritional meals, and workshops. The second instructional element grants access to a 12-month Online Education & Support Program that will provide the necessary tools to help attendees deepen their personal and professional development from home. The goal of 1440 is to create comprehensive curriculum that addresses these identified needs; provide the healthcare worker access to information, skills, and tools to help prioritize care; and support their own mental health and wellbeing.

Examples of the curriculum learning tools include webinar and podcast series from accredited experts, a video series on difficult conversations, mindfulness apps to help stay centered, Healthcare Conference access, and living will assistance. 1440 will continue to develop the online curricula based on the needs that arise both from the program and global conditions that are impacting healthcare workers.

1440 Signature Classes The on-campus classroom learning program is supplemented by early morning and evening embodied movement and contemplative practices curated to help participants learn to raise their selfawareness to living a more balanced and resilient life.

Nutrition & Wellness: Foods to Optimize Immune System Function; and Adversity and Resiliency

Future Vision and Program Scalability THE GROWTH AND EXPANSION of the Healing Our Healthcare Heroes Initiative is a critical part of delivering this educational experience to frontline healthcare workers nationwide, and helping these individuals begin the process of restoring their mental and physical wellbeing though a comprehensive learning program. This program will be used as a model that can be evaluated, learned from, and scaled to reach other communities that want to help address the many concerns that healthcare workers will continue to face both short- and long-term. 1440 will advance this training by donating the model and development, which includes: • Developing the program training template with funders, healthcare systems, faculty and curricula. • Engaging with partner foundations, faculty and learning centers to collaborate around supporting other communities interested in this educational program. • Open-sourcing the Healing Our Healthcare Heroes model to other areas around the country in need of an essential comprehensive training program for frontline medical workers. While a COVID-19 vaccine is imminent and there has been some success in flattening the curve, case loads continue to mount. There will undoubtedly continue to be a long-term need for patient care as frontline workers are forced to place themselves and their families in harm’s way as the rest of the community begins to re-emerge from isolation. The need for these essential workers to take care of themselves will continue its urgency, and it is also important for healthcare workers in our communities to feel the deep gratitude of the people and organizations they serve. The goal of the Healing Our Healthcare Heroes Initiative is to build a national training program accessible to the vast community of healthcare workers in need of this learning so they can begin to cope with the burnout, grief, PTSD and other personal impacts from the COVID-19 pandemic. Healing Our Healthcare Heroes is also a pilot for a larger vision – after 1440 refines its curriculum to launch the initiative nationwide, it will work to create similar advocacy training programs for additional deserving groups of essential workers who have experienced great stresses of the job during this crisis.

I want to thank you all for taking the mental health of the frontline workers so seriously. Our providers are doing so many things well: learning about a new, very complex disease quickly; taking extraordinary care of critically ill patients; nurturing anxious families and loved ones of the patients; then soothing the anxiety of their families back home. Their own welfare is something that may be currently on the back burner. – TRAUMA SURGEON, SANTA CLARA VALLEY MEDICAL CENTER

1440 Multiversity: Our Beginning NEARLY A DECADE AGO, 1440 Multiversity co-creator Joanie Kriens was inspired while tending to and harvesting vegetables in her home garden. In that mindful moment, she was overcome by feelings of happiness, contentment, and joy – for the colorful tomatoes and squash in her basket, the quiet beauty of the land, and the preciousness of life with her family and friends. This heightened awareness and gratitude may have only lasted just a minute or two, yet it had a profound effect on Joanie. It made her wonder how many minutes there are in each day, and how we might all live more self-aware with gratitude for the simple blessings in life. After turning to Google for the answer, the 1440 name was born – little did she know she would find it in her own backyard. Following several years of philanthropic grant-making, the 1440 Multiversity campus opened in May 2017 as a learning center among the towering redwoods of the Santa Cruz Mountains. The former home of Bethany College for nearly 50 years, the campus is now a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to training and learning with an invitation to participate extended to all unbound by the range of human differences among us. While the physical aspects of social gatherings have changed in this time of crisis, our dedication to safely educating those in our community, employees and guests remains a committed passion for the 1440 Multiversity team and our faculty.

What is a Multiversity? Unlike a traditional university, which focuses primarily on intellectual learning, a multiversity is a place for holistic learning that engages not only the mind, but also the body and heart through the awakening of all aspects of ourselves. “Multi” represents the many doors and avenues of learning one will experience on their journey. “Versity” refers to the social, emotional and relational aspects of learning that we will use to shape our knowledge and build more collaborative and connected communities.

By the Numbers 75: Size in acres of the 1440 campus 300: The mile radius from campus that 1440 sources all of its produce and other foods. 775: The number of scholarships that 1440 has granted since the program’s inception in February 2019. 1,200: The estimated age in years of the Mother Tree, which is situated near the Cathedral on campus and is one of the oldest trees in the world. 100,000: Guests who have participated in learning courses on campus since opening in May 2017. 150,000: Number of honeybees that call 1440 home – two more bee colonies were added in May 2020, and each colony produces 50 pounds of honey per year that is used in a variety of 1440 recipes.

1440 Multiversity at a Glance Non-Profit: 1440 Multiversity is an operating 501(c)(3) philanthropic learning campus – all guests must be registered in a learning prorgram. Each stay at 1440 supports the educational work we do and helps award program scholarships and grants while helping fosters the 1440 vision of creating hope for living well. Each financial gift to Healing Our Healthcare Heroes in its entirety – 100 percent – will be used to support this essential training initiative. All-Inclusive: Participant training includes all meals at Kitchen Table (starting with lunch the day of check-in through lunch on check-out day), expert-led classroom sessions and all training materials so that all attendees can focus 100 percent of their attention on their learning experience without being distracted.

Essential Business Designation 1440 Multiversity has been designated as an Essential Business by the County of Santa Cruz, Office of Emergency Services. In April 2020, 1440 Multiversity and the County of Santa Cruz announced a two-part partnership to provide meals to shelters and service sites, along with establishing an Alternative Care Site. By the end of May, the 1440 Multiversity culinary team proudly and mindfully prepared nearly 40,000 shelter meals to provide individuals nourishment and housed evacuees from the wildfires in support of their health and well-being.

Home Away From Home HEALING OUR HEALTHCARE HEROES participants will benefit from a concentrated three-day, two-night immersive training workshop on campus where they are free from modern distractions and able to focus on their learning objectives. Using all the onsite resources 1440 Multiversity has to offer, program participants will be granted optimal training time and safely connect with others to feel understood, recognized and affirmed. This shared sense of belonging, combined with class time they invest in, will afford the ample amounts of healing, learning and much-needed energy to help refocus and enrich their personal and professional lives that will have a lasting impact at work, at home and in the communities in which they serve long after they leave.

Kitchen Table The heart of the 1440 campus, Kitchen Table is the dining room on campus where each participant will enjoy three nutritious meals per day. Operating with a “Food is Medicine” approach, the 1440 Multiversity culinary team works mindfully using fresh and locally sourced foods to prepare flavorful dishes for all dietary needs, including gluten-free, paleo, lactose-free, and vegan. Chefs cook with the freshest produce harvested within a 300-mile radius of campus serving only organic meats and seafood from partners dedicated to sustainable and humane practices. Dining: Food is Medicine THE HEART OF SUSTENANCE and social connection during your learning program at 1440 Multiversity is Kitchen Table. Seating at Kitchen Table has been modified both indoors and outdoors to accommodate plenty of personal space for safe social distancing. All participants campus gather here to enjoy breakfast, lunch, and dinner comprised of freshly prepared seasonal meals that include savory soups, nutritious main courses and healthy desserts. A wood-burning fireplace warmly welcomes guests at the entrance to Kitchen Table, and once inside, a variety of dining stations offer dishes topped with organic ingredients and garnishes from Joanie’s Garden on campus, plated and served by the 1440 Multiversity culinary team. Guests then choose a table in the expansive indoor dining area or al fresco overlooking the redwoods. The 1440 Multiversity culinary team – led by Executive Chef Kenny Woods – enjoys a creative approach to seasonal dining with colorful aromatic ingredients that inspire its cuisine. The 1440 Multiversity campus forager procures the freshest products from local growers, and chefs use their harvests to create wholesome, flavorful meals. The nearby Salinas Valley and city of Watsonville are known as the “Salad Bowl of the World” for the abundant produce they grow, pack and ship across the nation and abroad, and 1440 is blessed to source directly from them. The menu offerings at 1440 Multiversity were established with the notion that nutrition is a critical component for physical and emotional health and healing. With that in mind, the 1440 Multiversity culinary team operates mindfully and with a “Food is Medicine” approach, and the team and the guests it serves take comfort in seeing and knowing where these ingredients originate from. Program participants are encouraged to engage with culinary team members who are available during all meal periods to educate and teach you methods for selecting fresh ingredients and the importance of preparing nutritious meals to enhance your own health and wellness. Menus at 1440 vary daily, with gluten-free and vegan options at every meal. The principle teachings within this partnership have allowed 1440 Multiversity to implement industry-leading philosophies and best practices into its culinary work. Stringent health and safety measures are in place at Kitchen Table and across campus to ensure guest comfort; please see the Health & Safety section for details.

Kitchen Health & Safety 1440 MULTIVERSITY TAKES EXTREME CARE in its health and safety policies on campus, including in the kitchen. All meals are prepared in a kitchen that is safe, sterile, and experiences rigorous routine cleaning. • Upon arrival to campus, all culinary team members enter through one back door and move through a series of management-monitored no-touch stations to have their temperature taken, wash their hands for 25 seconds, and put on gloves and their disposable mask – all set up in order to avoid cross-contamination. Staff wear procedural or surgical masks only, which further increases the safety of one another and the recipients of each meal. • There are four kitchen zones regulated to minimize movement through cooking areas and to adhere to social distancing; once there, staff deep-clean their area before food preparation begins. Every 30 minutes a timer goes off for staff to wash their hands – staff members average washing their hands 74 times per work week. • The loading dock is accessible by management only, and the dock manager sanitizes every incoming package in a Neutral Zone established for the exchange of goods only. Incoming packages air dry for one hour before entering the kitchen, and prepared meals are placed in the Neutral Zone for the delivery team to pick up and take to their destination. • Food distribution is provided only by staff certified to handle food and beverages. Program participants are required to adhere to all mandated policies and procedures or may be denied access to service or continued program participation at 1440’s sole discretion.

Our personal relationship to our local families and businesses is what drives us still today. We appreciate and value our business with 1440 Multiversity to help the community stay safe during this time. We look forward to providing our community with as much resources as possible.
