Dear Friends of 1440, With the many demands on our time each day, often we unwittingly push aside the complex questions in our lives. We know that within those questions lie the answers to what we need to feel alive, to evolve, and to contribute in meaningful ways to our families, communities, and world. Life around us doesn’t slow down, so it’s up to us to schedule time to work on our inner fitness—to discover what matters most to us, and to nurture ourselves and our dreams so we can step courageously into each new chapter of life. 1440 Multiversity is a place for this precious kind of inquiry. Whatever is in your heart and mind—whether you need support around adopting healthier lifestyle habits, taking the next steps in your professional career, or developing stronger relationships—you can find expert faculty here guiding workshops that allow you to experiment with new tools and try on new perspectives. In this issue of our catalog, we are proud to feature 1440 Multiversity Service Week, a mission-aligned curated opportunity for leaders in the nonprofit world to develop their professional skills so they can continue to do their important work in the world (page 70). We also highlight returning guest Julianna Bootsman for her personal account of what it’s like to visit 1440 (page 50); Pete Delfino, a treasured member of our staff (page 30); and the Unreasonable Group—a global network of 175 entrepreneurs who are bending history in the right direction by positively impacting over 350 million people in more than 180 countries (page 16). With hundreds of programs to choose from and many ways to visit (page 6), we invite you to enjoy the following pages of in-depth interviews, inspirational stories, and world-class learning programs. Then, please join us for a program, for Rest & Renewal, or for a special event as a way to carve out time to be with the questions that feel most pressing to you. Warmly,

Joanie & Scott Kriens Cofounders, 1440 Multiversity & the 1440 Family

Compassionate Communities We aren’t designed to walk the journey of life alone, and we gain important new perspectives by connecting with others beyond our innermost circle. When turning our awareness to the demanding challenges and opportunities in our lives, great synergy happens here as people come together on our private 75acre redwood campus, soaking up the energy of the natural world around us and diving into the mysterious questions within. 1440 serves a diverse audience, including Silicon Valley executives, nonprofit leaders, professionals, students, millennials, retirees, couples, and groups collectively representing more than 40 countries. There are many ways to experience your 1440 minutes a day differently here, and we look forward to welcoming you. We believe that the deepest learning happens when we nurture and awaken all aspects of our authentic selves. We support people from diverse cultures, backgrounds, and generations on their personal or professional journey for conversations and educational experiences as we all rejuvenate and inspire one another. Our philosophy is to foster the discovery of a path that leads to the healthiest, happiest, and most vibrant you. The ingredients of each meal at 1440 are sourced within a 300-mile radius and freshly prepared from local farms and producers. Miles of lush forest trails, signature classes, a Fitness Center, and plenty of comfortable places to relax afford each guest the opportunity to let down their guard and make themselves at home while exploring topics with experts in fields such as relationships, leadership, creative expression, nutrition, yoga, meditation, and so much more. Dave Evans, who has more than 30 years’ experience in executive management (he's known for project managing the first mouse and early laser-printing projects at Apple) teaches a program at 1440 Multiversity called Designing Your Life Retreat (page 48) based on his wildly popular course at Stanford University.

As a contemporary entrepreneur, Dave shares the benefits of applying design thinking to what he calls life’s wicked problems, or human problems that don’t have an easy answer, for which there is no rule book and no precedent—such as designing your life. These problems are so messy you often can’t think your way out of them, instead you need to live into them by experimenting, engaging in discussions with others who aren’t like you, and receiving feedback in the lab of life called reality. 1440 is this kind of lab, a place designed for creative thinking, discovery, and new experiences. Your stay includes wholesome, freshly prepared meals, access to cafés and a lifestyle shop, a Healing Arts center with an infinity-edge hot tub, and unparalleled opportunities for learning, reflection, and movement. The campus provides the ideal setting for practicing all seven activities that longtime 1440 faculty, friend, and clinical professor of psychiatry at the UCLA School of Medicine, Dan Siegel, MD, (page 78) has proven can optimize brain health and overall well-being: connecting time, physical time, focus time, time in, down time, play time, and sleep time, with the added benefit of being surrounded by the majestic redwoods. Dave Evans and Dan Siegel are just two of the hundreds of faculty who lead programs and lectures at 1440 Multiversity. To select a program, browse the listings that start on page 36. Then visit our website for more details and to register for a program or for a Rest & Renewal getaway (page 8). Expert faculty and organizational wellness offerings are also available for corporate offsite meetings (page 14), cocreating a leadership program (page 18), and during special events for locals (page 22) where we can come together on this mysterious journey and work through life’s messy problems together. Unreasonable Group 1440 takes great pleasure in welcoming groups who share our commitment to a better world and conscious workplace. We recently welcomed Unreasonable Group and are proud to have them share why they chose 1440 Multiversity as the setting to tackle the world's toughest challenges.

At Unreasonable we want to see a world in which the most valuable and influential companies of our time are those solving humanity’s most pressing issues. We forge unlikely partnerships with some of the world’s largest institutions and most admired brands, and we operate multiple initiatives for growth-stage entrepreneurs across asset classes, industries, and geographies. Unreasonable FUTURE is an initiative that we cofounded with the Fossil Foundation, Pearson, and Accenture, with the goal of sparking a movement that ensures future generations thrive in the new economy. Though automation and the digital era are transforming jobs at an alarming rate, we believe these same technological breakthroughs can be used to enable youth and lifelong learners across all economic classes to not only participate in the jobs of the future, but to excel at them. Unreasonable FUTURE selected 1440 Multiversity as the place to assemble an ecosystem of investors, policy makers, executives, and thought leaders to scale the efforts of the 15 Unreasonable FUTURE entrepreneurs and collaboratively work on this grand challenge together based on 1440’s belief in fostering collaborative communities leading generative lives. One of the most critical elements of our gatherings is proximity to nature. Being surrounded by nature has a way of reminding us to take a breath and find a moment to recharge. The individuals who make up the community we forge at our programs are balancing a lot, both in the experience we are cocreating and in their everyday lives that they have stepped away from for a few days. The redwoods that surround 1440 were as central to the Unreasonable FUTURE experience as the more obvious things like programming and meals. We encouraged groups to have meetings or one-on-one walks among the magnificent redwoods to support deeper connection and more creative thinking. The values and vision of 1440 are closely aligned with our values at Unreasonable—everything from how the food is sourced and served, to the intentionality of the spaces and the servant culture of the team.

On top of that, the proximity to San Francisco and Silicon Valley allowed us to assemble a remarkable community for our event in a way we wouldn’t have been able to do as seamlessly elsewhere. The venue couldn’t have been better situated. It was really wonderful to collaborate with the 1440 team throughout every phase of our event. We run Unreasonable programs all over the world and are well aware that we do things a bit outside of the norm. The 1440 team rolled with all of our unique requests and did so with grace and patience. At the end of every program, we run a closing circle where the group shares gratitude to each individual in the cohort. It's intimate, powerful, emotional, and always a highlight. Over the years, our programs team has rallied to find a place that is both intimate and magical, and it's a notoriously hard thing to create. But at 1440, we simply walked into the redwoods with blankets, chairs, and drinks and huddled in a close circle under the stars. Surrounded by giant trees, we listened to the sound of the creek and the occasional owl. It was the most magical closing circle we've ever experienced. These moments bond the group for life, so we can't begin to emphasize how important this was. The entrepreneurs we brought together at 1440 are very much working at the cutting edge of what the future of work looks like, which is no small task. The space created at 1440 was incredibly powerful for every single one of them in so many ways. The forest trails, the relaxing feel that characterizes every space, the deeply nourishing food, and the proximity to the majestic redwoods reminded the entrepreneurs to breathe and be present with the group to focus on building a truly powerful community that will spark further collaboration and partnership beyond the program. 1440 gave our team and the entrepreneurs the space to inhale and recalibrate on what's really important in life, along with the energy and motivation to move forward and continue to make the world a more equitable and just place to live. For that, we'll always be grateful. To learn more visit unreasonablefuture.com

helping people drill down on their fears and insecurities

Taking time to explore the wisdom within you, what fuels you, and what you are passionate about is at the heart of the True North Leadership experience. Based on the acclaimed course developed and led by Bill George at Harvard University, this program is designed to support you in gaining clarity and insight into your life stories, crucibles, and other experiences that inform who you are today, so you can leverage what is important to you, what you love, and what your skills are to support the organizations and people you lead. As you follow your own compass in the direction of your True North, you will discover who you are as a leader and that, in turn, will inspire how you make a living, create a life, and fulfill your dreams. We value and seek perspectives that come from people of different genders, sexual orientation/identification, political affiliations, economic classes, disability, races, cultures, and other groups which are invaluable to cultivating the conditions for belonging, unity, equity, and impact in the room and beyond. Without the benefit of diverse voices, we would miss a big opportunity to create understanding and connection that could serve as a springboard for bringing teams and organizations together in new and transformative ways.

This element is important for each of us so that we can better enable civil discourse, healthy and skillful navigation through conflict, and leading through change and across global communities. As a former attorney who has worked with corporate, nonprofit, and government organizations, and as a former business leader across multiple roles, I understand what many of our participants are going through. I learned how to integrate True North Leadership principles to better align my professional and personal values and purpose, and I share approaches and frameworks that can help you succeed in this effort as well. In True North leadership, I lead the section on Introspection. Together, we focus on daily practices (such as taking another’s perspective in a conflict, pausing before reacting, and seeing similarities with another to help reduce unconscious bias) and skill sets (including mindfulness and meditation) that make a difference in not only the nature and quality of our leadership, but also in our capacity for high performance and ability to create psychologically safe work environments and sustain positive impact.

My path to meditation and mindfulness has been unfolding over several years. My earliest memory is of my great aunt introducing me to meditation during the summer I spent with her in Wyoming between first and second grade. I vividly recall her placing her hands gently on my head saying, “quiet here,” as she slowly moved her hands down to my heart while saying, “so you can be here.” Over the years, I became very familiar with what it took to run and lead teams and organizations sustainably and in healthy ways. I wanted to debunk the myth that in order for someone to win, someone has to lose. Research shows that when everyone thrives, the organization thrives. With this as my backdrop, I set about helping people drill down on their fears and insecurities and explore what it is like to step into their personal leadership power with a desire to bring people with them, instead of leaving them behind on a singular trajectory and journey to the top. This is one of the many reasons why the True North Leadership program struck such a chord with me. It teaches how we can do our inner work for meaningful outer impact.

Kitchen Table The heart of sustenance and social connection at 1440 is Kitchen Table. Guests pass by the glow of a wood-burning fireplace as they are warmly welcomed to enter and gather together at community tables inside—or al fresco overlooking the redwoods—for breakfast, lunch, and dinner to engage in conversations that matter. Mindfulness is the intention of our approach to food, which begins with how we procure our ingredients. Each week, we connect with local growers and use their harvests to create wholesome, flavorful meals (page 30). The nearby Salinas Valley and town of Watsonville are known as the “Salad Bowl of the World” for the abundant produce they grow, pack, and ship across the United States and abroad, and 1440 is blessed to source directly from them. Our seasonally-based menus change daily, with delicious gluten-free and vegan options at every meal. All produce comes from within a 300-mile radius and is offered with organic meats and seafood from partners dedicated to sustainable and humane practices. From simple fare to hearty favorites, we personally plate each meal to preserve freshness. Enjoy three meals served with the utmost care and creativity every day at Kitchen Table anytime during the following two-hour service periods. Breakfast: 7:00 – 9:00 am Lunch: 12:00 – 2:00 pm Dinner: 5:30 – 7:30 pm (Wine and beer are available for purchase with dinner.) Common Grounds café serves food and beverages à la carte from 7:00 am – 9:00 pm daily. Relax in Adirondack-style chairs on the patio or on the indoor couches. Treat yourself to house-made salads, freshly baked cookies, and gelato. Or savor a cup of local Verve coffee, spiced chai, wine, or beer outside by the fire pits.

Butternut Squash Mousse Parfait Recipe by Pastry Chef Savanah Sandate

Serves 4 • • • • • • • • • •

1 cup pureed butternut squash 1 tablespoon coconut oil 3 tablespoons maple syrup ½ teaspoon vanilla bean paste ½ teaspoon cinnamon ¼ teaspoon ginger 1⁄8 teaspoon nutmeg 1⁄8 teaspoon cardamom pinch of cloves 1⁄8 teaspoon salt

Whipped Coconut Cream • • • •

2 ½ cups coconut cream 2 tablespoons maple syrup ½ teaspoon vanilla 1⁄8 teaspoon salt

Granola • ¼ cup coconut oil • 2 tablespoons maple syrup • ¼ teaspoon vanilla bean paste • 1¼ cup rolled oats • ¾ teaspoon cinnamon • ½ teaspoon ginger • 1⁄8 teaspoon cardamom • 1⁄8 teaspoon nutmeg • ½ cup chopped hazelnuts

Butternut Squash Puree Cut a butternut squash in half lengthwise and remove the seeds. Lightly oil squash and place cut side up on a baking sheet. Roast in a 350° F oven for 25 – 35 minutes, or until the flesh is tender. Allow to cool and scoop the flesh into high-powered food processor. Blend until a smooth puree is formed. In a pan, melt coconut oil, maple syrup, and vanilla bean paste. Add puree, spices, and salt, stirring constantly over low heat until the mixture is well combined and warmed through. Set aside and allow to cool to room temperature. To speed up the process, place in refrigerator uncovered, or place in a bowl over an ice bath. Whipped Coconut Cream Place coconut cream in the refrigerator overnight to allow the cream and water to separate. In the morning, strain off excess water. Whisk together prepared coconut cream, maple syrup, vanilla, and salt in a mixer or by hand until smooth and creamy. Reserve 1 cup to use in the butternut squash mousse. Butternut Squash Mousse In a bowl combine the cooled butternut squash puree and 1 cup of the reserved whipped coconut cream. Gently fold together until combined and set aside. Granola Melt coconut oil, maple syrup, and vanilla bean paste. In a bowl combine oats, spices, and chopped hazelnuts. Pour melted coconut oil mixture over the granola and mix well. Spread mixture onto a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake at 350° F for 12 – 15 minutes or until granola is golden brown, stirring once or twice to allow for even browning. Then cool. Assembling the Parfait Spoon an even layer of granola into the bottom of a jar or bowl. Follow with a layer of butternut squash mousse, then a layer of whipped coconut cream, and another layer of butternut squash mousse. Finish with a dollop of whipped coconut cream and grate fresh nutmeg over the top. Enjoy!

Grower Direct How does grower direct impact the quality of the food we serve at 1440? Grower direct is the special way we source local, seasonal, and organic ingredients for our ever-changing menus. There are almost two million farms in the United States. About 80 percent of those are small farms, and a large percentage are family owned. Produce this fresh can be available to the public through local farmers markets and farm stands; however, at 1440, we have direct access to a wide variety of local growers because of Pete Delfino, a treasured member of the 1440 team. We call Pete our “forager” for the way he procures 100 percent of the produce, meat, poultry, fish, spices, flours, and unique ingredients that our chefs request. Pete’s story of becoming our 1440 forager speaks to the power of community, creativity, and learning— not only as necessary ingredients for providing delicious, sustainable menus, but also for restoring vitality at any age. Pete comes from a prominent local farming family who have been farmers in the area since the 1920s. His mother’s side had row crops, and many of us across the United States (and even in other parts of the world) have eaten food from their farms and the farms of their friends. Pete has seen the name of his mother’s farm on the backs of trucks in movies. On his father’s side, Pete’s father was the largest single artichoke grower in the United States. Pete’s life was farming, and after graduating from Cal Poly (California Polytechnic State University) with a major in soil science, his family’s artichoke farm sparked an idea that developed into his own renowned escargot company.

Pete noticed his family spent years trying to kill snails that they saw as pests in the artichoke fields. These snails had been brought over by the Northern Italians and French after the California Gold Rush of 1849 as a food staple. Since these weren’t the typical local snails, Pete took 20 acres of artichoke fields and began harvesting and selling the European snails. It was a win-win for the artichokes and for Pete’s new escargot business. He and his company were written up in the San Francisco Chronicle, Los Angeles Times, and California Farmer, which is the Sports Illustrated of farmer’s magazines. After many successful years as a farmer, Pete intended to retire soon. His plans unexpectedly changed once he started delivering produce to 1440. He enjoyed his growing relationships with the team here and came to appreciate the commitment we had to locally grown produce. When he heard 1440 was looking for someone to step into a procurement role, he jumped at the opportunity. His first week in the forager role, 1440 had its largest recorded crowd to date with 600 people on campus. That was 1,800 meals in one day for four days straight, and that’s how Pete took over the job. With his expertise, creativity, curiosity, and connections to the farming community, Pete brings so much passion and natural expertise to the 1440 family, and in return he feels re-energized.

In his own words: I fell in love with how innovative and creative the team and young chefs at 1440 are. There’s so much passion for this place it’s addictive. It gives me energy, and my family noticed a difference in me after one day. I was sitting in my chair upstairs and my son walked in. I said something, and he replied, “Oh, Pop’s back.” Then, my daughter came home for the weekend. And after I said one sentence to her, she said, “Oh, Pop’s back!” I asked, “What are you talking about?” She said, “You’re back to your old self again. Lately, it’s been like you were bored. Now, you sound like how you sounded years ago. You seem so happy that even your voice sounds different.” And that’s 1440. That’s why I am here. Pete tells us that the mandate of going 100 percent grower direct is a creative challenge, with new ingredients and menus every week. He feels like a little kid again with eyes wide open, ready to learn, supported by the others on the team who, he says, are there with all hands on deck, ready to make it happen. It’s our vision to be a place for compassionate communities leading generative lives, and Pete demonstrates how that looks in reality with his newfound energy and the way he connects his communities at 1440 with local growers to benefit each guest. The next time you’re savoring a meal at Kitchen Table, you might pause, admire the colors of the food, and take a mindful moment to appreciate local growers of our region and the thoughtful process of foraging that Pete does behind-the-scenes at 1440. You’ll know that a few days earlier, Pete received a list of what’s available from the growers, many of whom he grew up with. After looking over the list, he then brought it to the chefs and bakers, pointing out some of the especially unique offerings that week. Finally, the 1440 culinary team dreamt up creative menus and told Pete what to gather just in time for the new week when you’d arrive. For a recipe the team created for you to try at home, see page 28.

JULIANNA BOOTSMAN'S

A Day in the Life at 1440 Whether you come for Rest & Renewal, a program, or a group offsite, in between your scheduled sessions you will have time to explore campus, connect with other guests, and feel a sense of community where serendipitous encounters turn into inspiring, meaningful, and lasting connections. From sharing meals at Kitchen Table to walking from place-to-place along sidewalks that curve around brightly colored landscapes of local flora and grassy lawns, you’ll naturally cross paths, spend time, and share new ideas and perspectives with others. In this way, 1440 gives us the opportunity to experience firsthand the benefits of setting aside unscheduled time each day to make space for unexpected moments that could land us in conversations, experiences, and moments of pure awe that are greater than we could have planned. Returning guest Julianna Bootsman shares her story of inspiration and self-discovery, as she describes her Day in the Life at 1440.

live life at your rhythm During the program I attended at 1440 Multiversity, a seed was planted in my mind and heart that began to take root in between the program sessions. Being able to choose how to spend my free time supported deep connection and integration for me, sometimes with another guest and sometimes with myself. The natural surroundings of redwoods encouraged me to tap into my natural rhythm and break out of the rhythm constructed by society. I have a saying that when you live life at your rhythm, the world sings your song. 1440 affirms for me that more abundance, connection, and bliss is possible when I relax into an energetic flow that’s greater than myself. I fall into that flow at 1440. Things are so much easier, and connections happen that are deep, meaningful, and aligned with who I am. It leaves an imprint on me as I continue to move forward on whatever I am doing next in life. I recently came for a leadership program and stayed in a balcony suite facing the redwoods. When I woke up in the morning, I opened the patio doors, and the combination of natural light and fragrant redwoods reminded me of camping in the Rockies, where I grew up. As I walked out of the building toward breakfast (and my first cup of coffee), I passed by some larger-than-life, vibrant words on the hillside—Wonder and

Imagine—and a smile came to my face. Along the way, other guests greeted me with a kind smile. It reminded me of being in a little village with people who are open, receptive, and genuinely kind.

Time escaped us, as it does at 1440. We realized we had been in the hot tub two hours and thought we might have missed dinner. We went back to our rooms, changed, and met at Kitchen Table.

I had a morning program session, lunch, and a break before the afternoon session. In the afternoon session, something sparked in a conversation I was having with another attendee. When the session ended, I told her I hadn’t been in the infinity-edge hot tub, and we decided to meet there. Neither of us felt rushed, and as it turns out we met about an hour later without setting the time. Together, we enjoyed sitting in the tub, overlooking the redwoods, with the sun on our faces, feeling the breeze.

Every meal here feels as though it’s packaged with love. As we ate together, she shared that, based on our conversation in the hot tub, she came up with several solutions for challenges she had been expecting in the coming week. She decided not to attend the next program session of the night, instead she would digest our conversation and make space for additional revelations and benefits of self-inquiry to surface. Since then, we’ve stayed in touch, and I’m reminded of how the connections with others in between the planned sessions end up giving the greatest gifts.

During our conversation, we were able to mutually support each other. And, there was a power we could feel among those ancient trees. We both acknowledged that being immersed in nature, in connection with other people who are like-hearted and desiring the same level of exploration and discovery, we both felt a special energy. It was as if the trees were speaking to us: it felt magical. Then, I happened to turn my palms up while speaking, and something landed right in the palm of my hand. She asked if it was a piece of the redwood, and it was. I looked at this piece of bark in my hand, and we both got chills.

I attended the final session that night. Then, I went to my room, grabbed a nice warm sweater, and walked to Common Grounds café for a glass of wine. I met a few people at the fire pits, and for the next couple of hours different people came and left. At the end of the evening, as I walked back to my room, I saw the words on the hill, and this time in the dark they were all lit up. It felt as if they were wishing me good night. No Easy Answer: Dani Shapiro on Exploration and Honesty in Writing Dani Shapiro’s books include the memoirs Inheritance, Hourglass, Still Writing, Devotion, and Slow Motion, and five novels, including Black & White and Family History. Inheritance was an instant New York Times best seller. Dani’s work has appeared in numerous publications, including the New Yorker, n+1, Tin House, and Vogue, and has been widely anthologized. Along with teaching and speaking around the world, Dani is the host and creator of the Family Secrets podcast in collaboration with iHeartMedia.

1440:

You are (in part) a memoirist—which is a very particular kind of writer, as you put your life on display in your work. How does it feel to reveal yourself in writing?

Dani:

Writing memoir really comes from an impulse and an instinct to try to shape the material of my life into coherent stories that will connect with others. I certainly am aware that I reveal myself in my writing, but I don't feel exposed. Sometimes I'll joke that I didn’t publish my diary, and if you read my diary, I'd have to kill you. So much of the art of memoir has to do with what goes in and what gets left out—the crafting and shaping of a particular subject. When I sit down to write memoir, I'm not sitting down to write about my life. I'm sitting down with a question that I want to dig into and try to answer in some way. The question is always enormously personal—but it must carry the thread of the universal to feel worth writing about. In my first memoir, Slow Motion, I was compelled by one of the most difficult and painful episodes of my life—my parents' car accident when I was 23. Yet that accident also ended up becoming the thing that turned my life around.

I reveal myself in my writing 64

And I found myself wrestling with that: how could the worst moment of my life also be the transformative moment? There was also a literary instinct that led me to memoir. As a fiction writer, I felt like my work up until that point had been completely dogged by my own autobiographical material. I was writing novels and noticed that quite often a tragedy or an accident came out of the blue and impacted the protagonist. I don't think the novelist is ever really in control of her material, but I was aware that I really wasn't and I had an instinct that writing memoir would be curative for that. So, I am an accidental memoirist, and it's ironic because it is what I'm known for at this point. In my writing, I excavate and dig more so with the tool of memory than with the tools of imagination. And yet I don’t feel unduly revealed. I feel like this is just the art form that I work inside of. And yes, I walk around the world and people know a lot of facts about me—but there's also a kind of potential intimacy in that.

1440:

Dani:

You have written about the death of your parents, your fractured relationship with your mother, giving birth to a child with a near-fatal illness, and the anxieties and disappointments of marriage. Many would say these topics require enormous bravery to tackle. Do you agree? I never feel it as bravery. I feel it as necessary. I don't know how brave it is to do something that's necessary. On the other hand, I think maybe that is a definition of bravery. Writing has really saved my life. I need to be writing in order to think clearly. It's medicinal. Writing allows me to see the contents of my head and my heart and my being and my soul. It allows me to have more access to those places than I have otherwise. I don't walk around all the time with all that access. I have access when I'm quietly with the page. I still often wonder what would have happened to me if I hadn't become a writer, if I hadn't had the gift and the good fortune of being able to do this with my life. From the time I was small, I had a very powerful need to understand—to understand other people, understand the people I love, understand myself, understand the world around me. And really with everything I've ever written, when I look back later—it seems the person writing it has nothing more than a shovel and a flashlight, and the task ahead appears impossible. As I often tell my students, “It should feel impossible." Each piece of work is brand-new terrain.

1440:

How does writing about family relationships (both what we expect of them and how they actually play out) impact your behavior within those relationships?

Dani:

I would almost have to divide my answer into two parts because there's the family that I come from and the family that I have now. Writing about my father doesn’t impact my relationship with him, but in a way it deepens it because I have learned more and more about him and his history and about the nature of our relationship. My mother lived to see me become a writer, though I'm not sure that she was particularly happy about that development. And I don't think it affected my relationship with her, which was very fraught. One of the things I learned after my mom died was that it actually became harder to write about her. When she was alive, she fought back—and she was a formidable force. And in a way, writing was my only tool to understand her or to understand the nature of my relationship with her. And after she died, I felt like I was getting the last word and that it was no longer fair. It's kind of magical thinking, but it really was how it felt. In terms of the family that I've made, I never think about writing about them. I'm never taking mental notes— ever, ever, ever. I'm in the moment with my husband, or I'm in the moment with my son. Later, when it occurs to me that something might be worth exploring, I put it through my own litmus test, especially when it comes to my son. I never want him to feel exposed or embarrassed or that his privacy has been invaded. And yet, I have learned increasingly with each of my books, that the more willing I am, the more honest, the more specific, the more scared to share in a way— when I allow myself to go there—that is almost always the moment, the sentence, the paragraph, the idea that readers completely connect to. Every time. This interview was conducted by Kate Green Tripp, Managing Editor for 1440 Multiversity.

I need to be writing in order to think clearly. It’s medicinal. 1 4 4 0.O R G / R E G I S T E R

Toward a New Spirituality of Holism: A Conversation with Caroline Myss Caroline Myss is a five-time New York Times best-selling author and internationally renowned pioneer in the fields of human consciousness, spirituality and mysticism, health, energy medicine, and medical intuition.

1440:

How do you understand God at this point in your life?

Caroline: I no longer have a religious or anthropomorphic view of God. For me, God is law. God is represented in the laws of nature and the organizational system of the universe. God is both impersonal and intimate. We see the impersonal nature of God in the structure of the universe, down to the duplication of the mathematics of nature and how perfect it all is. The intimate nature of God is prayer.

1440:

This is a very different understanding of God than that of modern religions. Do you think we’re evolving toward this understanding?

Caroline: Earth-based gods are colliding now because we’ve reached the end of earth-centric religion. It’s the end of the “God-as-man” era. Abrahamic religions are fighting for the last vestiges of this mythology, but God has no religion. It’s time for the myths of religion and the politics of religion to fade away. Most of us won’t live to see this, but we are evolving into a spirituality that is organic. Our individual health and the organics of our bio-spiritual ecology are one with the bio-spiritual ecology of nature. That will be our salvation.

1440:

How did you come to have this understanding of God?

1440:

Caroline:

I came to this not from my work as a theologian, but as a medical intuitive. I first began to wonder why people don’t heal, and then eventually I wondered why people don’t want to heal. We’re becoming sicker. We’re becoming more depressed and more addicted.

Caroline: It means if I'm sick and I go to a doctor and the doctor says, “Your heart's not well. I have a medication for it, but it's going to knock the hell out of your kidneys,” then I say goodbye to that doctor. We need doctors that can treat us as a whole system. The new spiritual dictate is ecological theology; it has to be holism. We cannot adhere to a religion or medicine that is based on separation. This is why it’s time for religions to begin to evaporate.

I realized that these illnesses were actually soul illnesses—spiritual crises—and the language that people needed, the holy language of prayer, simply was not available. We had dismantled the route to the soul so successfully that people didn’t even know there was such a thing as a spiritual crisis anymore, so they had no option but to say they had a psychological crisis.

1440:

How does this play out on a practical level with our health?

Is there anything useful from religion that we can keep?

Caroline: We can retain the mystical teachings because they are not about separation or the politics of God, which is what religion is. Mystical teachings are fundamentally about the laws of the universe. The laws of men have to go—the laws of the universe are what will be retained.

Guidance is around all the time, in every single thing.

1440:

We’ve traditionally turned to religious leaders for spiritual guidance. Where will we look for guidance in this new model?

Caroline: The soul is deep, profound, and rigorous, and it brings you to truth. It does not bring you to your history so you can figure out who hurt you. It is not a journey of discovering how to get even with others. It is a journey of how to discover why you want to get even, why you want to hurt others, why you are unforgiving. It's a journey of excavation of why you sabotage your health. This is where prayer comes in. And it’s why no one should go into the soul unescorted. If you go unescorted, you will never heal. You need a spiritual director and companions to help you along the way. Spiritual directors will be the new priests. We still need the sacraments. We do not fare well without confession. 1440:

Are there other practices that have the same effect as prayer?

Caroline: I’m all for holy listening. Holy listening is a way of relaxing, of releasing the debris and waiting to hear God. It’s not a practice; it’s a devotion. It’s a devotion because you make a vow that says you’ll show up in holy listening and wait.

Caroline:

You wait and you wait and you get over that childish, egocentric entitlement that says because you’ve showed up you expect to hear something. Expect nothing. God is everywhere, but most of you are blind as a bat. Guidance is around all the time, in every single thing, not just when things “work out.” How do you know if things are working out? Remember, you’re looking through a tiny lens. You don’t see what’s coming, you don’t see what’s gone, you don’t see the influences of other people. How do you know what’s supposed to be happening? Everything is being worked in a grand, huge, eternal alchemy that is constantly unfolding. The hand of God is in every single second, every single breath, and that’s how you have to think. You have to shave down your expectations and appreciate absolutely everything. You have to realize the power of a smile or an act of kindness generates so much force in the world. That’s God in the world.
