WINTER/SPRING 2020
A LE ARN IN G DES T INAT IO N WH ERE ENERGY, D ISCOVE RY, A ND CREAT IVIT Y F LO URIS H SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, CALIFORNIA
Dear Friends, As the winter months are upon us, and the holiday rush is behind us, we hope you will make time to reflect on the past year. Time and memories seem to fit in categories of good and bad. This year, could we allow our experiences to be just as they are: a thread of the fabric woven into the cozy blanket we each have an opportunity to sew in our life? Learning and growing as each day unfolds brings an opportunity to lean into feelings and thoughts. May we give ourselves permission to sit with ourselves and learn to love and trust that person that lives within: the kind, messy, joyful, confused, hopeful, and energetic self. Through it all, if we listen to ourselves with the same compassionate awareness that we extend to our dearest friends and loved ones, then perhaps last year’s learnings could become inspiration for what we wish to give, who we wish to be, and what we wish to create in the year ahead. This is our work not only for this year, but for each of the minutes, hours, and days we have. If you would like support in a place where these types of learnings, discoveries, and inquiries are possible, please join us at 1440 Multiversity. Among these ancient redwoods, you can experience a sense of calm, open a clearer connection to your intuition, and gain insight into what’s most important to you. Warmly,
Joanie & Scott Kriens Cocreators, 1440 Multiversity & the 1440 Family

Where Creativity Flourishes Ancient evidence illustrates that creativity has always been at the heart of our existence and seems to be an expression of the very energy of being alive. At 1440 we offer signature classes, 5-day programs, weekend workshops, and private events that nurture creativity as a doorway to authentic self-expression and provoke dialogue that expands our awareness, leading to greater personal and professional fulfillment. Artistry combines with function in the campus design. From handcrafted, curved railings to the outdoor sculptures and mural to a waterfall that recycles captured rainwater, and so much more, the care for every detail on these 75 acres among the redwoods inspires creative thinking at every turn.
men uses creativity, including theater and music, to encourage them to participate in life, giving them a chance to broaden their horizons, build character, and know their contributions will be valued.
Creative Connections Like Ashanti, many guests form deep connections at 1440 that last beyond their time here and develop into partnerships for new projects. In collaboration, they each further their missions and widen the circles of their communities. Samin Nosrat, author of the James Beard award-winning New York Times best seller Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat and a Netflix original documentary series of the same name, tells us about the creative benefits of gathering in person with others at 1440:
Why Creative Arts? Cartoonist, educator, and 2019 MacArthur “genius” fellow Lynda Barry, who will be part of a stellar lineup of visiting faculty here for The BOX Sessions™ (page 50), has said: There’s a reason to engage with the arts that’s so much more than if you made a good picture or you didn’t. I think it has to do with this feeling of being alive and that life is worth living. Ashanti Branch, founder and executive director of the Ever Forward Club in Oakland, agrees. He first stayed at 1440 as a guest of Service Week, a mission-aligned program hosted by 1440 for leaders of nonprofit organizations to develop their professional skills and business acumen. During that program, Ashanti built a collaborative relationship with another guest to create the Ever Forward Summer Arts Experience (page 22). For Ashanti, the driving question of this creative experience for young men who are at risk of dropping out of high school is, “You matter—how do we help you to recognize you matter? Once you believe it, you’ll want something more out of your life.” In imaginative ways, Ashanti’s program for young

I think there are so many things you cannot do digitally, that can’t be quantified. The chance encounters that happen at the dinner table or while you are in line to get your food. You never know who you are going to bump into. And you never know what story someone is going to tell. There is a serendipity you can’t get online. (page 46) We often hear that kind of serendipity seems magical at 1440. Jeff Harbach, president and CEO of Kauffman Fellows, recounts a story of a casual meeting between fellows during an off-site leadership module held at 1440 that led to a meaningful business venture (page 16). There is a like-hearted approach among those who meet and learn at 1440 Multiversity that increases the possibility of this kind of serendipity. Whether you book a private organizational event, come for a program expressly in creativity, or take any of our hundreds of programs centered on leadership, nutrition, relationships, and more, our hope is that you will tap into a newfound creative energy and enthusiasm for contributing to the world in your own unique way.

Kauffman Fellows at 1440 As a mission-driven nonprofit, 1440 takes great pleasure in welcoming groups who share our commitment to a better world and conscious workplace. We recently welcomed Kauffman Fellows and are honored to have them share why they chose 1440 Multiversity as the setting for their important work.
Kauffman Fellows is one of the most powerful and widely connected groups of venture capitalists and innovation leaders in the world. Their fellowship program spans two years with fellows and mentors from 50 different countries. Jeff Harbach, president and CEO, spoke to us about his experience hosting their largest annual leadership module at 1440 Multiversity last June.
1440: Jeff:
Tell us about Kauffman Fellows and the leadership module you hosted at 1440. Kauffman Fellows is a behavioral fitness program focused on helping individuals become the best versions of themselves so they can support entrepreneurs in new and innovative ways that help them grow their businesses. The fellowship is a two-year program with seven modules and two international summits. Each June a new class begins their fellowship. At this event we bring them together with the class starting their second year and the class who will graduate. It’s our biggest event of the year other than our international summit, and the graduation is intimate and emotional.
1440: Jeff:
What happens during this module? Kauffman Fellows, from all over the world, participate in a series of exercises through which they become very open, vulnerable, and transparent with each other. They build trust quickly during this module. New fellows are divided into small groups, their forum for the two years. That forum becomes their trusted expert network in both their professional and personal spheres of life. It becomes their accountability group, their support group, and their group that celebrates life's wins and mourns life’s tough times.
1440:
Photos by Chris Hurtt Photography
Jeff:
when that moment of inspiration is going to happen for someone—whether it’s while walking along the trails, while being served your personally plated meal, or anywhere else throughout the property. We love that thought. We tell our fellows the same thing: you never know when the inspiration will hit you, so it’s important to be ready to receive it. 1440:
Have you heard any stories from the fellows about how their time here helped create relationships that support them in furthering their work in the world?
Jeff:
Two fellows from different classes met by chance when a bunch of the fellows were together enjoying the grounds of 1440. Due to the nature of your campus, these fellows had an opportunity to connect in a much deeper way than in more traditional settings. One of them was an LP and one was a GP, and it turned out that the LP ended up investing in that GP’s funds. While perhaps they could have met in another module, the fact is that they were in this environment where they weren’t all going out to different venues for dinner or drinks and they were able to meet in a serendipitous moment perfectly set up by 1440. The GP told me, “That was one of my LPs, that was huge for me.”
Why did you choose 1440?
Fellows continue to tell me about what an amazing experience it was, the breathtaking atmosphere in the Sanctuary for graduation, and that they hope we will return.
We chose 1440 because it’s so directly aligned with what we want the spirit of our event to be. Scott Kriens, cocreator of 1440, believes in what our fellowship enables: real, authentic conversations that matter. That’s what we do with all our different interactions in Kauffman Fellows, and that’s what 1440 is about.
As we think about helping these fellows go on a journey of becoming the best versions of themselves—which starts with taking a very deep look into themselves and becoming much more selfaware—we want them to be in a place where they can focus on helping each other and connecting in a deep way.
Before planning to host the module at 1440, we had been to 1440 for an off-site. At that time, Scott spoke to our team and told us about the meticulous attention that is paid to all 75 acres of 1440’s campus, every single square foot, because you never know
Because 1440’s campus feels private and secluded, it creates this magic bubble for meaningful connection. To learn more visit kauffmanfellows.org

A New Model of Mentorship for At-Risk Boys Ashanti Branch, MEd, founder and executive director of the growing nonprofit the Ever Forward Club for boys, develops new ways to engage at-risk youth, inspiring them to stay in school, realize their voices matter, and believe they can become role models in their communities. Recently, Ashanti launched the Ever Forward Summer Arts Experience, which included a special talk with Wynton Marsalis, an open rehearsal at the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music, and a rehearsal and performance of The Comedy of Errors by Santa Cruz Shakespeare. It was our pleasure to partner with Ashanti by offering 1440 signature classes, nourishing meals, and pod-style living on our campus to his group for the three nights of this remarkable program. Creative Leaders Meet at 1440 The idea for the Summer Arts Experience began during the first Service Week at 1440, in 2017. Service Week is a unique campus-wide program designed for teams from nonprofit organizations. Nonprofit employees, board members, and stakeholders are invited to apply for this week of free, best-in-class professional development underwritten and hosted by 1440. Service Week guests have time to connect, share ideas, and expand their reach in between workshop sessions, which is when Ellen Primack, executive director of the Cabrillo Festival, approached Ashanti. She asked if he’d like to bring a group of his boys to the festival, which hosts renowned artists from around the world. From that moment on, Ellen and Ashanti collaborated on the Summer Arts Experience for 2019, with 1440 and Aimee Zygmonski, managing director at Santa Cruz Shakespeare. Words of Wisdom Of the whole experience, Ashanti says the most telling part was at the end when the boys said, “I don’t want to go back yet.” Ashanti believes
they found comfort here, so he reminded them, “Ever Forward was created to show how learning can be fun. And, if you work hard, then amazing opportunities will come your way." Important takeaways occurred throughout the weekend, including in 1440’s signature improv class when the group experienced new ways of collaboration and communication, and in the talk with Wynton Marsalis who encouraged them to pay close attention to the music they listen to—to really listen to the words and ask themselves is it uplifting in any way, and how much are they investing in what goes into their ears that can uplift them? Any Moment Could Be the One Any of us can attend a workshop, create a career that aligns with our values, and even take daily walks outside, seeking invaluable inspiration, but we can’t know which moment will contain a sound bite of wisdom or bring a new person, perspective, or joy into our life in a way that will change the course of a project, a relationship, or a life. These moments catalyze inner evolution and growth, rejuvenate us, and give us hope when we feel stuck. Ashanti created the Ever Forward Summer Arts Experience for at-risk boys with all this in mind. His goal is to give them a variety of new experiences trusting they will get something they need, and they will have evidence that people see and support them. Ashanti says, “If you know that you have people that look up to you, people who want to support you, and that you mean something to them, then it’s harder to want to do nothing. If you are here with us in this club, then you can’t say that you don’t have someone who wanted to support you.” With deep gratitude to all the partners, Ashanti says the Ever Forward Summer Arts Experience is going to change those lives, and he looks forward to doing it again. Kitchen Table The heart of sustenance and social connection at 1440 Multiversity is Kitchen Table. All guests on campus regardless of their program gather in this 450-seat community dining space for breakfast, lunch, and dinner to enjoy freshly prepared seasonal meals that include savory soups, delicious simple-fare options, hearty main courses, and sweet desserts at dinnertime. At the entrance to Kitchen Table, a wood-burning fireplace warmly welcomes you. Once inside, choose from a variety of dining stations offering dishes topped with ingredients and garnishes from Joanie’s organic garden on campus. Then, sit with other guests at community tables inside or al fresco overlooking the redwoods for casual conversations perhaps over a glass of wine in the evening. You won’t find a more creative approach to seasonal dining than among the abundant and colorful aromatic ingredients that inspire our cuisine. Each week our forager procures the freshest products from local growers, and our chefs use their harvests to create wholesome, flavorful meals. The nearby Salinas Valley and town of Watsonville are known as the “Salad Bowl of the World” for the abundant produce they grow, pack, and ship across the nation and abroad, and 1440 is blessed to source directly from them—taste the freshness for yourself! Menus at 1440 vary daily, with delicious gluten-free and vegan options at every meal. All produce is sourced from within a 300mile radius and often paired with organic meats and seafood from partners dedicated to sustainable and humane practices. From simple fare to wholesome favorites, we personally plate each meal to preserve freshness—it is our pleasure to surprise you every day with cuisine that is as innovative as it is nourishing. Try unique and delicious recipes that you can serve at home. 1440 Mixologist Joey Driussi created three special sake cocktail recipes for you, using seasonal ingredients. Impress your guests or turn any meal into a special occasion; see page 28. For operational hours, please see page 32.

Fragrant Festive Cocktails Recipes by Mixologist Joey Driussi
Fig & Ginger Shrub Margarita
Black Currant Old-Fashioned
Pair this cocktail with savory barbecued surf and turf.
Pair with a savory dish or favorite dessert.
Yield: 2 Cocktails
Yield: 1 Cocktail
1 cup granulated sugar
1 cup black currants (or 2 ounces of black currant juice)
1 ¼ cup apple cider vinegar
2 dashes Angostura bitters
4 cups diced fresh figs (about 15 figs)
2 dashes Australian bitters
¾ cup peeled ginger
¼ cup sliced ginger
10 ounces sake
5 ounces sake
2 ounces lime juice splash of orange juice honey and salt for rimming Fig & Ginger Shrub Combine the sugar, apple cider vinegar, diced figs, and peeled ginger. Mix well and store covered overnight; stir occasionally. Double strain through a mesh sieve to discard the large pulpy material. Depending on the size of the sieve, you may have leftover fig seeds in your creation. This is okay as the seeds don’t add an off-putting texture or taste.
The Cocktail Combine all ingredients and allow to sit overnight, occasionally agitating the mixture. When ready to serve, strain all ingredients and pour over ice.
Asian Pear & Apple Sangria Sip on one of these while serving hors d’oeuvres. Yield: 4 – 8 Cocktails 1 bottle of your favorite dry white wine 3 tablespoons brown sugar
The Cocktail
2 Asian pears thinly cut longways
Add fig & ginger shrub, sake, and lime and orange juice. Shake or stir. Rim your glasses with honey and dip into salt for an added sweet-salty combo. Pour over ice and enjoy.
1 medium Granny Smith apple sliced 1 small orange 4 – 8 rosemary sprigs 1 bottle dry hard cider The Cocktail Pour white wine into large pitcher or decanter. Slowly stir in the brown sugar, until dissolved. Add Asian pear slices, apple, and orange. Stir gently and refrigerate for several hours before serving. To serve, place a sprig of rosemary into each wine glass, then add sangria. Top with hard cider for added booze and bubbles.

All will learn to eat and live more mindfully and more healthfully.
Optimal Health Starts in Our Kitchens Imagine a national healthcare system which includes and supports access to classes that teach healthy habits proven to prevent, manage, and, in some instances, reverse chronic disease—centered on the inherent medicinal value of delicious, whole food. This aspirational reality is around the corner. On April 22 – 23, the 2020 Research Conference on Teaching Kitchens and Related Self-Care Practices will be led by David Eisenberg, MD, director of culinary nutrition within the Department of Nutrition at Harvard. Dr. Eisenberg is also the director of the Teaching Kitchen Collaborative (TKC), a group of 39 organizations with teaching kitchens, intended to establish and evaluate best practices relating to the design, implementation, and evaluation of teaching kitchens to be used as “learning laboratories” and translational research hubs. For two full days on 1440’s serene and state-of-the-art campus in the redwoods, near the bustling cities of San Jose and San Francisco, participants will experience original research presentations, poster sessions, plenaries, and breakout sessions. Researchers from the United States and the international community, along with junior researchers (e.g., students and postdoctoral fellows), can submit abstracts and proposals for panel discussions until January 15, and guests with general interest and careers in healthcare, education, mindfulness, cooking, exercise, and
behavior change are encouraged to attend. (See page 75 for more information.)
Teaching a Wider Population to “Eat, Cook, Move, and Think Better”
Reversing Disease, Promoting Health
The primary areas of focus for the upcoming conference at 1440 will include:
We are now witnessing a rise in obesity, chronic illness, and diabetes in epidemic proportions. Three quarters of US adults are overweight or obese, and 60 percent of today’s toddlers will likely be obese by age 35 if we do not change the status quo. Evidence is beginning to demonstrate that when people learn to choose and cook delicious, nourishing meals; to move more; to live more mindfully; and to change unhealthy habits, that can lead to important and sustainable changes in behaviors, health outcomes, and costs—with none of the side effects of medications.
• • • •
Best Practices Research Methods Scalability Optimal Use of Information Technology (IT) • Demonstration Projects to • Establish Evidence of Clinical and Cost-Effectiveness Dr. Eisenberg envisions teaching kitchens as ubiquitous fixtures in hospitals, schools, worksites, and community spaces of the future.
In teaching kitchens across a range of hospitals, medical schools, universities, K-12 schools, corporations, and Veteran’s hospitals, nutritionists, registered dieticians, doctors, and other qualified health practitioners provide instruction and support for patients and other populations to learn to make better food choices, to cook and portion delicious meals, and to move and think more healthfully.
“Teaching people to eat, cook, move, and think better is something we can teach any group. While most will enter with a desire to learn to cook better, all will learn to eat and live more mindfully and more healthfully,” Dr. Eisenberg reminds us.
With this is mind, Dr. Eisenberg proposed 1440 as the TKC’s ideal location for its international research conference. While here, presenters and guests can visit 1440’s teaching kitchen and garden, walk the redwood trails, take signature wellness classes, and dine together over locally sourced and remarkably delicious meals.
Read our interview with Dr. Eisenberg at 1440.org/food
Together, let’s usher in the era of our country’s best and most sustainable healthcare—starting in our kitchens.

Creativity & Resilience: A Conversation Between Samin Nosrat & Laura Holson
Samin Nosrat is a celebrated chef, speaker, and food columnist for The New York Times Magazine. Her James Beard awardwinning best seller, Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat, was adapted into a popular documentary series on Netflix. Samin learned to cook at Alice Waters’ famed Chez Panisse in Berkeley. Here she is interviewed by Laura Holson, a writer for the New York Times and the founder and host of The BOX Sessions™, an upcoming program at 1440.

One of the great joys for me is to intertwine my different interests. Laura:
You originally wanted to be a poet. I’ve heard you say, though, that cooking is another form of storytelling.
Samin:
Cooking itself is a craft, much like the craft of writing. And both involve a lot of practice and discipline. That is the only way you are going to get better at it. As a young cook I never gave up hope that I would be able to write one day. All these bright young people come to me, students at Ivy League schools, and they say, “I want to cook.” I say, “Okay, listen. If you are going to be a career cook, don’t let go of the other stuff. Make sure you always keep another interest alive.” One of the great joys for me is to intertwine my different interests.
Laura:
You talk a lot about how the dinner table is an important place to share ideas. What does being together for a weekend provide that watching a talk online doesn’t?
Samin:
I think there are so many things you cannot do digitally, that can’t be quantified. The chance encounters that happen at the dinner table or while you are in line to get your food. You never know who you are going to bump into. And you never know what story someone is going to tell. There is a serendipity you can’t get online.
Laura:
48
A lot of people don’t know you worked hard for 20 years before the success of the cookbook and the Netflix series, Salt Fat Acid Heat. What did that teach you about resilience?

Samin:
I wish I had a tidy answer for this. Someone who interviewed me 10 or so years ago pointed that out. I kept telling her about all my failures and she said, “Wow. You are really resilient.” And I had never thought of that word to describe myself. But when she said it, I said, “You’re right! I am!” I’m the queen of not giving up when it comes to things I want to do and achieve. Failure is just part of the process. Certainly, looking back, a lot of things I thought of as soul crushing endings were just revisions to a plan. There were two books I didn’t get to write. And thank goodness! It wasn’t the thing in my heart. I think we as a culture are so susceptible to feeling that failing is an ending. It’s some sort of value judgment about us. But it’s just a mistake. Keep going. I watch a lot of friends who I think are really beautiful and skillful and powerful and smart, who feel like something not working out is some sort of sign that they are not good enough. You just have to suck it up and try again.
Laura:
Were you surprised with the success of the Netflix series?
Samin:
I think I would have had to have been a megalomaniac to have not been surprised! The entire time we were making the show, the ultimate thing I wanted to do was get people to cook. And I am really proud that has happened.
Laura:
What did cooking with your mother teach you?
Samin:
When I was little my mother didn’t let me and my brothers into the kitchen. She wanted us to do our homework and succeed at school. But everyone in my family eats. And my mother spent 40 percent of my childhood grocery shopping. I come from a cooking philosophy that focuses on sourcing. An important part of my cooking is finding ingredients and searching for a “taste.” I didn’t realize then what my mother was giving me. But she was preparing me to be a cook at Chez Panisse. I’d grown up with all of these herbs and spices that people are only now discovering. I have a really good palate for acidity because that was how my mom cooked. And certainly, there was the importance of sitting around a table and making it the center of family life. That is what she instilled in me.
Laura:
You said once that the beautiful thing about cooking is there is always tomorrow.
Samin:
Even if you made the best thing you have ever made, tomorrow is a new day and you have to go again. Or if you make the worst thing, tomorrow is a new day! There is not really a chance to sit around and sulk or be like, “I’m a genius. I invented the best thing.” You just have to keep going.
Laura:
So what are you going to cook tomorrow? And how will it be different than today?
Samin:
Oh! Good question! Cooking is all about the moment because, today, I might be alone. Tomorrow there might be people here. A friend delivered 60 pounds of tomatoes to me. I shared a bunch of them. And I am working my way through the rest, which I am going to turn into sauce. Every single day those tomatoes are going to be different. They will continue to ripen. So while they may be delicious for a salad one day, the next day they are going to be for sauce or roasting. And the only way to know is to taste and be totally present in the moment.
Laura:
That sounds like a life lesson!
Samin:
Right?!

DAR L A ANDE R S O N' S
A Day in the Life at 1440 Darla Anderson, the Oscar-winning producer of the animated films Coco and Toy Story 3, was a guest in a weekend program led by renowned poet and philosopher Mark Nepo. Darla, a prolific artist and producer who signed a multi-year development deal with Netflix, has returned to 1440 as a guest in several programs. We’re thrilled to share the following conversation we had together about her time on campus. Next up with Darla: we can’t wait to welcome her—this time as a presenter—for The BOX Sessions™, a weekend of workshops and conversations with award-winning creatives that you won’t want to miss (page 50).

These are moments of awe. 1440:
What brought you to 1440 the first time?
Darla:
I had retired a few weeks earlier and was looking for a last-minute getaway. I spontaneously drove down to 1440 from San Francisco with just a couple of days’ notice, and I randomly picked the Mark Nepo program.
1440:
What were your first impressions of the campus?
Darla:
After a beautiful drive from San Francisco, I instantly felt at home on the campus. It’s gorgeous among the redwoods. Because I had decided on this trip so last minute, I ended up in a small room with a shared bathroom. It was perfect for me. I like being alone, and I like traveling alone. Still, I never felt lonely. The environment and the buildings are so beautiful, and the energy of the people that work here and those who were taking the classes is great. There were about 50 people in the class. And I just fell in love with Mark, the class content, the group of people, and the space that he held. Honestly, for me it was life-shifting. I shifted my perspective on so many things.
60
1440:
What prompted you to shift your perspective?
Darla:
Because I had gone so spontaneously, I hadn’t read Mark’s books ahead of time. I didn’t know that much about him, which I think was probably not true about most people in the class because he is well-known. As he read his poetry and prose it was all brand-new for me. There’s something so cool about hearing it for the first time in person with him, and I would think that would be true for anybody; if I had gone to a Mary Oliver lecture, not knowing who she was, and she had started reading her poetry, I would have been blown away by what she did. That’s how I felt with Mark. It’s like discovering something for the first time. It reminds me of when I’ve seen something in the wild, like a bald eagle, for the first time. These are moments of awe.

1440:
When you came to 1440, did you have expectations?
Darla:
I didn’t have any expectations at all. I tend to live my life that way. I didn’t even know what to expect, and maybe that’s what made it even better. A lot of the weekends when I’ve been at 1440, a lot of people have come alone, and we would either hang out by the campfire or after meditation in the morning. And in the dining hall, we’d end up sitting with strangers and strike up all kinds of interesting conversations with people in our own program and in other programs. I’ve made friends and connections in each program I’ve attended, and we have this shared experience of this completely unique, inspiring moment that we all shared together.
1440:
Why spend time in the presence of presenters like Mark Nepo, instead of only reading their books at home?
Darla:
We’re human beings on this planet and one of the many things we get to do is experience life in community. I make a living by making art by way of film—yes you can watch my films on iPhones and at home on your TV, and that’s wonderful. It’s also so great to watch films in the theater and have a shared experience. For my last film Coco, it’s great to be in a shared experience where every audience is so unique, and every shared human experience is its own thumbprint. Each shared experience is, in and of itself, only that moment, only that now, you can never replicate it. And that’s what storytelling is, that’s what art is. To come to 1440 and to be in a classroom with somebody like Mark Nepo, it’s this wonderful communal experience where you share this energy in the room that you are part of creating, you are part of this community now.
Why do we have funerals, why do we have weddings, why today are we marching in the street together to try to save the planet? Why is it so great to go to a concert and listen to music with other people? It’s important because we crave connection, community, and shared experience. You can record it, in the moment, but we all know it doesn’t quite capture at all the experience. It represents it. We try to give people a window into it on video or with photos, but they don’t really capture that moment of majestic presence in whatever situation we’ve been in. Mark Nepo’s program was like that and so was Brave Magic with Elizabeth Gilbert and Cheryl Strayed. Liz and Cheryl are so in tune with each other. They were so spontaneous as they moved with the emotions of the group, brought people up on stage, and reacted in such a beautiful, spontaneous way that can only happen because of what unfolds in real time. They weren’t reading off any paper, and because they were going with the flow it was so emotionally satisfying. 1440:
What would you tell guests who are thinking about attending a workshop in creativity at 1440?
Darla:
The Brave Magic program had nothing really to do with the principles or process of writing, as in “here’s how you write.” It had more to do with the question, “what is your life like?” Mark Nepo, Elizabeth Gilbert, Cheryl Strayed, and Martha Beck—whose program I also attended— express themselves each in their own ways. And even if they agree on the same tenets of creative expression and how to get there, which includes spending a lot of time listening to yourself, they all are extremely unique. It’s moving to be in the room, hearing them earnestly trying to help. They’re all in. It seems like they can’t not be all in, it’s who they are as individuals. You sincerely feel that. Any of these practices can be part of how we try to balance and heal ourselves. 1440: Jeff:
How do you define meditation? At the most fundamental level, meditation is becoming awake. It’s about taking the time to get to know ourselves. This can happen on the meditation cushion or in other ways that together constitute what I call practice. Practice is about becoming awake to the fact that you have particular habits and patterns. As you start to see them and have more self-understanding, self-insight, and self-knowledge, you can begin to develop more space and freedom around the parts of you that are hard or that you want to change. You can begin to make small calibrations in those patterns to take you toward a healthier and more fulfilling way of existing that you instinctively know is possible. Ultimately, practice is about taking responsibility for your own stewardship of yourself.
1440:
What kind of things are included under the larger umbrella of “practice”?
Jeff:
The skills you develop in meditation I think of as upstream from all the other skills. In seated meditation you develop concentration (the ability to direct your attention), equanimity (the capacity to be with whatever is happening), and insight (the ability to get clear). Sitting meditation is explicitly about building these simple skills, so there’s incredible value in it.
78
Beyond that, there are many other practices that help you develop these fundamentals, each one typically emphasizing one of these skills over the other. There are shamanic practices, body practices, martial arts practices, sports practices, creative practices, arts practices, psycho-therapeutic practices, somatic practices—the list goes on. The forms change, but the core skills are always there somewhere. Any of these practices can be part of how we try to balance and heal ourselves.

1440: Jeff:
It sounds like there’s a lot of room for us to be creative in designing our own practice. The single most creative thing we have to do in our life is our life. How do we distribute the care and love we have to give to ourselves and others? How do we configure a life of intentional practice without it becoming oppressive, like an endless “to do” list? We can remix our reality like a DJ. What do you already do that quickens your pulse and makes you feel alive and connected? Whatever that is, that’s your practice already. It’s there staring you in the face. You don’t have to just sit with your eyes closed alone in your house. Take what you learn on the cushion into whatever it is that gives you joy and enlivens you—connecting to people, creating art, doing a physical practice, or whatever it is. Do the experiment for yourself. You’re the only one who can tell you whether you’re fooling yourself or if it’s really working.
1440: Jeff:
Where would someone start if they wanted to begin meditating? Start incredibly simply. Don’t make a big deal about it. Just sit anywhere and see if you can be okay with whatever is going on. You don’t have to know right out of the gate if you’re doing a concentration practice or an open awareness practice or whatever—you can keep it simpler than that. Just sit and be with what’s going on. This will develop equanimity, but you don’t even need to know that. And if it’s hard to just sit and be okay with what happens, you can lightly focus on the breath or on sounds. Eventually you can move into concentration practices and insight practices where you notice habits and patterns, but you don’t need to start there. Start on the wide end of the funnel. I’d also recommend finding a community to sit with or an accountability buddy to help you stay on track. Apps are great too.
1440: Jeff:
It can help to think of meditation as both an exploration and a training. As we practice, we’re learning who we are and in the act of looking at that, we change ourselves. It’s a paradox. Some people will take to it as a training because they like discipline. Others will think it feels too much like forcing themselves to eat their vegetables and will emphasize the exploratory side. Either way, the point is for you to learn about you. Learning how your thought processes work, what the body is doing, what it means to get out of your head and into your body—these things will change your life. And that will not only help you, but it will simultaneously radiate out into your family, your community, your work—everywhere. This interview was conducted on behalf of 1440 Multiversity by Jenn Brown, a freelance writer and editor.
What if someone just doesn’t like sitting still and meditation feels torturous? I have ADD and co-wrote a book called Meditation for Fidgety Skeptics, so I know how hard this can be! But I think all of us need to learn to be able to sit still with ourselves. We have to confront our restlessness. If you really can’t do it at first, start with a slow movement practice like qigong or tai chi. Then when you develop enough presence and skill from that, let it settle down into a stillness practice. That doesn’t necessarily mean sitting in silent meditation. You might sit on the porch or on a bench or on a rock in the woods and just be with yourself and be okay for 10 minutes. And then maybe you can move into a more specific practice—there are so many options available.
