Dear Friend, After crossing the bridge to enter campus, you can’t miss Joanie’s Garden. It’s a favorite place to meander and lose track of time among fragrant herbs, edible flowers, and heirloom fruits. Spot something ripe enough to eat? Help yourself! And as you savor the veritable garden-to-mouth treat, your experience will be reminiscent of how 1440 got its name. That part of 1440’s history is affectionately known as The Garden Story. When cofounders Joanie and Scott Kriens sat down to brainstorm names for their foundation (the namesake of 1440 Multiversity), nothing they came up with felt quite right. So, Joanie went into her backyard garden for a peaceful break and to clear her mind. It was there, nestled among the crisp leaves, winged ladybugs, and ripening fruits and vegetables, that she picked a sun-warmed cherry tomato. Unbeknownst to her, it was that single tomato that would be the start of a very big moment. Because when she popped that tiny piece of summer fruit into her mouth, she experienced a larger than life moment of bliss—a moment of truly being in the moment. Her curiosity was sparked. How many moments like this are available to us each day? When she returned to the house and looked it up, she discovered that we have 1440 of them. And the rest is, well, history. In our busy world, perhaps it’s a silver lining to know that we have 1440 minutes available to us each day—moments to connect with nature, each other, and ourselves. 1440 opportunities to experience the oneness with all that is. During the fall and upcoming holidays, we hope you will have memorable moments such as this throughout your daily life as well as here with us among the redwoods. Warmly, Your Friends at 1440 Multiversity

Writing as Therapy, Meditation & Self-Inquiry:

Alexandra Elle is an author and poet living in the Washington, DC, metro area with her husband and daughter. In her preteen years, Alex started writing as a form of therapy and healing. Many years later, Alex shares her voice and words across the globe to millions who revel in her dynamic and radical selflove and self-care.

An Interview with Alexandra Elle

1440: How did you first discover writing? Alex: As a child, I was sad and depressed. I came across writing through therapy, and it just stuck. I didn't have the words or the language to describe my feelings, so writing was the best way for me to get the words out and get the feelings out. I turned to poetry and used that as my outlet.

The therapist who introduced me to writing as a way to healing was Ms. Bedelia, and she gave me the metaphor that we were making me an imaginary toolbox. In that toolbox, I could have things that would comfort me and help me selfsoothe—using my journal was one of the main tools.

I'd always loved writing. English was always my favorite subject in school. The creative writing portion was something I gravitated to, especially poetry. Being able to lean into that subject from a personal perspective and not just from an educationbased or curriculum-based place was great. I found my voice once I was given the permission to have that tool in my toolbox.

1440: How did you make the transition from writing being personal to it being something you share publicly? Alex: After years of therapy and doing the work—and growing into an adult with a little more mindfulness about my approach—I decided that sharing my work was something that could help other people.

I'd learned along the way that we're never alone in our struggles, and that everyone's story has a place in the world.

Sharing my story has snowballed into other people sharing theirs. I think that's the magic in writing. If we can't find the words to speak, we can always find them to put them on paper and in turn create community through storytelling, literature, and language.

1440: How does writing work as a vehicle of self-inquiry? Alex: I love self-inquiry.

I'm a big believer that if we aren't tapping inward, and we aren't learning new things about ourselves on a regular basis, then we're stuck.

I try to take time every day for meditation or time outside. In those moments of quiet, I ask myself questions like, "Who am I? Who am I today? Who do I want to be tomorrow? How am I walking through this life? What am I leaving behind?" Sometimes I don't have answers; I'm just asking and getting the introspection flowing.

Ultimately, I may journal the questions that come to the surface. I may explore it and its offerings, but if I don't have an answer, I don't have an answer, and I honor that. That's a part of introspection—the not knowing. I'm kind of a control freak and like to know what's happening, but we can't know what's going on all the time—that's not realistic.

However, there are moments when an answer comes to me, and I honor that too. It's all part of the learning and evolving. I intend to stay on this road of introspective thought and dive deep within to discover certain questions, affirmations, or whatever else that comes up.

1440: What was the first work you shared? Alex: I released Words from a Wanderer, which is a collection of self-love notes, when I was 23. I was at a transitional point in my life—my friend group was shifting, I was stepping into my own on a spiritual and emotional level, and I was longing for love that was healthy and rooted in friendship. I was writing the self-love letters to myself as affirmations that I am worthy and deserving. But to also remind myself that if I kept looking within, everything would come as it should.

Initially, the notes were for just me. I shared them with friends here and there sometimes, though. One of them told me to stop "hoarding my happiness." I asked her what she meant. She told me: you have a story here. So many people are going to be able to relate to this. You should self-publish this collection.

1440: How do you teach others to use writing as a means of self-exploration?

I didn't have a social media following then; it was just me and my therapy tools. A few more friends suggested I publish the work, so I did.

Alex: I gravitate towards starting with self-love letters and positive affirmation writing. I always lean towards having people use pen and paper. Don't type it on your phone. Don't email it to yourself. Just sit down with your pen and your paper, or your pencil—something you can touch and feel—and do it that way. Because that is where the real magic happens.

Bearing my soul publicly required a lot of vulnerability.

It was hard because I was still young, I was still healing, and I had a 5-year-old daughter that I had to be mindful of. I was writing these notes to myself as I learned how to turn inward. I taught myself how to pull validation from deep within. It's been a journey!

When you have to X something out or erase it instead of just backspacing, it's more real.

Writing this way is a meditation. I like my students to find writing as a personal practice and a personal meditation.

In the end, my friends were right. People loved the work and words. Many wrote their own notes to self and shared them with me. That is something I still appreciate daily. This entire process has built community, and that's what I'm here to do.

R I C HARD S CHWARTZ Are you ready to create emotional, mental, and spiritual change? Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy provides a groundbreaking model for transformation, taking an effective and compassionate approach to the parts of you that are stuck in reactive patterns and holding you back from living your best life. Developed by Richard Schwartz, IFS draws on systems thinking with the view that the mind is made up of relatively discrete subpersonalities, each with its own viewpoint and qualities. Importantly, IFS also sees people as being whole underneath this collection of parts, the true Self.

Adyashanti, affectionately known as Adya, is an American-born teacher who successfully brings the esoteric concepts of spirituality into the nitty-gritty of daily life. His teachings are inspired and practical. He stresses both the infinite possibilities and the ordinary simplicity of an awakened life and offers clear instructions for living a spiritual life in a secular world.

1440:

What do you say to someone who wants to meditate or have a spiritual practice but can’t find the time?

Adya:

My teacher did all her seeking and practice while raising five children. When asked that question, she would say there are always the two minutes at the stoplight or the 10 minutes waiting to pick my kids up from school that I could just be endlessly thinking, or I could just be quiet. She would find time for meditation and other practices, but she didn’t have a bunch of hours to do that, so she oriented her life to it anywhere she could.

Now, if someone is consciously and willingly living an insane life, working 80 hours a week and running at 100 miles per hour, they can't necessarily do these contemplative practices. It's not like anything goes. Sometimes we do have to make certain decisions about what kind of life we want to live.

We all make choices, and if it’s meaningful to you to live in what others might call the rat race, that’s fine. But if it’s not, then it’s important to take the time to ask if your life is reflective of what you hold as most important and valuable.

Sometimes this question isn’t comfortable because you realize that life isn’t just happening to you, it’s also a reflection of all the choices you’ve made. Now if you live in Syria and bombs are dropping on your head, that’s something that’s being imposed on you. But the challenge of not being in that situation is that we can keep going with the illusion that it’s all quite outside our control. In some ways it is, but it’s also a reflection of your decisions.

Maybe tomorrow you could make one decision in the trajectory of your values. If you do one thing every day, then at the end of the year you’ll have 365 decisions based on integrity and truth that you wouldn’t have had otherwise.

1440:

How do we translate the expansive, peaceful feeling we have in our formal practices into daily life?

1440:

How can we stay informed and involved in the world without winding up angry and depressed?

Adya:

Next time you’re in a deeper state of being, ask yourself what it would be like if the next thing you did could be done from this ground of being, this deeper place. Practice on the small stuff—like brushing your teeth or making breakfast. You may not know how to do it, but have the intention.

Adya:

The problem with most news today is there is an intentional inducement toward outrage and resentment. We need to acknowledge that we’ve become addicted to this outrage and resentment and because of that we have an embodied culture that’s starting to reflect that.

Also, when you’re in a meaningful experience, look to see what is really important from that place. I call this connecting with your soul values. Is truth-telling important? Honesty? Openheartedness? Emotional availability? Sincerity? These aren’t values imposed from the outside—they’re what come up from your own deepest experience of being.

The news outlets aren’t going to stop, so at some point we have to ask if we can find a way to get the information we need without having our outrage sparked.

I’m not saying that people should never feel outraged or upset or despair over situations. I just think we need to practice better emotional hygiene if we want to be part of what might turn things around.

Now you have something you can translate down into human terms. You have something to work with.

It’s a hot emotional environment. None of us human beings tend to have the wisest responses to anything when we're heated up to the point of boiling over.

1440:

What can we do if we feel like our life is busy and full of activity but isn’t meaningful or fulfilling?

Adya:

Instead, can you find a way to act from the place of what it is you most value? If you value peace or truth-telling or connection, find that in yourself and act from there.

When I used to work in bike shops, all these wealthy people who were older than me would come in and look longingly at this 20-year-old kid and say, “God, it must be great to work here.” I would often think to myself that they could be doing this too if they really wanted.

HOLIDAY TIPS FROM EXECUTIVE CHEF KENNY W OODS • HIGHLIGHT LOCAL INGREDIENTS FROM FARMERS MARKETS. Staying local supports your neighboring farms and gives you access to what’s freshest that season. Choose apples, pears, citrus, potatoes, and greens as part of your holiday meals.

Executive Chef Kenny Woods

• FOR COOKING A TURKEY, CHOOSE A BRINE RECIPE. Brining the bird keeps the meat juicy, tender, and seasoned. You usually only need to brine the turkey overnight—and wow what a difference it makes. • TRY TO CUT BACK ON DAIRY, AND USE OLIVE OIL INSTEAD OF BUTTER. Mashed potatoes made with olive oil, garlic, and rosemary feel like comfort food without the side effect of weighing you down with large amounts of dairy. • PRE-PLAN YOUR MEALS. Plan your menu two weeks in advance. You’ll hit the stores sooner to avoid the crowds, and as the holiday gets closer you’ll have more time and energy to connect with friends and family. • DON’T DROP YOURSELF OFF THE PRIORITY LIST. Start your day with an immunity juice shot to boost your natural defenses against the stress, hustle, and wild holiday times.

POMEGRANATE IMMUNITY JUICE SHOT 5 ounces fresh ginger, peeled and chopped 2 ounces fresh turmeric, peeled and chopped 2 oranges, peeled and cut into quarters 1 pomegranate, peeled and cut into quarters 1

pinch of cayenne

Make sure ingredients are washed and chilled. Add all ingredients except cayenne to your juicer one by one. After all ingredients are juiced, add cayenne to taste. Stir until cayenne is fully incorporated. Drink immediately. Leftovers can be stored for 24 hours.
