1440 MULTIVERSITY Fall / Winter 2017 – 2018

Fall / Winter 2017 – 2018 THE NATION’S NEWEST LEARNING DESTINATION. IMMERSION WORKSHOPS FOR INTEGRATED LIVING. SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, CALIFORNIA

WE TEACH VALUABLE LIFE SKILLS THROUGH EXPERIENTIAL IMMERSION.

Dear friend, The astronomer Carl Sagan famously said, “We are a way for the universe to know itself. Some part of our being knows this is where we came from. The nitrogen in our DNA, the calcium in our teeth, the iron in our blood, the carbon in our apple pies were made in the interiors of collapsing stars. We are made of starstuff.” Are you a stargazer who, when looking at the night sky in wonder, feels a sense of belonging and unexplainable comfort? We can get so caught up in our daily tasks and whirling thoughts that it’s easy to lose touch with that which is always available to us—the feeling of being at home in the present moment. 1440 Multiversity is a place to explore deeply personal questions about who we are, show up bravely in conversation about what’s most meaningful, and gain practical skills for knowing, trusting, and sharing ourselves and our authentic voices as we aspire to be intentional in our thoughts, words, and actions.

WE KNOW THAT A HEALTHY, INTEGRATED LIFEST YLE MATTERS. WE BELIEVE IN THE IMPORTANCE OF AUTHENTIC CONNECTIONS.

We invite you to get to know us through these pages of highlights, interviews, and descriptions of upcoming weekend and five-day programs designed to offer you the opportunity to connect with your inner wisdom, relax, learn, and return home restored and energized. And be sure to browse our website for more campus photos, interviews, and full descriptions of additional programs we’ve curated just for you.

WHAT IS 1440? Named for the 1440 minutes in a day, we are founded on the belief that each minute is an opportunity to be present and aware of how we connect with what matters—both within and around us.

WHAT IS A MULTIVERSIT Y? We believe the deepest learning happens when we nurture and awaken all aspects of ourselves. A multiversity is a place designed to encourage and invite this process to unfold in each of us—on relational, emotional, somatic, intellectual, and spiritual levels.

AREAS OF STUDY Choose from a range of faculty-led courses in mindfulness, leadership, neuroscience, integrative medicine, relationships, yoga, the creative arts, and more. Not ready to decide? Our R&R program offers the chance to revitalize at 1440 with bite-size well-being offerings and specialty classes each day.

BECK

Martha Beck grew up wanting to be an ecologist or a professor. However, after bearing three children while acquiring three Harvard degrees, Martha decided she’d rather just lie down for a few decades. During that time, she became an author and life coach. Her books include: Expecting Adam, Leaving the Saints, Finding Your Own North Star, The Joy Diet, Steering by Starlight, Finding Your Way in a Wild New World, and her brand-new book, Diana, Herself: An Allegory of Awakening. Martha has been a columnist for O, The Oprah Magazine since its inception in 2001 and has been a contributing editor for several popular magazines, including Real Simple and Redbook.

1440: YOU DESCRIBE THE PROCESS OF FINDING OUR PASSION AND PURPOSE AS SIMILAR TO TRACKING A WILD ANIMAL. HOW ARE THESE ALIKE? MARTHA: I spend about a month a year in South Africa. I have

some friends there who do wildlife habitat restoration, and they took me out into the bush to learn to track animals. At first, I couldn’t “see” anything; then one day I looked at a lion’s print and suddenly I deeply understood what the animal had been doing. Something inside clicked, almost audibly, and from then on every track was like the page of a mystery novel. This click happens to nearly everyone who learns to track, and the first time it happens it’s like the best puzzle you have ever cracked— then it keeps unfolding from there.

1440: DO MEN AND WOMEN GO OFF TRAIL IN THE SAME WAY? MARTHA: We’re more alike than different, but it does sometimes play out differently depending on gender. We each have an essential or natural self, fixed in our genetics, that governs how we act and react. We also have a social or cultural self that follows the rules set down by others. The vast majority of people lose their joy simply because their social or cultural training takes them away from their natural or essential self.

Outwardly, women tend to subordinate their desires and put other people first, becoming caretakers. Or they try to emulate the masculine model and end up getting dissed for it socially. They might also try to do both at once and get shredded by the contradictory demands.

The experience of tracking lends itself really well as a metaphor for figuring out what to do with your life. Your true, deepest self has reactions to things that appeal to it, and these reactions are The male version is what I call the “man cage.” Men evolved to the felt experience of joy or relaxation in the body. Even if you’re be outside doing things like solving problems, making fires, and cut off from your emotions, which a lot of people are, you can building shelters. Instead, they’re under fluorescent lights being feel the effect of joy on your body. If you look ordered about by someone they don’t usually like, for through your life for those things that cause money. If they also have a wife and children they that surge of joy, those are the tracks. If you are expected to completely subordinate their You find the trail through will and their needs and participate in the job follow them, they will take you wherever your life is meant to take you. tracking back to find the last system to care for their family. Many men are slowly in jobs they hate because they’re thing that brought you joy. dying Finding your passion and purpose isn’t good men and want to take care of people. about analyzing your skills and looking for a job that fits them. It’s looking for that surge Jobs are a relatively new invention of society, but that of joy in the body and seeing what you were doing and asking isn’t how nature set things up. It’s a hierarchical work structure what about that thing made you feel that way. Then you look for that doesn’t demonstrably stand up to any rational examination. In another impression along the same track and follow it from there. nature, you go out and encounter the world and make your way. If we don’t question these cultural expectations and just accept them, it can kill us. But there are other ways. 1440: WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WE LOSE THE TRAIL?

MARTHA: First, there is joylessness, apathy, and tedium. Then there’s a growing sense of unhappiness, and even depression or despair. Going along with that will very often be physical illness. We shut down emotionally and then we shut down physically. All these signals are trying to get us to pay attention. The alarms will get louder and louder and louder until we listen. For me it took 12 years of chronic pain, depression, and anxiety before I realized there were things I had to let go of to follow the path that was mine.

1440: HOW DO WE FIND THE TRAIL AGAIN ONCE WE REALIZE WE’VE LOST IT? MARTHA: You don’t find it by staying in despair and saying, “Where’s my trail? What is my purpose? Tell me what to do.” It doesn’t work that way. You find the trail through tracking back to find the last thing that brought you joy. It’s like a game of getting warmer or getting colder. You find the places in your life where it’s warmer, and warmer, and warmer, and then red hot—then you’ve found it.

1440: WHAT’S THE EARLIEST TRACK YOU CAN REMEMBER IN YOUR LIFE THAT GAVE YOU A CLUE AS TO YOUR PASSION AND PURPOSE? MARTHA: I remember being three years old and running away from church to play. There was no one out because I lived in a Mormon community and everyone was in church. But I ran away to go play in nature and that’s kind of what I’ve been doing ever since: running away from social forms and “the right way to do things” and just going and playing in the woods. Most people’s earliest memories will hold a kernel of a clue to their purpose.

You have a life purpose waiting to express itself through you. The question is: are you ready to give your consent to living it?

Happiness hinges not on what we have or do in life but in how we respond to circumstances. No matter what we face, our choices determine the degree to which we discover possibility and experience positivity.

to Happiness

The science of happiness reveals that true happiness is created not found.

One of the first principles to honor in your relationship with yourself is to discover, activate, and trust your inner intuitive voice. This is the way of the heart—the epitome of well-being—and can be accelerated through practice of the Life Visioning Process. Michael Bernard Beckwith has taught this technology to thousands. This weekend he is joined by Julie Moret, and together they will help you break agreements with mediocrity and begin to function at a standard of excellence. You have been given the singular treasure that is your life—how will you use it?

This mindfulness-based happiness workshop is based on Stanford University’s continuing studies’ most popular course, which Laura Delizonna has taught since 2005. You will engage in peer discussions, outdoor meditations, reflections, group discussion, journaling, and one-on-one sharing, giving you the experience and knowledge you need to apply principles of happiness to your personal and professional life.

Do you know the guiding principle behind your life? You can find a clear, usable answer to this question—a detailed life map—right in your hands.

For many people, yoga begins as a physical discipline or a tool to heal an injured body or an overstressed nervous system. Quickly, they discover that physical health is only the beginning.

Join hand analysis expert Richard Unger and explore your life purpose, a deeply personal statement of life intent. You will receive a hand reading, engage in participatory lectures and exercises, and create a life purpose declaration.

TO N I B ERG I N S

Set yourself up for a great year by diving deep into your body, mind, and heart in a Bhakti Flow Yoga New Year’s retreat with teacher Rusty Wells.

What would it feel like to love yourself even more? Would you like to reclaim your voice, explore the connection between mind, body, and emotion, and meet your inner shaman?

With Bhakti Flow Yoga, you will tap into your abundant reservoir of inspiration. Beginning with a clear intention to let go of what no longer serves you, you will experience the healing potential of practicing yoga with unconditional love and devotion.

Join Toni Bergins, founder of JourneyDance, for a special New Year’s celebration that combines dance, guided visualization, and free expression. This is an invitation to part ways with old habits that are no longer serving you and open to new possibilities for 2018. This ecstatically fun and deeply liberating program invites you to embrace your body, share healing energy, reignite your passion for life, and elevate your vibration.

Zen Creativity and the Art of Life A LO K HS U KWAN G-HAN Open your eyes to Zen as art and art as Zen. Master calligraphic painter Alok Hsu Kwang-han will show you the way to create beautiful calligraphic images from the stillness of your being. Each morning begins with an hour-long meditation combining movement with stillness. You will begin to savor resting in presence and moving from emptiness, Alok’s “method-less method” of Zen creativity, integral to our own healing and awakening. You receive three brushes designed by Alok and learn to hold them as friends and paint with the mindset of a beginner—present, available, and playful.

SIF U MAT T HE W CO HE N Qigong is an ancient Asian system of health and self-development. Its slow, circular, repetitive movements invoke a sense of inner peace and relaxation. The practice involves meditation and movement, which develops internal calm and brings the body into greater harmony. The ancient Chinese scholars believed that the universe consists of five basic elements—metal, water, wood, fire, and earth. Five Element Qigong works with these elements and what they correlate to within our bodies. Join Sifu Matthew Cohen for an immersion into this qigong practice, which is done in alternating intervals of standing poses and walking meditation, and take home a complete practice you can use in your daily life.

S U DH A C ARO LY N LU N D EEN Yoga, meditation, and Ayurvedic practices can reverse the negative effects of chronic stress on the body and mind and help you step into a life of greater ease and health. Guided by Sudha Carolyn Lundeen, who has over 30 years of experience and a mix of traditional and contemporary healing techniques, you will explore ways to achieve your natural relaxed, grounded state of being through Ayurvedic selfcare practices, breathing techniques, and restorative and active yoga practices to calm the mind. Regroup after the holidays and prepare for the new year by building renewed strength and resilience. You will leave feeling relaxed and rebalanced with personal practices that you can build upon at home.

RO N A L EX A N D ER

Real love starts with you. Your emotional wellness depends on your willingness to turn and look inward at how you story your life. Join Alexandra H. Solomon on a “journey within,” and learn to name and connect with aspects of self and favor action over reaction in relationships.

You have the potential to live a much fuller life—one where the impossible becomes possible. But a powerful inner enemy prevents you from embracing this potential, robbing you of true pleasure, destroying your relationships, and stealing any sense of hope.

For 2,500 years, the wisdom teachings of the East have utilized “skillful methods” to study and transform the mind-body. Western science is confirming that indeed you can learn to change your thinking and behavior to enhance happiness and well-being.

Phil Stutz, one of the creators of The Tools®, calls this enemy Part X. He has worked with thousands of patients to see through Part X and defeat it. You will learn how to identify your own Part X and what to do once you discover it so you can lead a life overflowing with love, joy, and creativity.

Join Dr. Ronald Alexander and learn to cultivate self-regulation through awareness, concentration, and mindfulness. You will explore meditation and other attention skills to create new neural pathways for healthy and creative brain development and to enhance natural mind-body healing rhythms.

Tuition $350 plus 2 nights

Anyone looking to discover techniques proven by neuroscience and health science to improve your quality of life is welcome. You will walk away with skills you can use at home to develop a mindful brain, regulate emotions, calm the mind, and promote lovingkindness.

Explore why relational self-awareness is the cornerstone of a happy, healthy relationship, how your relationship with yourself impacts your romantic relationships, and how to relate to your past so that it serves you in love. You will take home skills to help you navigate inevitable challenges and be ready, resilient, and confident in love. Tuition $375 plus 2 nights

Our brains are hardwired for worry. While our ancient ancestors had a legitimate use for the fight-or-flight instinct, what was once a matter of survival has become the stuff of sleepless nights and anxious days.

This New Year, learn how to set authentic goals that reflect your true priorities as you move courageously toward your future. The key to setting and accomplishing New Year’s resolutions is not to focus on what you think you “should” accomplish, but instead to tap into your subconscious desires and dreams. Join Shasta Nelson and learn to access your personal wisdom through a series of awareness exercises and guided questions. With the support of a community of women, you will get still, get clear, and create focus around your future intentions. You will leave feeling excited about your revelations and more confident in your ability to make your dreams come true.

This weekend, gain tools for unhooking from the habit of worry as Dr. Rossman reviews the science behind mind-body healing and the reasons why worry is such a bad habit. You also will learn techniques to reduce stress, anxiety, and worry as well as improve sleep, mood, and your body’s own healing response. Anyone looking for a powerful path to relaxation and a more positive outlook on life is welcome. Tuition $350 plus 2 nights

Western Bodymind Healing

VI N N Y F ERRARO

M I C H A EL M AY ER

Now more than ever we are being challenged to face our stories and move beyond our assumptions—for the health of ourselves, our lives, and our communities.

During troubled times, ancient wisdom traditions can help us find a healing pathway. Join Michael Mayer for a workshop on the spirit and soul of tai chi and qigong, traditions drawn from a lineage of self-healing, spiritual unfolding, and self-defense.

Let Vinny Ferraro, mindfulness teacher and social justice advocate, guide you through an exploration of your personal conditioning. Discover how compassion and mindfulness training, combined with new models of communication, can help you move beyond the stories that rule your life.

Experience a fusion of ancient and modern approaches to body-mind healing with tai chi and qigong, anthropological research, Western body-mind healing methods, and psycho-mythological work.

This weekend is an opportunity to witness what’s possible for society when we are willing to take the risk to see past our old narratives and abandon our preconceived notions—to truly connect and heal that which divides us.

You will explore a new way of being through transformative standing meditation—“the million-dollar secret of qigong”—and powerful practices you can share with loved ones or patients to transform negative beliefs, work through challenges, and help with stress, anxiety, and trauma.

Through Restorative Yoga

In the colder months, the earth contracts and replenishes its energy reserves. We need opportunities to do the same. Align with nature and savor winter’s gifts as you slow down, turn inward, and recharge. Yoga helps to relieve stress, renew energy, and increase clarity by revitalizing the body, quieting the mind, and softening the heart center. Jillian Pransky weaves together mindfulness with Slow Flow Vinyasa to warm your body and boost your immune system, restorative yoga to calm the mind, and walking meditations to leave you grounded and connected to yourself and the world. Tuition $320 plus 2 nights

Our biological health is intimately tied to our hearts and minds, our aspirations and goals, and how we seek relief when we feel stressed or depleted. These abstract, even existential, issues are anchored in a scientific understanding of healthy aging that we can apply to our own lifestyles. This program is for anyone interested in learning about cellular health and the most relevant science behind stress, aging, and mindful practices. Delve into the latest research with Dr. Elissa Epel, health psychology researcher (coauthor of the New York Times best seller The Telomere Effect), and Dr. Eve Ekman, emotion and burnout researcher and teacher of meditation and Cultivating Emotional Balance. Take away tools and techniques for mind-body awareness and for achieving emotional balance, inner wisdom, and resilience.

“We can all become weapons of mass creation,” says award-winning film producer, director, and creativity expert Barnet Bain. It is within your grasp to live in a constant state of artistry that responds to every moment as a spiritual experience.

Confidence is how you achieve your dreams. It’s the key to a better work life, love life, and capacity to be a role model for others. So why go on lacking it?

Our inability to handle personal criticism from loved ones is a common Achilles’ heel. Love can make us feel fragile, unable to express ourselves honestly, or like we’re walking on eggshells. The result? We feel disconnected from loved ones. Love fades.

Facilitating Change for Others B E N S ALT ZMAN Are you a coach, therapist, or change agent who’s ready to evolve and grow? Are you willing to make some internal changes to get dramatically different results for yourself and others? Explore your Enneagram type with Ben Saltzman and learn how to use this knowledge in your work. Study the nine types and learn how people’s blind spots, fears, and ego defense mechanisms show up in coaching sessions. Integrate this valuable knowledge into your own life as you hone the skills required for the masterful facilitation of others. Mindfulness, Meditation, and Yoga for Enhanced Sensuality and Increased Sexual Confidence AND R E A PE NNI NGTO N A ND K ARE NA V I RGI NI A Sex is complex—inhibitions, poor communication, body image, and past trauma can derail intimacy. But you can learn how to boost confidence, enhance intimacy, and increase the quality of your sexual experience. Join sex educator Dr. Andrea Pennington and healer Karena Virginia for an intensive retreat on mindfulness meditation and its impact on the brain and the sexual response system. Experience the power of yoga and breathing exercises for feeling and moving energy through the body. You will also explore how to increase selfconfidence and self-acceptance, create a deeper intimate connection with your beloved, and get out of your head and into your body to enhance sensual pleasure and greater orgasm capacity.

The Art and Science of Rising MA R I A S I RO I S Life is difficult and, at times, terrifying. It is also wondrous and surprisingly beautiful. Navigating these two realities requires deep resilience—the capacity to ride waves of change while holding fast to what is good and strong within and around us. This is the art and science of rising. Join Maria Sirois for an exploration of a wealth of research from the fields of resilient leadership, positive psychology, and mindbody medicine. Consider the intersection of happiness and resilience, and how posttraumatic growth expands your life. Take home tools and practices to nourish you during difficult times and help you re-frame stressors as opportunities. Tuition $395 plus 5 nights

Through lectures, discussions, exercises, and somatic techniques, you will learn to rewire your brain, find freedom from self-criticism and perfectionism, harness inspiration and action, and discover your emotions as a doorway to creativity. Whether you are jump-starting a project, launching a business, creating a work of art, or looking to experience more fulfilling relationships, you will take home a blueprint to step beyond what you already know into a life of purpose and innovation.

Exploring self and Self

April 20 – 22, 2018

WITH ANN RANDOLPH AND JUSTIN HILTON

Deep Dive into Conscious Parenting

Alanis Morissette and friends invite you to explore, define, express, and deepen your connection and understanding of self, spirit-Self, and others. We’ll be taking a deep dive into many aspects of what makes us human in a way that will allow us to operate from a place of intuition, empowerment, curiosity, and profound trust as we move through our lives.

Oprah’s favorite parenting expert and best-selling author of the revolutionary Conscious Parenting approach to raising families, Dr. Shefali will take us into the fundamentals of her philosophies, outlining each concept in depth with practical examples and solutions. Participants will leave with a profound understanding of her concepts and how to apply them in their relationships with their children, fostering stronger connection and empowerment.

During our time together, we will explore our shadow aspects, our multiplicity of parts, the developmental stages and how they affect our adult relationships, and how we define our own values, healthy boundaries, and somatic awareness. We’ll also examine how aspects of the divine masculine and feminine show up in our lives, and how by dismantling fantasies we can help ourselves experience healthy relationships.

April 22 – 25, 2018

ALANIS MORISSETTE

Through writing, experiential exercises, direct teachings, creative expression, dialogue, movement, and inquiry, we can plumb the depths of our psyches as we define and nurture our connection with spirit, others, and our very own selves. With profound warmth, empathy, humor, wisdom, knowledge, and experience, this workshop is an invitation for you to create practices for self-care and self-knowledge so that you may live.

Alanis Morissette is most well-known for her autobiographical songwriting and passionate performances, as well as her evocative and engaging articles, interviews, and public speaking events. Her music has won seven Grammys. She is also a charitable activist who has supported causes that focus on empowerment, art, recovery, psychological and spiritual healing, feminism, relationships, and environmental causes, earning her a Global Tolerance Award from the United Nations.

Silent and Guided Meditation Retreat Give yourself the precious gift of being guided by Dr. Shefali into stillness and silence. Learn how to practice mindfulness in a powerful and deeply transformative manner, find your more authentic self, and create a life of greater purpose.

Shefali Tsabary, PhD

Alanis will be joined by award-winning writer-performer Ann Randolph and Justin Hilton, sought-after for his guidance through the terrain of shadow work, relationships, and addiction recovery.

Dr. Shefali Tsabary’s groundbreaking approach to parenting has taken her books to the top of the New York Times best seller list. Her blend of clinical psychology and Eastern mindfulness sets her apart as a leader in the field of mindfulness psychology.

darker, harder parts of my life—and via my work as Sugar, the lives of others—I hold up a mirror. People recognize themselves. They understand they are not alone.

1440: AS SUGAR, YOU OFFER PEOPLE WHAT HAS BEEN DESCRIBED AS RADICAL EMPATHY. WHAT DOES THIS CONCEPT MEAN TO YOU? DO YOU PRACTICE RADICAL EMPATHY TOWARD YOURSELF? WHAT DOES THAT LOOK LIKE? CHERYL: To me, radical empathy means striving to always hold others in unconditional positive regard. It means assuming that most of us are essentially good at our core, that we are all worthy of love and forgiveness. In action, it means willingness to contemplate the decisions and actions of others with consideration rather than condemnation, with compassion rather than scorn. Having radical empathy is not about letting people off the hook for their misdeeds and mistakes, but rather holding them—and ourselves—to a higher standard. It’s about saying, “I believe we are capable of doing better, of being kinder, braver, more honest, and more generous—even after we have failed to do so.”

I do a fair job of radical empathy towards myself, but I could do better! When I start beating myself up about something I wish I’d done or not done, I try to imagine what I might say to a friend if he or she came to me with that same struggle. It’s so much easier to be kind to others than it is to be kind to ourselves, so that mental shift in perspective helps me get out of my head a bit. Another thing that helps me when it comes to self-empathy is trusting the truth that we learn from our mistakes—that even if I have done something I regret, I have the opportunity to allow that experience to be a teacher to me so I won’t make the same mistake again.

1440: YOU ENCOURAGE ASPIRING WRITERS TO BE BRAVE IN THE TOPICS THEY EXPLORE IN THEIR WORK. WHY IS BRAVERY SO CRITICAL TO THE CREATIVE PROCESS? CHERYL: Because the creative process is ultimately about telling the truth. It’s about being as transparent as we can possibly bear to be. That is inherently scary. We risk condemnation, rejection, and vulnerable exposure when we show the world who we really are inside. You have to be brave to do that, and if you aren’t able to muster that bravery, it is pretty difficult to make art. Art’s job is to tell us what it means to be human, so the people who create it need to be up to that task.

1440: WHAT OBSTRUCTS YOUR OWN BRAVERY? IN WRITING AND IN LIFE? HOW DO YOU RESPOND? CHERYL: Like anyone, what I want most of all is to be loved and praised and I also want my books to be loved and praised. And yet I know there is no such person who can only be loved and praised, and also no such book. So, I remind myself of that when I feel afraid as a writer. I remind myself that my truest intention isn’t to please people. My intention is to do my work. So I do it. And you know what? The writing that people love me the very most for is precisely the writing I felt the very most afraid to write. In the hard moments, I remember that.

1440: YOU ARE KNOWN (AND ADORED) FOR YOUR GRIT AND HONEST Y AS A WRITER AND AS THE VOICE OF SUGAR. WHY DO YOU THINK READERS AND LISTENERS ARE SO HUNGRY FOR BOTH? CHERYL: We all struggle. We all experience self-doubt. We all want love and fear we won’t get it. As a writer and as a person, I’ve always tried to reveal rather than conceal those very human realities. I think people are hungry for it because it’s in opposition to the happy face so many people feel like they should be showing to the world. There’s nothing wrong with saying “Everything is great!” when everything is great, but the fact is that we all suffer, we all make mistakes, and we all have fears and insecurities.

CHERYL: Every day of my life for more than 26 years has been imbued with the sorrow that my mother is no longer in it. My grief is present in every breath I take—which doesn’t mean I’m always sad. It means I’ve had to get used to living with that enormous loss. I’ve had to learn to carry it with me and I’ve done that, rather joyfully. The deepest thing I know about loss is that grief is love. It is love. It is not sorrow. It is beauty, not ugliness. Maybe once or twice a year, I will think of my mom and weep. I miss her. But I bring her back to me every day in my own mothering of my two children and in my work. She is alive in my stories.
