Q&A with
AEROSPACE WALES
What do Airbus, BAE Systems, GE, Nordam, Babcock and British Airways all have in common? They all have a presence in Wales, where over 23,000 people work in the aerospace industry. For companies looking to expand their MRO business to Europe, Aerospace Wales is a great place to learn about financial incentives, trade shows, network opportunities, product and services promotion, and much more.
What is Aerospace Wales and what do you do? Aerospace Wales was founded in 2002, and since April 2013 the company has been part of the Industry Wales group along with the Welsh Automotive Forum and ESTnet with a funding package from the Welsh Government. The Aerospace Wales Forum is the trade association for all companies operating in the Aerospace, Defense and Space sectors in Wales. We support our members by promoting their companies on our website, in our capabilities brochure and trade directory, and by giving them access to events, networking opportunities and industry expertise. As a membership organization, we recognize that our value is measured by what we deliver and achieve for our members. To this end, we are committed to exploring new ideas and finding new clusters/collaborations that offer even more value to our membership.
What are the benefits of membership? The Forum consists of over 160 member companies and membership benefits include: • Regular industry updates about what’s happening in the aerospace sector, along with discussions about relevant key issues. • Networking opportunities with Aerospace Wales Forum members and other organizations at member forums and events. • Opportunities to exhibit with the Aerospace Wales Forum at exhibitions and international air shows and access to Trade Missions. • Promotion of company products and services on our website, within our capabilities brochure and trade brochure as well as publicity within our monthly newsletter, e-shots to members, social media postings and at events and exhibitions. • Easy access to Welsh Government Ministers through our strong relationship with the Welsh Government.
The Aerospace Wales Forum represents the views of its members and the wider aerospace sector at regional, national and international levels.

How do Member Companies work with Aerospace Wales? Aerospace Wales is supported in endeavors by our Directors and Ambassadors. Collectively they form our executive steering group and have interests in all our subsectors. They consist of senior personnel within their organizations and include: Nordam, Airbus, DECA, Raytheon, Zodiac, Tritech Group, Solvay, Aerocare, Redthorn, Spectrum Technologies and Industry Learning Solutions.
How big of an industry is MRO in Wales? Wales itself only has a population of 3 million people, however, Wales is a center of excellence for aerospace manufacturing and MRO related activities with over 160 companies employing in excess of 23,000 people. To put this in perspective, with just 5% of the United Kingdom (UK) population, we have around 10% of the UK’s aerospace industry which includes 20% of the UK MRO market.
1 Million Repairs Completed! UNICORP would like to thank its customers, suppliers and most importantly its employees, for helping our company reach this incredible milestone. UNICORP, founded in 1986 in a small house on the west side of Tulsa, Oklahoma with just five employees, has grown to nearly fifty employees specializing in repair & overhaul of avionics and electrical components for airlines, OEM’s, and parts distribution companies worldwide. UNICORP has become a preferred supplier to every major US airline and numerous other airlines around the world. UNICORP currently repairs more than 30,000 components annually. Most components are used on Boeing, Airbus, Fokker, Embraer, and Bombardier aircraft for more than 250 customers. UNICORP, through its in-house engineering department, has developed nearly 100 DER repairs and has designed and manufactured numerous test boxes, saving customers significant revenue. UNICORP prides its self in providing low labor costs and industry leading turn-around-times, with an average turn time of just 14 days. Scott Whitman President UNICORP Systems
What is your connection with the Welsh Government? As the trade association for all companies operating in the Aerospace and Defense sector in Wales, Aerospace Wales Forum works closely with the Welsh Government to promote Welsh capabilities globally, facilitate collaboration and networking opportunities and encourage and support participation at major international events.
What companies have a presence in Wales? We work with companies of all sizes to provide the tailored business support they need to grow. Our key players include among others, Airbus, BAE Systems, GE, Nordam, Babcock and British Airways. The Airbus wing manufacturing operation in Broughton, North Wales, has been the subject of massive investment and is the single largest manufacturing plant in Britain. Employing 6,500 and supporting a further 2,000 people in the local supply chain, Airbus spends more than ÂŁ120 million annually through its Welsh supply chain.
10
How do you encourage companies to come to Wales, as well as work to promote Welsh companies throughout the world? The Welsh Government has offices in the United States, in Washington, New York, Atlanta, Chicago and San Francisco. We utilize these resources to hold meetings and events on our behalf as they are fully briefed on the work we do to support our members. They are also a good local link for companies in the US that are looking to collaborate with Welsh partners or set up a new facility or Sales office in Wales. We also attend joint events, such as the recent MRO Americas expo to promote our members’ capabilities and to meet US companies interested in the work we do and the country of Wales. We also work closely with Welsh Government within Wales to help inward investors move to Wales, as we can offer the best financial incentives in Europe. We utilize the network of Welsh Government’s overseas offices to promote what we do and have meetings in the local regions.

Any final thoughts?
Does Aerospace Wales promote or organize any conferences or events? We do many exhibitions throughout the year with our largest show of the year being the Farnborough International Airshow in London. We also undertake a number of trade missions with our members throughout the year, the next major one is a visit to the Airbus final assembly line in Toulouse and will include networking events with the major suppliers in the region. We also hold supply chain days, recently with Raytheon and Qioptiq, which allows these major companies to highlight where there are potential gaps in their supply chain, and for our members to meet with their engineers and purchasing teams on a 1:1 basis to explain their products and services. This has proved a great success in promoting growth within our members organizations. Aerospace Wales actively supports the aircraft interiors industry in Wales and has a presence each year at the Aircraft Interiors Expo in Hamburg.
We have continued to grow over the years and are really seeing a lot of success, not only for us, but for the companies we represent. In October 2016 we were accepted into membership of the European Aerospace Cluster Partnership, which allows connections within aerospace as well as other industries. It’s exciting to be part of an association whose success is tied to the companies we represent. We have a vested interest in the success of the industry.
Aviation History
Around the world in 7 days
J
uly marked the 85th anniversary of the first successful solo flight around the world. Over the years there have been a number of famous flights around the globe under different criteria, be it Burt Rutan and Jeana Yeager aboard Voyager, or Steve Fossett flying with Virgin Atlantic, or even Amelia Earhart’s attempt in 1937. Currently, the fastest circumnavigation of the globe is listed at 41 hours 7 minutes for the Gulfstream G650. From the first days of aviation, people dreamed about flying around the world just as explorers did by land and sea in previous centuries. One the early pioneers of aviation was Wiley Post. Along with a navigator, Harold Gatty, Post had made the around-the-world flight in 1931. Post’s goal was to make a solo trip in the next two years. With the help from some fairly new innovations, autopilot and the radio direction finder, he set out from Floyd Bennett Field near Brooklyn, NY on July 15, 1933 by himself. The route Post took would circumnavigate the globe would take him between the 45th and 60th lines of latitude for a total distance of 15,596 miles (25,100 km). After a first leg of 26 hours, he landed in Berlin. He encountered autopilot problems on the way to the Soviet Union, which continued for a while. In order to make up time, he slept very little. To battle the effects of sleep deprivation, he tied a string around his finger and attached it to a heavy wrench, so if he fell asleep and his hand dropped, the tug of the wrench dropping would wake him up. After making it through the Soviet Union and back to the North American Continent,
his radio broke and he got lost over the wilderness in Alaska. Finally, on July 22nd he arrived back in New York after a flight of 7 days 18 hours and 49 minutes. From his 1931 and 1933 flights, Post was a celebrity. He did a number of high altitude flights using a pressurized suit, making it as high as 50,000 feet. Unfortunately, an airplane mishap in Alaska killed both him and American humorist Will Rogers in 1935, but Post’s mark on aviation history was secured. He paved the way for numerous adventurers who would come later.

The 145
Launches 145 Audit & 145 Training
S
everal years ago, The 145 launched a Audit Manager product which was branded and marketed under the OneAero MRO website. The product was designed to track supplier audits and give automatic notifications to renew or repeat the audit 30 days prior to the supplier’s audit expiration date. The concept was good but the product itself wasn’t great. After three years of lack luster sales, and limited customer adoption, the decision was made to pull-the-plug on Audit Manager in hopes of replacing it with a system that was more robust and that had a wider range of audit and training tracking possibilities. In April of this year The 145 adopted (and now markets) a comprehensive, user friendly Audit and Training Management software solution that does a LOT more than just track supplier audits. The Systems are named 145 Audit and 145 Training, a one stop destination for Maintenance Repair Organizations (MRO) looking to plan & manage regulatory audits, conduct internal quality audits and manage internal training programs. What does the new software do exactly? It manages and organizes all topics relating to FAA/EASA regulatory compliance. The following highlights
• Plan, schedule and manage both internal (self-audit) & external (supplier) Audits • Digitally create, track and log Corrective Action Requests (CAR) • Auditor Checklist Database • Findings and observations database • Systemic quality rejection reporting • Employee Management • Vendors Management • Easy Organizational structure for documents and procedures for: -Repair Station Manual/Quality Control System Manual -FAA Certifications -Operations Spécifications -EASA Certifications -Regulatory Approvals -Material Control -Non-OEM Test Equipment -Scrap -Shelf Life -Shift Change -Solder Station -Technical Data Management • Auto generation of AD and ESD Logs • Tools and Calibration management and monitoring systems • Drug and Alcohol data control
For companies looking to implement best practices, improve audit efficiency and reduce cost, there is no better system on the market today. The 145 platform is built on the CASE 1-A standard and structured to insure company readiness for any customer or regulatory audit. Features and Benefits Without going into too much detail, let’s take at some of the key features of the system and how those features benefit customers:

• Management Visibility It’s common for Management to frequently ask QA Managers for QA related reports such as Air Agency Certificates, Training Schedules, Scrap procedures, ESD logs, etc. One of the key features of this system is the fact that all authorized personnel have complete visibility to all QA related reports and document archives. It’s no longer the sole responsibility of the QA Manager to be the gatekeeper of all QA related data, management can access and view data without inconveniencing the QA folks. • Automated Notifications Imagine how nice it would be to receive an email notification every time a supplier’s mail in survey was about to expire, or your tooling or test equipment was in need of being calibrated or a notification that one of your QA personnel needed to start a particular training program, etc. This is a key feature of the 145 Audit system. Primary aspects of your quality systems are tracked through the system. It’s like having a personal assistant that literally tracks the major aspects of a company’s QA system. • Training If an inspector were to come into your facility today, unannounced, would you be 100% confident that all your recordkeeping and training documentation systems were up-to-date? Take your FAA Repair Station training to the next level by bringing it online using tools to effectively manage all your training programs, training completion and training scheduling all from one centralized location. If you’re still scheduling your company’s training programs using Excel spreadsheets or other homegrown ecosystems, now is the time to step up your game
• Tablet Ready For your next audit, how would you like to simply hand the auditor a tablet and say: “Everything you need to perform your audit is in the palm of your hand. Everything.” With 145 Audit you can. The system is so comprehensive literally all typical topics an auditor would need to validate during an audit are in the system. Assuming you stay on top of the automated reminders to update information in the system, your company will always be audit ready.
145 Magazine
These are just a few highlights of what the system can do. Any company that’s serious about improving the organizational and managerial flow of their Quality Assurance data, at that same time giving their non-Quality Control personnel visibility and access to routinely requested documentation, would greatly benefit from implementing such a software system. To test drive the system, contact Justin Spaulding at +1-888-820-8551, or visit www.145audit.com and www.145training.com for more information.

Aoibheann’s Pink Tie – PULLING FOR FAMILIES
O
ne thing we are always on the lookout for at The 145 are stories supporting a good cause. Davin McCormick and Dublin Aerospace brought to our attention the annual Plane Pull Competition supporting the Aoibheann’s Pink Tie Charity. I was able to sit down with Jimmy Norman, CEO of Aoibheann’s Pink Tie to discuss the charity and the Plane Pull Competition. First off, Aoibheann’s Pink Tie (pronounced A-Veen) was started by Jimmy Norman. His daughter, Aoibheann, was a typical 7-year-old girl when she started to get tried more easily, accompanied with a pale complexion. The doctors diagnosed her with stage IV cancer. After surgery to remove a 2 ½ kg (5.5 lbs.) tumor and continuous treatment of the cancer, Jimmy received word that “the company I worked for closed down SR Technics’ aircraft maintenance facility at Dublin Airport” meaning he was out of a job. During this time, Jimmy noticed that other families in the cancer ward at St. John’s Hospital in Dublin were struggling in ways that he couldn’t understand. He said, “I observed so much hardship in the cancer ward, the emotional and economic devastation to families” and this is where the seeds were planted for a charity to bless families with necessities as they try to care for a child with cancer.
Aoibheann’s Pink Tie Charity was formed to provide financial and emotional support to the families of any child at St. John’s ward. When Aoibheann passed away, the men wore pink ties at the funeral which was Aoibheann’s favorite color. The charity was formed in her memory to remedy the lack of support for other children and their families going through treatment. Some of the services they provide to patients and families are: Limited emergency financial support, support network, Hickman dry suits for swimming and showering, themed parties, custom murals on hospital room walls, princess dresses and hero costumes, birthday presents, help with phone/electrical/car bills, rent mortgages, and school fees. Essentially, the purpose of the charity is to be the support network that Jimmy saw so many families lacked while their children were in the cancer ward. Along with being a support charity, Aoibheann’s Pink Tie works with other charities. One such charity is called Chemo Duck. When children are on cancer treatment, many of them have to wear a port, which is a line connected to a catheter by which chemotherapy medications are administered. The children receiving cancer treat-

The loss of his daughter, Aoibheann, was a devastating event in Jimmy’s life, but from that has come the means to bless the lives of so many people. In a time of uncertainty, which cancer treatment most definitely is, Aoibheann’s Pink Tie provides support and hope for those who need it the most.
ment are given a Chemo Duck which is a stuffed animal duck with a port. This way, the children can transfer their fears and pains to the duck, making cancer treatment so much more manageable. The children also learn care for the port, which in turn helps them take care of their own port better. Over the years, Aoibheann’s Pink Tie has grown to become the charity it is today. There are a number of fundraisers they organize throughout the year. One of the main events is the Plane Pull Competition. The event takes place during July each year, when planes are receiving maintenance at Dublin Airport. People are divided into three teams, representing Dublin Aerospace, the Dublin Airport Authority, and DHL. Children from St. John’s are bused in to participate on the teams. The event consists of the three teams trying to pull an Airbus A330 over a 10-meter course. Jimmy says that the event takes about 21-22 seconds as teams are starting to train for the event. The winners get a beautiful trophy, but all of this is secondary to the money and hope that are raised for the families of the children in the cancer ward. Everyone comes away in high spirits.
Jimmy is very quick to mention the help and support he has received from several people, including Connor McCarthy, who founded Dublin Aerospace after the closure of SR Technics. To date, Dublin Aerospace has helped raise over $100,000 for Aoibheann’s Pink Tie Charity. Aoibheann’s doesn’t limit their fundraising to just the Plane Pull competition. Earlier this year they set a Guinness World Record for the worlds largest skinny dip event at Magheramore beach in Country Wicklow, Ireland, where over 2,500 women showed up and helped raise over $342,000 for the cause. WORST OF THE WORST Which Airport: - Is located just south of the Equator in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean? - Played an important role in the Falklands War in 1982? - Is adjacent to the “Worst Golf Course in the World”? - Is in such disrepair that as of 2017 it no longer receives commercial flights? Located 1,000 miles (1,600 km) from the coast of Africa, 1,400 miles (2,250 km) from the coast of Brazil, and about 8 degrees south of the Equator, Ascension Island is a British Territory grouped with St. Helena Island and Tristan da Cunha. Once a hot military spot as well as a potential landing spot during the Space Race, Ascension Island reached its peak of activity during the 1982 Falkland War where it was used as a staging post for the Royal Air Force, with hundreds of aircraft arriving and departing on a daily basis. Currently the island is used primarily for the Royal Air Force and as a marine reserve. There are no permanent inhabitants on the island, however, the island does list a population of just over 800 individuals, mostly researchers, military personnel, and NASA workers. One Boat Golf Club at one point was listed as the “Worst Golf Course in the World.” The course is a sand course with sand/diesel mix to make up the “green”. As of 2017, the runway was in such disrepair that it was decided to close the airport to military and civilian travel until the necessary repairs can be made. However, the island’s location in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, as an ideal stopover spot for air and sea travel, should keep it relevant for years to come.
