It’s that time of the year once more, the annual MRO Americas. This is a time to once again renew acquaintances, make new friends, and discover what’s new in the industry. At The 145 we love this time of year because we get to award our Top Shop Awards to those striving for excellence in the industry. This month we will take a look at aircraft refueling over time, an airport that began as a community project, a charity working to provide air support for people in need, and finally, a heartwarming story of the way the industry comes together to run for a good cause.

Good Cause

It all started with a question posed by Sam Bouveron (Thales), which went something like this, “I’m running in the New York City Marathon and I was wondering if I could run for your son, to raise money for his condition?” Such a sincere request is what got the ball rolling.

My son, Zeke, is 6 years old and was born with a rare condition called cloacal exstrophy (part of a larger diagnosis called OEIS), where his bladder and part of his intestines developed outside his body. As a result, his 6 years of life so far have been challenging, but still so much fun. He’s had 16 surgeries and been in the hospital over 230 days and still is a happy-go-lucky child that looks like any other kid when he has a shirt on. He has an ostomy bag and a G-tube for feedings, but all of that is forgotten when you see him running and playing with his friends and 9 other siblings.

As you can see, there were a lot of moving parts at this point. I applied to Boston, told them about my son, and waited. A couple of days later I was contacted and informed that I had been accepted, as one of about 5% of total applicants that make the cut for a charity spot. This would give me the opportunity to not only run in the Boston Marathon, but also raise money to help the hospital care for patients with similar conditions as my son. What made it even better was that we could couple the money raised during the New York Marathon with the money raised during Boston.
What seemed like a dream a few month before was fast becoming a reality. On November 2, 2018, my husband flew out to New York with two of our sons to watch Sam in the New York City Marathon. Sam had brought along his runner friend, Scott Avidon, to run for my son, as well as Roberta Groner. All I knew about Roberta was that she was a fast runner. When they met up the following day, my husband jokingly asked her, “So, are you going to break 2 hours 20 minutes?” (The women’s record is 2 hours 22 minutes) To his surprise, she didn’t flinch, but smiled and said, “No, but I hope to break 2 hours 30 minutes.” He told me, “I figured she was fast, but I didn’t expect her to be THAT fast.”

Since the finish line in Central Park was a madhouse, my husband and son met up with Sam at Thales in Piscataway, New Jersey the following day. Sam had spearheaded the fundraising, but all the wonderful people working at Thales had worked together to help support Sam and my son.
On November 4th my husband joined 1,000,000+ other spectators along the sidelines of the race. What was nice about the race was that all the runners were GPS tracked so it was easy to see where they were at any given time. The women came through first, with Roberta Groner fighting for a top 10 finish. The men came later, with Scott and Sam hovering around the 3-hour pace setter. In the end, Roberta finished 12th overall (out of 26,000 women) with a time of 2:31:01, Scott finished in just a hair under 3 hours, while Sam finished in 3:03:27.

Sam met them at the entrance of the Piscataway location and took them back to meet all of Zeke’s wonderful helpers. It was nice for both my husband and kids, and the people at Thales to meet face to face. Everyone was so accommodating and even passed out candy to the boys like it was Halloween (since it was just a few days into November). While the little kids ate snacks and candy, my husband was given a tour of the internal operations of Thales. He mentioned how amazing it was to see the ins and outs of a shop, and just how nice everyone was. The people at Thales seemed like they knew Zeke very well, and I guess in a sense, they did.

After the meet and greet and the tour, they retired to a conference room and had an award ceremony conducted by the VP/GM of Thales Avionics, Inc. Shyam Kumar. Everyone involved in the fundraising efforts met together while Sam presented my son with some memorabilia from the race, which included: Sam’s medal from the race, Roberta’s signed bib, some water bottles only given to the elite runners, as well as a huge foam check letting us know that Thales had raised over $2,100 to be donated in his name. There was also a competition to see who could guess closest to Sam’s final time. The winner was only a few seconds off.

If all goes as planned, following the MRO, I fly to Boston for the Marathon on April 15th, 2019. It is a dream come true to be able to run in the race, but what makes it more meaningful is that I get to join my efforts with Sam in raising money to help those less fortunate than me or my son. We’ve been blessed by the love and charity of so many people and hope to be able to give back in a small way.

On December 4, 1958, at 3:52 PM, Timm and Cook took off from McCarran Field in Las Vegas. They had been given FAA approval to operate the aircraft at roughly 400 pounds above maximum takeoff weight. For the first few days, they hovered around Las Vegas to work out any bugs. After all seemed to be in order, they made their way down south to Blythe because the terrain was less hilly. Twice a day a truck would rendezvous with the aircraft over a closed road, to refuel. The Hacienda would fly 20 feet off the ground and use an electric winch to lower a hook to catch the refueling hose. Timm or Cook, standing on the platform that was lowered out the co-pilot’s door, would then insert the hose into the belly tank to fill up the tank, which took about 3 minutes. Food, water, towels, and other items were passed up to the pilots during refueling runs. Their meals were chopped up and put into a thermos. There was a platform on the side of the plane used for showering and other hygienic

In 1923 the first mid-air refueling took place, followed by attempts at flight endurance records. In 1929, the record for time aloft was broken 5 times. In 1949, Bob Woodhouse and Woody Jongeward flew an Aeronca Sedan for over 46 days before landing (1124 hours and 17 minutes). Originally set up as a promotional stunt for the city of Yuma, Arizona, the aircraft, named “City of Yuma” took off on August 24, 1949, finally

According to AerinX, the benefit of its system compared to similar AR technologies is that it intends to supplement current inspection processes rather than fully automate them. Imre Hanyecz, CCO of AerinX noted that the AerinX system will serve as a “decision-making tool in the hands of the maintenance engineers” and build on their expertise during the inspection process. The system has numerous applications in the industry; primarily in expediting the inspection process and decreasing aircraft on ground (AOG) turn around time, where immediate inspection is required. According to international aviation industry statistics, 70-80 percent of aircraft accidents occur due to human lapses or mistakes. While a significant portion of such cases involve mistakes committed by either pilots or flight crew, a marked amount of lapses happen during checking and maintenance of aircraft. Most damage detection, registration and documentation still occur manually, with maintenance engineers measuring damage with a ruler, marking the spot with a marker pen, before having to sift through long, PDF or paper-based documentation when determining
An average external inspection may take up to 90-120 minutes with the current methods. AerinX claims to be able to reduce this time to 20 minutes, which may result in cost and time savings. In a sense, the AerinX system works as a “personal assistant” to the maintenance workers, providing them with a database of information, while also recording notes and problem spots on the surface of the airplane in 3D. AerinX is in the beginning stages of what it hopes to accomplish as a company. Currently they are expanding and seeking venture capital investment along with creating strategic partnerships in various segments of the aviation industry. AerinX recently began a strategic partnership with Aeroplex of Central Europe, one of the region’s largest MROs, to implement the system in heavy and line maintenance processes. During this prototype testing phase, two companies will work closely to refine and further develop the system’s functionality in real life industry conditions. Hanyecz says the next phase of development—which is estimated to take another six months—will entail refining and testing AerinX’s extended functionality. In recent years we have seen more collaboration between humans and machines, and the future looks to only solidify that relationship. AerinX hopes to pave the way for smarter aircraft maintenance and repair.

There is no cost for their services. They rely on the kindness of a small army of kind-hearted people. In 2017, Wings of Hope directly served 45,656 people. In order to be considered for assistance from Wings of Hope, individuals, groups, or nations apply to Wings of Hope for assistance. Unfortunately, one of the primary criteria that disqualifies a group from receiving assistance is if their nation is politically unstable or at war. After receiving requests, people at Wings of Hope determine what assistance they can provide, looking at flight operations and populations being served. Every request for help is considered on an individual basis, so even if you don’t meet any of the criteria, you might still receive assistance. President and CEO of Wings of Hope, Bret Heinrich wanted to mention that Wings of Hope, “works with all kinds of organizations, but we don’t just limit ourselves to faith-based organizations. Our bottom line is that we want anyone in the world to receive the care and the support they need with no strings attached.”

Soar into STEM With so much humanitarian work done throughout the world, Wings of Hope has shifted a portion of their focus to help another group of people often overlooked. According to the 2018 Boeing Pilot & Technician Outlook projections, 790,000 new civil aviation pilots, 754,000 new maintenance technicians, and 890,000 new cabin crew will be needed to fly and maintain the world fleet over the next 20 years. Wings of Hope sees this as an opportunity to address this shortage by getting young people excited about science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) learning and aviation careers through a new project they call Soar into STEM.
According to their website, “Soar into STEM is an exciting, hands-on STEM learning experience designed to engage students in STEM learning by bringing them into our hangar to work on mission- bound aircraft. The mission of Soar into STEM is to use the resources of Wings of Hope — airplanes, pilots, mechanics, and aviation experts — to expose young people (especially girls and students of color) to STEM- related pathways and future aviation careers.” The work they do not only brightens the student’s minds, but also prepares real aircraft to be used in future service missions. This shows students that learning in the classroom does have real life application and can make a difference in the world.

How is the program structured? Soar into STEM is a program held at the Wings of Hope world headquarters at Spirit of St. Louis Airport. Students meet on four Saturdays for hands-on repair and modification of an airplane, presentations by guest speakers sharing career path information and stories, and information about the Wings of Hope mission — including medical air transport flights that fly in and out of our St. Louis hangar. Topics covered include an introduction to how planes fly; pre- flight inspections; airplane engineering, manufacturing and maintenance; flight planning for a Wings of Hope mission; and navigation and navigation instruments. Students will also have an opportunity to spend time in a flight simulator and fly in a small-engine aircraft.
The work done by Wings of Hope blesses lives on many fronts, with close to 90% of all donations going straight to their missions and operations. Event details On March 1st- 3rd of this year, Power Avionics and GPS, in conjunction with Dreams Multimedia, held the 1st Annual Aviation Soccer Tournament in Miami, Florida, and the event was quickly heralded as a success. Power Avionics and GPS are both owned by Kevin and Chas Carmichael, which sponsored the tournament as a way to gather and connect the Aviation industry, to create and support new and established relationships that will help companies do business in a pleasant networking field for both recreational and professional competition.

The event surpassed all expectations and we are now expecting a larger tournament, which will be held in January 2020. A special thanks needs to be given to Connie Bahamon from Dreams Multimedia and Chas Carmichael, for helping put the tournament together. There has already been a great deal of anticipation for next year’s event, with several airlines and companies already signed up. In order to further build and strengthen bonds in the industry, The Aviation Soccer Tournament will be open to both National and International teams.

Announces Acquisition of APU Piece Part Repair Business from the Triumph Group On January 15, 2019, TurbineAero announced the acquisition of the APU piece part Repair Product Line (RPL) from Triumph Aviation Services. “We are delighted to add the APU piece part repair technology to our existing APU Systems MRO capabilities. This acquisition emphasizes our focus on APU MRO and enables us to provide increased value-added services to our worldwide customer base,” said Peter Gille, Vice President and General Manager of TurbineAero Repair-Asia. “The acquisition highlights the growth TurbineAero has witnessed over the last two years and confirms the development of the aerospace industry in Thailand, where we are privileged to be included.”
