Inner Peace in Gangnam a new buddhism facility in Gangnam, Seoul, 2013 Graduation project
Why you select Buddhism facility for Graduation work? Buddhism architectures has less contemporary design than other religion. Christianity architectures after Ronchamp church, is now grow up with various contemporary design. But Buddhism has just traditionality in their architectures. I thought this is a big problem in Buddhism architecture which can make buddism regress. And also i thought buddhism architecture, which has the only goal to show the origin of buddhism can make people misunderstand that buddhism is hard to understand. However, recently the society of buddhism try to apeal their doctrine by mixing buddhism facilities and commercials. But actually this movement is against their doctrine. So, in this situation, I decided to solve this problem and propose the right way of new buddhism facilities.
왜 불교시설을 졸업 설계로 선택했는가? 다른 종교와 비교하여 불교는 현대적인 건축물이 상대적으로 적다. 롱샹성당 이후의 기독교는 현대에 다양한 건축디자인으로 발전해나가고 있는 와중에, 불교는 여전히 건축에 있어서 전통성만을 따르고 있다. 이는 불교 건축의 퇴 보로 이어질 수 도 있는 중요한 문제라 생각했다. 또한 전통만을 추구하는 불 교건축으로 인해 일반인들에게 불교가 어렵다는 편견을 갖게했을 수도 있겠 다는 생각이 들었다. 하지만 최근 불교계는 불교를 어려워하는 일반인들에 포 교하기 위해 상업시설을 이용하고 있다. 불교의 교리와는 정반대로 향해가고 있는 것이다. 이러한 현대의 불교의 여러 문제를 현대사찰의 새로운 대안을 제시함과 동시에 일반인들에게 쉽게 다가갈 수 있도록 해결해 보고 싶었다.
How to make people accept Buddhism easier as architecture? Let s go back to essence of the Buddhism. Buddhism s ultimate aim is reaching to nirvana through each person s endless mediation. So if make mediation space in middle of city, citizen will accept Buddhism easier than before. Maybe people can t realize this project is Buddhism Facility. In this mediation space, citizen can find enlightenment by doing these things : look down the city or feel the quiet space in middle of city. Like this, if Buddhism spread in to the city and let people know Buddhism s spirit without saying anything, people can accept Buddhism more easily.
어떻게 불교가 일반인에게 쉽게 다가가게 할것인가? 본래 불교는 홀로 사색하며 그 속에서 깨달음을 얻어 열반하는것을 목표로 삼는 종교이다. 따라서 바쁜 도시 한가 운데에 일반인들이 누구나 와서 사색에 잠길 수 있는 공간을 제공해준다면 일반인은 불교를 보다 쉽게 받아들일 수 있을것이다. 어쩌면 사람들은 이 프로젝트가 불교시설인지 알아차리지 못할 수 도 있다. 이 사색의 공간에서 사람 들은 도시를 내려다보거나 도심속에 흔치않은 조용한 공간에서 사색에 잠기며 각 개개인의 깨달음을 얻을 수 있을 것이다. 이처럼 불교가 도시속에 스며들어 사람들에게 말없이 불교의 참 뜻을 알린다면 일반인들은 불교를 더욱 쉽 게 받아들일 수 있을 것이다.

Circulation 1st Floor is open to everyone This entrance is connected with the crosswalk right ahead So I designed this entrance bigger than other entrances
This facility has many entrances to visitor get in easier and make other people easy to enter who just pass through this site

Water on the ground means separate the world to Buddha s world in Buddhism. And also water can make rest area in middle of city.

ake circulation in middle of building by following the mass. People an think this circulation is the route to get to Buddha. Also people can realize where they are now in the building.
