06

Outside box 1. Collect materials. Start with stock that’s 5.5x8.5 in. I use 9 pieces, 4 kinds of wood to create a rainbow color.

2. Lay on the glue. Apply yellow glue on mating faces of the stock. Spread it into even, thin layers with a roller.

3. Clamp it all together. Apply yellow glue on mating faces of the stock. Spread it into even, thin layers with a roller.

4. Prepare the template 1A. Print the box template and grab the spray adhesive. Apply an even coat to the back of the template.

5. Attach the template. Set the template in place on the face of the box. Smooth out any air bubbles.

07

Outside box 6. Prepare the saw. 3/16 in. skip tooth blade is recommended for a clean cut.

7. Cut the box to shape. Use a slow feed rate and cut as close to the line as you can without going over. Later, you can sand the line.

8. Check out the work. After the initial outside is cut, check the overall shape.

9. Cut out the drawer. It’s important to take time and cut right on the line. If it’s too hard to cut, you can cut from the end of the box going with grain.

10. Cut out the smaller drawer. Cut straight in from the edge.

11 . Glue up the first drawer. Use yellow glue along the cutline. Clamp it close.

08

Outside box 12. Use the big bandsaw. It’s better to use a ½” or wider resaw blade.

13. Cut up the drawers. Remove the front and back of the drawers. Set the fence for a ½ in cut and use a slow and steady feed rate.

14. Lay out the parts. You should have 6 pieces now. Cut out the drawer pocket from the center section.

15. Draw the drawer opening. / Attach 1C template. On the front of the middle drawer section, draw out the waste (inside boxes’ material) to be removed. Draw it out free hand or use the template and attach it to the section.

16. Change to the small bandsaw.

Outside box

17. Remove the waste. Back at bandsaw, remove the waste from the center section of the drawer.

R½ ”

18. Check out each part. 19. Smooth the interior of the drawer. 20. Clamp them up and glue them.

Note: To remove the waste for the small drawer, use table saw to make a 1” width, ¼” depth opening and then use the router bit ( ½” round shape) to carve the left part.

10

Outside box 21. Shape the drawer. The drawers’ template lines may not be visible. Just sand them smooth without removing too much stock. The more you remove, the looser the fit of the drawer.

22. Peel off the template. 23. Sand it smooth. Take the outer shell and the first drawer to disc and spindle sanders, and sand it down to the line. This step could also be finished by any sander or by hand.

24. Round it over. Use a 1/8 in. round over bit at your router table to smooth the edges of the shell and the drawer. It you’re without a router table, round over with sandpaper or a rasp.

25. Smooth it out. Final sand both the shell and the drawer. For a very smooth and invite touch, sand to 320 grit.

26. Finish it off. Apply your favorite finish.

11

Inside boxes 1. Collect materials. Use the waste from the step 17 in the outside box.

2. Prepare the template 2. Print the box template and grab the spray adhesive. Apply an even coat to the back of the template.

3. Attach the template. Set the template in place on the face of the box. Smooth out any air bubbles.

4.Shape the stock. To make sure the stock can fit back in the outer box. Just sand them smooth without removing too much stock. The more you remove, the looser the fit of the drawer. (Shape it from the dashed outline to the inside line.)

5. Separate the stock. Since the stock will finally be an earring box and a necklace box, I split the stock into a 2.5” stock and a 3” stock.

Inside boxes 3/8 ”

6. Keep using the big bandsaw. It’s better to use a ½” or wider saw blade.

7. Cut up the drawers. Remove the front and back of the drawers. (which will become the lid and bottom for earring box and the front and back for necklace box) Set the fence for a 3/8” in cut and use a slow and steady feed rate.

8. Lay out the parts. 9. Draw the drawer opening. / Attach 1C template. On the front of the middle drawer section, draw out the waste (inside boxes’ material) to be removed. Draw it out free hand or use the template and attach it to the section.

10. Change to the small bandsaw.

13

Inside boxes 11. Remove the waste. Back at bandsaw, remove the waste from the center section of the drawer. Cut straight in from the edge of the blank. Again, use a slow feed rate and cut as closely to the line as possible. Note: for the necklace box, you can drill the hinge pin holes before sliding the waste. The hole is 3/16” diameter and ½” deep.

12. Check box2 and separate box3. Arrange each part. The following steps are different for the two boxes.

14

Earring box 1. Smooth the interior of the box body. 2. Clamp and glue the box body. 3. Mill the thumb slot. Use a 1” diameter sanding sleeve on the drill press to mill the thumb slot. This step could also be finished by hand.

4.Cut out the lid liner. Slide a ¼” piece from the waste for lid liner. Set the fence for a ¼” cut and use a slow and steady feed rate.

5. Sand the lid liner. Sand the edge of the lid liner. Polish the lower surface. This step could be finished by any sander or by hand.

6. Make the lid. Glue the lid liner to the underside of the lid.

9. Smooth it out. Final sand both the shell and the drawer. For a very smooth and invite touch, sand to 320 grit.

10. Finish it off. Apply your favorite finish.

Necklace box

Now after Step 15, there are 4 parts. (If the hinge pin holes have been drilled, skip step1,2,6&7; if not, do like the following steps)

1. Mark the hinge pin holes on two sides. 2. Drill 3/16” diameter holes for the hinge pins. 3. Smooth the interior of the body box. 4. Glue the body box and clamp it. 5. Sand the two edges for the lid. 6. Mark the hinge pin holes on the lid. 7. Drill the hinge pin holes on the lid. 8. Finish-sand the interior of the lid and set the hinge pins in place.

9. Mill the thumb slot. Use a 1” diameter sanding sleeve on the drill press to mill the thumb slot. This step could also be finished by hand.

10. Sand it smooth. Take the outer shell and the first drawer to disc and spindle sanders, and sand it down to the line. This step could also be finished by any sander or by hand.

11. Round it over. Use a 1/8 in. round over bit at your router table to smooth the edges of the shell and the drawer. It you’re without a router table, round over with sandpaper or a rasp.

12. Smooth it out. Final sand both the shell and the drawer. For a very smooth and invite touch, sand to 320 grit.

13. Finish it off. Apply your favorite finish.
