Interpreting Rules & Guidelines What you need to remember 1. Avoid word-by-word interpreting. Words may form a meaning or a gist that is very different from their dictionary definitions. Follow the conversation closely and use your common sense to judge the situation of a dialogue. Always interpret within the context.
2. When you cannot understand or confused, communicate with the speakers in their respective languages and clarify what you need to deliver. 1) When information is missed: “Could you repeat that, please?” 2) When the sentence structure is complex: “Could you paraphrase the sentence, please?” 3) When you do not know a particular word or phrase: “I don’t understand the word . Could you explain the word, please?” 4) When confirmation is needed: “Let me just check if I understand you correctly. Do you mean
?”
5) When the sentence is too long: “Can you break up the sentence, please?”
3. Do not use pronouns such as 그녀, 그, 당신, 그들, or 너. Koreans often drop the subject altogether when they speak. Always choose to speak in polite form unless it is clear that both parties are close friends.
4. Speak in first person in consecutive interpreting.
