The southern islands
Tradition and renewal It is not without reason that Lolland-Falster are sometimes known as the South Sea Islands. Our region is the sunniest in Denmark, so it is not surprising that we have some of the biggest solar energy systems in Northern Europe. We also attach great importance to clean energy and locally produced food. If you come as a tourist hoping to enjoy the natural countryside on an active holiday, Lolland can now offer you two nature reserves, the Maribo lakes and Nakskov Fjord. Together with the smooth strait between Lolland and Falster, they are a paradise for canoeists and kayak enthusiasts. Cycle touring is increasingly popular on Lolland-Falster, and has great potential. You could for instance cycle along the embankment from Rødby to Nakskov, and there are lots of routes to cultural and historic places to visit on the islands. You will also find some of the most beautiful churches in Denmark, among them Maribo Cathedral, the Abbey church in Nykøbing Falster, Kippinge church and St. Nikolai church in Nakskov. Altogether, we have a unique area with a rich cultural heritage reflected in both the towns and the landscape. Over the centuries the manor houses on Lolland-Falster have been bearers of culture, and many of them today have successfully opened their doors to the public. One of these is Knuthenborg Safari Park, while Knuthenlund Manor is one of Denmark’s largest centres for organic produce, with a very attractive farm shop. Frederiksdal Manor is dedicated to the production of award-winning cherry wine, which is now successfully exported throughout Europe and to China and the USA. Don’t forget to take in the Småland Sea islands on your route: in spite of their modest size, Fejø and Femø have a lot to offer. We are delighted to welcome you to Lolland-Falster, where you will find nature and culture and lots to enjoy. Remember to reserve a couple of days for our town jubilees: 750 years in Nakskov and 600 years in Maribo. Have a really good holiday! Niels Halm Town Manager, Nakskov

We have a beach you will like Whether you like holiday entertainments or peaceful woods right to the water’s edge. Welcome to the best beaches in Denmark! Visitors have repeatedly nominated the miles of soft, white sandy beaches at Marielyst as the best in Denmark. Added to that, the sea bottom in most places is firm and clean, so it is easy to see why all those visitors come back to Marielyst for their holidays year after year. Above the beach is a lively holiday town, which has been refurbished recently and looks better than ever. The town square has become a giant wooden patio where the town centre can be viewed from deckchairs. Of course, there is food and drink for every taste, and entertainment indoors and out.
Did you know ‌ Safety for bathers is high priority on Lolland-Falster. There are signs with a letter and a number, so that the emergency call centre can always locate where an alarm call is coming from. Additionally, Marielyst beach is always patrolled in the peak season by specially trained coastal lifesavers.
Altogether, the beaches around Lolland-Falster are wonderful for bathing for young and old. Often shallow water and gentle waves are only a few hundred metres from roaring breakers and salt spray. So welcome to some of the best places in Denmark to bathe. Find Lolland-Falster’s beaches at www.visitlolland-falster.com

You’ll find a delightful holiday atmosphere... 3
… in the old fishing harbour at Hesnæs on the east coast of Falster. Blue fishing boats swaying in the harbour, while the old beech trees stretch slender branches over the sea. Lovely sandy beaches on both sides of the harbour, and lots of beautiful walks in the woods just invite you to pack a picnic and have a great day with the family by the sea.

Night Zoo among the crocodiles In July the Crocodile Zoo extends its opening hours and you are invited to the Night Zoo. From sunset until it is dark the predators of the night are awake. It is especially exciting to see the animals fed at night.
Between the palms and pools in the Crocodile Zoo everything is pitch dark. All is silent except softly trickling water and the cry of a bird. Then comes a rustle in the undergrowth. Suddenly yellow eyes gleam as they are caught in the light of a torch. Sobek has woken up, and he’s hungry! Sobek is an African Nile crocodile. Over five metres long and weighing more than half a ton, he is the biggest animal in the zoo. Sobek means Lord of the Night, and together with 22 other crocodiles he makes it the biggest crocodile zoo in Europe, with all 23 species of crocodiles alive today.
Night in Crocodile Zoo In July and in week 42, in addition to normal daytime opening hours, the Crocodile Zoo opens in the evenings for the night zoo. Ovstrupvej 9 DK-4863 Eskilstrup Tel. +45 54 45 42 42
During the summer you can meet Sobek and his friends at a very special event, the Crocodile Night Zoo. Late in the evening, when it is dark except for the beams of torches, the crocodiles are fed. So are the elegant tree leopards, who rarely show themselves in the daytime. But at night things are lively between the trees, and they are in their element.

The countryside in summer
Fun for everyone Meet handsome tigers and mischievous otters at the zoo. Many farms on Lolland-Falster are open to visitors, and at one you can go on a cow safari. It is a great experience to travel back in time with the museum train. There is simply something for everyone in the country in summer.
Knuthenlund At the heart of Lolland’s rich farmland, the Knuthenlund organic estate has 600 sheep, cows and friendly pigs you can stroke. Visit the animals in the stables and in the fields, watch them being milked, and look into the dairy. The super farm shop has lots of Knuthenlund’s own products. There are several events at the estate during the summer, including the international contest for the Native Cooking Award. Celebrity cooks from different countries compete to see who makes the best dish from local products and natural herbs.

Settle comfortably and hold on, because it’s quite a ride! At Kirkehøjens Limousine you are taken close to the big red-brown limousine cattle and their sweet little calves as they graze in the pastures. On the safari visitors ride in a trailer with benches, and there is room for wheelchairs and prams.
Lolland-Falster’s first railway opened in 1869 as a goods route between Maribo and Bandholm Harbour. Today the eight-kilometre stretch has been opened as a museum railway, offering rides through fantastic countryside. See among other things the oldest steam engine still in operation in Denmark, KIØGE from 1879, and the first-class carriages with plush seats.

Spend a night with the wolves, count the animals on the savannah or ride on the train with cheeky monkeys - at Knuthenborg Safari Park on Lolland things are really wild among giraffes and rhinoceros and stripy zebra.
Pack swimwear and binoculars and prepare for a lovely day by the sea. From the beginning of July to mid-August you can go on a three-hour seal safari on the Baltic, starting from Nysted Harbour. The boat heads out from beautiful Nysted Bay and passes the giant wind farm at Rødsand on the way to the sandbanks where the seals bask in the sun. It is also possible to have a swim in the shallow water. Remember to book tickets from www.nysted-sælsafari.dk or at Nysted Mole Is og Grill.

When the park opens on 30 April, all the baby animals play on the savannah, while handsome tigers sleep all day on a branch. There is enough to see and do for hours and hours on the great savannah, in the tiger park or among the wolves. Have fun with the friendly ponies or pat a camel. Burn off surplus energy in Limpopo Land, which has Denmark’s biggest nature playground and lots to do for both wild and less wild children. You might like to move up into the trees for a treetop walk along all the walkways high above the ground. Don’t forget your swimming costumes! The huge water park will cool large and small adventurers on hot summer days. If they dare, the wildest can venture up the longest, highest and steepest flume in Denmark – the Congo Splash. Through the summer Knuthenborg Safari park organises lots of exciting special events, too. Have you ever watched a real polo match, with players galloping round after a ball which is hit with a mallet – and it’s all on horseback? Why not get your swimwear and running shoes on and do Denmark’s wildest triathlon among camels and buffaloes on Knuthenborg savannah? Or all the family can join in when the annual relay race is started.

Nykøbing Falster has two special attractions near the centre. Go straight back to the year 1400 and see knightly tournaments, mythical animals and residents of the medieval town Sundkøbing. Or plan a great outing to Guldborgsund Zoo and Botanical Gardens, where there is also a fantastic nature playground.
In the mediaeval town of Sundkøbing on the west coast of Guldborgsund, time has been turned back to around 1400. For 25 years now, massive war machines have flung balls of stone out over the sound, and gallant knights have jousted daily in dramatic tournaments. Join in the town’s exciting and slightly scary experiences all summer. In May the focus is on beliefs and superstitions. Venture into the forest and meet the mythical Underground People, the three-legged ghost horse and the water elf. In June they will burn charcoal stacks, produce tar and charcoal, and fire lime in kilns for the church building. In July and August the centre’s jubilee will be celebrated with archery days and a plague weekend among other things. In early July there is a chance to hear storytellers from all over Europe, while in August the focus will shift to mediaeval machines and technology.
Fun for everyone
Welcome to the Middle Ages and a really friendly zoo
Tip When hunger sets in, you can always find a pleasant corner to eat your sandwiches, or visit the lama kiosk in Guldborgsund Zoo and Botanical Garden.
There is a complete change of scene among more than 80 different animals at Guldborgsund Zoo. The Siberian tiger keeps an eye on everything, while bold ring-tailed lemurs hop in the branches, and meerkats always have a guard posted. In the close heat of the rainforest you will meet the golden-headed lion tamarins and cotton-top tamarins. Remember to look down, too, at the giant turtles and crested partridges wandering round the forest floor. The botanical gardens have a dino-garden with magnolias like the ones that grew 65 million years ago. In the Himalaya gorge, waterfalls trickle between hundreds of rhododendrons. Burn off some energy with exciting games or on the wild nature playground, with challenges for all the family. Don’t forget the fantastic world of reptiles, where you can meet the giant bombsniffer rats, tiny frogs and hissing cockroaches.

Sleep royally Wellness, a spa and beautiful historic rooms are all part of Lungholm Castle near Rødby. it is possible to book the whole castle and its fabulous park – for your wedding, perhaps.
The yellow houses at Bandholm Hardly anywhere on Lolland-Falster could offer a more casually comfortable holiday than Bandholm Hotel. The lovely, light bedrooms and authentic reception rooms are sheer delight for a bathing holiday. Nothing could be more romantic than a swim from Denmark’s oldest bathing facilities just a few hundred yards away, and perhaps a stroll past the fine yellow warehouses in Bandholm.
Dinner as the sun goes down One of the greatest delights of Lolland-Falster is a good dinner as the sun gradually sinks in to the sea. At the restaurant Den Fuldkomne Fisker (Perfect Fisher) near Onsevig Camping the menu is composed of fresh local produce gathered by the hosts, Hanne and Carl Madsen, and varies according to the cook’s fancy. This small, untraditional eatery is well hidden in the harbour in Onsevig, on the flat north-west coast of Lolland, where the sea has attempted several times to flatten the area. The town has recovered every time, and is now protected behind dykes. Wander round the charming little harbour and see Denmark’s – and the world’s – first marine wind turbines while the last light of the day explodes in a blaze of red in the west.
Summer for two On the shores of the Baltic Drive right out to the east coast of Falster, go for a walk in the woods, and round off with a good dinner at the restaurant Pomle Nakke. The buildings are more than a hundred years old, but the owners are young: Kim and Tina will serve good Danish food with the Baltic sea surging just below.

Get yourself in form on your holiday. Holidays don’t have to be spent in complete idleness. Here are a few more active options on Lolland-Falster.
Lolland and Falster’s east coasts onto the Baltic are both protected by kilometres of dykes. A run along the wide gravel paths on the dikes takes you past open country and summer cottages, with the sea just beside you. At several points there are toilet buildings with drinking water.
Follow the exercise snake
A workout in the gravel pits Around the Nørre Vedby Gravel pits on North Falster there is a 4-kilometre fitness route that winds up and down the slopes. If that is not challenging enough, you can go down to the bottom and up again. It is an area of natural beauty, with lakes at the centre and several campfire sites and shelters.

Motionsslangen, the exercise snake, is a 42-kilometre signposted exercise route through Nykøbing Falster and its surroundings. You can start at Slotsbryggen, where there are maps with an overview. The route can be shortened at several points, and the full route goes through town, country, and woods and along the coast.
Lolland’s Alps Get your hiking boots on and go around Ravnsby Bakker, also called Lolland’s Alps. This unusual landscape was formed in the Ice Age by huge blocks of ice, and there are several twisty paths with fine views of the Småland Sea.

The fjord with most islands See seals lazing in the sun, or watch the amazing bird life in the Nakskov Fjord Nature Park. The area covers about 55 km2, extending from the shallow waters in the fjord over flat meadows and Albuen, an angled spit of land where mediaeval herring markets were held.

In the middle of the magnificent landscape of Lolland’s manor estates lies the protected Maribo Lakes Nature Park. Surrounded by fields, meadows, bogs and woods, the four lakes, Søndersø, Røgbølle Lake, Hejrede Lake and Nørresø, form a unique habitat for many birds and animal species. White-tailed eagles are rare in Denmark, but they live here, beside red-crested pochard, which were believed to be extinct in Denmark. Rare migratory birds stop here to feed. The nature park is accessible on foot, by cycle or canoes and kayaks, or with a guide by boat. There is a fine net of paths and signposted routes through the area, and plenty of good accommodation indoors or in the wild.
The wide hull of the boat glides slowly between the islands in Nakskov Fjord. Archaeological finds at Enehøje have revealed that reindeer hunters lived there as long ago as 12,000 B.C. There is a landing in 1926, when the Polar explorer Peter Freuchen bought the island and lived there until 1940. Then back to 1509, when King Hans built the fortified shipyard at Engelsborg on Slotø. His plan was to build a fleet of warships to protect Nakskov from invaders from Sweden and Lübeck. Unfortunately he did not succeed. The very next year, invaders from Lübeck sailed to the west of the island, beyond the reach of the canons, and burned Nakskov down – yet again. The old post boat Vesta has been in operation on the fjord for more than 75 years, and has seen a lot of history. The boat cannot talk, but the skipper, Otto Paludan, can, and he is delighted to tell passengers what they can see on the way as he delivers the post to the small islands.

Fascinating Fejø
It only takes fifteen minutes to sail from the little quay at Kragenæs to Fejø, with its charming old houses, neat, pretty gardens and its own community. You can cycle between orchards and grazing cattle, and don’t forget a trip along the embankment to the tiny island of Skalø, with its hundreds of birds.

With just one ticket you can cruise between the islands in the Småland sea. Visit Fejø, Askø and Femø by car or on your bike – and as much as you want to. Tickets are valid for a whole week and start at DKK 590.
Askø and Lilleø snuggle in the bay, as if Lolland was hugging them. Their protected position is ideal for fruit-growing, and the climate is especially good for apples. There is a ferry to Askø from Bandholm, and from there it is less than five kilometres to Lilleø across the embankment.

The Storstrøm bridge 4
is 3,199 metres long, and held the record for many years as Denmark’s longest bridge. It links Zealand and Falster. The bridge is only nine metres wide, and carries two road lanes, a railway and a cycle lane. Building started in 1933.

Take a flask of coffee and enjoy it on the covered veranda of the General’s Summer House while the sky changes colour in the east. This charming thatched cottage was built by General J. F. Classen, and is a miniature copy of Liselund Old Castle on the island of Møn. It stands on the edge of the woods, right by the Baltic, in a very good spot for fishing. About 150 metres out in the water is a stone reef that attracts sea trout, turbot, herrings and garfish.
Right out on the most westerly point of Falster there is a little wood that few people know about. Follow the woodland path along the coast to privately owned Resle Woods and the car park at the end. The glorious green meadow or on the sand is the place to be when the sun turns red and sinks into the sea. Take your swimsuit – it is also a lovely place for a swim.

Nakskov Fjord
Some of Lolland’s most glorious sunsets can be seen over Nakskov Fjord. Spend the last hour of the day strolling by the harbour in Nakskov, or continue westwards along the spit of land at Albuen and see the sun sink among the islands.
Guldborgsund, Nykøbing Falster This is one place where you can see the sun come up and go down. On Frederik IX Bridge, which connects Lolland and Falster, Guldborgsund smoothly reflects the sun’s progress from early dawn to the last rays in the west. If you follow the coast westward, the little harbour and bridge at Guldborg is another place for a fine sunset.

Freshpicked holidays It is quite obvious why Lolland-Falster is compared with Provence in Denmark. There are fruit trees everywhere, while the mild climate and rich soil guarantee fruit and vegetables in a class of their own. You see an old table by the roadside, with rough-and-ready shelves made of wooden crates. Beside a vase or two of fresh flowers is the obligatory money box. Take a close look: this is one of dozens of roadside stalls on Lolland-Falster, where the vegetables are fresh and the newly picked fruit is bursting with juice. There may be a few jars of delicious home-made jam or newly harvested honey.
Boks-Food market and fruit festival Visit the Southern Islands’ fruit festival and the great food market in Sakskøbing. In the third weekend in September the town turns into a paradise of fresh fruit and creative cooks, all competing in inventiveness.
There are just as many possibilities as roadside stalls. That means plenty. They are everywhere on Lolland-Falster and the islands, Fejø, Femø and Askø. If you are looking for something particular, go for the farm shops, where the selection is wide, and you can buy everything for a meal: chicken or beef, wine and vegetables. Not to mention something sweet for dessert. Several places let you bring the whole family and visit the animals in the stables, or see how their products are made. In the autumn the apples are ready and the juice presses are busy. Find farm shops at www.visitlolland-falster.com

Mundo
It’s a new lease of life for the Telegraph building from 1906. During the last year it has been transformed from a dull backwater to an oasis at the centre of town. In summer there is an atmosphere of the south. The big green plants and the open barbecue create a really cosy feeling of holiday. The aromas of mussels in white wine and barbecued steaks waft through the air, simply inviting you to have a glass of something cool before the meal, says Benjamin Achton. In winter and on cooler days the basement is furnished as a gourmet restaurant in a rustic classic style with respect for the building. The tables are big and heavy and the chairs are comfortable. The idea of the restaurant is to give a total experience centred on the quality of the food and warm-hearted service. When it is too cold to sit on the terrace, things get lively in the cocktail bar. A mixture of guests come there – a bunch of friends on a girls’ night out, men in town with their club, or couples enjoying each other’s company over a Mojito or Strawberry Daiquiri. The idea for a restaurant on the square came by chance when businessman Benjamin Achton and two partners acquired the property. They had originally invested in the former Royal Post and Telegraph Service building with the intention of converting it to rented apartments. However, the plans changed, and after several requests they finally chose to convert the deep under-ground basement into a gourmet restaurant and cocktail bar. Benjamin Achton has several cafés and restaurants on his CV, so it was natural that he should take charge of the restaurant, and thus in summer 2015 the doors opened on Restaurant Flamez on Nykøbing Falster Torv.

The twelve stones
The Dodecalith on the north coast of Lolland “Long, long ago, when the seas rose and the waters flooded the homes of men, a tribe from the far south left their home country and set off northwards.” From Gunner Møller Pedersen’s legend of the Loler people.

#visitlollandfalster
The song of the Lolers In a magical, mythical universe the giant Dodecalith sculpture links the past with the present. It is a huge monument in stone to the Lolers, a modern myth about a tribe from the south. At the north-west of Lolland, where land and sea meet, and the most recent ice age has sculpted the landscape into hills and slopes, a completely unique work of scenic art is taking shape. The sculptor, Thomas Kadziola, and composer, Gunner Møller Pedersen, wanted to create a monument for the Lolers, and the Dodecalith (from the Greek for “twelve stones”) is the result. According to a modern myth, the Lolers were a tribe who came from the south.
A suggestion You can see other works by Thomas Kadziola around Lolland-Falster, for instance at Nykøbing Falster Theatre.
A circle of twelve eight-metre stone figures, all facing the centre, will form a fantasy universe with music among the stones in the landscape. The huge stone blocks are brought from Sweden, and Thomas Kadziola carves them in single pieces using a hammer and chisel. He brought the first block from Sweden in 2010. He has now raised four of the twelve stones on Ellevehøj near Kragenæs. There are already more than seventy burial mounds and passage graves in the area, and several beacon points. The site is freely accessible, and work is continually in progress.

Near Maribo Søndersø stands the manor of Søholt, and it would be hard to imagine a lovelier setting. One of its greatest attractions is the beautiful and well-preserved Baroque Garden, laid out in the 1690s. The closely cut hornbeam hedges marking some of the geometrical lines are more than 300 years old.

The history of the churches

Close to Slotsbryggen, by Nykøbing Falster harbour, is a fragment of wall, the only visible remains of Nykøbing Falster Castle. From 1594–1631 the castle was the home of the widowed Queen Sophie, mother of King Christian IV. It was sold for demolition in 1767. The queen came from Mecklenburg, and in her coat of arms was a special shade of pink, said to be the reason for the many pinkish churches on Lolland-Falster. In fact many myths and tales are told about the former homes of the nobility on Lolland-Falster. For centuries it was an accepted practice that the king rewarded his most faithful nobles with a manor. There are probably more of them on Lolland-Falster than any other part of Denmark, and they had a strong influence in forming the countryside.

Not many regions in Denmark have so many castles, big estates and manor houses as Lolland-Falster. Then there are about a hundred churches and abbeys. So you can really get the feel of Danish cultural history.
Stay at the abbey Breathe in the peace of the shining Maribo lakes and enjoy the hospitality of Saint Birgitta’s Abbey. There are several guest rooms, and the abbey serves meals by agreement. The whole of Maribo grew up in the early 14th century around the original Abbey of Saint Birgitta, and the magnificent cathedral was built on the remains of the old abbey church.

The Danish Chamber Players celebrate their 25-year jubilee in 2016. The ensemble is based in the main building of Fuglsang Manor, and over the years has been host to a long series of outstanding musicians, composers and conductors. A core of eight musicians make up the ensemble, and their repertoire extends from the Renaissance to the present day.
Take some time to explore the old manor estate landscapes. You might like to visit the Manor & Landscape exhibition at the Reventlow Museum at Pederstrup and enjoy the fantastic park.
Noblewoman and ferryman’s wife Marie Grubbe was born near Viborg in 1643, and was married at a very young age to Ulrik Frederik Gyldenløve, an illegitimate son of King Frederik III. The young woman had a strong appetite for love, and when her husband discovered she had been unfaithful to him several times, he demanded a divorce. Marie was given her dowry of 12,000 rixdollars, which she spent travelling abroad – with her brother-in-law. She then married the nobleman Palle Dyre, but started an affair with the coachman, Søren Sørensen Møller. She lived with him to the end of her days in Borrehuset, near Stubbekøbing, where the couple ran an inn and ferried passengers over Grønsund. Marie Grubbe died in 1718.
Danish Chamber Players The Danish Chamber Players have a classical repertory, and their purpose is to give concerts, teach and promote music in the municipalities in the area. The untraditional complement consists of flute, clarinet, bassoon, harp, piano, violin, viola and cello. We are based in the beautiful halls of Fuglsang Manor, visited by famous musicians and composers. In order to develop our music, we are moving in May 2016 into the new concert hall in the restored tenant’s house at Fuglsang. You can see the whole of Fuglsang when the Danish Chamber Players celebrate their 25th anniversary at the chamber music festival “Summer Music at Fuglsang” in August 2016. The music will strike sparks between past and present. www.chamberplayers.dk

The old market towns
Town jubilees 2016 will be a memorable year for two of Lolland’s market towns. Maribo will be celebrating its 600th jubilee, while Nakskov could have 750 candles in its birthday cake.
Nakskov and Maribo With its old merchants’ houses, warehouses and timber-framed buildings, Nakskov is still clearly an enterprising market town, as it has been for centuries. The town received its charter in 1266, but the region around Nakskov Fjord and its fertile upland have been inhabited for thousands of years. Trade flourished based on fishing, while more recently Nakskov has been one of Denmark’s major industrial towns. It is still the largest and most important market town on Lolland, and has kept up its impression of grandeur, easily seen on a walk along the wide, curving pedestrian street around the town centre. The cathedral city of Maribo gives a completely different impression, with its combination of shops and pretty, timber-framed houses. It has managed to keep its village innocence in the bustle of town life. Maribo developed around Saint Birgitta’s Abbey, which was founded in 1416. The ruins of the original abbey can still be seen near the cathedral.

VisitLolland-Falster.com
Nakskov through 750 years Wars, invasions and fires have raged through Nakskov over the centuries. However, the town on the west coast of Lolland recovers each time with renewed strength, and is now celebrating its 750th jubilee. In the middle of a church service on 19 June 1659, an explosive shell suddenly burst through the roof of Sankt Nikolai church in Nakskov. No one was hurt, but the shell split a gravestone in two and shattered the altarpiece. The Swedes were on the march. A year earlier, King Frederik III was forced to relinquish large areas of Danish soil to the Swedish King Karl X Gustav. The Swedish king was greedy, and wanted the rest of the country.
Denmark prevailed, however so did Nakskov, from sheer stubbornness; more than one foreign army has entered the country through Nakskov during its history. Traders saw opportunities too in the centrally positioned coastal town, and for thousands of years the “Woods on the Neck” have been a popular place to live and trade. Nakskov received its charter as a market town in 1266, and can thus celebrate its 750th jubilee this year. It is worth a visit – everyone can find something of interest.
The soul of Lolland A deeply personal impression of Nakskov through a photographic exhibition, the Soul of Lolland. The exhibition can be seen all through June. There are more cultural events on the programme for the Culture Festival from 1–7 August.
Jubilee week Nakskov’s jubilee will begin officially on 25 April with an event at Nakskov Theatre. The whole of week 31 will be full of celebrations, with a town fair and activities for all the family. From May 14–16 there will be a spectacular display in the harbour when the Wooden Ships society holds its Whitsun meeting there.
Art in Nakskov The town’s 750th jubilee is being marked with several major art projects. John Kørner is setting up four works in bronze and aluminium, while Leif Sylvester is decorating a housing block with a huge painting on the gable. A lookout tower will be placed on Hestehoved Beach, and artists Randi & Katrine, known for their amazing fantasy worlds, are creating a playground. On 16–19 June, 21 artists will practise their arts in private homes and gardens.

Lively towns
Maribo’s 600 year jubilee
Few towns on Lolland-Falster have lovelier settings than Maribo – which grew up round the Maribo lakes from the village that developed beside St. Birgitta’s Abbey in 1416. The early monastic church has been replaced by the impressive cathedral we see today. This year it is 600 years since a group of monks were sent from the abbey in Vadstena in Sweden to the village of Skimminge on Lolland to found an abbey. The village grew rapidly and took the name of Maribo after the Abbey – home of the Virgin Mary. Naturally, the 600th jubilee of the founding of Maribo is being celebrated in various ways round the town. There will be a celebration service on the day when the cathedral was founded.
The market town of Maribo What was it like “in the olden days”? The Open Air Museum at Maribo gives a good impression. It brings back bygone days when most things were made by hand. See the active workshops, watch the steam engines and learn how craftsmen worked before there was any electricity.

Mediaeval market and spare ribs feast The Maribo jubilee will be celebrated all through the summer. On the calendar of events there is a mediaeval market, a ‘bone-chewing feast’ of spare ribs, and celebrations round the station and museum railway. There are also theatrical performances, classical concerts and open-air opera. The traditional singer Erik Grip will drop by and give a concert on Hestø in the Maribo lakes.

A delightful town in historic surroundings, with good places to eat, and natural beauty - this is the old market town of Sakskøbing on Lolland. The long, narrow fjord penetrates far inland from the Småland sea on the north coast of the island. It ends in Sakskøbing harbour, just a few hundred metres from the market square, but the river runs into it across the town, and from the very earliest days played an important part in the development and trade in the town, strengthening its status as a market town.

Town life and tourism
Historically, Sakskøbing was first mentioned in writing in 1230, and for several centuries it was one of the most important trading centres on Lolland. Town life is still lively in the old streets, with plenty of good specialist shops. Look in on the Tourist Information office on the market square, and hear about Sakskøbing’s fascinating history.
Sleep well
Historic Oreby Mølle and Radstedhus both provide accommodation for groups, such as company events. Radstedhus also does Bed & Breakfast, and at Hotel Saxkjøbing on the market square there are good beds right in the heart of the town.
Gourmet eating and great atmosphere
There are several first-class places to eat in Sakskøbing, such as the central Hotel Saxkjøbing and the attractively sited Oreby Kro. Both show what can be achieved with Lolland’s fine local ingredients. Visit the brewery at Krenkerup Estate, where you can enjoy the local beer with a light meal.

Shop your way down the long pedestrian street in Nykøbing Falster with fashion, bookshops and sports equipment. Don’t forget Klostertorv with the historic church, and continue between the old houses and fashion shops to the fascinating old specialist shops in Frisegade. If you are hungry or thirsty, there is plenty of choice. The café in the old water tower is a good option, or perhaps the exciting outdoor restaurant, Flamez, in the market place. In Nakskov, it is an experience in itself just to walk down the wide pedestrian street between the fine old buildings.
Marius Mortensen
Few shops in Nakskov have a stronger sense of style, and here are fashion clothes, art craftsmanship and a delicatessen under one roof. You find brands such as by Lassen and Malene Birger in sophisticated and tasteful arrangements, while a gentle aroma of coffee and chocolate tempts you into the delicatessen section.
>
Tip A visit to Gedser Odde can easily be combined with a good meal too, perhaps at Restaurant Najaden in Denmark’s southernmost harbour.
Marielyst Shop for fabulous sportswear at the big Ny Form warehouse outlet, or find fashion bargains at Casa Italy. Marielyst has plenty to offer besides sun and sand, and there are lots of great places for shopping. When hunger sets in, it would be hard to find more cafés and restaurants in one place on Lolland-Falster than round the fine renovated square. Try the local tapas at Toni’s, for instance, or a fresh sandwich.

Take it easy
Oases in town
You could work up an appetite by the lake in the castle park, with dead trees silhouetted against the sky. Don’t miss out on a visit to the old fishermen’s cottages in Nysted, neatly kept in idyllic pastel colours with flowers in the gardens, exuding village charm. You can also visit the house where the poet Emil Aarestrup lived from 1827–1838. There is a harbour atmosphere in Stubbekøbing too, where the little ferry Ida invites you on a trip to Bogø and back. Or just enjoy a good ice cream and fresh air walking round the fine park to the pavilion for a view.

Restaurant Kongsnæs
All summer, local tourist associations on Lolland-Falster recommend exciting arrangements and fun for all the family. Visit one of the old market towns or bigger shopping centres, get ideas from the local tourist office or find inspiration at www.visitlolland-falster.com
At the edge of Stubbekøbing, right where the sea meets the land, is one of Falster’s best steak-house restaurants. It is well known for the fine cuisine, excellent service, and not least the atmosphere in the evening sun looking out over the shining Grønsund to Bogø and Møn. Make sure you book a table!
>
One of Lolland-Falster’s most beautiful places for a breather is Nysted Harbour. Enjoy a good meal or a light lunch with a view over the bay, graceful sailing boats and the old castle at Aalholm.
The Cottage Comfortable English country style on the edge of Nysted on the south coast of Lolland. The Cottage is a hotel and restaurant with a good menu based on seasonal local produce. Combined with the beautiful natural surroundings and magnificent view, it is hard to find anywhere more enjoyable.

Foaming draught beer, the air full of swinging rhythms... and everything is set for the Maribo Jazz Festival, the 29th this year. New Orleans and big bands in endless succession, and it happens every year in the third weekend in July.
Everything rocks on the Savanna on June 18 and 19, when Knuthenborg Safari Park and Danish Folk Aid set the scene for Safari Live. Several of Denmark’s most popular live bands make sure it’s wild fun for everyone – from toe-tapping mice to tramping elephants.
TIP There is often free live music on the town square in Nykøbing Falster, with several good cafés and places to eat round the podium. Don’t miss the Apple Flower Festival on Lilleø in May.

Surrounded by nature – seen from above
Sky camp
Sleep between the trees while the owls are out hunting, right close to the woodland animals. 64
VisitLolland-Falster.com
#visitlollandfalster
Float between the trees A little cluster of wide tents hang right between the trees in Systofte woods, in unspoilt natural surroundings. This is TREELIFE SKYCAMP, where guests can stay the night a couple of metres above the ground. The floating tents are suspended tautly between the trees, so that the bases are firm and comfortable to lie on. There is room for a family of two adults and two children in each. The man who thought up this unusual idea is Tejs Sigsgaard, who gets his tents from the UK. He owns the woods, and besides the tents, there is a well-fitted-out building in the area with baths and toilet facilities, a kitchen, seating space, and ready packed “survival kits”. If you feel like spending a night or two between the trees, you can book a tent on the website. You then receive a code for the door and a box that contains everything you need. In the box there are things like saucepans for the bonfires, a saw, an axe and a range of kitchen utensils. Before you arrive, Tejs hangs the tent up, and if you can’t all sleep in one tent, there is a family area with several tents close together. Otherwise the tents are scattered between the trees, so you can feel completely alone in the woods. Se more details here: www.visitlolland-falster.com

Tivoli Had enough of the beach and the sun? You can easily visit Copenhagen. The big city is only about an hour’s drive from the motorway bridge to Zealand, or there are good rail connections. Shop all along Strøget, have lunch in Nyhavn, and round off with a great evening in Tivoli. It is truly magical when everything lights up.

Bonbon-Land
This is Denmark’s craziest theme park, where you can meet Viktor the Water Worm and Svend Svingarm. Bonbon-Land started as a sweet factory, and it is probably the only theme park based on the idea of a ‘Dog Fart’ – a sweet with a highly individual appearance. Since 1992 it has expanded and become famous as one of Denmark’s most popular amusement parks, and you can still ride on the Dog-Fart roller coaster.
