LOTS OF EXCITING NEW ATTRACTIONS
NEW IN 2019 On Lolland-Falster, we are always striving to renew and improve our tourist attractions so that they are always worth visiting regardless of whether you have been here before. This year there are a number of exciting new attractions.
Museum Obscurum
HUGE dinosaur at Knuthenborg Last year, Knuthenborg Safari Park opened its Dinosaur Forest, which proved to be a big hit with the public. This year, they have expanded with Europe’s largest dinosaur – a full 47 metres long! The long-necked Patagotitan mayorum is probably the largest animal that ever lived on earth. You will find it in the Dinosaur Forest, where this year a flock of pterodactyls has also taken up residence in the treetops. Knuthenborg has also established a new and improved version of the popular nature playground in Limpopoland, where children can play and climb. Griffenholm – a new attraction at the Medieval Centre This spring, the Medieval Centre is launching a new and exciting concept! At the moment, we are not able to fully reveal what it is, but we can promise that it will be exciting, unusual and instructive. It will be a journey back in time in the world of the imagination, focused on monsters, superstition, belief and supernatural things in the Middle Ages. The new attraction is aimed at schools and regular visitors to the centre, and in the evening Griffenholm will offer "escape rooms" and "mystery tours".
Crocodile Zoo
Quiz and find your way through The Lolland-Falster Labyrinth Find your way through the LollandFalster Labyrinth by answering a series
of questions. The newly opened labyrinth in Toreby, Lolland, invites you to a day of fun and fresh air for the whole family. The labyrinth is in a large pine forest with narrow paths through which you must find your way. There are many different themes, depending on the difficulty level that you want. See alligators and pumas in their natural environment Crocodile Zoo near Eskilstrup on Falster has Europe's largest collection of crocodiles and alligators. The zoo has now been expanded and has an outdoor alligator enclosure and lake, where you can observe the terrifying reptiles. Crocodile Zoo is also the only place in Denmark where you can see pumas – in the brand new puma facility. Break into the museum and discover the secret Since 2017, Museum Obscurum in Nykøbing has drawn visitors into a world on the fringe of reality. New for visitors this year is the escape room, where the focus is the occult and mysterious. The escape room is set in a dark Victorian apartment that belonged to the adventuring doctor and merchant, Cornelius. Here, you don’t have to find your way OUT, but rather break INTO the apartment to discover Cornelius’s deepest secret – we can’t tell you more without revealing too much!

DODEKALITTEN
ART UNDER AN OPEN SKY
In a field in northern Lolland, 12 tall monoliths rise up, giving everyone, whether locals or visitors, a sense of grandeur, proximity and beauty... In a field on northern Lolland, 12 tall menhirs stand. The Lolland ’Stonehenge’ has been named Dodekalitten and celebrates the legendary people, the ’Lolers’, believed to have come to Lolland over 5000 years ago. Back then, they erected 12 stone monoliths in a circle, and it is claimed that the stones regularly sang together. Beautiful and alluring choral singing, which entranced, and frightened, the locals.
10
VisitLolland-Falster.com
By midsummer, we are told, the song was especially powerful, and the brave locals who ventured close enough on midsummer nights reported floating women who danced around and inside the stone circle. The artist behind the Dodekalitten is Thomas Kadziola, and you can also see his carved stone faces in the cityscape by Nykøbing F. Theatre and on the waterfront in Nakskov.
The multiton granite blocks are brought over from Sweden and transported to Lolland in one piece, after which the faces are carved out using hammer and chisel. So far, Thomas Kadziola has carved five faces, but it does not matter that this process takes several years when Dodekalitten might last a millenium.

This is a place where everyone says hello to each other – there is togetherness and intimacy and time to enjoy life, nature and human company.
Fejø – fruit and good experiences
Fejø is a small, diverse local community where you will find the farmhouses, tractors and idyll of bygone days side by side with a lively community with modern agriculture, small businesses and an engaging local population. The island is known for its fruit growing, with its world-class apples, pears and plums in particular, but also figs, almonds and mulberries. The island’s producers make delicious jams, juices and honey, which can be bought from the island’s small roadside stalls and farm shops. Fejø is also home to Denmark’s best cider producers. Drop into
Fejø Cider, for example, and taste their amazing products. Fejø offers outdoor activities such as kayaking, hiking, fishing, cycling and, of course, swimming at the blue flag Sletteren beach. The island’s wellstocked grocery shop makes it easy to be a tourist in Fejø. You should also visit Fejø Mill (which serves as a tourist information centre and cafe) and the island’s other eating establishments.
Femø – where the sky kisses the earth
The first thing you encounter on Femø is the wellmaintained harbour, which is visited by more than 3,000 boats every year. At the harbour, you will find the harbour office as well as tourist information, an ice cream shop and a grocery shop, where you can also rent bikes. Here you will also find the blue flag beach. Femø is known for its Women’s Camp and, not least, Femø Jazz Festival, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. Femø Inn offers delicious food,

Askø-Lilleø – oozing island charm
In spite of its small size, Askø has it all. It has views of fields, beaches and exciting wading birds on the expansive salt marshes. It has charm, community and light, and the island is at its most beautiful when the apple trees are in blossom. Askø is connected by a narrow dike to Lilleø, where you will also find large apple, pear, peach and plum plantations, as well as vineyards. The harbour has a working harbour house where you can rent bikes to cycle around on the two islands or kayaks to enjoy them from the sea. You can also book a guided cycling tour on which you will hear fabulous stories about the island. In the small grocery shop, the volunteer staff will tempt you with apple juice, coffee and cake as well as everyday groceries. Don’t miss Askø Museum and the small church with the Gothic chancel. The island also offers beautiful galleries and roadside stalls. EXPERIENCE HISTORY Maribo Miniature Town Marvel at the cultural and historical gem that is Maribo Town Hall from 1857 and the construction of Maribo Cathedral, at the exhibition.
TAKE THE TRAIN BACK IN TIME A FAMILY TRIP JUST LIKE IN THE OLD DAYS The railway between Maribo and Bandholm opened 150 years ago. It was Lolland’s first railway, and it established a better connection between the market town in the middle of Lolland and Knuthenborg’s harbour in Bandholm. Subsequently, many busy freight and passenger trains used the line, and the stationmaster in Bandholm worked from morning to night. Much has changed, but visitors can still experience the atmosphere of a trip between Maribo and Bandholm. The vintage train runs during the tourist season, and it is a wonderful experience to sit in the old carriages, watch the scenery glide past, smell the coal smoke, listen to the sound of the steam whistle, and arrive at the old station in Bandholm where many activities and exhibitions awaits.

MARIBO – ALWAYS WORTH A VISIT...
DIVINE BY NATURE The monastery town of Maribo is an active commercial centre, which offers plenty of culture, history and nature. Maribo Lakes Nature Park is literally a part of the town.
RICH IN HISTORY
Beautiful lakes, abundant wildlife and picturesque scenery. Maribo Lakes Nature Park has it all. The lakes are located in a magnificent landscape within walking distance of the town, and there are spectacular outdoor experiences waiting for you there, whether you have come to study the fascinating bird life, take a guided tour on the boat Anemonen, or simply enjoy the peaceful nature.
Maribo has a rich history dating back to the 15th century’s monasteries, and therefore, the cathedral is also a natural starting point for a historical walking tour of the town. On selected days you can walk around with the night watchman, where he will sing verses in the streets like they did in the old days. Museumsbanen takes guests to and from Bandholm on Denmark’s oldest running steam locomotive. Maribo County Museum, located right next to Maribo Station, exhibits art and history. Here you can see some of the discoveries made during the excavations of the Fehmarn Belt Fixed Link.

EVERYTHING IS WITHIN WALKING DISTANCE
Kaj Munk wrote this about his home town: “It is possible that there are just as beautiful places in the world, but there are none more beautiful than Maribo.” When visiting the town, you will find that nature, trade, culture and experiences are closely linked and within walking distance... but allow plenty of time. The tourist office can recommend activities and experiences.
LEONORA CHRISTINA The story of Leonora Christina Ulfeldt, Christian IV’s daughter, is an important part of the history of Denmark, but she is also part of Maribo’s history. In the final years of her life, the princess lived at the monastery in Maribo. Visit Maribo Cathedral and feel the presence of history at the Maribo monastery ruins. The monastery was founded by the Bridgettine Order, and Bridgettine nuns still live in the town. They run a retreat close to nature, where you can rent a room for short or long period.

The wide, white boat with the Danish flag flying at the stern does not at first glance look like a time machine. However, after less than half an hour on the Post Boat you will be back in the Middle Ages on Slotø, where King Hans built the fortified shipyard of Engelsborg in 1509. Both King Hans and Christian IV used the island and the shipyard to build some of the world’s largest ships of their time. In the footsteps of a polar researcher The Post Boat continues its journey through time and docks at Enehøje, which was home to some of the first people who came to Denmark. The polar researcher Peter Freuchen lived on the island from 1926 to 1940. Here, he sat in “The Blue
Smithy” editing the magazine Ude og Hjemme and writing his books. On the island of Albuen is a medieval herring market, a pilot’s house, a lighthouse and fishermen’s houses. It is no coincidence that the wide, white Marielyst Beach has repeatedly been voted the best in Denmark. With its excellent swimming, lifeguard tower, large holiday park, and lots of activities and eateries, the beach has something for everyone. To the south, not far from Marielyst, is Fribadestranden Bøtø, which is an official naturist beach.
Nysted Beach, also called Skansen, is named after the ruins of the nearby fortifications. The beach is a few hundred metres from the harbour and is very well maintained; seaweed is removed and fresh sand is added several times a year, so it’s always inviting.
Along the south coast of Lolland, the inviting sandy beaches are like pearls on a string, and you can easily find five lovely beaches to visit in five days. To the west lies Albuen beach, where you can also experience the breathtaking Nakskov Fjord. Maglehøj Beach is cleaned every third week by local associations, and at Kramnitse the beach has a bathing jetty and wheelchair access, and is suitable for surfing. A little further east is Bredfjed Beach. Here you will find a very child-friendly beach with rare wild plants, and on the other side of Rødbyhavn and the beach at Lalandia, you will find Hyldtofte, a lovely wide sandy beach with dunes.
Denmark’s warmest swimming water can be found at Hestehoved Beach at Nakskov. A quiet, child-friendly sandy beach in the beautiful countryside out towards Nakskov Fjord and campsite. It has great places to eat and is close to the marina, which also offers beach volleyball and minigolf.
On the charming island of Fejø, you will find the beautiful sandy beach Sletteren Strand with its view over the waters of Smålandshavet and its rich birdlife. You will find a bathing jetty, toilets and picnic benches. The beach is kept clean and tidy by Fejø’s Scouts.
Hesnæs Strand – beach meets forest
Unique white sandy beach with blue sea to the front and steep cliffs and green forest to the rear. Park behind the embankment near Hesnæs Harbour and walk a little way to the south beside the forest. Here, you will find the perfect sandy beach by the cliff. Take the steps up the cliff to Pomle Nakke Restaurant when you feel the need for an ice cream.

Bøtø Forest, the bird sanctuary and Hundeskoven (Dogs’ Forest). Bøtø Forest, south of Marielyst, is a special nature experience. The 155-hectare forest has been transformed from pine forest to light forest with open plains. Wild horses and Scottish Highland cattle keep back growth to the benefit of the forest’s rich wildlife, which includes the white-tailed eagle, nine different kinds of bat and rare butterflies. There are cycling and walking trails in the forest. In the northern part of Bøtø Forest lies the Bird Sanctuary, which can be viewed from two bird hides. Near the bird sanctuary lies Hundeskoven (Dogs’ Forest). Fishing The entire Baltic Sea coast is good for inshore fishing. Depending on the season, anglers can catch sea trout, garfish, cod and flatfish. A valid fishing licence is required. In addition to this, there are put-and-take lakes and canal fishing. Denmark’s largest wooden terrace The square in Marielyst is Denmark’s largest wooden terrace. The square has a Mediterranean atmosphere with outdoor seating for the restaurants and live music. The restaurants and live music cater to all tastes. Activities and entertainment Marielyst offers a wealth of activities. Options include minigolf, paintball, bowling, go-karting and Segways. GEDSER AND GEDESBY
DENMARK’S MOST SOUTHERLY POINT
A visit to Denmark’s most southerly point is an exciting experience for the whole family. Gedser offers wild countryside, exciting activities and delicious culinary sensations. Feel the power of nature Gedser Odde is Denmark’s most southerly point, and when you stand here, with the wind blowing through your hair, it is impossible not to feel respect for the power of nature. On one side of the point it could be completely calm while on the other the wind may be howling and the Baltic waves crashing against the shore. Have a walk on the beach and see what washes up – you may be lucky enough to find amber or fossils. While visiting the point, you can also drop in at the former naval base, which was part of Denmark’s defences against the Communist Bloc for more than 40 years. Discover the past In the town of Gedser you will find the Black

Geomuseum, which invites you into a world of exciting animals from the past. Here you can discover the fossils and amber found at Gedser Odde. A visit to the museum is a journey through the evolution of life on the planet. In the footsteps of the Olsen Gang Gedser’s newest attraction is the Yellow Mansion, formerly the signal box at Copenhagen Goods Yard but best known from the 1975 Danish comedy The Olsen Gang on the Track. Since 2017, the Gedser Depot railway museum has taken good care of it, and they invite visitors in to have a look back at railway and film history. Here you will find out all about the golden age of railway and get an up-close look at the old carriages.
Maybe you’ll be lucky enough to find amber or fossils Café with more Have lunch at Toldcaféen – a nice retro café experience with great food. Enjoy a locally brewed beer with a delicious open sandwich in the small square in front of the café in the company of the Olsen Gang. The café also offers activities such as Viking games, petanque and swingball. Toldcaféen is a social enterprise run by the Toldhuset assisted living facility.

Accommodation close to nature The nature centre Gedser Nature Centre is an ideal place to stay for nature lovers. The area invites you to enjoy a walk or cycle on the small paths. You can play softball on the lawn or enjoy the tranquillity of the sea to the sound of the diverse birdlife. You can spend the night in one of the shelters, in your own tent at the campsite or in a rented room at the old Nature School. Water tower with views From the top of Gedser Water Tower you have a fantastic view over Denmark’s Southern Point, the town of Gedser, the ferry harbour, the marina and the beautiful surroundings. With binoculars you can watch for seals, and in clear weather you can see all the way to Nysted, Rostock and the offshore wind farm at Rødsand. Historic village atmosphere Sydfalster’s oldest village, Gedesby, oozes village idyll and history. The village was first mentioned in 1135, and it is said that Tsar Peter the Great landed at the then Rostock Ferry Port. Gedesby Mill is a Dutch mill dating back more than 100 years. It is beautifully situated on the road into Gedesby, and is definitely worth a visit. Food with the most beautiful view Restaurant Najaden is located at Gedser’s charming marina and offers views of Rødsand seal sanctuary, Guldborgsund and Ålholm Castle. STEP INTO THE WORLD OF ANIMALS A pair of penguins waddle around cautiously at the water’s edge, while the rest have fun in the water. Eventually, however, it becomes too tempting and the pair throw themselves head first into the cold water. Over by the meerkats, the guard meerkat keeps watch over you while the rest of the pack digs holes and enjoys themselves. At Guldborgsund Zoo & Botanical Garden, you are invited into the animal world. The zoo is arranged so that you can enjoy seeing the animals as close to their natural habitats as possible. On the Australian plain, kangaroos bounce past as emus root around in the earth for plants and insects. In the Asian enclosure, otters play pranks while Ib, the turkey vulture, watches on from above. In the rainforest, where the humidity is high, cotton-top tamarins sit around in the treetops while giant turtles and crested partridges wander around in the depths of the forest. In the footsteps of dinosaurs Take a thrilling journey through time in the Dino Garden and see what it was like when dinosaurs were alive 65 million years ago. Try out the exciting climbing course, which runs through ferns and paddock pipes, but watch out for the dinosaur eggs and rampaging dinosaurs! In the large dino sandbox you can find beautiful dinosaur fossils and footprints. Monkey business and relaxation The playful monkeys are not the only ones who are allowed to climb around. In the Nature Playground you can get in touch with your inner monkey on the large obstacle course. If the family is up for fun games and competitions, all these can be found around the garden. For when you get hungry, there are plenty of cosy corners where you can enjoy your own food, while the café is open throughout the summer. Get close to the animals At Guldborgsund Zoo & Botanical Garden you can get really close to all sorts of animals and plants. In the Children’s Zoo you can pet a goat, and even the stubborn donkeys will gladly come over and say hello. Watch out for the five naughty thieves, also known as the squirrel monkeys, who will certainly be watching out for you. If the animals could talk, they would say: it’s wildly wonderful!

MEDIEVAL CENTRE At the Medieval Centre in Nykøbing, you can experience what it was like to live in Denmark around the year 1400. Visit the medieval market town of Sundkøbing, where townspeople live as they did in the Middle Ages, and experience history first hand. Go on a journey through time As you step through the gates of Sundkøbing, you are taken on a journey back to the year 1409. You stand in the middle of the village street, where you can hear the blacksmith’s hammer and the cock crowing, smell the bonfires and see the women peddling their goods in the square. Have a chat with the townspeople and hear about their lives and how they see the world. Medieval tournaments and war machines The immense medieval war machines are an experience in themselves. For example, see the world’s oldest and perhaps largest trebuchet in action – it can throw stones, dead animals or even humans as far as 300 metres! Also, don’t miss the spectacular jousting tournament, where the town’s knight, Sir Henrik Svane, invites foreign knights to duel for honour and glory. Future technological wonders See, try and discover some of the great medieval inventions, such as the car, the lift
and the machine of perpetual motion. In the Technology Park you can test a number of the technological marvels of the Middle Ages in full scale – even the ones that never really materialised because they did not work quite as intended. Magical creatures of the Middle Ages In The Magical Forest you can experience some of the supernatural beings of the Middle Ages. Meet, for example, the Hel horse: a ghost horse with just three legs, heralding death in the family. Or meet the Nix, who took little children. Many creatures dwell in the magical forest – pay them a visit if you dare! Eat as they did in the Middle Ages You can combine the trip with a visit to the Golden Swan, where medieval food is served using ingredients which were around in the Middle Ages. The inn has an open fireplace, a servants’ hall with wooden benches and plank tables, and Sir Svane’s grand banquet hall.

A CHANGE IN LEADERSHIP FOR THE REVUE
THE NYKØBING FALSTER REVUE A revue has to be popular and enjoyable, say the new directors of the Revue. ”One of the best ever revues in the country,” one critic wrote about last year’s revue. Previous years’ revues also received good critique, which means there are always high expectations of Denmark’s second-largest revue and one of the region’s biggest tourist attractions, with more than 30,000 visitors every summer. Legendary actor Flemming Krøll has left the stage after 28 years, but he is still producing. He has handed the reins to two new directors, actress Pernille Schrøder and band leader Mickey Pless, both highly experienced in the genre and old friends of the Nykøbing F. Revue, in which they featured many times.
The successful formula remains unchanged in this year’s revue: ”The Revue must have what a revue usually has: laughter, musicality, charm, elegance and reflection,” says Pernille Schrøder. A good Danish revue can surprise, offend and seduce. It can challenge the complacency of the Danes and deliver political messages and humorous sketches. It combines song and dance with social satire and jokes... and it has to be experienced live at the theatre! This year’s revue at Nykøbing F. Theatre features Henrik Koefoed, Pernille Schrøder, Troels Malling, Rikke Buch Bendtsen, Rasmus Krogsgaard and Mickey Pless.
TIP The Revue will run from 13 June to 24 August. Find out more at www.nyk-revy.dk

FACTS Lolland-Falster is known for its amazing food, but the mild climate of the South Sea Islands also makes it ideal for producing beer and wine. Frederiksdal Kirsebærvine winery, Krenkerup Brewery and Østergaard Vinmageri winery are all known for their high quality and great tastes. Local beers and wines can be purchased in many shops and speciality shops, but it’s also a great experience to visit the actual sites.
DRINK LOCAL QUALITY
A DROP OF LOLLAND-FALSTER Frederiksdal Kirsebærvin – a special experience The Frederiksdal winery produces cherry wine like no one else! Small, black Stevns cherries are the backbone of production. These enjoy optimal growing conditions at Frederiksdal – and you can taste it! It’s not only Danes who have become aware of Frederiksdal’s unique cherry wine. It is exported to China, the US and a number of European countries. Frederiksdal Estate is Scandinavia’s largest winery, and most definitely worth a visit. The estate’s history goes back to 1305, and on a tour of the winery you can see the special production methods and taste their wine from the barrels.

Østergaard Vinmageri – the earth’s best wines Østergaard’s wines are hand-crafted special wines, shaped by the fine Lolland soil. The good soil and mild climate grow some of Denmark’s best fruits and berries. The winemaker brings out the best of the soil’s qualities in the wines, so it is no exaggeration to call these the earth’s best wines.
At Krenkerup Eatery you can enjoy a freshly brewed beer in the estate’s beautiful granary, overlooking the brewery.
Østergaard Vinmageri produces white and rosé wines of high quality, and is also acclaimed for its exciting fruit wines.
Krenkerup Brewery also offers guided tours where you can learn how Krenkerup brews according to the Reinheitsgebot – a unique brewing method which imposes strict demands of pure raw materials and no use of additives and preservatives.
A visit to the vineyard (near Stokkemarke) and a tour give great insight into how the wine is produced – and of course there are tastings.

HOTEL SAXKJØBING
HISTORIC CHARM AND CULINARY EXPERIENCES... History oozes out of the walls, and the atmosphere is relaxed and cosy. A visit to Hotel Saxkjøbing is both luxurious and down to earth.
Feel the presence of history For more than 200 years, Hotel Saxkjøbing – one of the oldest hotels in Denmark – has been a natural and inviting gathering place for farmers and townsfolk around the old market town of Lolland. The hotel is right in the square, close to the fjord and it offers visitors a genuine, cosy and warm atmosphere. Modern hotel in historic buildings The listed historic buildings have been carefully restored. The restaurant, lounge, function room, patio and a number of rooms have been renovated, and the hotel’s modern facilities make it more inviting than ever. The hotel’s 32 rooms

– double rooms and slightly larger family rooms – are to be found along narrow corridors and in out-of-the-way nooks. Local ingredients and special dining experiences You’ll eat well at Hotel Saxkjøbing. Since 2006 the hotel has been owned by famous chef and entrepreneur Claus Meyer, and his food philosophy permeates the menu. The hotel restaurant is open to all for lunch and dinner. The kitchen prepares food of the highest quality using seasonal ingredients from local farms, fishermen and food producers. The menu offers traditional Danish meals – tasty, everyday dishes typically taken from Claus Meyer’s
Almanac cookbook – and gastronomic menus which change with the seasons. Specially selected, local, freshly harvested ingredients of high quality (which are also organic wherever possible) provide an extraordinary dining experience. Buy local specialities from the Farm Shop Stepping off the street straight into the hotel’s own Farm Shop is a bit like entering an old-fashioned grocery shop. Here you can buy quality products from Lolland-Falster and from other passionate food producers all around Denmark. Vegetables, fruit, meat, chocolate, beer, wine, juices and much more. The Farm

Shop also has a small café area where you can enjoy local specialties, a wonderful lunch or just a coffee. An obvious stop for cyclists Hotel Saxkjøbing is also an ideal stop for cyclists. When staying at Hotel Saxkjøbing you are located in central Lolland, just a short distance from a wealth of sights and beautiful scenery – for example, the beautiful Sakskøbing Fjord or the popular Knuthenborg Safari Park. Overnighting cyclists are offered secure bicycle storage and a comfortable bed, while passing cyclists can drop in for a delicious lunch or a quick tipple.
The hidden courtyard Whether or not you are a guest at the hotel, the doors are open to the hotel’s idyllic old courtyard. It is shielded by the hotel’s beautiful half-timbered facades and paved with thousands of old stones. Here you can relax surrounded by newly planted apple trees and green herb beds, which contribute to the open-air cosiness as well as to the excellent taste of our lunch and dinner menus. You can also enjoy the pride of the region – a local beer brewed at the nearby Krenkerup Estate. We would be delighted to tell you all about the hotel’s many quirky details and its interesting past.
And if you want to explore our wonderful region, we know all the best places, including the locals’ secret favourite spots. The island’s gathering place If you love fruit, you simply have to visit Hotel Saxkjøbing in September. The South Sea Islands Fruit Festival is Denmark’s juiciest festival and receives thousands of visitors every year. The square outside the hotel has a wonderful southern harvest market atmosphere with its passionate fruit growers, producers of juices, wines, vinegars, jams and much more. For the festival, the hotel offers both overnight accommodation and a special dinner celebrating the region’s apples.

AS YOU GO The new Baltic Sea Route is open Lolland-Falster’s contribution to the 800-km-long Baltic Sea Route is characterised by beautiful manor landscapes, cosy farm shops and many kilometres stretching out over the dikes. On 5th af May 2018, the newly-signposted and improved N8 cycle route was launched under the name Baltic Sea Route. On Lolland-Falster, the route stretches from Tårs on western Lolland to Stubbekøbing on eastern Falster and on to Bogø via the IDA ferry, one of Denmark’s oldest wooden ferries. On Lolland-Falster, the route was opened in the best mayoral manner and has since been cycled by countless journalists, bloggers and cycling enthusiasts, all of whom have returned with red cheeks and a smile on their face. Experience the section of the Baltic Sea Route which runs through Lolland-Falster for yourself, giving you the best views of the Baltic Sea, as for much of the route you will be cycling just a few metres from the water’s edge and looking out over kilometres of beautiful, unique beaches. The route’s section from Tårs to Rødby is characteristic of Denmark’s longest cycle path on a dike. The next section heads
inland past Maribo Lakes Nature Park, Sakskøbing with its fjord and numerous dining experiences and on towards Marielyst, which offers beach life and a cosy pit-stop in the square. The final section of the route, towards Stubbekøbing, is said by many to be something rather special with its Danish beech forests, gentle coastline and historic buildings around Hæsnæs. The route onward towards Bogø to the north includes the IDA Ferry crossing, which is extremely popular with cyclists, as you cannot cycle over the Farø Bridge. Cycling with the IDA Ferry Cycling enthusiasts Michael Cardow and Michael Hansen frequently use the pleasant crossing, which, in addition to the Baltic Sea route, connects most international cycle routes to Denmark. ”We began a cycling odyssey 13 years ago where every year we pick up from where we left off the previous year. It all started in Copenhagen, took us on to Paris, and most recently this year to Malaga and Alicante,” says Michael Hansen, adding that each time they enjoy the IDA Ferry crossing, as it offers a well-deserved break from the long routes that need to be cycled.
• Visit Larsson Cykler in Maribo or go to www.larsson-cykler.dk and get a good deal on bicycle purchases, hire or repair. • Download the app ”Donkey Republic” and enjoy self-service bicycle hire at selected cycle points all over Lolland-Falster. • See sailing timetables and prices for the IDA Ferry at www.bogoe-stubbekoebing.dk • As well as connecting the Baltic Sea Route, The IDA Ferry also connects the Copenhagen-Berlin cycle route.
Bicycle hire at Larsson Cykler in Maribo If you haven’t brought your bicycle on holiday with you, you can rent mountain bikes and other high-spec bicycles in several places on Lolland-Falster. Larsson Cykler is just one of the places that offers short and long-term bicycle hire, as well as repairs, so your equipment is in good order when you head out on your next cycling adventure on Lolland-Falster.

The picturesque little town comes as a delightful surprise with its narrow, winding streets, idyllic houses and atmospheric harbour. The countryside around Nysted Nysted is located at the head of Nysted Cove – a beautiful natural harbour on Lolland’s southern shores. The area is a Ramsar and Natura 2000 conservation site with abundant bird, animal and plant life which is best enjoyed on foot or bicycle. There are numerous cycle routes and walking trails in the woods, along the coast and around the town. At the entrance to the cove is the redoubt system and Nysted Beach – a lovely park area, perfect for families who want to get out and enjoy the countryside and the water. The beach is a child-friendly sandy beach. Associations Although Nysted is an old town, with a municipal charter dating back to 1409 and a long-time trading and shipping centre surrounded by large farms, we are proud

to say that today Nysted is also a modern town with an active and vibrant business community as well as associations and enthusiasts working to promote the area and manage the many activities around. Particularly worthy of mention are Nysted Enterprise and Tourism Association (commonly known as NET; see www. visitnysted.dk) and Nysted and Surrounding Area Joint Council (commonly known as NOF; see www.nysted.dk). Shopping: The old market town has grocery shops, florists, cycle and moped dealers, petrol stations, antique and second-hand shops, a vet, hairdresser, chemist, library, estate agent and hunting & fishing shop, as well as a baker’s, butcher’s and smokehouse. service combined with great food, the shop is definitely worth a visit. At Nysted Butcher’s, you will find well-hung, hookmatured meat for the barbecue and sausages and salt-cured ham from our own sausage-maker. History and culture Nysted is a shining example of a town: Denmark’s southernmost and smallest market town with an exciting, beautiful and well-preserved urban environment that reflects centuries of history and activities. Nysted is known for two unique events: The Hajkutter Festival & Regatta, featuring beautiful old wooden sailing ships, and the internationally acclaimed Nysted Medieval Festival, which has a fantastic atmosphere and offers jousting, theatre and lots of other entertainment. Both events take place in early August.
A relatively new activity is the Nysted Seal Safari, which offers daily boat trips on DROST in July and August as well as the small Seal Museum, which is located close to the pier in the former tool and smoke house, the place of the work of the Landt seal-catcher brothers up to the end of the 20th century. Food & drink/accommodation: The quaint harbour area’s excellent restaurants are ready to offer visitors a warm welcome, as are the town’s other eating establishments, covering everything from hot-dog stands, kiosks and pizzerias to gourmet restaurants. As well as the town’s central Hotel Nysted Harbour, there is The Cottage, a halftimbered idyllic restaurant and hotel on the outskirts of Nysted, beside Nysted Beach Camping. The Cottage is great for families and couples. The beautiful garden provides
plenty of space and playing opportunities for children, while adults can enjoy their holiday from the terrace. Furthermore, just a 5-minute drive from Nysted, close to the wood and beach in the small fishing village of Stubberup, Den Gamle Gaard Holiday Centre offers 55 holiday apartments as well as function and conference facilities. From Nysted Harbour, a cycle path runs past the old medieval castle of Aalholm, through woods and fields directly to Stubberup. CROCODILE SAFARI IN FALSTER Experience Europe’s only collection of all living crocodile species. Meet crocodiles of all sizes, see the rare clouded leopards and say hello to the snakes, monkeys and giant tortoises at Europe’s largest Crocodile Zoo. It’s a very special experience to stare into the jaws of a large crocodile, with its long rows of sharp teeth, and at Crocodile Zoo you can get up close to the cold-blooded animals – if you dare. An adventure with a bite When Sobek – Europe’s largest crocodile, at 5 metres in length – eats, he doesn’t do it quietly. At Crocodile Zoo, the zookeepers take you right into the world of the animals, and there are feedings and up-close encounters with the animals every day between 11 am and 2:30 pm during holiday periods. Crocodile Zoo has also been expanded with an outdoor alligator enclosure and an alligator lake, where you can learn about
crocodiles’ unique structures and survival methods. The brand-new puma enclosure is the only place in Denmark where you can see the beautiful pumas and clouded leopards. NightZoo – for the brave The darkness lies heavy over the palms and water enclosures at Crocodile Zoo. The gentle rippling of running water and the short cries of birds fill the silence. There is a slight movement in the undergrowth, then suddenly a pair of red eyes gleam, stirred by the light of a torch. Sobek has woken – and he’s hungry... North Falster is a lovely green area, and there are many ways to enjoy it. Stubbekøbing is surrounded by lovely countryside, with green landscapes on one side and Grønsund and a view to Bogø on the other. It is fittingly called Denmark’s green corner. Falster’s second largest town, the railway town of Nørre Alslev, is also located among green fields and lovely woods. The area is ideal for anglers who can take their fishing rods out on either side, to Guldborgsund or Grønsund and the east coast, or simply find one of the many put & take lakes. Wander round the local food stores and visit the markets in town or the numerous farm shops, all selling top quality food products. To add to the excitement, visit the Crocodile Zoo, which has Europe’s largest collection of crocodiles and alligators. You will feel the presence of history at the Danish Tractor Museum or the Danish Motorcycle Museum, or sailing on IDA, one of the last wooden ferries in Denmark, on the route between Bogø and Stubbekøbing in the summer.
STUBBEKØBING HARBOUR The town is worth a walk around. Stubbekøbing dates back to 1354 and is one of Denmark’s oldest market towns with a commercial harbour and marina. Visiting Lolland-Falster’s farm shops, which are full of delicious local specialities, is an experience for the whole family. Quality is the focus for producers on Lolland-Falster, and we have proof. In 2018, Frederiksdal Winery’s awards included gold and silver medals for its Sur Lie and new Sparkling Red, while Krenkerup Brewery’s Stout was voted Best European Stout by the judges at European Beer Star 2018. Every day, our producers work to optimise their products to give you an exquisite taste experience.
You can easily make a great excursion out of visiting the area’s farm shops. Take the family to the countryside and visit one of the local farms, where you can see how the animals live and the grain is grown. Here you can pet rabbits, say hello to cows and watch happy pigs rooting around in the ground. You can shop for delicious ingredients in the farm shops: meat from animals that have had a good life on the farm, and vegetables that come straight from the ground outside. Fresh fruit that has ripened in the sun, and delicious processed products such as wine, beer, jam and much more. In short: everything your heart could desire.

CLOSE BY
DID YOU KNOW THAT: • The company Shorthand ECM and sailing enthusiast Morten Brandt Rasmussen are behind Vegvisir Race. • The sailing event is staged in close collaboration with the Municipality of Guldborgsund and is largely run by enthusiastic volunteers from five local sailing clubs: Viking Sailing Association, Guldborgsund Motorboat Club, Nysted Sailing Club, Guldborgland Boat Association and Grønsund Sailing and Motorboat Club. • Vegvisir Race is part of a tourism case study in the Benefit4Regions project. Here, the focus is on Danish-German cooperation in tourism development across municipal and national borders. • Vegvisir Race 2019 will next be held from 15–17 August 2019.

VEGVISIR RACE – FIND YOUR OWN WAY Lolland-Falster is home to beautiful coastlines, islands and waters that call for active experiences and water sports. Here, the new Vegvisir Race is leading the way – with beautiful sailing boats starting in Nykøbing Falster and heading north past the Guldborg Bridge and out into the Småland Sea. An event that can be enjoyed up-close at two marinas and at scenic viewpoints along the Guldborg Sound. From 14 to 114 sailing boats in a year Vegvisir Race is a new type of single-handed (one sailor) or double-handed (two sailors) distance sailboat racing. The regatta combines demanding tactical inshore navigation with strategic offshore sailing in the Baltic Sea. From 2017 to 2018, the number of sailing boats entered in the race increased from 14 to 114. In 2019, even more sailors are expected to participate, and the audience on land can enjoy lots of associated activities in the harbours in Nykøbing Falster and Guldborg. EU project creates value across the Baltic Sea Vegvisir Race has become particularly popular with Danish and German sailors, who appreciate the local commitment and sailing conditions in the area. Guldborgsund
Benefit4Regions (B4R) aims to support rural development in Denmark and Germany. In B4R, Danish and German project partners are working on various case studies – including of tourism, local foods and recruitment of labour in rural areas.
Municipality and five local sailing clubs are working to develop the sailing event across the Baltic Sea through the Interreg project Benefit4Regions (B4R). In 2018, this led to the launch of a new Danish-German junior sailing race, which will be held again this year as part of Vegvisir Race. In 2019, the long course (225 nautical miles) for those doublehanded racing will lead the sailors under the Fehmarn Sound Bridge in Germany. Vegvisir offers guidance A vegvisir is a magical Icelandic symbol that, according to myth, helps people find the right way at sea and the right way in life. In other words, the vegvisir is the perfect icon and symbol for an event where the requirements for the sailors’ navigational skills are very high.

HINTS AND TIPS
FOR SAILORS The waters around Lolland-Falster are mostly uncomplicated – suitable for both experienced and less experienced sailors. Extra caution is rarely needed. If you’re ready for it, there is every reason to explore the following areas. Sailing in Guldborgsund
The water level south of Nykøbing is at least 1.80 metres at mean sea level, as long as you stay within the channel and otherwise operate in accordance with good seamanship. North of Nykøbing F. the channel is deeper.
Bridge of King Frederik IX
Note the water level on the water level board. If necessary, call the on-duty officer for aid or make a personal assessment of whether it is low tide – possibly using the Gedsergård Bridge as a reference. Pay attention to the wind and current. Do not go up against the markings, hold up to the windward to be sure that you are in the middle of the channel. Passage height is 4 m below the leaf at mean sea level, when the bridge is in the closed position. 3.6 m below the fixed bridge span. Sail-through width is 20 m. For more information tel. +45 54 82 31 70.
Guldborgbroen bridge
At mean sea level, navigational clearance is 4 m below the bridge leaves, and 2.5 m under the fixed bridge. Sail-through width is 30 m.
The difference between high and low tide is about 0.6 m. Only one ship may pass below the bridge at a time. For more information tel. +45 54 77 00 17.
By day or night, a loud audible signal indicates that the bridge ,despite the emitted signal for passage, can not be opened; if conditions permit, the signal for passage will be turned off.
Signalling at the bridges
Ships and vessels can acquire passage free of charge by signalling at least half a mile from the bridge, by:
BRIDGE OPENING HOURS
In the daytime: Hoisting the international signal flag N (or, if this is not available, the national flag) to half mast as well as sounding a long and a short blast with a whistle or a foghorn. At night: Shining a white light at the bow and sounding a long and a short blast with a whistle or a foghorn. Possible response signals from the bridge by means of the bridge lantern: • A: 1 red steady light means that passage is prohibited. • B: 2 red flashing lights mean that the bridge will be opened for a ship coming from N • C: 2 red fixed light means that a ship coming from N may pass • D: 3 red flashing light means that the bridge will be opened for a ship coming from S • E: 3 red fixed light means that a ship coming from S may pass

EXPERIENCE
LOLLAND-FALSTER FROM THE WATER Imagine gliding quietly through the water in a sailboat on a sunny day, simply enjoying the beautiful scenery around you. Or watching the landscape go by from the deck of a boat with a light breeze in your hair. Lolland-Falster’s beautiful coasts are unique and offer a wealth of beautiful, natural scenery. High-lying forests at Hesnæs If you sail east of Falster, a real natural gem awaits by Hesnæs. Here, the high-lying forests tower majestically on the steep cliffs sloping towards the Baltic Sea. It is said that Adam Oehlenschläger had Hesnæs in mind when he wrote the words to the Danish national anthem “there is a lovely country” (Der er et yndigt land), and it really is hard not to be enthralled by the beautiful landscape, which looks particularly breathtaking from the water. Dodekalitten: Legend of the Lolers In a Lolland field next to the Småland waters, twelve singing menhirs stand as a symbol of the legendary people, the Lolers, who gave Lolland its name when they arrived here thousands of years ago. The Dodekalitten monument is surrounded by four mounds, one of which is a Stone Age passage grave. Sail with the seals The area around Rødsand, south of Lolland, is the most important habitat and breeding area for harbour seals in the entire Baltic Sea. Here,
you can see the seals frolicking in the water or basking on land. The seals occupy the seal reservation all year round, but they can be found in abundance during the breeding season in June/July. Offshore wind turbine safari South of the Lolland coast at Rødsand and Nysted, you can get close to one of the world’s largest wind farms. The immense blades reach a height of 110 metres, and are a fascinating sight. Nysted wind farm and its Rødsand II expansion are popular destinations, and can easily be combined with a seal safari. Denmark’s southernmost point As Scandinavia’s southernmost point, Gedser Odde on South Falster is definitely worth a visit. The landscape here is testimony to the violent forces of nature. There can be absolute calm at one end, while the storm whips and eats away at the clay cliffs around the corner. The rugged southern tip at Gedser Odde is a stark contrast to the inviting, broad sandy beaches just a few hundred metres to the north.

FLEX HOUSING – YOUR SECOND HOME USE AN ALL-YEAR HOUSE AS A HOLIDAY HOME A flex property is a great alternative to a holiday home. You can use a flex property all year round. It can be a little town house, where you become a part of local life, or a big farm in the country, where you live in natural beauty with no close neighbours. All you need is permission from your municipality. In Vordingborg, Guldborgsund and Lolland Municipality we approve the vast majority of houses as flex housing. Ask your local estate agent about flex housing or read more on www.flexbolig.nu

HOTEL SKOVRIDERGAARDEN
DELICIOUS FOOD IN BEAUTIFUL SURROUNDINGS Hotel Skovridergaarden lies in a green oasis surrounded by forest yet it is close to the centre of Nakskov. Book a weekend stay at Skovridergaarden and enjoy life in the green surroundings. In summer, you can enjoy the sun on the large terrace overlooking the forest and in the winter you can warm yourself in front of the open fire. The hotel is also ideal for a golfing break as it is close to Halsted Kloster Golfclub, where you can play in historic surroundings. The restaurant serves classic cuisine with a focus on high-quality seasonal ingredients. The à la carte menu, available every evening except on Sundays, is exciting and varied. If you visit Skovridergaarden in the summer, the Friday barbecue is a highlight. From 1st May to 1st September the restaurant also serves lunch. At Skovridergaarden you will be made to feel instantly welcome. Among others, you will meet Alex, Jonas and Michael, who make it a point of honour to greet and welcome guests the moment they walk through the door. Skovridergaarden dates back to 1836, so make sure you take a look at the original half-timbered house that is still part of the hotel. Even then, just like today, Skovridergaarden was one of the region’s most beautifully situated restaurants.

MERTZ
HUNTING & LEISURE Mertz Hunting & Leisure is the local specialist for hunters, anglers and generally outdoorsy people. Drop by one of the two large shops in Nykøbing and Nakskov and step into a world where being a little overwhelmed by the large selection is unavoidable. Fishing tackle and equipment Mertz Hunting & Leisure has the largest selection of fishing tackle and equipment in the region. Here you will find tackle for virtually all types of fishing, whether inshore fishing for sea trout, offshore fishing for flatfish and cod or something else entirely. The two shops also sell live bait and fishing licences, and are a great place to prepare for your fishing trip. Lolland and Falster have some of the country’s best conditions for inshore fishing. Co-owner Jens Agner says: ”We’re happy to help advise on good fishing spots and offer a few tips on the gear you’ll need.” Hunting Since the beginning of this millennium, interest in hunting has been on the rise. Lifestyle researchers believe this growing interest in hunting is deeply rooted in modern men as an alternative to an increasingly sedentary
office life. Anyone interested in hunting will really enjoy looking round one of the shops, which have everything in the way of clothing and equipment for hunting in Denmark and abroad, stocking all the famous Danish brands. Both novice and experienced hunters can get expert help at Mertz Hunting & Leisure. Outdoors Whether you walk the dog, go on regular rambles or maybe even do trekking, you will find a wide selection of outdoor clothing, leisurewear and footwear for both men and women. Such as wellington boots, walking boots, rainwear and leisurewear of the highest quality. ”We’ve got the right clothing whatever the season,” says Jens Agner. ”But you’re also welcome to just come in, have a browse and be inspired.”

FAMILY HOLIDAY
CLOSE TO NATURE
A GOOD TIP
ENJOY THE SUN LOLLAND AND FALSTER ARE CALLED THE DANISH SOUTH SEA ISLANDS FOR A REASON. HERE, YOU CAN ENJOY THE SUN A BIT MORE THAN ELSEWHERE IN THE COUNTRY. ACCORDING TO THE DANISH METEOROLOGICAL INSTITUTE, GULDBORGSUND MUNICIPALITY HAS 100+ HOURS MORE SUNSHINE THAN THE NATIONAL AVERAGE EVERY YEAR, WHILE LOLLAND MUNICIPALITY HAS 70 HOURS MORE THAN THE NATIONAL AVERAGE EVERY YEAR.

VisitLolland-Falster.com
Long summer evenings, happy kids and barbeques. There is something special about summer when you spend it on one of Lolland-Falster’s many campsites. It’s no lie when we say that the sun shines a little more on Lolland-Falster. The South Sea Islands really get about 50 hours more sun than the national average, so why not spend the sunshine hours with the family on a wonderful camping holiday? Enjoy a summer evening on the site with laughter and long conversations over the
camping table, the sound of children playing in the background and views of the sea. The setting is top notch: The beach, lake and woods are never far away and there are good facilities and plenty of activities for children and adults. Hire a bike and take the family on an adventure through the flat landscape with its fields, meadows, woods, romantic village churches, impressive ancient mounds and much more. You will always find a good adventure within cycling distance on Lolland-Falster!

THE FEHMARNBELT LINK
We are building the longest immersed tunnel • The Fehmarnbelt tunnel will be 18 kilometers long and comprises a four lane motorway and two electrified rail tracks. • The tunnel will consist of 79 individual elements, each 217 metres long, and 10 special elements with a lower floor for the use of the tunnel operation and maintenance equipment. • A tunnel element weighs 73,000 tonnes. This corresponds to 14,000 elephants. • The amount of steel used in the tunnel is equivalent to about 50 Eiffel Towers. • Up to 3,000 people will be directly employed in building the Fehmarnbelt tunnel. • It will take ten minutes to travel from Denmark to Germany by car and seven minutes by train.

GeoCentre Møns Klint invites you on a fantastic journey through time to the days when almost all life on earth died out due to meteor impacts and super volcanoes, and the days when giant glaciers shaped the landscape. Solve the mystery of the extinct dinosaurs A few years ago, GeoCentre Møns Klint went on an expedition to Greenland and made a fantastic find! THE EARTH’S BEST FOODS FROM THE SOUTH SEA ISLANDS If there is one thing we are proud of on Lolland-Falster, it is our food. Take, for example, our Fejø apples or fine cherry wine. But what’s the secret behind the fabulous taste, no matter where you encounter it on Lolland-Falster? It’s our favourable climate and, most notably, our soil. The truth is that you will have to look hard to find better soil than that which we have here on the South Sea Islands. And you can taste it. That’s why we talk proudly about the earth’s best food from LollandFalster. We can say that without any fear of exaggeration.
