It was a really enjoyable family holiday with a couple of familiar outings like the one to Knuthenborg – which has expanded noticeably in the ten years since I last visited it. It was our first visit to the Crocodile Zoo on Falster – and quite an aha! moment to find it teeming with crocodiles – in a village on Falster. Then there was the Medieval Centre near Nykøbing Falster. We ended up spending most of a day there. The combination of “old” houses, people in costumes from the Middle Ages, stone-casting war engines and a solid lunch of medieval food served at Den Gyldne Svane proved highly successful with young and old. That kind of time travel back to the 15th century is a neat example of how history can be brought to life so that everyone is caught up in it. The museum railway from Maribo to Bandholm is another of my favourites on Lolland-Falster. So is the art museum at Fuglsang, which I visited for the first time earlier in the summer..

In July 2014 I took my three children to Lolland-Falster. Several of my friends and relations thought this was an ‘alternative’ choice, but that was just what we wanted. We made our base in a cabin on a camping site in Maribo, and went out sightseeing in the attractions Lolland-Falster could offer – carefully chosen to suit the ages of the children at 4, 9 and 13.

If you think what I have written here sounds like an advert for Lolland-Falster, that is just what it is. As a travel journalist I am very keen to advertise good places to visit, where I meet challenges for mind and body, and where I learn new things and gain insights – no matter whether I am in California, on Manhattan or Lolland-Falster – or anywhere else.

It’s an ill wind that blows no one any good

natural disaster In 1872 Lolland-Falster was struck by the greatest natural disaster in recent times. On the night of November 13 a raging storm blew in from the east, pressing huge masses of water in from the Gulf of Bothnia into the Baltic, which washed in with disastrous force over the flat coasts of Lolland-Falster. The low dikes could not withstand the waves, and people had to seek safety in attics and on rooftops. From there they could see their livestock and their entire livelihood washed away in the flood. That night, 24 lives were lost, and even more people lost everything they owned. When the floods drew back, many of the farms were left in ruins, and the once fertile farmland was transformed, covered in a thick layer of white sand. In one night the area changed from an active farming community to a cluster of deserted ghost villages. However, the farmland was not the only asset in Marielyst. While most of the population was struggling for survival day by day, the upper middle classes were beginning to spend time, especially in the summer, outside the large towns. The long, wide sandy beaches of Marielyst were perfect for the latest trend – holidays by the sea. An enterprising attorney at law, Frederik Graae, saw that “there was gold in the sand of Bøtø.” He set up a company and bought the farm at Marielyst at a forced sale. It was opened on 28 July 1906 as the seaside hotel Marielyst Østersøbad (Marielyst Baltic Bathing).

from a holiday resort for the wealthy to a popular seaside town Handlebar moustaches and striped bathing suits In spite of his far-sighted plans, Frederik Graae probably had no idea of what he had started. Marielyst was only about 100 kilometres from Copenhagen, and guests came flocking to the hotel. It received enormous publicity in Danish, German and British newspapers, and the middle classes streamed in. Often wives and children spent the whole summer at the seaside hotel, while the hard-working breadwinners worked in the city, so their handlebar moustaches and striped bathing suits were only seen at weekends. The seaside hotel closed in 1968, and since 1971 has housed the Marielyst Folk High School. Much earlier, others had seen the opportunities offered by the holidaymakers too. In 1908-1909 three summer residences, Tannhaüser, Kitzwalde and Troldtøj were built just behind the dike. The houses were named after novels by Holger Drachmann, who was a close friend of Frederik Graae. Inside Tannhaüser and Kitzwalde the beams were even decorated with quotations from the novels. Like Skagen in the south When Frederik Graae set up his seaside hotel, it was modelled on Skagen, and he frequently used well-known names to promote Marielyst. His dream was to create a colony of artists who painted there, and one or two painters like Olaf Rude and Carl Holm were drawn to the place. The seaside resort did in fact become popular among actors. In 1939 the Danish Actors’ Association opened a con-

valescent home with five summer cottages and shared facilites in Pejsestuen. Four of the cottages and Pejsestuen are still rented out to members of the Association. The Dutch houses (Hollændernes Huse) Inspired by Frederik Graae’s success, other enterprising people began to buy up farms in the area. Among these entrepreneurs was Thora Riisgaard, who bought a large farm called Nørrevang in 1934. She opened the first baker’s shop in Marielyst, selling bread and cream cakes while she converted the farm into a summer guest house. At that time everyone was enthusiastic about fresh air and exercise, and Thora Riisgaard engaged the energetic fitness instructor, Captain Jespersen, to lead courses in stretching arms and touching toes. In the evenings there was entertainment at Nørrevang, and the farm was a flourishing guest house until Thora Riisgaard had to leave in 1953. Since then, a series of different owners have run Nørrevang as a hotel and conference centre. Marielyst for the People When the Holidays with Pay Act was passed in 1938, Marielyst developed in a new direction. All employees were now entitled to two weeks’ paid holiday, and it was suddenly possible for large groups of the population to go away for holidays. The working class did not miss out on sea bathing and fresh air. As soon as the Holiday Act was a reality, the Labour Movement set up the Workers’ Travel Association to provide cheap holidays for those on low pay. These holidays were

enormously popular, and in 1942 Marielyst Feriecenter (Marielyst Holiday Centre) opened with 56 bungalows. The houses still exist, but have been sold off. However, there were many who could not afford even the cheap Workers’ Travel Association houses. In a small area they were allowed to camp in tents instead, where the Digeparken summer cottages stand today. An overnight stay cost a few kroner, and many local working families spent weekends under white canvas, with straw from nearby farms on the ground. Meanwhile, the first summer cottages were built or constructed and brought to the area. These were often small, inexpensive affairs, built by the owners themselves. The parts of the house called “Funki” were transported from Nykøbing Falster to Digeparken on a motorcycle with a sidecar. It consisted of a single room and was built of old packing cases. More houses appeared, and over the years a society grew up that was inaugurated in 1950 as I/S Digeparken. Cars and big beat During the 1950s the economy improved at all levels of society, and Danish families became mobile. Motoring holidays were popular, and steadily increasing numbers of holidaymakers came to Marielyst. At that time there were between 500–600 summer cottages in the area, and a church was built for the summer guests and the many permanent residents who had also settled there. The church was a place to spend a few quiet moments between dips in the sea, walks along the 17½ kilometres of dikes, and of course the lively night-time parties that were a major element of the 1960s’ summer culture. As the number of guest-houses grew, so did the number of music clubs and discos. Marielyst today is one of the most extensive holiday centres in Denmark, with an abundance of activities for all ages. Should anyone have a couple of minutes to spare between beach activities and soft-ice, they can go past the flood monument and the 24 memorial stones that tell the story of the great flood that was really the start of it all.

On the blue sea

600 km of coast YACHTING With 600 km of coast surrounding an area of 1,797 km², you are never more than about 15 minutes’ drive from the sea. In many places the water around Lolland-Falster is not very deep, so there is no excuse for not joining in water activities. Besides the sea around the islands, you can have lots of fun on the Maribo lakes, for instance. Why not take a boat trip in Anemonen? One of Denmark’s most successful rowing clubs also trains in the waters of the lake, and both present and former stars on the kayak scene ply their paddles here.

Surrounded by a whole ring of harbours, Lolland-Falster is an ideal area to bring your boat. From the cosy little harbours it is never far from exciting things to do on land. They are not far apart, so depending on the wind, you can find where it is most sheltered, where the water is best for swimming, or whatever you prefer. In the harbour guide you can find out more about the different harbours and what they have to offer.

CANOEING/KAYAKING

FISHING

The lakes and shallow water in the inlets and fjords on Lolland-Falster’s coasts are ideal for rowing and sailing. There is a new guide to Canoeing and Kayaking round LollandFalster, with plenty of inspiration and help to plan long or short trips, for beginners or experienced oarsmen. The guide also includes safety advice and water depths as well as lots of practical details. There are several good tours along Guldborgsund between Lolland og Falster. The guide is available from tourist information bureaus and places to stay near the coast.

Life is good for anglers on LollandFalster. There are many different places where the fishing is fine, for serious anglers with the best equipment or where everyone can join in, including families who just want to enjoy a day together outdoors. You can go out to sea or fish from the coast and jetties, or go for freshwater fish and Put and Take. An Angler’s Guide is available from tourist offices, which will help you decide what kinds of places are best for you to go fishing. You can learn what to fish for, when and how.

If you are not a keen angler yourself, you can buy fresh fish at the harbours in Langø on west Lolland and Sortsø on Falster.

SURFING On Lolland-Falster you are never far from the water. There are good, safe conditions for surfing, for beginners as well as more experienced surfers, and when distances are so short you can always find a stretch of coast with the wind in the right direction for windsurfing or kite surfing. At Falster Surf Center at Marielyst you can also learn wind-surfing and kite-surfing.

GO REALLY CLOSE TO THE ANIMALS AT GULDBORGSUND ZOO If you ask zoo-keeper Lotte Larsen what is the best thing about Guldborgsund Zoo and Botanical Garden, she is quite certain: “At Guldborgsund Zoo and Botanical Garden you can go right up to all the animals. From goats that love being patted to cheeky otters. And we are always ready to tell a good story,” she adds. She especially likes the otters’ new enclosure, where they inquisitively play about and explore. “Last week the ’head otter’, Sebastian, stole our water hose and tried to hide it in the otters’ sleeping quarters. He gave us a good shower before we got it back. The otters are smart – they know that the keepers always wear black, so when they see a visitor in black they scream for food,” says Lotte Larsen. “In fact you would think they had not been fed for a week! But it all adds to the cheerful atmosphere.” A new feature at Guldborgsund ZOO & Botanical Garden is the ZOO-School, where you can have fun learning facts about animals, and you can get right close to the clever rats, or snakes, king python, tortoises, bearded dragons and monitor lizards. Or go exploring in the gardens and have a go at some of the giant games like the flowers-in-a-row game or a treasure hunt. CROCODILE ZOO

Caught up with crocodiles

Three things you certainly did not know about crocodiles: - Crocodiles have lived on the earth for more than 200 million years. That makes them the animals that have survived longest on earth, on land and in water. - The gharial is the species with most teeth. It has 104 altogether.

One of the world’s internationally recognised crocodile zoos is on Falster. Behind its success is a passionate crocodile enthusiast who was given a tortoise as a boy. It all began with a tortoise. It was not a turtle; it was a land-tortoise, René Hedegaard emphasises. Then he can give a lengthy explanation of the difference between land-living tortoises and aquatic turtles, one of which is that turtles are carnivorous. We are at the crocodile zoo at the north of Falster. It is a highly acclaimed zoo, and one of the only places in the world, for instance, that has succeeded in persuading the black caiman to breed in captivity. The zoo’s success is not entirely due to luck. René Hedegaard is considered one of the leading experts on crocodiles. He is a member of the international association known as the Crocodile Specialist Group, and his work takes him on travels all over the world to save rare and threatened species of crocodilians.

As mentioned earlier, it began with a tortoise. Then there was a snake. At the age of 12 he had a diced water snake. “And then I have had crocodiles since I moved away from home at the age of 18,” he says. That was over the limit for his parents, who had witnessed their son’s growing interest in reptiles throughout his childhood. This interest really took shape when he found the farm on Falster. “I actually managed to train as an electrician. But only a few years after I left home, in 1990, I bought this place so I could start a crocodile zoo,” says René Hedegaard. Still keeping his job, he then started building up his life’s dream from scratch. In 2000 the Crocodile Zoo opened with a few terrariums

and pools. Since then it has branched out in all directions. It now includes a series of exciting habitats, and today houses more than 20 different crocodilian species – which means all the known species in the world. There are also snakes, turtles and lizards, and the stock of animals is enlarged year by year. The zoo on Falster is growing steadily, and there are always plans to extend it further. René Hedegaard is completely carried away by crocodiles. But he says he is never seriously out of his depth.

Award-winning cheeses and organic capers Guests can expect an exuberant welcome when they are invited to the organic farm at Knuthenlund. Almost 500 sheep and the goats and spotted pigs ensure there will always be fun and games. The sheep also produce the milk that is made into Knuthenlund’s international award-winning cheeses and dairy products. A special blend of different grasses and herbs grow in the large sheepfolds on the estate, helping to keep the animals in top form and giving a distinctive flavour to the products from the dairy. The day normally begins at 4 am in the large yards where the animals can wander about freely. They are milked twice a day, and a good sheep gives 300 litres of milk a year. The animals are milked indoors, and all the milk is used in Knuthenlund’s own dairy, where it is made into sheep’s milk yoghurt, brie and semi-solid cheese. The sheep like to stay outdoors most of the year, and are peaceful, gregarious animals that welcome visitors. The oldest sheep at Knuthenlund have been there since the first animals arrived in 2007, and they go quietly in and out at milking time. The lambs can be mischievous, and sometimes some neighbours to the estate help with their Border Collies when the lambs have to be herded together. Contented free-range pigs Knuthenlund can also boast of the largest herd in the country of the old Black-spotted Danish Landrace breed, and the 71 sows farrow all year round. These charming pigs are now rarely seen in Denmark, and at present there are less than

200 adult animals left. But at Knuthenlund they enjoy a glorious free life, and remain outdoors all year. Although they barely have fur, they thrive through the winter, and if the cold is too much for them they can snuggle in the straw in one of the many sties in the fields. Their free existence includes a real gourmet diet. The pigs forage for most of their food themselves in fields and find a mixture of grass and alfalfa. Their diet also includes whey from the Knuthenlund dairy, and it is much appreciated. The piglets suckle their mothers for at least 50 days. In comparison a conventional piglet is weaned after about 30 days. And when, inevitably, the pigs have to be slaughtered, it happens at a local abattoir only a few kilometres away. The result of this treatment is truly delicious roast pork!

and the first sheep were soon introduced. Since then the animal stocks have been extended to include pigs and some goats, and now the estate has its own dairy and shop. The family tradition revived as organic farming The Knuthenlund estate was established in 1729 as part of the larger Knuthenborg estate. It acquired independent status in 1913, when it was bought by the dairyman J.P.H. Hansen, who was especially successful with cheese production. The present owner, Susanne Groth Hovmand-Simonsen, took over the running of Knuthenlund as the fourth generation in 2006. She decided to re-think the classic farm and go back to the original dairying. The master plan was built over organics, sustainability, animal welfare and good raw ingredients. Welcoming surroundings

Local ingredients In an area with fertile agricultural land, the focus is naturally on local ingredients. If you eat at the Brasserie and Café Hvid on the Slotsbryggen in Nykøbing, you will often find seasonal vegetables and products on the menu. Just ask Ole Hvid, the owner, who is always about in the restaurant. At Hotel Saxkjøbing in – where else – Sakskøbing, local ingredients are in focus too. One of the owners is chef and author Claus Meyer, who also grows his own fruit in the area. You can choose the five-course Flavours of Lolland-Falster menu, which lets you taste a range of the superb regional products for less than DKK 500. At Den Fuldkomne Fisker (Complete Angler) in Onsevig many of the vegetables are grown just outside the door. Hanne conjures up fabulous food based on seasonal ingredients. On Vejrø too, the restaurant’s raw ingredients are locally produced on the island.

Guide: Eating well on Lolland-Falster Lolland-Falster is one big food-production area. It is not covered by the Michelin Guide, so that gives no leads to follow. If you go in for cosiness and picturesque views, and perhaps a gentle walk after your meal, The Cottage in Nysted is warmly recommended. The setting of the English Schoolteacher’s timber-framed cottage is as idyllic as it comes. After your meal, a short walk takes you to the Skansen fortifications and along Nysted Bay, with views of the harbour and Ålholm Castle. There is also idyllic timber-framed comfort at Hotel Nørrevang at Marielyst. Formerly a farm, it goes back a long way as a boarding house, hotel and conference centre.

Fine views Food simply tastes better if there is a good view. With 600 km of coast, there are excellent chances of eating with a beautiful view of the sea. At the Fjorden restaurant near Hestehovedet on Nakskov Fjord, you sit with a view over the beach and the bay. Have a good full dinner with dessert and coffee, to spin out the time for as long as possible. You see the loveliest sunsets looking west over the bay. If you eat at Pomlenakke, you sit at the top of the steep slopes of the east coast of Falster. There are glorious woods on both sides, while to the east there is a view over the Baltic. It is hard to imagine anywhere lovelier.

When it comes to free-range poultry, they know all the secrets at Dalbakkegaard near Vester Ulslev. In 2014 Bryan and Dorthe Hansen, who run the farm, were awarded the Family Farmers’ Initiative prize, which is given to a family farm for innovative ideas, and at the same time highlights diversity in farming. Gastronomy and dried porridge

Once Rasmus had no intention of setting up for himself. Today he runs two gourmet restaurants on Lolland-Falster. He wanted to be a chef. There were plenty of good ideas and creative activity, because there are plenty of god raw ingredients in southern Denmark. But 28-year-old Rasmus Elver was not going to be self-employed. All that hassle? – No thanks! Then the ambitious young chef from Præstø met a young woman from Falster. That drew him to Nykøbing and a job at one of the town’s very best restaurants. After a couple of years in the kitchen he sat late one evening after closing time, drinking a glass of wine with the owner. Suddenly he had agreed to take the place over. “And that was the smartest thing I ever did,” says Rasmus Elver. He has just finished the day’s first briefing over breakfast, shared with his employees at Restaurant La Comida in Slotsgade in Nykøbing Falster. It is past midday, and there is constant activity up and down the stairs to the basement as employees dart in and out with the fresh raw ingredients for the day. On the table there is fresh coffee – and dried porridge!

“Yes, they really are oat porridge crisps. We roll it out thin and bake it,” says Mr. Elver. The crisp flakes are accompanied by paper-thin wafers of scallops, puréed and then baked in thin, transparent slivers that almost melt away on your tongue, but you get all the characteristic aroma and salt flavour. This was one of many successful experiments in the youthful kitchen. Creativity and joy of life go hand in hand, and helped Rasmus to win the title of Young Manager of the Year in 2014. “We take time to play every day. And we get inspiration from each other. That is one of the best things about this place. We never know what will be on the menu next month. It all depends on what ingredients there are, and what we decide to do with them,” he explains. Whatever their efforts produce, it must be quality. It must taste good, it must be satisfying, and interesting to look at. La Comida never serves anything that the employees would not want to eat themselves, says Mr Elver. It is a concept that works. In fact it works so well that in spring 2014 Rasmus Elver

decided to expand his business and lease the beautifully situated Oreby Kro by Sakskøbing Fjord. “I got the chance and could see the possibilities. We run it on largely the same principles as here at La Comida, with fresh ingredients. It is just a bit further out in the country. One day my brother brought a bucket of freshly caught fish, for instance. We just put them on the menu,” says Mr Elver. A common feature for the two restaurants is a great deal of attention to guests. The chefs are always there when the food is served, so they can explain about the various dishes and watch the guests’ reaction. And the young restaurant owner sometimes plans even more closeness. “I go and dream of a long table. Where everyone can come and sit down for a chat together. There will be one menu. SUMMER FRUIT DESSERT What tastes more of summer and sunshine than red berries and cream? – Rødgrød med fløde is the Danish national summer dessert, and here is a smooth, velvety version. • • •

1 kg mixed berries: strawberries, redcurrants, raspberries 1 split vanilla pod About 100 – 150g sugar (depending on the sweetness of the fruit and your preference)

Rinse and pick over the fruit. Nip the tops off the strawberries after rinsing them, and drain them. Set a few berries aside to decorate with, and place the rest in a pan. Split the vanilla pod and add it to the fruit.

Boil the fruit for about 10 minutes, until they are tender. Whisk them in the pan with a stick blender and then pour them through a sieve – not too fine-meshed – into another pan. Mash with a kitchen spoon until all the fruit flesh goes through and only the little pips are left in the sieve. Bring the sieved fruit to the boil again over a gentle heat. Add the sugar a little at a time – taste as you go. You can serve this pudding hot or cold with milk or cream, or enjoy it cold with lightly whipped cream topped with fresh berries. If you don’t have a sieve handy, it is still good with the structure of the whole or almost whole berries. You can thicken it if you like a thicker consistency. Recipe and text: Nethe Plenge

The local traders are on their toes, actively contributing to the fun with special offers and extra service. When the fruit

festival comes round, Hotel Saxkjøbing on the market square takes the centre stage. One of its owners, the chef and writer Claus Meyer, is among the driving forces behind the fruit festival. The hotel has comfortable facilities and a delicious and exciting menu, and runs special events all year round as well as good offers for your stay. Sakskøbing is at the end of Sakskøbing Fjord, and the sea has played an important part in the history of the town. Now the harbour forms an attractive break in the street scene, opening out a view of the lovely country around Sakskøbing, which extends up the river that runs through the town into the fjord. Saxemarken is a green belt along the river, which links with Sakskøbing Hallen and a pretty lake in a fine green area. At its centre is the camping site and the local youth hostel.

Following the fjord north towards Oreby you come to Oreby Mill, which once belonged to Oreby Castle. It is hard to imagine anywhere more idyllic than the mill, close to Oreby Inn, another good place to eat near the fjord, where you will be served good food made from local produce. With so much water, Sakskøbing is a fine base for water activities. The yachting harbour is a little way out in the fjord, while the motorboat and sailing club has one very close to the town. Boat owners can enjoy town life or glorious countryside, while Flatearth hires out canoes, kayaks and motor boats and all kinds of equipment for having fun on the water.

Good beer is brewed here too! Do you know the Danish beer brand from Krenkerup? It is named after the estate where it is brewed, just east of Sakskøbing. Patrick, who owns the estate, has developed a passion for brewing beer, and has a wide range with something for everyone. There is also a cosy little restaurant on the estate, where you can sit and savour the beer on tap or from a bottle right next to the brewery, where they will also show you round. There is good accommodation close by, so you need not worry about driving. You can stay at Radstedhus bed & breakfast, not far from Krenkerup, or Postholderens Sted in Guldborg is another good place to spend the night. West of Sakskøbing, in the road to Maribo, you can stay at Otel Våbensted.

Time stands still. TRUE – There is a very special atmosphere on a small island. You are caught up in the peaceful quietness and time stands still – in the best possible way. You can really re-charge your batteries, and will go home with renewed energy.

You can buy a “tourist ticket” for the ferries that sail to Fejø, Femø and Askø. The ticket is valid for a whole week for both cars and cycles.

Fruit is grown everywhere - partly true Author and TV-chef Claus Meyer owns everything, and fruit is grown everywhere. PARTLY TRUE – Claus Meyer owns Lilleø in the Småland Sea next to Askø, but he does not own other islands. On the other hand there is no shortage of fruit. On Lilleø, Askø and Fejø conditions are perfect for fruit growing, and there are scented orchards wherever you go on the islands. You will also find lots of wayside stalls with fresh fruit and locally produced juice.

Only for hippies - false Island holidays are only for hippies going to feminist camps. FALSE – Even though the world’s oldest feminist camp has been held on Femø since 1971, island holidays have much more to offer. The island scenery is in some ways different from Lolland-Falster, and a cycle is perfect for exploring. There is rolling countryside on Femø, sometimes with twisty roads and pretty views of fields and the sea, dotted with small, friendly villages. The yachting harbour is fun too, especially with Femø Jazz in summer, when the whole island is bustling and busy. Fejø has kept its romantic village atmosphere, and it is like stepping back into a vanished age. The pretty old houses are well kept, breathing charm between the hollyhocks. The old mill is now the tourist information centre, and there are several different places to eat on the island.

simple holiday - False A small island can only provide simple holidays! FALSE – the many small islands round Lolland Falster offer many different types of holiday. On Femø, for instance, there is a comfortable inn, and on Fejø you can choose between a holiday centre with small apartments, a camping site or private accommodation. You can visit Kernegaarden’s bed & breakfast, which offers plenty of great activities, and you can get really close to the animals on the farm. On Vejrø the style is definitely relaxed luxury, and you can be sure absolutely nothing is missing.

Albuen

Nakskov Fjord Medieval herring markets were held at Albuen. For several centuries huge shoals of Baltic herring were exchanged for hard cash on the west coast of Lolland.

Over time the area has been used for fishing, as a pilot station, as a base for a lighthouse and for rescue operations. For several centuries in the Middle Ages, activity on Albuen reached its height when travellers came from near and far to the great herring markets. A series of archaeological excavations at the end of the 1940s revealed the bases of small, regular structures which are believed to have been the sites of market stalls. Among other things, iron nails, shards of pottery and flint arrowheads have been found in the area. Crowded traces of postholes

around the buildings suggested to archaeologists that the stalls consisted of primitive wooden frames that only stood there in the fishing season. Fishing at that time appears to have been highly profitable. Saxo, the chronicler, describes how there were such great shoals of herring in the Baltic that fishers could catch them with their bare hands! A German chronicler from the early 13th century wrote that the Danes earned fortunes in gold and silver by selling herring in Scania in Sweden.

FACTS OM

Albuen West of Nakskov, Albuen is a spit of land that curves around Nakskov Fjord and protects it from the fierce waves of the Baltic. It is 7.5 km long, and today is primarily a harshly bare nature reserve. There are a few houses, built on artificially raised ground because of the risk of flooding.

Coins found in the excavations on Albuen confirm the activities around 1146 (King Valdemar II) until about 1400. It is known, however, that salt was being extracted as early as the 10th century in Luneburg near Hamburg. It was used to salt herrings to preserve them. Herrings were an important supplement in the diet of the Danish population and at the same time an essential commercial product. In the Middle Ages, Denmark was the greatest fishing nation in Europe.

with passengers to and from Maribo, and they could be rowed to the island in boats from Revshale. The main attraction at the restaurant was a dance hall, but schoolchildren on outings could buy soft drinks and the adults were served too. Interest in the island had declined by 1966, and the boats were stopped. The restaurant fell into disrepair and finally the dance hall collapsed. Since 1993 it has again been possible to visit Borgø and the ancient ruins. The island is primarily preserved as natural forest, but it is still possible to go for a walk between the older trees planted about 170 years ago as a park.

The eighth largest lake in the country

Practically nothing remains of Revshaleborg Castle on Borgø except a circular castle ruin surrounded by three steep slopes and the rubble of broken bricks. The castle was built in the 12th century as a defence against Slavic invaders. However, the worst enemy proved to be angry local peasants, who burnt the castle down in a rebellion in 1256 – only about 125 years after it was built. The castle was never rebuilt, but in the middle of the 19th century it attracted the interest of the landowner, the king’s lord in waiting J Wickfeld, who carried out excavations. At the same time he set up a restaurant which became a popular place for outings. A steamer and motor boats sailed

The Maribo lake system consists of Søndersø, Røgbølle Sø, Hejrede Sø and Nørresø. Together they form one of the largest fresh-water systems in Denmark, and Søndersø is the eighth largest lake in the country. There is an unusually large variety of animals and birds. White-tailed eagles breed in the area, and are an impressive sight as they hunt over the water and along the coastline. There is a spectacular view of the lake and the flights of the eagles from the observation points set up around the lake.

On two wheels along Lolland’s country lanes Fantastic views and natural beauty – a little bunch of highly experienced cyclists had to abandon their prejudices about the flat cycling routes on Lolland. Limfjorden and Scania, Slesvig and Holbæk… For more than 20 years, Merete and Jan Holm Møller have cycled from one end of the country to the other with their friends Hanne and Ulrik Lett. They spend each summer exploring new country areas in Denmark especially, but over the years they have seen most regions. Except Lolland… they had still not been there. Until the summer of 2014. “We were a bit prejudiced about it being slightly dull. We thought the places to see were too far apart,” explained Jan Holm Møller. He and his wife Merete have cycled since

one summer 23 years ago, when there was not enough to do in their summer cottage. Their friends Hanne and Ulrik joined them on a successful cycling tour, so they decided to do it again. It has become a tradition to go cycling every year, and the two couples take turns to find new places to visit. The old summer cottage cycles were replaced years ago by top-tuned touring bikes, and they have covered many, many miles. They had still not been to Lolland, but by then it was one of the few parts of the country they had not criss-crossed on their bikes. The four were not too keen as they loaded their bikes onto the southbound train, but admit at once that their prejudices were put to shame. “We planned one day’s stretch along the Lolland dykes, and it was just incredible.

Then coming out to Nakskov Fjord with completely different natural scenery was very special too,” says Merete Holm Møller. The four friends were out and about for four days, with daily stages of 30–40 kilometres. That is a suitable distance, and manageable when you don’t train a lot on your bike every day. It also allows time for plenty of other things. “We want to see and explore where we go, and we want to eat and sleep well. So we arrange the trips around good inns and places to eat. And this time we really found some lovely places – Lolland is great for eating out. Lolland is probably the area where we met most cycling tourists in all the years we have cycled, and it builds up a great atmosphere,” says Jan Holm Møller.

Plan before leaving home When the two couples, Merete and Jan Holm Møller and Hanne and Ulrik Lett set off on their bikes, they have already been planning for months. They plan the destinations and each day’s stretch of road during the winter, and book places to stay months in advance. They usually travel to and from the chosen holiday area by train. Here it is a good idea to check the timetables, because bikes are not accepted on all departures. They have breakfast and the evening meal at the place where they stay the night. They take lunch packs or sandwiches for the rest of the day. Daily stretches of 30–40 km are realistic even for people who are relatively unused to cycling. Then there is also time to enjoy the view and visit museums, shops and galleries and so on.

Keep track of your

rainwear Make a list of things to pack and practise packing your cycle bags correctly with the most important things on top. If you pack sensibly, you can easily have clothes for four or five days without having to wash. But pack so that you can easily find a warm sweater or rainwear if the weather is annoying.

Countless track systems, kilometre after kilometre of woodland paths, long sandy beaches or twisty lanes provide all the challenges you need if you want to go for a run. The circular Ringstien near Nakskov goes through town, woods and open country; running on the South Lolland dike or near Marielyst you can really feel the wind in your hair. Every year a number of runs are organised in the area with varying degrees of difficulty, so there is no excuse for not getting your running shoes on during your holiday.

In Bangsebro and Sønder Kohave woods there are permanent posts for orienteering. The posts are red, with a square red and white orienteering mark, and check numbers 1 – 25 on the individual posts. Cycling routes With its highest point about 30 m above sea level, Lolland is almost flat and perfect for cyclists. Falster’s highest point is just under 44 m, so it is equally inviting. The whole area is criss-crossed with cycling routes, and there is something to suit any taste. Long national and regional routes will take you across the area. Plan a cycling holiday along one of the routes, with overnight stays, sightseeing and good food. There are also shorter routes which are fine if you only want to cycle for a day.

Facts

A young girl from Germany played an important part in Danish history and especially in Lolland-Falster. By Slotsbryggen in Nykøbing Falster, as you go down to the harbour, there is an inconspicuous ruin. Only a couple of metres high, and heavily marked by the passing of time, the prison tower called “fars hat” (father’s hat) is all that now remains of Nykøbing Castle. In fact there were two castles, and the earliest was built around the end of the 12th century. A hundred years later, this castle was the home of the widow of King Christoffer I, Margrethe Sambiria. She was remembered as an excellent horsewoman, called Margrethe Sprænghest. The castle was invaded several times by enemies, and Christoffer II had to suffer the indignity of spending his last years imprisoned there. He died in 1332. During the reigns of several kings the castle was a hunting seat and home of dowager queens. Eventually King Frederik II, nearing the age of 40, married Sophie of Mecklenburg, who was 23 years younger. In spite of the age difference, life with the king suited the young woman, and the marriage was said to be happy. The king was so fond of his young wife that he took her out hunting and on his travels round the kingdom. The Royal couple made their permanent home at Kronborg, but as age – and a somewhat dissipated life – made its impression on Frederik II, he made plans to build a suitable place for his young queen to live as a widow. Sophie is said to have found a suitable architect herself, and managed the building of Nykøbing Castle. Together with Fredensborg and Kronborg, it was said to be one of the most magnificent in Denmark. The work on the castle had hardly be-

gun when Frederik II died in 1588. Eight years later the castle was completed. The dowager queen Sophie, who until then had stayed out of politics, began to take a more active part than the governing council, the Rigsråd liked. She was forced to retire to the castle in Nykøbing Falster. Meanwhile the governing council formed a regency government for Christian, Frederik II and Sophie’s oldest son, who at that time was only eleven years old.

Queen Sophie Sophie of Mecklenburg, 4 September 1557 – 4 October 1631, married King Frederik II in 1572, and as his wife was Queen of Denmark and Norway from 1572 – 1588. She gave birth to seven children altogether. The son who later became King Christian IV was the third child. The Lolland-Falster Museum has a permanent exhibition about Queen Sophie and Nykøbing Castle. More information at: www.aabne-samlinger.dk/museumlollandfalster.

Nykøbing castle

Undismayed, Queen Sophie built up her estates on Falster instead. She had extensive kitchen gardens planted and ran several large farms, cultivating the land and breeding cattle. The young widow was enterprising and had financial flair, and at her death in 1631 she was the richest woman in the country. From then on, unfortunately, Nykøbing Castle fell into disrepair. King Christian IV did not have his mother’s financial flair, and Sophie’s fortune was squandered away. In 1766 the castle was sold at auction to a wealthy merchant. In spite of attempts to sell all the estate together, this was not possible, and the new owner decided to demolish the castle and sell it as building materials. Remains of the castle can still be found in buildings around Lolland-Falster.

Two of the local runic stones and a fine collection of crucifixes are shown on the ground floor. Upstairs visitors can follow the exciting archaeological excavations resulting from the Femern connection. Since 1927 visitors have been able to enjoy the third oldest open-air museum in the country in the beautiful Maribo Nature Park. At the Open Air Museum the everyday lives of ordinary people are made easily understandable, illustrated in little scenes that describe and explain country life in the 19th century in original houses from Lolland and Falster. Various arrangements, large and small, are held during the season. Pederstrup The Reventlow Museum is housed in the main building of the Pederstrup manor farm. Walking through the rooms and chambers of the museum, visitors can learn about the social reformer, C.D.F. Reventlow, his family and his period. The Manor & Landscape Lolland project in the former stud stables is an introduction to the highly characteristic landscape on Lolland before continuing around the island’s 45 manor house estates.

The nobleman who liberated the country people FACTS

The count from Lolland, C.D.F. Reventlow, was one of the driving forces behind the agricultural reforms in the 18th century. A law was enacted in 1733 which bound men between the ages of 14 and 36 to live on the estate or manor farm where they were born. The law was passed after a serious agricultural crisis and crop failure. Many farmers gave up and sought work elsewhere. Tying the young men to the land secured their labour for the landowners. There was also a shortage of men for the militia, and it was the landowners’ responsibility to find soldiers, so this adscription was an advantage for them – with manpower bound to the land, they could threaten dissatisfied peasants with military service. Count Christian Ditlev Frederik Reventlow from Lolland did not approve of the legal power of the landowners over the country people. Even as a very young man he questioned the way the nobility exploited the

peasants. After his father’s death in 1775, when he inherited the five estates on Lolland: Christianssæde, Aalstrup, Lungholm, Pederstrup og Skeltofte, he immediately started his own reforms with three focal points: agricultural reforms, improving financial, social and legal conditions for the country people, and improving their education. These were also the bearing elements of his social commitment. He can take much of the credit for the abolition of adscription in 1788 and he influenced many of the major agrarian reforms in the 18th century. It is also important to remember C.D.F. Reventlow’s great efforts to ensure the population’s right to education. His work led to the introduction of compulsory schooling in 1814.

The Reventlow museum at Pederstrup Christian Ditlev Frederik Reventlow (1748-1827). Count, and Minister of State 1797-1813 under Frederik VI. The history of the Pederstrup farm is known back to about 1340. The earliest buildings date back to about the 16th century, when Pederstrup was owned by the king, but was the home of the count in the region. The farm was sold on several occasions, and came into the ownership of the Reventlow family in 1785 as part of the Christianssæde estate. The present main building was built by C.D.F. Reventlow and has housed a museum of his work since 1940.

If it seems a bit much to rent a whole castle, you can get the feeling at Oreby Mill, a manor house hotel which has won the TripAdvisor Traveller’s Choice award two years running.

There is nothing you can do about it. Youngsters love being allowed to stroke the goats, and it is nothing new. It is not likely to change either. Besides all the exotic animals, Knuthenborg Safari Park, part of the Knuthenborg Estate, has ponies and goats to pat and stroke. The park also has a huge nature playground and lots of activities involving water. There is enough for a whole day’s fun. The neighbouring estate, Knuthenlund, is especially famous for its cheese! This is not just ordinary cheese: it wins prizes abroad, and is served at Michelin-starred restaurants in Denmark. Many of the cheeses are made with milk from the estate’s own sheep and goats. The animals wander freely in large stalls or in the fields, and guests are welcome to go and talk to them. In spring lambs and kids skip about everywhere, and you may even be lucky enough to see one being born. There is free admission to the stalls at Knuthenlund.

When hunger sets in after an interesting morning, a good lunch can be a highlight in a perfect day. Knuthenlund’s farm shop sells many of the estate’s own delicious products, and will also serve something good to eat. Alternatively, part of a successful visit to the manor might be to eat a picnic in one of the beautiful parks round the castles, estates and manors on Lolland-Falster. Examples are the Reventlow Park at Pederstrup Estate, the park at Halsted Priory, or the Baroque Garden at Søholt Estate.

Indulge your palate The local estates and manor farms are very proud of their food products and not least drinks. Frederiksdal Estate produces award-wining cherry wine, and at Krenkerup, not far from Sakskøbing, beer is brewed. There is a restaurant at the brewery, where you can enjoy a good beer and something to eat if you want. Otherwise you can find Krenkerup beers in the Kvickly or Super Brugsen supermarkets and enjoy them where you like.

The sun is just peeping over the horizon, and it is still dark in odd corners and crannies. But there is also plenty of activity, because in the market town of Sundkøbing people get up early in the summer. Cocks are crowing between the houses, and in the merchant’s house the kitchen maids lit the fire in the stove a while ago. The stable lads are busy feeding the horses and taking special care of the ones the local knight, Henrik Svane, will ride at the tournament. At this great tournament later in the day he will be defending the honour of the town, and the many traders and visitors to the market are sure to work up a suitable atmosphere of excitement. We are back in the year 1415. At a strategic point between the main road and the glittering waters of Guldborgsund you will find Sundkøbing, also known as the Medieval Centre. The town is a careful reproduction of

medieval life in the early 15th century, and at the same time the centre is a research project, so people follow the lifestyle of the period, while all buildings and clothing are made of authentic materials as they were at that time. One of the greatest attractions is the daily tournament, where knights charge in on their noble steeds to joust in fierce combat. Another popular event is the firing of the centre’s two trebuchets, hurling huge stones or balls of fire at the enemy several times a day. In 2015 the Medieval Centre can celebrate its 25th anniversary, and it is continually being extended with new buildings and events. Most recently, a church is being built in the town, and naturally, the process is entirely on medieval terms, from the tools used to the production of the lime used for building.

Light over Lolland

in a class of its own Susanne Grue Jørgensen is the Artistic Director of an internationally recognised festival of world class culture. It includes opera, ballet, film premières, classical music, theatre, graphic arts, sculpture and more. Each year culture enthusiasts gather in late summer on Lolland-Falster, where the Light over Lolland festival has proved to be an outstanding event. Among the organisers is Susanne Grue Jørgensen, who promotes art and culture and lives at Søllestedgård on Lolland. “The idea came to me because we have so many professional artists on Lolland-Falster. People rarely saw their work here, because they primarily exhibited it in other parts of Denmark

or abroad. So why not create a local event where we gathered forces?” she explains. She and the composer, Gunnar Møller Pedersen, developed the concept of Light over Lolland, and together they organised an event in the riding hall of the Pederstrup estate. “We wanted to link up theatre, graphic art and music. There are lots of exciting buildings that stand empty, so they would be part of it. We chose Pederstrup quite deliberately, because there is a lot of cultural history there, where Reventlow lived. Today it is built up around the Reventlow museum,” says Susanne Grue Jørgensen. That formed the central theme for what was to become a regular annual event in culture. Over the years, the festival has been held in venues varying from industrial buildings and warehouses and a disused sugar factory to empty barns. “We decided from the start that we would not compromise. We have very deliberately worked with professional artists to create something not found elsewhere. Much of what you see at Light over Lolland is specifically created for the occasion, and each year we are also able to show sneak previews of films by major directors from Denmark and abroad,” says Susanne Grue Jørgensen. When it comes to films, the experienced film critic, Ole “Bogart” Michelsen is responsible for the practical arrangements, and the whole event is organised by highly experienced people together with a faithful group of local volunteers. Chamber ensemble The Danish Chamber Players (Storstrøms Kammerensemble) form one of five basic chamber ensembles in Denmark. They are required to give concerts, teach and promote classical music in the region. The ensemble has an unusual complement of a flute, clarinet, bassoon, harp, piano, violin, viola and cello, which gives it a distinctive tone, and its repertory extends from the Renaissance to completely new compositions. It is unique among Danish ensembles, and is based at Fuglsang Manor, which has a long, historic connection with art and culture. Rolf Viggo de Neergaard and his wife Bodil, a grandchild of the composer I.P.E. Hartmann, entertained many distinguished guests. These included Edvard Grieg and Carl Nielsen as well as other great musicians and composers of the time. Several of Carl Nielsen’s works were performed for the first time at Fuglsang, and the 150th anniversary of Carl Nielsen’s birth will be the theme for the theme for the Danish Chamber Players’ time-honoured summer concerts in August 2015. Fuglsang art museum Next to Fuglsang Manor is the attractive Fuglsang Art Museum. The award-winning building was designed by the British architect Tony Fretton in 2008, and houses Danish paintings, sculpture and art on paper from 1780–1960, with emphasis on the period from 1850–1950. From 12 June – 30 August the exhibition “Ege-ekspeditioner/Oak expeditions” can be seen, with works by graphic artist Ole Lejbach and writer Jens Blendstrup, showing oak trees with stories to tell. Altogether there are about 70 huge pencil drawings – portraits of oak trees, details of a single tree, or a whole tree in the surrounding countryside, accompanied by new texts. The proud giants of Lolland Among ancient tumuli, legends and myths, the Dodecalith links the past to the present. Long, long ago, when the seas rose and the waters flooded people’s homes, a tribe from the far south left their home country and set off northwards. They were civilised and had a rich cultural heritage. They called themselves the Lolers. One of their tribes settled on the island known today as Lolland after these people who migrated there about 7500 years ago. The story comes from the composer Gunner Møller Pedersen and sculptor Thomas Kadziola’s giant outdoor art installation “The Dodecalith”, which is being constructed on Ravnsby hills, looking over the Småland Sea. Dodecalith is a Greek word meaning twelve stones. The monument will consist of twelve stone pillars, seven or eight metres high, forming a circle with all their faces turned towards the centre. Thomas Kadziola is the creator of the huge stone figures, while Gunner Møller Peder-

sen has composed some special music for the site – and the Lolers. Because these stone figures sing! The area along the coast between Ravnsby and Ravnholt is already dotted with prehistoric monuments: there are more than 70 burial mounds and passage graves. Over the centuries, there have also been beacon sites on Ravnsby Bakker – high points where signals were passed from one to the next by lighting fires. The first stone block for the Dodecalith came to Lolland from a quarry in Sweden in 2010. It became Baldur, the first of the giants in the monument, and was exhibited for a short time at the centre of Copenhagen. The figure was carved in a single piece by hand, using a chisel. The artist works at a site in Herritslev, and access is free for those interested in following his progress.

For the lads You might think real blokes don’t go to museums, but in fact some museums on Lolland-Falster are specially for you. And yes, they are all about motors! There is a tractor museum with 200 tractors and 100 motors dating right back to 1880. If that just stimulates your appetite, it is not far from a motorcycle museum. The painter Erik Nielsen decided in 1976 to donate his collection of 80 motorbikes to the museum, and today the collection has grown to 230 motorcycles, with 170 continually on show. The motorcycle museum also includes a radio museum. And if that is not enough, Nykøbing Falster also boasts a fire-engine museum where you can see the big red fire-engines from the early 20th century. Above the fire-engine museum is a hairdressing museum, so there is something for the lasses too.

Museums and galleries Most people know the feeling. The more choices you have, the harder it is to choose. We have tried to group some of the museums and galleries according to common factors, and hope it will make your choice easier.

The history of Lolland-Falster The museums give you a chance to learn about the whole of Lolland-Falster’s history, from the earliest times to the present. At Det sorte Geomuseum in Gedser you can go right back in time and see dinosaur fossils, eggs and eggshells. Moving to historic time, you can see what life was like in the 19th century at the Open-Air Museum in Maribo. From more recent history you can see traditional craftsmanship at the Old Forge, sugar production at Danmarks Sukkermuseum or printing at Det gamle Trykkeri. At the Polish workers’ hostel you can learn more about the agricultural history of Lolland-Falster and the seasonal workers who came from Poland to work in the sugar beet fields.

Art for all tastes There really are large numbers of artists who have settled on Lolland-Falster, so you will have many opportunities to visit galleries and arts and crafts shops. You are sure to find something to suit your taste. In some places single artists exhibit their own work, and in others groups of artists exhibit together.

the old market towns The old market towns on Lolland and Falster simply exude history and atmosphere. There is usually most going on in the shopping streets and the town square, but other attractions are within walking distance. Maribo grew up around the 600-year old cathedral which dominates the town, and a few kilometres away in Sakskøbing, visitors are welcomed by Saxine – the smiling water tower and town mascot. Nysted is another historic town and has one of Lolland-Falster’s most beautiful yacht harbours, while the broad pedestrian streets in Nakskov conceal cosy little alleys linking the town centre and the harbour. In fact each town has its own little surprises, which you will not always notice at first glance.

Maribo

Abbey and pilgrim centre In 1416 monks were sent from the abbey in Vadstena in Sweden to the village of Skimminge on Lolland to found an abbey. Around the abbey the town sprang up, which we know today as Maribo. After a fire in 1596, which left the town church in ruins, the abbey church took on the status of church for the town, and in 1804 it was designated as a cathedral. The church is sited beside the beautiful Maribo lakes, and for centuries the town has spread upwards behind it. Even so, the church stands as a landmark, towering above the low buildings around the town square. It is not immediately possible to see that there is still an abbey in Maribo, Saint Bridget’s Abbey, where the nuns still live and work. It is even possible to stay at the abbey. You can also visit the pilgrim centre, where the ecclesiastical history of Maribo is presented.

Nature park with the Maribo lakes – right in the town One moment you are walking along the friendly streets in the town, and the next moment you are out in the countryside. The comfortable town life in Maribo goes right to the lakesides and the Maribo Lake Nature Park, with the cathedral mirrored in the water of Søndersø.

Kaj Munk’s birthplace The priest and poet, Kaj Munk, was born in Maribo in 1898. Take an evening walk with the night watchman who goes on a regular route in the summer and can tell you his story.

The most southerly market town in Denmark, Nysted, is full of beautifully restored houses and steep, narrow streets. The town itself is part of the experience, and if you take a walk along the culture trail, you will be guided round a series of its features and a fascinating mix of history, culture and more recent architecture. You will see the old buildings, many with fine characteristic doors and gateways. There are also a number of galleries and exhibitions of art and craftsmanship. By the harbour the cosy atmosphere fills cafés and restaurants. Next to them is the smoking and salting house as evidence of the one base in Denmark from where seals were caught until 1960.

Time for a coffee break? At the baker’s shop at no 19, Adelgade, you can enjoy something to eat with your coffee in the friendly café. You are welcome in the garden of the Aarestrup Museum, at 80 Adelgade, even when the museum is closed. Bring your own coffee and enjoy the lovely historic surroundings.

The carillon on the Town Hall On the Town Hall in Nysted there is a very special carillon. Since 1987 it has played the tune of a Danish song or hymn every hour, changing the tunes to match the seasons.

History of the town

The old market town of Sakskøbing is well protected, nestling at the end of the beautiful Sakskøbing Fjord. From the harbour, right at the heart of the town, the Fjord path leads out to Maltrupvænge, the yacht harbour, and back round the lake along Kalkbrænderivej. Along the way you will also find Saxenhøj farm, where visitors are welcome to see the animals.

Sakskøbing received its charter as a market town in around 1240, and many of its old buildings still tell the tales of its lively and enterprising trade. No. 5 on the square, which is now a pizzeria, was the Town Hall for a period after 1784. At that time the building had no upper storey. Also on the square is Saxkjøbing Hotel, which was once one of the largest merchants’ houses in the town, and the remains of another former merchant’s house can be seen through the gateway by the shop that sells animal feed.

In the middle of a church service in 1659 there was an incredible event: a cannonball was shot through the vaulting of St. Nicholas’ church in Nakskov, and hit a tombstone in the floor in front of the altar. The tombstone was split in two, and the powder exploded, setting fire to the altarpiece, which was only two years old. No one was seriously injured, and the fire was soon put out. However, the altarpiece has to be repaired, and can be seen, together with the cannonball, in the church today.

Among other things, Nakskov is known for many buildings designed by known architects. One of the most active was Einar Ørnsholt, who designed multi-storey buildings in town and single houses. One of his most famous projects is Ole Kirks Allé, built in 1944. In 2014 it was designated Denmark’s most attractive social housing.

On the site of what is now Svingelen there was once a village called Krogsbølle. The village dates back to the Middle Ages, but even earlier, some 14,000 years ago, there was a village where some of the earliest inhabitants of Denmark lived.

One of the first industries in Nykøbing was the Bruunshåb iron foundry, located in Slotsgade and what is now Staldgård. The buildings have all been demolished except for the director’s house, which faces on to Slotsgade. It is still clear that this was once the foundry director’s home: the windows, balcony and staircase are all made of cast iron.

In Lille Kirkestræde and Bastebrostræde there is a fine example of road surfacing as it was in 1900: hewn paving stones and two gutters at the roadsides. Opposite Lille Kirkestræde is Troldestræde, a very narrow alley with natural cobblestones that were not hewn, and a single gutter in the middle. That is what the paving looked like in the 17th century – if there was any paving at all.

In the water beside Brogade (Bridge Street), when the water level permits, it is possible to see the remains of piles of the old Christian IX bridge, which connected Lolland and Falster until the present bridge was built.

Tips for Shopping

You will not see any big shopping malls. Instead you will find towns with their own individual charm and selections of shops providing a good day’s shopping for everyone.

If you enjoy flea-markets, you will find lots of those on Lolland-Falster. Especially in the spring, there is barely a weekend without a flea-market somewhere or other on the islands.

Nakskov

Nykøbing

Nakskov is the largest shopping town on Lolland, and everyone enjoys exploring the wide pedestrian street or the tempting little streets down to the harbour. There is a fine selection of shops, from big chains like H&M or Matas to the local shops like Nikolai, which sells a wide range of clothes from well-known brands.

Nykøbing Falster is the largest shopping town in the region. The pedestrian street is long, with plenty of good shops. Besides big chain stores there are smaller shops with a more exclusive range of goods. Several times a year there is Late Night Shopping, with particularly good offers.

Maribo Maribo, at the heart of Lolland, has a friendly little shopping centre. Starting from the market square there are excellent shops in both directions, selling everything from lovely evening dresses to expensive branded clothes, or books and toys.

Many of the towns on Lolland-Falster are market towns. They received their charters in the Middle Ages, and have had their influence on trade on Lolland-Falster ever since. So it is quite natural that the ancient market towns are still centres of commerce and places to go shopping.

VISITS TO THE BIG CITY Lolland-Falster is surprisingly close to big-city excitement. Going south, Berlin and Hamburg are not far away. On ferries from Gedser and Rødbyhavn, it is easy to get to Germany. Trains run to Hamburg, and if you book a trip to Berlin in good time, it is not at all expensive with the Eurolines buses. If you prefer to stay in Denmark, it is not far to Copenhagen. Apart from the direct motorway route, there are both buses and trains. The trains are frequent, or on the 900 bus you can lean back in your seat and forget about the traffic. Another great idea for an outing is Odense, the 4th largest town in Denmark. The picturesque town centre and places connected with Hans Christian Andersen are well worth a visit. The ferry from Tårs in West Lolland sails to Spodsbjerg on Langeland, which is not far from Odense. You can also take the bus all the way: route 800 runs between Nykøbing Falster and Odense.

Tourist agencies (open all year) There are four tourist information offices on Lolland-Falster, with green ‘I’ signs. They will help you find accommodation, and they sell fishing permits, camping passes and “krochecks” for local inns. In Maribo you can buy tickets for tours on the boat Anemonen and the Museum Railway, and in Nakskov you can book guided tours on Nakskov Fjord. You can go on tours of the towns or hire cycles at both places.
