Close to

Rostock – Twin city to the south Guldborgsund Municipality and the Hanseatic city of Rostock have had a close relationship for more than 10 years. We want to continue to get to know each other better and involve the strong communities and active local areas across the Baltic Sea. Together we will make our part of the world an even better place to live and visit. Therefore, we stand together to promote tourism, culture, education, business development and transportation.

Did you know that: • I nterconnect is a new EU project that aims to promote sustainable public transport across the borders between the five countries bordering the Baltic Sea. • T he project will also strengthen the close collaboration between citizens, institutions and authorities in Rostock and Guldborgsund Municipality. • C ollaboration between Rostock and Guldborgsund Municipality has grown steadily since 2009, and in 2014, the two mayors signed a twinning agreement.

4

VisitLolland-Falster.com

Beautiful wooden ships in race to Rostock Nysted Shark Cutter Festival & Regatta is an exciting example of fruitful and international collaboration on maritime heritage with our good neighbours to the south. This year in August, for the 10th time you will be able to watch these magnificent old fishing boats race from Nysted harbour towards Warnemünde and Rostock Port. The regatta is the official prologue to the big Hanse Sail in Rostock. A city that celebrates its 800-year anniversary in 2018.

Good travel connection between Rostock and Nykøbing Falster Good infrastructure is the alpha and omega for close collaboration across the Baltic Sea. Rostock and Guldborgsund Municipality have ensured an interconnected Nykøbing – Gedser – Rostock Central travel connection, where the bus timetable is coordinated with the ferries. Electronic signs have been setup along the route, in buses and on the Scandlines’ ferry with information about the current bus and ferry times.

Cultural exchange in Gedser The local Gedser citizens have close ties with the twin city of Rostock. They have arranged a large number of classical concerts here with ensembles from both countries. The old Marine Station at the southernmost point of Denmark regularly hosts art exhibitions, which are produced in a Danish-German collaboration. And at Gedser Depot, the German and Danish Olsen Gang Fan Club have done a fantastic job with the relocation and renovation of the beautiful ‘Yellow Palace’. The Danish cinema heritage and the Olsen Gang are still on track!

Better bus service to Marielyst A new EU project called Interconnect will now help even more people to get to know each other better across the Baltic Sea and make public transport even better. This also applies to the bus service between Gedser and the popular holiday resort of Marielyst. This means that, the foreign guests and foot passengers on the ferry have easier access to the great experiences on Marielyst square and the beautiful family-friendly beach.

It is no coincidence that the wide, white Marielyst Beach has repeatedly been voted the best in Denmark. With its excellent swimming, lifeguard tower, large holiday park, and lots of activities and eateries, the beach has something for everyone. To the south, not far from Marielyst, is Fribadestranden Bøtø, which is an official naturist beach.

Nysted Beach, also called Skansen, is named after the ruins of the nearby fortifications. The beach is a few hundred metres from the harbour and is very well maintained; seaweed is removed and fresh sand is added several times a year, so it’s always inviting.

Along the south coast of Lolland, the inviting sandy beaches are like pearls on a string, and you can easily find five lovely beaches to visit in five days. To the west lies Albuen beach, where you also can experience the breathtaking Nakskov Fjord. Maglehøj Beach is cleaned every third week by local associations and at Kramnitse the beach has a bathing jetty and wheelchair access and is suitable for surfing. A little further east is Bredfjed Beach. Here you will find a very child-friendly beach with rare wild plants, and on the other side of Rødbyhavn and the beach at Lalandia, you will find Hyldtofte, a lovely wide sandy beach with dunes.

Denmark’s warmest swimming water can be found at Hestehoved Beach at Nakskov. A quiet, child-friendly sandy beach in the beautiful countryside out towards Nakskov Fjord and campsite. Great places to eat and close to the marina, which also offers beach volleyball and mini golf.

Bandholm Beach with a look at history The fine, white Bandholm Beach was constructed in 2016, and only a few metres away is Denmark’s oldest public bathing facility with bathing jetties and water slides. The beach is part of a beach park with benches and an excellent opportunity to take a break after a visit to the nearby Knuthenborg Safari Park. Your sweet tooth can be satisfied with Bandholmer ice cream from the nearby kiosk.

Stubbekøbing beach with a bathing jetty and harbour From Stubbekøbing there is a view of Grønsund and Bogø, and not far away you will find the beautiful bathing jetty. The beach is within walking distance of the cosy harbour, where there is a café and a maritime atmosphere. You will find a nice car park at the end of Strandvejen, from which you can simply walk through the grounds to get to the beach.

Right by the beautiful nature

MArielyst Marielyst is encompassed by most beautiful nature, surrounded by dikes, forests and one of Denmark’s best beaches. Among the best beaches in Denmark In total you will find 20 kilometers of soft white sand beach on the east coast of Falster. The beach in Marielyst has a lifeguard on duty in the summer, it is child-friendly and has been named Denmark’s best beach three times. When the sun is shining there is nothing better than relaxing on the beach while the kids play in the shallows. If the children are not in the mood to swim and play in the sand, there is a large nature playground by the beach. Experience nature at South Falster The dike at South Falster was built to protect the area against flooding, but lends itself well to a walk or run. From the dike you have a view of the forest on one side and the ocean on the other. The nature close to the beach is quite unique, and it is an experience to study the rich fauna. There are also good opportunities for cyclingexperiences in the area. Bøtø Plantation and Bird Sanctuary Bøtø plantation south of Marielyst on Falster is a special nature-experience. Right now a large scale project is underway to transform the pine forests into brighter forests with open plains to be grazed by cattle and wild horses. A few years from now, you will be able to find a range of Denmark’s rare animal species here, including the white-tailed eagle, nine different kinds of bats as well as rare butterflies such as the Sooty Copper. Fishing The beaches around Marielyst are well suited for fishing for garfish, sea trout and flounder. You’ll also find several put and take lakes in the area. If you want a special fishing experience, you can go on a fishing trip on one of the local boats - ask for the departure times at the tourist information.

Denmark’s Southernmost point

App

Min Landsby (My Village) Download the Min Landsby (My Village) App, find Gedser, and go and explore the town and the area’s exciting venues and events.

Feel the power of nature It is impossible not to have respect for the power of nature when standing at Gedser Odde with the wind blowing, while the large Baltic Sea waves crash on the shore and erode the clay cliffs. There can be no wind on one side of the point, while the wind rages on the other. Take a walk along the water’s edge and see what washes up. Maybe you’ll be lucky and find amber or fossils. At the tip of the point you will find Sydstenen (The South Stone), which marks Scandinavia’s

A visit to the southernmost point of Denmark is an exciting experience for the whole family. Gedser has wild countryside, exciting activities and delicious culinary experiences.

southernmost point. It weighs four tonnes and is about one billion years old. A world of animals from the past In Gedser town you will find, amongst other things, The Black Geomuseum that invites you into a world of exciting animals from the past. Explore fossils and amber that were found at Gedser Odde and take a journey through the evolution of life on the planet. The museum is open during the summer, Easter and autumn holidays.

Delicious cakes and handicrafts Visit Købmandsgaarden in Gedser, where art, culture and cakes go to a higher level. Here there are handmade crafts at affordable prices, changing exhibitions of local artists and a cosy organic café with delicious home baked goods. Do not miss out on a delicious ice cream from Islingen, which is Købmandsgaarden’s homemade organic ice cream. Købmandsgaarden also acts as a tourist information and bicycle hire centre.

Perhaps you’ll be lucky and find amber or fossils Café with more Have lunch at Toldcaféen – a nice retro experience with good food. Enjoy Yvonne’s layer cake with coffee on the square, or a cold beer for lunch in the company of the Olsen Gang. In good weather you can sit outside on the small square in front of the cafe, where the Gedser lamp is setup. The café also offers activities such as the Viking game of Kubb, petanque and swing tennis. Toldcaféen is a social enterprise run by the home Toldhuset.

Gedser Smokehouse The Black Havnegade 2 • DK-4874 Gedser Geological Museum Tel. +45 20 10 30 75 gedserroegeri@gmail.com www.gedser-roegeri.dk

In the footsteps of the Olsen Gang At the Gedser Depot Railway Museum you get the story of “the railway’s golden age.” Here you can see the old train carriages up close. The museum is close to Gedser Station, which was the backdrop for Korsbæk in the Danish TV series “Matador.” The command post “The Yellow Palace” is a must-see for Olsen Gang fans. It is known from the film “Olsen Gang on track” and for many years it stood unused in Copenhagen, before it came to Gedser last year and was refurbished. Smoked goods the old-fashioned way At the fishing harbour of Gedser is Gedser Smokehouse. They sell beautiful smoked goods like cold and hot-smoked salmon, smoked prawns, bacon, cold-smoked porter marinated tenderloin and various smoked cheeses. Delicious snacks, selected wines and local beers are served on the terrace. The smokehouse has a unique location with stunning views of the Baltic Sea. Historic idyllic village South Falster’s oldest village is called Gedesby. Here you will find a cosy idyllic village and a rich history existing in perfect harmony. Gedesby was first mentioned in the year 1135, and history says that Czar Peter the Great landed at the then Rostokker Ferry Port. Gedesby Windmill is a Dutch windmill that is over 100 years old with an interesting history. The mill is beautifully situated on the approach road to Gedesby and is definitely worth a visit. Food with a beautiful view Restaurant Najaden is located at Gedser’s charming marina, with views of Rødsand seal sanctuary, Guldborgsund and Ålholm Castle. The cuisine is varied with a good combination of modern and traditional. Enjoy a creamy fish soup with prawns, fennel and Pernod, fresh fish or a good steak. Najaden also brew their own beer and have both a lunch and a dinner menu. Gedser Water Tower There is a magnificent view from the top of Gedser Water Tower of Denmark’s southern- most point, Gedser town, the ferry port, the marina and the beautiful surroundings. With binoculars you can watch for seals in the sanctuary at Rødsand, and in clear weather you can see all the way to Nysted, Rostock and the wind turbine farm at Rødsand.

Crazy about animals

Visit a farm and pAt an animal Is there anything cuter than a calf with big, dark eyes, or more charming than a hairy pig, rolling in a puddle of mud. In the Danish South Sea Islands, there is ample opportunity to visit the farm animals, which is always a hit with the youngest family members. Here are our suggestions for three places where you can go and say hello to the animals, and maybe get close enough to pat them on the head.

Lammehave Økologi

>

Here, organic meat, flour and vegetables are produced and sold at the farm shop. On top of that, Lammehave Økologi is a private social employment project. Tourists are welcome to visit the farm, have a chat with the staff and say hello to chickens, horses and the many sheep.

Kernegaarden on Fejø

Saxenhøjs Visitor’s Farm

>

>

This farm on the small island of Fejø is famed for its production of apple juice and quality cider. The apple orchard and cider works are open for tours, just as it is possible to stay on the farm for several days as part of a vacation. Everyone is welcome to say hi to the goats, the free-range cattle, the rabbits, the rooster and the farm cats.

The farm used to be a traditional farm, but for the past 20 years it has been run as an organic farm open to the public. The farm has many different animals, and most of them like to be patted. Horses, cows, goats, sheep, pigs, chickens, geese, cats and rabbits. During the summer, however, the largest animals are put out to pasture.

FLEX HOUSING – YOUR SECOND HOME

Gallery Finnermann

Use an all-year house as a holiday home

Modern Art and delicious tapas

A flex property is a great alternative to a holiday home. You can use a flex property all year round. It can be a little town house, where you become a part of local life, or a big farm in the country, where you live in natural beauty with no close neighbours.

A gallery of modern, abstract art and tapas restaurant in a unique, historic building. The artist Finnermann has decorated this gem in the old, yellow warehouse. The house is a remnant of a time, when there was a royal castle in Nykøbing F. - and the royal coachman stables are still on the grounds behind the gallery. Enjoy good food in the historical setting, while looking at modern art and Fair Trade products. The emphasis is on local food and beer - and fresh bread from the local bakery. Every Saturday throughout the summer months there is music in the courtyard at 1 p.m.

All you need is a permission from your municipality. In Vordingborg, Guldborgsund and Lolland Municipality we approve the vast majority of houses as flex housing. Check with your local estate agent about flex housing or see more on www.flexbolig.nu

Step into the world of animals The vigilant meerkat watches as the rest of the pack dig caves and enjoy life. When you pass the cheeky little squirrel monkeys, you will get some inquisitive stares, and if you meet Luna, the tiger, you may be greeted with a roar. At Guldborgsund Zoo & Botanical Garden, you will be invited to get close to the animal world. The garden is divided into sections, allowing you to view the animals in what is as close to their natural habitats as possible; on the Australian plains, kangaroos hop by as emus watch. Otters play pranks in the Asia enclosure where Ib, the turkey vulture, watches from above. In the rain forest, where the humidity is high, cotton-top tamarins lie in wait, and in the woodland undergrowth, giant turtles and crested partridges roam. In the footsteps of dinosaurs Embark on an exciting journey through time in the Dino Garden and see the beautiful plants that dinosaurs lived among, 65 million years ago. Try the exciting climbing course that runs through ferns and giant horsetail, but watch out for the dino eggs and rampaging dinosaurs! In the large Dino-sandbox exciting fossils and animal tracks are just waiting to be discovered. Monkey business and relaxation The playful monkeys are not the only ones allowed to climb around. On the Nature Playground, you can challenge your mum and dad on the obstacle course. If you like fun games and competitions, all you need to do is go exploring; there are many of them around the garden. When you get hungry, you will find many cosy nooks where you can enjoy your own food and in the summer, the cafe is open. Get to know the animals Guldborgsund Zoo & Botanical Garden is the place to go if you want to get to know all sorts of animals. You can get close to the African mountain goats, who love to be petted in the Children’s ZOO, and although the donkeys are ever so stubborn, they also like to come and say hello. Meet the five naughty thieves, also known as the squirrel monkeys. They keep an eye on all the guests. In other words: A visit to Guldborgsund Zoo & Botanical Garden is wildly wonderful.

Go on a journey through time As you step through the gates of Sundkøbing, you are taken on a journey back to the year 1406. You stand in the middle of the village street, where you can hear the blacksmith’s hammer and the cock crowing, smell the bonfires and see the women peddle their goods in the square. Have a chat with the townspeople and hear how their lives are and how they see the world. Medieval tournaments and war machines The immense medieval war machines are an experience in themselves. For example, see the world’s oldest and perhaps largest trebuchet in action - it can throw stones, dead animals or even humans as far as 300 metres! Also, do not miss the spectacular jousting tournament, where the town knight, Sir Henrik Svane, invites foreign knights to duel for honour and glory. Future technological wonders See, try and discover some of the great, medieval inventions, such as the car, the lift

and the machine of perpetual motion. In the Technology Park, you can test a number of the technological marvels of the Middle Ages in full scale - even the ones that never really materialised, as they did not work quite as intended. Magical creatures of the Middle Ages In The Magical Forest, you can experience some of the supernatural beings of the Middle Ages. Meet, for example, the Hel horse; a ghost horse with just three legs, heralding death in the family, or the Nix, who took the little children. Many creatures dwell in the magical forest - pay them a visit if you dare! Eat as they did in the Middle Ages You can combine the trip with a visit to the Golden Swan, where medieval food is served using ingredients in existence in the Middle Ages. The inn has an open fireplace, a servants’ hall with wooden benches and plank tables, as well as Sir Svane’s grand banquet hall.

Revykøbing (Revue Ville)

The Nykøbing Falster Revue Festive and funny revue in an attractive setting. That is how the traditional Nykøbing summer revue has come to be known.

A good Danish revue can baffle, insult and seduce. It can dig into the Danish complacency and deliver political messages and funny sketches. It combines song and dance with social satire and jokes. The Nykøbing Falster Revue is one such revue.

Denmark’s second largest revue For many years, the Revue has been one of the region’s major attractions, and each summer, audiences arrive from near and far. The revue is the second largest in Denmark (after the Cirkusrevyen) and has won several awards, including the ”Revue of the Year”, ”Funny Man of the Year”, ”Composer of the Year” and ”Writer of the year”. The entertainer Flemming Krøll runs and stages the revue. This year marks his 28th anniversary, and he himself is part of the ensemble.

The most famous directors of the revue are Viggo Brodthagen who held the post from 1947 to 1967, and Victory VolmerSørensen, 1972-1978.

Lots of EXPERIENCES IN NATURE for adults and children

“The NATURE LAND” Beautiful scenery, beautiful lakes, small cosy trails and plenty of water. Lolland-Falster has - naturally - been nicknamed “The Nature Land.” Here, you can get close to vibrant wildlife and beautiful nature. > Biking, hiking, kayaking and horseback riding

Nature on Lolland-Falster

In addition to the three nature-resorts, there are a host of other great wildlife areas. The coastal landscape by Saksfjed Hyllekrog to the south, with its magnificent bird sanctuaries and the opportunity to encounter sea eagles. Islands in the Småland waters to the north, which offer peace and quiet and not least the opportunity to meet both seals and harbour porpoises. The Horreby Lyng high moor with its traces of past peat cutting and new plank paths which allow you to get close to the area’s special fauna. The beautiful, vast forests of central and east Falster. Through a large restoration project, the Bøtø plantation south of Marielyst on Falster is being transformed into bright, wild forests to be grazed by cattle and wild horses. Here, a number of rare animal species will have their favourite haunt, and the area will become a tourist destination for those who want to experience untouched forest. Lolland-Falster is also known for its magnificent manor landscapes, housing a wealth of cultural and historical gems. The many old estates, churches, villages and ancient monuments lend character to the landscape on Lolland-Falster.

>

Lolland-Falster offers something for everyone. Here, in The Nature Land, you will find there are perfect opportunities to experience nature, whether you want to experience nature on foot, by kayak, bicycle or horseback. Regardless of your preference, The Nature Land has a route for you. Lolland-Falster presents exciting and beautiful nature experiences for everyone don’t miss it!

Nakskov Fjord, the Maribo lakes and Guldborgsund

>

We have three unique nature-areas. In West Lolland, you will find Nakskov Fjord Nature Park. In addition to the beautiful nature, the fjord is also the one in Denmark with the most islands. In the heart of Lolland, the Maribo Lakes Nature Park provides a rich flora and fauna. Among other things, the wildlife in the nature park includes a large population of sea eagles which will fascinate anyone. The Guldborgsund nature area is the waters between Lolland and Falster, where the conditions are perfect for kayaking. There are also great bicycle routes along the coast on both sides of the strait.

Nysted

A little gem on southern Lolland

The small picturesque market town surprises most with its narrow, winding streets, idyllic houses and lively harbour. A multifaceted active area with a good trade and business community. The countryside around Nysted Nysted is located at the end of Nysted Nor – a beautiful natural harbour on Lolland’s southern shores. The area is a Ramsar & Natura 2000 area with a rich bird, animal and plant population that is enjoyed best on foot or by bike. There are many cycle routes, hiking trails in the woods, along the coast or around the town. At the entrance to the cove are the redoubt fortifications and Nysted Strand – a lovely park area, perfect for the family who want to go out and enjoy the countryside and the water. The beach is a child-friendly sandy beach.

Associations Although Nysted is an old town – with a market town charter dating back to 1409 – and even though we are an old trading and shipping town surrounded by farms and agriculture, we are proud to say that Nysted today is also a modern town with an active and vibrant business community with associations and enthusiasts working to promote the area and keep track of the many activities available. Here Nysted Business and Tourism Association (NET), see www.visitnysted.dk and Nysted and the surrounding area committee (NOF) www.nysted.dk are highlighted in particular.

History & Culture Nysted stands as a shining example: Denmark’s southernmost and smallest market town with an exciting, beautiful and well-preserved urban environment that reflects centuries of history and activities. Nysted is known for its two unique events: The Shark Cutter Festival & Regatta with beautiful, old wooden sailing ships, and the internationally recognised Nysted Medieval Festival, which has a fantastic atmosphere, jousting, theatre and a lot of other entertainment. Both events take place in early August. A relatively new activity is the Nysted Seal Safari, which offers daily trips with the boat DROST in July and August, and also the small Seal Museum, close to the pier in the former gear and smokehouse that housed the seal hunter Landt brothers’ activities up to the end of 18th century.

Shopping facilities: The old market town has grocery shops, a florist, bicycle and moped dealers, petrol stations, antique and secondhand shops, a vet, hairdresser, chemist, library, estate agent, hunting and fishing shop, as well as a bakery, butcher and smokehouse. At both Nysted Butcher (Nysted Slagteren) and the Old Smokehouse (Det Gamle Røgeri) you have the opportunity to buy goods that are produced locally. If you are looking for up-close experiences combined with something good to eat, these two shops are definitely worth a visit. The Old Smokehouse is helping to keep the traditional methods alive, so enjoy the many types of smoked products. At Nysted Butcher you will find hook aged meat for the barbecue, as well as sausages and salt cured ham from our own sausage maker.

Places to eat/accommadation: In the cosy harbour there are good restaurants, which together with the town’s other options of everything from a hot dog stand, kiosk and pizzerias to gourmet restaurants, are ready to welcome guests. In addition to the town’s hotel, there is the idyllic half timbered accommodation, The Cottage with a restaurant and hotel on the outskirts of Nysted alongside Nysted Strand Camping. Just a few kilometres from Nykøbing F. is Fuglsang Manor. A historic building from 1869, which offers accommodation or can host meetings and celebrations in the middle of the most beautiful park is adjacent to Fuglsang Art Museum and the Danish Chamber Players (Ensemble Storstrøms) domicile.

There is a cycle path from Nysted harbour that goes past the old medieval castle of Aalholm, through woods and fields, directly to Stubberup.

Local beer

Well-brewed beer on Lolland and Falster There is ample opportunity to taste some great local beer when visiting the region.

Historically, Lolland-Falster has been the site of many large breweries, including the now closed Nykøbing Brewery and Maribo Brewery. However, as the big breweries shut down, a subculture has sprung up with many home-brewers and even more beer enthusiasts who prefer beer with more character than the well-known quick-brewed lager. Beer enthusiasts meet in small associations such as Lolland’s Beer Guild, Nykøbing Beer Club and Danish Beer Enthusiasts, where tastings are arranged and there are brewing competitions. Many of the home-brewers who have been involved here are now professional brewmasters. The microbreweries are praised for their product, which is brewed with care and patience. Jes Jonigk is a beer and wine merchant at Marius Mortensens Efterfølger in Nykøbing, and also the recipient of the Danish Beer Enthusiasts’ regional beer award 2017. He is very enthusiastic about the local beer. “Very high quality beer is brewed on Lolland-Falster. Krenkerup is the driver - they always deliver top quality beer and they have high capacity. But the level is also high among the microbreweries and home-brewers.” Jes Jonigk actually believes that many of the home-brewers could easily make a career out of beer. “At the local beer club at Nykøbing, the annual brewing championships are held among the

members, and some of them could quit their jobs tomorrow and make a success out of producing beer”. Krenkerup beer is easy to find and available in supermarkets and wine merchants in the region, or you can visit the eatery at the brewery just outside Sakskøbing. You can also find places where you can buy well-brewed beers from microbreweries. Idasletten microbrewery near Kettinge on Lolland, also produces mead and honey and has its own farm shop where beer is sold. Juels Bryg in Søllested started in 2017 and is also worth a visit. They soon found a popular place in the local area when the local tourist office presented them with an award for the local initiative. In South Falster is Væggerløse Håndbryg, with former wine merchant Martin Iversen. He also started his own brewery in 2017, having previously produced wines with grapes from Falster-grown vines. There is also Bryghuset Riis in Nykøbing, which is one of Denmark’s smallest commercial breweries. After seven years as a home-brewer, Jan Riis Sørensen became a professional brewer in 2014. He is now expanding his capacity, opening a true brewpub in the old cinema arcade in the pedestrian zone in Nykøbing.

Rich in history

Beautiful lakes, abundant wildlife and picturesque scenery. Maribo Lakes Nature Park has it all. The lakes are located in a magnificent manor landscape withing walking distance of the town, and there are spectacular outdoor experiences waiting for you there, whether you have come to study the fascinating bird life, take a guided tour with the boat Anemonen or simply to enjoy the peaceful nature.

Maribo has a rich history dating back to the 15th century’s monasteries, and therefore, the cathedral is also a natural starting point for a historical walking tour of the town. On selected days, you can walk around with the night watchman, where he will sing verses in the streets like they did in the old days. Museumsbanen takes guests to and from Bandholm on Denmark’s oldest running steam locomotive. Maribo County Museum, located right next to Maribo Station, exhibits art and history. Everything within walking distance

Kaj Munk wrote this about his hometown: “It is possible that there are just as beautiful places in the world, but there are none more beautiful than Maribo.” When visiting the town, you will find that nature, trade, culture and experiences are closely linked and within walking distance ... but allow plenty of time. The tourist office can help with suggestions for activities and experiences.

Leonora Christina The story of Leonora Christina Ulfeldt, Christian IV’s daughter, is an important part of the history of Denmark, but she is also part of Maribo’s history. For the final years of her life, the princess lived at the monastery in Maribo. Visit Maribo Cathedral and feel the presence of history at the Maribo monastery ruins, which was founded by the Bridgettine Order. The Bridgettine nuns are still in the town and they run a retreat close to nature, where you can rent a room for short or long period.

post boat The wide ship’s hull glides slowly through the waters of Nakskov Fjord with its many islands. After half an hour by boat, Postbåden arrives in medieval times on Slotø, where there is a castle, “Engelborg”, built by King Hans in 1509. The castle is actually more of a shipyard than a castle. Here they built ships between 1509 and 1534, and some of them were the largest in the world. Later Christian IV came to the island and built ships from 1623 to 1633. Postbåden continues its journey in time and arrives at Enehøje. Some of the first people who came to Denmark lived here. From 1926-1940 polar explorer Peter Freuchen lived on the island. Here he sat in “The Blue Smithy”, edited “Out and Home” and wrote a lot of his books.

Denmark’s oldest and best preserved schooner, Johanne, is normally moored in the harbour too. This is the mouth of Nakskov Fjord, which has more islands in it than any other Danish fjord. The fjord’s natural beauty and rich wildlife can be seen from the post boat. Another way to enjoy the fjord is to drive to Albuen. After parking the car, there is a five-kilometre walk to the end of the landspit.

>

Nakskov has been a shipbuilding town for centuries, and the harbour is not far from the town’s main street. You can see the commercial harbour and yachting harbour.

You can also see his bronze statue of Peter Freuchen if you sail on the post boat to Enehøje in Nakskov Fjord. Nakskov’s cultural life includes an active theatre, various choirs and several museums, such as the Ships & Shipping Museum, the Sugar Museum and the printing works (Gamle Trykkeri).

Mertz

Jagt & Fritid Mertz Jagt & Fritid is the local tackle shop, whether you are a hunter, angler or just love the outdoors. Drop by one of the two large shops in Nykøbing and Nakskov and step into a world where being a little overwhelmed by the large selection is unavoidable.

Fishing tackle and equipment Mertz Jagt & Fritid has the largest selection of fishing tackle and equipment in the region. Here, you will find equipment for virtually all types of fishing, be it inshore fishing for sea trout, sea fishing for flatfish and cod or something else entirely. The two stores also sell live bait and fishing licenses and are great places to prepare for your fishing trip. Lolland and Falster have some of the best conditions for inshore fishing. Partner Jens Agner elaborates: ”We are happy to help with directions to the good fishing grounds and a few tips regarding the gear you need”.

Outdoor Whether you are a dog walker, take regular walks or perhaps even do trekking, you will find a wide selection of outdoor clothing, casual wear and footwear for both men and women. This includes wellington boots, hiking boots, waterproofs and casual wear in the highest of qualities. ”We dress people properly, no matter the season”, says Jens Agner ”but you are also welcome to drop by just to be inspired”.

Hunting Since the beginning of the new millennium, interest in hunting has been on the rise. Lifestyle researchers believe the growing interest in hunting to be deeply rooted in modern mankind, as an alternative to an increasingly sedentary office life. Hunting enthusiasts will have a great experience visiting one of the shops that has everything in clothing and equipment for hunting in Denmark and abroad, stocking all the famous Danish brands. Both novice and experienced hunters can get expert help from Mertz Jagt & Fritid.

Fish on the hook

Angling

Whether you are fishing from the shore, the lake or at sea, there are good opportunities to bring home both memories and catches from Lolland-Falster. Angling is freedom Fishing is about the freedom to just enjoy life and be present in the moment. Along the coasts of Lolland-Falster you can always find space, and there is both advice and inspiration to be found from the locals and skippers who have great knowledge of the sea and fishing grounds in the area. If you want to hone your fishing techniques and adapt them according to the season and different species of fish, the nearest fishing shop isn’t far, where you can upgrade your gear and get tips and advice.

70

VisitLolland-Falster.com

Get your best catch in the Baltic Sea You can fish all year in the Baltic Sea and there are good options to plan fishing trips with friends, be inspired by dedicated anglers and find activities for the whole family. You can fish directly from the long stretches of shore on the Baltic Sea or book a trip by boat. If you like deep sea fishing, fishing boats sail from selected locations and if the weather is not suited to fishing from a boat, you can try your luck at one of the many Put & Take lakes. Sail out to sea M/S Svend, M/S Kirsten and M/S Drost are just some of the local fishing boats that sail from Lolland-Falster’s coast. Booking is necessary and remember a valid fishing licence.

A GOOD TIP

Parking Park in Kragenæs and walk to the Dodekalitten via the Glentehøjstien path. Read more here: www.dodekalit.dk

72

VisitLolland-Falster.com

Dodekalitten In a field on northern Lolland, 12 tall menhirs stands. The Lolland ’Stonehenge’ has been named the Dodekalitten and celebrates the legendary people, the ’Lolers’, believed to have come to Lolland over 5000 years ago. Back then, they erected 12 stone monuments in a circle, and it is claimed that the stones regularly sang together. Beautiful and alluring choral singing, which entranced, and frightened, the locals. By midsummer, we are told, the song was especially powerful, and the brave locals who ventured close enough on midsummer nights reported floating women who danced around and inside the stone circle.

The artist behind the Dodekalitten is Thomas Kadziola, and you can also see his carved stone faces in the cityscape by Nykøbing F. Theatre and on the waterfront in Nakskov. The multi-ton granite blocks are brought over from Sweden and transported to Lolland in one piece, after which the faces are carved out using hammer and chisel. So far, Thomas Kadziola has carved four faces, but it does not matter that this process takes several years when the Dodekalitten might last a millenium.

Step into another world

GALLERIES ON LOLLAND-FALSTER Lolland-Falster’s many small galleries invite you into the heart of the local art, there where it is created.

78

VisitLolland-Falster.com

Art should be seen in reality. Preferably close up where it is possible to see and feel it – literally. Therefore, it is a great experience to visit the small galleries on Lolland-Falster, admire the works and feel the atmosphere while artists work. Here the colours, thoughts and ideas are lifted to another level. A world without stress When you step over the threshold of one of the local galleries, you enter a completely different world, where everyday stress disappears, while you take in the many new sensory perceptions. Prepare to be surprised by

South Lolland Sydlolland is characterized by its reclaimed land and the beautiful dike, which is the longest in Denmark, spanning 63 km. Take a bike ride or walk on the dike, where you can admire the yellow rapeseed fields’ contrast against the blue sea. Or treat yourself to a meditative moment on the dike at sunrise or sunset. The area is also excellently suited for kite-flying.

The beautiful rugged nature

Also worth a visit

The Polish barracks in Tågerup tell the story of the Polish seasonal workers who came to Denmark in 1893 to work in the sugarbeet fields. Lungholms Manor is a beautiful estate where larger groups are welcome to spend the night and throw large parties. Vindeholme Castle, located in a small ”magic forest” visible from the dike, is also a good spot for hosting celebrations. If you want to have a look into the near future, you can find Femern A/S InfoCenter on Langelinje in Rødbyhavn, where plans for the future tunnel construction can be seen. Globen - Visual Climate Center in Holeby shows how climate change affects the world. Sydlolland’s coast boasts the small scenic ports of Kramnitze, Rødbyhavn, Lundehøje and Errindlev Harbour, which offer plenty to take in.

>

Sydlolland has a wonderful range of rare wild plants, birds and animals. In the areas behind the dike, you can meet the whistling toad - one of Denmark’s rare amphibians - as well as sea eagles and beautiful singing swans on their migration. At Hyllekrog you can visit the more than 100 year old lighthouse and experience one of the most beautiful vantage points in Denmark. Sea eagles nest here and you can look in on life in the eagle’s nest via the webcam at Lyttesholm Nature Center. In the area between Hyldtofte Østersøbad and Brunddragerne you can see the wild horses from the dike.

Before the Lolland dike was built, a storm surge killed 80 people and thousands of livestock. If you are interested in history, the story of the surge can be experienced at Stormflodsmuseet in Gloslunde and at the Memorial Park in Rødby Fjord. Rødby is an old trading town and seaport, which, during the Viking Age, lay deep in the now dammed Rødby Fjord. The old warehouse, now located in Rødby, used to be the destination for the ships. Now, it is the warehouse located furthest from the coast in all of Denmark. In the warehouse you can learn about the area’s history.

The local COMMUNITY There are many shopping options in Rødby’s convenience shops and place to take a break in a café or pizzeria. Even though the town is characterised by the current development, with many empty shop premises, the town’s population are turning the tide through strong community, volunteering and optimism. An example of this is the “market town hotel” urban renewal project, where in a few years you will be able to stay in the old bookshop, hairdresser, the old prison and so on.

Lolland-Falster

A GOOD TIP

Lolland-Falster has many beautiful beaches ideal for a lovely excursion. Take a stroll along the water and feel the wind in your hair and the fine, white sand between your toes or enjoy the sunset hand in hand. At Slotsbryggen in Nykøbing, you can enjoy a bottle of chilled white wine amidst the cosy harbour environment, or treat someone to a delightful dinner at one of Slotsbryggen’S restaurants. Here, you can enjoy dinner and gaze into each other’s eyes, but do remember to take in the Slotsbryggen’s stunning views of THE GULDBORG STRAIT.

A quick dip from the famous bathing jetty at the Hestehovedet

Take a dip in the warm waters off Hestehovedet Beach on Lolland and take in the beautiful view from the famous bathing jetty (Denmark’s second longest) with your loved one. The jetty became world famous in 2015, when a local amateur photographer won an international photography competition with her photo of it. If you are looking for a romantic photo opportunity, the jetty is at its most spectacular at sunrise and sunset.

Pack a delicious picnic basket, grab a rug and experience nature up close. Lolland and Falster have many beautiful forests and natural areas that are ideal for a picnic. The Corselitze forests on eastern Falster combine green forests with white, sandy beaches, while Horreby Lyng lets you experience unique nature in Falster’s only raised bog, and at Roesporet (The Beet Trial) by Lungholm Manor, you can get an insight into some of the factors that characterised beet growing on Lolland. You can find more routes on www.spor.dk.

Cosying up at the harbour

When the sun is shining, a visit to one of Lolland-Falster’s many small cosy harbours is an obvious choice. Take a trip to Guldborg Harbour, where you can enjoy the view across Guldborg Strait and have a large ice cream, or enjoy a lovely meal in the harbour’s restaurant. Nysted Harbour, with its beautiful surroundings and its relaxed atmosphere, is another great destination for a romantic trip outdoors.

Experience

Lolland-Falster from the water Imagine gliding quietly through the water in a sailboat on a sunny day, simply enjoying the beautiful scenery around you. Or watching the landscape go by from the deck of a boat with a light breeze in your hair. Lolland-Falster’s beautiful coasts are unique and offer a wealth of beautiful, natural scenery. High-lying forests at Hesnæs If you sail east of Falster, a real natural gem awaits by Hesnæs. Here, the high-lying forests tower majestically on the steep cliffs sloping towards the Baltic Sea. It is said that Adam Oehlenschläger had Hesnæs in mind when he wrote the words to the Danish national anthem “there is a lovely country” (Der er et yndigt land), and it really is hard not to be enthralled by the beautiful landscape, which looks particularly breathtaking from the water. Dodekalitten: Legend of the Lolers On a Lolland field next to the Småland waters, twelve singing menhirs stand as a symbol of the legendary people, the Lolers, who gave Lolland its name when they arrived here thousands of years ago. The Dodekalitten monument is surrounded by four mounds, one of which is a Stone Age passage grave. Sail with the seals The area around Rødsand, south of Lolland, is the most important habitat and breeding area

for harbour seals in the entire Baltic Sea. Here, you can see the seals frolicking in the water or basking on land. The seals occupy the seal reservation all year, but there are particularly many in the breeding season in June/July. Offshore wind turbine safari South of the Lolland coast at Rødsand and Nysted, you can get close to one of the world’s largest wind farms. The immense blades reach a height of 110 metres, and are a fascinating sight. Nysted wind farm and its Rødsand II expansion are popular destinations, and can easily be combined with a seal safari. Denmark’s southernmost point As Scandinavia’s southernmost point, Gedser Odde on South Falster is definitely worth a visit. The landscape here is a testimony to the violent forces of nature. There can be absolute calm at one end, while the storm whips and eats away at the clay cliffs around the corner. The rugged southern tip at Gedser Odde is a stark contrast to the inviting, broad sandy beaches just a few hundred metres to the north.

hints and tips

for sailors The waters around Lolland-Falster are mostly uncomplicated - something for both experienced and less experienced sailors. Extra caution is rarely needed. Are you ready for it, there is every reason to explore the following areas. Sailing in Guldborgsund

Signalling at the bridges

Bridge of King Frederik IX

In the daytime: The international signal flag N (or, if this is not available, the national flag) hoisted half at the foretop as well as a long and a short blast with a whistle or a foghorn.

The water level south of Nykøbing is at least 1.80 meters at mean sea level, as long as you stay within the channel and otherwise operate in accordance with good seamanship. North of Nykøbing F. the channel is deeper. Note the water level on the water level board. If necessary, call the on-duty officer for aid or make a personal assessment of whether it is low tide - possibly using the Gedsergård Bridge as reference. Pay attention to the wind and current. Do not go up against the markings, hold up to the windward to be sure that you are in the middle of the channel. Passage height is 4 m below the leaf at mean sea level, when the bridge is in the closed position. 3.6 m below the fixed bridge span. Sail-through width is 20 m. For more information tel. +45 54 82 31 70.

Guldborgbroen bridge

At mean sea level, navigational clearance is 4 m below the bridge leaves, and 2.5 m under the fixed bridge. Sail-through width is 30 m. The difference between high and low tide is about 0.6 m. Only one ship may pass below the bridge at a time. For more information tel. +45 54 77 00 17.

Ships and vessels can require passage free of charge by signalling at least half a mile from the bridge, by:

In the nighttime: A white light at the bow and a long and a short note with whistle or foghorn Possible answer signals from the bridge by means of the bridge lantern: • A: 1 red steady light means that passage is prohibited. • B: 2 red flashing lights mean that the bridge will be opened for a ship coming from N • C: 2 red fixed light means that a ship coming from N may pass • D: 3 red flashing light means that the bridge will be opened for a ship coming from S • E: 3 red fixed light means that a ship coming from S may pass

bridge opening hours April 1st - May 31st, 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

June 1st - August 31, 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. September 1st - September 30th, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. October 1st - October 31st, 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

November 1st - March 31st, information can be found here: www.danskehavnelods.dk VHF channel 12 or 16

By day or night, a loud audible signal indicates that the bridge despite the emitted signal for passage can not be opened; if conditions permit, the signal for passage will be turned off.
