Taipei is the capital of Taiwan, and also Taiwan's political and economic center. The site is located in the Xinyi District, which has one of the highest densities of urban development in the city and is about 6.5 hectares in size. The site has served as a social welfare home for decades. In 2007, due to urban sprawl and renewal, the city government planned to use the land for public housing construction because of its great location and convenient transportation. However, most of the nearby residents are opposed to this new public development with the major concerns revolving around traffic, sunlight, safety, and open space issue. Due to the protest, the city government had to delay the construction schedule and reduce the development intensity repeatedly.
My thesis will take Bolo’Bolo as a reference and try to re-translate its spatial, organization and program principles in the context of Taipei, so as to explore the possibility of further development of co-housing in China.
