EDITORS’ LETTER Dear Readers, Two years ago we embarked on a journey to create content to encourage black women the world over to embrace the beauty, sophistication and pulchritude that mainstream media does not always project. Moreover, it was our strong desire to become a platform showcasing the talents, enterprises and achievements of black women. Our mission is encompassed in our name 1966, which was the first year that a black model graced the cover of Vogue magazine. Donyale Luna was told to cover half her face for that particular cover for fear readers would not be able to handle seeing her in her entirety. There is no longer any hiding, for black women have gone from obscurity to being sought after supermodels, entertainers, scientists, writers, designers, bloggers and even astronauts. The list is long and together we are adding to it everyday. Over the years you have let us know what you enjoy most about 1966 and we shall continue to feature the latest in fashion, beauty, hair, lifestyle as well as celebrity and historical spotlights. This month we have highlights from fashion week, features on fashion maven June Ambrose, singer Jill Scott, Tyra Banks and many more. Get your travel on by scrolling over to our lifestyle section to read about glamorous Paris, France. Learn of hair inspiration as well as beauty tricks straight from the runway, how to be productive even from your bed, fitness tips to get svelte for summer and urban brands that are emerging as the new face of street-wear. We are proud to be bringing 1966 magazine to you on a monthly basis and look forward to many years in the future. We hope that you enjoy our anniversary edition and as always happy reading! Sincerely, Alicia and Arianne Suggs

KES ADJEKUGHELE A WORLD-CLASS MALE MODEL
11 – 1966mag.com
12 – 1966mag.com
Benin, Nigeria born Kes Adjekughele can thank his African roots for his smoldering and versatile look not to mention his impeccable bone structure. He was discovered at a casting in New York. That fateful run-in has led to amazing photography shoots and walking for many well-heeled designers, which launched his career. However, before the magic of the runway, Kes traveled to the United States when he was two years old. In high school, while living in New Rochelle, New York, family and friends always suggested that he consider modeling but he was focused on his basketball career. In the summer of 2012, all of that would change. While playing basketball he had an accident that injured his knee and led to knee surgery. With basketball no longer being an option, that was when modeling came on the court. Not knowing where to start, a friend suggested that he make a Model Mayhem account. Soon thereafter, he began to connect with photographers and others working in the fashion industry.
13 – 1966mag.com
In 2013, Theo Hanson of E4 Model Management, later scouted Kes at a NYFW casting. A few months later he became an E4 Model. Standing at 6’ 3” Mr. Adjekughele has become a force to be reckoned with on camera.
14 – 1966mag.com
As a result of his hard work and tenacity, this handsome male model has been on a booking craze and has been able to shoot with many amazing photographers from Caviar Coleman, Seth London, Ja’dee Murphy, Joseph Bleu, Al Bracken, JD Barnes, Sean Micah and Horacio Hamlet. Working in the fashion industry has enabled Kes to also work with top-notch stylists such Raytell Bridges and Yasin Abdur also known as Dapper Afrika. During Fashion Week, he walked for many designers and was a part of dazzling fashion show presentations such as Mischka Velasco, Wood Underwear, Epperson and The Breckemberg Cricket Club just to name a few. In such a short time Kes Adjekughele has accomplished much in his career as a model and we are excited to see what the future will bring. When it comes to getting dressed this time of year it can be a little bit of a challenge. It’s not quite hot and it’s not exactly cold so the tug of war between winter as well as spring clothes begins. Avoid being bogged down with heavy fashions by investing in stylish patterned tights. They’ll keep you warm and will go great with skirts, dresses and a nice pair of distressed denim shorts. So then, get a leg up on spring fashion without having to compromise personal style.

Meet Crystal Ochemba the savvy businesswoman who started StreetAttics.com. This urban and street wear clothing line appeals to the eclectic college student that doesn’t like to fit in, to the classic Hip-Hop music lover that likes to rock a dope tee and maybe even a pair of nice frames. Crystal launched her company based on her passion for fashion, music and marketing. Armed with an MBA degree and a marketing background she has gone on to work with many premium brands like: PZI Jeans, Aoki Jeans, A3C Hip Hop Festival, Coca-Cola, Sparkling Ice, CayRum, Atlanta Falcons, State Farm, Verizon Wireless, Blackberry and many more. So, what is the attic head lifestyle? It is someone who doesn’t strive to be an individual, they just are. They create their own fashion lane and crave eclectic fashion, individualism and creativity. According to Ochemba, “At Street Attics we take pride in handpicking our merchandise to make sure it fits our criteria perfectly. One criterion is that a brand must be unique.” Crystal’s dream is to share her passions and vision through StreetAttics.com. Well, we believe, as long as she continues to strive to be different and set trends instead of following them, she will make her dreams come true.

ETRO - WOMEN’S STILETTO
I am totally obsessed with Etro’s Womens Stiletto for 2015 Spring/ Summer. I don’t know about you, but I’m so excited that we can start ditching our closed in shoes for open toed to show off our cute little pedis. The lavender color of the shoes with the feather coverlet strap with tassel is divine. I feel like shimmying right now just looking at them. With the combination of a perfect heel height and just the right amount of support, you can wear these little ladies all night. I know I will. AVAILABILITY: etro.com
EL PASEO FASHION WEEK
10th ANNIVERSARY! El Paseo Fashion Week’s festivities kicked off with a fashion show featuring designers: Trina Turk, Kevan Hall, Lloyd Klein, Oliver Tolentino, Anthony Franco and Candice Held.
ANTHONY FRANCO You would think that the dried blood and sweaty demeanor of the models depicting boxers would be too graphic; however, it actually exuded a power and strength that was dramatic and bold. Even the male models were accessorized with rings, bracelets and other accoutrements that Muhammad Ali could proudly wear. Anthony Franco’s collection is for sassy women only due to its strong, hard and in your face vibe.
LLOYD KLEIN The LBD still reigns supreme as indicated by the Lloyd Klein collection. According to Klein, “it’s the woman who is supposed to shine and not the dress or being overpowered by accessories.” However, he still kept the LBD fresh by adding fringes, sparkles and the like. He has dressed everyone from Grace Jones, to Cassie to Nicki Minaj. His motto is that clothing should be made for women of all shapes and sizes because anyone can design a dress for a model that fits fashion industry standards so for him the challenge was to dress models of different proportions whether they were curvy or well-endowed up top.
EDUARDO LUCERO Regarding his models Eduardo Lucero mentioned, “When choosing models for our fashion shows, we always ask for as many girls of color, African American/Latina/Asian, as we can get because they just devour the runway.” While Lucero’s girls slayed the runway, we were just dying to get our hands on his collection! Eduardo’s designs included body suits, jackets that doubled as tops, wide leg pants and very chic zipper detailing. Beam us up, we are ready to go to Eduardo Lucero fashion heaven!
CANDICE HELD HOLDS OUR ATTENTION
KEVAN HALL SPORTWEARS COLLECTION
Designer Candice Held proved that all a woman really needs is the right dress. Her collection included beautiful prints and gowns of various lengths that accentuated the model’s shapes effortlessly. The collection would be excellent for summer holidays or jet-setting around the world thanks to their resort-like feel. We studied the looks and fell in love with the bow ties that held the gowns together in the back. Little details such as these made the collection a true delight to engage ones stylish senses.
Kevan Hall’s one year sportwears collection included many often over looked details especially from a style viewpoint. We especially took note of the vivid colors, which Hall told us he felt made the designs pop and encapsulated the season perfectly. We would have to agree one hundred fold that Hall’s designs were fresh and unpretentious.
TRINA TURK
OLIVER TOLENTINO
Trina Turk was the first designer to show during the 10th anniversary fashion show for El Paseo Fashion Week. Trina’s bold shades and tints made her collection vibrant and dynamic. It was as if her creations pulsated with electrifying and vivacious energy. We loved the zesty spirit and vibe of every piece.
If Cinderella could attend any fashion show she wanted, we are confident she would have been front row for this show! Oliver’s runway show began with a dazzling red dress in which the model twirled like she was, “Gone with the Wind fabulous.” Tolentino delivered one mouthdropping gown after another without letting any member of the audience come up for a couture breath of air. Each head turner piece was like a dreamy piece of fashion sophistication and fantasy.
STARS OF PROJECT RUNWAY 2015
For El Paseo Fashion Week designers formerly of the hit show Project Runway were not told “Auf Wiedersehen” which when translated means “goodbye” in German. The popular Heidi Klum send off to contestants eliminated from the fashion design competition show was replaced by applause and admiration from the packed out house of stylish onlookers. The show included Project Runway alums: Dom Streater, Daniel Esquivel, Michelle Lesniak, Patricia Michaels and a surprise guest appearance by the one and only Michael Costello!
DANIEL ESQUIVEL Daniel Esquivel’s beautiful collection clearly displayed his talents for originality and exquisite tailoring. His designs included a black and red color palette that was furnished with fringe as well as glitzy and twinkling embellishments.
DOM STREATER “QUEEN” OF FASHION WEEK Dom Streater’s designs were inspired by three powerful queens that changed the face of the kingdoms they ruled over and now Dom’s creations will forever change the face of fashion. We immediately noticed the Victorian collars and graphic logos on various tops proclaiming fabulous Queen-dom. Moreover, the prints held our attention without becoming a repetitive bore, each piece was unique and well executed. May Dom Streater’s glorious and stylish reign never end!
MICHELLE LESNIAK We got to catch up with the ingenious designer after the Stars of Project Runway Fashion Show who with her infectious personality and demeanor filled us in on the inspiration regarding her amazing collection. Michelle said her designs were inspired by hot air balloons, which was a sort of symbolism of her life and falling upwards. We loved the details of the ropes and tassels that brought Michelle’s vision to life.
PATRICIA MICHAELS Patricia Michael’s show started off with a big splash and carried the momentum all the way through! Her models strutted down the catwalk carrying gigantic umbrellas that complemented the trendy water lily garb. Some of the pieces that we fell in love with incorporated high splits, sheer fabrics, neutral shades and 3-D petals.
2015 COLLECTION MICHAEL COSTELLO Michael Costello’s runway show for El Paseo Fashion Week was brimming with so many show-stopping pieces we don’t even know where to begin! We gushed over his all noire designs that consisted of long gowns, jumpsuits and short flirtatious dresses with cut-outs. Backstage Michael shared with us that the collection was inspired by samurai warriors and each ensemble we saw fit the bill because they were fierce, sassy and extremely sexy. We couldn’t help but notice that bowties were a major theme throughout his menswear collection prompting us to ask Michael why he chose that form of tie over others. Costello mentioned that unlike women’s fashion which is extremely versatile, options for men’s fashions are a lot more limited. Costello felt that bowties added a little fun and quirkiness to his designs.

DEEP REFLECTION
ALICIA AND ARIANNE SUGGS are the co-founders and editors of 1966 magazine. During the past two years they have released 24 issues that have served to change the lives of black women forever. They now share how they began and were washed upon a new world filled of promise and pursuance.
Alicia on the beginning: My sister and I had wanted to do something together. I had a background in production/design and she had production/writing experience, so starting a blog and ultimately magazine just felt right. We noticed googling common topics in regards to black hair or beauty didn’t produce many results. So we felt having a magazine dedicated to such topics was a void we wanted to fill.
Co-Founder of 1966 Alicia on Fashion: I have always had a love for fashion and designer clothes. I was recently asked if I could only wear one designer for the rest of my life, who would it be? I’d have to say it would have to be Dior, because everything is timeless, classy & exquisitely designed.
Arianne on the beginning: We felt there was a clear market for the kind of content we would create. Growing up the Internet wasn’t filled with tons of images of black women and finding them in major magazines was also difficult. We wanted to give young black girls something we didn’t always have readily available...positive, uplifting and informative media that is made specifically for us.
Arianne on Style: Be true to yourself and just have fun with it. I think too many rules get made regarding how someone should or should not dress themselves. In my opinion, if you like it, you should wear it. Arianne on 1966: It’s fun to get to do something that you enjoy especially with family. Alicia is a great business partner and can always seem to marry our various ideas together. My advice on pursuing your dream career is to truly believe in yourself and make a schedule that you cannot break. Treat your dreams like they are more than a hobby or pastime and surround yourself with people that are just as hungry to succeed as well.
Alicia on 1966: I absolutely love working on every issue, I wouldn’t trade it for anything. 1966 was a goal that I really wanted to pursue and see come to fruition. My advice for anyone wanting to pursue their dreams is to expect long hours, trial and error as well as being persistent. If you keep knocking on a door it will be opened to you.

BEAUTY SPY RED LIPS
At the Michael Costello runway show we spied a boisterous red lip color being applied to the model’s pouts. The vivacious tint was not glossy or overly lustrous but matte and opaque. Application Tip: Make this daring beauty look your own by revealing the true shade of the matte red lipstick. Do so, by first applying concealer all over your lips prior to layering on your lip color.

Pluck N’ File
FOUR MUST HAVES IN ONE SLEEK, STYLISH TOOL Have you ever been getting ready for a night out on the town and you are frantically looking for beauty tools? You work up a sweat as you realize your tweezers are in your sock drawer, your eyebrow comb is in your travel bag, your nail file is in the medicine cabinet and your puppy is chewing on your nail buffer? You think WTF! There has to be a better way to keep track of all your beauty-grooming tools. Lucky for us, Dawn M. Sole, Founder and Inventor of Pluck N’ File; felt the same way. Due to her hard work and tenacity she created an all-in-one tweezer, eyebrow comb, replaceable nail file, and nail buffer. How did Dawn come up with the patented idea? Here’s the 4-1-1: One day while grocery shopping, Dawn was carrying several bags to her car. When she opened her car door, she chipped her nail. She placed the grocery bags in her car and dug through her purse to locate a nail file.
73 – 1966mag.com
Then, she had to dig through her purse a second time to find her nail buffer. She noticed the perfect natural light flowing into her car and decided if she was going to go to the trouble of repairing her nail, she might as well take advantage of the lighting and pluck her eyebrows as well. So she dug through her purse a THIRD time to find her tweezers. It was at this moment when the light bulb went off in Dawn’s head and the idea for the Pluck N’ File™ was born.
Surely Dawn was among millions of women who experience small beauty emergencies, or opportunities, at the most inconvenient times. What if all of these beauty tools could be combined into one, stylish and convenient device? Dawn saw the problem and wanted to create a solution for her and millions of women who, like Dawn, would appreciate the convenience and accessibility of several tools in one device. This innovative device eliminates the need for multiple grooming items, delivering everything you need in one stylish apparatus. I don’t know about you but I am getting one to keep in my car (you never know when you will have a beauty emergency), one for my purse and another for my bathroom! Oh, and it will make the perfect gift for my mother and sister…yes, and I will need one for my travel bag. By the way, you can get yours too! See below.

JUNE AMBROSE STYLIST TO THE STARS
SPOTLIGHT By Serena Harris
June Ambrose has dressed some of the biggest names in Hollywood and beyond. She has been given carte blanche by celebrities such as Missy Elliot, R. Kelly, Jay-Z and Diddy to make them look like a million bucks. And she has not disappointed her clients or the admirers of her work; expressing her creativity through fashion and design.
85 – 1966mag.com
In addition to glamming up the celebs, she also dresses the regular folks with her collection June by June Ambrose which can be found on HSN. In true June Ambrose fashion, all the styles in her collection are named after world famous divas such as Tina Turner and Diana Ross. It just makes sense that she would design a Moto Jacket with removable sleeves or a Faux Fur Vest cinched with a Sash Belt. Just like her, the collection does not disappoint.
Ambrose is also well known for the style work she did on the hit TV show The X-Factor. She briefly had her own TV series, Styled by June, in which she styled Da Brat, Jaleel White and others. Her style was also featured on other TV shows, such as Project Runway as a guest judge, on Rachel Ray sharing Style and Skin Secrets and on Canada’s Next Top Model as a celebrity judge. Even the Dave Matthews Band benefited from her expertise as she served as the stylist for their video documentary Dave Matthews Band: Listener Supported.
It is difficult, to say the least, for a person to make their mark in the world of fashion. June Ambrose hasn’t just left a mark; she has absolutely crushed the competition. We are so honored to be able to shine a spotlight on her trailblazing work in our big fashion issue this month. We wait with baited breath to see what Ms. Ambrose will think of next!

OF LIGHT

If you are planning to visit Paris this summer, there are a few things that you may want to know that can make your Paris visit a beautiful experience. Paris is the most visited city in the world. About 44 million people visit Paris every year. Paris is the capital city of France and is famous for its art, culture, theatres, museums and restaurants. Though there are many museums and tourist attractions in Paris, so you might not have time to visit them all. However, you won’t want to miss destinations like the Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe, the Louvre Museum, Sacre Coeur, Notre-Dame and the Cathedral. If you want to add more fun to your trip, consider renting a vacation apartment. Paris is famous for its rental apartments, and it is always a good deal to rent a personal vacation apartment than a hotel room in Paris. Don’t worry about getting around because the Paris metro system is one of the world’s most used metro systems. It connects the complete city, so it is easy to get around town.
If you have never been to New York and wonder what the “Statue of Liberty” looks like, you can see one in Paris. In the middle of the river Seine you will see the same Statue of Liberty as you see here in America. Paris is often called “The City of Lights.” People think that it is because Paris is full of lights, especially at night, but the reason is much deeper. Actually, the name was given to the city because of the large number of writers, scholars, artists and academics Paris has given to the world.

7HABITS HEALTHY TO IMPROVE YOUR LIFE We all have habits, some good and some bad. While we may not always remember to avoid some of the bad habits, it is good to at least establish a routine of some good habits. The seven habits listed below are good for improving the quality of your life and possibly even extending it. Incorporating some or all of these habits will help keep you healthy, happy and wise. Give them a read and then give some serious thought to making them a regular part of your life, you won’t regret it, on the contrary you will be glad you did. • Eat at least three servings of fruit and vegetables every day – This will provide some of the necessary nutrients for your body including essential vitamins and minerals. Vegetables that are red, dark green or yellow in color are especially good for you. • Stay active or keep moving – In other words get some exercise to help reduce your risk of heart disease, diabetes and certain cancers. Ideally, you will want to get 30 minutes of exercise at least five days a week.
97 – 1966mag.com
• Enjoy Green Tea – The health benefits to drinking green tea are numerous a few of which are lowering blood pressure and raising the level of your good cholesterol. It is fine to have a few cups a day, but to get the most benefit from the tea, allow it to steep for about 15 minutes. • Get Adequate Sleep – Chronic sleep deprivation is bad for your health and can increase the risk for heart disease, diabetes and shorten your life span. Try to get between seven and nine hours of sleep a night to protect your health. • Spend quality time with your pet – Pet therapy is good for lowering stress hormones in the body. Serotonin, the brain chemical responsible for moods, is increased, so playing with your pet is likely to put you in a good mood. Walking or playing with your pet also allows you to get the exercise you both need. • Do volunteer work – Believe it or not volunteer work can increase your lifespan. It gives you a sense of purpose and fulfillment, staves off loneliness and generally makes you feel good. Volunteerism makes a difference in your life and the lives of those you help. • Stop eating before you are full – To cut down on the amount of calories you are eating, it is good to stop eating once you no longer feel hungry but before you feel full. Eating less will help you maintain your weight or even lose some weight. Plus you avoid the guilt and discomfort that comes from overeating.
It takes time to form good habits so don’t get discouraged if you don’t start doing these things right away. Start with one habit and make it a regular part of your day and then incorporate another one until, gradually you are performing all of these good habits in your daily life. Continue to persevere and the good habits will pay off, perhaps you will live long enough to share them with your greatgreat grandchildren!

Many people strive to be dedicated to improving their fitness level by working out regularly, but very few know how to design a truly effective program. If there are issues present at the moment with your routine, take a look at making major changes as soon as possible. It’s important to develop a workout regimen that is highly customized for your body type. When you follow your custom workout to the tee, the potential for fitness is maximized almost overnight. Let’s take a look at a few tips that should come in handy for those looking to better their routines. What Does Your Body Need?
SETTING UP A WORKOUT ROUTINE:
ADVICE FOR FITNESS ENTHUSIASTS
The process of personalization is a big part of working out where most people tend to fail. Do not simply follow just what others are doing since somewhere down the road your body may not be able to handle the routine that you have embarked on to complete. Others may be at a higher or lower fitness level which could affect your workout in a negative way. It is important to be in tune with your body. For instance, let us assume that because you have joint pain the joint press is not an option but you have the option of doing dumbbell chest press instead. If you knew this ahead of time, would you still risk suffering more joint pain due to the fact that somebody else was doing this exercise? Of course not, you would do the dumbbell chest presses instead and achieve better results that way.

Intensity Over Quantity
Focus On Your Overall Timing
If you are starting the process of developing a fitness regimen, you must begin by identifying your goals. Your goal could be as easy as gaining muscle mass and losing weight. Intensity will be the main focus when trying to achieve those goals. In general, you will need intensity exercises to gain the most bang for your buck.
Many people make the mistake of mistiming how or how often they will workout. What does it mean to make these timing mistakes? For example, someone may exercise twice a day for no reason at all. There’s really no valid purpose for doing this, and it will make you very tired! There are even professionals that subscribe to this method, but they often have to take supplements to keep their body healthy or they are simply unusual in that they do not get hurt as often as others. The average individual won’t be able to do that, and this isn’t the type of regimens you want to be aiming for anyway.
Fewer reps with much heavier weights are much more intense than more repetitions with lighter weights. The overall work done will be less, and you will simply attain better results.

MAKE IT YOUR CHOICE TO BE HEART HEALTHY Heart disease is the number one killer of Americans; strokes are the number four killer. Obviously, taking good care of our hearts is of critical importance. This simple fact was painfully discovered by two-time heart attack survivor Julia Allen. Her brushes with this potent killer led her to make heart healthy changes in her lifestyle and she is now the 2015 spokesperson for the National American Heart Association. Check out her amazing story below:
It took two heart attacks for me to realize that I put everyone’s needs above mine. Your body talks to you and you need to listen!” - Julia Allen “Hi my name is Julia Allen and “I think I’m having a heart attack” is what I told the hospital registrar before collapsing. On a sunny afternoon Friday, April 15, 2013, I woke up feeling fine. I went to work and started feeling a little shortness of breath, heartburn, tightening in my jaw, and nausea, but you know the life of a Mom…we just keep right on pushing. “Maybe I’m coming down with something” was what I thought and tried to rest my eyes for second in the break room.
Later, I sat on a conference call and started feeling worse so I looked up the symptoms and saw “heart attack” coming up often. I was shocked but still dismissed the possibility and kept working. “I’ll shake whatever this is” yet the symptoms returned much worse. A few hours later, I went online again and came across The American Heart Association’s website. I started reading real stories by women who had symptoms like I was. I kept clicking and clicking, hoping to find a different diagnosis. Here’s where “that won’t happen to me” intersects reality. I sat there numb realizing that I was having a heart attack. I called my husband and doctor and they both told me to get to the hospital immediately. I chose not to call 911. Why? I was counting dollars and wanted to avoid the ambulance bill. I drove home first and left a key for my sons, made sure they had an afternoon snack prepared, and then drove myself to the emergency room. At this point, loss of oxygen was obviously affecting my brain!
103 – 1966mag.com
If I would have arrived any later, my story may have been much different. Myocardial infarction is referred to as a “heart attack”. With each passing minute, the heart loses oxygen. I was admitted and had my second heart attack that evening. Everything moved so quickly. I was in utter disbelief that this was happening to me! I lay in the bed in and out of medicated sleep and when they tell you life flashes before your eyes? It really does! My Husband! My Sons! My Parents! My Purpose! My Family and Friends! Is this really it? Is life ending this way? I had so many plans and goals yet to achieve. I had a laundry list of things I wanted to instill in my children! And then I prayed that infamous prayer, “God, if you allow me to live...I promise that I will live the purpose YOU have assigned me. No holds barred! I’m yours!” After months of cardiac rehab, therapy and nutritional counseling, my family and I ALL focus on heart healthy living. We’ve made changes to our nutrition and physical activity and my health choices have resulted in losing 30lbs and counting. Since my family has a history of heart disease, everyone in my family has been tested and we’ve discovered that my eldest son has high cholesterol. After seeing what I’ve been through, he is now making HIS OWN healthy choices! The survivors that shared their story on AHA/Go Red For Women’s website LITERALLY saved my life!! Had I not read their stories, I probably would have left work early to nap to a much worse outcome. In hindsight, I realized that I had my first heart attack around 8:45am. I waited until about 2:00pm to go to the hospital because I didn’t want to incur an unnecessary bill or wait in the emergency room only to have them tell me nothing was wrong. My health and wellbeing were clearly not my priority and my entire mindset needed to change! Now, a proud heart attack survivor, I’m ALIVE in more ways than one to share my story with EVERYONE!! My greatest lesson is that being healthy includes MIND, BODY & SOUL!! They work together for heart healthy living!! Slow down...take care of your beautiful self and please, make your heart a priority!
