EDITORS: ALICIA AND ARIANNE SUGGS
Dear Readers, Now that September is here, we have come to the painful conclusion that our days of bumming around in the sun are quickly coming to an end. We’re not the type of people to let grass grow under our feet at 1966 Magazine, so we are moving on to the fall and winter seasons. This month we give you a sneak peek of the fall and winter styles you will want to get your perfectly manicured hands on. After you have seen the runway, get to know our cover girl, Paloma Ford. Dubbed as the new sultry, goddess of pop, learn about how she got her start in the music industry, who influenced her and what you can expect on her upcoming LP. You will also be treated to several interactive features including an exclusive sit-down interview with the diva herself. Just because summer is ending doesn’t mean you have to leave your bikini body behind. In this issue we show you the ropes of building the perfect gym bag and teach you about the connection between weight loss and stress. In other words, you don’t get to pretend that fitness doesn’t matter just because it might be a little cold and dreary outside.
Grow a healthier head of hair thanks to the secret we discovered regarding hair masks. This hair secret is so simple you can even do it in the comfort of your own home. Besides keeping your hair in check, scroll over to our beauty section that’s brimming with more tips than a beauty queen could use. We’ll even let you in on a few of our personal editors’ picks! We know the fall/winter months can get you down sometimes, but we promise to do our best to keep your spirits up with lots of fun and entertaining issues to come. From travel to beauty, from fitness to fashion everything you need to know will be covered in the pages of 1966 Magazine. Happy reading!

FALL RTW 2014 GET IN THE KNOW FOR ALL THE LATEST 2014 RTW TRENDS
11 – 1966mag.com
CHANEL
C
hanel took their inspiration from food for Fall 2014 RTW, and completely and utterly changed the way we think about fashion and the places inspiration can be drawn from. Chanel, with it’s well-defined femininity, brought comfort as well by kicking off
the heels and going for tennis shoes. Chanel combines texture, patterns and, of course, layers to give you a modest alternative. Karl Lagerfeld said, “fashion’s a supermarket, so you might as well shop.” So, go ahead and draw from this Supermarket fashion extravaganza.
12 – 1966mag.com
BOTTEGA VENETA
B
ottega Veneta was chock full of cut and pattern-making, one that showcased Tomas Maier’s inventiveness. The collection had an understated beauty. A sense of comfort was one key to the collection’s appeal. Even though the collection was about bold colors and highly
outrageous silhouettes, it was still packed with so much energy.
13 – 1966mag.com
GIVENCHY
G
ivenchy’s fall-winter 2014 runway show at Paris Fashion Week was all about ladylike autumn ensembles. According to Creative Director, Riccardo Tisci, women are wearing silk blouses with soft pleats, knee length dresses and puffy fur coats this
fall. Tisci further said, “The collection is about celebrating femininity and the rock woman.” So to be in step with Givenchy, go with 70’s luxury with a 40’s Goth spin.
14 – 1966mag.com
LANVIN
W
ell if Rihanna is attending your runway show you must be doing something right. Rihanna was right in step with the collection wearing a fur shawl to balance out her all grey ensemble. Lanvin’s Fall 2014 Collection was really chic and
was the epitome of luxe fashion. The models were adorned and sashayed down the catwalk wearing rich furs, satins, pleated brocade and hats galore. Alber Elbaz truly created a collection filled with embellishments.

CLIENT A THE FASHION PSYCHOLOGY CASE STUDY CONTINUES
by DAWNN KAREN In case you missed last months issue: Client A is a young wealthy middle age Middle Eastern woman. She is a wife and a mother of one. She holds a degree in marketing/advertising and currently works as an advertiser for retail stores. Although she has worked in retail for several years, she struggles with her cultural identity. Studying in the United States has exposed her to a different cultural identity. Despite her best efforts, she has not been able to balance her Middle Eastern cultural identity and her desire to adapt American style to her culture. Ever since this imbalance has evolved, Client A has started to feel disingenuous. She often finds herself taking hours and hours to select an outfit from her closet. At the end of each day she feels as if she is not able to fully express herself through her choice of clothing. She is happy to be surrounded by her culture, but feels as if something is missing. Below discover my solutions or recommendations for this client’s unorthodox dilemma. Explanation Fashion Identification Assimilation - the tendency for an individual to create a bond with a culture other than, their own which is reflective in their form of dress. When Client A relocated to study in the U.S. she merged her style of Middle Eastern fashion to American fashion. Solution Fashion Situational Code Switching - the tendency for multicultural persons to alternate between different dress depending on one’s cultural social situations. When Client A is living within her own culture she must be sensitive to her culture’s values by acknowledging cultural norms. Practicing fashion situational code switching will allow her to feel genuine to herself.
Dawnn Karen is the founder of the Fashion Psychology field from Columbia University. She is based in NYC servicing clients worldwide. ~ fashionpsychologysuccess.com. Although she is based in NYC, she is currently touring Asia and the Middle East while servicing clients worldwide.

DYLANLEX FALKOR
The Falkor Dylanlex necklace is so breathtaking it is the ultimate statement necklace. I like to pair this necklace with a plain white T-shirt, leather jacket, Guess jeans and, of course, high stilettos. Made with antiqued Swarovski crystals, signature coins, and detailed Indian filigree, you are sure to get noticed because it is literally jaw dropping to see in person. So, if you want to spruce up a boring outfit or want to wear it on your next dinner date, go and get a Dylanlex necklace.

IN fashion they say you should
always have a blazer, LBD, white button down shirt and trench coat in your closet. A must-have for me has always been a red dress. I still remember being five years old and my mother purchased a red dress for me to wear on picture day. I felt strong, gorgeous and do I dare say a little bit sassy? Well, the power of red is no joke and even scientifically has been shown to have an effect on onlookers. Researchers say that the rouge tint is the warmest of all colors and denotes: love, passion, desire, heat, longing, lust, sexuality, sensitivity, romance, joy, strength and rage just to name a few.
A color that can achieve that kind of emotional reaction from people has to be worn. Ashanti wore a form-fitting red number that made her look like the belle of the ball. Since this shade is so powerful, you really don’t require many accessories and, the best part of all, it looks great on most skin tones. I hope you enjoy my picks this month and always remember that Cheap Can Be Chic!

THE DIET FOR BEAUTIFUL SKIN WE HAVE ALL HEARD THAT AGE-OLD EXPRESSION “YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT”. WELL IN ESSENCE, WE ARE! YOUR SKIN IS A DIRECT REFLECTION OF THE BASIS OF YOUR DIET. HIGH FAT, REFINED, SUGARY FOODS ARE USUALLY THE CULPRITS TO POOR SKIN TEXTURE AND UNSIGHTLY INFLAMMATION.
Here are 10 of my best tips for that healthy radiant glow. Start adding these skin loving beauty foods to your diet and watch the magic of healthy nutrition begin.
KALE: Classified as a green leafy vegetable, it is high in vitamin A and great for digestion. Kale has an ingredient called carotenoids, which is very rich in antioxidants. Juicing with kale detoxifies the liver and helps to combat inflammation of the skin. Other leafy green vegetables are spinach,

It is time to power-up your face-washing routine! Use an at-home facial appliance with a rotating, massaging brush that loosens dirt and makeup. Dermatologists prefer this cleansing option to scrubbing, as it is less harsh on your skin. Conditions, such as rosacea and acne, clear up and make the way to better looking skin. Nevertheless, deep cleansing is not the only method that can help your revive your skin. If you are someone who likes to wear makeup every day, have a day at least once a month where you do not wear any makeup. Taking such a break will allow your face to breathe a bit and it will help keep it healthy. You will notice the next day that your face will look a lot fresher.

Nail
YOUR LOOK It does not matter whether you wear your nails long or short; the most beautiful nail look or design are nails that are natural and well-manicured. To get those wonderful fingernails that are nice and long, massage Vaseline into your cuticles once a week. This will encourage nail growth because you are essentially feeding the new nail. Make sure when you are using nail polish, you are also using a top coat that will help keep your nails from chipping. Nevertheless, filing your nails is a wonderful way of making them look healthy. When filing, it is important to only go in one direction. Filing in only one direction will ensure that you do not cause any breakage from adding excessive stress to your nails. You also won’t have to deal with any hang nails that can snag. Most importantly, do not forget your hands need to be pampered too. Hands are often overlooked in beauty treatments. That is why it is said, if you want to know someone’s age, check their hands. In addition to daily treatment with lotion or cream, you should exfoliate your hands once a week.

HAIR BREAKAGE CAN OCCUR FOR NUMEROUS REASONS, RANGING FROM STRESS OR HAIRSTYLING THAT PULLS TOO MUCH ON STRANDS. LOCKS NEAR THE FRONT HAIRLINE ARE AT RISK MOST AND SHOULD BE PROTECTED AT ALL COST. IT IS BEST TO GET TO THE ROOT OF THE PROBLEM BEFORE IT PROGRESSES TOO FAR TO BE FIXED.
Photos: Zoom Team
GETTING TO THE
ROOT OF IT IF YOU HAVE DISCOVERED THAT THE HAIR AROUND YOUR FACE IS DRYING OUT AND BREAKING OFF, YOU COULD BE USING HOT IRONS OR OTHER HEATING TOOLS TOO MUCH. YOU COULD TRY AN INTENSE CONDITIONER OR CREATE YOUR OWN BY ADDING TWO TEASPOONS OF OLIVE OIL TO THE CONDITIONER, AND LET IT SIT ON YOUR HAIRLINE FOR FIVE MINUTES, AND THEN RINSE. REPEAT THIS ONCE A WEEK. STYLING TIP: NEVER STYLE YOUR TRESSES INTO SUPER TIGHT HAIRSTYLES (BRAIDS, PONYTAILS, TWISTS, ETC.). IF SUCH HAIRSTYLES ARE WORN, THEY SHOULD BE FASHIONED IN A WAY THAT THEY DO NOT TUG ON YOUR HAIR. SUCH CONTINUOUS YANKING COULD EVENTUALLY LEAD TO HAIR LOSS.

Outdoor dining is mostly popular for a few weeks early in the summer when people are excited to get out of the house after a far-too-long winter and it’s always too long. However, after getting tired of cheap plastic furniture and sitting on blankets over rough grass, many retreat to the comfort of their indoor kitchen and lavish dining room.
When you create an outdoor dining space, you are crafting a place that’s every bit as comfortable as the indoors with the benefit of natural light and fresh air that only the outdoors can provide.

Eating outdoors is also a great way to help foster a love for nature in your kids, especially if they’re cooped up inside nonstop playing video games or watching television.

TRAVEL TO BAHRAIN
FOR CHARM AND GRANDEUR
T
he Kingdom of Bahrain basks in the warm, clear and calm waters of the Persian Gulf. The local people are multi-cultural, liberal and tolerant towards other cultures. Arabic is the official language, although English and Persian (Farsi) are widely spoken. Bahrain is also a prosperous country. Offering visitors a cosmopolitan destination with exciting nightlife and incredible shopping! Today, known by its modern Arabic name, “Bahrain,” its landscape is a tapestry of marvelous old sites and colorful traditional markets dotted between skyscrapers and contemporary urban living. While relatively small in population, land area and resources,
Bahrain has achieved a high level of social and economic development over a short period of time. Getting To Bahrain U.S. citizens can obtain a 14-day visa at all border stations and airports. The fee is 5 dinar or $13. Bahrain International Airport (BAH), in Muharraq just east of Manama, is the main base for Gulf Air and has excellent connections throughout the region and London. The airport has great duty-free shopping for those awaiting flights.

When you land you can get a taxi. The official rates start at ($2.65) BD 1.000 plus 0.200 Fils per kilometer. In practice, taxi meters are always “broken”, covered, missing or just ignored, and you’ll need to agree on fares in advance. Beware cabbies will often ask for ridiculous prices. Weather Bahrain features a tropical desert climate, but due to land reclamation has very few beaches. Manmade beaches at luxury hotels are nice, but only accessible for a price. Winters are dry and average daytime temperatures are in the low 70s, nighttime lows in the 50s. Summertime is very hot and muggy, with daytime temperatures reaching 100 to 120°F and nights anywhere from 75 to 90°F. Eating & Drinking Bahrain has impressive dining with numerous restaurants to choose from. The hotspot is Adliya. In Adliya, you can take your pick among cafes, with Coco’s (very well priced and delicious food) and Lilou’s (very popular with locals wanting to see and be seen) among the most famous. Mirai is an incredible Japanese Fusion restaurant perfect for a special occasion. Trendy lounges and restaurants are in the area as well like Zoe’s and Block 338. The legal drinking age is 18. It is legal for Muslims to consume alcoholic beverages. Bahrain has relatively liberal laws regarding alcohol and has long been a favorite getaway for visitors from Saudi Arabia and other nearby “dry” countries — don’t be surprised to see Arabs in thobe and gutra sipping on beer as they watch dancers strut their stuff in the nightclubs.

WHIP YOUR GYM BAG
INTO SHAPE
At times it is hard enough to motivate yourself to get to the gym, let alone finding the time to pack a gym bag. Unless it is a bag designed specifically for the gym. Such bags are created to carry towels, water bottles, locker keys, and can even fit in a pair of sneakers.
Ideally, a gym bag should be large enough to tote everything you need for a comfortable workout and post workout session. It should be lightweight, sturdy, washable, and durable.

for the food industry to use in labeling products “gluten-free.” There is one caveat to the new ruling. Although given a year to be in compliance with this ruling by the FDA, consumers should know that some foods labeled “gluten free” that are in the marketplace may have been labeled before the rule’s compliance date of August 5, 2014. Some of these foods, like pasta, have a longer shelf life and may legally remain on the shelves a little bit longer. Therefore, it is possible that stores may still be selling some foods that are labeled “gluten-free” produced before the compliance date of the final rule. We all want to make sure we are getting the proper nutrition for our bodies. If you feel like you are better off not consuming products with gluten in them, you can be confident that now, any food that carries the label “gluten-free” is just that.

Vodka and orange juice allegedly gets its name from the tool used to stir the drink - a screwdriver. However, you might just want to use a spoon or stirrer. A screwdriver is a simple, but refreshing cocktail perfect for brunch. Total Time: 3 minutes Yield: 1 Cocktail Ingredients: 2 Ounces Vodka 5 Ounces Orange Juice Orange slice for garnish Preparation: Build the ingredients in a Collins glass with ice. Stir well. When it comes to vodka, you might want to try any of the following: • Belvedere is a great Polish vodka that comes in an elegant frosted bottle. • Grey Goose is one of the smoothest, most mixable vodkas. • Absolut is truly innovative with their flavors. Cheers!

CUCAMELONS ARE THE CUTEST, SMALLEST FRUIT EVER
Meet the Cucamelon, a “savory fruit” you can grow yourself. Is it a cucumber or is it a melon? Who cares, when it’s this adorable!
They’re grape-sized watermelons that taste like cucumbers with a tinge of lime. And they’re easy to grow. They’re native to Mexico and Central America. They also go by the following names: mouse melon, Mexican sour gherkin, Mexican miniature watermelon and Mexican sour cucumber. The plant itself is gorgeous and vine-like, and tends to yield a large bounty. It also has long curling vines and cute little yellow blossoms. See, I told you it was adorable!
