WEAR PRINTS

Fall 2013 Ready-to-Wear Richard Chai Love

PETITE: Don’t get swallowed up or overpowered by prints. Avoid clothing with huge prints that are too large for your frame. MEDIUM: Look for prints that run more vertically than horizontally. Horizontal prints can cause you to appear wider. FULL FIGURED: : Wear prints that have a darker background to achieve a slimming effect. Moreover, look for patterns that run closely together (spaced out patterns can add girth).

Your color is black and your fabric is leather. You are raw and edgy. You are not concerned with what other people think. Leather jackets are your choice for those cold days outside. VESTED INTEREST

Vests are a good alternative to a blazer when you’re in an area where it doesn’t get too cold. Those who wear vests have distinct characteristics of being well put together and tailored. Since it is cold, go for a long vest jacket that at least reaches mid thigh.

Nicole Miller Fall/Winter 2013 Collection

CALIFORNIA CHILL

California babes are super chill, thank God the weather isn’t. California never really gets that cold like the east coast. So you will see a lot of Californians wearing windbreakers, blazers or a shawl. If does get cold, go for a jacket like the one above that is still fashionable and has a lining of fur inside.

FEBRUARY 2014/1966mag.com

FASHION

T

he Hache Spring 2014 Collection was a fusion of the punk scene from the late 70s to 80s with a rockabilly style of the 50s. The Collection embodied a rebellious yet country combo that worked. The clothes looked comfortable and fun with the flair-ruffled hems. Manuela Arcari has created a collection of aged looking leather pants, pea coats, loosely pleated pencil skirt shapes even micro studded belts that cinched in the waist. On the feet the models wore comfy studded slide on flip-flops with a few ranging from red to black. There were also jackets in the collection that were studded with metal to give that rocker vibe. The overall palette comprised of red coral, pastels, blue, white, black and purple. The hair was a great co-star to the Manuela Arcari collection. The hair had to be first blow-dried then flat ironed to get it stick straight. Then each girl was given a deep side part on each side, the hair was gathered in front and was rolled into a shape that would make Elvis Presley take a bow. This was finished off with hairstyle spray and a high gloss spray to make the girls runway ready. All in all the Hache Spring 2014 Collection gave us this 50’s infused punker edge, which was very intriguing. We were given softness with some grit. So, thanks to HACHE we are ready to bring on spring.

CAN BE CHIC by: ARIANNE SUGGS

About 100 years ago, Coco Chanel designed what has become known as the LBD or Little Black Dress. This fashion design is still quite a popular trend within the fashion industry and is even considered to be among the top 8 fashion staples that should be found in every woman’s wardrobe. Not bad for a classy, chic dress that was created in a Paris fashion house a century ago yet it still portrays the original designer’s intention.

A celebrity in my mind that always works a LBD like no other is singing sensation, Ciara. However, it might be because her body is absolutely sick and she would look great even in a black studded paper sack. Nevertheless, her overall look is what every woman wants to achieve during a night out… sexy yet sophisticated. A LBD is an excellent choice for all women since it matches with all body types and skin tones and accentuates the positive body figure points as well as minimizes the negatives. Now that is my kind of dress! I did a little online searching and came across four great deals on little black dresses. Every last dress is $40 or less! My budget cup runneth over. Enjoy the deals and remember that

FAMOUS ENTREPRENEUR

HALLE BERRY Beauty Queen To Academy Award Winning Actress To Perfume Entrepreneur

T

he stunning beauty, Maria Halle Berry was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on August 14, 1966. Her parents Jerome and Judith chose her name because they liked to shop at Halle’s department store. Berry’s mother, a nurse, was of English and German descent. Her father, who was a hospital attendant, was of African-American origin. Berry suffered from discrimination while in school because she was one of only a few African Americans in a school with mostly white students. In later years, Berry admitted that the racism she experienced as a child only pushed her to excel in life. The early years did not show any indication of how Halle Berry would take the fashion industry by storm. And, if her teacher’s reports are to be believed, she was a bad, mischievous girl in school.

While in college, Berry began participating in beauty pageants. She found instant success taking the beauty contests by storm. Berry who won the 1986 Miss USA World has had a strong influence on beauty contestants as well as black performers on both sides of the Atlantic. Halle first attracted attention in 1986 when she reached the finals of Miss USA Universe one of the world’s top beauty contest awards - in Miami, Florida. Before that, she had won two beauty pageant awards: Miss Teen All American Pageant and Miss Ohio. In Miami, former host to the Miss Universe Pageant, the young Berry, who served as her own manager, finished second, ahead of 49 of America’s most beautiful and talented candidates. Sixteen years to the day before Miss USA 1986, Jennifer Hosten, a native from Grenada - an English-speaking Island on the Caribbean Sea - became the first black entrant to be crowned Miss World. In 1984, Vanessa Williams became the first black Miss America in Atlantic City. Halle Berry in the Miss World 1986! In the early 2000’s, Berry set precedent and made Miss World history when she became the first former beauty queen to win an Academy Award. Berry’s good looks and burgeoning acting career began to open up additional opportunities. With movies like Jungle Fever, Bulworth, Monster’s Ball and X-Men her popularity has never been in question. Berry became a spokeswoman for Revlon in 1996 and in 1999 Berry portrayed Dorothy Dandridge in “Introducing Dorothy Dandridge.”

FEBRUARY 2014/1966mag.com

In 2002, Berry joined an elite list of actresses when she played the role of a Bond girl in “Die Another Day.” Berry relived a classic Bond girl scene, acted out by Ursula Andress four decades earlier, when she emerged from the ocean wearing a skimpy bikini.

CELEBRITY

HALLE BERRY FRAGRANCES Halle loves perfume and was tired of mixing other fragrances, so she created her own. The floral/woody scent took two years to create and ‘stars’ fig and mimosa, her favorite notes. It is a casual, breezy and sensuous fragrance. Being of African-American descent, Halle Berry decided to get a little help from the Olibanum. Olibanum is an African root and is not very popular, as it has rarely ever been used in any fragrance until now. Halle wanted to use just a hint of Olibanum to add spice to the fragrance. This was balanced by a perfect mix of sandalwood, which helped in soothing the spice element added by the Olibanum. The end result - you get a fragrance that is lovely and has a very unique scent. Plus, it makes a statement of individuality.

HALLE PERFUME NOTES The top notes have bergamot, pear blossom and fig leaves. Any perfume from Halle Berry is sure to have some stamp of fig in it, as the actress herself loves this fruit. Luminous mimosa and fig ought to be integral to Halle perfume and indeed they are. But look at the base notes - sandalwood, cashmere musk, driftwood, Olibanum and amber. These are sure to make any perfume soothing and sensuous.

HALLE - THE DRIVING POINT IS... Halle perfume also allows women to express their somewhat wilder nature while appealing to women who like the freshness, texture and the transparency of the perfume. Unlike some celebrities, it is widely believed that Berry did not launch her perfume line as a celebrity stunt. As a matter of fact, she has been experimenting quite a bit with her perfumes and looking at the way people have responded to the Reveal Perfume by Halle Berry. I love her website because it says, “Halle Berry Fragrances. A woman has many facets... Some earthy. Some mysterious. Some Sensual. Always beautiful. Always glamorous. Always desirable.” If that sounds like you, click now: www.halleberryfragrances.com

Gone are the days

when one would dab their everyday lipstick on and call it a day. New makeup lines are launching cyclically, which means chemists have the ability to produce an overwhelming amount of polychrome palettes. Going down the makeup aisle or perusing through your cosmetic reservoir can be an astounding experience for today’s beauty consumer. Should I base my selection on skin tone, outfit, my favorite hue or the latest trend? And if I judiciously select a lip color, will I find this same hue already at home in my makeup bag? There is also the fluctuation of weather premise to select lip color based on the seasons.

POLYCHROMING Of Lip Color & The Mental Anguish Of Selection

FEBRUARY 2014/1966mag.com

BEAUTY

Try giving yourself permission to have a purpose.

When determining lip color, one should keep all of the aforementioned enquiries in mind. Avoid the mental anguish of feeling inundated by polychroming. You must begin by simply deciding the sole purpose for selecting a lip color.

WHAT’S A BEAUTY QUEEN TO DO?

www.twitter.com/FashPsycSucc www.instagram.com/FashPsycSucc www.FashionPsychologySuccess.com

Try giving yourself permission to have a purpose. Is it for a special occasion or to coordinate with an outfit? Next, determine the approximate climate conditions of when you will be applying your lip color. Bright colors are better suited for tropical temperatures and aphotic colors are better suited for more polar temperatures. Lastly, deciphering how the lip color makes you look and feel on your own terms is most pertinent. Never mind the consideration of selecting a hue on the skin tone premise. Remember “styling from the inside out” is all about “bridging the gap between perception and reality”.

HOW TO FIX

BEAUTY

BLUNDERS We all wish that we could be perfect, but let’s face it the occasional beauty blunder is going to occur from time to time. So then, what’s a girl to do if she accidentally creates raccoon eyes or lipstick teeth? Relax…mistakes may happen, but with these simple fixes it will just be our little secret.

2

EXTREME BLUSHING So you got a little heavy handed with the blush happens to the best of us. Avoiding this blunder begins by picking a blush color that is similar to your natural rosiness. When applying, concentrate the color at the center of the apples of your cheeks. Afterwards, blend with a brush or your fingers until it looks like the color is coming directly from your skin.

4

Wrong Foundation Color The makeup counter lady swore up and down the color matched you perfectly and then you went home. Of course, it’s best to see how foundation looks in natural light when testing, but if you’re still not sure after doing so then try it on your chest. Once the foundation shade has been applied to your chest, if you can’t see any trace of color, you’ve found the right one.

1

Lipstick Bleeds It’s on your chin and it’s on your teeth, now what? To prevent lipstick bleeding in the first place, line your lips with a lip liner closest to the shade or tint of the lipstick. Lip-lining acts as a barrier against lipstick bleeding, keeping the lip color safely inside the drawn boundaries.

3 5

Harsh Eyebrows Nicely drawn eyebrows seem to be all the rage as of late, but what happens if you get a little carried away? Brush the eyebrows with a clean Q-tip, going against the grain (direction of hair growth) of your eyebrow. You will notice how quickly the color you initially applied disappears.

Eyeliner That’s Running Away Due to heat or oily skin, even if a product claims to be smudge-proof, it may run for the hills - down your face anyway. Set the eyeliner by applying eyeshadow of the same color over the pencil; it will last longer and stay put.

6

Caked Face Excess foundation is a very common mistake when applying cosmetics. Correct this beauty blunder by lightly moistening a clean sponge with water (the sponge should be almost dry and without any makeup residue) and sponge your face with downward movements.

TOP 10 HAIR TIPS

FEBRUARY 2014/1966mag.com

Hair is made up of a hardened protein known as keratin. Maintain healthy locks by consuming foods rich in essential amino acids found in dairy and red meat as well as non-animal proteins such as grains, seeds and legumes.

10

HAIR

Protect hair at night with a satin scarf or pillow case to avoid breaking hair during rest. Regularly get tresses trimmed, approximately every 2 months to help fight split ends.

TOP HAIR TIPS

MANE

ATTRACTIONS

Avoid shampoos with sulfates as they strip the hair of needed moisture and natural oil, drying it out.

HAIR TIPS

Never style hair with hanging parts or exposed metal found in products such as clips, scrunchies, barrettes and elastic bands. Accessories such as those can tear or damage the cuticle. Deep condition hair once a month in order to prevent breakage as well as keep hair wellmoisturized.

When wearing hair back never pull hair tight at the hairline as it could lead to a receding hairline and permanently damage hair. Wet hair is very delicate, so then, be especially gentle with your hair when it is wet, and always use a wide-toothed comb or detangle wet tresses. Use a shampoo for color-treated hair and other color-treated products to maximize and maintain your results. Limit your usage of heat-styling tools, which dry out and damage hair.

STYLESTHAT How many times do we wish our children would care about their hair? Wear their headscarves at night, allow you to comb through without screaming, or stop experimenting with friends using tons of heat or cutting hair themselves. Have you had the bang scare? Where she cut her bangs too short and now it’s taking forever to grow back. Or the color scare where she lightened the hair with real bleach and then used Koolaid to make it purple or blue? I am here to tell you that all these things are going to happen as they learn about themselves, but you can help them explore in a healthy way.

Grow With Your Child

For children ages 5 to 11, I always suggest individual braids or twists. This will keep you from having to do their hair for at least 6-8 weeks and you can still moisturize and cleanse the scalp. Also it gives them the versatility of different styles. Especially if you have that budding diva who wants to play around in their hair, and for those of you who have children that are very active (i.e. sports, ballet, swimming etc.), you don’t have to worry about sweating styles out or breakage because its safely put away. As your children get older the last thing they want are braids, but you have to help them understand that if they are not ready to properly maintain their hair, braids are helping their hair grow. Braids can mature with their age. You can get human or synthetic individual braids leaving loose hair at the ends so they can curl or style with up dos. There is also the crochet braids where all their natural hair is cornrowed and hair is added in via crochet needle. The crochet look doesn’t show any braids and can be done with straight or curly hair. FEBRUARY 2014/1966mag.com

HAIR

For ages 12-18, most of the time they refuse braids and really want long straight hair. At this age some have taken an interest in caring for their hair and will wear their headscarves. You know your child’s maturity level so this suggestion is up to you. Rotate between braids/twists and train their hair with a professional press and flatiron. After their hair has been in braids for so long and you have kept their hair and scalp moisturized while in braids they should have a decent length and healthy hair. To prevent breakage and lots of heat wrap the hair every night to keep the bend at the ends and heat will not be needed everyday. Deep condition treatments once a month will keep moisture in the hair. Professionally getting it pressed will not damage the hair if you are using the right products in between visits. Again this suggestion should be based on maturity level and health of the hair. It’s really our responsibility as parents to train, maintain, and promote hair growth for our children. The foundation starts with deep conditioning the hair once a month or in between braiding styles. Cleansing the scalp with an antiseptic while in braids. Oiling not greasing the scalp to keep moisturized. If you are unsure on the products that will work for your child, take them to a professional for a consultation. Most salons provide consultations for little to no charge and will recommend the right products and maintenance plan for your child’s hair type.

Jamie Parker

SPOTLIGHT

IT’S ABOUT TIME Following your dream or reaching a goal can be a daunting task. It takes courage to go for the gold so to speak. If we don’t receive support and encouragement from our family and friends, we may be inclined to put off fulfilling an objective. Even worse we may be discouraged from pursuing a goal by those closest to us. Rest assured that you do not have to feel alone or overwhelmed. Jamie Parker is a man who understands how you feel. And he’s definitely got your back. Jamie was born and raised in the Bronx by a single mother. It would have been the path of least resistance for him to accept mediocrity or become another statistic. However, that was not an option for Jamie; instead he went on to graduate from Lehman College with bachelors and masters degrees in Biology. While getting his education he also kept himself healthy through athletics, garnering a championship ring for swimming along with numerous trophies and medals for track and basketball.

It is pretty clear that Jamie was a man on a mission but in spite of the aforementioned accomplishments, he wasn’t even close to being done with realizing his dreams. He worked as a researcher at Columbia University, became a published scientist and is currently working on his Ph.D. Besides his professional aims he is also a motivational speaker, community activist and mentor to young people. Understanding that everyone does not possess the same drive that he does, he seeks to encourage others to set goals and achieve them. With that in mind, he works to provide both parents and children with tools and networks to help them find success and reach their full potential. So, you think this is where the story for Jamie ends? Think again. In his constant quest to help others turn their lives around for the better, Jamie established his own watch company. A watch company, why? He came up with the concept of me o’clock. He uses this concept to emphasize self-worth in the face

of adversity; his watches are the motivational tool that serves as a constant reminder that it is always one’s time. Pretty cool huh? It isn’t easy to keep your determination to reach for your goals but it certainly helps to have a positive role model to keep you on the right track. For more motivation and encouragement, we strongly urge all our readers to check out his website at http://meoclock.com/ and enjoy some me time!

DR. CARTER G. WOODSON The Founder Of Black History Month

Dr. Carter G. Woodson created what is now known as Black History Month not just to add “The Negro” into history, but to rewrite what had been written of him. In his classic work, “The Mis-education of the Negro” Dr. Woodson details how in nearly every class and subject in school The Negro is portrayed as inferior, if portrayed at all. His special talents and gifts were never highlighted in a way that would make him feel equal as a member of a multicultural society. And, in most classes, it was taught that The Negro had contributed nothing of value to civilizations present or past. Dr. Woodson started Negro History week to infuse the Negro with a proper self-image and worldview that would make him desire to unify and become a constructive force in the development of his people.

r. Carter G. Woodson wanted Negro History week to inspire us to work together to make the Black Family at least equal to other cultures economically, socially, culturally, politically and in education. He was a living, prime example of that which he sought to achieve in all of us. Dr. Woodson was the Second African American to receive a PhD from Harvard University after receiving his Bachelors Degree from the University of Illinois and studying at Sorbonne University in France. He taught in High School and was a Principal for 5 years. He studied educational systems from America to Malaysia and went on to become the Supervisor of Schools in the Philippines for 3 years. He was the Dean of the Liberal Arts School at Howard University.

So here we are today in 2014, 88 years from the inception of Negro History Week. Can we say that the spirit of Dr. Carter G. Woodson still exists in Black History Month? Every February we are reminded of pretty much the same characters… Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, Malcolm X, Frederick Douglas and W.E.B. DuBois. People don their kente clothes and hold celebrations to recite speeches by these African American heroes. We buy a few trinkets, sing some songs and go home. Black History Month has become a month of semi-cultural events centered on corporate profit and keeping the African American mind docile.

And, with all his educational accomplishments, he still found time to write as a columnist for Marcus Garvey’s Negro World. He authored over 18 books and publications dealing with the Life and History of the Negro. He started the Association for the Study of Negro Life, which published the Journal of Negro Life. He started “Associated Publishing” the oldest African American book publishing company. And, he founded Negro History Week now know as Black History Month. He accomplished all of the above to instill in us a desire for unity. And, for all of us to become a constructive force in the development of Black people. WHEN YOU think of an entertainer several people may come to mind. However, if Whoopi Goldberg is not included on your list then you might want to rethink your definition of the word. Whoopi has found success on Broadway, in television and on the big screen while simultaneously entertaining every single audience using a combination of humor, grace and thoughtfulness.

WHOOPI

GOLDBERG ALWAYS LEAVE ‘EM LAUGHING

You just knew she was special when she decided to change her name from Caryn Elaine Johnson to Whoopi Goldberg because her given name was too boring. It was probably a good change since the one she has now is quite memorable. Although she was raised by a single mother in a housing project in the Chelsea area of Manhattan, she didn’t allow her humble beginnings to hold her back. She moved to California in 1974, seeking to start a career in show business. Success came to Whoopi when she won a Bay Area Theatre Award for portraying comedienne Moms Mabley in a one-woman show. Relocating to New York in 1983, she starred in the extremely popular The Spook Show, another one-woman OffBroadway production using her own comedy material to broach the race issue in America.

ALWAYS ONE TO look for a challenge, she sought to further her creative and artistic abilities by diving into the role of director. Having already portrayed Moms Mabley on Broadway she went on to direct the documentary Whoopi Goldberg Presents Moms Mabley along with the documentary Being Elmo about the voice (Kevin Clash) behind the popular Sesame Street character. Whoopi has had an extremely

long-lasting and successful career

in entertainment and she is still going strong. She is in rare company as one of only a few actresses who have won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony award. She is also an activist for AIDS, LGBT rights, Comic Relief for the homeless and is on the Board of Selectors of Jefferson Awards for Public Service. And yet with all that she does she still leaves us laughing.

ABRUZZO ITALY It’s Nothing But Drama

by: Serena Harris

Abruzzo is about the furthest point south you can go in Italy and find a good choice of places to ski from late November through April. Furthest south of all is the vast Cinque Miglia plateau, centered on the ski resort town of Roccaraso the largest on the entire Apennine chain.

FEBRUARY 2014/1966mag.com

LIFESTYLE

Further north, in the stunning Gran Sasso National Park, is the equally big Campo Imperatore. And roughly midway between those two, in the heart of the Majella National Park, are the two ski stations of Passo di Lanciano and La Majelletta. Both Passo di Lanciano and La Majelletta are thriving ski centers with La Majelletta supposedly unique in all of Europe as the only place you can ski - and see the sea as you do so! Even better, with the sea so close, there are a handful of prime days every April when you can ski in the morning; enjoy a leisurely lunch on the slopes; and then head down to the beach for a swim in the afternoon. The skiing at both Passso di Lanciano and La Majelletta is good, with a decent variety of black, red and blue runs and the slopes well served by a mix of chair and draglifts. You can also snowboard or go cross-country skiing. The two resorts are popular because they offer easy access from both Rome and Naples - as well as for Abruzzo skiers - and consequently can be jam-packed on weekends. But there’s one major problem - neither resort on its own can offer competitive skiers enough variety to keep them tested and involved for a week’s vacation. But surely they’re linked? No. They’re not. And that’s where the big problem lies. Because if you want to ski both places in a day, you have to buy two passes and get into your car and drive from A to B. Not surprisingly, visitors just don’t want to do that. So you’re forced into a choice. And that’s not ideal. Why then aren’t Passo do Lanciano and La Majelletta linked by runs and lifts and therefore able to offer some seriously good - and varied skiing? Long story. Ask ten different people and you’ll get ten different versions. But one factor is fairly constant: who pays for the infrastructure needed to turn two resorts into one? And equally importantly, how’s the income shared once this has all happened?

The answer is that the land on which the work would be needed is allegedly owned by no fewer than three people and they’ve been arguing for years about who should pay for what - and how much. And if they can’t decide that, there’s precious little likelihood of agreement being reached over who gets how much once everything’s up-and-running. Where did I hear this gossip? At the quirky, but excellent Bar dello Sci, a snowball’s throw from the bottom of the Passo di Lanciano chairlift. So if as many visitors to the area have found - when there’s still snow on the ground in the Majella, it’s pretty easy to treat yourself to a day’s skiing or snowboarding. You can hire whatever kit you need and whether you’re a beginner or an expert, you’ll find runs to suit your abilities. But what you won’t be able to do is ski Passo di Lanciano and La Majelletta on the same day because it’ll simply be too expensive and let’s be honest - too inconvenient. Somehow it’s all quintessentially Italian in that everybody knows about the problem. Everybody knows the solution. But nobody can do anything about it. Italy offers some of the world’s finest skiing in the Alps and the Dolomites. But did you know you also can ski much further south? In fact, there are excellent facilities within easy reach of Rome and Naples. One of my favorite is Villasfor2 in Abruzzo. What’s so special about this place? No crowds. No kids. Just three cool, relaxing Abruzzo villas exclusively for couples – and a sparkling salt-water pool – bordered by olive groves. The villas are perfectly placed between the mountains of the magnificent Majella National Park and the Adriatic Sea, with what a guest has called “the best views in Abruzzo”.

IF YOU DID SEND YOUR 1000TC, 1200TC, OR 1500TC FABRIC TO A LAB, YOU MIGHT BE SURPRISED BY THE RESULTS. WHAT YOU WOULD LEARN IS THAT:

• Thread size decreases as thread count increases.

UNRAVELING HIGH THREAD COUNT EGYPTIAN COTTON BED SHEETS

• Threads are twisted (like the cords of a rope) before weaving to achieve higher thread count.

HIGH THREAD COUNT Egyptian cotton

bed sheets are a very popular item in the luxury-bedding category. Fabric thread counts have spiraled to dizzying heights and now range from 180 to 1500. Traditional wisdom counsels that fabric increases in softness as thread count increases, so shoppers gravitate toward high numbers when making their final purchasing decision.

Westin Heavenly Bed

• Fiber length is more important in creating a luxurious hand than thread count.

However, the rules for determining quality fabrics have changed. You can no longer make an apple-to-apple comparison between two bed sheet sets based strictly on thread count numbers. Let’s unravel the mystery of high thread count fabric with a simple definition of thread count: number of threads per square inch of fabric. That’s simple enough. Cut out a square inch of fabric, count the number of threads and there you have your thread count. The only problem is that you need a microscope to actually see the tiny threads. In fact, the way professionals at textile mills get an accurate thread count (tc) are to have a sample of fabric analyzed at a lab - an expensive process.

• Twisted threads are referred to as “multi ply,” and are usually not as durable as single ply threads.

LIFESTYLE

BED SHEET FABRIC TERMINOLOGY Of course the average shopper does not have access to microscopes and textile labs, but can rely on basic education about how fabrics are made before making a bed sheet buying decision. It will help you to understand a few common fabric terms: • • • • •

Thread size Twisted thread Multi ply, 2 ply, 3 ply Single ply Staple fiber length

Let’s look a little closer now at each attribute. Thread size is fairly straightforward. It’s simply the diameter of the threads used to weave a fabric. Thread can be thin or thick, producing fabrics of different weights. But threads can also be twisted before weaving, as a way of producing thicker fabrics with a softer feel from thinner threads. A twisted thread is a combination of two or more threads that wrap around one another to form a single thread - kind of like a rope is made by wrapping several smaller ropes together to form one cord. A twisted thread is also referred to as a multi ply thread and can be 2 ply, 3 ply, or more. A multi ply thread is usually weaker than a single ply, not because the twisting makes them weaker, but because the fiber length is usually shorter than a high quality single ply thread. Staple fiber length refers to the length of the individual cotton fibers that make up a single thread. Longer fibers come from better cotton and make stronger, smoother fabrics.

Isabella Collection Shopping for Quality Bed Sheets Now that you are armed with some basic technical knowledge, how will that help you select quality bed sheets? First you know that single ply sheets are a pretty safe bet for quality. With single ply fabrics, higher thread count usually does indicate a more luxurious bed sheet fabric. Other factors that would affect fabric quality include the grade of the cotton used and the weaving process. What Should You Pay For High Thread Count Bed Sheets Many people extrapolate in a linear fashion when imagining how sheets will feel. They think, “If 500tc sheets are a really high thread count and they feel this good, 1500tc sheets must feel 3 times better!” In fact most people cannot tell the difference between 500tc sheets and 1500tc. The fabrics can feel very similar. Usually there is a bigger difference when you compare sheets from one company to another, regardless of thread count, than different thread count sheets from the same company. In other words a set of 300tc bed sheets from a company that uses high quality cotton and manufacturing processes will feel better than a 1000tc sheet set from a company that uses lower quality cotton and manufacturing.

EVEN THOUGH IT’S TEMPTING to compare bed sheets between two companies simply by the thread count number, the quality can differ widely. The old saying, “you get what you pay for,” definitely applies to shopping for bed sheets. Usually companies charge more because the quality of the cotton is so good or the manufacturing process is advanced. Fine Egyptian cotton bed sheets provide luxurious comfort that will last for many years, much longer than lower quality sheets. So, when it comes time to choose sheets for your bedroom, invest in a quality set from a clear-cut winner like MyLuxuryMattress.com. It is a specialty sleep shop featuring luxury Egyptian cotton bed sheets that will immerse you in luxury.

HOW TO USE WHISKEY

BALLS TO IMPROVE YOUR COCKTAILS

THERE IS NO RULE of thumb when

drinking whiskey, but there are a couple of points to keep in mind to make the encounter a great deal more satisfying. Whiskey balls are made from an ice ball mold and they keep whiskey and other cocktails stronger for longer. The concept behind round ice is that it does not melt as quickly as standard cubed ice. Never put a big volume of cubed ice in whiskey as it kills the taste and scent. Making use of a whiskey ball will prevent this. When acquiring an ice ball mold, it is recommended to use a silicone ice ball mold versus hard plastic. Dimension is another consideration. The most effective dimension for a whiskey ball is 2.5 inches. At 40-60 % alcohol, whiskey is definitely a sturdy spirit and will absolutely get the interest of the much less experienced in consuming it. Throwing in a dash of mineral water will soften the strike, so to speak, and calm its assertive nature. In addition, using a whiskey ball will keep the flavor of the whiskey much longer, without the watered down taste. The manufacturers of these great spirits recommend that you take a small mouthful and hold it in your mouth swish it around your tongue providing it time to settle. Only after that will you get the true nature of a great whiskey or scotch.

Finally on a closing note, after a swallow, it is stated that you can get a good read on the maturity of the whiskey or scotch by how long the taste stays in your mouth. Having a way to keep the flavor of your drink for longer will allow more time to savor your cocktail hence the reason for the invention of the whiskey ball.

Whiskey balls were originally used in high-end bars and bistros,

but are becoming a lot more popular for in home usage. The price and convenience of a silicone whiskey ball mold makes it well worth having around to add pleasure to your liquors. It is recommended to use a silicone 2.5-inch mold with a tight seal for the best results. One that has worked for me and is so easy to use is The Great Balls of Ice silicone whiskey ball mold. It offers superior features at an affordable price. You can get Great Balls of Ice mold at http://www.greatballsofice.com or search for Great Balls Of Ice at Amazon. FEBRUARY 2014/1966mag.com
