JUMPING FOR JOY
Costello Tagliapietra Show for FallWinter 2013 Collection
What is not to like about a great, fashion forward jumpsuit? Since the 1960s, jumpsuits have appeared from time to time in high fashion on countless catwalks around the globe. This trendy style is attractive to designers because it has an unbroken line running from the neck to the feet and can be flattering on body shapes. Designers Costello Tagliapietra and Rachel Zoe (Get The Look) both included the jumpsuit trend in their fall/winter collections.

Tika Sumpter is a model (has appeared in commercial ads for Liz Claiborne’s Curve fragrances), singer and actress who stars in the action-comedy “Ride Along” featuring Kevin Hart and Ice Cube. In the film, Tika is the female lead playing opposite Hart as his love interest. We dove through our fashion archives and found Sumpter looking absolutely radiant in a jumpsuit while attending The After Earth premiere. Tika you are definitely doing your thing girl! This season designers have put a serious emphasis on sophisticated and exclusive formal wear. To achieve the prim and proper look pair well-tailored jackets and feminine sheer buttondown blouses with skirts that extend down to the knee. As for shoes, anything that is considered “closed toe” is sure to bring the look to completion.

MODEL PROFILE Oluchi Ofoegbu What do you like to wear? I have a couple of favorites and it depends on the season or my mood, but I have noticed that sunglasses and watches are my favorites! I own about 20 pairs of sunglasses and they are all big faced. I own about 10 watches that are all bold faced as well, especially my Michael Kors. Why do you enjoy modeling? Professional dancers always amaze me with the way they use all parts of their body. It takes discipline and control. So then, I would say modeling is one of the avenues I am able to use all parts of my body and turn it into a work of art in order to express myself artistically.

HOUNDSTOOTH If you would like to invest in a garment that shall always be en vogue and considered classic, then look no farther than houndstooth fashions. Houndstooth is bold, despite its simplistic use of color (most commonly black and white). Therefore, be sure to keep accessories to a minimum to avoid any clashing or styling competition.

ACCESSORIES
In a world where couture reigns supreme, fashion garments took a backseat to accessories during the 2013-2014 winter season. Accessories such as handbags are usually just the cherry on top when it comes to showcasing a look. They make things look good, but they’re not the star. Throw that thinking right out your trend window because this season accessories have gone from the bridesmaid to the bride. Runways were full of models toting satchels as well as bejeweled clutches and handbags all stunningly striking. Therefore, go on and splurge on something super glitzy and let accessories reign. GET YOUR MAN RIGHT: BACRELLI NECKWEAR
This month we are bringing you a very special Get Your Man Right! When it comes to style and menswear it is the details that may appear to be diminutive that can really take an outfit up several chic notches. We recently had the opportunity to catch up with the gentleman behind the lavish, exclusive as well as sophisticated fashion accessory line known as, Bacrelli. Read on to get to know the brand, the man, the designer himself, Timothy Moore and how Bacrelli designs are taking the fashion world by storm. How would you describe the Bacrelli brand? I wanted to provide men the option to own affordable neckwear and accessories that were fashion forward without sacrificing quality and yet still easy on the wallet. Bacrelli is for today’s man, confident, elegant and definitely one who embraces individuality. Bacrelli helps any man face the sartorial challenges of expressing his own personal aesthetic with the greatest of ease by providing a plethora of options in colors textures and styles. Bacrelli never tries to be something it’s not. Bacrelli represents the man that knows who he is and what he wants. Every piece looks so luxurious, is it true that all Bacrelli designs are hand-made? To keep our ties affordable, Bacrelli employs a complex technique that requires both machine and hand work. Because of our commitment to excellence and our quest to provide men with a quality tie, we still demand that the finishing stitch used to secure the ties together be done by hand.
JANUARY 2014/1966mag.com
Please educate us on neckwear, what are the different types or styles? Neckties or as the French called them originally “Cravats” emerged on the scene of men’s fashion circa early 1600s. Over the centuries the Cravat has evolved into the modern day Tie. The styles spawned from the original Cravat included scarves, bandanas, bow ties, scarf/neckerchief, the ascot, the long tie. Many of these styles today still are integral cogs in the world of men’s fashion.
Who is the Bacrelli customer? Simply put, men and women who love fine Neckwear at affordable prices. My clientele ranges from the fashionista to fashion challenged. Age groups are from teens to seniors - all love my ties.
Whom or what inspired you to become a designer? Hands down I have to say my father. Dad was the type of man who always wore tailored made suits, wingtip shoes, shirts starched to perfection and, of course beautiful ties. Funny, recently, a few months ago, I caught him wearing alligator shoes at 86 years old! He just winked at me, and smiled. The rest is history.
JANUARY 2014/1966mag.com
With so much diversity, what is your favorite neckwear style to wear? Without any hesitation I would have to say the bow tie. Wearing a bow tie is the ultimate in sartorial expression of one’s personal style. I always say “It’s not a matter of can I wear one, the question is why not?” Interestingly, I find most men are apprehensive of the bow tie because of the army of grossly uninformed guys who wear them. When wearing a bow tie, the wearer should always give the tie character by allowing the tie to flow naturally. This prevents the wearer from looking too stiff and your bow tie from looking fake. The look achieved when done properly is a “natural elegance” that’s effortless. Many struggle to tie their tie properly, is there a simple way to do it? Well as with anything new or challenging practice is essential. Using the internet one can find many helpful threads and tutorials on this subject. I always recommend YouTube. How would you describe your own personal style? I’ve always been of the opinion that what you wear and how you wear it reveals one’s inner nature. With that being said my style is laid back with a penchant for the classics. I love color, but the hues must be the right tones. I love clothes that are functional and elegant. I’ve been known to step out on a limb from time to time, but it’s always classy and tasteful. Since I am comfortable with myself I am always comfortable with what I wear. You’ll never see me sweat.
We love the Bacrelli fashions that you design for women as well. What other accessories can women buy from the Bacrelli line? Starting the first of the year, we are working with a scarf maker, ALS Scarves and we will be providing jewelry and accessories for the woman with discriminating taste. Do you have any fashion or style advice for our readers dressing up for a night-out on the town? I know it sounds like a cliché, but less is more. It is always better to be noticed than to be seen. When you enter a room and the room becomes brighter because of the color of your ensemble and not the charisma of the man then you become memorable for all the wrong reasons. If you are not sure, DON’T DO IT! Lastly, where do you see the Bacrelli brand heading in the future? In order to stay relevant one needs to constantly reinvent one’s self and Bacrelli is not exempt from this fact. With the industry shifting its focus towards the luxury market, I look to develop Bacrelli by raising the bar and finding a niche in that realm, without alienating my core base of clients, yet attracting new and more progressive consumers at the same time. Because I prescribe to the concept of never putting limits on myself, my dreams and aspirations for Bacrelli are boundless. The sky is the limit! PHOTOGRAPHERS Married couples have long established and run successful family businesses. According to the Small Business Administration, one third of the fastest growing private companies are owned and operated by husband-and-wife teams. The benefits are innumerable for those couples that can work closely together and share a passion for their business. In addition to having the opportunity to spend more time together, they also tend to enjoy peace and harmony in their personal lives as well. No wonder Abel and Tanika (aka WinkNShoot) Hernandez are seeing such success with their photography business. Tanika has had an interest in photography since she was a child. That passion prompted her to attend a Modeling & Fashion institute in New York City to see a different side of the world of photography.

IN 2011
SHE PURSUED her dream of photography after undergoing health issues that left her unable to work. Instead of feeling sorry for herself and to ease the boredom of being at home, she used this opportunity to immerse herself in what she loved, photography.
Tanika’s husband Abel, born and raised in South Bronx, New York supported his wife by working as her assistant. He helped her with research and purchased her first DSLR camera Nikon D7000. It didn’t take him too long before he was bitten by the bug and embraced his newfound career of not only shooting behind the lens, but modeling too just like his wife.
To get a crash course and a better understanding of fashion photography this couple turned to friend and mentor Benjamin Briu (http:// benjaminbriu.com) who has been a true inspiration in the field of fashion photography. Wanting to control the type of work they featured they started a magazine called “Rough Lounge”. Their photo imagery brings to the table respect and modesty, which are often forgotten in the fashion world. Has their hard work and dedication to learning everything there is to know about photography paid off? Well... They have worked for fashion gurus such as Timothy Moore’s men’s line “Bacrelli”, the very talented women’s shoe Designer Jeff Johnson from “Charm City Sole”, Rinaldi B. Rose a.k.a RBR Styles, which is a women’s clothing and jewelry collection and ALS Scarves which is a collection of both men’s and women’s scarves.

Their ultimate goal as photographers is to provide people with an amazing experience along with the best images of themselves while bringing out their inner beauty. For you techies, Tanika is currently shooting with a Canon 5D Mark III. To see more of their work check out the Rough Lounge Magazine collection at:

SATIN
SATIN Satin Fun Fact: Satin is a fabric that has been weaved with a lustrous face yet dull backside due to a process known as floating. This process allows large portions of thread to reflect light, which makes the fabric shiny and glossy on one side. It is no wonder why designers would want to include such a delicate and intricate choice of fabric into their collections. The satin trend was showcased during shows for the Venexina collection by Kati Stern, Katya Leonovich, Constello Tagliapietra and Parkchoonmoo Collection by Parkchoonmoo. IS GOING NAKED Real Housewives of Atlanta (RHOA), Porsha Stewart, has a new hairline. Stewart, 31, is known for her beautiful flowing locks, so it is no surprise she has launched a line of hair extensions that are 100 percent unprocessed virgin Indian and Brazilian tresses. The hair comes in body wave, wavy, straight and curly.

CELEBRITY
According to Porsha, “I’ve found that the most beautiful women in the world are the ones that wear nothing but confidence. Women that go NAKED.” Wearing extensions provides long lasting hairstyles; it is a protective hair style for women that shields your hair from the elements; creates a new look without damaging their own hair and provides versatility so that they can wear numerous hairstyles. One thing is for sure, Porsha is not alone in the hair game. Wendy Williams, Elise Neal, Syleena Johnson and Vivica Fox all have hair and wig line businesses to help women boost their confidence level. Now more than ever, achieving celebrity caliber hairstyles is within your reach.
Clothing is optional... Hair is not! I’ve found that the most beautiful women in the world are the ones that wear nothing but confidence. Women that go ‘NAKED’. -Porsha Stewart
Nevertheless, although Porsha has recently gone through a divorce she has decided to keep herself busy and has truly blossomed as well as become stronger than ever. Stewart has revealed that she is working on a makeup line too! Nonetheless, before this busy entrepreneur got into the hair business, she was already selling a line of t-shirts and tank tops through Troy Solomon Apparel. TOP BEAUTY TIPS
New Year NEW YOU
BEAUTY LIST 1. Exercise regularly to improve blood circulation giving you fresh and beautiful skin. 2. UV rays can wreak havoc regardless of your skin color. Apply a sunscreen product that has SPF 15 formula to enjoy radiant and glowing skin. 3. Before applying a lick of makeup always use primer to make skin smooth. Doing so will help makeup adhere and keep your face looking matte instead of shiny. 4. Fix dry hair by performing hair oil massage to your scalp once or twice a week. 5. Drink at least 8 glasses of water to maintain proper hydration on the skin.
JANUARY 2014/1966mag.com
BEAUTY
BEAUTY LIST 6. When applying moisturizer never rub it into your face, instead pat it on. Rubbing will actually take the moisturizer off your skin dispersing it in different places. Patting it on helps the skin soak it up. 7. When wearing lip liner match it to the color or tint of the lipstick. 8. Volumizing mascara tends to be heavy and can actually take the curl out of your lashes. Get the most out of your volumizing mascara by applying a waterproof, lengthening formula first to hold the curl up then add a coat of volumizing mascara on top. 9. To achieve a more natural makeup look your blush and lip color should be in the same color family. 10. Just like heat, fragrance rises so spritz your perfume of choice on your ankles or behind your knees to help your scent last longer. 11. Shape your eyebrows to help make dark under eye circles less noticeable. Tweeze your eyebrows so that they’re straighter-across than arched. When eyebrows are arched you get a complete circle effect (your brows and the dark circles below) and that exaggerates the dark circles. However, if your brows are straight across, it breaks up that shape and puts less emphasis on the dark circles. 12. Look pulled together in less time when doing your makeup by focusing on your brows and lips. Fill in your eyebrows and brush them then apply a lip gloss.
JANUARY 2014/1966mag.com
BEAUTY LIST 13. Out of makeup remover? Use body lotion, yes regular lotion, to remove your makeup. This works especially well on tough mascara. 14. Get a close and safe shave even when out of shaving cream by lathering your legs with conditioner instead of soap. Hair conditioner will soften the hair on your legs making it easier to shave. 15. Leave your eyeliner in the freezer for 15 minutes prior to applying your makeup. It should glide along your lash line seamlessly after the freezing process. 16. For curlier, flirtier lashes, heat your eyelash curler with a hair dryer for five to eight seconds before curling lashes. 17. Before applying nail polish, wipe nails with an acetone-based cleanser. Cleaning excess dirt, oil or moisturizer from your nails will ensure that nail polish adheres properly. 18. If you have oily skin, then use blotting papers to soak up excess oil. 19. Curl your eyelashes both before and after applying mascara for longer lashes. 20. Dry, flaky, chapped lips are the worst canvas for lipstick. Use a toothbrush or clean mascara wand to gently scrub your lips.

KEEPING
THOSE EDGES HERE ARE SOME HAIRSTYLES THAT CAN POTENTIALLY CAUSE THE LOSS OF EDGES: INDIVIDUAL BRAIDS AND TWISTS - most people have less hair at the front hairline so adding too much braiding hair will create heaviness. CORNROWS - if too much hair is added at the start of the braid, or if you have short edges and it is being stretched to fit in a braid. SEW-IN EXTENSIONS (WEAVES) - tight cornrows, pulling when sewing and too much heat to blend natural hair to extensions. LOCS - as they mature can become too heavy
by: DeAndra Giselle
PONYTAILS - wearing the same tightly pulled ponytail for years RELAXERS - over processing or only relaxing the edges WIGS - misuse of glue for lace front or always placing the wig combs in the same area
There are many reasons why and how African- American women lose their edges and front hairline. Besides illness and dietary issues, most of edge hair loss is from hairstyles and lack of caring for your hairline. The truth of the matter is we really don’t pay attention to our edges until it’s too late. JANUARY 2014/1966mag.com
HAIR
ALL THESE HAIRSTYLES
are major contributors to the lack of edges in African American women. There are some signs prior to complete hair loss that can prevent the baldness. 1. If you feel a really uncontrollable pain during any service, let your hairstylist know because chances are the pain will only get worse. 2. Those tiny bumps that look like pimples are actually hair being pulled from the follicle. If those occur, immediately take the style down. 3. The hairs you see poking out of a style with little clear looking balls on the ends are your hair follicles. Too many times of hair being pulled from follicle will cause permanent hair loss damage. These styles do not have to be damaging but be aware that if something feels uncomfortable you should alter the style so you can be comfortable. Some styles may require your edges to be left out to relieve stress or use less hair while braiding or twisting. Not all edges are created equal so what one person can handle is not necessarily right for your hair. To figure out what will work does require trial and error but knowing and addressing the signs will help you keep your edges at your front hairline.

MELLODY HOBSON
Sometimes it seems overwhelming just trying to balance our checkbooks or stay on a budget that has been revised for about the 100th time. If you think that is hard work, just try managing over $7 billion in assets for one of the largest African-American owned money management firms in the United States. If your name is Mellody Hobson, then that is precisely what you are doing. On her way to becoming a financial guru, Hobson took the time to attend Princeton University from where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1991. She jumped right into the world of finance by becoming an intern at Ariel Investments, LLC, the aforementioned African-American money management firm. It was plain to see her potential as she rocketed up the organization chart becoming the senior vice president and director of marketing for the firm. By 2000, she had ascended to the presidency of Ariel and subsequently became responsible for the management of over $7 billion in assets. That Hobson would eventually become a well-known financial wizard was evidenced by the recognition she received from several prominent magazines. She was listed among Ebony magazine’s “20 Leaders of the Future” in 1992, Esquire’s “America’s Best and Brightest” in 2002 and
The Wall Street Journal’s 50 “Women to Watch” in 2004. They were all proved correct as Mellody went onto secure the presidency of Ariel Investments, but is also the chairman of the board for Dreamworks Animation SKG, Inc. In addition to these weighty responsibilities, she is a director of The Estée Lauder Companies Inc., Groupon, Inc., and Starbucks Corporation. In 2006, Mellody began dating film director and producer George Lucas (creator of the Star Wars franchise, in case you have been living on another planet). The couple was married on June 22, 2013 and together they have a daughter, Everest Hobson Lucas who was born in August 2013. Recently, the couple donated $25 million to the Maggie Daley after school group which provides high quality after school programs to teens in the Chicago, Illinois area. She also serves as a board member of the Lucas Cultural Arts Museum and The Chicago Public Education Fund. Clearly giving sound financial advice as well as giving of herself are hallmarks of Mellody and worthy of imitation. Building a solid financial foundation is critically important to every individual no matter their skin color or ethnicity. Do yourself a favor and get on the road to financial planning by checking out some of Mellody’s tips here: http://www.arielinvestments.com/mellodys-video-tips/. JANUARY 2014/1966mag.com

CHRIS PAUL NICE GUYS FINISH FIRST
FOCUS
He may be a five time NBA AllStar and president of the National Basketball Players Association, but that’s not what makes Chris Paul a superstar. Take a look at his State Farm Insurance commercial and you will see the portrait of a truly nice guy. Even his lovely wife Jada affectionately calls him a nerd. He may be a well-known athlete but he is not the stereotypical dumb jock with an ego the size of Texas. It is quite the opposite; the people who know him best would describe him as humble and down to earth. His upbringing most likely has a great deal to do with Chris’ guy next door, mild-mannered persona. He was born in North Carolina to Charles and Robin Paul in 1985. His parents, who were both childhood friends and members of Dreamland Park Baptist church, provided a warm and loving family atmosphere for Chris and his older brother C.J. Their father, who had been an athlete himself, taught his sons how to play basketball and football and coached them in various youth events all through their childhood. No doubt, this precious time spent with their father taught the boys strong family values. Besides the loving support of his parents, Chris also had a great relationship with his maternal grandfather Nathanial Jones whose nickname was Papa Chili. Papa was well known throughout the community as he was the first
African-American to operate a Chevron service station in North Carolina, which opened in 1964 during the height of the civil rights movement. In the summertime, both the Paul brothers could be found operating the cash register, rotating tires and changing air filters at the station. Chris was so close to his grandfather that he referred to him as his best friend and as the one from whom he learned many of life’s lessons. Tragically, his grandfather was robbed and beaten by teenagers as he unloaded groceries from his car. He died from cardiac arrhythmia in his own carport. The death of his grandfather left Chris devastated, but he was determined to live his life in a way that would make Papa Chili proud. One way he has lived up to his grandfather’s legacy is by the work he has done in the community. As the head of his CP3 Foundation, he has participated in many celebrity and youth bowling events which benefits programs in Louisiana affected by Hurricane Katrina. The foundation also benefits charities in Winston-Salem. Chris has donated both his money and his time to several organizations such as Feed the Children, the Special Olympics of North Carolina, Make-A-Wish Foundation, Meals on Wheels and Habitat for Humanity. When he’s not ripping it up on the basketball court, Chris is spending his time perfecting his role as a husband, father and man of the people. Now that’s what we call ballin’.

POSEIDON A MAGICAL UNDERSEA RESORT
JANUARY 2014/1966mag.com
LIFESTYLE
A standard 550 sq. foot suite (nothing included) can be had for about $1500 a night. But why stop there when you can reserve the whole of Poseidon Mystery Island for a mere $3,000,000?
There is something magical, mystical and uniquely captivating about the prospect of living under the sea. So many of us as youngsters immersed ourselves in the books of Jules Verne or sat, wide-eyed and mesmerized, as we watched Disney’s 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Well you no longer have to dream as you can visit the underwater hotel Poseidon of Fiji - aptly named after the Greek God of the Sea, Poseidon. This resort sits 40 feet underwater and guests have their very own personal Triton submarine at their disposal for exploring within the lagoon. In addition, the hotel has two units that are accessed via elevators. One of the units accommodates 24 suits, a restaurant and a bar. The other unit features a library, spa, a conference room, theater area and an undersea wedding chapel. That’s right! You read that correctly. Imagine an underwater Wedding Day! Yes, it will be a wedding ceremony or vow renewal truly unlike any other. This splendid space offers an enchanting environment made all the more interesting with its ever-changing backdrop: a transparent wall overlooking a coral garden.
You can see everything from your room through transparent acrylic walls and you can even feed fish swimming by. Many visitors primarily enjoy the solitude and colorfulness of the marine life. There is also a land complex with 26 over water bungalows and 24 beach ones, along with the VIP presidential suite. Underwater suites feature large windows that allow you to fully enjoy the lovely depths of the sea without getting wet. Poseidon undersea resort also includes a fitness center, pools and courtyards for the beach bungalows, six bars and five restaurants in total, two swimming pools, tennis courts, a dive shop and a golf course. Back to the price – there is required minimum stays that will set you back $30,000 a week. This is the least amount of money you will need to spend for a spectacular vacation that includes air transportation on the resort’s airplanes, four nights in beach bungalows, two more in underwater suites, a trip in a submarine expedition outside the borders of the lagoon and the unique chance to pilot a personal submarine yourself. So, do you think it’s worth it? Poseidon is the world’s first significant, permanent and habitable one-atmosphere sea-floor structure. To me, this is absolutely the most surprising aspect of the Poseidon project — the fact that nothing like it has ever been done before.

Get Fit For Summer
WELCOME TO 2014! It is a new year and there are exactly 6 months till summer; plenty of time to lose weight and tone up for sunnier days. Countdown with us and get fit and healthier than ever before!
Walk It Out Workout Slim down all over with this simple workout that gives you the opportunity to daily challenge yourself. Walking is an amazing exercise that is easy on the joints and can boost energy, lift your mood and most importantly burn fat as well as tone you all over. So then, walk it out in order to work out to the body of your dreams. Begin by warming up for 5 minutes by walking at a moderate pace, then walk as fast as you can for 10 minutes. Remember to take note how far you went (using a pedometer may make this step easier). Next, turn around and walk back to where you began at a brisk pace, only slowing your speed to cool down as you get closer to your starting point. Every day that you do this workout, aim to walk faster and go farther than your initial turnaround point.
Thin In Ten Workouts Short on time? Get a fast and effective workout in only ten minutes! Fitness researchers have found that short circuit workouts can still achieve full benefits. In fact, research has shown that even a short blast of intense exercise can boost metabolism for the entire day more effectively than a workout that’s slow and steady. All you will need is to use your own body weight and a chair. Perform

KICK UP THE CARDIO Do you find yourself short of breath walking up a flight of stairs? Are you breathing heavy when you have to walk from a car parking lot to the entrance of a building? Does contemplating the idea of walking or jogging, even for a short distance, make you break out in a sweat? Well ladies, if you answered yes to any of these questions, then it is time to kick your cardio exercise into a higher gear.
The thought of getting our heart rates up may not be appealing but it is absolutely necessary. Think about it: most likely you are sitting at a desk, staring at a computer for eight or more hours a day for at least five days a week. By the end of the work day your back hurts, your neck aches, your eyes are tired and you pretty much feel like someone has beaten you with a baseball bat for no particular reason. What we are trying to say is that our sedentary lifestyle is not conducive to good health. Therefore, we need to do cardio exercises that can help restore our body’s vigor and energy. Why is cardio exercise so important? It helps improve the efficiency of our cardiovascular system by increasing the blood flow to our hearts and strengthening the heart and lungs. Cardio also helps to get your weight under control while at the same time getting your stress down to an acceptable level. In addition to these benefits cardio reduces the risks of heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and some types of cancer. Besides the health benefits, doing cardio just makes you feel better about yourself.
There are numerous exercises to choose from, the main idea is to keep up some type of continuous movement. It is also important, before your workout, to do a warm up of light cardio to gradually get your heart rate up and at the end of the workout to do a cool down of light cardio to bring your heart rate back down. Here are some exercise suggestions for your workout: • Walking • Stair Climber • Elliptical • Swimming • Cycling • Aerobics • Rowing
As a reward you can have a glass of chocolate milk for your efforts. It is the perfect recovery drink after a cardio workout. Look at that you exercised and then you gave your bones some calcium afterward. Now that’s the way to treat your body as a temple!

Nevertheless, if your home has an open plan living room, dining area and kitchen and there is a breakfast bar dividing the areas, they often have overhangs to extend the surface area. This is just another reason why 30-inch stools are very convenient as, most people have around 8-12 inches of thigh on both legs that has to fit in between the bar stool seat and the bottom of the overhang. So then, to ensure your home decor is comfortable for not only your family, but also invited guests, purchasing a 30-inch stool is the right choice for a snug fit that doesn’t feel too cramped. When dining at a restaurant or bar you may have noticed a few special tables for those customers who wish to eat and drink at the bar. These tabletops are always higher than regular restaurant tables, so they require bar stools or tall chairs. These tables run along the same principals as kitchen counters regarding height and space to move your legs. Therefore, when your bar stools are the right height, your comfort level will be perfect. When shopping, keep in mind that bar stools are available in numerous shapes, sizes and styles; however, the standard bar stool height is 30 inches. Unless you are either very tall or very short, having a 30-inch bar stool is about the most comfortable stool you can use. Moreover, in lieu of comfort, most bar stools have a foot rail about halfway between the seat and the floor.
The purpose of the foot rail is to give the person seated on the stool a place to rest their feet and take the pressure off the back of the legs. It is simply a case of being able to sit for prolonged periods of time and not feel too fatigued when you stand up. You know the feeling when you sit too long and your legs all of a sudden feel like they are falling asleep? Not good, but this size of bar stool works well for those who have a standard leg span. Another reason why the 30-inch bar stool is the standard for all stool heights is to match the manufacturing standards required for home kitchen counters. Kitchen counters tend to be around 40 to 45 inches, so having a 30-inch bar stool would fit in perfect with the structure of your countertop while enjoying a bite to eat or having a chat with a friend over coffee.

BE THE

HOST
BY SELECTING THE PERFECT WINE
JANUARY 2014/1966mag.com

There are no set formulas for choosing the right wine for that special meal, event or person. In fact people have their own partialities when it comes to wine preferences. We have listed a few suggestions below to help you pick the right wine for the right moment or special meal. We hope it gives you some helpful insights to serving wines that should please any palate.
WHITES The Whites: When your guests first arrive and are enjoying the appetizers a white wine is always the perfect choice. They are commonly lighter and drier and leave the palate fresh for the main entree. Some of the whites such as the Chardonnay can also be introduced during a rich dinner such as “Coq au Vin”, with its beautiful creamy wine sauce. Another suggestion is the Sauvignon Blanc that is excellent served with a first course salad or shrimp cocktail or even a plate of delicate fish. When toasting that special event in your life or the life of a loved one the whites are a perfect choice. The more common toasting wine for weddings and anniversaries is of course the more elegant choice of Champagne.
REDS The Reds: Now you are ready to serve that special dish you have worked on all day, but it is important that you must choose the right wine. This is when you go for the full-bodied red. One of the most popular is a Merlot. Being a lighter red but still fullbodied it is perfect for sautéed chicken, grilled pork or roasted lamb. The Pinot Noir, while not as commonly served as a Merlot or Cabernet, is a unique blend of plum, vanilla and blackberry. Oregon produces Pinot Noir where the blackberries grow wild and are sweet and juicy. This wine will certainly be a hit. When hosting a spicy Mexican meal the Shiraz is a perfect compliment with its peppery flavor that brings out the spiciness of your enchilada or chili verde. Italian food with its hearty and robust tomato sauces requires Chianti. Chianti can range in price and quality. You may be able to find one that is rather inexpensive but the quality is perfect for you. A robust Burgundy would be the red to choose for a fine standing rib roast or delicate filet mignon.
As you can see from the suggestions above you may wish to have both a white wine and a red wine on hand when hosting a dinner. Some guests will most likely pick the wine they prefer and stay with that choice for the entire evening. Another may choose a white for the start of the evening and finish with a red. So always be prepared. If you are a true wine connoisseur, you may want to experiment with your own creations. Producing your own wine at home can be quite rewarding. You can make a variety of fruit wines that would actually be a great addition with most desserts. No matter which wine you choose, if you follow these tips you
will surely be the perfect host! JANUARY 2014/1966mag.com
