Issue 7– December 2013 Changes at the Top 1982 (Huyton) Squadron is bidding farewell to their Commanding Officer of 9 years, Flight Lieutenant Sarah Vose RAFVR(T), as she moves upward to take on the role of Merseyside Wing BTEC Officer. Sarah, A former Cadet Warrant Officer and Squadron Officer of 273 (Wallasey) Squadron, transferred to 1982 (Huyton) Squadron in June 2004 and was appointed Officer Commanding in September 2004. During her time at Huyton Sarah has gained many qualifications, including her Basic Expedition Leaders Award, First Aid at Work, became a Range Conducting Officer, allowing her to take cadets target shooting on the .22 rifle and is due to be awarded her Cadet Forces Medal for 12 years reckonable service. Sarah commented “It has been a privilege to work with all of the young people and adult volunteers who have been members of 1982 (Huyton) Squadron during the past 9 years. We have all benefited from the unique opportunities and experiences that the Air Cadet Organisation has to offer, gaining new skills, qualifications and friendships that will last a lifetime.” Flying Officer Neil Osborne will take over the reins as Officer Commanding 1982 (Huyton) Squadron; he had this to say “It is an absolute honour to take over as the new Officer Commanding of 1982 (Huyton) Squadron. I look forward to continuing the hard work that Flight Lieutenant Sarah Vose has carried over the past 9 years, ensuring 1982 (Huyton) Squadron is one of the top squadrons in Merseyside Wing.”

Issue 7– December 2013 Christmas Message from the Officer in Charge This time last year I found myself as the Squadron Adjutant, now I find myself writing these words as the new OC. Having only been in command for a few months I already realise what amazing Cadets, Staff and Civilian Committee we have at 1982 (Huyton) Squadron.
It has been an incredibly busy year and there have been some significant highs as well as saying goodbye to Flt Lt Sarah Vose who after 9 great years at the squadron moves onto pastures new within Merseyside Wing, of which I am sure she will do a brilliant job and I look forward to welcoming her back to the squadron in the future. We also say good bye to those cadets who have moved on, I wish you all the best for your new adventures in 2014, in particular good luck to Corporal Jack Paterson as he embarks on his career in the Royal Air Force.
Turning to more positive memories of 2013, I could write pages and pages about the many achievements the cadets of 1982 have enjoyed. If I named some events and not others, I would be bound to upset someone! Instead, I will simply say that I am incredibly grateful to everyone who has worked so hard this year to ensure that 1982 (Huyton) Squadron remains one of the premier squadron's in Merseyside Wing and the Air Cadet Organisation as a whole.
We move forward to 2014, the plan is to grow the squadron gradually; expanding our numbers and putting together a training program that will enable our cadets and staff to achieve even more, while at the same time pushing the squadron to new heights. We will continue to work closely with our Civilian Committee and raise further funds in 2014, so that we can continue to support our cadets and staff with courses, camps and activities that will better them as individuals and strengthen us as a team.

Issue 7– December 2013 Cadets Visit Liverpool Tower Recently, cadets from 1982 (Huyton) Squadron RAF Air Cadets got to witness the work of the Air Traffic Controllers at Liverpool John Lennon Airport after they were invited along to Liverpool Tower. The cadet’s tour began with the Approach Controllers in the downstairs control room, where they were shown the equipment used and even got shown, step by step, the process of guiding an aircraft in to land. They were then given an idea of the training and qualifications required to be an air traffic controller and the different career paths available to them in both military and civilian life. The cadet’s then made their way up to the top of the tower where they got to look out over the aerodrome and gain insight into the roles of the Ground and Runway Controller while at the same time reinforcing learning objectives they had recently covered while working towards their BTEC Aviation Studies. Corporal Aiden Jackson (14yrs) commented; “It’s amazing to see what goes on behind the scenes in Air Traffic Control, when you go on holiday you never get to see the work that goes into getting you off the ground and to your destination!” Huyton Squadron Air Cadets covers part of the South Liverpool area and offers a host of opportunities to local youngsters aged 13 and over. Issue 7– December 2013 Awards Night 2013 Thursday 19th December saw the most anticipated event in 1982 (Huyton) Squadron’s Calendar, the squadron’s annual awards evening. This year as per previous years the presentation was held at St Gabriel’s Church in Huyton, with kind permission of Reverend Cannon Malcolm Rogers, Squadron Padre. The evening began with the enrolment of our newest cadets and presentation of their cadet log books and First Class Cadet Classification badges, which are awarded to the cadets following completion of their basic training. This was followed by the presentation of certificates to all cadets in attendance, acknowledging their personal achievements over the past year, before a short video, highlighting the events and achievements of the past year was presented to the guests. After a short comfort break the cadets and guests were all seated for the most awaited part of the evening, the presentation of trophies and awards. Each trophy, award and potential nominees for these were thoroughly deliberated between the staff; this proved to be very challenging as each award was hotly contested by all the cadets. The first award up for grabs was The RAFA Aero Modelling Shield which is awarded to the cadet who has shown the most promise in the field of Aero Modelling over the past year; this year, for the second year running, the award went to Corporal Karl Rio. The Civilian Committee Award was up next, this year it was awarded to the cadet who has been the most committed and enthusiastic toward the fund raising efforts of the squadron, turning up to all of the fundraising events and putting ideas forward for future events, this year the awards went to Sergeant Aron Stott.

Issue 7– December 2013 The Jock Coates Memorial Trophy is awarded to the cadet who has collected the most for the Royal Air Force Association Wings Appeal throughout the year, this year the trophy was awarded to Corporal Karl Rio. The Royal British Legion Trophy is awarded to the cadet who has given outstanding service to the RBL Poppy Appeal of the past year, this year it was awarded to Cadet Aiden Jackson. The Frank Peakin Award for Shooting was awarded to the Clay Pigeon Team, consisting of Sergeant Jack Lynch, Sergeant Declan Knowles, Corporal Karl Rio and Cadet Ryan Lynch who this year won the Merseyside Wing Inter Squadron Clay Shooting Trophy. The M.R.S. Trophy for Sports Cadet of the Year was awarded to Cadet Poppy Hearn, who this year has continued her interest and enthusiasm for sport, representing both the squadron and Merseyside Wing on several occasions in various sporting competitions. The Warrant Officer’s Award for Discipline is awarded by the Squadron Warrant Officer to the cadet who over the past year has been beyond reproach in all that they have done, this year the Warrant Officer’s Award for Discipline went to Cadet Reece Riozzi. The Michael Trophy for Service and Commitment was awarded to Corporal Karl Rio for his dedication to the squadron during a period of illness, never missing a parade night and always setting an example to others. The McQueen Shield, which is awarded to the flight with the best results in the Inter-Flight Competition, was this year awarded to A Flight having scored 1344 points in the Inter-Flight Competition. The Rotary Club Trophy for Best Recruit this year went to Cadet Sam Moore for all the hard work, enthusiasm and determination he has put into the squadron over 2013, since joining in February, Sam has attended Annual Camp at RAF Shawbury, Adventure Training Camp at Nesscliff and Recruit & Junior NCO Training Weekend’s at RAF Shawbury to name but a few!

Issue 7– December 2013 The President’s Trophy for Runner up Best Cadet was this year awarded to two cadets who had equally shown a keen willingness to take part in all that the squadron has to offer, this year the award when to Cadet Lauren Wilkinson and Cadet Poppy Hearn. The Prescott Memorial Trophy for Best NCO is awarded to the Cadet Non-Commissioned Officer who has shown diligence in their duties and has set a high standard in Drill, Dress and Discipline, for which other cadets can aspire toward, this year the award went to Sergeant Aron Stott. The final and most coveted award to be given out during the evening was the Best Overall Cadet Shield; this is awarded to the cadet who has impressed the staff with their commitment and determination during the previous year, this was awarded to a cadet who, along with their keen attitude to all that the Air Cadet Organisation has to offer, attended a vast selection of activities ranging from sporting competitions and fund raising events to camps and courses, for that reason the Cadet of the Year for 2014 is Cadet Stephanie Campbell. Following the award presentations Officer in Charge 1982 (Huyton) Squadron, Flying Officer Neil Osborne announced some well-deserved promotions, these included promotion to the rank of Corporal for Cadet’s Aiden Jackson, Abagael Vose and Aiden Wileman, promotion to the rank of Sergeant for Corporal Karl Rio and promotion to the rank of Flight Sergeant for Sergeant Aron Stott. The evening was then brought to a close with the presentation of gifts and a squadron plaque to the outgoing Officer Commanding, Flight Lieutenant Sarah Vose. Flying Officer Neil Osborne commented on the evening’s proceedings, “What an excellent evening to showcase what 1982 (Huyton) Squadron has to offer, it was great to see so many certificates and trophies being given out! It was also a very special evening to make a presentation to our former Officer Commanding, Flight Lieutenant Sarah Vose, who was our guest for the evening.”
