PATRICK McMAHON ‘COLOURSCAPES’ ARTIST STATEMENT Colourscapes – an exploration of colour with Patrick McMahon. This body of work is a continuation of a theme I have been working on for a long time – Colour and Movement. Inspired by the colours and patterns of nature, from the sparkling opals to the dazzling corals to the geographical shapes in the landscape, my works invite the eye to be entertained by colour. I start with the background of the painting, painting over it to achieve a balance and then again, transforming it completely with each layer. After a certain point, it seems to paint itself. I never know exactly what it will be like until the last strokes are done – it is like a colour puzzle I put together. I push the colours and create shapes that play against each other – a kaleidoscope of hues. Sometimes I paint to a colour plan, other times changing it to no rules, whatever looks balanced. There is no up or down, no particular way a painting has to be hung, that is up to the viewer to decide what appeals to them. These ‘Colourscapes’ are a colour journey from pale pastels to screaming neons, entertaining the eye of the viewer and taking them on a journey but ultimately letting them decide what they see.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Gold Coast based artist Patrick McMahon’s painting is neither steeped in issue, nor deconstructed by aid of a computer application. It does not need screeds of information to validate it. Unapologetically, his work is about feelings and is borne from decades of hard labour, life experience and learning about what nature and paint do (when they meet each other). His catch cry in the 80’s was, ‘Colour and Movement!’, and explains as much about his personality and his intuitive art practise, as his relationship to ‘nature’. SELECTED EXHIBITIONS

HELEN HOLMES ‘KNOCK KNOCK’ WHO’S THERE? ARTIST STATEMENT ‘Knock Knock’ Who’s there? A Shakespeare quote from Macbeth, wondering who is it that approaches. This quote summarizes the unexpected meeting or connection with others. I have witnessed and played out roles moving into peoples lives. Over time, as we get to know each other, our roles change depending on the individuals needs or wants. I believe my humanism to be true, present and faithful not only to myself but others. I’m hoping each piece transcends this honesty of emotive truth or connection. So, just like Shakespeare revealing everyday truths in his plays, I wanted to relate or connect. I have found quotes that speak some similar truths and hopefully adds a Shakespearean depth to each piece
ABOUT THE ARTIST Originally from the Central Coast, NSW, Helen Holmes is a contemporary abstract artist who has called the Gold Coast home for over 20 years. Helen is a vehicle spray painter by trade. As result, her love of colour was enhanced by the many hours spent mixing paints and colour matching, and has carried itself over to her artwork. Her paintings are vibrant acrylics and charcoal on board or canvas. Her work is sassy and fun with lots of energy. Helen was recently awarded first prize at The Trinity Lutheran College Annual Art and Craft Awards

LEISA RUSSELL ‘PIPEDREAM’
ABOUT THE ARTIST Leisa’s passion for sculpting began during early childhood when she started sculpting with clay and the objects she found in the bush around her home. Growing up on a rural property in the Gold Coast Hinterland, Leisa developed a strong affinity with and appreciation for both nature and animals. This is evident in some of her most recent works which reflect the strong energy and presence of natural found objects. Essentially a self-taught artist, Leisa’s work showcases a broad skills base and her versatility in the use of a wide variety of mediums including bronze, clay, resin, silver, wood, forged steel and concrete. Her work ranges in scale from small table top pieces to life size works. She displays an unwavering insistence on maintaining the integrity of the process and the materials used in developing her pieces.

DAN WITHEY ‘THE DAY THE WORLD WAS OK’ ARTIST STATEMENT The day the world was ok The more we know the more we realise that we don’t know as much as we thought Does every generation believe that they’re living in the end times? Is the world ok? Will the world ever get better? Are we sticking our heads in the sand? ABOUT THE ARTIST Born in Birmingham England in 1986, Dan Withey immigrated to Australia with his parents in 2004. Withey studied a Bachelor of Visual Communication (specialising in illustration) at the University of South Australia. Withey became a professional visual artist in 2007 soon after he graduated as the Student of the Year from the Design Institute of Australia. His work draws from his background in illustration and design. Humour and ungraded emotion pop out of his works. His works often depict a clear lightness. However, this lightness does not mean that each of his works is themed around light emotions - other darker emotions are often present, creating a complexity that carries through to the viewer.
