IN A MARRIAGE MADE IN SREETWEAR HEAVEN, TOPSHOP AND ADIDAS ORIGINALS HAVE BANDED TOGETHER IN AN EXCLUSIVE COLLABORATION TO CREATE A SUPER-COOL RANGE OF STREET-SEXY ON-THEMONEY PIECES. Heralded by Topshop’s creative director Kate Phelan as being “a celebration of the greatness of fashion and sportswear”, it’s the soft element to this sporty collection that promises a “function to your fashion”. The collection also ventures into bold, urban prints and through a “reworking” of classic Adidas cuts and shapes, makes them more unique with that distinctive Topshop appeal. The monochrome, coral and generally soft colour palette within the collection serves up a fresh offering from two of the worlds leaders in street wear. 1AM shot new face Georgia Borthwick on the streets of Sydney sporting one of our favourite pieces in the collection, the All-In-One. Adidas Originals x Topshop is available now at Adidas Originals stores, online at www.adidas. com.au and selected Topshop stores.

WITH THE RISE in popularity of fashion frames now deemed uber chic, like their cool cousins sunglasses, top international designer brand opticals have become big business. Challenging the big guns, a few local boutique eyewear brands are enjoying success, carving out a competitive niche in the market. Like Bondi based BAILEY NELSON, founded in 2012 by Nick Perry, Peter Winkle and Scott Triana in reaction to the overpriced eyewear industry of Australia, designing their frames in-house and hand-selecting the best materials from across the globe means they have been able to retail their high-quality stylish specs for under $100 dollars - prescription lenses included. With stores already established in Bondi, Melbourne and Queensland and an expanded retail presence planned throughout Australia this year with the opening of more boutiques, concept stores and full service flagship stores offering bulk billed eye exams, you can’t say their vision is anything but clearly focused. Check out the full range of Bailey Nelson opticals and sunglasses either in store or online at baileynelson.com.au

1AM JESSE WILLESEE

> 1ST UP SEX, DRUGS & ART

CONTOVERSIAL SYDNEY ARTIST JESSE WILLESEE CHATS TO 1AM ABOUT HIS SEXY INTERACTIVE PHOTO-SHOOTS, HOW MUCH HE SPENDS ON WEED EVERY WEEK AND WHY MILEY CYRUS IS ONE OF THE GREATEST ARTISTS ALIVE! PHOTOGRAPHED EXCLUSIVELY FOR 1AM BY JACK MANNIX. MODELS KEELY STARR & NAHAL DONYADIDEH MAKEUP & HAIR BEANIE EVA ALDRETT FLEMMING SHOT AT THE WESTIN HOTEL MARTIN PLACE SYDNEY JESSE WILLESEE is on a mission. As well as staging interactive photo shoots, installations, photographic exhibitions and occasional out of control hotel parties over the past two years, Jesse has been developing “Tabloid Art” – a series of viral, online exhibitions featuring “ripped-fromthe-headlines” themes. The mantra of Tabloid Art, he says, is that how successful the work is depends on how much media attention surrounds it. By that token, his recent protest Marijuana is Not a Crime, which saw him smoke weed outside six Sydney police stations with a photographer in tow, was a great success. It landed front page of the Telegraph online, saw him grilled on talk-back radio and appear on The Project. 1AM: What was experiencing the media storm around Marijuana is Not a Crime like? JW: It was fucking crazy. My parents were calling me because they had been getting calls from friends and relatives who they hadn’t seen in years. I woke up and before I could brush my teeth I was defending my actions on 2UE breakfast radio. People were stopping me in the street and at the gym. That artwork’s whole purpose was to make the mainstream news. My quotes, my words, my beliefs on marijuana were coming out of newsreader’s mouths. If it hadn’t have done that, it would have been a failed exercise. 1AM: Explain Tabloid Art. What is it? JW: I “compress relevant news items into small scope, often featuring stories of sex, drugs, crime, or scandal presented in a sensational manner” – it’s dictionary-definition tabloid journalism, except I do it as an artist. 1AM: Who are the most relevant artists in the world at the moment? JW: Besides me? (Laughs). Probably, number one James Franco, number two Kanye West, number

three Miley Cyrus, number four Macauley Culkin, number five Banksy. Yeah it’s an interesting time. 1AM: Why Miley Cyrus? JW: If the most modern form of art is attention then Miley Cyrus is winning. She had her own fame to subvert, and a great subject to explore in society’s fear of young women and sexuality. The ignorance and hate directed at her just for shaking her booty! Let’s you know that society still has some serious hang-ups when it comes to their girls. So if she scares you, then start freaking the fuck out because she is like a wholesome glimpse into what kids on Tumblr are doing. Gee - who would have thought that a generation that grew up with porn everywhere would have a hyper-sexual aesthetic (laughs). JW: How much weed do you really smoke? JW: People always ask me this. I smoke about $200 worth a week. Weed is worth more in weight than gold. So yeah between that and my Gatorade addiction it’s getting expensive. JW: What’s your idea of heaven? JW: There will be 72 sad Tumblr girls waiting for me in paradise, sipping watermelon Gatorade and smoking blunts floating on Valium clouds. JW: In your live installation shows and hotel parties, you have tapped into things like Tumblr trends and club kid fashion – kind of “cool” themes. Are you cool? JW: (Laughs) No. People who are cool are chill. People always expect me to be this chill guy but I’m not! I’m eccentric and anxious and this weird mix of shy and arrogant. I have ADD and ADHD, so I’m overly emotional. At parties I’m either too shy or too drunk. I’m into stuff that’s “cool” but I’m not cool. And I’m a bit of a jock, so yeah super uncool! 1AM: We keep hearing about your haters. Who are your haters? JW: They are almost all males around my age. I

don’t care who hates my art but I do care about who likes it. And that’s young women. And in my real life, men have never liked me, and women have always been down. So it’s fitting that it’s worked out this way. I’m not complaining (laughs). 1AM: The shoot you did for 1AM is itself controversial because you’re pictured measuring a model’s waist with a tape measure. Why did you choose to do this? JW: It was a reference to some of the trolling the model, Nahal, gets online. People say that she looks anorexic. She says she is not anorexic. Her friends say she is not anorexic. The thousands of followers on her Instagram are obsessed with and inspired by her physical appearance. We live in a time where women are measuring their own thigh gaps, and then there are are men who care about this “box gap” stuff as well. How is me holding a measuring tape up to this girls body anything but a very relevant comment on the current climate around female body image? 1AM: The shoot features you taking acid stamped with Adidas logos, measuring a model, you look passed out in some of the shots. And it’s shot by Jack Mannix who himself is a controversial figure. Will you ever do anything mainstream enough to be featured in a magazine they sell in Woolworths? JW: (Laughs). Yeah I know! I’m that guy who smoked illegal drugs in front of cop shops, and gets models to pass out in night clubs, oh and yeah, he also gets girls to smoke weed and show their butts on camera! Lets get that guy, seems like a safe bet!. Stay tuned for Jesse’s next viral Tabloid Art experiment landing soon. WATCH VIDEO OF THIS SHOOT ON 1AMTV

BUZZ KULL

> 1ST UP HOT SOUNDS

WITH THEIR NEW EP HEAT OUT NOW ON BANDCAMP, AND A STRING OF RECENT GIGS, SYDNEY DUO BUZZ KULL’S MUSICAL MASTERMIND MARC DWYER FILLS JOEY FENAUGHTY IN ON THE BUZZ THEY’VE BEEN CREATING. BUZZ KULL’S REBECCA LISTON AND MARC DWYER PHOTOGRAPHED BY KITTY CALLAGHAN

BUZZ KULL started in January 2012 with Marc Dwyer posting a bunch of tracks online under a fake name because he didn’t want his friends to listen to them and think he was depressed. From there it has snowballed into a musical project that occupies his vast creative energy and time. I sat down with Marc to have a chat with him about his music, style and bodyboarding - well kind of. 1AM: So you guys recently played The Mountain Sounds festival - how was that for you? MARC: It was good. It was super hot. Because it was on top of the hill the heat was excess. At one point the sun was beaming so hard on the stage I couldn’t see any of my pedals or anything. And my keyboard over-heated and wouldn’t play anything but white noise but it kinda worked. 1AM: Do Buzz Kull play many festivals? MARC: Not really. We aren’t really a festival band but in saying that they are fun to play. Everyone we talk to at them says stuff like “oh this doesn’t really seem like your thing to play”. Then they kind of tell us what they think we should be playing. 1AM: That sounds like a fun conversation. MARC: I don’t care - everyone can have their own little outlook on things, but it’s not going to stop us from playing any festival. I can understand how we aren’t a festival band but to classify a band as a festival band is pointless. I guess it’s just those festivals that tend to gather all the hot bands that are on Australian radio, which are mostly straight-down-the line guitar bands because the most popular bands here [in Australia] are guitar bands. 1AM: So almost all of your physical releases have been released in Europe (Lost Control single was released by Spanish label Latitudes, I Disappear released as a 7inch single through Greek label Fabrika) - have you spent a lot of time there? And is there any particular reason your music is more popular there? MARC: Well we did have one release in the US as well, it was more like a demo on a compilation

cassette tape through a label called Function Operate but we didn’t really deal with them much after that. As far as travelling to Europe I’ve spent a little bit of time in on the coast of France but that’s the only place I’ve really been to. As to the response we get over there, the particular style of music that we play has existed since the 70’s when everyone would list it as coldwave, but now it’s more stylised as darkwave, and I don’t think that genres like this really die out in Europe like they do in Australia. Here we have sort of flavours of the month or even flavours of the year where a music style just gets abused and then kind of fizzles out. I mean it’s depressing music for people who may suffer from depression (laughs) and I can totally relate to that. I’m not going to lie - I feel better that this is the case because I was in that place when I wrote most of the songs especially the earlier stuff. 1AM: Do you find you need to be in that sort of frame of mind to be able to write for Buzz Kull? MARC: Sometimes yes, unfortunately I’m trying to work around it now, because obviously everything is kind of coming up millhouse at the moment (laughs). 1AM: What about with Myth and Tropics (Marc’s former band with Liam O’Brian of the now defunct Sydney cult band The Scare) did you need to find a similar state of mind for writing then? MARC: Well that was really my first experience with writing properly, so I wasn’t really trying to aim it towards anything or anyone in particular - it was more singing along to a melody and whatever words I found that made sense as a song. So the songs didn’t really hold as much sentimental meaning for me - but at the same time making them with Liam and having them as a part of my history is important. 1AM: Is it true you used to be a pro bodyboarder? MARC: (laughs) I used to and still do hang out with a lot of bodyboarders but no that is not true. I actually used to write the music reviews for a bodyboarding magazine though.

1AM: So let’s just talk about the new EP Heat for a second it sounds like you had a pretty tough time getting it out. MARC: I had finished what I would say was the majority of the EP around May last year. I was doing some mild changes to the production and unfortunately I had not backed up my hard drive and it crashed and I lost everything from lyrics to production files. I had some rough mp3 demos that I had kept aside. So I basically had to use them as a reference point to attempt to re-write the EP. It was the most disheartening and emotionally draining experience in my life. I eventually came to a point where I had finished what I thought was as close as I could come to the original work I had made but I didn’t feel like I should make money off something that I had made the second time. Then the bushfires broke out in NSW in October and I decided to release the EP on Bandcamp and donate the money from it to the bushfire appeal. 1AM: What’s your favourite track on the new EP? MARC: Remote Dreams. It was probably the quickest song written but also the one that holds the most value for me. When I hear it I feel effected by it, but when I perform it, it has a stronger force behind it. It’s one of those songs I can actually perform how I felt when I wrote it. 1AM: Lastly, as this is a fashion issue of 1AM could you let the readers in on how to get the Marc Dwyer steeze? MARC: I like to keep it simple, chromatic colours. I like military colours. I used to wear leather shoes but I realised how much they were fucking up my feet, so now I’ve had to start wearing sneakers. Other than that I really like wearing assorted size suit pants with different kinds of T-shirts without trying to go for that preppy post punk look too much.

Buzz Kull’s EP Heat is out now on Bandcamp.

1AM CAIT

LIN & HU

GH

CAITLIN > 1AM: What were you doing in Tokyo? CAITLIN: I was on a 6 week contract over there so working my ass off really! Sleep-jobcasting repeat haha... I finished my job early this particular day and I messaged Sarah like “Sarah I actually have time off lets hang out!” So we all met up at Hugh’s place and Sarah brought some cool clothes and these pictures happened haha. 1AM: What are you wearing? CAITLIN: We are both completely covered in DI$COUNT. 1AM: You first appeared in 1AM a couple of years ago in a massive 30 page accessories story not wearing much at all, and in a recent issue heavily styled up for a streetwear story - how long have you been modelling for now and what are some of the highlights? CAITLIN: This is my sixth year now. It’s been a crazy journey though. I had long blonde hair when I shot with you guys the first time!!! My biggest highlight is always going to be my first Chanel show. Nothing can beat that feeling I had walking out on that catwalk. But walking for any of the bigger labels was incredible. Doing a Louis Vuitton show with Kate Moss blew my mind! It was a very ok-breathhhhhact cool-breathhhhhhh, kind of moment! 1AM: Describe your own personal style? My style constantly changes. I get inspiration from everywhere I go. After coming back from Tokyo I have noticed my clothing choices have become more quirky! 1AM: You’ve been muse to a number of designers including P.A.M and I know you have many close friends in the industry who‘s clothes you often sport - who are your personal favourites? CAITLIN: Shauna and Misha at P.A.M are such legends! Their designs are rad and they throw awesome parties. Shauna has actually been so good to me outside of the industry too. She gives me good honest advice about life and has been really supportive of me when I tried to study fashion design (haha didn’t last long) and also when I started studying again. I really respect her. Another favourite label of mine is Orphn. Beau the designer has only got a dudes line at the moment but I actually really like wearing the guys stuff! He’s bringing out a ladies line soon I’m so excited to see it! He’s another awesome human. Legend! 1AM: You’re super professional to work with and always give 100% of yourself in shoots can you explain what’s important to you as a part of an editorial team and what you bring to the fore in making successful pictures. CAITLIN: Aw thank you! Honestly I think along as you bring a good attitude to a shoot you

can’t go wrong. If you walk into a shoot acting like a snobby bitch, thinking you’re too cool for everyone its going to rub bad vibes on everyone. No one likes bad attitudes. The best shoots are always the fun ones! The last one I did for you guys I had an awesome time with the crew! 1AM: What aspects of fashion and the industry do you find inspiring? CAITLIN: I know how much effort goes into designing a collection so I really admire designers that are creating amazing clothes. I also find it inspiring when models are studying or doing something on the side. It’s a lot harder to be a model then people think it is so for people successfully having a life next to modelling I think is great! 1AM: What parts do you hate? CAITLIN: I hate being apart from my family for so long. I didn’t see my parents for over a year once. That actually killed me. I wish I could hang out with my sister more as well. 1AM: What do you do when you’re not modelling and what do you do to express yourself creatively? CAITLIN: When I’m not modelling I’m usually studying. I do computer programming through RMIT online its so much fun! I’m actually addicted to it. If I’m not doing that I’m usually cooking up something delicious or playing with my puppy Roxie. 1AM: Advice for young aspiring models. CAITLIN: Run it like a business. Read everything before you sign it. Be yourself and Always make time for your friends and family.

HUGH > 1AM: How long have you been modelling and is this your first time working in Japan? HUGH: I’ve been modelling for about three and a half years. This was actually my third time in Japan, I’ve been there for a total of six months collectively now. 1AM: Tokyo is an amazing, fun and crazy place to hang abounding in creativity and fashion culture - have you had much time to soak this up and what inspires you most about the city? HUGH: In Tokyo you generally have a lot of castings and jobs over your contract so it can be hard to get the time to really see the city, but now I’ve been there three times I feel like I ‘get it’ more. It can be a bit of a culture shock when you first get there from what is considered common courtesy to how you’re supposed to eat, greet or stand on a train. That’s what is special about it though everything is so meticulous and efficient but

everyone is so hospitable and welcoming, it’s a strangely comfortable contrast. 1AM: Are you into fashion and what is your personal style? HUGH: I wasn’t at all when I started modelling and I still wouldn’t call myself into fashion but I have definitely learnt a lot more and come to appreciate the creativity and work that goes into it. If I had enough money I’d probably just wear Comme des Garçon - Rei Kawakubo is my favourite. My personal style is a weird mix between like thrift store clothes and overly priced pieces I get from jobs that I would probably never buy otherwise. 1AM: Modelling offers a great opportunity to travel, broaden your horizons and meet people from around the world - did you know Caitlin or Sarah before coming here? HUGH: I think the best thing about modelling is the people you meet, it can be hard too though because you go on short trips to other cities and make really, really good friends with people and then just leave and hope that you’ll meet again at some point. Caitlin and I had met a few times last year backstage at shows during fashion week. Was the first time meeting Sarah though it was fun, after the shoot we went and saw an acid rock band called Bo Ningen and that day it was the most it snowed in Tokyo in 45 years or something ridiculous. 1AM: Where else has you modelling career taken you and what have been some highlights of this? HUGH: I’ve been lucky enough to have been to all the fashion cities; London, Paris, New York, Milan and Tokyo. I would say that New York and Tokyo are definitely my favourites. 1AM: It’s much harder to make a career and living as a male model - how did you fall into it, is this full time for you and what else do you do or have plans too? HUGH: I started modelling because one of my friends sent photo’s to an agency I was very tentative about the whole thing being as indifferent as I was to fashion, but I’m so glad it happened. It’s not a full time job for me I’m currently studying a Bachelor of Science majoring in Nanotechnology so I’m planning on getting that done and hopefully becoming a research scientist in the not so distant future. 1AM: Advice for aspiring male models? HUGH : Have fun, be professional, but don’t take the job or yourself too seriously. And let’s be honest you will most likely need a plan B or a plan A that’s on hold. CAITLIN @ IMG and HUGH @ CHIC wear clothes by DI$COUNT UNIVERSE, t-shirt stylists own.
