Introducing JOJO ROSS, JARRAD GODMAN and RACHEL MILLS, three eponymous fashion labels fresh out of New Zealand. With a strong sense of where they’re going and doing what they do best, all three designers have taken the time to look, listen and gain in knowledge before taking that leap into doing their own thing under their own names. Experimental, exciting, not hidden behind codewords, nicknames or monikers they’ve put their name to their work, as risky as that may be - and that’s exactly what we love about them. WORDS & FASHION CHRIS LORIMER PHOTOGRAPHY DAVID K SHIELDS MAKEUP & HAIR CORINNA WILMSHURST
WITH HER SECOND ready-to-wear collection in stores, 27-year-old JOJO ROSS has a strong legacy of conceptual works behind her, including a dress that had a working water feature. Pairing down her somewhat futuristic and sculptural practice to create garments for everyday wear has been the challenge for Ross, but she’s not quieted down her voice, rather she’s laser focused on making claen minimal pieces with a signature ethereal touch. Why did you start your own brand? I continued to make conceptual pieces after finishing fashion school, at Otago Polytechnic in Dunedin, as they were well received but as much as I loved doing them I never made any money. I began my brand so I could continue to create, but channel my ideas into a more wearable approach. As my brand grows I hope to do more challenging pieces and work with more technologies. But at the moment I guess I’m still learning how make readyto-wear! Who is your woman – how do you know what to design for her? I don’t really have one, actually I don’t really think about people at all when I design. I design because I get really obsessed with things, or feelings, or ideas… I just focus on translating my thoughts towards that particular inspiration into shapes I find pleasing. What are you favourite fabrics to use and why? Anything fused -I love creating shapes and augmenting figures. I’m also continually obsessed with using pvc and plastics and I don’t know why…. probably because they’re so shapely... and shiny.
What are your inspirations for this current collection? My Spring/Summer ‘16 collection ‘B-2’ was inspired by Northrop Grumman’s B-2 Spirit Stealth Bomber. It was designed in secret during the cold war era, it’s fucking huge and has the most incredible otherworldly form. It flies soundlessly and is basically undetectable; it’s so surreal to watch, even just on YouTube. My fascination with the B-2 manifested itself in this collection through two entirely different strains of thought. I love the B-2’s form, the aerodynamic lines, the sci-fi like technology, the steel and the speed. On the flipside, I love watching planes quietly drifting through the sky. There’s something so calm about flying, weaving amongst puffy clouds and watching miniature worlds below. The combination of these two elements result in a collection of Top Gun-esqe bravado collided with the dreamy notion of flying. What direction do you see your brand taking in the next 5 years? The pieces I want to make just don’t really fit into just the (small) New Zealand market so I’ve definitely got my eyes set on taking my brand abroad. Hopefully Australia soon - then beyond. I’d love to get into the Asian market, particularly Japan and Korea. They are such inspiring countries to visit and I’ve observed people there are always so forward thinking in their style.

SINCE GRADUATING JUST two years ago, 26-year-old JARRAD GODMAN has a fourth season of his line in stores with collection number five having just walked the runway at NZ Fashion Week in his own solo show. Describing his work as “experimental patterning matched with dark undertones and blended with humour”, Godman has also taken his time to explore the working of the fashion industry before jumping headlong into the market. Why did you start your own brand? I studied fashion at AUT and after graduating in 2014, the end goal was always to have my own label. The opportunity came around a lot sooner than expected when my graduation collection was picked up by a buyer straight away. I was definitely thrown in the deep end but that has meant that I have learnt the ins and outs of the industry a lot quicker than I would have otherwise. What do you think the pros and cons are of having a fashion education before starting a brand, rather than just jumping straight in? It really depends on what experience you have before going to study. For me, my experience was very limited so studying fashion allowed me to gain skills and start to identify and develop my style. There are obvious downsides to studying, like assignments that don’t excite you and tedious group projects, but in fairness those projects teach you a lot about yourself. Who is your woman? And how do you know what to design for her? I am still unsure who “my woman” is. I have found that my audience is so varied that I struggle to define her… Although there are key words that I’ve found to link these women together – humorous, confident, adventurous and creative. What are your favourite fabrics to use and why? I love working with lighter silks as they work so well with the oversized silhouettes I favour in my collections so far. Wool is also a huge part of my winter collections – I love working with the different wooly textures that come out each season. Although your brand is still very new, do you have any developing signatures? In terms of how I make my pieces, yes: I bind all my garments in silk, and create a triple raw edge silk georgette finish on most of the lightweight garments. These finishings have become staple methods in my collections so far. What are your inspirations for this current collection? When I designed my A/W 16 collection, I was inspired by the manipulation of the human mind using the internet – such as reading through scary stories on creepypasta.com, watching horror movies alone in the dark or self-diagnosing illnesses online, pretty much creating self-induced psychosis and paranoia. So my Spring/Summer ‘16 collection ‘Good God, Man!’ was created to combat that in an attempt to find the more positive aspects of life online all whilst returning to the real world.

26-YEAR-OLD RACHEL MILLS does new things with denim, cotton, velvet and silk – turning simple shapes and fabrics into 3-D wearability with a twist. After studying both graphic design and fashion and time working in the pattern department for Karen Walker as well as in retail, Mills felt the time was right to strike out on her own working seriously on her namesake label in 2015. Why did you start your own brand? It sounds so cliché, but starting my own brand was what I had always imagined, so for me it was more of a question of when. Designing and creating clothing is what I have always done and what feels the most natural, so being able to live off it is a dream. Who is your woman? And how do you know what to design for her? It seems a very selfish way to design, but my woman is often someone I would like to see myself as, or she is someone that inspires me. I am not ashamed to admit that humans are self absorbed, and I am no exception to that. If I can do what I love and be able to find joy in sharing that with others, it is a dream come true. It is a huge motivation to be designing my own ideal wardrobe each season. What are you favourite fabrics to use and why? I’m always drawn towards natural fibres more than anything because they provide the most comfort. The next thing that gets me is the way a fabric reacts over time, ideally for the better. Whether it is a fabric that stays looking beautiful and luxe like a silk or something that takes on a new form after washing and wearing like raw denim or a crunchy cotton poplin. Although your brand is still very new, do you have any developing signatures? I like to treat getting dressed as more of a ritual. We all seem to be in such a rush all the time, and I want to slow down the process. I want my garments to be treated as pieces with substance. This is why I often look towards the way my garments close as an opportunity for interest. Rather than just sticking a zip in, I look at how to enhance the design. In Abyssal, this translates as openings and tying at the pockets, and elasticated enclosures. What are your inspirations for this current collection? My collectiion ‘Abyssal’ is the exploration of the unknown. It refers to the part of the ocean that is unexplored and untouched that we can’t quite fathom, where uncertainty turns into something otherworldly. I wanted to twist this idea into a practical Summer uniform, where denim goes with velvet, and silk crepe de chine can be worn daily.

Hi, my name is Gigi Mae Ringel, I’m 19 years old and from The Netherlands. At the moment I’m based in Byron Bay spending some quality time with my boyfriend who’s Australian. We met each other in Amsterdam at his band’s (TORA) gig. I was a total fan of their electronic chillwave music and then also fell in love with him.
After spending some time with my family in the Algarve in Portugal (which they say looks like Australia’s baby) and a short trip to Colombia, summer season in Europe is over so I thought we just skip winter this year as I love living in bikini’s, swimming in the ocean and I secretly always get a bit sad of grey days. I’m always so excited when I open the curtains and see a clear blue sky. Oh and how good is living two minutes
from the beach?
Now I’m here having some leisure time, I started doing some painting on the veranda of our house. As I get so inspired by all shades of green and blue, summer is the best inspiration to me. I often use gold in details as it gives warmth to the painting
and I just love a bit of glim in my work. Another thing what makes me so excited about summer is FRUIT! I never go a day without fruit as I love it as breakfast snacks or lunch (and dessert hehe). I often make smoothie bowls, banana eggs or shakes. Blueberries are by far my number one. I’ll be heading down to Sydney soon to work with my agency Priscillas. Working in Australia is amazing. It feels like a group of friends working together which gives such good vibes on set and makes everyday so fun! Sydney is also one of my favorite cities I’ve been to (together with Barcelona). Especially ‘cause of all the good cafes Sydney has. I’m staying at Bondi Beach and can’t wait to wake up early and go to
one of the cutest cafe’s and order my yummiest meal of the day - breakfast. It will also be my first time spending a Christmas and New Years in summertime, which seems pretty weird to celebrate these days in cool clothes (or nothing!!) instead of sweaters and drink wine on the beach instead of under a blanket near the fireplace.
I’ll be in Australia till the end of April and then go back to The Netherlands again, where it will be spring and soon summer season again. I guess I can’t complain :-)
