welcome to 1AM ‘let it rock! from the early jazz clubs, through rock’n’roll, disco, punk, new wave, dance music, grunge and beyond, ‘the devils music’ was always considered a symbol of rebellion, the voice of the underground, embraced by youth over the decades as a way of defining themselves from the previous generation and for those on the fringe considered outsiders. but for most of us now, its just a part of life.

photo by GLENN HUNT CEDRIC @ N MODEL MANAGEMENT wears top by STOLEN GIRLFRIENDS CLUB, shorts and studded hat both bought online, shoes by DEMONIA, bandana from $2 shop.

Who are you and What do you do? I’m Cedric and I'm a model currently signed to N Model Management. What's the most rebellious thing you've ever done? I smoked weed at school with a couple of mates and we got caught and suspended. I supplied the weed so I got in a bit more trouble. Do you consider yourself an outsider and why? Yes! I'm the worst when it comes to making friends or fitting in. I mean, I love making new friends but I hate meeting people. I can't explain it. I just get really nervous and I don't know what to say or how to react to something someone says. I get all shaky. It's weird. I really do try to converse with people though. What most fucks you off at the moment? There's so many things that fuck me off right now that I could probably write a novel! But the number 1 thing that really makes me want to rip someone's head off is when people use other people to get somewhere or get something. I know it's common but I never realized how common it was until I got into modeling. I've never been used though, hopefully. Three things you couldn't live without? My laptop, phone, and family. Poison of choice? Straight vodka! Best gig you've seen? I'm going to sound like a total dick but LADY GAGA. Probably the most generic pop music of all time but her shows are amazing. There's so much that goes into her performances. Enlightening message for the world? Fuck what other people think.

Who are you and what do you do? I'm Lily, I live for a living. For an interest I model, photograph, design and hustle my way through life best I can. What's the most rebellious thing you've ever done? This would get me in trouble hahaha! I'm tinted with pyromania and the urge to go against what everyone says, so it's really a recipe for disaster. I'll leave that to your imagination. Do you consider yourself an outsider? I don't label myself, but it's up to others what they think. I like looking in from the outside. What most fucks you off at the moment? People, and their lack of integrity. Three things you couldn't live without? Jared, designer items, and my graphic design setup (Laptop, monitor, Wacom tablet). Poison of choice? Anything lethal. Nothing legal. Best gig you've played or seen? In bed with one of my guitars, sleep rockin'. Enlightening message for the world? Read 1am Magazine x FTP

Who are you and what do you do? Support Specialist for an NZ ISP, computer and network engineer. What's the most rebellious thing you've ever done? Pulled the fingers at the cops whilst passing them in a 7 series BMW. At 240kmph. Do you consider yourself an outsider and why? I love street racing, I love fucked up gigs and I love body mods, I think tattoo's and piercings should be the norm and forget its not normal to have coloured hair. What most fucks you off at the moment/currently? Shit talkers and betrayal. Three things you couldn't live without? Close mates, Shincup Noodles, Music. Poison of choice? Pharmaceuticals. Best gig you've seen? Either Peaches or Muse, can't decide, both were epic. Enlightening message for the world? Drink Robotussin, it makes your life fucking way better.

Who are you and what do you do? I'm Reuben, I make music under the name TOTEMS. I'm also a part of CAROLES, GOTENKS and the KCB family. I've been in a bunch of other bands too. Whats your biggest achievement to date? I guess playing the BDO/ Opening for DEERHOOF/HEALTH in 2010. But I'm also opening for LUNICE and GOLD PANDA in the next month or so, which is pretty surreal. What’s the most rebellious thing you’ve ever done? I dunno, I used to smoke pot every day in my room for a

while when I was 14? Do you consider yourself an outsider and why? I guess I’m an outsider, in the sense that I’m into a lot of weird shit that not many other people are and I’ve never really had that many close friends. With that being said, I get along with most people quite well. Three things you couldn’t live without? Music, Weed and the Internet. Poison of choice? Whiskey+Ginger Ale or Sizzurp Best gig you’ve played or seen? KING BROTHERS when I was 12 and

it ripped my mind open. Very close second is the last 2 DEERHOOF shows in NZ. Kick ass plans for the future? I'm hopefully going to tour the west coast of the US in Sept/Oct/Nov, which should be pretty fucking tight. Enlightening message for the world? Everyone please chill the fuck out and smoke more weed. I feel like a lot of people take everything too seriously and get way to caught up in their extremely materialistic lives, which is funny ‘cos in the end all of that shit is super meaningless.

“BROOKE CANDY IS LIKE A STRIPPER RAPPER. SHE’S SO AWESOME. ONE OF THE REASONS I WENT TO LA TO SHOOT THE OBLIVION VIDEO WAS BECAUSE I SAW HER AT A PARTY AND SHE WAS LIKE THE CRAZIEST PERSON I’D SEEN IN MY LIFE. I WANTED TO MAKE A VIDEO OF JUST HER. I HAVE PROJECTIONS IN MY LIVE SHOW THAT ARE OUTTAKES OF HOURS OF HER DOING CRAZY SHIT THAT I COULDN’T USE IN MY VIDEO. SHE’S KIND OF AN ARTSY STRIPPER. I DON’T THINK SHE WORKS IN A TYPICAL STRIP CLUB. IT’S MORE PERFORMANCE ART THAN STRIPPING. WHEN YOU SEE HER PERFORM IT’S PRETTY VIOLENT AND AGGRESSIVE. BROOKE ISN’T ABOUT BEING A RANDOM HOT GIRL. SHE’S INTO INTIMIDATING PEOPLE. THE REASON I REALLY WANTED TO WORK WITH HER IS THAT SHE’S REALLY INTO RECONTEXTUALISING THINGS LIKE PORNOGRAPHY AND RECLAIMING THAT KIND OF IMAGERY THAT’S USED TO DEMEAN WOMEN. I’VE ALWAYS HAD A FASCINATION WITH THINGS THAT BORDER ON THAT KIND OF VAGUELY PORNOGRAPHIC THING BUT ARE EITHER NOT SEXUAL OR ARE BEING USED FOR SOME OTHER PURPOSE. I THINK BROOKE EMBODIES THAT.” GRIMES ON BROOKE

WHO IS BROOKE CANDY? I’m an LA-based rapper/warrior princess speaking my truth and battling oppression on all levels. Helping free women of sexual stigmas and letting the world know FagMob is taking over Was it a long journey for you to reach the release of your debut single Das Me? Well, it’s taken my whole life to gain the life experiences that influenced the sentiments expressed in Das Me. I had to experience the double standards and figure out who I am as a woman to spit the way I do in the single. Whos Asian toddler is that on a leash in the video? The stylist pulled him for me. Asian toddlers are really big for winter and I think they’ll last all the way through spring 2013 Did you get some extreme comments or reactions when people saw you? I’ve been getting extreme reactions my whole life, the only difference is now a lot more of them are documented in misspelled user comments for the world to see. What’s the most outrageous thing you’ve done? Depends on what you consider outrageous. I mean, a threesome with identical twins is pretty kooky, but I’m a freaky bitch so outrageous is in a whole different context for me Where does porn fit in to your world? I respect everybody’s hustle and everyone’s freedom, but I wouldn’t consider my art to be a part of the porn industry. But keep doing it, babes. I’m a big fan. How did you get into stripping? Are you still working? I got started as sort of a way of diving head first into the performance waters. If I can show my pussy to 40 sweaty dudes licking their lips and throwing crumpled singles, then I can definitely rap for thousands of legitimate music fans there to appreciate me for exactly who I am. My performance and recording schedule doesn’t allow me to strip anymore, but I’m not against going back and doing a pole dance cameo. Is it hard to shock people now? Probably. I don’t really set out to shock anyone. I just do me and express myself in a way that I feel hasn’t been

done before. And if it doesn’t fit into the perfect mold of what you think an artist should be doing, then it’s not for you. Are you & your friends inspired by the New York club kids from the 80s, and folk like Leigh Bowery? My close friends and I don’t really pull from the club kids, that Party Monster scene. We’re definitely more inspired by the memorable looks of Lil’ Kim, Cam’Ron, Christina Aguilera and the others who made a splash by doing something different at events where most celebrities are encouraged to play it safe. You’ve been described as “the postapocalyptic Lil’ Kim”? Is that a pretty accurate description? That’s an honour. Every new artist is going to be immediately compared to someone before them, so for me to be compared to Kim is an honour. I’m huge fan. How important is it to have close friends involved in what you’re doing? I’m very fortunate that my best friends are so talented and capable of helping me achieve my vision. They’re the people I love and trust the most and they have understood my vision long before I had the platform to portray it. We have similar reference points so it makes the creative process a lot easier than trying to explain a reference to someone you’re not close with. What do you guys like to do most? I like to surround myself with talented and driven people, so the thing we really like to do most is create and bring our visions to life, whether it be recording or conceptualising a video or look. We love to put our ideas into action. And of course we like to be passing a blunt throughout the entire process. Who made your silver body armour for the Grimes video? The silver body armour and all my robotic sexy warrior looks were created by LA-based designer Seth Pratt, who happens to be one of my best friends. Many of the looks that you’ve seen me in are collaborative designs between he and I. What’s been your best look? Each look I do is better than the last. I’m pretty excited for you all to see my new video, Everybody Does. A lot of those looks are what I’d consider to be

the next level for me. My looks are only getting better, dawg. You can look very intimidating in your pictures & videos, but are you really a pussycat? Depends which side of me needs to come out. I’m a really loving passionate person who loves to cuddle, but I’ll get crazy on a motherfucker so really don’t cross me. And you like cats too, huh? Pussy run errthang. You’ve been quoted as saying you’re a lover and a fighter. Have you always been bisexual? I’ve always been attracted to both genders, just depends on the person. And I really don’t discriminate with my crazy ass ways. Doesn’t matter if you’re a chick or a dude, I’ll still fuck you one second and punch you out the next. Do your mum or dad get what you’re about? They sort of know what I do but don’t keep up with everything, I really don’t do this for them though. What did your father do “behind the scenes” for Hustler magazine? I’d tell you but I’d have to kill you. Are you ambitious? I’m really ambitious. I came from nothing and now you’re interviewing me for your magazine. I know with my ambition, vision and work ethic there’s no limit for me. This time next year I’ll run the world. Watch. How important to your profile was Grimes’ Genesis video? Shout out to Grimes. That’s my bitch. She understood my vision from the beginning. I know a lot of people saw me from that video that probably wouldn’t have seen me otherwise, so I’ll always be grateful that she gave me that opportunity. What are your impressions of Claire and her work as Grimes? She’s the shit. I know her hustle and respect her vision and how much creative control she maintains over her whole project as it continues to grow into this monster career. I have mad love and respect for her.

GRRLFRIENDZ INTERVIEWED BY PEARL MCGLASHAN PHOTOGRAPHED BY KITTY RIDDELL FASHION BY IMOGEN WILSON HAIR AND MAKEUP BRIGHDE RIDDELL

SO, HOW DID YOU ALL MEET? Toyah: Um. It was like January (2012) and Sophia and I were at a party. We’d known each other since intermediate school and kind of reunited, and in one of Sophia’s drunken rambles, we decided to start a girl band. Then, well, I didn’t really know Annabel but she was a mutual friend kind of, and someone told me she was a really good guitarist. So Sophia got in touch and then Annabel like showed up at my house in her school uniform and was like, “I’ve come to jam with you!” Annabel: Yeah and then me and Toyah jammed. Toyah: Yeah but from what I remember it was kind of like, folk… country? Sorta? So it was just a vocals and guitar jam? T: Well it was just kinda my introduction to Annabel S: Yeah but I was set on having a punk band, so I was just like, “Yup, this is what we’re doing.” And starting the band came from an idea at a party? A: It came from Sophia and a bottle of whiskey. S: Me and a bottle of whiskey can come up with a lot… T: But we had all been in previous bands. S: Toyah was in a proper band. T: that I then dropped out of to be in this band. Toyah, you just came out of a year ar art school and Sophia and Annabel, you just finished high school - so other than making music, what do you all do? S: Im just looking for a new full-time job And what did you do? S: Ahem, I was a hair dressers assistant, and I washed out dyes, and uh, chatted with middle aged women about their stupid fucking husbands and their bloody dumbass lives, and, and their children in their private schools. A: Hey! S: Oh yeah sorry. T: And you wonder why you can’t find a new job.

I heard someone make the comment that you all came from private schools is that the case? S: No way. Me… in a private school… would be, hilarious. T: I went to a semi-private – didn’t work out. Dropped out. A: I went to a private school for my last year of school, but what does that even say about a person? It says my parents are slightly controlling, and wanted me to go to a private school. Didn’t do anything, evidently. T: Annabel has been working at vintage stores on K-Rd but now has a job at Glassons! T: and I work at Greenpeace, which is really cool. What do you do at Greenpeace? T: mostly telefundraising, occasionally going out onto the street, very occasionally, doing things like going to events like Christmas in the park to get signatures on petitions and things like that. Do you go to protests? T: I went to the recent protest against the TPPA before it turned nasty, but that wasn’t actually a Greenpeace organized event. Back to your music - so how have been getting your gigs, have you been going out and asking people or has it all sort of fallen into your laps? S: People just email us! It’s kind of crazy. A: they’re just like, “wanna play a gig?” and we’re like, “Yup”. The Die!Die!Die! one was a really big surprise. Do you say yes to everything? A: Most things, but not everything. We are starting to have to be more selective. T: Either just because we’re so busy or its not our style.. A: But so far they’ve all been really good gigs, like we haven’t been offered anything that we didn’t want to play. If something came up and we didn’t want to play it we’d say no, but we’re getting offered to play with established bands like Die!Die!Die!, Rackets, and Beach

Pigs.. and all those bands are so much fun we don’t want to say no! And Annabel, you’ve said to me that the members of those bands are some of the people you most look up to and admire from the Auckland music scene. S: Yeah because they have such high energy all the time. T: and they make you feel good A: and they played the gigs we always went to before we played in a band T: when I first started going to gigs and stuff it was always them that you’d go to watch, they’re such big draw cards. S: But yeah, often we get gigs by playing gigs, and then people see us, and they like us, and then they’ll ask us if we want to play an upcoming show they’re organizing. A: just people seeing us and liking what we do, and asking us to play. S: Yeah that’s how we met John Baker from Real Groove, he saw us and liked our set. you mentioned Bob Frisbee (Frisbee Studios) was giving you some help to do some recording, how’s that going? S: Yeah we’ve been in the studio recording the first half of our album. What are your musical influences? T: Bikini Kill. S: Hole. A: Red Aunts. S: The Donnas. The Donnas was like our first cover, kind of got this little place in our hearts for them, I think. A: The runaways… T: and influences other than music; Sophia has this book called Japanese Fruits [a book based on a Japanese fashion magazine] and we always look at it. Because we’re all friends, band practice always turns into hanging out. A: yeah… we hardly ever practice… What sort of movies/TV shows do you watch? S: Toyah really wants to cover the song from Romeo and Juliet; T: the Baz Lurhman one. Okay it sounds so cliché, because everyone fucking loves it now, but that is my favourite movie. > pg 88

DRONE... I’D R ATHER BE A Which song from the movie? S: The garbage song T: The one that goes, “I would die for you” I don’t know it I’ll have to look it up. A: Well anyway, we’re gonna cover it soon. T: I love it, it’s like the prefect mix between really mellow and kind of chick-grunge but also quite pop-py, almost like The Cardigans like in the chorus… it’s awesome. How do you feel about the part you play, both yourselves, and the three of you as a band, in issues facing the world right now, be they environmental or otherwise. Toyah, you work for Greenpeace so that’s obviously a factor? S: I feel like we’re way too little to make a difference. T: (sarcastically) Every person can make a difference. (All laugh) A: You’ve just got to make sure you’re leading by example. It’s all very well yelling about it but.. T: It’s not even about being political [in your music] and offending anyone, but my issue and the world’s I think at the moment is the environment, and from a purely environmental stance it doesn’t have to be a political thing. Like, I mean, a lot of people that are fucking it up are politicians sure, but it’s everyone, like every person who doesn’t recycle… like it’s everyone’s responsibility. A: and as far as our band goes in contributing to future environmental successes we’ve just got to make sure we’re doing all the right things that we can and that hopefully our friends and the people close to us are doing the same thing. And I imagine all of you would be open to playing fundraising shows/protests like the TPPA one? S: Oh fuck yeah. T: I would love that. I would be so honoured.

A: That would be amazing. S: We’d maybe dial down our set a little bit (laughs). Okay, so even though you’ve only been around for a short while, there has already been controversy surrounding one of your songs, which has lead to a big discussion happening in the Auckland music scene about the band. My theory on this is that you all know why you offended some people, but it wasn’t your intention, and essentially, you just want to play music and have fun. True? S: That’s exactly it. T: The whole feminist thing can be really confusing, but we have no political stance on the issue. We are just playing music. T: Someone’s always going to be offended by something, even if it’s totally unintentional. A: The person running this venue where we played last night, she was chatting to us about it, and said “it’s just fucking ridiculous, just cause you’re a bunch of young girls they feel like they need to attack you guys”. I mean, is there still controversy over it? Apparently, yes. A: Wow. S: Well it’s not like we’re not trying to make up for it. I still like the song, our interview for UTR was just bad on our behalf, we should of just gotten across how meaningless the song was. Instead we tried to make up some dumb hidden meaning kind of as a joke but hadn’t really thought about what we were actually saying. This girl gave me Female Chauvinist Pigs by Ariel Levy that I’m reading at the moment. It’s really good. Its so interesting and opened up lots of views that I’d never thought about. A: we are not a “feminist” band. But of course we believe in equality. T: But all the stuff you read on social media, in books or see in films are all

people’s opinions. We should have the right to learn for ourselves and formulate our own. It’s not as clear as right and wrong, there are in-betweens and different perspectives and I think that’s where the stuff in that interview got misinterpreted and confused. So you agree it’s important to have the conversation, and look into why people got offended, rather than thinking just ‘fuck you’? S: Yes, of course, it was a bad joke which could have been taken literally as ‘slut shaming’ which was never our intention, I mean; Toyah. When you were writing that song… T: Yeah I was just sitting in my class at school, and I was bored and the words just happened to rhyme, and Annabel started playing guitar later and I said “Hey that would fit with this song I wrote”. We respect feminist views and the Riot Grrl movement. A: But that’s not our message. T: Basically just found out the boredom and whoredom rhyme and based a song around it. A: We loved playing that song because the crowd always got into it, and it was really fun at the time. When Toyah wrote it, I even joked that it might be about me. But now its all been taken too literally. Glad we cleared that up! So you guys played the recent Snakepit farewell show, Snakefest (see page 154) you said you can’t really remember playing but how did you find the overall experience of the night? T: Yeah the set was a blur but the.. S: The set was fun, it was so fun, but we played early on and we kinda just wanted to get it out of the way so we could enjoy all the other amazing bands. T: I thought the performance art that Hana Aoke did was amazing. A: the whole experience, the inflatable pool downstairs, all the bands… S: it was such a great feeling, to be surrounded by all these different artists

LONE” BUBBLE

making all this different art, and being asked to be a part of it. T: A lot of artistic people in the same spot, appreciating and encouraging each other, no one was being negative. A: I’m really sad Snakepit’s gone. S: Snakepit was like our home. Our second gig ever was at Snakepit and that was cool cult’s EP release. We were on the floor screaming with excitement when we got asked to play that show, which is funny, now when we get gigs, like it’s still awesome, but nothing compared to the excitement of being asked to play those first few shows. T: it was like the place to go, and it was always funny when the cops showed up, trying to arrest people drinking on the street. It just had a buzz about it. Important because it was an all ages venue? A: I think ‘all ages’ venues are so important because just because you’re not 18 yet, like you should still have the right to listen to music, I mean that’s what it’s all about. S: I think UFO (Powertool Records gig

space in New Lynn) is a good spot for those [all ages] gigs. T: there’s this band we know called The Whodunits, they’re like 15-16, and we met them at UFO. S: they’re really cool and so young but they’re talented as fuck. T: they’re really rock and roll, so high energy. A: they have this song called Fuck you Jacob and it’s so great. S: and it sucks that they can’t play at so many venues in Auckland because of their age. T: I think UFO has a good chance to like take over from Snakepit. S: But it hard to get out there. T: Not really, you just hop on the train. What are your plans for next year? PostHigh school? S: Me and Toyah are working to save up so we can travel together to South-East Asia. All I’ve ever wanted to do in my life is travel. T: and Annabel is hopefully going to be able to come and meet up with us in Japan. We’re going to see if we

can land any gigs in the punk scene while we’re there cause that’d be really fucking cool. A: I’m studying and traveling. S: Annabel’s studying Medicine. So you’re going to keep writing music and playing shows in 2013 even though, Annabel you’ll be studying and the two of you will be working and saving to travel? S: Definitely. We’re working on new material and practicing loads. A: That’s the thing I’ll do apart from study, I’d miss these guys and playing way too much otherwise. T: Yeah I don’t really go out so I only really see these guys when we play gigs (laughs). Anything else you guys want to say about the band? A: We just want to make music. T: And just because we happen to be young girls doing so doesn’t mean shit. A: Hardout. MORE GRRLFRIENDZ: bandcamp

ALLAH, PEARL MCGLASHAN TAKES AS ON A MYSTICAL & FLATMATE LISANDRU GRIGORUT - COSMIC WITCHCAL SHAMEN $NOREGAZZZM - CHARTING A PATH FROM TERRITORITY OF HIS FORTHCOMING CONCEPT PROJECT

SO THAT SONG THAT YOU JUST played me, is it finished yet? No, I’ve heaps more to record. I’m going to do lots more vocals. A lot of the vocals on what I just played you are drafts, just so I know what I’m doing and then I’m going to re-record them So you kind of sketch over your beats with vocal melodies? Yeah. And I just wanted to kind of build this song around the vocals so I added heaps of stuff around it Is that what you normally do? Yeah, that’s generally my process. Unless I’ve got a song that I’ve played live before, and in that case, when I go to record the vocals I’m usually okay with them on the first few takes. But songs like this and songs for my new album which I haven’t played live that much, my process is more like I record some vocals, see what’s wrong with different parts, single them out and just keep doing over and over again until I get them right. That sounds meticulous and time consuming.

It is, but it’s worth it. I think it’s worth it, but you can over-do it. Cause I don’t want the vocals to be so… like perfect, processed, pop music, you know? I think having this whole D.I.Y, real sound is a really important part of my music. It’s not Rihanna or anything, it’s not Kanye West shit. It’s real music from a real soul. This particular song is actually a commission of sorts though right? Yeah, it’s for Rosie Thomas of the clothing label ‘Nymphets’. I did it because she talked to me about making a song for a campaign video of hers in November last year, and I “okay, I’ll write something.” And I came up with this little steel drum melody [plays me the synth line], cause she said it was going to be quite aquatic, tropical sounding… That sounds up your alley. Yeah, yeah, exactly – well, that’s why she asked me to do it. She said she was going to call it ‘Underwater Apocalypse’. So I just played around with that steel drum melody, brought

some stuff up around it, built up a beat. It’s got two kick drums in it. One keeps the beat and the other a sort of tribal beat over the top of it. I was just jamming with that and then put my Gameboy into the mix - then I decided to make a bit where I would be singing, and there would be a little chorus-y thing but not too factoryfarm, pop music chorus? So like a break but not like a dance music drop either, somewhere kind of in between. I started thinking about this song and the whole holiday theme and stuff and then I came up with the whole “weekend escape” thing, and from that I thought about how I could relate this to other stuff? And I thought, Escapism! Then I came up with using the image of the escape button on your computer keyboard as a metaphor, because I used to have these dreams when I was younger. They were nightmares where I’d be sitting playing a scary computer game but then all of sudden I’d be trapped and I wouldn’t be able to get out. I’d be able to

“ALTHOUGH PEOPLE ARE CONTENT WITH THEIR LIVES, THEIR DAILY GRIND OR WHATEVER, THEY’RE STILL ALWAYS LOOKING FOR WAYS TO ESCAPE” press the escape key over and over again, but it just didn’t work, nothing happened, I was trapped. How old were you when you were having those dreams? From ages 5-12 maybe? That’s when I started playing video games. Those nightmares are still vivid for me I can still really remember them. I’m kind of trying to tie those feelings into, as wanky as this sounds, my disillusionment with society - and the fact that although people are content with their lives, their daily grind or whatever, they’re still always looking for ways to escape. The song outlines that, that’s it. That’s the chase. You were involved in the video for the song also, what did you have to do? Yeah I was (laughs). I made-out really intensely with my fiancée. In a pool? Not IN the pool, no. I’m actually really afraid of water, and I can’t swim. It was really funny though, they had all these hanging out bits because they had a green screen, with decorations and stuff and there were people hanging out doing stuff. Then there was this scene we shot which was just me and her, her and I, making out really intensely. It was so weird because the camera was up really close and everyone else was in the pool all staring at us, like “Woah. Lisandru’s making out with someone.” I’m trying to think if I’ve ever seen you make out with someone. I don’t think I have. Moving on, is that song going to be on your new album, or is it completely unrelated. I wrote it exclusively for Rosie. I think Rosie’s a really awesome, talented girl and I thought she deserved a song specifically for the video. The album is completely separate and has it’s own concept. So what is the story/concept behind this new album your planning SPIRIT/ HELL/BEINGS? Basically it’s a mid-concept, a medium concept. It’s like an… ice, nature, science fiction, and apocalyptic thing.

Okay, where do I start? It’s the year 2014, a group of people break off from the rest of society and go to Antarctica to start a community there, based on science. But then they end up becoming really spiritual because they discover this ancient ice magic underneath the ground. They build a society underneath the ground, and it’s paradise. Why have they chosen to leave the rest of the world and go to Antarctica? The world is fucked. They’re just like, “look we can’t deal with this anymore, and this planet is going to be completely fucked.” And that was the last place they could go. So they go to Antarctica, and they discover this ancient ice magic that no one knew about and they use that to protect themselves, remaining content and separate to the rest of the world for a hundred years. So a hundred years passes and the Earth has gotten completely fucked and last resort for the whole world, or what’s left of it, was to combine into one nation. They have this really strong military that goes to try and take over Antarctica. But the society on Antarctica has the ice magic, and the ice magic trumps the military power, naturally. THERE’S THIS PROPHECY that the Antarctic society had, that was foretold by a prophet when the ice magic was released, that there was going to be an evil coming, but it would be stopped. They thought that was the military, and that they had stopped it. But there’s this dude from the military who infiltrates and becomes part of the culture of the peaceful society and their magic, and it turns out he can control the magic really well, much better than the others. They thought that he was the one to save them from the “evil”, but he actually gets possessed by the power. So he enslaves everyone. Then the ice people and the military have to work together to find what can stop the evil. They use all of their best prophets, and hook them up to

machines because the ice people have magic but they were initially scientists so they still use machines. They pretty much perform routine magic which is the concept that anything that could be considered out of the ordinary to someone can be considered magic, for instance; I could send a message to someone across the world and say, “do you believe in magic?” and they’d say no, and I’d be like, “I just sent you a message across the world, somehow, through a screen, I pressed some buttons and there it is?” So it’s that, the magic is there, but they use the machines to implement it. Anyway their best prophets and machines determine that nature is the only thing that can save them. They have to find the person who was born of nature, a sorcerer that can summon nature spirits etc - the type of person I actually originally developed for my last album Junglewave. After they find this person it takes them a while to convince them that you know, “it’s for the greater good to fight this guy because if you don’t all your home will be destroyed.” So the dude’s just like, “Well, I have no choice.” So he comes to Antarctica, fights the other dude, there’s a huge battle, then everything dies. Wow. Okay, so right off the bat, that’s a pretty big story to tell. You’ve said to me you want to make it a multimedia thing, right? Working with other art forms/artists? Definitely a multimedia project. Who are you going to get involved, and how are you planning to do this? It’s still very early stages right now. I’m going finish a lot of the music first, but not completely, just an outline and work on it in bits throughout the year. As far as the visuals go I’m working with Tawa Butt who’s going to do some animating for me, as well as Fraser [Chatham], he’s going to do some art for it.. Also Grant Stone is going to help me with filming live action stuff on green screen that I want to combine with the animation. I’ll have friends and actors doing dialogue – a lot of it will be

“WHENEVER PEOPLE SAY, WE MUSTN’T BE SENTIMENTAL, YOU CAN TAKE IT THEY ARE ABOUT TO DO SOMETHING CRUEL” internal monologue, and some of that will come off as music as well I think. So it’ll be the album, and all the videos and the video soundtracks will be separate, but all go together, so you can mix and match it yourself like a puzzle. Because the concept’s not going to be that obvious, it’s there for you to figure it out yourself. I think the beauty of that is you can make up any story you like. I’ve got this one story in my head, you know, but I put all this stuff out and someone else listens to it, they might think of something different. The point is that at the beginning everything’s a bit fucked, and then everything gets more fucked and there’s nothing, but at the end it begins again. Kind of like a re-birthing cycle. So its not like all the songs will be based around or strictly adhering to just one concept? Exactly, that’s what I meant by “medium concept”. Not totally loose but not just sticking to one subject either - kind of like all these different aspects of things interrelating to everything else as a whole. Like when you were talking about the Nymphets song before; you started with one thing but it became about so much more as you went along. Yeah, it’s good because it just gives people an opportunity to think about it and piece something together for themselves. I’m supportive of people thinking for themselves rather than just what they’re told. Like telling people, “Oh yeah blah, blah, blah, we’re gonna go out and get drunk and fuck people, and oh there’s a naked girl in our video!” That doesn’t mean anything. That’s not art to me. It can be fun, whatever, but it just doesn’t mean anything. I want to make something really meaningful. And if it disillusions a few people along the way, then there’s not much harm because at least they’re thinking about something. So the themes that are apparent in JUNGLEWAVE, of disillusionment, of

falling in love, being lost and afraid, scared of your thoughts, and being trapped inside yourself; are those going to carry on into SPIRIT/HELL/BEINGS? Kind of, not as intensely. SPIRIT/ HELL/BEINGS is probably going to be more manic and tense. Everything’s going to tense up a lot and build and build until everything just explodes. The themes from the JUNGLEWAVE, particularly the loss themes will carry over into the first bit, but it will be like, “Oh now I know where I am” then “Oh, shit, I’m possessed by a demon, but that’s okay”. A lot of the songs I think will sound quite happy, but almost too much? Like sketchy, manic brain feelings. Which I can relate to, and that’s why I create shit like that, because I can relate to those feelings. Also I want there to be under tones of the message “Don’t be a dick, try and be compassionate to the people and world around you, or else you’ll have a shitty life”. Conservation? Oh yeah definitely with the whole Antarctica thing. I came up with that concept thinking about how, in the future, are people just going to go there and just fuck it up? And then all the earth will just die? Which is a possibility. Definitely. Because nowadays if someone said they wanted to go to Antarctica and fuck it up, people would be outraged, but if you just slowly seep that idea into people’s in 30 years or whatever there’ll be no other alternative - it will be too late. That’s the problem. People just don’t think there’s an alternative. Whatever anyone decides to do, whatever corporations decide to do, whatever the government decides to do is because there’s “no alternative”. Really they just want to make profits for themselves until everything just runs out. That’s what I think. You meet people and you talk to them, and sometimes you talk about how fucked up shit is, and they say, “Oh it’s not that

bad.” That’s what they say. They don’t say it’s good, they just say it’s not that bad, implying that it is bad, but it could be worse. But if you feed people that idea, and it just gets worse and worse and worse, it’s still always just “Not that bad”. It’s never good. It can be, but for them, ‘realistically’, you know, all those words that people throw around, fuck, I read this quote the other day that goes; “Whenever people say, we mustn’t be sentimental, you can take it they are about to do something cruel”. And if they add, “We must be realistic”, they mean they’re going to make money out of it. People know though. People know that they’re being taken advantage of, but at the same time, they’re being so oblivious. Because ignorance is bliss. Yeah, exactly. They still have kids, they still have kids in this world that is getting fucked up. I was watching this interview with David Attenborough, and he had a point about over-population; there’s a lot of human over-population nowadays, and you see a lot of it in third world countries, where there’s little or no access to birth control and women don’t have rights to their bodies. That’s a fucked up thing! There’s basically just a bunch of fucked up things, and I want to make an album that doesn’t blatantly outline all of those problems, but will make you think about them, and then you kind of go on your own train of thought, rather than just being told something. Because when you try and tell people things that they don’t agree with or can’t see, they could just be really stubborn, but if you give them a little bit of fodder, then they might think about it. It’s a seed. I want to make people think. It’s what I want to do, it’s my goal. It’s my mission. MORE $NOREGAZZZM: bandcamp tumblr soundcloud

CHRISTCHURCH-BORN Malaysian actress Michelle Ang started her acting career in a tribe, experienced some outrageous fortune after rubbing shoulders with a warrior princess, went to Australia to hang with some neighbours, kept her wedding a secret before going to the United States where she was underemployed with a beaver and big momma. Confused? You won’t be after reading what Michelle has to say about herself and her life. She’s particularly excited about her role as Sophia Swanson in new MTV drama Underemployed, a series revolving round five graduates trying to make their way in the world. After getting her start on New Zealand TV in McDonalds Young Entertainers at the tender age of 17, she knows all about the trials and tribulations of life and how to live it. Background? “I’m constantly asked about my background. It’s endlessly strange to me that when I say I’m a New Zealander people look at me with an expression that dictates they want more. But that’s what I am. I was born here, it’s my home, and it’s the only place I relate to culturally. I feel a strong affinity to this beautiful country. I believe the lifestyle breeds a certain kind of laidback creativity that gives us artists an interesting flavour when offered to the global scene. Acting? Acting is something I sort of happened upon and actively strove to put one foot in front of the other to continue to do. It’s definitely a passion, but I have many passions. I don’t think I’m like those actors who wouldn’t know what to do with themselves if they couldn’t be in front of the camera or audience. Sometimes I think my curiosity about wider life and people is what enables me to act. I’m an observer of human behaviour. Roles? I never want to be typecast or pigeon-holed for roles. And I think I’m enough of a weirdo to have a really broad personality to draw character inspirations from. I’ve been fortunate enough to have played some pretty different characters, from an ancient Japanese ghost princess in Xena, to a sexually promiscuous business woman in Outrageous Fortune, a geek in My Wedding And Other Secrets, a frustrated college grad

working in a donut store in Chicago in Underemployed, and a Thai mother suffering a nervous breakdown in Top Of The Lake. I love the challenge of embodying any role that stretches me. Underemployed? “Underemployed is a hopeful exploration into what it’s like to be a young grad looking for employment in today’s stretched economy. My character has the last line of the first episode: ‘If life is about making money, then we’re all screwed. But if life is about living, then none of my friends are underemployed’. That kind of summarises the vibe of the show. It’s written with the view that five friends share the belief that the reason for living is to love and create. But fear drives them to make mistakes. The creator, Craig Wright, is a genius and is quoted as saying, ‘The answer to the problems of our age is not money, it is purpose’. It’s really ballsy to be that optimistic in a climate where the self-aware irony of HBO’s Girls is considered cool. I guess we’re terribly uncool but it’s a message that really resonated with me. And I loved being a part of that. Shooting in the beautiful city of Chicago was pretty dream too. Aspirations? “I aspire to be a better person, to give more, to know and understand more. To make interesting contributions to society. To push myself creatively and take risks. To enjoy every moment and find time to stand still. And most importantly, to effect the change I want to see. I also really want to work on a heartachingly beautiful film this year and sink my teeth into a meaty drama role. Passions? I’m a foodie and love finding some exciting new dish or place to eat. I love smells a lot. You’ll find me in any apothecary, cataloguing smells in my brain. One day I’d like to make my own perfume line. I’ve done some organic perfumery courses. I love to get out in nature and go for a hike in the wilderness. I love photography and the use of images to evoke emotions. I have a real desire to understand the true environmental impact of all that we do. Information should be readily available to consumers about what goes into fueling our demand for products and our consumption habits. It’s scary how easy it is for us to pretend nothing is wrong with the way we’re living.

Los Angeles “Los Angeles is a weird place for me. I’ve been here several times in the last few years and it’s never been a comfy fit. Most often it seems to have coincided with emotional chaos in my life and that’s inked an unfair memory sense to this place. I find the driving and the urban sprawl depressing. And I actually think the desert isn’t my place. I miss the lushness of home. Also, I find it weird that most of the city is involved in the entertainment business. I love the claustrophobia of New York City. The jam packed adrenalin of jumping on public transport and striking up a conversation with a street bum or a Wall Street banker. The chance of serendipitous meetings. The rough and ready character of separate areas. I’ll find my feet in L.A. eventually but it’s not a first choice for me. Jane Campion? “Working with Jane Campion was an incredible experience. Knowing her work and having heard rumours about how she liked to work, I was terrified of her. I was able to do a rehearsal session with her and it was uncanny how much she strove to seek the true essence of the scene. She would improvise a scene and talk through what was happening as the actors took on board the direction and improvised the lines our character may have said. She was never negative or critical but somehow encouraged us to keep pushing till we’d found a true state. My work in her project was highly emotional and challenging, and as a director she really looked after me and made sure I was paced to deliver the best performance. It was a real honour. Experiences? Experiences are the stuff of life really, aren’t they? Collecting them seems to be what life is about. I often forget how offbeat my life has been. I’ve worked all over the world and met all kinds of people. I’ve had to shoot guns, drown, put on accents, dress up. No two days are ever the same. But on the flipside, I’m lucky to have maintained a normalcy. I like grocery shopping, cooking and talking to my friends who work as doctors and nurses. I’m just at home in a tiny tent with a gas cooker as I am in L.A. at a fancy restaurant. All I hope is that I can keep surprising myself with new experiences and continue to be grateful for all of them.

KATIE EVERINGHAM Who are you and what do you do?
I’m Katie and I play drums in LION EYES and do guitar and vocals in a side project called VEINS. What’s the most rebellious thing you’ve ever done?
I stopped being a rebel when I was like 14, so my rebellious heyday is a little hard to remember but I do remember lighting some fires in the sinks in the science room and swearing at teachers. Do you consider yourself an outsider? I think it depends who im around, I don’t really feel like an outsider because i guess like most people i surround myself with people who i have at least a little bit in common with. i guess i wouldn’t be surprised if other people perceive me as odd. That’s probably the case for most people though. What most fucks you off at the moment? At the moment I’m so tired from uni/work etc that almost everything is fucking me off, Three things you couldn’t live without. Coffee, computer, maybe drums. I feel like I’d get a little depressed if I never got to play them again.
 Drink of choice?
Mojito! Or beer. And coffee. Best gig you’ve played or seen? Fleetwood mac. Easy. Tears in my eyes when they opened with chains. Kick ass plans for the future? Record our next EP, hopefully play some shows around the country and potentially Australia in the near future. Enlightening message for the world? Everyone, just be nice to eachother. Or even just dont be shit to each other. Not a particularly creative message but everything would be way more chill if people just did it.

Drink of choice? Butterbeer, in concept. Whats your biggest achievement to date? Dropping out of art school. Best gig you’ve played or seen? The Dirty Projectors hopscotched over anything I’d ever seen. The best gig I’ve played is every Boycrush gig I get to participate in. Kick ass plans for the future? Go quiet ‘til an album comes out. What’s the most rebellious thing you’ve ever done? I stopped going to church. Do you consider yourself an outsider? It really depends who I am around - at the supermarket yes, in the company of friends, no. What most fucks you off at the moment? Aaron Carter’s Twitter. Three things you couldn’t live without? Ajax spray n wipe, semi permanent black hair dye, Angostura bitters. Drink of choice? Whiskey old fashioned (Makers Mark bourbon, a sugar cube, Angostura bitters, lots of ice, ten minutes and some orange rind). Best gig you’ve played or seen? Sharpie Crows played a great vinyl release show at Whammy Bar recently, which reminds me I still need to buy a copy! I think they are the most interesting live band around at the moment. Kick ass plans for the future? Finishing a trilogy of concept albums, all of them good - possibly killing off my character near the end of part three. Enlightening message for the world? Get off the internet.

Snuck into a half built house in central Greece (Meteora) to sit on the roof and drink wine. It had a better view of these crazy massive rocks with monasteries on them. Do you consider yourself an outsider? Not sure, I guess its easy to blend in, but you can still feel alone and be surrounded by people sometimes. What most fucks you off at the moment? Well, lots but, people getting angry about our current government who didnt bother to vote in the election - lame. Three things you couldn’t live without? Family, Friends, Cigarettes. Drink of choice? Sakura Daiquiri from Ebisu or Vodka Lime soda Best gig you’ve seen? Watching the Cure / Radiohead Kick ass plans for the future? Kicking lots of ass! Obviously! But this is a process and I like the idea of achieving something big every day. Do you consider yourself an outsider? I don’t really consider anything. What’s the most rebellious thing you’ve ever done?
The other day some friends and I went to a cafe and ditched it to go to Carl’s Junior instead. Risky Business. What most fucks you off at the moment? Bitter and resentful customer service representatives? Three things you couldn’t live without?
Blood money power. What do you drink? Beer. Best gig you've played or seen? I remember it was 2008. I had just graduated college and the air was sweet with the promise of summer. On the eve, my best friend and I serendipitously ended up at an Of Montreal concert at the San Francisco Bath House. It was a magical night. The End. Kick ass plans for the future? I'm planning on touring NZ and the hopefully the US with the band and my project and then also finding my way to Taiwan to "kick it" with my bf. Enlightening message for the world? *posi*productive*vibez*

I’m Courtney, staff writer at UNDERTHERADAR and ALWAYSSSOMETIMESANYTIME. Booker of bands at CASSETTE NINE.
Whats your biggest achievement to date? Um, I don’t think I’ve really achieved anything particularly special but maybe starting Always Sometimes Anytime. It’s amazing to work on a project with a bunch of talented people and see it come full circle together: from concept to a real, working, ongoing thing. What’s the most rebellious thing you’ve ever done?
I’m actually a total nerd these days so the most rebellious thing I’ve done would have involved alcohol and my 16-year-old self. High school rebel.
Do you consider yourself an outsider? Considering the innumerable niches modern technology has allowed for, I don’t really think anyone is an outsider these days. If you’re into something you’re going to be able to find someone else who’s into it too - regardless of how creepy-weirdoutside of the ‘norm’ it is. What most fucks you off at the moment? Vapid, irrelevant content on new media outlets. Three things you couldn’t live without?
Aside from the things that I literally couldn’t live without (you know, water et al), and the metaphorical things that most celebrities answer this question with (liberty, freedom, clichés) I’m pretty easy to please: friends, music, books (Jonathan Franzen for life).
 Drink of choice? Red wine.
Best gig you’ve seen? Swooniest: Jarvis Cocker at the Wellington Town Hall. Dance moves for ever and ever. Most memorable: Liars at a festival in Monterrey, Mexico in the middle of the night during their ‘Sisterworld’ tour. Like being in ‘The Blair Witch Project’ or something. Kick ass plans for the future? I wish I could be like “in one year I will be here, and in five years I will be there” but I don’t really have a plan. Like at all. Somebody give me one OK thanks. Enlightening message for the world? Ira Glass has something much more profound to say than I do: click here to see.

ROZY THOMAS What do you do and what are you doing here? I’m Rozy, i’m the designer for clothing brand NYMPHETS, and the organiser of SnakeFest. What’s the most rebellious thing you’ve ever done? Pee’d in the shower. Do you consider yourself an outsider and why? Yeah, paranoia or reasonable suspicion. What most fucks you off at the moment? Counter productive questions, Three things you couldn’t live without? I don’t understand this question. Poison of choice? Humbert Humbert. Best gig you’ve seen? The ones where they play harmonica. Enlightening message for the world? Lie lots, its Bokonist.

HDSPNS

HANA AOAKE

What do you do and what are you doing here? We are 4 friends playing music together at the final cha-hoo for one of the best venues in Auckland. What’s the most rebellious thing you’ve ever done? Ashed on a baby. Do you consider yourselves outsiders? No, we are part of a big family. What most fucks you off at the moment? The TPPA. Three things you couldn’t live without? Thesis, Antithesis and Synthesis. Poison of choice? Rich Boy. Best gig you’ve played or seen? SZO SZO MODERN Enlightening message for the world? D.I.T.

What do you do and what are you doing here? I’m Hana and I’m a performance and installation artist. At Snakefest I did the second part of my ‘Blocks’ series, which was based on the disruption between the audience and the performer, the possibility of failure and to ‘dance not in the space, but to dance the space.’ What’s the most rebellious thing you’ve ever done? I broke out of the girl’s dormitories at boarding school to drink vodka and go skinny-dipping. Do you consider yourself an outsider? I think so, by the mere fact that I’m a part Maori, female performance artist. Being a performance artist means that my art is classified as a being a secondary art in comparison to say more ‘high art’ mediums, such as painting or traditional means of sculpture. What most fucks you off at the moment? At the moment I am particularly pissed off with the

www.facebook.com/HDSPNS headspins.bandcamp.com/

inequalities between male and female artists. When you look through art historical documents from the 20th century the female contribution to modern art isn’t visible and even now male artists are somehow seen to be better artists, because they have a penis. Three things you couldn’t live without?,My friends, family and books Poison of choice? I can’t give up smoking cigarettes? I don’t really have many other poisons, though I do like mulled wine. Best gig you’ve played or seen? Probably Die Antwoord at Big Day Out. They were amazing. Enlightening message for the world? “History is as light as individual life, light as a feather, as dust swirling into the air, as whatever will no longer exist tomorrow.” –Milan Kundera, The Unbearable lightness of being. bellaandmadeline.blogspot.co.nz

Some are stranger and more foreign than others. Oscar Wilde once said, “We’re all the in the gutter but some of us are looking at the stars.” I like to think I’m one of the star gazers he is talking about. What most fucks you off at the moment? The lack of empathy and compassion in the world. People that have to prove to others who they are and not knowing who they are themselves. Rude and judgemental people that have nothing nice to say about anyone else. People that gain happiness by putting others in misery. Three things you couldn’t live without? Nail polish, my closet filled with awesome prints and my cellphone!

JO UGG What do you do and what are you doing here? We’re CAVEMEN and we spend our days playing Rock 'n' Roll and drinking beer, and loitering here together (minus our drummer) at Snakefest. What’s the most rebellious thing you’ve ever done? When we played our first and only show in Wellington we got pass out drunk afterwards and awoke to find our hotel room trashed; the art had been defaced, a thick layer of vomit covered the floor. Do you consider yourself an outsider? We're outsiders because our combined IQ is below the average persons due to spending our youth playing brick wars. What most fucks you off at the moment? Everything... Three things you couldn’t live without? Beer, Babes and Ciggies. Poison of choice? Strychnine Best gig you’ve played or seen? We played some of our most fun and rockin' gigs at Snakepit and by far the best gig we've seen was Guitar Wolf. Enlightening message for the world? I came to see some of my favourite local bands and to celebrate the fact that snakepit existed. What’s the most rebellious thing you’ve ever done? I kind of get really anxious about breaking rules, probably going to and playing at r18 shows when I was underage, once I had to hide from the cops in the toilet for an hour. Do you consider yourself an outsider? I forget that I am because I usually only converse with weirdos and/or people who get how I am but then I flashback to the alienation I felt at highschool, so yes. What most fucks you off at the moment? Mindless or ill-informed voting, the common misconception

that society has reached gender equality, people who say gay when they mean bad, having to wake up early, and being bored. Three things you couldn’t live without? Food, socks, and my blankie. Poison of choice? Coopers pale ale, sapporo or any japanese beer. Best gig you’ve played or seen? Can't say played cause i'm extremely self-critical and pessimistic but for seen maybe Xiu Xiu, both times i've seen them it's been amazing, last year was cool, he used mentos and a sling shot to hit a gong it was so badass, didn't even come off as a gimmick, seemed completely justified (it made a really good gong sound and it was out of arms reach). Enlightening message for the world? Help me i'm bored.

What do you do and what are you doing here? I’m an actress on Shortland Street and I’ve been writing for this issue of 1AM. I went to Snakefest to see cool bands and support my friends. What’s the most rebellious thing you’ve ever done? Stole a bra from farmers when i was 13. Do you consider yourself an outsider? Yup, In the sense that all my friends are musicians and i work on a soap opera. What most fucks you off at the moment? People who take advantage. Three things you couldn’t live without? Avocado on toast, wine, good company.Poison of choice? Red wine Best gig you’ve seen? Mint chicks tunnel gig in Devonport 2010. Enlightening message for the world? Be kind

What do you do and what are you doing here? I take photos and I am taking photos. What's the most rebellious thing you've ever done? Can I pass on that? Do you consider yourself an outsider? No because I don't want to be self indulgent. What most fucks you off at the moment? Sexual assault. Three things you couldn't live without? Music, toothbrush, Pearl McGlashan. Poison of choice? Salt. Best gig you've seen? Thee Oh Sees was pretty amazing... But best ever would be the Rackets double EP release at Scout Hall in 2010. Enlightening message for the world? Be nice, work hard, don't tell lies.

THISTLE BROWN What do you do and what are you doing here? Textile Designer - here to farewell the premises. What’s the most rebellious thing you’ve ever done? ahhhhhhh???? Do you consider yourself an outsider? I don’t really think to much of being an insider or outsider. What most fucks you off at the moment? The superbowl performance could of been longer. Three things you couldn’t live without? My pug, good friends and good Coffee. Poison of choice? Is this a perfume question or alcohol question? Best gig you’ve seen? AC/DC western springs Enlightening message for the world? Kiss the future, fuck the past.

TASH VAN SCHAARDENBURG

What do you do and what are you doing here? I do nothing. I wanted to take Tash to Snakepit before it closed. What’s the most rebellious thing you’ve ever done? Hung out in a Catholic chapel in my underwear with my girlfriend and three other naked people. Do you consider yourself an outsider? I spend a lot of time indoors, so not really. What most fucks you off at the moment? My parents won’t buy me chickens. Three things you couldn’t live without? Disney princesses, boobs and wonka nerds. Poison of choice? Poison Ivy from Batman. Best gig you’ve seen? I once saw the Saddle Club live in a mall. Enlightening message for the world? Meat is murder.

What do you do and what are you doing here? I'm a Fine Arts student at Ilam in Christchurch and I just came along cause I heard it was gonna be a good time. What’s the most rebellious thing you’ve ever done? When I was six I decided I wanted to model in the sandpit wearing nothing but at least thirty snails. It was pretty gnarly stuff. Do you consider yourself an outsider? I suppose, just because I have some very different priorities and concerns to a lot of my peers. Though that can be isolating, in other ways it grabs people's attention. I don't know if I'm being sucked in or drawing them out though. What most fucks you off at the moment? People who 'love' animals and eat them too. Three things you couldn’t live without? Scissors, good food and my vagina. Poison of choice? Gin & lift. Best gig you’ve played or seen? Every time we have a party with the local bands playing in the lounge. Enlightening message for the world? People are equal in their basic wish for peace and happiness so stop acting like shitheads.
