THE WORLD’S MOST ICONIC SWIMWEAR BRAND JANTZEN has joined forces with Australian designer Danielle Wallace to create a Limited Edition collection A Place in the Sun. Instantly recognisable by the clasic “Diving Girl” logo, Jantzen invented the swinsuit as we know it, morphing their 100% wool sporting garments into bathers. By the 1930s the company started to promote the idea of the swimsuit as opposed to the bathing suit with the tag-line ‘The suit that changed bathing to swimming’. Long associated with Hollywood glamour, their legendary advertising campaigns have featured curvy icons such as Marilyn Monroe, Esther Williams, and Elizabeth Taylor, as well as Farrah Fawcett, Princess Diana and more recently Carolyn Murphy. Bringing that glamour back to the modern Australian woman Wallace says “It is nice to be collectively on the forefront of the new trend in curvy girls in the spirit of photographer Steven Meisel and models such as Kate Upton and Robyn Lawley. My inspiration for the capsule collection has come from my favourite iconic hotels: The Beverly Hills, The Royal Hawaiian, and Lake Como’s Villa D’Este and swimsuits throughout the eras. These are your flattering and glamorous dress up swimsuits for poolside or Riviera”. JANTZENS A Place in the Sun capsule collection by Danielle Wallace is available exclusively through David Jones in Australia.

PUBERTY BLUES is a coming of age series set in the sun and the 70s, making star ISABELLE CORNISH a perfect choice for our ‘Summer Lovin’ Australasian beach culture inspired issue. ISABELLE shot on Bondi Beach by TRAVIS GRACE. Interview by BARNEY MCDONALD.

IF SHE WASN’T SO NATURALLY beautiful, vivacious and photogenic, it might be easy to dismiss Newcastle-based actress Isabelle Cornish’s attempts to follow in older sister Abbie’s esteemed footsteps. After all, just because Abbie is intensely talented doesn’t make Isabella’s fortunes in the acting world any more certain. There are numerous successful acting siblings in the Hollywood system, but remarkably few from this part of the world. A smaller industry, with fewer opportunities, means a little luck and a lot of talent will only get you so far. To go further, that special ingredient that we won’t label the X-factor (thanks to reality TV, that term is forever tainted), something extra special has to radiate, and it can’t be drawn from basking in the glow of your sister’s achievements.

Isabelle Cornish makes no bones about following her sister’s lead, frankly admitting in one magazine feature recently that everything her sister did, she wanted to do, especially after seeing Abbie’s performances in Somersault, Candy and Elizabeth: The Golden Age. Although her own acting credits are still comparatively lean, with a guest role on Rescue Special Ops in 2010, a fourepisode extended guest spot on Home & Away in 2011 and a recurring role in Puberty Blues as gang girl Vicky, it isn’t difficult to imagine her nailing art-house film roles where a quirky yet magnetic beauty is required. On the surface, Isabelle possesses the kind of luminescent looks that helped transform young actresses like Alicia Silverstone, Lindsay Lohan and Amanda Seyfried into Hollywood starlets.

She could easily go down that route. However, if she is in tune with Abbie’s career trajectory, playing challenging characters in credible films beckons, meaning the Cornish name will continue to remain synonymous with the kind of performances and productions that make film such a magical artistic medium. Will Isabelle Cornish be the new Golden Girl of the Silver Screen? It’s an exciting prospect, not least of all for this energetic, easygoing 19-year-old with the bee-stung lips, opal-round eyes and body tailor-made for Australia’s sundrenched beach culture. A decade younger than her sister, it would seem that time is on her side, alongside a string of qualities that might just see her make it on her own merits. Now wouldn’t that be something. >>>

Anyone ever compared your look to Alicia Silverstone? I’ve had a thousand people tell me I resemble Alicia Silverstone! How are you similar to your sister Abbie? We like a lot of the same things; talk and dress the same. Is your agency on the money when they describe you as a “pocket rocket”? I hope so. Pocket rocket is a super cool description! Your first film was a short shot by Kiwi photographer Max Doyle. What do you remember about that shoot? I loved that shoot! I remember wearing an arm cast for a week to school for the role when my arm wasn’t even broken! I made up lots of stories of how it happened. What’s his film Arc about? It’s the story of a young teenager, Sophie, falling for a boy for the first time while staying with her brother in the city. Your other roles are all in TV shows. Are you keen to make the transition to feature films? I am. I love film a lot. Everything about it is amazing. Anything in the pipeline? I’ll be going to L.A. in January for pilot season, which should be a great adventure. Was it obvious or inevitable you would follow in your sister’s footsteps, from modeling to acting? I don’t think so. I never thought I was going to be an actress or a model until I started doing drama

classes, then wondered, ‘What’s next?’ Has she shared any advice/ warnings/techniques/tactics? She’s always there to give me advice when I need it. What’s your favourite performance of hers? I love Candy. It’s such a beautiful film. She’s very inspiring and brilliant in that role opposite Heath Ledger. Are you confident or shy? Both, depending on the situation, but I’m very chatty once I start talking [laughs]. What’s your safe/happy place? Being at home with my family. Have you had an idyllic life so far? I’ve had so much fun but there have been some long and hard times. When I was younger I’d travel six hours to Sydney and home to Newcastle for work and auditions during my school years. A lot of major Aussie actors have started on daily soaps, but you just did the four episodes on Home & Away. Are you glad you didn’t get absorbed into that world for long? Home & Away was great. It was really cool to learn how to work on such a fast moving show. I was in school so four episodes was enough for me at the time. You’re now a series regular on Puberty Blues. For those of us who haven’t seen it, what’s it about? It’s a story about two teenagers,

Sue and Debbie, growing up and coming of age in Cronulla in the 1970s. What’s your character Vicky like? Vicky is very cool. She is witty and has a dry sense of humour. She goes through a lot in the second series, which was really great to experience. What does the winner of PETA’s ‘Sexiest Vegetarian’ in Australia this year win and what do you have to do? They’re a funny one. I didn’t even know I was nominated! It was an awesome thing to win. I had to do some interviews. Any other causes you’re passionate about? I’m passionate about animal cruelty, helping kids with disadvantages and many others. I’m hoping to go overseas next year and volunteer for a few months with World Vision. What pisses you off? Flies in my face while I’m trying to sleep! That is the worst! What turns you on? (Just kidding… this isn’t Playboy) [Laughs] I love Messina gelato and raw chocolate. What’s next? Christmas, summer, beach, fun! I’m off to Byron Bay tonight with my boyfriend Mitch and our two ducklings, which should be fun.

Puberty Blues season 2 starts february 2014. watch trailer here.

1AM TOOK THE FOUR SASSY LADIES from She Rex out on the town for a night of photos, dumplings, Chinese beer, Puppet Skelton’s dancing to ‘Gangnam style’ – and a waiter conveniently named ‘Rex’. In-between stuffing our faces with dumplings we asked the girls a few questions about themselves and the band. Where do you guys hail from originally? She Rex: Sydney. Nikkita: Although I did move to the central coast when I was in year eight until year twelve. As soon as I turned eighteen I moved back to Sydney though. And then what happened? Did you study at Uni? Nikkita: No, I've never been to Uni. Oh apart from the two gigs we did at Sydney University haha. Darcy: Oh I've also been to uni! I went to one of my friends uni classes once… You snuck into the university? Darcy: Yeah I snuck in. I learned a lot, now I'm really smart haha! Nikkita: My Dad actually ended up moving to L.A after I moved back to work as a producer so I.. Tash: Wait your Dad’s a producer? Nikkita: Yeah he produces music for um... eh… XXX movies. Tash: Does he? Haha! Nikkita: Yeah I don’t have a problem with it, it’s still music baby. Haha! Wait, do they even have music? Nikkita: Yeah! Haha. (Nikkita starts humming the instrumental to Never gonna dance again by George Michael). ALL: Haha! How did SHE REX come together? Tash: Nikkita and I had met a few times previously and realised that she (Nikkita) was a rapper and I was a drummer and we both really wanted to start a band so we did! Then we found

Sarah through a friend and thought she was amazing. And then we all decided we needed a guitarist so we put an ad out for auditions but no one really stood out and we kept getting lots of late night phone calls at 3am from drunk guys singing to us on the phone asking if they could join the band! Nikkita: We also had an audition with one girl who said she could play the guitar but when she auditioned, she didn’t actually know how to play the guitar! Haha. And then we found Darcy! Darcy: Yeah I was actually looking to find a band, so it was perfect. What’s your favourite all time song that you wish you had written? Tash: I know it’s cliché, but Stairway To Heaven by Led Zeppelin. Nikkita: Yeah or Killing In The Name Of by Rage Against The Machine. We actually do a cover of it; it’s such a simple yet powerful song. All: Yeah Killing In The Name Of by Rage Against The Machine. Who do you consider is currently the best commercial pop star and why? All: Beyoncé! Sarah: Or Lorde. Nikkita: Beyoncé is the goddess or goddess’s. She’s got this ass... and she’s just a genius. Tash: Yeah she’s a Diva. What’s the first CD you ever purchased? Sarah: What’s The Story Morning Glory by Oasis. Tash: Oh same! We are then interrupted by our waiter ‘Rex’ (ironically) who serves us all prawn dumplings before Tash asks him to join us for dumplings in which he politely replies that he can’t as he has to work… Nikkita then proceeds to ask what he is doing after work to which he answers “up to you”. All: Haha!

Nikkita: that’s good, I’m going to use that! Ok back to the question... Nikkita: oh yeah my first CD wasn't a CD but a tape! “Diamonds & Peals” by Prince. Darcy: Ah I think mine was Destiny’s Child. Describe the most vivid dream you’ve had lately. Tash: I had a weird dream the other night where I ‘v-jazzled’ myself. What do you mean ‘v-jazzled’? Tash: You know how you bejewel a phone, well I bejewelled my vagina. All: Hahahaha. Darcy: What does that mean? You know how dreams are supposed to mean something? Well I wonder what that means? Sarah: I had a dream while we were on tour that I met Bjork and we became best buddies, it was pretty awesome. What's your favourite thing about summer? Nikkita: Being a nudist. Bras are shit. What are your plans for summer? Nikkita: We are doing a "Beach" tour with Kingswood where we go to a different beach every day and play in a different venue every night for like 10 days in a row. A sorry in advance to our inevitably traumatized skin cells and poisoned livers. Where is your favourite place to spend the summer? Nikkita: Anywhere but my day job. Tell me about your latest EP? Nikkita: Its out now! 4 girls, 5 songs, multiple genres. Sweet! (see below). What’s next for SHE REX? Nikkita: We are currently looking into moving to L.A early next year and recording an album. listen to SHE REX by SHE REX on Soundcloud download SHE REX on iTunes watch SHE REX on YouTube

SURF FRIENDS are the sizzle of your sausages on the barbie this summer! they burn, baby!

story & photography BARNEY MCDONALD fashion KATE LAWRY thanks to BEN HOWE @ ARCH HILL & FLYING NUN RECORDS

Brad and Pete both wear jeans by INSIGHT, Chuck Taylors by CONVERSE.

SURF FRIENDS ARE THE SOUND of summer. They could also be the sound of student parties, manic drives to the mountain to snowboard, crazy adventures to weird places and everything worthwhile in between. Aucklanders Brad Coley (vocals, guitar, keys, machines and mayhem) and Peter Westmoreland (vocals, bass and keyboard) have energy to burn. And burn it they do on their second album, Endorphins, and on stage, where the duo throws every ounce of energy into their performance, leaping and playing like there is no tomorrow. Maybe in the world of pop music there isn’t. It’s all about living for today, dreaming about tomorrow, while putting everything you have into the moment. The pair of friends, who indeed surf together and have done so since meeting at school in their early teens, are energy junkies. Yet they put it out rather than suck it up, staking their reputation on the “full froth” experience. In other words, they don’t do things by halves. They’re always “crankin”, “full charge”, “gnar gnar!” And they wouldn’t have it any other way. Recently signed to seminal New Zealand label Flying Nun, world famous for such bands as The Clean (major inspiration), The Chills, The Bats, Snapper, Straitjacket Fits, Look Blue Go Purple, Bird Nest Roy, The Verlaines and just about every other great Kiwi band of note, the pair is on the ride of their life. They’re “shelving” and other handy terms included on the sleeve of Endorphins. Merging psychedelic rock with a sensitive pop sensibility, they craft fuzzy, sparkly tunes that have a touch of the anthemic to them. And they’re not shy about acknowledging their surf roots, thus all the definitions of surf lingo on the sleeve and song titles like The Sea,

Breakin, Sea Outside and, of course, Summer. Which makes them ideal for an issue of 1AM devoted to surf and beach culture. There are 10 tracks on Surf Friends’ album. They like to hang 10. A coincidence? You be the judge. What got you guys into the music you play? Brad Coley: I guess a merger of songs off surf films, Blink 182, the Beach Boys and the discovery of The Clean. These factors inspired the purchase of a guitar and the desire to not learn the solo to Nothing Else Matters but write original music that may not be technically correct . Peter Westmoreland: My dad has always cranked rock ‘n’ roll and played his six-string and 12-string guitar. It’s how it all started and continued. It’s always been about having fun. It’s less about learning the technical, rather just jamming it out. How did you meet? Brad: At school when we were like 12 or even younger maybe. We always knew each other but I guess we became really good friends in the later years of high school. We became full surfing ‘froth-dogs’ just after school finished. Mainly because we all had our drivers licences, which meant we can access surf easier. What’s your background? Brad: Pete was born in South Africa and moved here when he was a young cat. I’m a local Auckland chap. Besides music, what do you do? Brad: We’re both pretty busy. I study and work as a quantity surveyor in Auckland and also do triathlon/ endurance events, so I’m training

5-plus days a week most of the time. Pete is an accountant so he’s pretty busy with that, plus he’s currently studying to be a chartered accountant, which can get hectic. This means we’re pretty organised dudes to make this all work. We have a pretty set schedule and every nook and cranny we fit in surfing and music. We max it out! Did it take long to find your sound? Brad: Yeah, I guess it actually did take a year or so for Surf Friends to truly emerge. We originally were a threepiece, playing more folky/chilled music that started to slowly get more postpunky I guess. We had a tour booked around New Zealand and all this crazy stuff happened. Our drummer got really sick and Pete bombed this massive hill on his skateboard and broke his wrist. We never quit anything so Pete played a keyboard through some drone pedals and I started using drum machines, samples and loops and that’s where it really took off. The tour went super well so we basically stuck with the setup, adding in more instruments where we felt it suited. Our setup now is pretty epic. Pete: It was one crazy long hill where I broke my wrist. The keyboard emerged in that tour because I could play basslines on it with one hand while the other was in a splint-type cast. I’m back on the bass guitar now but still play bass keyboard on a few tracks. What does surfing mean to you? Brad: Everything. It’s more than exercise and a sport, it’s a release and a meditation. It’s a place similar to playing music where there are no more thoughts, just this moment. >>>

UT” O T I G N I AMM J T S U J R ATHE R , L A C I N ECH T E H T G N LEARNI Pete: Adventure with mates and being in the moment. It’s the best feeling amping for a wave and the salt-water froth feeling that lasts long after the mission out there. Where do you like to surf? Brad: We both love to surf the Coromandel. It’s a slight mission to get there from Auckland, which makes it that much more special when you score it pumping. The beaches are all amazing. White sand, clear blue water and a lot of the spots can be uncrowded much of the time, especially in winter. Pete: Raglan has an amazing left-hand point break and is a really cool town. And after work surfs at Piha when daylight saving kicks in. The Far North, east and west coasts, have some epic waves and a different climate. Surfed overseas? Brad: Yeah, surfed Aussie like a zillion times from Sydney north to Noosa. It pumps over there! Pete’s surfed in South Africa and Aussie. I’m finally going to Indonesia next year. It’s well overdue! Pete: I’m hoping to get back to Aussie for a wave soon and Indonesia is definitely overdue! Is the beach in your blood? Brad: Yeah, definitely. We both grew up around the ocean, though I think Pete had waves close by in South Africa whereas I had the beaches in the East Coast Bays so I’d have to wait for a 40-knot onshore and go froth on a stormy! Pete: Yeah, the waves were pretty close when I was younger in South Africa. I surfed quite a bit from a little grom. I remember waking up super early on Saturdays and heading out with my brother and dad to our local while mum was still asleep. My

brother and I would hang out with our dogs and chase the trains that tracked along the beach while my dad surfed a reef that broke super close to the shore. We sail as a family heaps too so I’ve grown up at the beach and in the ocean. Ever been on Piha Rescue? Brad: Thankfully no! Piha is a dangerous place. Go swim in the safe bays of the North Shore if you’re not a strong swimmer. Don’t got learn when its 8 to 10 feet at Piha! Pete: Fortunately not, but what they do is amazing and it shows how wild the west coast can be. Did you always dream of signing to Flying Nun? Brad: Yeah, definitely. All the Flying Nun stuff has influenced our lives. We would actually be different people without Flying Nun! It’s a crazy thing when you dream of something since you were 14 and then it actually happens. It’s surreal! We really need to update our vision boards now and look to the future! Pete: Brad really introduced me to Flying Nun and its epic bands and it became a dream from that point. What are your favourite Flying Nun bands? Brad: The Clean, The Verlaines, Skeptics, Double Happys, Able Tasmans, The Mint Chicks, The Pin Group, t54, Grayson Gilmour. Everything to do with the label is pretty much amazing! Pete: The Clean, Mint Chicks, Skeptics, t54 and Grayson Gilmour. I went to t54’s album release gig last night. So good! What about other bands? Brad: We love Deerhunter, No Age, Beach Fossils, Real Estate,

Japandroids. Basically all those bands that are playing the Pitchfork music festival in the USA. There are also a bunch of local bands we love as well: The Prophet Hens, Ghost Wave, Surf City, Pine, Die! Die! Die!, Rackets, Full Moon Fiasco... The list goes on! We love Aussie bands like The Twerps, Dune Rats and Dick Diver too! Chuffed with the album? Brad: We are stoked with it. It’s the most time we have spent on an album ever, which pretty much meant the album is the top 10 tracks from the 60-plus we originally had. We had big help from producer Nick Roughan who put in many ideas and really helped to make this album as epic as it is. It’s also a total honour to have our hero David Kilgour from The Clean playing guitar on a couple of tracks! Pete: Super stoked with the album. It’s been heaps of fun making it and a really cool experience working with Nick. It was epic to tour it round New Zealand and get some good feedback, which is great. Pete thanks God in the liner notes and Brad thanks another God, producer Nick Roughan. Who is more omnipotent? Brad: Good question [laughs]. In terms of a practical input into the album, Nick has the power. But under Pete’s beliefs it would be fair to say Nick was created by God to produce our album. So that means God has the ultimate power! Pete: Nicely put Brad. Team effort! Are you fans of Nick’s former band The Skeptics? Brad: Yeah we are and we only really started getting into it since meeting him, There’s an amazing documentary out called Sheen of Gold made by this legend dude called Simon Ogston. >>>

“WE DON’ T REALLY It’s all about the Skeptics and is done super well! Are you quite religious Pete, or quietly religious? Pete: You probably wouldn’t find me on the corner preaching but I’m always up for a yarn if someone is interested. I have a strong belief and am a person to do my thing, so hopefully it’s seen in that light and encouraging to everyone. Brad: From my point of view, Pete is super religious and fully committed to Christianity. But at the same time, he’s never tried to convert me or make me go to church. And I haven’t seen him go door knocking yet but I fully respect his beliefs and he respects mine. Kiwi surfers are renowned for booze, pot and girls, not necessarily in that order. Does that hold true for either of you? Brad: Not really. Maybe a few years back but these days we don’t really drink at all, don’t do drugs, but love girls! I’m now a taken man, four years deep with my girlfriend Saskia. But Pete’s a girl frother! He’s always on the hunt for the perfect lady [laughs]. Pete: [Laughs] You never know who you’ll meet round the next corner. I enjoy a beer with mates but not interested in pot. Girls are the winner for sure! What does the album title ‘Endorphins’ mean to you? Brad: Just charging full steam ahead. The feeling of enlightenment you get from just going for it. Whether it’s running 40-plus kilometres, playing a live show, surfing Whangamata, pumping or eating a roaring hot curry at your local Indian joint, it’s the same buzz! Pete: Full froth! The feeling after a fourhour surf in pumping waves!

DRINK AT ALL,

Any good stories from the album tour? Brad: Milford Sounds was loose as! We played after their local pentathlon [kayak, swim, bike, run, beer skull/ rotten banana eat off]. One of the teams was short a swimmer so I swam the glacier water in my underwear and froze my nads off! Our team won so it kicked the show off pretty well. Everyone got in their underwear. It’s the only show we’ve ever played in just our underwear and we played a two-and-a-half-hour set! In Greymouth, Pete was doing colossal air jumps over people between couches. Insane! Pete: Definitely Milford Sounds and Greymouth! And Dunedin was amazing, playing with David Kilgour. He’s a legend! Of all the expressions you explain in the liner notes, which one do you use most often? Brad: Frothing for both of us for sure! Do you feel part of a particular music scene at the moment? Brad: Maybe a little bit in Auckland for sure. But I feel we’re still an outsider. We can crank an alternative gig but can still appeal to Joe Public playing on the street in Nelson or on the Interislander ferry! Have you attempted your own cover of Lorde’s single Royals? Brad: Pete does every night before bed! Pete: Nah, we haven’t got to it yet, but I’ve found myself singing that tune a fair bit! She’s cool and from just round the corner where we’ve done a bunch of recording. It’s the cool thing about New Zealand. You meet so many of the people that are making the music, the people behind it. Everyone’s really chilled.

DON’T DO DRUGS,

What songs would you prefer to cover? Brad: We’ve only ever covered The Clean. That was the rule when we started. Pete: You can’t go wrong with that rule!

Up to anything interesting over the summer holidays? Brad: Going surfing way up the far north and in the Coromandel. Hoping for some cyclone swell! Pete: Going surfing too. There’s a bunch of us that froth all year on disappearing over the summer holidays to the far north, jumping between east and west coasts, sleeping in cars and on the beach and surfing all day! Where do you usually holiday? Brad: Whangamata in the Coromandel is probably the most solid base, but from there we normally end up anywhere from Dunedin to Spirit’s Bay, the most northern point of New Zealand. Pete: Whangamata, Raglan, Sandy Bay and the far north and its many spots. What’s next in the new year? Brad: We have so many new songs it’s just crazy. We need to finish and record them before we lose them. It happens! We’ll ideally rack up another 60-plus tracks then start looking at the next album. Pete: Recording and writing the next album. It’s one of my favourite parts, especially over summer when we’re surfing and hanging with mates heaps. It’s when we write our best. Good times! Surf Friends album Endorphins out now on Flying Nun.
