Kagan´s Cooperative Learning Strategies


Who is Spencer Kagan? Author of the theory of cooperative learning, currently very in vogue and with a great projection worldwide. What is cooperative learning? Is a didactic sequence of free and repeatable content. They are characterized by integrating steps designed to structure student interaction with curriculum content and activities that align with basic principles of interaction and learning. Three step interview Active listening and paraphrasing by the interviewer develops understanding and empathy for the thinking of the interviewee. Example: The topic is animals so the girls need to have roles of interviwer and interviewee and they ask each other to learn about the opinion of the other one.


Numbered heads together. The studetns are in groups and need to give an answer for a question that the teacher makes. Example: The topic is vegetables so the teacher asks how many vegetables do you know so together need to think how many they know and the answer.

Students work together to solve a problem or answer a question about an assigned reading. requires students to think individually about a topic or answer to a question and share ideas. Example: The topic is distribute so the children need to think how they can distribute the numbre 7 in differents ways so each student give one idea and they share it.


Find the fib Is a strategy that is used to engage and motivate students to write. It also builds classroom culture as students learn more about each other and their teacher through sharing their writing about themselves. Directions. The teacher writes six statements about him/herself. Example: For preschool the way we can aply this strategy is that the students make a draw of their selves and then she with the other students and tells them something about her/his.

Rally Robin Brainstorming or Rally Robin are a strategies when the class is divided into small groups of 4 to 6 students per group with one person appointed as the recorder. A question is posed by the teacher with many possible answers and students are given time to think about answers.

Example: They are looking at the care of the planet so the teacher asks them how we can take care of it and they have to do a brainstorm in small groups.


Roving Reporter

while students are working on projects or activities, one student from each team may, for a certain amount of time, be a “roving reporter� moving around the room to collect information from other teams that may be useful. Example: The students are working in groups about plants so one of each group go to the others to watch and take usul information.


Round Robin Is a brainstorming strategy where students are situated around a table in an academic discussion. Like other brainstorming sessions, students generate ideas on a specific topic or question.

Pairs Check This strategy works best with 4 member teams. Each team breaks up into two sets of pairs. Partner pairs are given a problem-solving worksheet. Each member of a pair takes a turn solving a problem while the other acts as coach, checking their work. Rally Coach Provides students with an opportunity to coach their peers through problems and questions. Students are paired together: one is partner A, and one is partner B. The students solve problems or answer questions aloud in pairs.
