Anintroduction Our nations first and foremost BMX magazine! Since ‘98, 2020 has been documenting the Australian BMX scene from the riders perspective. 100% independent, rider owned and operated, 2020 has become the dominant voice of the riders on these shores. Proudly produced entirely in Australia, 2020 is published quarterly, representing both the riders and the industry, bringing them together in a package that can stand on its own on the newsstand or the web against any BMX publication from around the globe. And for as long as we can remember 2020 has the notoriety of being the highest circulating BMX magazine in Australia, far outstripping both local and import mags.
Wherewe’reat Of course throwing the word magazine around at this point in time hasn’t been as glossy across the world as of late. Be it in BMX here in Australia or around the world in all publishing circles. But in this time of apparent doom and gloom for all things printed, we’ve been quietly working hard to prove the mainstream wrong, as have more than a few independent niché titles. In 2011, we made a move to a new distribution partner; Network Services. Since then, we’ve upped our sales in both Australia and New Zealand over the previous years, bucking the print trend of shrinking print sales. Network Services larger reach and better distribution to newsagents that can actually sell the magazine have really upped our game. Issue 42 (the Dane Searls issue, rest in peace.) saw 15000 print copies go out across Australia and New Zealand from our printer Offset Alpine here in Sydney. Combining sales from newsagents, bike stores, subscriptions (direct through us, Network and through www.isubscribe.com.au) along with New Zealand sales (thanks to TripleSix), we sold just shy of 10,000 copies. Making 2020v42 our best selling issue to date, taking out 2020v36 that featured both stickers and posters with the magazine. I see the solid sales of the magazine very closely linked to the direction of the magazine over the last eighteen months. Both in content and our change to the new offset matte paper. I’ve been pushing the assembled team of contributors onboard harder than ever and I like to think that the production, design, photography and written content is head and shoulders above everything we’ve ever produced before. And before I forget, once an issue is taken off sale, our remaining returns are farmed out to events, schools, coaching clinics, advertisers (mainly shops and distro’s) and readers who email/write in. I’m not a fan of wasting magazines I pay top dollar for. So as far as making sure your printed ad pages get to the people, I think we’re doing a damn good job.
Digital While our dedication to the print experience is still first and foremost, the digital age is here and we’ve been moving with the times. The addition of our digital news stand partner www.zinio.com over the last three years has meant 2020 is now going worldwide as a digital download available to read online on your computer, iPad or whatever tablet OS you choose. Since Xmas 2011, our sales have upped (to over 1200 for issue 42) after a very slow initial uptake as more and more people embrace this new way of reading magazines. It’s been a slow but steady growth over the last two years, but I believe that the future will see this as the dominant way of reading our, or for that matter any publication. Contact us to get a complimentary subscription to the future of publishing now. While we’re on the digital front, our www.issuu.com previews of new releases go viral every issue through the worlds leading online BMX media outlets (simply check our profile which now has over 274,000 readers). To add to the reach of Issuu, they have recently featured us on their landing page for sports and adventure magazines which has got us a huge traffic spike. And I’m glad to ad, that after a very long process, all issues prior to 2020v36 will be available to read for free online on the Issuu platform.
Web 2020bmxmag.com.au is the digital arm of 2020 BMX magazine. The new website is aiming to be the ‘go to site’ for any rider online looking for Australian BMX news, photography, web clips and information. Not content to simply repost everything that every other site posts (although we will do that, tagged appropriately of course), 2020bmxmag.com.au will generate premium content specifically for the web to enhance and expand the reading of the print and digital magazine along with the emerging 2020 DVD production venture. Professionally generated web clips, photos and editorial along with the latest news, info and products alongside, industry releases, member uploaded photos and videos will ensure 2020bmxmag.com.au is constantly updated and relevant to the returning reader.
DVD With the success of 2011’s DVD release ‘Everyday is a Saturday’, 2012 will see Troy Charlesworth and 2020 dropping the next DVD installment, ‘Thats Whats Up’. The plan? More riders, more locations and more riding that puts Australian riding on the worldwide map. The production will give the world an insight into both Australian BMX culture and the riding that is progressing forward at an unstoppable rate on these shores. Along with continuing the mix tape like feel that EDIAS brought to the table, there will be three full sections that feature three of the most progressive street riders Australia has to offer: Liam Zingbergs, Jerry Vandervalk and Mike Vockenson. We have more DVD projects in the pipeline, along with the return of the very successful Hindsight series which will be available in both DVD and online versions in the near future. Please contact us for more details on how to become part of upcoming productions.
Events
Not content with simply documenting the amazing scene in Australia, 2012 will see two events go down under the 2020 banner. Firstly, Slay the Rail. Our little club based handrail event has gone from strength to strength since it’s inception in 2010. And is by far, the most fun event on the Australian BMX calendar. So come July 30th, we’re bringing it back for another epic night in Revolver. Same plan of action, just more riders, more amazing riding, more party... And again in 2012 we’ll cover it thoroughly in both the magazine and a solid web clip ala last year http://vimeo.com/29709128 Then, in October, we’ll unleash our new event, House of Hammers at the Factory Theater in Sydney’s inner west. With a bigger venue, and of course a much bigger set up which will include a rail, down ledge and a flat ledge to drop with a quarter pipe at the end to allow for both tricks and speed to return up the ledges and rail. We’ll be adding some big name DJ’s and bands into the mix to ensure the party vibe we created at Slay the Rail is big part of the Sydney gig.
StickersandPosters Full colour die cut sticker sheets and pull out posters have proved to be the biggest incentives to pick up a copy of 2020. Both stickers and pull out posters are mounted inside the magazine to ensure no peeling off or damage in transit or on the shelf. There aren’t many BMX’ers in Australia that don’t appreciate stickers and posters. Nearly all of which find their way onto walls, bikes and just about everything for years to come.
Endnote Something I’d like to add is that from day one, 2020 has prided itself in paying it’s contributors. A subject that is overlooked by many publishers in print and online. In the last year we have paid over 50 individual contributors to write, photograph, film and edit pieces for us. It gives each of them a published piece, one that we hope allows them to make a career in their chosen field. We like to think of this as building the next generation. So, on that, in the coming year, with more than a decade of creating BMX content under our belt on these shores, we’re going to continue to up the anté, with more content, more amazing photography, filming and editing across both the digital and print mediums. We’re looking forward to the evolution, the events and the good times. And I hope you’ll enjoy the ride with us. Matt Holmes
