So, on from that, heres my (piss) take on the current state of BMX from someone who missed a few years in a coma*

tight jeans From ghetto punk sagging arse jeans that caught on bars and seats a few years back, jeans have definitely been watching late night info-mercials on weight loss. Now it seems you have to jump off your wardrobe to get into your jeans. This is getting weird, I reckon there’s going to be riders spruiking around in lycra double dyed with denim print pretty soon. Still, you can be a tight arse and wear your girl’s jeans when she isn’t around. But screw that, just spray paint jeans on whilst painting your bike, all black. Metal as hell!

even tighter tshirts Remember those shrinkie things you put in the oven that came in chip packets? Maybe not? But getting your Mum to wash your new small size T-shirt 50 times does the same thing and is so hot right now.

integrated headsets When did BMX start adopting road bike technology? Please note the above lycra comment. Now I’m getting worried. Did that somehow slip through while everyone was bagging the MTB companies in BMX? You should be ashamed of yourselves! At least the MTB crew have fat tires and flat pedals...

which bb size Unlike plasma TV’s it seems the BB is getting smaller. No, wait on, it’s getting bigger? Is it still press in or is it threaded again? Sure the old US BB is massive and only came about cause of tight arse companies wanting to put one piece cranks on crap bikes, but it was burly and BMX down to the ground. I’d hate to be making cranks and bearings now! And worse still, making frames with all the options must suck. Every company should have a 22.25midBBnonintegratedheeadsetseatstaybrakemountedgyrotabsporting12.75chainstayrearwitha76.5degreeheadangle frame cause one rider somewhere will want one...

super light bikes I used to ride to school, like 45 minutes, on a plastic seat. The coolest part of the day was chilling at the bike racks with all the crew who gave a shit about bikes trying to out rock walk each other. There would always be some racer kid (spell that backwards for the same effect) a year or two older with a sick chrome bike with chequered pads that would be sprouting off about lifting his bike up with one finger. Needless to say it was rad when his mega buck frame cracked and he ate shit jumping a 4 foot fire jump...

two piece bars Jamie Mahon proving old school is cool whilst continuing to be the only contributor to feature in every issue of 2020bmxmag//CANONT90

what happened to bmx? The months since the last mag have been a roller coaster ride for me thru the ups and downs of injury, subsequent painkillers and recovery. While the time off the bike has pretty much driven me crazy, it gave me a lot of time to think about a lot of things I never would have thought about before, plus a lot of time to read mags and watch endless DVD’s.

On the smashing the crap out of myself front, it went a little something like this. Smashed tooth out, followed by the endless dentist visits to fix it. A couple of weeks later a tripod fracture of cheek and eye socket appears miraculously. Casualty via ambulance, followed by facial plastic surgery... Stoked. But I still didn’t get the David Hasslehoff looks I asked for when going under the anaesthetic. Plus notch up some more dentist action, cool, cause there’s a plasma tele in the roof which is a spin out when you’re full of laughing gas. Then first day back on the bike I score a compressed/possibly fractured lower arm/elbow and it grows to Popeye proportions. I like spinach but WTF? Everyone tells me things come in threes. What’s the deal with everything coming in threes? Superstition? Stevie Wonder nailed it with his song on that topic: “when you believe in things that you don’t understand then you suffer” This line had me thinking hard, especially when you hear it coming out of an operation. All this thinking led me to believe that maybe I had woken up from an extended coma and BMX had gotten all crazy without me...

I know I’m getting old all right. But going back a few years, if you ran 2 piece bars you were a racer. You know, like the stuff in BMXPress. Like you wanna look like that with shiny nylons? Four or more piece bars only homie. Or how else will anyone know you’re a real freestyle BMX rider? Umm, I reckon I threw those heavy arse 4 piece bars out years ago... Hypocrite that I am...

no gyros I love watching crew barspin or whip and have their straight cable jack up and screw with their brakes even more than if they had a gyro. And all cause they reckon brakes/gyros are too hard to set up anyways? Just take em off then...

small gearing You’ve seen those Euro trials rider dudes? Bouncing around on stuff in fluoro, up walls, off front-end loaders. They run super small sprockets, pedal real fast and it looks weird, way weird pedalling that fast. Wait on, all the crew I ride with all seem to have 9T drivers now, what happened to 43 tooth chainrings guys? Ultimately progression and evolution is unstoppable. Driven by the riders and even more so by the industry. BMX and the associated industries will keep morphing and refining themselves till the end of time. Luckily the progression within the riding itself is far out stripping the developments elsewhere and there’s no one doubting that the Aus crew are pushing harder than anyone. This element of BMX will never change. While many have tried to let me know that tricks can’t get any crazier, it is constantly proved wrong. Every day a rider somewhere either here or OS will up the ante and push the boundaries that little bit further in their own personal journey. See BMX is one of few areas that have such a huge range for selfexpression and innovation. So ride proud and don’t let anyone tell you you ain’t cool, whatever or however you choose to ride. Holmes *Pisstake rambles thanks to a steady diet of prescribed pain killers. We solidly endorse innovation and individuality on all fronts!

elevating bmx

Red Bull Elevation was developed in partnership with BMX icon Jay Miron as the most innovative and challenging dirt jumping contest of its kind. Add Red Bull to the mix and you know the budget was pretty much unlimited and Jay could run it how ever the f#&k he wanted. The village of Whistler, BC was the venue. The revolutionary course design included more than 140 truck loads of specially farmed and customized dirt with three line options incorporating up to 17 sets which allowed riders to hit up to eight jumps. The course was built four weeks in advance to ensure the jumps could settle and be re-shaped for the best possible rider conditions. Trust Jay to run a comp right! Ryan Nyquist pulled off one of the most amazing runs to take the win, starting with a 360X over the lower set, followed by a truck driver, a 720, an x-up back flip, and ending with a bar spin back flip in the heart of Whistler village. Corey Bohan, fresh off his X-Games gold medal once again put together a kick arse performance. Corey stuck his first two runs flawlessly with one of the biggest front flips ever seen putting him in second place. Luke Parslow launched his way onto the last podium spot with huge turndown back flips, flip whips and joined the front flip club. Colin Mackay scored sixth place and pretty much unknown James Foster pulled a triple whip clean calling the first triple whip, but we all know Cameron White beat him to it!

Colin Mackay is on a mission in 2006!//NITAI

Ryan Guettler mid 2Xwhip//ESPN

this is a take over...

We don't know what has started the trend, but it seems if you're Australian and you hit up comps in the US, chances are you'll be on the podium more times than not.

Australian riders have cleaned up at the X Games in L.A. in August with Corey Bohan winning dirt for the 2nd year in a row, Colin Mackay placed 4th in dirt whilst Ryan Guettler took 3rd in dirt and 4th in street. The Xgames also saw the big air ramp come together for the skate crew, but Mike Escamilla rebel ran it with some massive 360’s. Talking Guettler and winning, he also won dirt in the 3rd leg of the Dew Tour. He is currently leading the year end points in street and dirt and may take home two US$75,000 bonus cheques at the end of the year plus a Chevy truck or two. Canberra’s Cam White was in there with a shot at the title but blew out his knee shortly after his now famous 3X whip which has seen him recuperating in Oz. He’ll be back in the states asap and lets just say Cam has also made some serious $ this year! Meanwhile, the Gravity Games stepped further into the best comp

zone with their latest incarnation in Philadelphia. At none other than the FDR Skatepark, built by skaters, for skaters back in 1994. FDR provided one of the most original comp venues seen to date, the skater only attitude dropped when the event crew poured a truckload of money into fixing up and adding to the park. If BMXers and skaters can get along in the US maybe there’s hope for us here? Lets just say mental riding went down with Josh Harrington showing his versatility for the win, must’ve been the recent Bondi bowl session? Dirt took place right next to the park which Ryan Guettler dominated with a 720, double tail whip and front flip all in the same run, landing him a spot at the top of the podium. Luke Parslow pulled a flipwhip and a front flip in the same run to grab the silver and Joey Marks claimed bronze with a first-ever double tailwhip flip! WTF?

the colony begins Finally, an Australian parts company to take on the world! Soon anyways... Clint Millar’s parts company, Colony BMX, is nearing its debut. Parts should be available for Christmas 2005. The team is set and includes Ryan Guettler, Pete Radivo, Kenny Raggett and Clint himself. Look out for a range of parts including some Guettler signature 11 butted bars plus much more. Check www.colonybmx.com.au

back in the day

Clint Millar journeys way back into time... I did a road trip recently, back to the old farm I used to live on 18 years ago. It was a very cool trip down memory lane. I found the old cubby house that I made, with some help of course, when I was 12 years old. I was so happy to find it still in some sort of state after all these years. I actually lived and slept in this thing for like 6 months back then, thought I was camping out! You see the rusted metal thing on the ground in front of me? well, that’s my old bed frame! crazy shit! Who would have thought this was still there after all these years? The land is for sale as well. I would love to buy it. Clint Jesse Puente//HOLMES

one night in bangkok Travelling the world, paid to ride has got to be one of the ultimate career choices. When you get the chance to hit up beautiful places like Thailand, it gets even better. Seems Michael Perkins, Kim Grosser and a few others got hooked up by the mighty Red Bull with a trip to Thailand for a couple of loose demos in Bangkok. On the Thailand tip, Simon O'Brien jetted off to Thailand for 3 months of coaching the newly evolving Thai riding community with none other than Luke Fink. The two of them are full time over there with accommodation and expenses sorted. Sounds like Thailand will be the next Australia when it comes to massive talent, as on a recent trip we saw a young guy throw down a double whip over a dodgy box. All we can say is look out for the lady-boys.

the f-set rotor A while ago, KHE knocked heads with the guys from Dia-tech to help produce the worlds first integrated rotor system. With feedback from riders and distributors the system was down sized to it’s current form, the F-set. The F-set was designed to be a positive change in the industry. As the performance of the older and commonly used “external multi-cabled detangling system” was flawed due to mechanical and maintenance problems that riders and retailers had been faced with for years. In 2002 KHE decided to improve the original design completely rethinking the way a gyro worked. One of the first areas they improved was the shape and styling of the head tube. I loved it but almost everyone dissed me for the larger diameter head tube in which KHE felt they could improve not just aesthetically but also technically. The slightly larger head tube has no weight difference compared to a normal 1 1/8” head tube because the wall thickness is thinner and the distribution of stress is more even, and there is even an access hole for you to get at your cables. The whole unit including the head tube is considerably lighter compared to the multi-cabled external detangling systems that are on the market. Other pluses are that cable replacement is cheap, due to the single cable used, and lighter than external systems, simpler to install, easy access to cable replacement using the patented external “quick release system”, and the ergonomic design helps prevent injuries. I have enjoyed the evolution of the Fset and hope it evolves with bike design and is accepted as an improvement on an out dated design. Stumpy

no more excuses

Computer tells me its 11:16 pm on this August night, not such a cold evening, not such a warm one... In 44 minutes time it will have been 24 years worth of time that I have wandered this odd earth.

The duct tape holding my headphones together is slowly fraying away, the bottle is becoming empty. The chair I sit in is one on loan from my flat mate and tends to be rightly shithouse, its pneumatics are shot, one wheel is missing and the chipped bone in my elbow, aggravated from a slam earlier this evening is not making typing any easier. I have just been advised to get to bed, as I must rise early for a shoot, though often these are the best hours to sit idle, in the darkroom, in front of my fragile PC or on the big ramp at Olds Park, lit up by a full moon and a diamond studded night sky. The origins of this article originate from a time a few weeks back, tensions were high, the drama was intense and my tires were flat. Studying hard, problems at home, dramas with my girl and the general stresses of daily humanoid life were taking their toll. My argument may be one of the most written about in BMX history and quite cliché, you may say I’m a bitch, though I felt compelled, as many others have before to scribe it down. I thought maybe it’s a passage reserved for the confines of my head, one not to be shared with an audience. I then thought, well, there must be others out there in the same situation as I... Priorities all fucked up, studying, working, fighting with girlfriends and sneaking in sessions out the front of their house. My bitch is simple; I hadn’t ridden my pushy for something that seemed like an eternity. Sure I’d session curbs on the way to the train station and the shops, though I hadn’t had a good session like I was seeing and shooting in the mags. It all came to head when the washing machine flooded the bottom level of my house. I was fucking furious. It didn’t help when my little brother came home and just bitched me and bitched me and bitched me about it... I had hit rock bottom. I had nothing left. Fuck this I said, I was outta there, cranking like a MTBer heading for a half price sale at the spandex shop, I could feel the burn in my chest and legs was becoming somewhat therapeutic. Cold air piercing my ears and eyes, I pulled into the servo it all suddenly became clear. I had been searching for something, something right under my nose. I’d see riders, talk to mates and the usual conversation would strike up. ‘What up rad dude, been riding?’ To which my reply was almost always, ‘Nah, too busy with this, too busy with that.’ Most of these lads were either heading out for a session or getting new parts from an earlier session. It was right in front of my eyes, though I couldn’t grasp it.

Dave Montoya//CRISPY

The winter 2020bmxmag deadline was approaching and whilst I had ideas left and right, nothing would get past the idea stage. I kept getting stuck, thinking, fuck this, I want to be on my bike. No writing, no photos, no work, no study, no girlfriend, nothing else but a circle and a half. A call from my mate Barry Claymore travelling in a combi en route from Queensland changed things. He was coming south in a few weeks and needed a place to crash. I got psyched, my flat mate BJT got psyched and we started firing off random sessions. It was on. My manuals were losing their sketchiness, my muscles were getting that good ache they get from a session and my girlfriend got pissed as I left her for another smooth ride... (That could get me in trouble!). Its all super rad now. No stress, I’ve had my fix. Is it a consequence of lifestyle and social pressures that has driven me here? Trying to do everything at once, please everyone and neglecting myself? To what end? The system had me down; I had let myself be taken down by the system. Fuck that. No more. I want to end this article with a killer line, something cheesy like the glass is always half full just doesn’t fill the void. How about something to inspire all you poor bastards out there to stop telling yourself you have no time to ride, no time to think and no time to die. Fight your demons at the park, or trails, or whatever piece of earth where its all about the 4130. Ah, that works... Now where’s that duct tape... Servus Chris Samuel

On a stealth mission in Aus recently Josh Harrington, Matt Berringer, Mike Aitken and Drama's producer, Brian Purdy trekked around the east coast. All in the name of filming banger sections on as yet unseen in the US terrain. Coming in the middle of winter was always going to be a gamble and there were only a few hours and few sessions possible. And they thought we were in a drought! The few sessions that did go down were phenomenal. Lets just say Bondi saw Harrington and Aitken throw down so much air and style that the place will go down in history. Look out for the Purdy/Mirra co-production Sentenced for Life (Drama 2) in early 2006. Speaking of Drama, it premieres on Fuel TV in November as part of the Metal Jam BMX marathon (Nov 12th & 13th). The 2 days of non stop 20inch programming will also have introductions/interviews with Brian Purdy (for Drama), Jay Miron (for Metro) and hopefully an interview with Matt Beringer. Get yourself a Foxtel subscription and a plasma TV...

strictly biz Strictly BMX has been undergoing some big changes lately... Paul Robertson from Yabber-Dabber-Deen in Scotland is finally here after over a year and a half of immigration agents and other legal crap. But well worth the work n wait especially after Marc contemplated selling a few times over the last few years. But now its just begun, the shop is in the midst of a whole new make over, paint wise and the back workshop mail order area. The old website is suffering so they're only taking phone orders till the new site is up and running which will include music and art sections. They also have some collaborations coming out, the ying yang as well as as a shit load of world first products/lines and Strictly one-offs, new clothing dezines, and that's just the tip of the iceberg...

We tripped at this pic! Mike Escamilla punked a few rebel runs on the recent XGames big air ramp and managed to pull what may be the biggest nosed 360 ever? WTF?

The last few issues have seen some kick arse stuff being given away. Here's a word up from the winner of the Federal Foundation... When I was 18 I bought my first BMX from my friends brother. I used to ride it in my driveway everyday. One night I went to City sk8 and some guy there let me ride his bike and I’ve never looked back. BMX has totally changed my life, I’ve made so many rad friends and have so many crazy memories. I have to admit, my last bike was more of a social seat with wheels but the foundation is so light and short and shiny and just the most absolutely perfect bike I could ever hope for so I’m actually riding again!! And a word to all the girls out there who are interested in riding, just do it!! Seriously, it’s fu*#en rad yo!! BMX has been the best thing that has ever happened to me in my life. Thanx So much to all the kids at Stowaway, 2020bmxmag and Federal. Bonnie Thomas Meanwhile, last issue saw Aaron Bradshaw from Panania NSW take home the GT Bump. Just a couple more ways that 2020bmxmag is hooking up the riders of Australia.

It’s a animated cartoon site set around a handful of charac characters so stupid it’s funny. The sites namesake character Homestar Runner is a dimwit with invisible arms whose girlfriend also has invisible arms. The king of town does nothing but eat and Strong Mad has a mental deficiency of some description and a speech impediment. But, the main reason you’ll want to go back time and time again is for the Strong Bad emails. In this section they take emails sent into them and have Strong Bad answer them in as a condescending way as possible. Make sure you use correct English, grammar and punctuation. Step 1

Step 2

Here Zac Musarsa shows you the correct way to ride that 'so hot right now' street spot time after time after time. He has got to be the smartest rider ever//IAN R OBINSON

spot wreck

Street riding and BMX go together like lock and key. This simple equation usually results in some kind of damage to the spot in question and usually it is kept in check enough so the spot can be ridden again. The following is what happens when the simple ethos of respect is disregarded and a spot is shut down.

What do you suppose would happen if a crew of riders turned up to your local park doing all the latest and greatest stunt manoeuvres? Now there’s stacks of these guys and they can do just about any trick, but they’re obnoxious, rude and seemingly unaware that the park has other users. Now these guy’s even go to the trouble of cutting down grind rails to a size that suits them, not considering the rail was put there with a specific purpose. Photographers set up, mad tricks go down with the flashes exploding and when its all done the crew packs their gear and vanishes, never to be seen again. Meanwhile, days after this the local council is accusing you (the local rider) and your pals of cutting the grind rail and being arrogant to other locals. Now the park might get shut down because some stupid outer-towners showed up for a chance at stardom via an overcrowded photo-shoot. This may all seem melodramatic, with the park getting shut down, but lets say that it was a street spot or trails. What then? Any misbehaviour at a set of trails can promptly lead to trails being dozed, the same goes for a street spot. I thought that all of this shit was some sort of common knowledge, but it seems not and some dumb fucks need a lesson in how to act. There’s a wallride just down the road from my house, which has been an awesome place to ride for well over twelve years. This spot is at the entrance of a mobile home park, so it’s full of elderly folk who can do more than their fair share of worrying. The wall has been ridden constantly in that time by many various people and without any problems. This is mainly due to it being ridden by small groups who know when and how to attend similar venues. Logs had been placed at one end of the wallride which prevented the wall being stalled, this is completely understandable because it’s NOT A SKATEPARK! The wall was fine to ride anywhere else,

22 2020bmxmag.com.au

the logs only prevented hitting 3 metres of a 12 metre wall, so the spot was still very rideable. Just recently, some “outertowners” went to the wallride for a session. Champion types who aren’t concerned with preserving a spot, only interested in dominating it for one day. These individuals must be conscious to their actions, because it is so obvious that their dumbass behaviour leads to shit getting locked down. Unfortunately for one little champion, he wasn’t good enough to ride between the logs. So he cut the logs that were stuck in the ground, in broad daylight! Just to do one trick, a photo and then disappear, what a waste. So some spastic gets an average trick at an awesome spot, hope it boosts your deflated ego. The photo will be forgotten in a month, but the spot might get shut down for ever, cheers for that. Riders with these mentalities are not concerned if a spot gets fucked up, because all they’re interested in is getting their hardcore shot up on the cover of a magazine (not this one...). In fact they have probably only sessioned it once or twice before, which was more of a scope mission to suss out the joint for their “big photo opportunity” than a ride anyway. I work down the road from this wall ride, at a bottle-o that serves the thirsty locals, including those from the mobile home park. Many of these people have seen me riding around on a BMX in the neighbourhood. Now I’ve been accused of cutting the logs and being intimidating to the elderly with my gang of “nitt-witts”. This bullshit even made the crime page in the local paper. What were these dicks doing for people to write into the paper? It may appear hypocritical coming from one whose name came from this very spot, but eat this food for though: The logs could be pulled out of the ground and replaced after the session instead of being cut and thrown in a drain. If that part of the wall was to be ridden (which wasn’t often) it would be a 3 man

mission very early in the morning that would last only a short while as opposed to a large crew shredding for ages in the middle of the day. It’s as Mr Matt Holmes said when I told him about this article, “It should be like visiting a national park, leaving no more than a footprint.” Street riding isn’t legal, it’s usually destructive in one way or another no matter what you do. Whether rails are being grinded, a wallride is ridden or people are jumping out of your way as you zip around on a footpath, riding is not a welcomed practice outside of race tracks and skateparks. Use your fucking heads, you don’t have the right to ride any old rail, ledge or drain because you’ve got talent on a pushbike. Architects don’t build stairs for kids to jump off, pools weren’t made to be carved. Being conservative is the only way to preserve these spots and guys who think they can trash a spot by bringing swarms of riders to it are cracked in the head. Giving attitude to owners or pedestrians isn’t going to help your cause, so what if they don’t understand how hard the trick you’re trying is. The only thing they can see is that someone is destroying property that has been paid for. It’s all they need to see and it’s all a rider needs to remember when it comes to riding shit that wasn’t made to be ridden. Guys that think they deserve to ride places without respect can fuck off as far as any genuine rider is concerned. What, because you’ve done you’re dues as a rider you have the right to ruin things for everyone else? Pull your heads in champions, no matter how good you are, it’s not a place that was built for you to ride and trash. Remember that at the next photo opp. JZA

vertical battle

Red Bull UK held a new event this year, the Red Bull Vertical Battle, where 10 skaters and 10 BMXers were invited to battle it out on a vert ramp set-up in the city centre of Nottingham. I would have to say that this was one of the best events that I have been to yet. The Red Bull ramp is always a treat to ride and the organizers did a terrific job in putting this event together. It was definitely enjoyable for the riders and skaters involved and portrayed our sports as exciting and professional to the general public. The organisers were able to run heats, best trick, high air and the finals for both skateboarding and BMX in just 3 hrs! I thought this worked really well as there was action happening constantly to keep the people watching interested in the event. With only 4 people going into the finals from 10, qualifying was going to be tough. Unlucky to miss out were Peter Geys and Ronnie Remo who were both riding really well with back to back variations around 9-10ft. Zach Shaw is one of my favourite riders to watch on a vert ramp, I think he has one of the best styles out there, natural and effortless. Zach ended up in 4th place with some smooth flowing runs which included 540 inverts, big flairs and the best inverts you will ever see on a vert ramp. Bas Keep took out 3rd with big airs in both directions, some big old tuck no handers and whips thrown into the mix. I was really pleased with my qualifying runs as I was able to get all my big tricks clean and I think it was the best I have ever ridden in a comp. The finals were a bit of a struggle for me though, as I crashed on barspin 540’s in my first 2 runs. Lucky for me it was best run counts in the final and I managed to land the barspin 5 in my last run giving me 2nd place. There was no doubt who won the comp, Jay Miron has been putting some time in on the big ramp lately and it showed in Nottingham. Jay mixed the tech lip tricks in with some big floaty 540s and whips, stylish superman’s and a 540 whip. 1st place for Jay. The high air comp was held in the same jam as best trick. Going into the high air comp everyone knew it would be between Bas and Zach. Bas just edged out Zach this time clearing 11.5ft. The highlight of the event for me was watching Peter Geys pull his first 900 in the best trick comp. Over the last few years I have seen Peter come so close to getting the 900 many times and I know how much he wanted that trick. He pulled it first attempt, perfect, catching plenty of transition on the way in. I know Peter has probably still got a smile on his face now. Jay ended up winning the best trick with a big 540 whip. Not sure how you can compare a 900 and a 540 whip but I’m sure the judge’s scores must have been really close. Matt Fairbairn Fairbairn barspin air on the Bull ramp//RedBull

dk six pack comp

DK Bikes have come to the party in a big way with a Six Pack to giveaway to next issues best letter. If there was ever a reason to write into us, it must be now!

th is!

The dirt inspired Six Pack has undergone a makeover for 2006. DK have been making the Six Pack for a few years now and this shows with a neat, simple frame design without any crazy innovations, just pure BMX. Its 100% cromo with a chain stay wishbone, small dropouts that will still run a peg if you want and a machined head tube. There’s also top and down tube gussets near the head tube for extra strength and the u-brake is on the seat stays so you can run a small drive train if you feel the need without the dreaded chain slap on your brakes! For a bike of this price it rolls pretty high with tubular cromo 3 piece cranks, cromo 2 piece bars and 48 spoke Sun BlackBox rims. All in all it’s an awesome street ready and dirt eager 20inch machine without the mega price tag. To win this piece of solid state, US BMX engineering, get pen to paper and write us. We’re all ears and are open to questions, criticisms, crazy stories, recipes, bitches, moans, tales of glory or whatever. Next issue will see our choice of what we dig the most or find the most interesting to answer. As per usual the judges (us) decision is final and the Six Pack pictured (RRP $529) is not transferable for cash. You'll find the addresses below. Get your letters rolling in, as entries close on the 12th of November with all last mail (or email) received that day.

letter of the month pegs on right, left pedal forward. is that right? Dear 2020 mag, I’m a 15 year old rider from western Australia and I’m writing to ask you for some advice. I was wondering if I should change the side I run my pegs on my bike or change my footing. I currently grind on the left side but run my right pedal forward. My friends tell me that if my feet are placed like this I should have my pegs on the right side of my bike. I have tried grinding on my friends bike, which has the pegs on the right side, but it felt uncomfortable leaning into my right to get on the grind. Also with my current style when I get onto the grind I do a quarter pedal forward, so my crank arms are not vertical. I cannot bunny hop out of the grind like this too well. So I’m wandering if I should swap my footing around because I can bunny hop well both ways or should I change my pegs onto the right side of my bike. If I do this do I have to buy a LHD cassette hub so I can put my sprocket on the other side or could I get away with grinding on the same side of my sprocket, its only 25teeth? Thanks Tim Riverton, Western Australia

inbox

Hey Tim, First up there’s no right or wrong when it comes to pegs on which side or which pedal forward. There is however a natural way to run it all, here's the deal. Most riders run right foot forward and find it easier to grind on the right side of the bike. This would be the way that like 70% of riders run and I would try this way first if you are not sure. The second option is left pedal forward and grind on the left, this works just as well but probably only accounts for like 20% of riders. The real weirdos are the last 10% who run right pedal forward and grind on the left or left pedal forward and grind on the right. Now I know I just called you a weirdo, but don’t hate me just yet, there’s no reason why you cant run right pedal forward and grind on your left, its just that you should try swapping your pegs and see if it magically makes some tricks easier. Trying your friend’s bike is a good place to start but you might find that his bike just feels different to yours so I would swap the pegs on your bike so that everything else feels normal. You shouldn’t need to buy a LHD hub, your 9-25 gearing should be small enough to not get in the way. You will probably need to give your new setup a few rides before you can decide if it’s a better way to go, if you have

been running your pegs on the left its going to take a few grinds to get used to them being on the right, but in the long run it should work out easier. If you do all this and its still not feeling right, swap the pegs back and try left pedal forward and grind on the left. It’s usually harder to change the way you run your pedals but if you can bunny hop either way you are probably half way there already. See how you go with this and if all else fails go back to your original set up, like I said there is no right and wrong, just normal and abnormal.... One last thing to keep in mind is that most people air the same way as they grind, i.e. if you grind on the right you air right to left, so the same side of your bike is towards the coping. This makes it easier to link together a run that includes airs and grinds and makes a really big difference with tricks like turn downs and look backs. If you air right to left but have your left pedal forward it’s going to make these tricks harder to learn because your knees will be in different spots. For an example of one of those weirdo riders who have their left foot forward but grind on the right check out a guy called Ryan Nyquist I hear he seems to ride OK, even if his feet are all crossed up. Hi Guys,

Dear 2020,

The DVD you did was sooo mad, even better not paying for it. I wanna know something though, in the interview with Ryan Guettler he mentioned Glen Stacey AKA Lizard to most, where is he? I’ve ridden with Lizard many years ago, he was the coolest dude and has some awesome tricks, Can you find out if he still rides and where cause I haven’t seen him in years.

I am a scooter rider form Eagleby. But I’m a mad mad BMX fan as well. I was wandering if anyone out there would sponsor me I can 360 the spine, 540, 720, fast plants, drop off the sub and stuff like that at Beenleigh. If you want to see me in action send me a letter, but I can't do it on school days.

Someone wrecked my trails on my property. I went away for a while and when I got back I was the first one to hit them. I jumped the first and landed fair on my arm and ribs, cracking 3 of them and shattering my elbow and got five compound fractures in my humerus which was out thru the skin and I had to have 15 pins and 35 staples in my arm plus a 3 hour operation. I was in the hospital for 5 weeks. My bike, bars and forks are bent and my wheels are buckled. When I find who did it they are going to get an ass whoopen.

Right now its kinda slippery due to being new but once it wears in many of fun sessions will be going down. Puni has been riding and testing out Mike Daly’s new signature Dragonfly frame (The King St) apparently he thinks the specs are great and it rides really well. Wallis just got back from the Roskilde festival in Denmark, he was doing shows at the festival and then went on a roadtrip with Neils Thanild and a few others through Sweden. Wallis and Neils’ Company, Simple Bikes now have Frames available in Australia and more products on the way through Kickassbmx distro. Rystys rider owned and run BMX shop is now open in Canberra. The shop is called Back Bone BMX and is the first decent BMX shop Canberra has had, hopefully all will go well. If you’re in the area check it out at Shop 6, Fisher Place, Weston Creek. queensland The BBSA has had a set back with the planned improvements to the Beenleigh BMX park being put on hold. The council in all its wisdom has spent the grant it promised elsewhere, don’t despair though as they are already working on new avenues to get $300,000 to bring Beenleigh into the future of park design. Mark Schneider and Clint Sibbald have come up with some great plans for concrete additions in the works, lets hope that the council see things his way this time. Check www.bbsai.org or www.freestylebmx. com.au for more. Heavy Metal Heroes 13 is set for December 10th and 11th, 2005. This comp should be huge and is the last chance for riders to get points for the overall year end standings. Even if you haven’t been to one recently you should still get along and see what all the fun is about. Check www.bbsai.org for more info. The TripleSix team DVD should be getting edited as you read this. It should be huge considering the team they have, Pete Radivo, Kym Grosser, Clint Millar, Ryan Guettler, Zack Musarsa, Nick Richardson, Brendan Jones, Nick Copper, Dave Manconi, Haimona Ngata, Scott Greentree and Kenny Raggett. It will be available by November at all good BMX stores in Australia & NZ. Nick Richardson has started riding again after many months off because of the dreaded knee reconstruction demon. On his second day back 7 foot airs were witnessed he was heard saying he was just taking it easy. that kid rules! Chris Edgar has made the move from Rockhampton to Brisbane. Plenty of time spent at Beenleigh and Tim Wood’s place is showing in his riding that’s for sure. Tim Wood scored himself an X games invite for vert, he went over and flew the flag for Australia. After taking it hard the weekend before on a hung 540 and two failed 900’s at the Soulbowl, Tim ended up taking tenth at the X Games but deserved higher. Riding in front of 50,000 people would be nerve raking for most I am sure. Tim had some bad luck at while riding at Woodward the week after and crashed a simple flair as he put it. He ended up getting a broken ankle out of it with 10 screws and a plate in there, ouch. Clint Millar

The event will move from Box Hil to Camberwell on the 11th and then to Epping on the 14th. The jams will feature best trick comps on certain ramps and ledges with proddy and cash up for grabs. More info next issue when Finky returns from Thailand...

skate parks boys took full advantage of the dry spots in the weather. Ahhhh, winter in Adelaide.

First up the Bendigo trail jam and DVD premiere is on the 8th of October, no doubt it will be a crazy weekend and well worth the trip. The new Btown DVD will be available on the night for $20 to. Focalpoint now has a website: www.focalpointbmx.com for all the latest news and zine info. We are also working on a new DVD. Laz Acres has started a new clothing company called Polarised BMX go to there website for more info. www.polarisedbmx.com

Russell Tranter is finally whipping and has been making good use of my camera, so by the time you read this you can actually see some of the Adelaide antics on www.safreestyle.com if not among these pages.

Camberwell local Simon Doran has wrecked his knee and will be out for a while but luckily doesn’t need surgery. In other Camberwell news local rider Birch is in the USA whilst Llia and Rhys just got back from a 6 week mission over there. 338 clothing is now available through Strictly BMX. Zack Musarsa is in Canada shredding im sure. Ian Robinson is also overseas trekking all over the place. (what’s with everyone being overseas? including myself). There is a new concrete box jump set up built by the council near Camberwell. It’s actually not to bad, three in a row which get bigger each time with a fun hip off the side of the 3rd. something different at least. One of Melbourne’s oldest and best BMX shops, TotalBMX has been bought by a rider called Adam Robb, don’t worry though Gorak still works there. Melbourne and world wide ruler, Luke Fink now rides for Etnies shoes and Pete Radivo has left Hoffman Bikes and Primo and is now riding for WeThePeople and Colony BMX. There is going to be a jam at Eltham Skatepark on October 2nd, 12 pm onwards. The plan is to have a relaxed jam, with a few prizes and giveaways for highest air, trick of the day ect. There will be a BBQ and cool drinks for sale too, come down, bring your bike, your brews and just have a good time to welcome the creation of a new skatepark! Thanks to Total BMX, Supercycle and PolarisedBmx. Ok that’s all the news I have for now.... Take care. Cooper

south australia Winter fell on Adelaide and everything got wet. But, despite that the South Oz BMX community has tried to remain active by organizing jams here and there, the first of which was organized by Moz and entitled “How’s ya face”. From all reports everyone had fun at CitySk8 that Friday evening. Check safreestyle.com for pics (Thanks again to Justin Sikora for them). Of course with the weather, the dirt dogs got their shovels out and dusted them off for the digging season, the flatlanders went to their underground spot (which is actually seven floors up, go figure) and the

Mark Modra is back in town and adding to Adelaide’s flatland contingent taking the grand total to 3, and a half (I’m the half). Daniel Dunn has hooked up a new sponsorship deal which means now he is riding a Volume thanks to BMX Melitia. Sunday November 6th is the date to mark on the calendar for the next Gravitational Variable jam. G-Variable 3 (Tres Diablos Jam) will go ahead this time at Elizabeth skate park to celebrate 6 years of safreestyle.com. At the time of writing this all the sponsors aren’t sorted but Kickassbmx has already signed up to supply some goodies for the day. So if you’re a park rider or a flatlander, come along and I might throw something free your way. Matt Hodgson Formerly of Mega Bike and Stowaway Distribution is now at Adelaide Hills Cycles, Gawler St (Main St, just down from the SK8 Park) in Mt Barker. All quality BMX brands will be readily available at Adelaide Hills Cycles from now on so call Matt if you need any help as he knows his shit. Well, that’s about it. There probably is more, but I’ve taken to locking myself in my room with a new guitar and amp. The neighbour’s hate me. Send me news! dave@flatlandaustralia.com Dave Sayer

western australia The big news this month is the Livewire Jam that is going to be happening at the Mandurah skatepark on the 4th of December starting at 12pm. This will no doubt be the biggest thing to happen in Western Australia for some time. Support for the jam has been huge, with the Mandurah crew, Freestyle now, DK bicycles, Manmade clothing, Stowaway distribution and Tempered bikes all helping out and the list is still going to grow by the time the jam happens. There will be Livewire Jam T-shirts on sale as well. The Livewire Jam is a celebration of a life that was cut short for Chadd Walton. Chadd was an awesome rider that rode with the Mandurah crew, In April this year Chadd was involved in a major car accident and after a few months in hospital he did not recover and sadly passed away. The Livewire jam has been put in place so Chadd will always have a crew and a jam to come to. Go to www.westozbmx.com for more info.

Matt in Esperance//JARVIS

Matt Lawton from tempered bikes in Esperance has been busy lately getting some prototype parts on the go so be on the look out soon for some new goodies from them. T-shirts are on the go at the moment so check out www.temperedbikes.tk for more info on that stuff. Matt is also off to Canberra as he is now a member of the national youth round table so he will be representing all bikers there. The scene in Esperance is picking up more and more with guys like Owen Pennington and Adam Cowcher shredding and progressing, partly due to the indoor park that now has some new gear including a four foot high sub box, a small kicker and a nice wall ride. The www.flatlandwa.com crew is growing by the day with new riders like Guy Russ popping up. All round nice guy and photo taker, James Bergeles got the operation that he was wanting. After waiting for over one year of he finally got the rest of his skull replaced with metal plates. Now his brain is protected and he can start to ride again. Are trails dying in Western Australia? The trails at Wooraloo are now gone thanks to a school extension. Walliston trails in Bunbury aren’t looking too good, neither is the sand pit in Wanneroo and it looks like the mounds of dirt in Esperance might be history soon as well. What about Collie? Are there any good trails left in Western Australia? With summer approaching new rounds of W.A.N.K.S. will be up and running. Round 4 will be a small comp at the Carine skatepark on Friday night the 30th of September starting from 4pm. Round 5 looks set for a return to Eaton skatepark in mid November (t.b.a) and round 6 will go back to the Carine skatepark for the youth festival on the Sunday 11th December starting at 11am. On Saturday the 3rd of December from 11am – 4pm the Exposure 2005 Leavers Youth Festival will take place on the beach at City beach. There will be a mini half set up with bike and skate demos going down as well as a jam session and spot prizes as well. Word up to the crew in Albany, Patrick has informed me that there are some good shedders there and that they are crying out for some comps. Bad news in that department though as the council are not very helpful and now have cancelled the funding for another park. The Freestyle Now Bicycle Stunt Squad will be in full effect over the next few month travelling all over the state. If you want to see them in action dates are: Saturday 15th October Narrogin Agricultural show and Friday 4th November Canning agricultural show and more dates are still being added. The Gravity Games are retuning to Perth this October 6th to 9th and the BMX comp is on again. This year its Am only with a stash of prizes from Kickassbmx and Dragonfly Bikes. There's

practice on Thursday from 2pm-6pm and the comp runs on Sunday 9am-4pm. Jamage action went down at the Perry lakes skatepark on the 25th of June. There was a small turn out but that was due to the weather not looking the best, props to all those that rode and had fun. The Mandurah crew made the trek up, young Kie Ashworth rode like he does, big! And local ripper Owen was seen doing some huge whip transfers. The Carine crew showed up in force later and busted out the Carine style with Bodie showing them the way. Big thanks to Georges bike shop for flowing some prizes for the rippers. Mike Cernotta in living it large and representing W.A. over in the big ghetto called America. Riding and hanging out with all the famous people, good to see that he is getting what is due to him. Finally Canberra transplant Pete Majoinen has moved over to Perth for a while, look out for him at the skatepark, he’ll be the guy flowing big airs and telling you all about knee reconstructions. Email shaun@freestylenow.net.au if you are wanting more info on any of the latest jams or comps that are on go or if you got any news you want added. Shaun Jarvis

new zealand north is. Jams, jams and more jams and I’m not talking bout the kind that your mum buys from the supermarket for $2.95! There have been a few jams in Taupo organised by cousin Jed for which there’s been a good turnout. The infamous Island Bay crew are having another of their trail jams during labour weekend which is in October I think, I can’t bloody remember, you get Monday or Friday off anyways so there’s no excuse to miss it! Also heard Christchurch have been having a few jams with bands, prizes and barbecues, sounds pretty radabonzical to me! There’s a new bike parts company fresh outa the 03, check it at www.edhbmx.com Finally on the subject of jams, plans are underway to have one of the first “official” jams at Vic park in Auckland. The Edge radio station is gonna be behind it along with a few other sponsors (please Lion Breweries, please Lion Breweries!) It’s gonna be sometime in December and should be a goodie, there will be under 16 and open class and I will let you know the dates as soon as they are available. Get your jandals out, your sunscreen, a nice blanket or foldable chair to sit on and fill the chilly bin, sorry “ESKY” up with a few coldies and get ready to eat barbecue, that is unless you’re going to have a roll around! Mike “Jew Unit” Bell, (NZ photographer extraordinaire! he’s like the Chris Polack of NZ, only not as buff and successful with the shady ladies!)

anyways, he’s in Glasgow at the moment, basically going to the pub and pissing his money up against the wall, sounds pretty damn rad to me, when you get a chance, take a peek at his blog site, www.lips-trip.blog Returning from overseas last month was the Wazzman, Chipper, and cousin Karl from Wellington, from all accounts, all they did was blaze hard, drink booze, eat, blaze hard, ride around the sea wall in Vancouver looking up girls skirts, blaze hard, go swimming with crap loads of girls, blaze hard, witness the sickness of the beast pulling 6 foot 540’s out of a 13 foot bowl, blaze hard, and pimp their rides!! Wazzman is coming ultimately close to having a complete ride pimped out in green parts, everything from valve caps to ODI grip covers! While we’re on the subject of all things green, Scott Greentree aka “leWiz” was recently over in jolly old NZ to chill and hangout with another new Auckland addition, Mike from Triple Sizzle for nizzle (666) while here. Wiiz went with Mike on a lil bit of a trip round the north island and on his final week here, knocked himself into next year bombing into tole street bowl, an old school bowl in Auckland. His front tyre washed and he went straight to face and was seeing stars and spaceships for quite a while, hopefully he’s all healed up now! Ghosts who walk! There was a bit of surprise at the skatepark most recently, when none other than one of NZ’s BMX legends, Shaun Grey showed up out of the blue. It was an amazing site to see one of the forefathers of BMX in New Zealand pull pancakes and big stretched old school no handers after not riding for roughly 6 years or so, after a horrific motorbike crash ended his riding career. Just think of the big stylish tricks that people are pulling these days, (turndowns in your lap, flying v old school no handers, knack knacks as big as Scott Voquelt!!) and times that by ten, ten years ago, that’s how rad the Grey Ghost was. Finally, the same old same old, loads of new parks popping up all over the place, heard Wanganui to Huntly, so when going from town to town, take a lil bit of time to have a look around, you may be pleasantly surprised! Congratulations goes out to Dave Manconi, who is expecting a lil nugget very soon and also Chipmunk from Wellington, who got his news when he was in Canada, needless to say that I’m sure many a beer was drunk and many a bud was skunked! Also congrats to Jonathan Skipper, who tied the knot most recently with long-time girlfriend Nicole, plus Tim and Kelly in Canada, who are heading back here in December for their “rockabilly wedding!

That’s all that I can think of right now, support those who support the sport, i.e. bike shops that stock rider run bmx companies and be kind to yourself, and each other. It’s too damn early, big up’s to all the zombies living in Aussie, and don’t forget! “ZOMBIES BLAZE HARD!!” Ahaha, rampant! Peace. Haimona

new zealand south is. Everyone seems to be carrying injuries at the moment in Dunedin so not too much riding is getting done, that and it gets pretty dam cold down here in winter. Sadly one of the better street spots in Duno’s has seen its last days session. The ghetto ramp set up against a shipping container has been completely removed right down to the last scrap of wood. Local riders are at a loss as confidence was growing as the sessions progressed. Time to rebuild! Queenstown local ripper Brian Veint is organising a south island jam that will end in Christchurch on labour weekend and will include a ride at Sam’s bike park, which takes up an entire tennis court in his own backyard. Local hardcore punk band Sixlip are rumoured to be playing too! contact Brian on 0210366393. Queenstown also recently welcomed back Australian rider Brad. Bret Frew is currently chilling in Whistler, Canada on his bike and ripping up the local dirt-jumping scene, he’s due to return end of August. A lot of riding has been getting done lately in Christchurch, namely Eddy Abbott and Jeremy Grey, keep it coming! A group of riders from Christchurch, Blenheim, Motueka and Geraldine meet at Reefton’s new skate park (will have photos next issue) some of the riders stayed the weekend while the rest of us arrived on the Sunday to ride. It seemed that the Reefton locals weren’t to down with some of the BMXers riding the yet to be completed big bowl and gathered some support i.e.; hammers, knifes etc and were about to make their views known when another two carloads of BMXers arrived and things chilled out. Gonna be a sick park when it’s completed! Opens labour weekend. Finally, as part of the blossom festival, Alexandra will be hosting a BMXdemo with an assortment of riders from all over the south island. One last thing, we just got the dates for next years x-air comp, January 21st and 22nd in Wellington, see ya there. Devin

A long winter might have kept some inside, but riding still went down...

By the time you read this, Glen Downey’s Hyde Park Sunday session will have gone down.

Shane Badman has become one of the rider representatives for FBMX in the ongoing struggle to ensure this organization is all about the riding. In a recent Australia wide telephone conference a lot of crap was waded through before some forward motion was gathered which was fantastic. Rest assured flat riders, Shane’s presence will ensure flat is represented to the fullest and will always be a part of the BMX Games or whatever it is called from here on in... As if anyone would mess with Shane when he gets is shirt off?

Inertia’s long awaited products are now finally in production and are scheduled to arrive at distributors globally within 2 months. This includes Australia’s own Super Sports who now take care of the UK based company. Frames, forks and barends are the first offerings with other products not far behind on the production front. Check out www.inertiabikes.com

Taking it to the street//CRISPY

Brendan jones IS pretty much like any other rider out there. He loves to ride. lately his riding has been stepping up in huge leaps and bounds,Which has made a lot of people take note. So we decided it was time for brendan to have an interview To find out what makes him tick, you know the deal.Weeks went by and it was all coming along well. Photos were rolling in from big sessions and it was looking good. of course we slacked off a bit and left the actual interview till the last minute. But it was coming along pretty well too, or so we thought. COME the last night we had to finish THE MAG,a text message came in letting us know that Brendan had just broken his wrist and was going into surgery. No more extra question time for this issue... SO we've pieced together what we had in answers along with some insights from those that knwo him well. BUT more importantly we've chosen some killer shots that speak a truckload louder than any words ever could. Thats when you work out that Brendan is far from being JUST ANother ORDINARY rider... *We might have to run some more words next issue... 2020bmxmag.com.au

Wild tooth that musta been hella close to the camera//CRISPY

So Brendan, give us some background, about yourself. Where are you from, where do you live etc I’m 22, I’ve lived in Sydney my whole life and have resided at Manly for the past couple of years. How long have you been riding the 20inch? I’ve ridden BMX’s forever, but I started racing when I was about 13 or 14 and it all went from there, I’ve been more into this side of BMX since around 17. BMX racing as a kid eh? Yeah, I got pretty into racing for a few years. In the last year or so I raced A pro, I did well at a few races, it was good fun. I still like racing but just don’t have time for it. Do you think that has affected your riding style? I guess it has in a few ways, I like going fast, it must be a good starting point for riding, it just gives you a good feel for your bike, like learning the basics before trying tricks. Tell us what, who and where influenced your riding from an early age? Well it was probably mostly my friends that I rode with at the time, none of them really ride anymore except for Turbo and I still ride with him. There were also other racers that I looked up to, I remember looking up to Jason Cousins at the time because he raced and shredded at the trails. Who would be your biggest influences these days? Definitely. The friends that I ride with. Seaton, Gee, Turbo, Kenny and the whole northern beaches + city crew. There are to many other riders to name that are so good and always fun to ride with. Where are your local spots right now? Mostly Mona Vale, Terry Hills and the trails that Turbo builds, I ride Dulwich a bit too. I’m really looking forward to Homebush, I can see myself spending a lot of time there. The last few years saw you with more than your fair share of downtime thru injury. What kept you motivated to get back on the bike and keep pushing? At times it was really hard, around that time a lot of bad stuff kept happening. My Dad died at that time. That was so bad, I was just never happy. Then I kept getting hurt and I crashed a few cars. But things started getting better. I saved up the dollars and went overseas for a while. And since then everything has been getting better and better. My Dad was always into me ridding and he never gave up on things, I guess that’s a major part of my motivation. Tell us about your recent trip to Dubai and Saudi Arabia? Well, we were supposed to do shows for 6 months, but it kind of fell through, and we didn’t do any but we were away for almost two months. It was so good to see a part of the world I most likely would never have seen. We also went to Egypt on the way, so I went to see the pyramids, they were amazing I’ve always wanted to see them and I got to because of riding.

It's all about speed. NZ grind to air//DALY

What are your thoughts on travelling, any other interesting travel stories? I love it. Seeing and experiencing different places, I definitely would like to see more. As for stories, I have a few driving ones from the states, haha. Any thoughts on why all the Australian crew who travel over to compete are killing it? I look up to those guys so much. It’s so good to see them doing it. Seems everyday Aussie’s are showing the rest of the world how good we can be. Its crazy seeing all the stuff they are doing these days. What do you think of the riding scene here in Australia today? I think its really good, I’ve had a bit more of a chance to get around and see different parts of it lately, it really motivates you when you see new places and riders. The recent BMX Games opened the eyes of many as to what you could pull on a bike, was that event big for you? It was just good because of all the riders that were there, like seeing friends from all over Australia, doing well was just a bonus.

38 2020bmxmag.com.au

Your progression as of late seems to have accelerated massively. What’s the deal? I’d say its because of the guys I ride with, and I’m more confident and motivated now more than ever. You ride pretty much everything hard, do you prefer park to dirt or street? I ride park mostly because I’m lazy more than anything. I like riding every thing. What else goes on in the life of Brendan outside of BMX? Lately I have been spending a lot of time with my new girl Annette, she has defiantly made me very happy, and apart from that I just like going out and doing stuff... Any thanks? My family and friends, mum seems have to accepted riding a lot more lately, thanks mum. Then Terry for the Volume and Demolition hook up. Terry has done everything for me, and helped me in every part of my life especially since I lost my Dad, so I could never thank Terry enough. Seaton, Gee and Turbo for always making me ride. Mike D for heaps of different things, and Clint for helping me out with Orchid and finally Annette my girl, for being so supportive thanks!

Massive lookback in the park//CRISPY

rendan is the coolest guy to ride with, he’s always enjoying himself and is always up for a ride somewhere, even if he didn’t get home untill 6:30am he’ll still be there a few hours later ready to ‘man up’ to whatever the session may bring. when Brendans on his bike, people watch because every time he does something he gives it all he's got. If you start fufing rails 5ft back on a 6ft mini to get the speed for a tailwhip air one week after you’ve learnt them, you’d have to be keen, which is exactly what Brendan is, keen to ride and just have a good time with good friends. Seaton Spratt

first met Brendan in 2000 and he has been one of my best friends since. Brendan was originally a BMX racer, so when he started up he already knew how to control his bike. He’s one of those people that you ride with and you’ll be guaranteed something big will happen, wether it would be him or you. He brings a full on attitude with him when he rides and provokes an atmosphere where it becomes like, just do it, or you’ll risk being ridiculed for not even trying. I remember a few years back, Brendan saying, that if it weren’t for me he wouldn’t be able to do the stuff he does today, well all I can say is, if it wasn’t for him I wouldn’t be doing what I do today. You couldn’t possibly wish for a better riding mate then Brendan. Since I have known Brendan for quite some time now, I’ve seen him go through some rough times, from family to injury he just

2020bmxmag.com.au 40 2020bmxmag.com.au

bounces back every time like nothing happened. Not that he ignores these issues; he just seems to have an amazing ability to overcome adversity. He uses adversity as a fuel for getting better on his bike. I guess we all share the passion of never giving up and always wanting to progress, but Brendan does it in a way that would make the strongest people think maybe they aren’t as strong as they thought. If you have never seen Brendan ride, then you are missing out on one of the most talented riders I have ever seen. Brendan is currently out with a dislocated wrist and broken scaphoid sustained whilst doing this interview. So I want to wish him the best fastest recovery possible, cause it’s gonna be boring times without him around. Take care, RIDE4EVA, Gee

X park is home he hi st o r i c a l BMX in Austral Australars there must lus comps held lar takes us on Beenleigh eigh trip. It could be argued that the Beenleigh BMX park is home to many of the historical happenings in BMXinAustralia. Over the years there must have been 30 plus comps held there. Clint Millar takes us on the Beenleigh trip.

he first ever comp I was meant to enter was held at Beenleigh way back in 1988. It rained that day and the comp was moved to a shopping centre car park in Sunnybank. Trend BMX ran a bunch of comps at Beenleigh and this was where I entered my first ever Pro Mini ramp comp. Ryan Guettler’s mum ran a series of comps there too after we weren’t satisfied with Trend’s efforts. These were known as Sloth comps and were very fun indeed. After these comps disappeared I started up my own competition series called, Riders Comps. I guess this was the birth of rider ran comps in Australia and I ended up doing seven of these events. Colin Mackay’s first ever comp was one of mine and he placed 2nd for mini ramp in the beginner class. For his efforts he won $5 and a 2B homecooked clothing patch! Damien Nielsen from Trend also ran some more events at Beenleigh a few months apart from mine and these two series were some of the most anticipated and progressive riding events of their time. The declining condition of the park laid way to an absence of events held at Beenleigh for a few years. That was until the BBSAI came along and decided that we needed a comp series at Beenleigh once again. Mark Schneider gave birth to Heavy Metal Heroes #1 on the 19th September, 1999. Mark ran these events sometimes with much criticism on his choice of venue but pushed through and now has 12 of them under his belt.

In my opinion the latest HMH, being number 12, was one the best, if not the best ever. It was also very historical in that the old 7 foot steel mini ramp that has been there for around 15 years is about to be taken away by the council. I learnt so much of what I can do now on that ramp over the years and it will be sad to see it go. It was very fitting to see possibly the best ever mini ramp battle in Australia take place there on August 13th, 2005. We had 16 people in pro mini and the level of riding was just as high as any pro mini ramp event at the worlds. Seaton Spratt did his first ever double whip air, Matt Gannon did an amazing can can footjam on the 6 foot sub, Nick Richardson aired higher than everyone else put together and with more style than possible for a 16 year old. Chris Edgar pulled flairs to whip airs with ease, Nick Kajewski showed that

his riding is really coming of age with dialled runs full of tech and I was very happy that I pulled my first downside whip to nosepick on Australian soil. I also did my first ever downside whip airs! (I first tried them at Beenleigh on that ramp 10 years earlier) The comp was a very fitting way to farewell that legendary ramp. The street event was also of such a high standard of riding that we had a four way tie for 4th place. Nick Kajewski, Brendan Jones, Daniel Dunn and myself all ended up sharing in the $1,800 pro purse. Matt King finally ended up in the top three which was great to see, Matt is a very dialled and powerful rider with some of the best whip variations out there including wallride to whips. Macca is one of the most original riders out there and snagged himself 2nd.

Once again the ruler of HMH was non other than Shane Conlon. Shane had it “in her head” so to say and ruled even with a hangover. Dirt ended up being a battle between Perko and Shane Conlon, with each run they would try to out ride each other. This gave everyone a great display of what can be done with the ancient Beenleigh dirt jumps. Flip turndowns, double and triple truck drivers, whips and 360 whips were just some of the stand outs. The dirt comp wasn’t just all about those two though. Daniel Dunn did his new sponsor proud and pulled his first ever double whip for 3rd. Brad Doyle did some of the best 360’s in the business while Jed Mildon crossed the Tasman Sea with a very close flip whip for 5th place. Mark Schneider and myself continued our battle for dirt supremacy but I edged him out this time round. Good clean fun indeed. Jayde Kite once again proved that he is the master of bunny hopping with a 38-1/2 inch hop. This was down on his previous record tied with Corey Bohan of 41-1/2 inches. But the Odyssey Elementary stem was all his for the taking. Perko won the game of BMX flyout and also won the best trick comp on the box jump. I am not sure what he did to win on either but I am sure it involved a barspin or sixteen.

On a more personal note, Mark organised a minutes silence in memory and honour of Colin Winkleman, who had passed away just a few days earlier. It was really good to see the whole crowd of a few hundred people pay their respects in total silence. Colin will be dearly missed by the greater BMX community, rest In Peace Colin. Heavy Metal Heroes 12 marked an end of an era with the 7 foot mini and vert ramp / wallride structure both being set to be taken away shortly after the comp. It was also the first comp that we were able to offer great prizes along with a hefty pro purse. All this wouldn’t have been possible without the support of our sponsors. Orchid Footwear put up the bulk of the pro purse with DK bicycles not far behind. Bigdeal Clothing payed for the trophies as always and Odyssey, wethepeople, Snafu, Pryme, Shadow Conspiracy, Fly bikes and Macneil all helped out with prizes. A special mention also must go to Crossley Cycles who has been sponsoring these events from way back to my first comp in 1993. Plans are underway for a totally new look Beenleigh BMX park. Lets hope the council keep their word this time. For more info on the next HMH or what’s going on for the park, check out www.bbsai.org Make sure you put the effort in to be a part of BMX history and be there for the next one. You won’t regret it. It seems more and more riders are taking their riding to the world. In search of new horizons in both their riding and personal growth. These experiences ultimately shape the lives of those lucky or motivated enough to pack their bags and bike onto a jet plane and take off into the wider riding community. Following are a few different experiences from the last months by crew living the dream from far corners of the globe.

Taking in the Prague sights, Luke Fink//MILLAR

This was my fourth worlds and I must say it felt different to the others I have been to. I guess because it was in Prague as opposed to Cologne that made it feel so weird. Cologne almost feels like a second home to me after living there for a year and visiting there almost every year now since 2000. Don’t get me wrong, the worlds in Prague were a whole bunch of fun, it did feel weird though. Maybe it was the fact that not all my Australian friends were there this time. Last year in Cologne we had the biggest Australian turnout at any worlds in history. It definitely made for a good party that’s for sure. This years worlds just didn’t seem to have the same feel, some very good times for sure but it just felt empty in some way. One thing I did really enjoy was the sight seeing that Prague has to

52 2020bmxmag.com.au

offer. Prague is one of the most amazing older cities I have ever had the pleasure to visit. You really learn some respect on just how old Europe is compared to what we have here. Luke Fink, Seaton Spratt and myself spent one afternoon riding around the city taking in the sites on offer. Riding on the streets there was an experience in itself. The cobblestone streets make riding a BMX rather difficult to say the least but all the more fun.

John Heaton flair to double peg WTF//SEATON

The competition itself was smaller than years before. Not as many riders from around the world and smaller crowds of spectators made the comp feel very different. One thing that was no different to previous years was the level of riding. It amazes me every year to see how good everyone is, so much good riding went down that it almost all becomes a blur. Some of the standouts in my mind were... Morgan Wade, that guy is crazy and seems to have no regard for his own health with 14 foot airs on an 8 foot quarter pipe, tailwhip to icepicks on the sub of the mini ramp almost every go, curved wallride to whip out and oh so close to curved wallride to flair out. Morgan also does some of the best flairs out there like they’re nothing to him. He even rode my bike after his broke and showed it how to flair. Koji Kraft killed the mini ramp like no other and is now world champion. Original tricks like downside fastplant to toothpick bonks on the sub and the best decades over the spine earned him top honours. Alistair Whitton aired higher than everyone on the mini and killed the street course with huge transfers that stretched almost the whole length of the street course. Luke Fink did some of the most tech moves of the weekend. Favourites included his 270 to over ice and back on the jersey barrier as well as his toothpick to over 270 and over 270 to toothpick on the spine. Luke is good fullstop, almost too good. John Heaton pulled an amazing flair to double peg on the sub, so amazing to see in person after seeing it in the videos. Dave Osato always amazes me with the fact that he never rides practise, yet stills kills it in the comps. Dave lived by his motto, ‘qualifying is practise’ this time except for mini ramp. Minutes prior to starting some filmer got in his way while he was pumping the shit out of the spine ready for a huge air and they collided at full speed. Dave almost got knocked out and the photographer shaded away very hurt. Probably a good thing as Dave looked like he was going to kill the guy. Having Osato looking at you angry like that is enough to make anyone run with fear for your life. After all, he’s as big as a bear!

Ali Whitton massive spine air//SEATON

Hektor Garcia from Mexico is a name I hadn’t heard of before but all that changed once I saw him ride. He is such an amazing rider and is only 17 years old. Kids these days.... I don’t know. Huge 360 whips and 720’s were among his bag of tricks. Watch out for this kid if he can get some more travelling under his belt. Juan Ruiz is another lessor known rider who is set to turn some heads. Riding a fullface helmet showed he meant business with some of the burliest runs of the worlds. He also did one of my favourite moves with toothpick to hop over on the spine, a very hard trick that’s for sure. Sergio Layos is a name very familiar to everyone and for good reason, some of the best style in the world is what he is all about. He also makes his downside whip airs look way too easy. Sergio did the tailwhip transfer of the street comp, no one else even thought of jumping let alone doing a downside whip across it, Sergio is always fun to watch. Flatland was good to watch as it rained and they had to move it into the street course, this gave everyone no excuse but to watch it. Flatland has progressed so much since I did it that it’s almost impossible to imagine doing any of the stuff they do today. Full respect. I actually missed dirt but I heard Corey Bohan was killing it as always and did a new move for the worlds with a frontflip. Hannu Cools has a really cool name and really good riding to match. He did an awesome manual line in street on top of a curved wall to invert in, very nice. He also did an icepick on the subrail to hardway 270 out, which is a Hannuman original. I could go on forever here with everyone that did amazing things but that would also just all become a blur to read and comprehend. The best way to understand what actually goes down at the worlds is of course to get yourself to the next one. Start saving and get yourself that flight to where ever it is in 2006. I know I am going for sure, plus I want some more Australian’s there next year! Clint Millar

You work all year and get 4 weeks off, well I do and when I saw a return flight deal to San Fran for $1099 with 4 nights accommodation it was too hard to pass up. So this still left me with 3 more weeks of holiday up my sleeve so the next day I booked the cross connecting flight to NY seeing as I knew my way round and I knew it was a guaranteed good time. I roped in Dog and my dick head brother in for the ride and we were set. San Fran was as cold as the winter we had just left here in Brisbane and double the hills. The hotel was in a dodgy area where we hung out with crack heads and got some of them to sing us songs about heroin for dimes with some local brissy skaters that were on our plane and then stayed in the same hotel (peace Suz and Noah). Got to see all the classic skate spots along the water front piers, hubba, china town spots, bombing Lombard and the full pipe there that the locals took us to. But by far the best part was this bar that we got taken to where you were allowed to actually take your bike into the pub and hang it on the wall while you enjoyed a few drinks they need that type of thing out here. After spending 4 days in SF it was time to knock out to NYC. Landed in New York late at night and retreated to our luxury apartment in Uptown Harlem. The place we were at was in Harlem where you were the only white guys as far as you could see on the block and the crew there were not to be fucked with. The area there was real chilled though and it was the fact that it was the dealers who were keeping the blocks safe so that there was never any heat from the cops

60 2020bmxmag.com.au

ruining business. This meant that every morning we walked out and all these guys were real cool and never gave us any grief cept for the time Dog burped in front of a bunch of girls and they all started yelling at him “Dammm that white boyz naaaaasty”. But Harlem was real deal grimey in some parts and it’d be the best to dump a bunch of the little try hard 16yr old gangsters from Australia there and scare the fuck out of them when they saw how it really is. I had been to New York a year or so ago and it was an easy choice to book the rest of my time there once our time was up in SF. New York is a unique place like no other and I could recommend it to just about any one to go and check it out. Mainly due to the fact that you really don’t need to be a rider to have the craziest time in the big smoke with everything open and moving 24/7. On top of that are all the cool spots in and around the island and of course the newly reformed Brooklyn banks, Downtown and other random treats you find just pedalling around and getting lost. But better than any of the spots NY has to offer is riding around through the city with the locals who tear through at 100mph though the most insane traffic

conditions with cars constantly stopping and starting on the wrong side of the road, cab doors opening on you out of nowhere and random angry NY pedestrians always popping out from every corner ready to tell you what you shouldn’t be doing and why. At one point one of the locals rolled out in front of a four lane road with moving traffic with his hand out stopping all the traffic to make way for 20 kids on bikes passing through the intersection which was one of the craziest things ever. The best part is that the cops don’t really care too much bout what you’re doing there due to the fact that they’ve got bigger problems to take care of (some thing lacking with our local authorities). Looking back on things now I feel like I need a holiday from my holiday, in a town where you can go out for breakfast, go for a decent roll downtown, chill for a while then head back for dinner at midnight and then head out to a bar afterwards. So much to do and every thing waiting up late for you to do it. Keep eyes out for the vids coming out of NY later this year if what we saw was anything to go by it’ll be a good call. Thanks and peace to everyone there that took us out riding and drinking. LC

After pretty much growing up over the years watching videos, like headfirst and props, plus an endless list of reading material such as Ride and BMXPlus, you cant help but realise the states is a great place to visit for a BMX adventure. Everyone’s heard stories about Aussies going over and making it? Living the dream, which if that’s what your into cool! But we weren’t really on that program we were more interested in seeing some cool stuff, meeting some interesting people and definitely hitting some good riding spots along the way. Andy’s parents live in the states now so that was where we based ourselves, in good old Bloomington Indiana. Bloomington is about 45 minsdrivefromIndianapolisandisbasicallyahugeuniversitytownand when I mean huge the Uni is a town in itself and the sports stadiums resemble those of major cities in Australia. On the plus side this means street everywhere, the negative is that we got shut down by two cop cars, a Sheriff and the Dean of the college on our first day riding. They didn’t really appreciate us grinding that nice kinked ledge and we were too dumb to realise the Dean was watching us in a big pimping truck in the car park across from us (idiots?) Anyway with the Aussie accent cranked up a few notches and a kangaroo story under the belt followed by a few Crikeys thrown in for good measure we ended up avoiding a mass fine or jail and were just asked to leave right away. To tell you the truth Australians can get away with so much over there just because once the find out your an Aussie they are like “I want to go there one day I love Australia”. Inthe4weeksweweretherewehitIndianapolis,Chicago,Clevelandand thebigapple,NewYork, plusafewsportsinbetween.NewYorkwasone of the highlights for sure. From being amazed at the amount of people everywhere to the size of the “Ground Zero” hole, to dodging traffic and pedestrians while rolling around the streets on our bikes or running up ridiculousbartabsin veryshortamountsoftime,NYCwasamazing. We managed to hook up with the Animal Bikes guys, they were super cool and went out of their way for some dumb Aussie kids like us. Chicago was another cool place we hit, from getting caught near a twister on the way in, to having a swing at baseball with an all girls team, watching in disbelief as Crog was unknowingly hit on by a gay Mexican guy and riding a big concrete park with Kevin Porter, Chicago was definitely a fun city. The states isn’t all bright lights and the land of dreams, it has its flaws also, forinstance“NoBikesAllowed”issomethingyougetusedtoseeing a lot over there. Also things might seem cheap sometimes until you work out the conversion rate then it can sting a bit. Plus its not all the O.C.orSexAndTheCity,timesthedodgyplacesherebyliketenandyou have an idea of some of the places you will see, you really have to pay attention and watch yourself. Its got its places you don’t go if don’t want togetbeatuporworse, remembertheStateshassomeveryrelaxedgun laws, shityoucanbuygunsatKmart!Withsomanypeopleheadingover there these days and with so much media documentation, via DVD’s, mags and the internet I’m not going to bother with all the who did this or check this latest insane trick. WehadBloomingtonsussed, withinaweekwewereknowneverywhere as the Aussie guys from bouncers to bar tenders to locals, lets just say it had its benefits..... My suggestion is if your thinking of planning a BMX adventure to the USA or anywhere for that matter, make sure you open your eyes a bit wider than the pages of RideBMX, by all means ride your ass off but don’t limit every experience to two wheels, there is a big world with a lot of cool shit to see and do. Dave Struthers, an Auckland local, has been living it up in Canada for the past year and a half or so, and we thought it was “high time” we caught up with him to see how things are going over there... The first things first, name, age, years riding.. Dave Struthers, 21, prody bout 7 freestyle, but ridden a bike since I can remember. Where and when abouts did you start riding? Jumping ditches down the street, to making ratty jumps on the lawn, raced for a little, but I think I was already into jumps too much, and just pretty much kept riding the whole time, and now its now. What made you decide to make the journey to Canada the first time? Well I’d already been once when I was like 11 with my family, cause my mum’s from there. Tim (White) said he was going and I thought what a great idea, so I just saved and went with a bike this time and it was dope! What’s the riding scene like over there at the moment Pretty good I think, everyone’s pretty chill. What are the major differences between the riding over there to here? The ramps at the parks are ALOT bigger, maybe not so many young kids are into it. What are you doing for work at the moment? Just doing construction, its sweet, too hot in the day to ride anyway, and I gotta pay the bills. What’s your local bar like? I think I hang out in my lounge more then my local bar

You recently had some friends from NZ come to visit, (Wazzman, Mike lips, Chipmunk, Cousin Karl) how was that? It was sweet, nice to see my mates, I think they had a good time, no one ever wants to leave though! What do you think of the rumours of Brad (Pitt) and Angelina (Jolie) adopting a baby girl, and now perhaps getting married? If it produces pics of Angelina naked, I’m all for it!! Who, what when, whatever, plays the most important part in your riding at the moment? Friends, chillness, bike, spots. If you were an animal, what animal would you be and why? I think that you would be a werewolf.... That’s what everyone says, f-u, I’d be a cat cause cats are sweet, and they get to just chill all day and drink milk. When are you thinking of heading back to NZ? January, maybe for new years, I cant wait. Thanks? Mum & dad most of all, Paul and Rick (Struthers), Jen, The Readys, Tim White, Wazzman, Haimona, Dave Manconi, Phil Urwin, Mario, Mike lips, Karl and Chippa, Mike D, zombie-flesh-eaters.co.nz, Helldogs, 20/20 Everyone else, you know, thanks for everything, you’re all really nice people.

This is my second trip to Greenville North Carolina, and as some people might call it “Pro Town”. But there’s more to it than that. Brenno my friend from home, and I had been staying with Colin Mackay for about a week, and were in Greenville for about 1 month so we were digging into our Greenville leg. Colin had ideas for small road trips to Atlanta and Woodward Camp in PA and also to go check out a small park in a place called Nags Heads and as Colin would say “rough it for the night”. Nags Heads is about 3 hours out of Greenville, on a small strip of land called the Outer Banks. We started talking about it and before you know it, Brenno, Colin and I headed to Wal-Mart to stock on sleeping bags, a tent and other things needed for “roughing it”. We talked to Rob the night before we left about our plans and our crew ended up being Colin, Brenno, Rob, Lilly and myself. Rob and Lilly met us at Colin’s and we were on the Road by 12pm headed for Nags Heads. The drive out to Nags was pretty interesting from an Australian perspective. You really got to see the old farming country of NC with old run down houses, rusty old cars in front yards, and sleepy quiet little towns. I found out that there is another way to get to Nags that takes you through untouched forests and is supposed to be a bit nicer, maybe next time. We finally got to Nags Heads and it was time to find this park and ride. It is part of a YMCA so you have to pay to ride. Something you don’t have to do much back home. It ended up being $10 each which was a bit steep, but the park looked fun with a huge cement bowl and a wooden street section. The bowl was insane, it was big

tight and super steep. Most of us found ourselves just trying to go as fast as we could to carve around the thing and just ended up getting lost. There are so many lines in this bowl it’s great. Colin though, found a spot in the bowl and just blasted it. The street section was pretty average and some stuff was placed in odd spots. Everyone seemed to just nibble around but ended up having a good time. We took some photos and filmed a bit and called it a day once the park was closing. It gets dark pretty late so around 7pm as the sun was setting we had to hit the road and find a place to camp before it got dark. After a bunch of failed attempts at finding a good place to camp for the night, we ended up finding a cool place to set up. With beer, hot dogs, hamburgers and music, it was a fun laid back night. We woke up the next morning packed up camp and hit the road. Before heading back to Greenville we wanted to do the tourist thing so we went to Kitty Hawk, where the first flight was made by the Wright brothers over 100 years ago. It was very interesting and good to just cruise around and check all that out with friends. The Nags Heads trip was only 2 days but it was a super fun trip and it worked out to be a lot more fun then I expected. It’s amazing how stuff works out when you only have a loose plan and just hit the road. If there is somewhere that you have heard about and have thought about going, then get some friends together and go do it. It will end up being fun in one way or another. Nitai Brendan Hanson//NITAI

topside icepick Icepicks are sweet, but topside icepicks are the shizzle and then some. They are a bit of a power move and need some speed to make it all happen smooth and buttery.

With Brendan Jones 1. Ride upto the ramp with a little more speed you

would have for a regular double peg grind, only other difference is that you are going the opposite way to your normal grind.

2.

As your front wheel hits the coping start to turn the bike, you can pull a funny face (like Brendan) but also keep your weight well in over the transition, you don’t want to get any where near flying out onto the deck.

3. As your back wheel hits the coping straighten your

legs and push the back wheel out over the coping, if you are leaning in enough you peg will hit the coping, if not you will just get a tyre slide, but hey that’s cool too. You might want to put your back brakes on so that you know your tyre is going to slide, but that’s maybe personal preference.

4.

Once your peg hits the coping you can try and grind it for a bit, you’re probably just going to get a tink though.

5.

Now you need to pull that back wheel back over the coping, so bend your knees and suck that back wheel back into the ramp.

6. Roll away smooth!

AIR on a Ramp Remember, you gotta put in some hard yards whatever the trick you wanna learn is! Let us know if there’s a trick you’ve been trying to nail for the last year and just can’t hit. We’ll get someone who does know it inside out to word it up for you in an up coming issue of 2020bmxmag. Simply email howto@2020bmxmag.com.au with your question.

nine inch nails hordern pavilion Aug 05

To say this release cannot be pigeonholed is an underestimation of the highest order. Of Montreal are part electro pop- part Kinks revival and part sixties style tunes beefed up with electronic beats. This is a great release that shows a really eclectic mix of avant garde styles that mesh together really well into a totally listenable package. The album takes a darker dive as it progresses towards more relationship gone sour type themes. If you’re looking to expand your musical tastes to new areas you could do a lot worse than check out the second release from Of Montreal who are actually from Athens, GA. Jamie Moore

Nine Inch Nails have to be one of the most influential bands of all time, well perhaps its mainly Trent Reznor? But NIN were responsible for taking the underground industrial sound to a larger and more mainstream audience. Bands like Cabaret Voltaire (www.brainwashed.com/cv) and Throbbing Gristle (www.throbbing-gristle.com). NIN have been one of my favourite bands for a long time and I have seen them play live before so I was excited to be heading to the Hordern for another serve. I missed the support band but after grabbing a drink outside headed in to the packed Hordern just in time to hear the opening track “The Frail”. Trent, being the perfectionist that he is, had the sound dialled and put on a flawless performance with the play list covering the whole NIN discography. From the early “Pretty hate machine” tracks like “Sin” and “Terrible Lie” to the current album “With Teeth” the crowd loved it all. All the old favourites were covered, including “March of the Pigs”, “Something I Can Never Have”, “Closer” and a personal favourite of mine “Hurt”, (check the Johnny Cash cover of this too if you get a chance), as well as a stack of tracks from the new album, which I’m sure will become favourites in a short while. The final track was “Head like a hole” and although there was no encore, the crowd left happy with a solid 2 hour set of NIN tunes ringing in their ears. Mike Daly

Travelling interstate to see one of your heroes is nothing new for me, so I packed my bags and headed down to Canberra for a cold night of beats and scratching. August saw Mix Master Mike travel to Australia for the second time in under a year. This time minus his front men, the Beastie Boys. The setup was simple, two turntables and an Apple G4, but after a few minutes you knew exactly why he had won multiple DMC turntable championships, released a number of solo albums, is considered the top of his game and all of this before joining one of the most successful hip-hop acts in history. This latest solo tour was definitely an exercise in partying. Sure, technically speaking when it comes to scratching and beat juggling, he is nearly impossible to fault, but these skills can only hold the attention of most audiences for a short period of time. This night however, the crowd were glued to his every move and every beat were put into top speed with the crowd singing along and lapping it up. that came from the speakers. Not confined to old school, which would have been expected, the After the set finished, sweat dripping from everyone in the venue, set featured such tracks as ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ by Nirvana Mike was escorted over to the merchandise stand to sign shirts and (which 14 years after it’s release still whips the crowd into a frenzy), talk to fans, proving that he is the most accessible full time Beastie ‘Killing In The Name’ by Rage Against The Machine, ‘Organ Donor’ in the group. by DJ Shadow, ‘Block Rockin Beats’ by the Chemical Brothers, and ‘Seven Nation Army’ by The White Stripes. Of course Mike couldn’t get away with playing a set without featuring some Beastie Boys cuts, so classics like ‘Brass Monkey’ and ‘No Sleep Till Brooklyn’

76 2020bmxmag.com.au

It’s safe to say that I doubt anyone left that night without a smile on their face. You hardly even noticed the freezing Canberra weather, well nearly. As the Beastie’s put it “Nobody can do, Like Mix Master can!” AstroBBoy

Upon hearing of a band that had toured the US and Canada but not yet garnered a major label contract, I was immediately interested. Hailing from the less than musically unified east coast metropolis of Philadelphia (the self proclaimed fattest city in America) it was interesting to read in their press release that all of the band work together in the VEGIE friendly supermarketWhole foods. Their sound is a very radio friendly blend of various eclectic bands with their own record collections ranging from Iron Maiden to the Gang of Four, you know that diversity is going to be high here. This is a very interesting release that is getting more than its fair share of abuse in my G4 of late, it might not get you shaking in your boots, but sometimes you need something that is not so straight up (Especially the older and saltier you get). This is a rock solid release that will surely grow on you and with the amount of interest being shown in Interpol of late that probably means loads of you will be willing to have it grow on you too. The sections feature a New Zealand road trip, Aus Trade Show mini ramp demos, Zack Musarsa and Mick Bazand Bio’s and a Melbourne City mix section. The NZ road trip was from Dan Montoya, LC, Marcus, Rusty and Smileys, trip last year and has a bunch of good footage, mostly street with a little park. The Bio’s are great, especially Mick’s with a heap of good street spots from Melbourne and some awesome riding. All up a good video with a definite Melbourne street focus, check it out. Mike D

The riding is good with a mix of street, park and dirt, although there are quite a few tricks that could have been left on the cutting groom floor. orchid step on it

www.orchidshoes.com 25 minutes + extras The Orchid Team DVD was the result of an epic road trip from Utah to British Columbia, which is just over the Canadian border above Seattle. Probably what made me love this DVD the most was the fact that I drove nearly the exact same route about 2 years ago, cept only had a week to do it instead of the Orchid teams 3 weeks... All up, some amazing country (all the places you don’t see on TV) and some seriously solid riding from the force Orchid have assembled to represent their soles to the world... Short top tube riders will blow chunks at Steven Hamilton’s gap attempts. Van Homan freaks will as usual be suitably impressed, Shawn Arata and Brian Wizerski throw down and of course Corey Martinez unleashes as per usual. Not a long DVD at 25 mins, but jam packed with the almost trademark creativity that Orchid represents. Holmes

Building the Underground has been around for a while but has only just got Aus distribution. Mike from TripleSix was wording it up big time to me after watching it multiple times because it covered the huge northwest Californian/Oregon trails scene. So I sat down and watched it. Free from any superstars and hitech production, BTU is much like videos form 10 years back. Straight up big riding, period. From the hella developed trails to full pipes you wish you knew existed and parks that can only exist in the US, the riding is varied but always returns to the dirt. Mike wrote the most solid review ever and emailed it across and I deleted it with the endless porn spam we get. Sorry Mike! The DVD is rockin and makes me want to ride uncut Slam bars forever. Well worth a watch, especially if trails make your world turn. Holmes

Colin headed out to Australia a few years back to be a part of the Road Warriors journey/comp series we put on. Everyone on the trip holds an awesome or ridiculously funny memory from Colin’s presence//CRISPY

goodbye colin As everyone is no doubt aware by now, on Thursday the 11th of August a tragic thing happened when Colin Winkelman took his own life. It was a complete shock to me as I’m sure it was to everyone. Colin has always been at the forefront of the BMX scene for both his amazing riding ability and also his personality and great humour. You were hard pressed to ever see Colin not laughing or thinking of new pranks or inventions to make, usually involving explosions, he was an incredible guy. I’ve always admired his career starting from the early Props videos. I remember issue 14 where I saw him in a jumping comp that he won and he told me that he didn’t even pull one trick. Also when he 360’d every jump in the rhythm at Woodward to the cheers of so many campers. They were cheering because it was an awesome run, but I think they were going spastic because it was Winkelman and no doubt he had befriended most of them, they were stoked to see their mate ruling those difficult jumps. I only knew him from videos until I went to the States and was fortunate enough to meet him and realised he was just an ordinary guy. We were always hanging out and going out to dinner, watching his favourite movie ‘The Jerk’ and more recently discussing new episodes of ‘The Family Guy’, not what I would have expected from a superstar, not that he ever saw himself as one. Then one day I needed a knee reconstruction and I was without a job or any income, Steve Morissey lent me the money for it and somehow Colin found out about it and starting e-mailing everyone he knew, most of whom didn’t know

me, asking them to chip in to help me out. I was stunned that he took such initiative just to help me out. He sent me nearly $1500 and had a lot of messing about to get it to me, all I could say was thanks, he just said “No problem”. His funeral was held in Greenville where over 200 people attended his local skatepark, Jaycee park, including some big names and even more people sent letters saying goodbye and apologising for not being able to be there. That’s quite a large turn out and reflective of the type of person Colin was and the effect he had on people. Afterwards everyone went back to Jeremy Fanberg’s house for a Destroyerfest, which Colin founded and was also extremely fond of. I’ve been hearing rumours about how he died that involve his motorcycle and all I will say is it’s not true. I won’t go into it more because I know all his friends and loved ones want everyone to remember the good times not the bad. So I guess this is farewell to a friend and fellow rider. His best friend Vicky just wanted to thank everyone who attended the funeral or wrote in or just anyone that put Colin in their thoughts and prayers. Kamp clothing is doing a T-shirt for him, which you can get from www.Kampclothing.com. It is an absolute tragedy but I will always remember the good times. Goodbye Colin. Kenny Raggett
