The killer soundtrack came about thanks to:
Dyno, Orchid Footwear, Federal, Steadfast dvd mag, Fuel TV, Volatile Visions, Focal Point, Martial Clothing, Coalition, Emancipate, Triple Six, Kickassbmx and Stowaway Distribution.
hindsight 2 was produced with the support of the following companies:
To all the riders, filmers, final cut gurus, photographers, wives, girlfriends, families, distributors, shops, zines, jam organizers, companies and crew who support BMX, you all rule. without you, hindsight 2 and 2020bmxmagazine would never have made it this far.
We got such a good response to the first DVD that we had to get number two rolling. hindsight 2 is the 25 fps extension of 2020bmxmagazine with comps, scenes, trips and interviews, all of which are a snapshot of 20inch right here, right now. We’re stoked on it as it’s a time capsule of Aus BMX, and like last time, it’s free with the mag. So, it must be time to kick back, crank the bass and unwind to the hour and a half of riding that is hindsight 2.
We made a big call this year. Not one, but two DVD’s. Why? Simply because there is more 20inch going on in Australia than ever before and we couldn’t fit it all into one DVD.

let it ride
Vegas is a place like no other. 24-7, the place is open for business. Namely the business of taking your hard earned dollars in anyway possible. Thankfully, the place is also host to some pretty epic events that give a little back, and in the case of the Vans Let it Ride comp, a hell of a lot back to a lucky invited crew of riders. Hardrock Casino is located a fair hike off the ‘Strip’ which means it’s a lot more tolerable and has an air of cool about it. Picture the parking lot filled with more dirt than you’ve ever seen sculpted into two huge sets of doubles, bigger than anything preceeding them... On the exclusive invite only list were four well known Aussies, namely Ryan Guettler, Colin Mackay, Luke Parslow and Cam White who would step up for their share in the 30grand + prize purse on offer for the couple of hours riding. In a knockout format, the riders went head to head from a random draw, winning riders from each heat advancing. Without going into a trick by trick wrap, lets just say the runs were out of control and so were the finals with Cam White pulling 3rd place with the likes of triple whips, Luke Parslow in 2nd with flip whips to front flips bigger than anyone plain aired and of course Ryan Guettler stepped it up another notch with a 360 drop in off the 5 metre high tower into a front flip followed by a tyre grab 720. Yo. Shit got crazy. And that was before the best trick jam... Too much to write was thrown down and the event was unbelievable, it was more like watching someone play Hoffman ProBMX on the Playstation with voodoo like results. Mindblowing. For the lowdown, check out the Let it Ride section in hindsight 2. Some sick business...

The Wildman is Todd Lyons signature frame, now available as a complete bike here in Aus. It’s a dirt and street inspired cromo creation built tough from the ground up. And before you go saying whats a racer doing in 2020bmxmag, know that Todd Lyons was hand-planting street spines and nose manualing (as good as Steve Hamilton) at street comps back in 91! With Ryan Guettler on the team, SE Racing has upped the ante and is becoming a force to be reckoned with. The Wildman retails at $799. Available in through GX Imports. To win, simply answer this question correctly: Q: Name the Australian dirt and park ruler who rides for SE Racing? aus vs usa tradeshows We hit both the US and Aussie tradeshows, this year so we figured we'd put em toe to toe. Prepare to witness an epic battle of two superpowers of the bike industry. Sort of.. Interbike is one hell of a crazy place to go. It’s the biggest bike industry get together on the planet. All taking place in the biggest building your ever likely to enter. For example, being that the show was only a couple of blocks from our pad, we decided to walk. Of course 40° heat and blocks multiple kilometers long tend to burn you out early. Add to the mission having to walk the snake like maze thru a casino (45min walk) to get into the show and you were buggered before you even started to tackle the endless avenues of bikes and paraphernalia. Unless you’ve got a real plan of what you gotta get done at Interbike, expect to lose hours (possibly days) wandering in an artificially lit labyrinth of the best and the worst of what the modern day bike industry has to offer. There are distractions, like hella bombshell surgically enhanced promo girls (lycra does have it’s place) and of course free beer from like minded BMX company crew. Plus you could always bail for a table of Texas Hold ‘em to ease your mind... For hype, bling, promo booty, beer on tap and a dedicated BMX area aptly named ‘Little Amsterdam’, Interbike has got the goods to be the show of the year. We gave it 7.5 outta 10 Now, in stark contrast to the awesomely overstated debauch that Vegas leaks out of it’s sweltering belly, the Sydney tradeshow is an almost religious affair. Well maybe it was? With light streaming in from the skylights, I swear it looked like those churches on TV I saw in the US with dudes pushing people over and then reaming 'em for cash! But I digress. While a few major players in the bike industry don’t play the tradeshow game (cause it’s way too expensive to be a part of!), there was still a solid turn out. There was some confusion and an air of contempt for the organizers when the Aus version of the BMX zone didn’t eventuate. So the assorted 20inch industry types (including us) were forced to share the space with the likes of half scooter, half bike, half alligator vehicles and lycra headband manufacturers (maybe they should set up at the Motley Crue show at Homebush for better results?). It’s seems pretty simple to me, that the slick, lycra tour de franz type of peoples want no part of the dirty BMXers and the 20inch crew are despised by the roady stand operators they wander past, and it’s only the MTB crew who can kind of mingle in between the dark and the light with any immunity. Still, there was a ramp. And some shit hot riding went down! I probably sound like a bitch (see alcoholic), but beer was ‘banned’. Low blow. I love it when a morals of a minority rear their ugly heads to screw others way of life! What else... Oh there was a MTB v’s SCOOTER v’s RECUMBENT v’s INLINE v’s BMX race on a man made mound of dirt that was kinda special. Special like mentally challenged. Ah well, at least a BMXer won... Of course, being a patriotic Aussie rider (and in completely sleep deprived bitch mode), I still gotta stand up for our show. Well kinda. With actual riding (not just talking about bikes) taking place and a kick arse ramp on hand, the new location was a much better venue than Sydney has had before. However, with no BMX section and no beer, it was a long, long weekend!
eastern demos
Amazing would be the best way to describe the Eastern Bikes demo that took place during the Bicycle Tradeshow on the second last weekend of October. It was a treat to watch everyone shred the ramp. Some highlights include Leigh Ramsdell rolling off the back of the deck, narrowly missing the trials setup and somehow landing on his feet, Mick Bayzard’s no handed to no footed flip over the street spine, Pete Radivo destroying everything (http://www.myspace. com/nickrichardson <3’s Pete Radivo) and watching Clint Millar and Randy Brown ride - If you were lucky enough to see them ride you would understand why! The last demo was incredible, with everyone going nuts, some serious stuff went down. If the photos don’t make it into the mag then keep an eye out for it in the next 2020 DVD, definitely jaw dropping stuff! A big thanks to everyone who rode, Eastern and everyone who helped put on the event! Paul Kim

monster opening
Oh my god, like, I was at this like MTV party like at this skatepark and like my picture was like in the paper, thank god I wore my Gucci dress that night... BMX, it's so hot right now... Monster Park opened it’s doors recently with a kick arse party for riders, skaters, super models, paparazzi, suits and the odd famous head. MTV hosted the festivities with the free beers, champas and of course Red Bull vodka’s* keeping the amassed crowds toasty in the at times hurricane like winds! It was a crazy night which has signed in a new era in Sydney riding and was also a milestone in the evolution of the class of female casting their eyes in the direction of the ‘not so dirty anymore’ BMXer whose style, poise and general punk as fuck attitude is ‘so hot right now’. Whilst Paris Hilton didn’t show (something about a small dog being stuck in a bodily part) the cream of Sydney’s party scene partied on alongside the riders with vert and spine demos by both riders and skaters before the Living End rocked out. DJ Peril (who you should know has 20inch heritage) cranked the decks to finish up the night and slowly but surely everyone headed home with barely an incident to bring the spirit down. Security and bouncers take note, Monster’s security for the night were pretty damn chill even with the at times crazy antics going on. All up, a great start to what has got to be the best facility of it’s kind this side of Woodward. If the first Sunday night 20inch session was anything to go by, BMX is blowing up, the place was packed and the level of riding is going nowhere but up. Holmes (intro by Critter!)

the backbone of bmx?
There is nothing like walking into a good BMX shop. It’s like being let loose in a candy store. I stopped by Backbone BMX to have a chat with shop owner and trail-digging dirtbag Rhys Williams about the reasons behind starting up Canberra’s first 100% BMX only shop. What was your original inspiration to get Backbone BMX up and running? I guess the main reason was that there was nowhere in Canberra to purchase the good stuff. You have been able to get some decent parts here and there but nobody was really specializing in BMX only. There have been riders working at some of the bike shops in Canberra before and that’s great because it’s good to deal with someone who rides and knows about riding but the difference with my shop is that I hold all the cards when it comes to ordering stuff. That means I can provide a good mix of high-end parts and some good cheaper alternatives without compromising on quality. Starting a shop was a ten-minute decision that came into my mind and it just wouldn’t leave so here I am...
If riders keep supporting overseas mail-order companies then they are just helping to build a really
What hassles did you encounter getting the shop going?
I can fully understand people trying to save a few dollars on a frame or whatever. But just say you bent
In the beginning I thought it would be just a matter of buying some parts, renting a shop then Boom Boom!! But there was definitely a lot of red tape to get through in dealing with real estate agents, insurance brokers and even some of the distributors. Trying to get them to believe I was legitimate was a bit of a hassle. But there were distributors who made it easy for me and that was really helpful.
your bars and you needed a new pair in order to go riding that day. It would suck to go to the local shop
Did you do any business training or did you just jump in the deep end of the business world?
area then maybe we could accomplish that sort of thing in Australia.
I’ve been a plumber for ten years and I have been doing my own bookkeeping and whatnot over that period. I also did a business course that was one hour per week for seven weeks so I know it all basically (Laughs!!). To be honest I jumped in not really knowing what I was in for but that’s how I do things and I am happy to learn from experience and deal with problems as they pop up. Nothing is really that hard. I suppose it helps to have a business that revolves around something that you are passionate about? Yeah! The main reason I figured that I could pull the whole thing off was that next year I will have been riding for 25 years and over that time I have been fixing my own bike and helping friends fix their bikes. I’ve seen riding evolve and a lot of parts come and go so even though I have never worked in a bike shop before the passion and experience are definitely there. To survive most business enterprises have to evolve and grow. What plans do you have for the future of Backbone?
good scene in whatever town that company exists in. Unfortunately that’s not doing anything for the local scene in Australia. I feel there is more at stake here than a few extra bucks in your pocket. Would you agree with that?
only to find that it has closed down due to not being able to pay the rent. That’s what happens through a lack of support. Riders might watch a dvd and see footage from some amazing scene overseas and then complain about how we don’t have anything like that here. With a little bit of support in the right So the local shop can then become the hub of the whole scene? Backbone has only been open about a month and already I have been approached by the local government who would like to fund some comps or jams. Now if I can keep in contact with them and try to play by their rules there may be some good things in store for Canberra. There are guys in the government who are more than keen to build additions to skateparks and hopefully that will open the door for some dirt parks as well. That sounds like a good sign for the future. Who were the main people who helped you get to where you are now with the shop? Jamie (Moore) from Stowaway was a big help at the start. I had talked with him about the problem of not being able to get good parts even though there was a demand for quality parts here in
These days you need to have a website and mail-order so that is in the works. I don’t know that much about the internet but everyone seems to be right into that nowadays. A bit further down the track if all goes well I would like to be able to support a team of riders and promote the shop that way. Another thing I would like to help change is the lack of events in Canberra. There are a few jams and contests here and there but I don’t think there are enough events promoting BMX in a positive way so I would like to get more things going. I know it’s only a shop but from the position I am in now I would like to use the shop as way to unify the scene and make more happen in the local scene.
Canberra and he was more than keen to help me get going. All my friends (they know who they are)
You need the support of the local riders for that to happen but there is a trend towards buying parts from US mail-order companies at the moment. How do you feel about that?
out a bunch as well. Mike Daly was an inspiration too. He does a lot of work for BMX in Australia
18 2020bmxmag.com.au
inspired me to get something going by reaffirming that doing a shop was a good idea. That was important to me because after riding for so long I didn’t want to feel like I was selling out by doing something that would make money out of riding. That wasn’t the motivation at all. It’s a fine line you know. I have waited my whole life to go to a shop like this in Canberra and it seems there are some things you just have to do yourself to make them happen. My dad and my girlfriend have helped me and was behind me from the start. Interview + photos Jamie Mahon

('My daddy owns a black 7 series BMW, a silver 5 series and my house is worth 2.97 million dollars'). I have also just returned home from what can only be described as a super random evening. Just when I thought I’d had enough, I had more. And damn was it good. Two lovely souls were wedded today, I photographed it. A friend of mine had a farewell party this evening, in which one of my school mates was the head honcho bar maid at this certain establishment. Quiet 2 for 1 beverages were consumed amid other 'my daddy owns A black 7 series BMW, a silver 5 series and my house is worth 2.97 million dollars' broads and 'I wish my daddy owned a black 7 series BMW, a silver 5 series and my house is worth 2.97 million dollars' type broads. I split and cruised home courtesy of the awesome titty assassin. Whilst I sung along to my favourite song, ‘you’ve lost that loving feeling’ I felt like shit. Jaded memories burning in my heart, along with so many pathetic drunk people, slurring their words and girls stumbling over their high heels, I realized that something was missing. I arrived home, donned my rad black hoodie and proceeded into the night. Don’t fuck with Olds Park. This was my intended destination, alas; the lure of the 24 hr pub, its charm, grace and charisma led me wildly astray. Not for purpose of drowning in alcohol, more so for the live action reality viewing I so enjoy on prime time television everyday... Think about it. A pub that almost never closes, with a clientele that defines the local bogan pisshead pub culture in Australia. It’s a fucking shithole. 'You can pick up heaps easy ay mate...' After spinning shit to the meat axe bouncers, I ride off enroute to my destination, I run into some of random friends of mine. This is where the random junkie moles from Newcastle come in. My random friends pull over and the shit is shot. Two sketchy and I must emphasis sketchy broads emerge from this fine establishment screaming profanities at each other and the meat axes, which delights my entourage immensely. For the next 20 minutes, the moles are engaged in cursing one another (at high volume) over whether to go home with two locals, whom have their SS Ute parked rock star style at this pub. ‘Fark you Trisha, I just wanna av some farkin fun. Carm on, are we goin or not.’ By this time the 711 workers have joined us, along with other street dwellers in administering abuse from across the street. ‘Show us your landing strip’, ‘Show us your front bum’, ‘Get em’ out ‘etc... The ute drives off and the meat axes escort the moles to the middle of the street (which, is an ideal place to get rid of moles should you ever need too...) unfortunately no road trains came through. The moles approach us and proceeded to claim that we are ‘goths’ and she 'aint scared of no goths' as we are all wearing black and the hot emo chicks are hot emo chicks. Time for the gothbusters. The police are called by meat axe command as by this time one of the moles is irate as all hell. Off tap completely, she will not settle. Her friend walks off and irate mole turns to us ‘goths’ and says in a calm and relaxed manner 'I’m not angry' then turns to the car next to her and starts straight edge dancing the shit out of the 4x4 parked next to us. After 7 or 8 punches she stops to reveal a solid dent in the wheel arch. We are half wetting ourselves and half thinking, 'WTF is the deal here?' Turns out that the 4x4 is a meat axe’s vehicle and they strut over to start administering head butts.

Waiting for the fuzz to arrive, one of the lads pulls out of his boot a mini lead guitar + amp + mic + a plastic lay down keyboard mat, like a miniature version of the one Tom Hanks played in the movie BIG, and asks ‘Who wants to do Highway To Hell with me’ and proceeds to rock the hell out on his guitar while his mate holds the mic to the speaker and hot emo chick busts out on the keyboard.. Its now getting pretty David Lynch... The cops turn up whilst ‘My Sharona’ is being strummed, and I can’t help but wonder that if I decided to go to bed when I got home, I would’ve never seen all this action. At any second, the cops could start popping caps in asses, a string could break, or worse still, matey boy could start doing simple plan covers. The cops put the moles in a maxi taxi as another crack head emerges from the depths on some poor kids 24 inch, to which he proudly announces, ‘ I stole it 3 weeks ago mate. Check it out mate; it’s a sick bike mate, $5. Wanna buy it?' In amongst all this bogan action, sweet guitar sounds and hot emo chicks, my mind is momentarily taken away from the ball of fury that rages inside me. Reality sinks back in and I’m ready to snap someone or something. I decide to get outta there, destination, Olds Park. Guided by the needy feeling of solitude and long manuals on the netball courts, I arrive and am somewhat relieved. The darkness of the shadows and glimmer of the moonlight provide the perfect ambience needed for the session and for my soul. Countless days of my life have been spent at this park, first airs, first fufanus etc. Its no Menai or Bass Hill, though its that place where no matter what’s going down, what time it is or who your thoughts are with, you can always go and have a roll. No kids, no noise, no moles from Newcastle... Now I don’t ride everyday, I don’t know what the latest BB size is or what size pants are hot right now. Though I do know this. The sound of my cassette hub and tyres rolling on those netball courts under moonlight and silence is the best thing in the world. It cures most ailments. As my sessions are few and somewhat far between, I’m always so psyched to be on my bike. Be it at 2:30 am on the sabbath, just illin by myself, or boosting gutters on the way to work or sessions at the new monster park... To me, that’s what its about. I have lost a thing or two from this love of the 4130, you see, some people don’t want to take the time to understand you, to communicate. They just shut you out cold. Odd that is... That bloody bike, it’ll get you nowhere. It’ll ruin your life; you’ll lose girlfriends, lose your job and be looked down upon by the greater gods of western consumer society. You’ll witness random crazy people (see above) doing random crazy things... Better yet, you’ll find the one thing that will inspire you beyond all means, give you direction and peace. Most of all though, its super rad. So go on, get a car, get a job you hate, don’t express yourself, conform, disconnect, fuck, consume, go bald and die. I’m in it for the long haul. Don’t riff my chill fuckers. 4130, down for life. Servus Chris
gallivant around on the web Thank god for link pages on bmx sites. Without them I’d have to sift through a heap of pages full of search results that mainly consist of cheats for Dave Mirra BMX on the Playstation. That game is a curse for those trying to find cool sites on search engines (go type “freestyle BMX” into Google and see for yourself). But like I said, BMX sites have link pages, and from dead sites I still find links to active ones. So as promised in last issue, back to B-M-X...
bay area bmx www.bayareabmx.com The Deal: From San Francisco’s bay area comes great music, the Golden Gate bridge and a bit of bmx. And that “bit of bmx” is good solid riding. It’s your usual scene site with riders ripping up their local spots like only they can. There’s enough pictures there to keep you happy, but there could be more. Two complaints on that point though, they’re located in a great area of SF, I’d like to see more picturesque high res photos. And to get rid of those damn watermarks, it ruins the pic. On the video front, they present only a handful and a couple of them are old, but worth checking out since they show very cool riding. Hit it up and tag it up.
ride to live www.ridetolive.net The Deal: I often ask the question of who a photographer is trying display, the riders skills or their own photography skills. So to sum this site up, it’s Brian Chace’s photography site of bmx, not bmx with photography (If you understand what I’m trying to say, I don’t entirely). You get great photos here though, but it’s a photography site, I want to see those skills in high resolution. They’re great and all, but come on, I wanna see them un altered and raw. It’s cool if you like that thing though.
declaim flatland www.declaim.co.uk The Deal: I cant help myself, I gotta put a flatland site in here somewhere. This one is from the UK, and those in the know are very aware how big flatland is in Europe. So as you would expect the content is quality AND quantity. Hell, I’m talking about King Of Concrete and Flatground. Videos are nice and large, but are hosted elsewhere and you’ll need to register to download them It’s no big deal though. Plenty of pictures to see, although yet again it’s another site that thinks thumbnail previews aren’t important. Try clicking a random link not knowing who it is or what they are doing only to find out it’s a picture of scenery. So points are lost there. Overall, I like it and I gotta go link them up on my site. I was a little surprised to see they had already linked me.
Now a quick outro. Here’s a few Australian sites that have been busy lately...

a month now.
It’s been a long time, 18 months sounds about right.
Can you see yourself returning home any time soon?
Where have you been?
Ha Ha, this is actually my last day in the states. I booked a ticket with the money I saved in Vancouver. It’s a return ticket for February, I don’t quite plan on stopping my travels yet, not this early into them.
I started off by flying to NYC then after a few days made my way over to Bethlehem Pennsylvania where I stayed with Dave King for about 8 weeks. I then made my way to camp Woodward, Cleveland, Louisville, Austin, Monterrey-Mexico, Tepic-Mexico, Vancouver- Canada, Seattle, Portland and now Philadelphia. I did visit many other cities but these are the cities I stayed in for long periods of time. How have you been able to fund a trip for this long? I definitely have a lot of good friends to thank for letting me stay with them over the past 18 months, Dave’s couches and basements have been put to good use. I got a Canadian work visa before I left, after 1 year of traveling the states and Mexico I was broke, so I took the flight from Austin to Vancouver 1 day before my work visa expired. I also did some odd under the table work in the states for some extra cash. I did dishes in Cleveland for 1 week for food and $100, painted Nate Wessel’s parents house, half a day of roofing in Bethlehem and Chase Hawk and I did some very, very strange work with some alcoholic builders in Austin... I’m still confused. Have you had any immigration issues? I flew to Toronto the first time and wasn’t quite clear of how to go about getting 90 more days in the states and due to the fact I was only in Toronto for 24 hours made it hard. I’ve learnt from that experience and haven’t had any problems since. I also learnt that crossing the Mexican border is much easier, they seem relieved to deal with someone that speaks English and doesn’t need a Visa to enter. Where are you at the moment? I’m in Philadelphia at Dave’s house where i’ve been for over
Tell us some crazy things you’ve witnessed in your travels. I’ll start with some Mexican stories. 1. When I was staying in Austin we decided to head down to Mexico for the night. One kid got his wallet stolen by a fancy dressed man, if you know what I mean. The police pulled their guns on us at least three time that night, you almost get used to it. Someone tried to break into the hotel room by smashing the window, leaving us unhappily paying for the damage after discussing running for the border. The trip was well worth it when we crossed the bridge back into the States and witnessed some border hoppers running under the bridge. 2. One time, after a big night of partying in Bethlehem this kid Salter and I were left stranded, on the walk home some guy pulled up and asked us if we would like to do some roofing, seemed like a good idea at the time. Salter found it a little harder then usual to get in the back of the ute due to his blood alcohol level. We only lasted half a day after almost falling off the roof numerous times but we made the taxi fare home. 3. Living in an attic in Austin with Dave King and Chase Hawk for three month is a book full of stories. That house was by far the rattiest house i’ve ever lived in. I think the most people living there at one point would be at least 30, people sleeping on the roof, on trampoline and in tents. The heavy flow of people in Austin over the winter makes for a great time. 4. One of the many times in NYC, Dave and I did karaoke on the foot path at 5am with Will Ferrell’s brother whilst sharing a bottle of whiskey with a bum. 5. I’ll finish with the Halloween party Dave had the other week, green bean wrestling in his basement, maybe the craziest or most sickening thing I’ve ever seen.

Big rings rule, aint nothing like a 43/16 for power//Nitai
tech questions death of the big ring? Dear 2020, First off great mag, it’s the best BMX one out there. I have a question for you about sprocket sizes. My bike came with a 44 tooth sprocket and I wanted to know why you see all the good riders out there with 28 tooth sprockets or smaller? Is this for speed or to save weight or is it just because it is cool? I am just starting to think properly about jumping and I thought they might help you pedal faster. Any help would be greatly appreciated, Keep up the great mag, Josh Hurstbridge, NSW Hey Josh, Thanks for the letter and glad you like the mag. Heres the low down in chainwheel sizes. Basically BMXers have used a 44 tooth chain wheel on the front and a 16 tooth freewheel on the back for the last 20 years or so. In the last 5 years a lot of companies have started making cassette hubs, which are lighter, stronger, and way better than the old screw on freewheels. Cassettes also allow you to run a much smaller cog on the rear, as low as 8 tooth now. This means that you can reduce the size of the front chain wheel without changing the gear ratio. So you can run a 9 on the rear and 25 on the front, 10-27, 11-30, 12-33 and so on, the actual gear ratio is the same, or very similar to 44-16, which seems to be the best ratio for BMX. So to answer your question the smaller chainwheel wont make it any easier or harder to pedal, unless to use the wrong rear cog, but it will make the whole set up lighter and stronger. The small chainwheel is stronger because the point where you hit it is closer to the centre, force times distance for all you engineering students, plus its all more out way and wont hit on coping or rails as easily as a larger set up. Small chainwheel’s are also pretty cool right now so you are right about the fashion part too. Only drawback with the whole thing is that a cassette hub will cost you more than the old screw on freewheel, better start saving. Mike Daly

the real deal wins the DK! G’day. I’m putting this together because I have something I want to share with all the other riders. Recently, a few things have happened and I guess in a way I have matured. A mate I knew, one of the biggest influences in my life, ‘left’. He was the guy who got me and kept me riding, and to this day I still remember the things we used to ride together. Watching him ride was one of the best memories I have in my life. One day at the park, he rolled up, without a word to anyone, pulled a (brakeless) 360 barspin to tailtap to crankflip to fakie. then did a fakie 360, then a 180 barspin out, rolled away and went home, without a word. Leaving us all stunned, it’s the best thing I have ever seen. Now he is gone and all I currently have is memories of our sessions, and I smile because it happened. I’m trying to say that every time you ride, ride to remember it! Smile more and ride, it helps. Take every session as though it could be your last. Because if you’re happy, you’re happy, and that is what is important. I look at everything in my life as something to enjoy. While I have your attention, Don’t fuck street spots, they arent yours! Dont fuck trails, dig and help out. Respect everyone, they’re are all part of life. Don’t steal bikes, it screws everything. And don’t take life too seriously, you wont get out alive. Ryan NSW
hooking crew up since... Hey 2020, I read your latest issue with the letter from Ben Harper. I broke my back, which took me out of the riding scene for a while, but all good now! I ride almost everyday at the Albany Creek bowl. Can you tell Ben to catch up with me there! Since reading this issue, I’ve thrown together a demo, with the help of a few mates and a loaned crappy camera. The good stuff’s at the end! I was hoping my riding is ok enough to feature in your mag! It would help me heaps to be able to get some form of sponsorship to ride my bike competitively overseas. Your mag is sik! backyard sessions Hey 2020, just wanted to write you guys and tell you about my mate Stu’s ramp, and a recent party we had there. A few years ago he purchased his
26 2020bmxmag.com.au
first house with the misses and the first improvement he made was a mini ramp. Its only about 4 foot high as we made it before we had ridden many ramps and had zero skills, so its kinda small and mellow, but still hell fun. It did its purpose of helping us progress to a level where we were confident to hit bigger ramps and bowls, and plenty of sessions still go down there with tunes cranking, the BBQ blazing, and beers flowing. We recently celebrated his 30th B’day there and sessioned the ramp all afternoon and night. Plenty of blokes we know who don’t even ride showed up, had a few brews (liquid courage!) and decided to hit the ramp up. They were so stoked they are keen for another session soon, and I’m sure this summer will provide them with plenty of opportunity. Its unreal that such a simple thing - a BMX, a ramp, good friends and some beers - can make so many people so stoked! Anyway, just wanted to say cheers to Stu for putting up the dollars etc. for the ramp and putting up with all us riff raff at his house so often. Oh better say thanks to his misses too. Thanks Amy! honour the code To 2020, this morning I was woken by a phone call. “Hello, Happy Birthday”, it was my Mum (gotta love ‘em). Not only was it my 26th birthday but I also had the day off work. With a perfect weather forecast and the whole day to myself, there was only one thing on my mind. Riding my bike. After a big breaky at Macca’s, then a ride along the beach front for a sniff of the wildlife, soon I had an itch for a full trail session. I called my mate who works an early shift and g’d him up to find these trails. We were told about these trails about 3 months ago by some local dude at this skate park. He said “If you can find em, you can ride em”, but he only pointed in the direction they were. We had been there 3 times looking for them already, but this time we had inside info. So ‘Moles’ (my mate) and I packed our shit and drove south to find and ride these trails that had eluded us for so long. Across two bull paddocks, over 4 barbed wire fences and though 2 knee-deep rivers, our hopes where dwindling rapidly. With no track to follow things were looking bleak but then as we sat down to contemplate another defeat we found a fresh track leading into the bush. After a short walk aimlessly though the dense scrub I though I could see what appeared to be carpet, bright green carpet. Bingo. Like a flash we smashed though the bush to the opening, 3 sets of doubles 4 ft high kickers with 10 to 15 ft gaps. Yes, finally my prayers had been answered. I had dreamt of this day,
we padded up and prepared to hit em. Needless to say the day went off with endless runs, just me and a mate amongst the trees, perfect trails and all on my birthday. Life rules. k@os PS I do not condone the riding of other crews trails if you weren’t invited, but I give total respect to the makers and the trail itself. Thankx dudes, you made my day.
roots I wanna say that the DK six pack your giving away to the best letter of the month is a sick bike and I dont mean sick as in you should shoot it and put it of it’s misery sick. One thing that really pisses me off in the free style BMX scene is kids who just do it to get sponsored, out of every 10 riders I meet I reckon that 4 of them are just riding to get sponsored, luckily the other 6 are just in for the riding and everything that goes with it. I’m a dirt and suburban street rider, probably the purest and original of BMX terrains. I got nothing against riders who ride vert, skate park or flatland just that they should ride some street and dirt to get a feeling for where BMX freestyle started. I’m currently out of riding since I snapped my tibia and fibia in rugby and need 6 months to recuperate. I was sorry to hear that Brendan Jones is out with a broken wrist and wish him a speedy recovery so he can get back there and progress even more. Same to any other riders out with injuries. Back 2 Basics 4 will be held at Downey park, Wilston Brisbane QLD on Thursday the 29th of December. There will be a flatland jam, bunny hop comp, free food an lots of prizes! The event will be getting filmed for fuel with a possible after party to be held at a club nearby. The jam kicks off at 3 and will go till dark. The G-Variable jam at Elizabeth Skatepark was a big success with around 50-60 people showing up to ride and hang out. Flatland was represented by Lee McCormick, Dave Sayer and Shane Badman riding in the “flatland” section of the park. A good day was had with the rain holding off until the very end. Check out more from the day further on in the mag. Shane Badman recently went on a 10 day tour through Central Australia
visiting various Aboriginal Communities doing demos and workshops with local Turn Up the Heat crew. Consisting of various martial artists, contortionists and street performers it was crazy! There is officially a lot of untapped potential living out in the Red Centre... Badman has also continued to get support with all things flatland. This time with long-time Flatland supporter Craig Walters courtesy of Team Mutt. The team is going strong, so watch out for big things in 2006... Mike Steingraber has returned to Australia for the rockin summer we all know and love. After a solid year of world wide travel, endless comp schedules and lifestyles of the rich and famous, Mike is all about some time and space to relax. That said, his first week back consisted of a Guinness Book of Records attempt. Mike braved a 7am start to go for the most backwards pinky squeaks in one minute, all no less, live for breaky TV. A couple of attempts saw Mike blaze into the record books with ease. Nice one! Mike also got busy building dirt jumps for Red Bull. Multi-tasking...

tropical and hot (consistently), stench of Street stalls, healthy food, random happenings, tuk tuks, very cheap, very way too many tranny’s and elephants copy, ng everythi y, sewerage, friendly people, crazy road behaviour, weird mentalit are some of the things that come to mind to describe the country.
Earlier this year in August Luke Fink and I made the trip to Thailand to take on the job of coaching Thai park and flat riders in preparation for Thailand’s biggest comp to date. This comp was open to all of Asia, but only if you registered through an Olympic government organisation which is apparently difficult to do. The incredible thing about this contest is that if a Thai rider gets gold, the government grants them 1 million baht, roughly 30 thousand Australian dollars. It is safe to say that this is one of the best jobs I’ve ever had, all expenses paid including hotels, flights and anything to do with the job. and on top of this we received a good wage each week. The average day went; wake up when we felt like it, roughly lunch time, 11 am to noon, go eat then chill. I would go riding with the flat crew at 2 pm till dark which was about 6-6.30 pm. Fink would usually ride with his guys from 4-8/8.30 pm. During this time we would give tips on how to do tricks and get to ride alot ourselves. All of the Thai riders are very cool and cruisy so it made the job easy and fun. When we were done riding for the day it was free time so we usually ate, checked internet and did whatever else we could be bothered doing in such heat. Next day do it all over. Some of the Thai riders are really good; there are great flatlanders, many up and coming and some of the ramp
riders are awesome; flairs, downside whips and double whips just to name a few. The hardest part of the job was when we had to pick the riders for the event, it meant that some of those riders who had their heart set on this opportunity were let down. They were friends so it wasn’t easy on any of us. Over all it was an amazing experience to live in Thailand for three and a half to four months, getting to do such things as travel the country, experience the nightlife, see how things are organised there, experience Thailand in the company of locals and just seeing what goes on in a third world country. I would recommend travelling to Thailand to anyone, it’s quite an experience. Simon O’Brien

When it comes to hella big budget events, Red Bull know how to pull out all the stops. Set right in the middle of Surfers main beach on the Gold Coast, Dirt Jam mixed pure BMX mayhem with the infamous ‘schoolies’ week in what was the biggest event of its kind ever seen in Australia. Over 60 tonnes of dirt sculpted over the top of 300 wooden palettes made up the two huge 3 metre high supercross-like kickers, while a 7 metre high roll in towered crazily above it all. The massive height of the tower set to generate more than enough speed for epic air, bringing with it the ability to push BMX dirt jumping into the next millennium. The 45 invited riders quickly dropped to around the 35 mark. Between the sheer scale of the roll in and two intimidating dirt kickers that followed, the field was culled even before the first heats began. Dunno what the deal was, but a lot of crew made a hell of a lot of noise to get entered in the event and then pussied out...
Connolly taking heavy hits while coming to grips with speed and airtime generated over the first set. Both suffering broken collarbones and both unceremoniously relegated to spectator status for the remainder of the weekend after their respective trips to the emergency ward. Under ever menacing and darkening storm clouds, the riders psyched and padded themselves up for the evening’s action. All on a mission to score one of only ten places available in the first round for Sunday nights, head to head elimination (can anyone say money?) final. With the intermittent rain becoming more frequent, the pace of the evening upped. Underneath the blazing nightclub like lighting rig the gathered crowd got stoked on the show unfolding before them. Dirt Jam’s Friday final was going off! While more than a few new faces proved their worth on the monstrous trails, it was the big guns of Corey Bohan, Ryan Guettler, Cameron White and Luke Parslow that really proved why they are dominating world wide on the BMX dirt circuit. Corey’s big, fluid trail style was laced with the likes of front flips and 1-footed 360 tabletops. More than enough flow to score him a 3rd place podium finish, but left many knowing that he had more in the tank for Sunday.
Practice was a brutal reality check for some. Josh Irvine and Damian

Cameron White threw down hard with big flips, double whips and even debuted front flips, his nights riding cementing a second place finish. Ryan Guettler, fresh from a year worldwide as ‘the most winningest rider’ in BMX history blew minds with runs full of huge variations that looked effortless. Front flips over the first set to 720’s over the second are just a taste of the whoop arse Ryan unleashed on the Dirt Jam set up. Ryan took the win, locked in his place as the numero uno favourite for Sunday and scored himself a tricked out Honda XR50 in the process. Unluckily, Luke Parslow went down hard on what may have been the biggest front flip ever seen in a comp, anywhere in the world. Luke over rotated on landing from almost 30 feet up straight to his face. Somehow a disgruntled and hella smashed up Parslow managed to walk away from the carnage, yet his injuries would see him out of action for the rest of the night and following weekend. The ever-increasing sprinkles of rain slowly turned into a torrential downpour and the best trick comp was abandoned in favour of keeping dry, the Dirt Jam crew moving in to cover the precious soil and ensure it would survive till the morning. Saturday saw the true face of Queensland shine upon Dirt Jam, with sun
blazing down on the golden beach, bikini clad bodies and massive dirt jumps (You didn’t see that last one coming right?). It was zero hour for those still keen to take on the best in Sunday’s finale. While some chose to sit it out thru dramas with pieces of bike or anatomy, those that climbed back up to the top of the monster roll in seemed so much more relaxed and in tune with the jumps. Maybe it was that the pressure was off somewhat, or maybe it was that they had had a night to reassess the mentality required to excel on the once in a lifetime set up. Whatever the case, the riding stepped up a few notches. Six riders proved to the judges and sun drenched crowd that they had the goods to ride the Sunday final. Young trail ruler Daniel Donges proceeded to boost his way into the Surfers stratosphere with style and energy almost unseen before locking down a place in the final alongside fellow Eastern ruler, Mik Bayzand. PJ Mackellar stepped his riding up with some serious streched airs and the newest member of the front flip club, Josh Stead got busy and made it through to the final. With the final qualification round out of the way, Dirt Jam pulled its wildcard with an impromptu best trick comp for one thousand dollars. One trick, one thousand bucks. Not bad for riding a bike. The only downfall to anyone’s ideas of easy

bucks was the level of competition. Off the hook would be the only way to describe it! The ten-minute jam allowed riders to fire off as many runs as they could manage, taking the pressure off landing everything first time around. This progressive format allowed riders to step into the unknown with tricks they may not usually unleash. The resulting session had the crowd on their feet and the level of riding pushing new ground, signifying a huge leap forward in the progression of Australian BMX. Cameron White took an early but decisive lead with the combo of barpsin to tailwhip (two tricks that stand tall in their own right) slammed into the one air, but with the level of talent on hand, it was short lived. Lee Kirkman and Shane Conlon stepped in with huge flip variations, no footed for Lee and flat spun for Shane. Not content with that, Shane cast a warning to those accumulated around the second jump that he could get a little off track which was somewhat of an understatement, his flip tailwhip attempt aborted mid way leaving photographers scattering! Frontflips became the new backflip with Corey Bohan, Ryan Guettler and Cam White firing them off with the ease of a regular jump. But it was Ryan Guettler who dominated the session with endless variations; 720 turndowns, 720 tyre
grabs, double whips and all round style for miles. When he threw a 360 double whip in the final minutes all knew he had clenched the bucks. Cam White stepped up with only seconds to go and came so close to pulling the same move, but his resultant speedway-esque slide didn’t cut it with the judges, leaving Ryan with the $1000 best trick cheque. But the day wasn’t over, Yonny Wakefield hell bent on pulling one of the newest moves in BMX off regardless of the judges, crew or MC’s trying to finish up for the day and get into party mode. Yonny’s bike flip attempts got everyone’s attention, including Ryan Guettlers, who put his winners cheque on the second set, cash incentive for Yonny to pull it clean. Even with the cash, roars from the riders and crowd willing him on, he slipped his pedals on the final attempt and missed out on the cash. Although a hazy memory has it that the cheque went on the bar with Yonny and the crew anyways...
Waking up to what looked like the most severe thunderstorm approaching wasn’t a good sign for the evening’s finale. The day slowly passed with torrential downpours and electrical storms frying the towering apartment
blocks with a ferocity reminiscent of a cyclone. Gusty winds looked like all but blowing the covers off the jumps, but just when the Dirt Jam crew were discussing shutting it all down, the sunset became nothing short of amazing. The clouds parting and the wind died off almost immediately. I’m not sure what deal Red Bull made with Mother Nature, but it worked! The rain soaked schoolies crowds made their way out from under cover as soon as the lights and music came online.

“To make the final you had to go head to head with 3 people. I was heads up with 2 Aussie riders and beat them. Then in the semi finals I was heads up with Ryan Guettler. I thought I was getting knocked out for sure. He won the first round; then next round he did a front flip to double tailwhip. I thought I was a goner, but then, somehow, I pulled the run of my life (so far). I did a tailwhip to X up on the first, then 360 tailwhip to barspin on the second jump, scoring a 9.8 out of 10, the judges were stoked. Then it came down to the third run with me and Guettler. He went first and went for a double whip, slipping a pedal and not making it through the second jump. All I had to do was a semi good run to make the final, so I did a no hander over the first to 360 no hander on the second. Then I was heads up with Cam White. He won the first round, and then I won the second, so it went to the third round again. I wanted to do the same run I did against Guettler but I didn’t get it. I did whip to X to whip on the second and scored a 7.3 out of 10, Cam could easily beat that! Cam did a flip on the first and truck to X on the second and scored a 6.7. I ended up taking it out! I didn’t think the format would be that good but it worked out for me and I took out the $5000 prize money. My first dirt jump comp win ever.”

They say the anticipation was intense after a long day assuming it would be a wash out was an understatement. Head to head riding was the name of the evening’s game. Riders paired off against each other, the first to score two wins advancing to the next round. The early rounds featured the big names and placegetters of the previous nights up against the relatively unknowns, but far from a walkover the riding was nothing short of intense. Amongst a bug plague stirred up by the storm, all eyes were focussed on the amazing set up and the battle raging between each pairing of riders. By round three, it was the powerhouse riding talents of Ryan Guettler, Corey Bohan, Dave Dillewaard and Cam White up against each other. With everything on the line, the riding stepped up another notch with moves unseen on these shores. Corey Bohan unleashed all his style and power but fell just short of Cam Whites consistency and flow which advanced him though. Think double tailwhip to front flip... What! Ryan’s front flip on the first to 720’s on the second set ruled, but it was Dave Dillewaards tailwhip to x-up followed by a signature 360 tailwhip to barspin that left the crowd in mass hysteria. Dave smiling even more than usual upon finding out that it was he advancing through to the final.

With both Cam White and Dave Dillewaard killing it in all the rounds leading up, it was hard to imagine what would unfold in the final. With one win each, it went to the wire and a final run, some calling that Cam threw his second run just to make the show even more out of control! Whatever the case, under the thunderstorm laden clouds Dave fired off his big guns in the final run in a finale that saw both riders land smooth, but not get the combo tricks they were after. Talk about a pressure cooker! With the winning run came the rain and the spoils. The tallest guy in BMX, Dave Dillewaard accepted his 5 grand winners cheque with hella pride. Then in a crazy rush, all present headed to the ensuing Red Bull after party for a night of mayhem and trash talk... Red Bull’s Dirt Jam was by far the most intense BMX competition of it’s kind ever seen in Australia, with riding that had to be seen to be believed. All who were part of it witnessed the future of Australian riding along with the reasons why the Australian 20inch contingent currently competing overseas are so dominant. So there I was pounding on the door at 4am in the morning to no answer. All of a sudden a big Irish guy sticks his head out of his room down the hall. “Hey! If you keep pounding, I’m going to pound you!”. Disappointed and frustrated I quietly walked back down the hall to the toilet. The same toilet where moments earlier I was relieving myself of the nights beer that I drank that evening with Randy Brown and Ray. I put the toilet lid down, had a seat and propped my feet against the door with an attempt to sleep until either Randy sobered up enough to answer the door or the lady at the front desk of the hostel we were staying at showed up to give me the key to our room. It was kind of cold and all that I was wearing were by boxers. I attempted to keep warm by laying toilet paper across my legs and feet. It actually helped or maybe I was still a bit drunk. Every once in a while I would leave my toilet sanctuary and go back to my room to knock softly to no answer or down to the reception to see if any on was there. I had no luck until 8:30 AM where I walked passed many fully dressed people looking at a disheveled bowlegged person in his boxers walking hopefully to the front desk. Holy crap there was some one there! I told here that I just locked myself out and she gave me the key whilst looking at me weird. I didn’t care; I was going to get into my room! I entered the room to Randy passed out and snoring in his comfortable bed. I put my clothes on, ran the extra key back

down stairs, ran back up to my bed and slept for one more hour until we had to wake and meet Matt Holmes to begin our journey to Canberra. Man the first day is going to be rough. Matt showed up, we loaded the bikes and headed out to meet Mike Daly and newest Eastern Bikes rider, Daniel (Donga) Donges. Our first stop were some trails in Bargo. They were downhill with steep landings. They looked fun. Daniel said he’s been there before and it showed because he was boosting to the moon. So were some of locals, Dean in particular. Another guy that stood out was Sketes who had them dialed and plenty of moves as well. It was a pretty chill session, then out of no where Tillsey busted out a perfect 720 over the last set. It surprised me so much I may have pooed a little in my shorts. It was time to say bye and make our way to the A.C.T. were there was a nice comfy apartment waiting for us to sleep in. The next morning we woke up early and started the skate park tour of Canberra. The first park was Weston. Big hips, big wind and a big rail that was going to get fuf’d. Donga made sure it got done along with an abubuca for good measure. Daniel Wallace showed up to ride but the wind was too much so we all decided to move on.

Flip fakie given the silent treatment at Ulladulla//Holmes
After a quick stop at Backbone BMX, which is a brand new kick ass BMX only shop we found ourselves at Wallace’s local park, Tuggeranong. This park had some cool hips and an old school feel to it. Wallace did some fakie tailwhips over the hip silky smooth. I found a gap over rail thing that the first time I did it I was super penciled out with my foot off. The second time was better. Time for the next park which happened to be Erindale, an old street spot turned park. Randy was going off over the mellow spine 360ing it smooth. Mike did a few ice picks to fakie on the tight brick quarters. That place had a cool feel to it. The last park of the day was Gungahlin. Donga and Randy were blasting the hip like jump with 360’s, lookbacks and tables. Randy took it hard a few times with some whip attempts but walked away for another day. It was time for a good nights sleep after we headed out to watch a local cover band, which happened to be Rob Smith’s girlfriends dads band. Good stuff. Tranny to stump by Donga//Holmes

In the morning we loaded the vans back up and head back to Sydney hitting the coastal towns for more riding. The first park was Batemans Bay that had some strange little nuggets in it. Not too much happened except Randy stacking hard after clipping his wheel on the coping. Straight to the face and cutting his lip the session was over. We got him some frozen peas for the swelling and kept on trucking to Durras. Its so close to the ocean and there really wasn’t too much to do except watch Daniel fufanu the big tree stump. Right before we left he crank flip fufed it. Damn that kid is good. The last park of the day and the trip was Ulladulla. Man that’s just fun to say, Ulladulla, Ulladulla. This park looked old and fun. We saw a dog skating the park. That’s right a dog. The owner skates and brought an extra board for the dog who kicks it along and even goes up the trannys. Donga and Randy were cruising around the park and I got to flip fakie the big quarter. Now it was time to head back to Sydney. We stayed at Matt’s house and the next day went to Dulwich Hill for a Halloween jam (see elsewhere...). That was a perfect way to end the trip. All in all it was a damn good time. I mean I was in Australia! Even spending the night in a toilet locked out of your room is fun just as long as you’re in Australia, right? Next time I’m keeping the key with me. Bundaberg on. RIDE THE
On the last day of July, Cooper Brownlee, Alan Briotti, Luke Edwards and myself boarded our plane to Tokyo the first of 14 flights on our trip. Sitting on the plane, I knew this was going to be a trip I would remember for the rest of my life. All the spots you see in the magazine and videos, were all about to become a reality. Our first stop was in Tokyo, where we stayed for a few days as a stopover to London. Tokyo is a really weird place with heaps of neon signs and vending machines everywhere. Got into London after a very long flight and booked into our hostel, where we all slept for over 15 hours catching up on jet lag. The next day, our riding trip started; with spots like Brixton Skate Park and south bank sessioned. Met an absolute legend called Billy, who showed us some mad spots and made us laugh. Very good rider as well, with unique style and flow, he owned Brixton Skate Park. All the spots we went to were met with such anticipation. I remember trying to find Romford Skate Park, looking around everywhere to try and find the exact location of it. (We weren’t the most organized bunch on the planet) We finally found it and I was in awe of the place, massive Park with old snake runs and deep bowls. A very unique place that has to be seen to be believed. The park is over 25 years old, and still flows like it was made yesterday. Harrow Park, which is on the other side of London is very similar, so if you ever go to London, go to these spots or you’ve missed out. From London, we headed to Düsseldorf, Germany. The girl at flight centre couldn’t believe we were going to the other side of the world to ride a university, pretty damn crazy when you think about it I guess. Düsseldorf Uni is undoubtedly one of the most famous Bmx spots on the planet and for good reason as well, the place is off the hook!!! Trannies everywhere, even the gutters had rideable transition plus good ledges and lines everywhere. Unfortunately the main tranny wall there was closed off due to renovations, but we still had more than enough to ride. The security was very lax at the uni as well, with no one really giving a shit. A security guard actually told us to enjoy ourselves and to have a good ride. How good! Made our way down through Cologne and Frankfurt and missioned on to Barcelona. An absolute Mecca for street, everywhere we looked there was something to ride. Perfect ledges, rideable sculptures and banks everywhere plus the weather was great and so were the ladies. We hooked up with a dude called Fernando, who was a tour guide for the Fit Bike Co, so he had his spots down. He spoke no English, and described spots by using his bike, describing tricks that have gone down in videos, it was pretty funny. We rode late into the night most days, with a highlight of Barcelona defiantly being the laid back attitude and multiple street spots around every corner. Headed off to Rome, which was just a tourist stop. Everyone still had fun, with nice food and good architecture. Went to the Vatican City and did a tour of some art galleries to see a bit of history about the place. Cooper paid $7 AUS for a bottle of Fanta, which is the biggest mark up I have ever seen, Cooper loves his Fanta!

When an opportunity arises to let you go on a trip that would take you to every famous riding spot around the world, you have to take it. From Dusseldorf University in Germany one week, to the Brooklyn Banks in New York the next, I look back on what was achieved on such a whirlwind trip around the world.
54 2020bmxmag.com.au
Headed into New York to a much different lifestyle, with way more people and a much more hectic vibe. NYC didn’t disappoint, with good spots such as the Brooklyn Banks and mad street downtown. Stayed up and did a 24 hour street ride through the night, which was a treat. Coop slid some good rails and did some good lines. Anything that you have seen on the animal video is really big time, there is no small tricks in that video, after being to majority of the spots. The place was so busy, that we decided to head down to Philadelphia and ride FDR Skate Park, the east coasts version of Burnside. It was sick, with endless lines and no one there till midday everyday. We slept in a car that we hired, which made for interesting nights, as Grizzle hadn’t showered or done washing for a few days. The price you pay I guess to ride quality spots! A local at FDR told us of some trails outside of Philly, so we got in the car and missioned to them. Our first taste of real Pennsylvanian trails, with downhill rhythms that were big and had heaps of flow. Dave King from FBM rolled up and was a super cool guy. He showed us what trail riding was all about. MASSIVE transfers that I thought weren’t doable, and mad style. He invited us back to his place for beers and a place to stay, which was far better than the car we had all been sleeping in. Rode the trails again, which we came to know as “Dave’s Trails” and watched Allan kill the big set, with huge flattys and trademark style. After a few hook ups, we were invited by Magilla to ride Posh trails, upstate about an hour, in Bethlehem PA. The jumps were like something I had never seen before in my life. I have been building trails for a good 8 years, and never has any of my work come close to this place. Over 120 jumps, all flowing and packed in hard. Magilla killed the trails, along with a local called Marty, who was doing inverts over this huge hip, a pleasure to watch. Allan and I hit up the easier sets, as we feared for our safety hitting up 30-foot sets of rhythm. Such a dream come true to go there, I couldn’t believe it!! Jay Lonegran showed up and showed everyone what was up, with trail style unmatched by anyone else.

All the locals were killing it, and it made for a fun day of riding and watching trail riders shredding the best jumps in the world. Headed back to New York after saying our goodbyes in Philly and chilled in NYC for a few days more. Rode the Brooklyn Banks heaps, which was a local spot for riders to hook up. Some guy calling himself BLACK MAN was doing wall ride 360’s and big 540 bunny hops with ease, he was a character. He got along with Grizzel really well, which was good to see. After a short flight and disassembling our bikes once again, we headed to Austin, which was met with huge expectation by all the crew. Austin was hot, really hot. We rode 9th street trails, which were super easy to find in about 40 degree heat, but didn’t care, as it was a surreal feeling actually being there. Taj rolls up for about 10 minutes, shreds, and then leaves. It was pretty crazy! Mainly rode 9th street everyday, hitting up all the lines the place had to offer. The trails weren’t in the best condition, but they still flowed really well. Hung out at Empire BMX and drank slurpees and watched DVD’s when it got too hot. Those guys were super friendly, and liked our business, as we all bought up fairly big, especially Griz. Coop had a hook up to ride the Terrible One ramp, so we missioned out there and had the door answered by none other than Joe rich, who was a super cool guy and was really funny. He put on a demo on the ramp. Going so high and doing massive alley oop airs and shit, sitting so close to an alleyoop turndown was the highlight of Austin for me, it was crazy.

From Austin we headed to Los Angeles for a few days to chill, before making our way to New Zealand. Los Angeles is cool, we chilled in Hollywood and saw a movie and went to Venice beach. New Zealand was the last spot on the trip, our 13th flight in 8 weeks. We hired a big van and toured around the north island as far down as Taupo, to ride the cool parks they had there. NZ has a very chilled out vibe, which was a good way to end a great trip. Had so much fun at this down hill luge track, which made for some fierce battles on the slopes, with coop almost being injured after I full on cut him off going about 50km/h. Its always a good time guaranteed when you hang out with mates, but travelling around the world with your friends is something that every rider should do once in there life. I have come to learn much about these people and other riding spots around the world. One happy Bmxer. Andrei Sablinskis

The days leading up to the jam were a tad bit worrisome. With rain threatening proceedings, it was hit or miss if it would go down or not. But luck shone down on us, even if the sun wouldn’t. So under a pale grey sky, the Adelaide BMX riders arose. This jam had the exact feeling of what I perceive as a “jam”. No PA system, no promises and music supplied by someone’s car stereo. This isn’t a competition, it’s a fucking jam.

JAM
The HalloweenJam slithered its way to Dulwich Hill skate park on the 29th of October. the day went off with no problems. Hang on yes it did, I think that’s what made it such an interesting and great crazy day.
There were many sleepless nights before the jam on both emancipate and strawberry slaughterhouse turf. The jam and its audience saw a lot of good riding on all different disciplines of ‘skate park’ riding. We had our tech wizards, such as Seaton Spratt who canadian nose picked the top of the wall ride and also double whipped the quarter to bank transfer thingy which was awesome to see. we also saw the likes of gee destroying his sub boxes shirtless, mona style fo shizzle! I also saw some crazy mexican kid that goes by the name of Serge foot jam the sub and continued to flow the rest of the park like some crazy pirate. Speaking of flow, Turbo, JC, Luke, B-rad, Toby Forte and Benn Piggott were flowing the park like some sort of concrete nam spot! I saw some crazy dressed people, such as pirates, a jedi knight, frankenstein, the ghost of the golly wog and I heard nicole kidman made a couple of short appreances in her bmx bandit gear, but i missed her every time. All in all a great day. I just want to thank firstly jimmy, lobby, reggie and abbs for putting on the jam with myself and putting in a heap of hard work. (It’s weird how all the emancipate guys have nicknames.. i think they think they are some sort of action figure super heroes! Damn kids...) big thanks goes to my parents for looking after the stands and bringing a lot of equipment out. Terry and Neil at Cycolgy for helping us out with prizes as well as Chris Harrison and Mike Lewis from 666, also big thanks to Adam Ware from unitedwestand for supplying us with shitluck and vclub stuff. Jamie Sparks thanks a bunch for getting us the stereo equipment. big thank-you to Alex ‘weeman’ for bringing out the generators even though they could not be used, and everyone else that showed up injured or not to just enjoy the day which was full of spills and thrils. It was great to see everyone out there and I thank everyone from the bottom of my heart. emo! On a serious note I just like to give a holla out to the Tahmoor guys, if we had know earlier that our two jams were going to fall on the same day we would have re-scheduled just out of respect for dave also hope you guys had a good jam. kevin keefs neil resides queensland Tell us about your self kev Well I’m Kevin Keefs Neil and I’m 28 years young, grew up on Russell Island and I was born in a milo tin. Tragically I lost my parents to a fish filleting accident 1984, then moved off the island to Beenleigh, living in government housing. These days i’ve come along way from being a nobody, to a tricking legend of the BMX world. When did you realise you were good? When I saw how crap every one else is. Then again i knew that i was the best even when it was only me riding on Russell Island Who do you look up to on a bike? Well no one really, I’m usually the one being looked up to, especially when i’m blasting 30ft airs. Well there is some one i hold a lot of respect for... me, Kevin Keefs Neil thats who, and any one trying to be like me. No one ever comes close but I get psyched from the effort my fans put in. Where do you see your self in ten years? You name it I’m there TV, billboards, magazines, milk cartons, pensioner tickets, bus timetables, Mt Cotton, at your mums house, with a metal detector on a beach, car pooling, watching Matlock reruns, playing double guitars, extracting fresh water from saltwater, you name it I’ll be all over that shit. What else is there other than bmx in your life? Shazza me misses and the kids, especially the deformed one , dont have a name for it as yet but we’ll give it one once it learns to stop shitting inside. In my spare time i go to the dump to collect old mattresses to chop up and use in foam pits. I like to visit the artistic side of BMX where i get to express my creativity, So i usually draw stick men pictures of myself and the awesome stunts that i can remember blasting that day. Some people want more detail in my renditions but there’s just not enough time and paper in the day to draw that many tricks. I also like posing for cameras and glamour photography. Thank you’s? A massive shout out to my sponsors, Yellow Cabs, Russle Island Ferry, Bi Lo , Alexander Downer, Radio Rentals, Crab juice, XXXX bitter, anyone who’s ever cheered for me at a skatepark, my trophy polisher (Greg i’d be lost without you) my spare bike, my spare bike stand and any kid rocking a mustache out there. 2020bmxmag be turning 20 The next 2020bmxmag is the 20th issue and like any crazy rider, we’re going to party it up. Meaning next issue we’ll have to get up to something special... OK, so maybe there’s only 2 copies of the collectors edition issue 3 in existence. But regardless, 2020bmxmag still makes the monumentous milestone of 20 issues out there. It’s kinda special to me, so we’ve got some plans to make it special*. While many said we wouldn’t survive (some even saying we wouldn’t survive without racing? Rest assured, 2020bmxmag ain’t dilluting the real riding experience!), we said a big ‘fuck you’ to all the doubters and closed minded hicks. We represent the Australian scene, plain and simple. You all make it happen through riding, contributing, working in the industry or just getting stoked when you see a 20inch cruise by. 2020bmxmag exists thanks to the riders of Australia, and for that I say thanks to you all. Ride on... Holmes
