ABOUT DESIGN
2014Master of Industrial and Commercial Design National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, Taipei 2010-2014 Bachelor of Industrial and Commercial Design National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, Taipei
Breath and design I remember a teacher once talk that: There usually are two reactions when people meet a good design: One is breathtaking, the other is feeling the breath of design and breath together. First one seems very charming, but maybe after time it would out of mind. The second one is that sometimes people would forget it, but once they feel it exist, it would so nature as it should be. The more you see and touch, the more you like. The latter kind of design is what I am seeking for. I hope what design bring to people is not distance, but warm and touched heart.
ABOUT CARE Skills
Rhinoceros Keyshot ProE Cinema 4D
I love pure aesthetics and the joy design bring to us. But when every time a issue occurred, such as social and environment, I will start to think: What can I do as a designer? Therefore, I try to see design in a wider view. What design absorbed and influenced? Why this design should be here? This kinds of questions is what I would ask when doing projects. I hope though this self-check process, can provide better designs and experiences to people, meanwhile is friendly to people and the world. I have wide interests in design, such as product, graphic, digital, to exhibition. I think even they have different out come. The core value is the same: Care about people. For me, I am interest in Cradle to Cradle design, Social Innovation with design and how to express culture in design.

“S
ound Monster” is a new type of toy that designs for recognizing sound. It is designed specifically to address the needs of children with developmental delay though it appeals to children of all ages. In respect of mental and physical development, developmental delay children have more difficulties than normal ones. Besides, public are unfamiliar and have stereotype to appliance for special kids. We redefine recognition training toy for special kids, which featuring a modern design aesthetic and educational meaning. The primary function is to identify concepts of sound, by turning concepts of sound into tangible objects. Moreover, it includes sensory issues and fine motor skills. “Sound Monster” accompanies children as they grow up.

Background research According to the UN World Health Organization (WHO) reported, the incidence of child developmental delays(DD) was 6~8%, which means that there is a child may have a developmental delays within every 12 children . These children’s development of mental and physical more slowly than ordinary children. They can enter the early intervention and education institutions, where provide early intervention and education programs for preschool aged 3 to 6, to help them link the general school curriculum. Through education and training, children with DD are possible to approach or as the general level , even if their ability to be limited, it would be help to make progress and to maintain a certain standard.
Researching: education environment and target audience. Finding Features and Problems 10
Education environment My design partner and I observant and interact in a early intervention and education institution, where at New Taipei city, Taiwan, for about one year. We found the education model has following features: 1. Picture cards and the sound devices which can record voices and play are in common use as teaching aids. 2. The tasks for kids most be simplification. 3. Add games and stories to encourage learning. 4. Add multi-stimulations:visual, aural and Tactile as feedbacks. 5. Most of leaning rely on teachers.
What about sound We found that when a teachers tell kids to “voice down”, rare of them would understand the meaning and actually practice, this kind of abstract concept is hard to both teach and learn. Although there are many books or toys that are teaching specific sounds, such as dogs barking or phone’s ring, children with DD still hard to understand relative concept, louder or faster for instance, and rare toys are focus on these basic sound concept recognition. Theses findings make us curious whether there would be possible to make it easier learning concepts like this with a set of toys.
6. The abstract concept is hard to both teach and learn.

“Training physical”
“Unique, but not special.”
In aspect of Cognitive, it is easier to learn new concepts with concepts that already known. We decide to use the concepts of substance to represent the concepts of sounds.
In aspect of physical, it hope to develop hand training basic motor skills, through playing toys to stimulate the hand muscles, and then be able to apply these actions to self-care skills.
Many design of aids for special group is too special and make users to feel different with others and feel inferior. We want to make a Unique design, but do not want to highlight the special nature of the groups. With the ability of child with DD as a starting point, if they can use the product, than other children must also can. Who also in the hope it can break the so-called “general” and “special” barriers.

The optical conducting technology is a system that can conduct the path and direction of light by changing the angle of medium. The process with three parts: collection, conduction, and emission. In this project we use The Light Brick technology, which patented by The Graduate Institute of Color and Illumination Technology, can collect and conduct light at the same time. The surface of Light Brick can increase the amount of light of collection and the structure inside can conduct them toward one direction. There are wide potential applicabilities.
Key value With this patented technology, the imagination of light will change from “create” light for a dark room, to “conduct” light that already exist toward the needed places. There is no consumption of energy conversion issues in this process of conduction and don’t rely on any extra energy to create light. Beside, the brightness of light will relate to where it came from, that is, if the original light source is powerful, where Light Brick conducts to would be bright; if the original source is dim, there would only have a faint glow.

The Idea of
"Secondhand Light" The typical idea of light that we use to have is: “the room is dark? just buy a lamp! “ From the age of candle flame to modern electric light, people are use to “create” light. However, there are a lots of light resources have been around in the living surroundings, such as inexhaustible sunlight and over-supplying city light. What if these already exist and bottomless resources can be controlled and reused in our life? Therefore, we raise the idea of “Secondhand Light”, applying excess light into new usage.
Design principles With the optical conducting technology and the idea of “Secondhand Light”, we hope to design a product, which can apply in general house. Instead of a complicate system utilizes in whole buildings, it is a low-cost home light that can be easy accessed by everyone. The lights conducting from the excess light inside or outside the house, can make local lighting use and adjust the position of both input and output by users.

The type is a strip consisted of small Light Bricks units, which can collecting can conducting light, and the fibre-optical, which increase the efficient of conducting light. The tape
surface can collect and conduct simultaneously, the light gather in the lamp and come out with the reflecting of illuminated mirror. Meanwhile, to extend the usability, there is solar accumulator which storage energy with the gathering light, when the light resource is not stable, the lamp still can be use with the LED and a storage battery.

Idea Developing The idea start from the relationship between people and objects. Every one have some objects that they love or feel it represent their personalities. The objects people used is also a expression of users themselves. Therefore, we would like to come out with a product that can be define by the different users and create interesting interact with them. We conclude with three main key words: Personalize, Interesting, Life. Personalize is for user to express themselves, interesting is for the interaction between people and product, and life is for a common product in our daily life. We decide to design a interacting lamp with the digital technology and the ideas of people and objects.

Background research Next to the Long Shan Temple in Wanhua, Taipei, there is a small alley with a length of less than 50 meters. This alley is full of door to door herbal shops. Each store is full with sacks of dried herbs, or filled with baskets of fresh green Herbs. The piled-up medical herbs contain 300 to 400 different kinds of spices. This alley is known as the “Herb Alley About one to two hundred years ago, rickshaws were used to carry herbs and gathered around the Long Shan temple. when people felt ill or painful, they most likely relied on the word-of-mouth herbal recipes or went to the temple to ask for medical swab, pick up then boil the herbs based on the swab they received. Until 1981, the government medicine unit banned the swab from the temples; the lively market gradually faded.

Through redesign the herb products and expanding of herb knowledge, the industrial of herb-selling area in Wanhua, Taipei and other cities could continue and increase . Attracting people with creative products, making the "herb experience" become one part of life, increasing the knowledge and interesting in Taiwanese herb culture.
Why don't people use herbs? Original way to drink herbs at home is complicate. First, following a right recipe and buying the ingredients. Then, boil the herbs with several steps. For the modern people with fast pace lifestyle, they rather chose the herb tea in coffee shop which from western world.

ISSUES Nowadays everything goes faster and faster, such as urban apartment or condominium, a lot of people live together but don’t know each other. They might don’t have time, or no reason to interact with each other. The “community” used to refer to people connect together with lands, but now people prefer to meet the “community” in a virtual world than the next door neighbors. This phenomena create some benefits but also problems. What can we do to re-create the value of the “local community”?

We all like to living in a better environment, but it is hard to come true with one person. I found that a good value in traditional community is helping and cooperating with each others. With the same goal to achieve, the sense of belong to local would be aroused, than it will be easier to open a real interaction with others.

WHO CARES TOMRROW? 2013 Taiwan Tech Design Week Who Cares Tomorrow Taiwan Tech Design Week(TTDW) is an annual design exhibition held by Taiwan Tech’s student. The exhibition used to display the works of students finished in design courses. This year, however, we start to think that what more can we do with design? Design is not just exist in the courses, but the real world. Also, there are something we can do only when we are students. Therefore we set a position of TTDW not only a student works exhibition but a chance to do something you really care about. It include a theme exhibition with 7 selected projects, a students’ works exhibition, several lectures take by Taiwan designers, a night party. I engaged in the preparation of the event and was the leader of exhibition design group.
