Dear my fellow seniors, Our high school days have officially come to an end and our futures are very bright ahead of us. This year, we have grown and learned together as peers, friends, and leaders. We have laughed together, cried together, and most importantly worked hard together. So, congratulations! We are ready for whatever the future holds. In this 2017 Senior Edition of the 21st Century Leaders publication, Let Youth Voices Be Heard, we want to recognize all of the outstanding accomplishments of our seniors as well as reminisce on their time at 21st Century Leaders. As for the younger 21st Century Leaders, continue being active in your leadership education whether it be in your community or at a 21st Century Leaders summer institute or school-year summits. Remember, the possibilities are endless! On behalf of 21st Century Leaders and the Youth Leadership Council, we hope you enjoy this issue and have a great summer. Lead Your FUTURE A LETTER FROM 21CL EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR CONGRATULATI ONS CLASS OF 2017 To our young leaders, Well, the day you have been working so hard for all of these years is finally here. You?re graduating from high school and, even more importantly, taking the next step on your journey toward the goals each of you have set for yourselves. For most of you that means college. For others, military or other service. For others, a jumpstart into the world of work with more education to come later. And for all of you an exciting time of challenge and opportunity no matter where you find yourself in the coming years. All of us at 21st Century Leaders have been honored to witness your growth as leaders. The Board of Directors, staff, and volunteers are proud of the commitment and dedication your graduation represents. We are proud of YOU! Your personal accomplishments are considerable, but what I am most impressed by is how you are already making a measurable difference beyond your high schools. Whether it?s by the service you have given to make the world a better place, the encouraging words you have offered
to friends and team members, or the enthusiasm you contribute to the task at hand, you have become role models not just for your peers but for all of us. As we?ve discussed many times, leadership isn?t really about the leader but about others. It?s about helping them get better and become leaders themselves so that our schools, communities and places of work can get better, too. In the seminal book, ?The Leadership Challenge,? James Kouzes and Barry Posner describe ?Modeling the Way? as one of the five practices of leadership. ?Modeling the Way? is more than just being a good and decent person; it is living and acting out the behaviors you want to see in others-being an ?intentional? role model, or, as many put it, ?walking the talk.? You have always ?walked the talk?; that?s what led you to 21st Century Leaders to begin with. Now you?re encouraging and helping others to do the same. Our world will be better because of it. And as you do that, you?re actually fulfilling the mission that 21st Century Leaders has had at its core
for 25 years- developing leaders for the future. I hope you?ll keep in touch as alumni. In the coming years there will be hundreds, indeed thousands of young people eager to learn from you as you progress through your career, and life. Just like you, they will be ready to take up the leadership challenge and will be seeking out inspiration, encouragement and support. And as 21st Century Leaders I know you?ll be ready to help nurture the leadership talent of those who will follow in your footsteps. On behalf of our entire organization, good luck. And thank you.
Sincerely,
Bob Watson, Executive Director

My involvement in 21st Century Leaders has been instrumental in providing me interview and networking experiences. I joined 21CL in the summer of 2015, attended the summer leadership institute, SYLI@Goizueta, attended the school-year summits, joined the Youth Leadership Council during my junior year, and even helped planned the 2016 fall summit, Leadership exCHANGE will my fellow 21CL peer,
Alvin Winston! 21CL has provided me with the skills, network, and opportunities to grow into a more professional and accomplished person. From simple things like participating in conference calls to the more complex like planning the fall Leadership exCHANGE summit, 21CL has prepared me for what I am doing today. 21CL also exposed me to the importance of having a internship even while still in high school.
In fact, obtaining an internship is the hot topic and scramble for every student whether it is a summer or a semester internship. During the interview and application process, like most things, one spends their time concentrating on just getting the position, and very little on what one will do after the position is obtained. Now in my 11th month of 3 back to back internships I finally feel like I can speak to ?How to be an Intern?.
"21CL HAS PROVIDED ME WITH THE SKILLS, NETWORK, AND OPPORTUNITIES TO GROW INTO A MORE PROFESSIONAL AND ACCOMPLISHED PERSON." The past few months have energy portfolio and is well on filled themselves will many its way to being a key player on eye opening experiences the global stage. and amazing opportunities. Top Mistakes to Avoid -
Don?t accidentally call 911 on the company phone, it doesn?t end well. Anecdote: It was a hectic day in the office with everyone literally running back and forth. I was at the front desk and charged, along with another project, to dial in a conference call. I was in a hurry to dial in the call on time and didn?t pay attention to the number or the dial out number. Our dial out number is conveniently 91, and you can guess what happened from there. The phones blew up minutes later, all calling to make sure everything was okay. It was a confusing stressful scenario, but it was not the end of the world. That will forever be at the top of my ?dumbest intern moments list?. The great thing about the situation was everyone just took it in stride. It did not feel like my dumbest moment. So just take things as they come and don?t get caught up in the little stresses because 30 minutes later you will be onto the next project and won?t have time to dwell on past mistakes.

Don?t assumes you don?t have work just because it?s a federal holiday Ancedote: Three weeks into the internship and it was a Monday morning. My fellow intern tried to get into our office building but the doors were locked. So she just assumed she didn?t have work because no one working on Capitol Hill (and all of the federal employees in the city) had to go to work. Around 9:20 I texted her asking where she was. She was outside enjoying a coffee sitting in front of the White House. She was so embarrassed when she realized we still had work. Simple mistakes happen to everyone and we now laugh about that little misunderstanding.
-
Don?t be ?that Intern? Quick one-liner tips for this area: Ambition is important and has its place, but your role is to learn and be helpful. It?s okay to be dumb just don?t be too dumb. If you can google it, don?t ask. Most importantly be the best you can for the team. Lastly just don?t be shady.
The Learning Curve -
Yes, the phones are terrifying especially when the CEO calls. Tip: How to answer phones is the most common thing you will have to learn at any internship, and can be the most intimidating. Just take a deep breath and remember you can always put the caller on hold and get someone to help you transfer the call. Practice makes perfect!
-
Communicate your interests! Tip: You are at the internship to learn, so make sure the office is aware of what really simulates you. Don?t be afraid to talk to your coordinator. They are there for you and can help you navigate the alignment between your interests and the organization?s interests. There is always a way to incorporate you passion into projects the office needs. You never know, expressing your interest might get you more involved than you ever expected!
-
Flexibility (Things never fail to surprise). Tip: One of the biggest impressions my current internship has left on me is how to work efficiently under time constraints and slightly stressful situations. You never know what the day is going to hold so the best thing to do is show up every day prepared for anything.
Rewards -
Clarity for future career choices Advice: The clarity provided by actually getting to spend time in the work force is irreplaceable. Whether you learn through an internship that your current engagement is something you never want to do again or you find an unrealized passion for an industry. Internships are instrumental! When applying, I never thought that my current internship would play into my interest with such accuracy. I get to spend every day completing projects that revolve around my interest for my future career path.
-
Skill sets Advice: After every internship, I have walked away with an increased skill set and knowledge base, helping to prepare myself better for future opportunities. This aspect is also something I am intentional about; I make sure to communicate the things I enjoy learning about and doing to my facilitators. This helps enrich the experience for you as an intern but it also helps your office because when you are passionate about a project you are simulated to think of new ideas that can be beneficial to the office.
-
Lifelong friendships Advice: Make sure you get to know the other interns and permanent employees in the office. Much like going being in 21st Century Leaders with a set group of divers people every day is a bonding experience. You and the other interns experience the same fun projects and the same terrible ones. They are allies to help you get everything done in crunch time and to go grab lunch with you to get out of the office on a pretty day. The permanent employees are great people, all with unique experiences and backgrounds. They are all full of solid advice. These are the people that not only can help you find future opportunities, but people who are willing to invest time in your future, take advantage of it!
These are just the takeaways from my recent experiences. Every internship will present itself with a different experience. I know all three of my internships have been drastically different and have built upon each other to further my knowledge. In the fall, I will be attending Georgia Tech with the intended major of Global Economics and Modern Languages.
