REPORT
21CL Annual Report 2019
LETTER FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR —
2
019 marked an incredible year of impact further strengthening the legacy of 21st Century Leaders. With 30 years of serving Georgia’s youth, it’s inspiring to see how far we’ve come as an organization. We’ve connected with and transformed more than 14,000 high school students during that time! While our programs have adapted and expanded over the years, our mission to develop and inspire the next generation of diverse leaders has remained the same. In our milestone year, we celebrated the past while focusing on the future. We asked ourselves the hard question: How can we support equity in our state by reaching even more students? As you read through your 2019 annual report, you’ll see a number of data points that show just how impactful our work has been. The diversity of our students and programs continue to reflect the communities we serve. We bring students together from all parts of Georgia who carry with them different backgrounds and perspectives that make our programs truly unique. Our students are increasingly developing the leadership skills needed for success, discovering more career fields than ever before, and connecting with diverse peers and professionals that they may never have met otherwise. In 2019, we rebranded and restructured our nearly 20 year-old school-based programs from Youth Leadership Centers to 21CLubs. In doing so, we nearly doubled our 21Clubs across the state, including a new partnership with the City of Savannah. We built out 38 new modules, focused on Social & Emotional Intelligence, in our online learning platform, Leadership Connect. For the first time, we established two new leadership teams to help guide and strengthen our organization into the future, and specifically invest in our alumni engagement; Our Advisory Council includes former board members and long-time donors while our Junior Board of Directors is solely comprised of 21st Century Leaders alumni.
“
We continued to pilot our Summer Immersion Internship program which secured another $13,000 in post-secondary scholarships for our students.
As we enter our 4th decade of service, our goal is to close the opportunity gap by continuing to provide high-quality, high impact programs to students in Georgia regardless of the barrier they face. We also have a goal of serving students in over 50% of the counties in the state. Our engaged leadership and passionate staff continue to work hard to keep our programs at little to no cost while reaching as many students as we can. This year, the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic has dictated unprecedented changes and adaptations to our live programming, including the launch of our fourth summer institute focused on the Healthcare and Healthcare IT industry. While many things are uncertain in our world right now, 21CL remains committed to providing Georgia high school students with access to transformational leadership education and training. In fact, we will continue to focus on and build out our online learning platform, Leadership Connect now and expand our 21CLub model in the school year, utilizing technology and local resources. As we continue to connect, transform and inspire high school students across Georgia we welcome you to take on an active role in 21st Century Leaders whether it’s attending our special events, volunteering, or making a donation; your support matters. Together, we can continue to inspire youth to lead. Thank you,

Leadership exCHANGE is one of 21CL’s live leadership training experiences held in the Fall. Leadership exCHANGE focuses on the exchanging of ideas, thoughts, and career opportunities on a range of topics and themes. The 2018 Fall Leadership exCHANGE was sponsored by MarketSource, an expert in sales and innovation. 21CL students gained an exclusive look at the MarketSource Experience Center, where client demonstrations were held, and to hear directly from Mike Christensen, Executive Vice President of MarketSource. 77 students from 50 high schools discovered career opportunities and tracks within sales, networked with diverse professionals, practiced skills in strategic communication, creative thinking and teamwork.

21CLubs Formerly known as Youth Leadership Centers, 21st Century Leaders Clubs (or 21CLubs) are school-based programs designed to build leadership and career pathway skills for students housed in participating Georgia high schools. Each 21CLub serves 20-25 students who are supported through the efforts of an advising teacher or faculty member. Plus, through our online learning platform Leadership Connect and our live school-year summits, students are developing the competencies they need to be competitive in college and career.

Leadership Connect Leadership Connect is 21CL’s online learning platform helping us address the challenges of scale and scope (learning continuity), as well as accessibility for students often left out of high-level programming because of the lack of transportation or financial resources. This innovative platform is focused on our 7 core leadership competencies and currently provides 78 online modules. It combines real-world experiential learning opportunities through self-paced in-person and online training.

BRANDI HARRISON
Director of Production at WarnerMedia Studios 21CL Junior Board of Directors, Chair Brenau University (2001) H.V. Jenkins High School - Savannah, GA (1997)
I know for a fact that I can draw a direct line between the two summers I spent with 21st Century Leaders in 1995 and 1996 and who I am today. In that intimate environment during the Summer Leadership Institutes, I learned to work with a wide and diverse group of students from all over Georgia. It shattered any stereotypes that I had of “city people” or “country people”. That lesson helps me manage my current staff of 150 today. I worked on real business projects and presented solutions to professionals which required me to ask thought provoking questions and understand a company’s pain points. These are skills that I use every day to find efficiencies in how we manage our production studios and resources at WarnerMedia. During 21st Century Leaders I was required to lead – not asked, not just suggested. There was an expectation that I would build teams, mentor others, and be a strong teammate to other leaders. Going back to Savannah, I understood business and careers more clearly than any of my classmates. I became more confident in both choosing a major in college and interviewing for internships. I’ve also used that talent to secure every job I’ve ever earned. I’ve continued to rely on all of the skills that I learned as I stepped into the new role of Chair for the inaugural 21st Century Leaders Junior Board of Directors. Together, along with the other alumni on the Junior Board, we have a goal to reach out and galvanize our 14,000 alumni… reconnecting them to the program and its mission in a significant way. In fact, we launched a monthly giving program, called 21CL Giving Circle, to inspire not just alumni, but all those individually connected to 21st Century Leaders to give back and inspire our future generations. All of those skills and expectations were originally ignited 30 years ago and fueled by the passion of all those involved with the organization.
