Our Mission 21st Century Leaders is a collaboration of business and professional leaders inspiring high school students to take on leadership positions, seek out opportunities, and give back to their communities by connecting them with a diverse group of enthusiastic peers, passionate professionals and powerful ideas, transforming their skills, attitudes, and abilities through training and hands-on experiences.

Joseph Minani addressing his peers at Turner Voices Youth Media Institute in summer 2016

“21st Century Leaders is the key that unlocks the door that leads you to place where you can look at your future differently and confidently. - Joseph Minani, Fugees Academy, Class of 2017

Our Leadership Message Dear 21st Century Leader Supporter, It’s amazing to think that 25 years ago we launched our first leadership program. Back in 1991 that first program, then known as the Summer Business Academy, engaged and impacted 31 students from 8 high schools, dozens of business and professional volunteers and several Georgia corporations to launch what would become, several years later, what we now know as 21st Century Leaders. It’s no surprise that the building blocks of that first program have remained constant. Students still undergo a rigorous application process and are selected on the basis of merit rather than the ability to pay an expensive program fee. Business leaders and professionals put their expertise, and that of their companies, to work on behalf of a motivated and inspired group of high school youth. Hands-on workshops in leadership and professional development. Networking. Multiple opportunities to speak in public (a first for many students). An emphasis on working together to solve problems. A respect for diversity and all that means for students now and especially for our future. Developing a vision for yourself but, more importantly as leaders, inspiring others

3

to develop it for themselves. It was all there in 1991 and remains firmly imbedded in our organizational values and practices 25 years later. As you look through our 2016 Annual Report we continue to be honored by the support our organization continues to receive, enabling us to serve over 12,000 students since that first program in 1991. But I hope you’ll pay particular attention to our newest initiative: Leadership Connect. Combining a highly engaging and interactive group of over 100 online leadership lessons with webinars and the live experiences we have traditionally delivered, this new initiative promises to help us scale our efforts to reach even more students from every corner of the state in the coming years. It has been in the pilot phase for the past two years; next year’s annual report will detail our first full roll-out of this program. Let’s allow ourselves to dream a little. With Leadership Connect, built to be scaled, how many more amazing young leaders can we impact in the next 25 years? Stay tuned! Sincerely,

Robert Watson Executive Director

Who Creates Impact

21st Century Leaders’ strength and distinction lie in the engagement of business leaders and professionals as volunteers, the retooling of high-level corporate leadership training programs for our program delivery model, and an unyielding commitment to the power of diversity. Our volunteers lead by example, by giving back to the communinty and inspiring the next generation of leaders.

503 Volunteers 59 Days Served 59 volunteer training and hands-on opportunities were provided in 2015-2016 for our corporate and private sector volunteers including: • 18 days of summer leadership institutes • 17 days of school-year training events/summits • 15 days of summer application readings • 5 days of conducting in-person student interviews • 4 days of meetings for Board of Directors

“21CL represents an opportunity to reinvest in the next generation of leaders some of what others invested in me. I helped develop and lead one of the 21CL programs and came away impressed by the enthusiasm and caliber of the students. I continue to be excited about its mission, the quality of its programs and students, and the commitment of the leadership team.” - Matt Johnson, Partner, KPMG

Double Double the the Impact Impact They may look nearly identical, but twin sisters Natalie and Natasha Walker show us that every leader is distinct, and that shared experience has personal impact. The two 21st Century Leaders’ Alumnae are giving back and moving forward, with networking, volunteer service and mentorship. Natalie and Natasha joined 21st Century Leaders while in high school before graduating from Marietta High School in 2012 and then Auburn University in 2016. Today, both young women are leading their future and their careers with two of 21st Century Leaders’ corporate partners.

MEET NATASHA “21CL taught me that leaders aren’t born, they are made. You may be a great leader already, but there is always an opportunity for growth. As a student at Auburn University, I chose to not only excel academically, but also to be a part of change on my campus. I served as Administrative Vice President for the Black Student Union, as a Resident Assistant, an Ambassador for the Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs, an Orientation Leader for International Students and more. If it wasn’t for the strong foundation and practice with 21CL in high school, I wouldn’t have been allotted as many opportunities or as prepared to interview for those positions.” - Natasha Walker Natasha Walker participated in two summer leadership institutes in high school, as well as the Youth Leadership Center at Marrietta High School.. She attended EarthCare at Berry College in 2009 and the Summer Leadership Institute at Georgia Southern University in 2010. She also attended 21CL events throughout the year, such as the Goizueta Youth Leadership Summit,, Fall Rally Day and the Fall Leadership Summit. In 2016, Natasha joined the 21CL Summer Leadership Team as a returning alumna and shared her experience and talents with the current students. Natasha also regularly volunteers with 21st Century Leaders and Marietta YELLS. From there she went on to start her career and work with Turner.

MEET NATALIE “21CL taught me invaluable skills such as work-life balance and networking. Working with and connecting with so many professionals and peers really boosted my confidence and exposed me to different leadership principles, my personal strengths and weaknesses and exposed me to a diverse group of peers that forged in me a more global and forward thinking mindset. I used those skills to lead groups of students at Auburn University.” - Natalie Walker Natalie Walker participated in the Youth Leadership Center at Marietta High School and attended the summer leadership institute at Georgia Southern University in 2009 and 2010, and EarthCare with Georgia Power in 2011. After graduating from Auburn in 2016, Natalie earned a summer internship with Cox Enterprises, which led to a full-time position as a Strategic Sourcing Analyst at Cox Enterprises. Natalie is also a regular volunteer with 21st Century Leaders.

“My experience with 21st Century Leaders put me on the path to opening up to people, and since then, I have become an officer in my local TSA chapter, my first leadership position at school. - Hensel Smith, A. R. Johnson Health Science and Engineering Magnet School, Class of 2018

“The most important leadership lesson that I have learned as a member of 21CL is that sometimes you have to step out of your comfort zone to become an effective leader. Before I joined 21CL, I was afraid of public speaking. However, I was encouraged by other 21st Century Leaders to go and try to do some introductions during the summer institute, and it was an excellent feeling to know that the fear was becoming more and more minuscule every time I introduced myself or someone else. - Caitlin Jones, Westlake High School, Class of 2018
