A Year in Review
t ransforming ourselves through the programs we offer so that we can deliver even greater impact to even more students. As you look through our 2017 Annual Report you will see that we have now fully launched Leadership Connect: the online learning platform of 21st Century Leaders. Combining a highly engaging and interactive group of over 100 online leadership lessons with webinars and the live experiences we have traditionally delivered, this new initiative promises to help us scale our efforts to reach even more students from every corner of the state in the coming years.
Executive Director, Bob Watson speaking to student, Tony Nguyen at a school year summit.
Dear 21st Century Leaders Supporter, We are now in our 26th year of delivering high quality and high impact leadership programs for high school youth. I?m not sure anyone back in 1991 envisioned the scale and scope of what we have accomplished ever since that first program for 31 students so many years ago. Our very first leadership program was then known as the Summer Business Academy and after 4 years of a successful pilot program for an increasing number of youth we embarked on a full-fledged strategic plan. Long story short- we decided to go ?all in? and became a full-time youth leadership development organization. We rebranded as 21st Century Leaders in 1996 and have been developing our future leaders ever since. Connect. Inspire. Transform. These three words summarize what we do for as many as 1,000 students each year. But they also summarize how we view ourselves as an organization. Connecting business leaders and other professionals with the future. Inspiring volunteers to reach out and give back to the next generation. So it is significant that as we begin our second quarter century of service to the state of Georgia and its young people that we are again
You will also see that in 2017 we launched our first internship programs and will expand the number of those opportunities in the coming year. Our vision is to transform this into a full and robust program in future years through the generosity and vision of our partners. And finally, if you look at our financial statement you will note that in 2017 we created an endowment fund enabling us to begin to reach a level of sustainability that we never could have imagined when it all began back in the 20th century. The expressed purpose for this fund is to finance scholarships for future 21st Century Leaders students. As we learned in 1991, a little seed money and a lot of vision can transform people, and organizations, into creators of significant impact. We continue to be honored by all of the support our organization continues to receive from our donors, volunteers, and partners. Together we have impacted the lives of over 13,000 students since that very first leadership program. And as 21st Century Leaders continues to build on its success and transform itself for a second quarter century of service don?t be surprised when sometime in the not too distant future we announce that we have grown from impacting that first 31 students to over 31,000 students. Stay tuned! Sincerely,

Transforming Leaders What was a memorable or "aha" moment in 21CL? The biggest "aha" moment I had in connecting the dots with 21CL is how I forged true friends, some of which I STILL keep in touch with personally and professionally. The degrees of separation in the business world and throughout the state are very small. The world of business and industry intersect on many levels How did 21CL prepare you for your next steps? After participating in the program, I later interned with 21CL in the summers during college and served as the assistant director of the summer institutes during that time, as well. 21CL has had an unquantifiable impact on my professional life. During my internship I learned how to present to corporate boards, worked on fundraising and development and it allowed me to "cut my teeth" as a formal leader and as a mentor. Prior to my internship with 21CL my exposure from the program gave me the opportunity to intern with Georgia Power.
What is something that you recently learned about leadership?
Meet James Nixon, a 21CL Alumni who attended the program in the late 1990's. He's a graduate of Tift County High School and Mercer University. James now leads his own community as the Vice President, Administrative & Clinical Services at Tift Regional Health System.
How did participating in 21CL change you or lead you to where you are now? 21st Century Leaders was the foundation to my formal business and leadership training. These skills followed me through my internships, college work and even to the work I do today. I still use principles learned from team building modules from courses and keep up with life long friends who I met through 21CL.
Of course we never stop learning. I was at a training last month; one workshop focused on leadership. In our era of dependence on electronic communication as a default method, the message was, "an email has never built a relationship but has destroyed them countless times." Never use email as a substitute for communication that is better held face to face or by phone.
Do you have a reflection or anecdote about a time you put a skill or piece of information you learned through 21st Century Leaders to work as a professional? Yes. I still use lessons I've learned from the FISH program personally and professionally . I learned the phrase "even if we disagree, dont make me wrong". This means that there's always different perspectives, more than one right answer or means to get something accomplished.
