It was the first day of the program so no one really knew anyone yet. Once it was your turn you had to say your name with an alliterative adjective. Our Delta leaders were Alfonso and Taylor. It was funny seeing the adjectives my friends came up with. It became apparent though that my friend Jay hadn't been paying attention. When it was Jay's turn, he started going around the circle and said "Athletic Alfredo" instead of Alfonso. The room erupted in laughter. He had taken butchering names to a new extreme. In shock, Alfonso went to the blackboard and spelled his name out. 21CL Impact: 21CL overall has made me a more well-rounded individual. I've had other leadership experiences, but EarthCare stood out to me. Firstly, EarthCare made me get outside of my comfort zone. At first I was not looking forward to the ropes course or rock climbing. I knew it would be hot, and I could get frustrated easily. But I opted for a more optimistic outlook and ended up having a lot of fun. Secondly, I strengthened my soft skills. Initially all the networking made me a little uncomfortable. However, as the sessions passed I became more and more confident. I was ready to sell my image. Lastly, EarthCare is responsible for many of my friendships. I value my friends for support, but also for knowledge. 21CL typically attracts diversity in the leadership institutes, so I met a lot of people with different strengths. Servant leadership is both a leadership philosophy and set of leadership practices. Traditional leadership generally involves the accumulation and exercise of power by one at the “top of the pyramid.” By comparison, the servant-leader shares power, puts the needs of others first and helps people develop and perform as highly as possible. 21CL has laid the foundation for me to become a servant-leader. Favorite Quote: "Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard" --Tim Notke Future Plans: I plan to attend Georgia College and State University and earn my Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN), Masters of Science in Nursing (MSN), and possibly my Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP). I hope to work as a Family Nurse Practitioner and to, one day, open my own assisted living home. Favorite 21CL Memory: My favorite memory with 21CL has to be the 2017 EarthCare Talent Show! I didn't have any talent planned and neither did any of my friends. We figured we would just sit back and watch the other talented campers do their thing! As the night went on though, we realized we didn't really need a special talent to participate. Our friends who were participating were just having a good time showcasing whatever they felt like! My friends and I got to thinking: we had been singing "That's What I Like" by Bruno Mars the entire week. We knew it was well rehearsed and, for obvious reasons, would be an awesome performance. The final performer left the stage and we knew it was our time. We rushed the stage, hooked up the music, and pretty much threw down. Around half way through the song, we realized our fellow campers were joining us onstage--singing and dancing right along with us! It wasn't long before everyone was onstage getting down to Bruno! I felt so much love and happiness there with everyone which is completely what 21CL is all about! 21CL Impact: 21st Century Leaders has had a huge--if not the biggest--impact on my life. Through 21st Century Leaders, I learned the kind of stuff that students and parents complain is “not being taught” in schools anymore. Things like networking, creating an elevator speech, public speaking, and teamwork are taught in organizations like this one. The resources to prepare for the real world are in your high school, you just have to apply yourself and seek them out. I am extremely thankful to 21st Century Leaders for helping me learn how to utilize those resources and my own abilities. Accomplishments: Selected as one of 21CL's Georgia Youth Leadership Award winners in 2019.

ANTHONY MAYS II ROCKDALE COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL | ROCKDALE COUNTY Favorite Quote: "At some point, everything's gonna go south on you and you're going to say, this is it. This is how I end. Now you can either accept that, or you can get to work. That's all it is. You just begin. You do the math. You solve one problem and you solve the next one, and then the next. And If you solve enough problems, you get to come home." from the movie, The Martian, character, Mark Watney Future Plans: Attend Stanford University and earn a dual undergraduate degree in economics and management science engineering, a joint J.D. and MBA degree in business finance, and a Ph.D. in financial engineering. As a financial engineer, I will use my expertise for social entrepreneurship, helping to stimulate and spearhead social change in impoverished communities. I will promote and support economic equality by creating new and improved technical and quantitative models and processes that can be replicated and scalable in any organization or community. These models will not only focus on inclusive growth and development but will also help governments, communities, and businesses address income inequality and the wealth gap. Ultimately, I will lead creative business and financial innovation, stimulating and spearheading social change and helping foster and build communities that work for all people, especially underrepresented and marginalized groups. Favorite 21CL Memory: My favorite 21CL memory was the winter holiday service project and the ugly sweater holiday celebration. It was nice to just unwind with friends after a long and busy semester of school work and service work. Everyone was really relaxed and carefree. We talked about spring exam preparations and possible college choices. Most of all, the celebration provided me a great opportunity to get to know members in a more personable way 21CL Impact: Serving on the 21st Century Leadership Council was one of the most rewarding experiences in civic and social responsibility that I have had, it helped me to better define myself as a servant leader, and it helped me appreciate that serving others requires you to be dependable, collaborative, humble, and purpose-driven. The opportunities 21CL afforded me also affirmed my decision to pursue degrees and a career in business finance, financial engineering, and social entrepreneurship. Interestingly enough, during my college admission interviews with Stanford, MIT, Harvard, and UPenn Wharton, the interviewers asked me a lot of questions about 21CL and were really impressed with my 21CL involvement, especially being able to influence over 600 students to engage in our community through outreach and recruitment, social media campaigns, and meaningful service projects. I know that my 21CL experience helped me to gain acceptance to my schools of choice. Thank you 21CL! Accomplishments: University Scholarships = $310,880; • University of Georgia Presidential Leadership Scholarship; • University of Georgia Charter Scholarship

CLASS OF 2019 MERCY OGUTU DRUID HILLS HIGH SCHOOL | DEKALB COUNTY Favorite Quote: “We rise, by lifting others.” Future Plans: Attend Trinity Washington University and major in Political Science, International Affairs and Minor in Public Policy. My plan for the future is to make an impact locally and globally. I plan to work with the United Nations and plan to fix many immigration policies and provide more equal access opportunities to under-served communities. Being an immigrant from Kenya, I have seen the policies have more limitations than benefits. I plan to work hard in Washington DC with the United Nations and go back to Kenya one day and make history being the 1st Woman United Nations Ambassador of Kenya. I plan to keep being engaged in my community and hopefully one day to start a non profit to help more Minorities, especially girls be engaged and educated. Favorite 21CL Memory: My favorite memory was at SYLI in 2018 when we met the Atlanta 40 under 40. Many of the guest speakers switched their careers many times and were still successful. I liked how many said it’s not where your start and it’s how you end and your career should make you happy and not just be about how much your making. Meeting everyone inspired to take on any challenge that will come my way and keep working hard to reach my goal. Listening to the guest speak motivated me to further my career goals and choose a career that doesn’t feel like a job, but more like a passion that makes me feel happy. 21CL Impact: 21CL impacted me my senior year to be persistent in working hard inside and outside the classroom. Coming from SYLI, motivated me to make a change in my school. I was motivated to work hard not only for myself, but also for my fellow peers. I leaned to take every loss encountered as a gain to new opportunities. I worked hard in my school to be a voice for international student and also students with disabilities. I was elected Student Government Association President and made history being the first Kenyan School president in my schools 100th year. Being a student with a speech impediment, I have demonstrated that a disability should not stop you from achieving and teaching your true potential. 21CL taught me the improvement of teamwork and showed me the true meaning of success of lifting others as we climb. I have learned to network more professionally, learned that true leadership is making others around you their own leaders. 21CL has motivated me to work above and beyond expectations to reach my goals. Accomplishments: National Association of Black Accountants $1,000 scholarship for Accounting Career Awareness Program; Alumni of National Academy of Future Scientists and Technologists, Society of Torch and Laurel Scholars members, Trinity Washington University Leadership Scholarship $375,000, 1st Kenyan Student Government Association Druid Hills High School President, Wingate University Presidential Award $38,000, Associates of Science in Network System Administration from DeVry University and Deans List Fall 2018.

Favorite Quote: "The good life is a process, not a state of being. It is a direction not a destination." -Carl Rojers Future Plans: Attend Georgia Institute of Technology and major in Neuroscience. AND ...There is direction, but there is no destination. Favorite 21CL Memory: Earth Care 2017-This memory is my favorite not because it was fun or enjoyable, but because these events led to so much growth. I remember getting to the EarthCare program and being very overwhelmed and anxious as we just had to stand up and introduce ourselves, but I quickly was taught that if I wanted to be a leader and make an impact, I would have to push myself dint know how difficult it would be. The first day, I remember the staff talking to our group and encouraging us to get out of our comfort zones and take advantage of this week, but in fear, I sat back and saw no point in pushing myself so I didn't sign up for any introductions or public speaking events that week. Later that day we learned and wrote our elevator speeches, I wasn't ready to actually give my speech to anybody, but then the next day the program exposed me to a meet and greet. Exposure to fears is actually very effective in growth, but in the process, the amount of stress can feel unbearable. As I walked into the ballroom I felt unprepared and extremely anxious. But I remembered the encouraging word the staff gave my group in preparing us and decided that I was going to face my fear of strangers and let myself be seen. 21CL gave me this opportunity to make the decision to face my fears. This memory has left a large impact on me as it was the start of the week and I was extremely encouraged afterward and was able to grow as a person and a leader. I became more comfortable talking to people and letting myself been seen because of that exposure to being thrown into a room with a large group of official looking business people staring back. 21CL Impact: The 21CL EarthCare summer institute was my first to the intensity of the professional world. Before 21CL I had some leadership experience but in my current environment, there weren't many effective leaders that I could learn from. 21CL changed my view of leadership and the business world. I was able to see how I could use my voice for change and good by taking a leadership role, and 21CL gave me skills and knowledge of how I can make an impact. Through teaching practical leadership formalities as well as exposures to and advice from leaders, 21CL was able to equip me to take on the outside world. Through the EarthCare institute, I was able to meet other aspiring leaders from all across Georgia who had similar aspirations to be influential in their environment as well as learn. 21CL prepared me to go on into my school and community and make a difference and further my education of leadership and learn to develop my own leadership style.
