Georgia Youth Leadership Awards (GYLA) is 21st Century Leader?s signature fundraising event in which 20 students who have demonstrated outstanding leadership abilities are honored. High School students are nominated from all across Georgia, and those who truly exemplify the meaning of leadership are then selected by a committee of business professionals and high school peers to be honored at the GYLA event. Students can be nominated for a variety of areas of accomplishment, including community service, entrepreneurship, environmental sustainability, and general leadership. The Georgia Youth Leadership Awards is held during the National Youth Leadership Month of February as a culmination of 21st Century Leaders' ?Let Youth Voices Be Heard? campaign. Each student that is honored at the GYLA event for his or her efforts is a tribute to the morals for which 21st Century Leader?s hopes to instill among the youth of today: passionate, forward thinking, leverage diversity, resourceful, and service oriented. 21st Century Leaders recognizes that each of these qualities is as important as the next when performing in a role of leadership. Partnering with Atlanta Business Chronicle's 40 under 40 members, and numerous corporate sponsors like Turner Broadcasting, these young leaders are selected and honored for their outstanding leadership achievements.

A LOOK BACK AT FORMER GYLA WINNER, EVAN BARNARD Last year's GYLA event was held on Thursday, February 26, 2015 at the Omni Hotel at CNN Center where 21st Century Leaders?own Evan Barnard was awarded for his outstanding efforts in refurbishing several Braille Nature Trails across Georgia. When interviewed about the event and his leadership abilities, Evan articulately described for us his thoughts on his work and on being the recipient of such a gratifying award:

Q: Being an honoree for GYLA, how do you maintain your leadership image for which you were awarded? A: I maintain my leadership by continuing to serve in leadership positions both in school and as an active volunteer in my community. I am continuing my work with the visually impaired, serve as the president or co-president of three clubs at my school, and still regularly volunteer as a docent at the Chattahoochee Nature Center and for other nature organizations. I continue to serve as a national youth ambassador for Mentor Foundation USA, and am mentoring new ambassadors for National Child Awareness Month. I also encourage my peers to get involved and help them prepare for

Q:Why did you choose to work with the Braille Nature Trails and what impacts have you made through your efforts? A: I volunteered to work on a Braille nature trail that had been vandalized, and ended up working with the Georgia Council of the Blind. I organized a nature walk for them, and realized how difficult it is for the visually impaired to access the outdoors. I decided to build more trails and advocate for increased outdoor access for people with disabilities. I completed a new Braille trail with the help of youth volunteers and community volunteers and members of the Georgia Council of the Blind. Being a part of designing the trail was a great experience for everyone involved. Many of the students volunteered with the trail for several years, Georgia Council of the Blind members have stayed involved, and many people have learned about nature by using the trail. I have also raised awareness both locally and nationally about the importance of providing these opportunities to those with disabilities, and more trails are being implemented in Georgia and other states.

Throughout the course of history, civilizations have been molded and crafted by reigning bodies and the leaders of these governments have shaped history itself. Governments have always existed to maintain order and balance in society, and the tenants of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are the ideals that our American government was founded on. In his Gettysburg Address, Abraham Lincoln once said that ?government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth?, and we?ve been able to see how the American democratic system has been able to withstand the test of time. Unfortunately for Lincoln, today?s America is plagued with a myriad of politically divisive issues that were probably relatively unforeseen during his time. These issues, such as immigration, health care reform, terrorism, and domestic strife, have all proved to be pivotal points that differ based on the political parties and candidates. With the 2016 Presidential Election coming up in a few months, 21st Century Leaders has decided to give you a quick rundown of the major party candidates and their stance on the major issues. Democrats: Founded in 1828, the Democratic

BERNI E Another candidate is Bernie Sanders. Sanders is a lifetime pro-choice advocate, and supports PP funding. He believes that all new wealth goes to top 1% and that this is the cause of economic inequality. He supports combating institutional racism and reform in the justice system, as well as same-sex marriage and equal pay. He believes that police officers shouldn?t be shooting unarmed people e and that marijuana should be taken off the controlled substance list. He supports taxation of Wall Street and making public universities free. He believes that climate change partly causes rise of terrorist groups and opposes Keystone. He?s an advocate of animal welfare and humane treatment, and doesn?t support unilateral action against terrorism.

CRUZ One of the main Republican Candidates for this

TRUM P Another Republican candidate is Donald Trump. Trump supports the defunding of Planned Parenthood, mortgage interest deduction, he?s been disinvited form RedState gatherings for misogynistic comments, but believes that political correctness is not his problem. He believes a 0% corporate tax would create millions of jobs, and that the police are the most mistreated people in America. He supports the legalization of drugs and believes that we should use the revenue to fund drug education. He supports abolishing the DOE, Common Core, and the EPA, and that climate change is a hoax. He believes that gun violence is inevitable, we need a border wall in Mexico, and that Muslim refugees should be kept out of America.
