Family fun comes first at Redner’s Markets Family Expo It’s not often that an event truly has “something for everyone,” but with food, products and entertainment for all ages, the 7th annual Redner’s Markets Family Expo is unquestionably one of those events. Families throughout Berks County, the Lehigh Valley and southeastern Pennsylvania are already making plans to attend the 2013 Redner’s Markets Family Expo Nov. 2 and 3 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days at the Greater Reading Expo Center, 2525 N. 12th St., Reading. “The Redner’s Markets Family Expo gets bigger
every year,” said Denice Schaeffer, general manager for Berks-Mont Newspapers. “Last year’s event drew more than 10,000 visitors, and we are looking to exceed that number for 2013. “We’re very excited for this year’s Expo. More than 100 sponsors and exhibitors have already signed up to be there, showcasing products and services for babies, toddlers, tweens, teens and adults. There will be lots of entertainment, costumed characters, prizes and an inflatable Play Park for the little ones (and to give Mom and Dad a chance to
take a break).” Exhibitors will offer information and products dealing with childcare, education, health, toys, family entertainment, food, clothing, insurance & financial, novelties and more. And of course, the centerpiece is the Redner’s Markets Pavilion, where visitors can sample the best in food and beverages from their favorite brands. Poured Concrete Wall Foundation Cracks ... What Are My Options? Basement Waterproofing Specialist explains the remedy to foundation cracks in a poured concrete wall Most people are principally unaware of such services until they need them. Research is paramount; however, the volume of information can be overwhelming. The simple, short and introductory step is discerning what is best for you. First, if you have a poured concrete wall what products are companies proposing to use? For example, in a plain poured concrete wall with an extremely visible crack contractors will apply a boiler plate response by filling it in with an epoxy (essentially a kind of glue). Further, in some cases they will actually glue an expensive strap/strip made of carbon fiber onto it. The carbon fiber is a thin stranded filament 8 inches wide 1/8 inch thick glued to the block or cement wall perpendicular to the crack. Will it stop the water for some time? Sure, but with expansion and contraction of temperature changes the crack
has a tendency to separate and it will tear the coatings. At the same time from a structural point of view that will absolutely not address the structural repair. The carbon fiber strap probably won’t rip. However, the adhesive applied to it WILL and strip off the wall leaving you with a wall that separates. One of the big concerns with a poured concrete wall crack is that it might stay dormant for years and or continue down into the ‘footer’ (the footer is the frame work of what holds the concrete wall in place). Most of the time that’s not happening but there is a possibility it is. So how could a company guarantee for the lifetime of the structure that wall will not move? By keeping it simple. A 90,000 lbs tensile strength 304 stainless steel plate. Basement Waterproofing Specialists even fired a .454 Casull round at one from 5 yards away and it did
not penetrate the plate. The crack is epoxied first, then the plated is epoxied to the outside of the wall (digging required) and then 6” bolts are applied. Most importantly this prevents the foundation from separating and prevents the footer from potentially cracking. We will even dig down further at no extra cost and underpin the footer just as an added precaution. Of course there are times when we cannot perform this procedure on the outside because there might be patio’s or decks. In these cases we would apply the plate from the inside. With this tensile strength that wall isn’t going anywhere. This is the proper way to fix a poured concrete wall. It’s what our own family members would get and nothing less. Stephanie Grace set to perform Sunday A vibrant force on the scene, Stephanie Grace is ready to stake her claim in country music with electrifying vocals, genuinely sweet songs, and an exuberantly fresh personality that is mixed with a dose of attitude, charisma and charm. This 16-year-old is making her dreams come true with determination and vision and not letting anything stand in her way. Set to perform at 2:30 p.m., Sunday at the Redner’s Family Expo, she will storm the venue with her brand of unique country music. With her roots laid down in Douglassville, PA, Stephanie has always been around country music.
“Country was literally all I listened to,” remembers this teenage girl. “My parents listened to country radio nonstop and my mom used to play Lorrie Morgan in the car when we were driving to school.” The passion for singing continued throughout her childhood. “I always loved to sing,” recalls Stephanie. “When I was two, I danced around the house singing Old McDonald into an egg beater over and over. Even when we sat in a circle singing songs in kindergarten, I was always the loudest, even though I was a very shy kid.” One would never imagine that stage fright once bothered this now sharp
performer as she graced the stage with notable acts already including Taylor Swift, Easton Corbin, Gloriana, Josh Turner, John Michael Montgomery, Scotty McCreery, and Bucky Covington. This shyness went away after her first grade talent show performance of What Dreams Are Made Of (from the Lizzie McGuire movie). “When I told my mom I wanted to sing in this talent show, she couldn’t believe it. I surprised the entire school when I got up there to sing. I loved the adrenaline rush I felt on stage and that’s when I knew I wanted to do this for the rest of my life.” She continued playing

and dreams of inspiring others through lyrics that frame her daily experiences and casual conversations. Songwriting was something that didn’t come naturally at first, but only a few years after her first attempt; you can’t get her to stop writing. “As an 8 year old, I was a little frustrated because I really didn’t have much to write about. Two years later, school was getting rough and my grandmother passed away. she credits her continued success to her loving family and supportive group of friends. “It’s all a girl can ask for. I’ve been very blessed. Her ultimate dream is to perform at the Grand Ole Opry and complete a world tour. “While I can’t be sure what the future holds, I know that as long as I’m singing country music, I’ll be living my dream!”

Sheriff’s Department I.D. Me program returns to expo I.D. Me is a child identification program that enhances the Code Amber Alert System. The Berks County Sheriff’s department captures a digital photo of your child and stores it on the County of Berks computer network. If your child would become the victim of abduction, the digital photo along with the child’s demographics would be sent to the Pennsylvania State Police for submission to the Code Am-
ber Alert organization, provided that the Activation Criteria would apply. If the criteria are met, the Amber Alert system would then be activated. I.D. Me is a free community service provided by the Berks County Sheriff’s Department. Sheriff Eric J. Weaknecht has been a member of the Berks County Sheriff’s Department since 1984. He is committed to protecting our children through
programs like Deputy Phil which teaches home, school and neighborhood safety; Deputy-Youth Mentoring programs engaging in sports coaching and the ID Me Program. ID Me is a child identification card program that was created by Sheriff Weaknecht. So far the program has provided over 10,000 child identification cards since its inception in 2003.

Animal Rescue League brings furry friends The Animal Rescue League of Berks County will be one of the many exhibitors at this year’s Redner’s Family Expo. The history of the Animal Rescue dates back to July 7, 1952, when Mary Archer, a Berks County socialite and lifelong activist for animal welfare, founded the Animal Rescue League because of her concern for the humane treatment of animals in Berks County. Miss Archer was the first president of the Berks County League of Women Voters, the first female member of the National Committee of the Democratic Party, and the first female member

of the Berks County Prison Board. She was born into a prominent Reading family and never married. She used much of her family’s wealth to help others. Animals always played a vital role in Miss Archer’s life, especially during her many years with the Berks County Humane Society. As a result of continuous struggles over management policies, she left the Humane Society and started the Animal Rescue League on 10-acres of her Flying Hills farm near what would become the junction of Routes 724 and the Morgantown Expressway. Shareholders were found and a board of di-
rectors was established. The league was operated through memberships and donations. Adoptions were arranged on a hometo-home basis from an office in Reading until the kennels were opened in Cumru Township in 1953. Sixteen dogs and four cats were the first animals to be sheltered in the new kennels. Miss Archer donated $15,000 to build the new ARL quarters which included an entrance hall, two office areas, 32 kennels, a cat room, and a kitchen area. Miss Archer was the first president, a position she held until her death on May 28, 1963, at age 82. In May of 1954, a
woman’s auxiliary was organized to help with fund raising to cover the league’s expenses. Although Miss Archer had contributed large amounts of money in support of the shelter, her fortune was depleted at the time of her death, leaving the league to continue without her support and several thousands of dollars in debt. At this point, the future of the shelter was in doubt. Some stockholders wanted to close its doors while others vowed to continue the league’s mission. continued to operate. In April of 1957, the league petitioned the City of Reading to ban the sale of dyed baby Easter animals, and on December 18, 1958, the ban became law. The league also was a leader in launching the era of kennel inspections. The ARL began as a “no kill” shelter, but in time there were more abandoned animals who needed shelter than there was room. After humane euthanasia was introduced, the shelter population almost doubled, from 400 animals per year to 845, with adoptions almost tripling, according to Mary Jane Jacoby, who was a friend

of Miss Archer and a charter member of the shelter. Jane also was an auxiliary member and has continued to be active with the league. She presently is serving on the board of directors. During Harry Brown, the ARL’s Executive Director’s 20-year tenure, the Animal Rescue League has grown into a modern animal shelter with kennels that can accommodate 60 dogs and 60 cats. To date, spaying and neutering are the only real methods of control over the vast number of unwanted dogs and cats. In 1959, the league was one of the few shelters in the United States to have a compulsory spaying/ neutering adoption policy. The league also joined with the Humane Society of the United States to identify dog dealers and private kennels that continued ani-

mal abuse practices. Because of the large number of laboratory animal dealers in the state, the league also lead the way in encouraging a stronger Pennsylvania Dog Law. State Sen. Gus Yatron introduced a stronger Dog Law bill that became law on Dec. 22, 1965. On Aug. 24, 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed into law the Laboratory Animal Welfare Act to increase protection for laboratory animals. Through its humane education programs and animal cruelty investigations by three state-certified humane and animal control officers, the crusading spirit of Miss Archer lives on today in the Animal Rescue League. Dairy Princess Jessica Duncan makes an appearance at Family Expo Dairy Princess Jessica Duncan will attend the Family Expo to promote milk products and the fairy industry in Berks County. Jessica was crowned the 2013-14 Berks County Dairy Princess at the Mohrsville Church of the Brethren recently. This coming year, Jessica will be traveling around Berks County promoting the Dairy Industry and the healthy benefits of eating dairy products. She was crowned by the outgoing Princess, Kayci Johns. She will have help promoting with Danica Rhoads who will serve as the Berks County Li’l Miss Dairy Princess. Danica was crowned by outgoing Li’l Miss Brooke
Bicksler. Jessica is the 16, year old daughter of Donald and Loretta Duncan of Ardounie Farm in Robesonia. Jessica is no new comer to promoting as she served as Berks Co. Li’l Miss Dairy Princess in 2003 and has also served as a Dairy Ambassador. She is a member of the Western Berks 4-H Dairy Club. This coming year Jessica will be a senior at Conrad Weiser High School. In school she is active in the Ski Club, Students Against Drunk Driving and is president of the JCL. She also plays on the varsity Lacrosse and Field Hockey teams. Danica is the 4 year old daughter of Darren and Sandy Rhoads of Barto. She
is currently attending a PreK program at the King’s Academy. Danica enjoys helping her dad haul cattle and in the summer, Danica likes to attend the fairs. During the pageant, Jessica had to answer an impromptu question from the judges. Their question to her was, “What is the biggest issue facing the dairy industry today?” Jessica’s response was that the public doesn’t realize how important the dairy industry is to them. She also had to perform a skit or a speech. Jessica decided to entertain the crowd with a skit where she talked about the many “hats” a dairy farmer has to wear.

Puppen Meister Productions brings country show to expo Puppen Meister Productions will be bringing a country show jamboree to the Redner’s Family Expo. Set to perform both days throughout the day, the show is set to entertain. After spending several years in the retail business, Ernest M. Wachter opened a candle manufacturing business in the early 70’s . Business was very good for a few years until the “wave” of novelties had passed and Ernest sold the business. His interests turned to glass and soon, he started engraving glassware and selling at craft shows up and down the east coast. A couple of years into engraving, Ernest met a
German Glassblower and became interested in hot glass. After some experimenting, he began making figurines and ornaments in hot glass the “German” way. One Christmas while selling glassware and German toys among which were marionettes, Ernest talked with a puppeteer friend about marionettes and they decided to put a small show together. Together, they bought their first marionettes and modified them to form a “circus” show. With six puppets, they put together a small 15 minute show. The seed was planted. Ernest continued to make additional marionettes using a variety of
materials, the show grew and the duo now had a 30-minute show with 14 marionettes. They soon found out they needed a new stage, and Ernest built an indoor stage. It too went through some changes until the present stage. Puppen Meister Productions now have both an indoor and an outdoor stage. Over the years, they have added games to the circus and marionette sales. The Circus ran for 7 years until 2006. It was time for a new show and Ernest decided that Puppen Meister needed a new show and through some discussion with friends, he decided on a Country show.
Country Kids Jamboree, an all-new barn stage 15 new marionettes with new music and script was soon created. In 2008, Puppen Meister also added a “live” performer to the show. New country games and pony rides. “Even though the economy is poor, everyone needs a little entertainment to keep their spirits up and Puppen Meister Productions will be there to raise your spirits and tickle you funny bone,” Ernest said. Their services include children’s entertainment, festival management, craft show promotions and business promotions.

Yocum Institute teen ensemble returns to Family Expo This year, the Yocum Institute for Arts Education Teen Theater Ensemble of Wyomissing will be making their return to the Redner’s Markets Family Expo. The Yocum Institute for Arts Education, formally the Institute of Arts, has been serving the community for over 75 years. In 2009, the institute was renamed to honor long-time donor, board member and community philanthropist, James H. Yocum, whose main focus was education. Quality instruction and access to the arts are
the top priorities of this institute; this is accomplished through their innovative programs and the expansion of partnerships to widen the impact and benefits of the arts in throughout community. Their mission: “Making the Arts Make a Difference.” Through this mission, the institute has increased the number of people served by means of private instruction, on-site classes, exhibits, productions, integrated arts summer camps and outreach programs from to more than 14,000 peo-
ple as of 2010. The Redner’s Family Expo is just one of the many on-site performances that the institute is involved with. The institute offers classes in the visual arts, dance, music and theater. Originally established in 1934 by Chest Wittell as the Wyomissing INstitute of Fine Arts, the Institute opened its doors with three music students. Under Lila Lerch, the first managing director, the institute grew to over 300 students and has been expanding ever since. An arts-based
