ROM T E ARTISTIC DIR CTOR
Welcome to a historic season at Long Wharf The atre. As we prepare to usher in a bold new chapter for the company, our commitment to sharing thrill ing, imaginative, and boundary-breaking stories remains. This season, we are curating your experi ence over three “acts.” For Act 1, we have three stories by visionary artists in conversation with each other, all sharing the same stage where so many wonderful memories have been made over the years.
We begin with a new play in development called Dignity, Always Dignity. When I began my tenure as Artistic Director, I im mediately phoned an artist who has always inspired me: Bryce Pinkham. I asked Bryce if there was a passion project he could bring to our audienc es and a few months later we were in a rehearsal room seeing the earliest seeds of this timely new play. Inspired by the golden age musical, Bryce and his brilliant collaborators Zack Fine, Rona Siddiqui, and Kirya Traber, are creating a theatrical meditation on our climate crisis through music and humor (in equal measure).
We then move on to a musical about Jelly Roll Morton that changed the game. New Haven, where many of the jazz greats performed, is a fitting place to share this groundbreaking musical that honors the power and transcendence of jazz. With Dennis Whitehead Darling and Patricia McGregor on our project, the process of bringing Jelly’s Last Jam to life has been pure joy. We are proud to produce this concert reading in partnership with the Stetson Branch of the New Haven Free Public Library, and Branch Manager Diane X Brown, who has been a champion of this project from the beginning.
And finally, our last story is one that honors our native community with a beautiful new play by Melissa Tantaquidgeon Zobel, directed by Madeline Sayet—both are members of the Mohegan Tribe here in Connecticut. Flying Bird’s Diary tells the story of Flying Bird, aka, Fidelia Fielding/Jeets Bodernosh shor, who fought “to save her language and culture against all odds.”
The Claire Tow Stage, in the C. Newton Schenck III Theatre, holds our history. This space is where we began our journey. It’s where we learned new things about ourselves and felt part of a larger community, discov ering new worlds with people who looked and sounded different than us.
I imagine many of you, like me, are holding mixed emotions as Long Wharf Theatre says farewell to its building of nearly 60 years. This a remarkable moment in the life of our theatre company, saying goodbye to a physical space and starting a new chapter of our story, together. I hope you will come on the journey with us to usher in the next 60 years.
Warmly yours,
Jacob G. PadrónFROM THE MANAGING DIRECTOR
Welcome to Act 1 of our 2022-23 season, our 58th year of creating theatre by, with, and for the Greater New Haven community. This is a season of transition and change, all in service of becoming more accessible to artists, audiences, and lifelong learners. We are shifting from being anchored to a space with four walls to making the entire City of New Haven our home, building a lively exchange of culture, conversation, and joyful gatherings in a multitude of Elm City spaces. December marks the end of our time at 222 Sargent Drive and the New Year will bring Long Wharf Theatre into venues across New Haven. Our administrative offices are moving to the heart of the Arts District on Audubon Street, and we are energized by being in community with our creative colleagues and partners every day.
If you’re looking for ways to support us this season, I have three simple suggestions:
See a show. You’re already here and we are grateful for it! We welcome you to share your experience with your friends and family, as well as to return and see other productions in our 2022-23 season. Events are continually updated at longwharf.org/programming.

In return, you receive first access to tickets, discounted admission, and invitations to special events. Become a Member today at longwharf.org/membership.
Make a gift. Donors provide essential resources that fuel our productions, new play commissions, and programming for Greater New Haven community members. Make a tax-deductible donation at longwharf.org/ donate or by texting LWT to 44321.
Long Wharf Theatre has been part of the New Haven community for nearly 60 years, and I welcome you to join us on this journey as we look ahead to 60 more. As a patron, a donor, and a neighbor—you are an essential partner in our daily work.
With gratitude, Kit Ingui

A SPECIAL LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT FOR FLYING BIRD’S DIARY
By Melissa Tantaquidgeon ZobelA land acknowledgement often begins with place, and this place is Quinnipiac, the traditional homeland of the Quinnipiac people, a nation hit particularly hard by the devastation of settler colonialism. More broadly, this place is Quinnetucket, or Connecticut, land of the long tidal river. Quinnetucket remains the home of many indigenous nations, among them the Mohegan, featured in today’s reading. As a Mohegan, I acknowledge and greet the generations and nations of Native people who have lived, still live, and will continue to live, here, in Quinnetucket. I acknowledge the Ancestors in a living way, as well, for our Algonquian language explains that they are always animate, alive and among us. I also acknowledge the others who belong to this land: floral, faunal, fungal, rock, weather, and spirit beings. Be longing matters because it defines our interconnected responsibility to this place. As you watch Flying Bird’s Diary, take a moment to consider this notion of interconnected belonging. May it enrich your appreciation of this ancient, beautiful, and many-spirited land.

Flying Bird’s Diary
By Melissa Tantaquidgeon Zobel // Directed by Madeline Sayet
The story of a true Connecticut hero, Flying Bird aka Fidelia Fielding/Jeets Bodernosh shor (1827-1908). We first encounter
Flying Bird, as a young Mohegan girl, in the 1800s, in a world attempting to erase everything she believes in. As the years pass, Flying Bird faces seemingly impossible obstacles but never loses sight of her goal: to save her language and culture against all odds.
ACT 2
A Community Event // October 14 + 15, 2022
Home(coming):
Farewell + Block Party
Conceived and directed by Jenny Koons 222 Sargent Drive + Audubon Street, New Haven
Together we will say goodbye to our home of nearly 60 years and build a collective dream for the future with an inspiring community event. A series of festive communal rituals and micro-performances will close out our time at Sargent Drive and move us, as a community, into broader New Haven. With us, we take the best parts of our history: our stories, our relationships, and memories of our extraordinary body of work. This fall, we begin writing the next chapters of our story with our communities.
A Virtual Community Event // 2023 New Haven Play Project
By Aaliyah Miller Directed by Halima FlynnThis community-based project aims to share stories of Muslim Americans, showcase their experiences, and begin meaningful dialogue with Muslim and non-Muslim communities throughout Connecticut. This season’s offering, I AM: American/Muslim, will be a multimedia production based on interviews with Muslim Americans, centering around a “Muslim mosaic” and painting the truth in contrast to the frequent demonization of Muslims in the media.
ACT 3
Production // In-Person, New Haven Spring 2023 Live From the Edge
By UNIVERSES Directed by Steven Sapp and Mildred Ruiz-SappA production by Long Wharf Theatre’s Mellon Foundation Playwrights-inResidence, UNIVERSES, Live From the Edge will showcase the ensemble’s special brand of fusion theatre in a “best of” evening that tracks the evolution of their poetic language from childhood rhymes and community rituals, to poetry and theater, hip-hop and gospel. Redefining what theatre is and who it speaks to, Live From the Edge is a unique performance event that turns the poem into a communal act. Steven and Mildred will have the opportunity to explore different neighborhoods in New Haven to find the right artistic container to present this work, demonstrating this new model’s ability to give power back to creators in determining how and where their works will be presented.

Support Long Wharf Theatre Today!
Our 58th season is a pioneering year for our institution. We are leaving 222 Sargent Drive to bring live performance, without barriers, to Greater New Haven audiences. We are welcoming our many communities—including you—by producing new work that authentically and joyfully reflects lived experiences on our stages. And we are centering Artistic Innovation in three groundbreaking ways, each leaning into the abundance found in partnership and collaboration.
• Our Artistic Ensemble is a collective of eight nationally respect ed artists who inform and inspire our daily work. Four members, including Madeline Sayet, are lending their talents to our stages this fall.
• We are creating new ways to discover talent through our Artistic Caucus, a collective of four national artists who support the Literary Offices at four regional theatres, including ours. They help us identify a new generation of writers while sparking new collaborations among our companies.
• We are strengthening our roots of deeply investing in new work for the American stage. With 12 projects under commission and in development, upcoming seasons will bring premiere plays and musicals from this roster of diverse, national artists.
Please consider making a tax-deductible gift today—in celebration of our nearly 60 years of history and to help ensure we are here for 60 more.
