D AR RI NDS It is with great joy that we welcome you to Long Wharf Theatre’s 2023-2024 season—one that is fifty-nine powerful, enduring, and boundary-breaking years in the making—and one in which we delight in the discovery that, even amidst moments of change, anything is possible. In 1997, Kathleen Chalfant transfixed the minds and transformed the hearts of Long Wharf Theatre audiences through her luminous turn as Vivian Bearing in Margaret Edson’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Wit. Donning her iconic baseball cap and hospital gown, Kathleen-as-Vivian embodied the universal human experience of how it might look, what it might mean, and how it might feel to stare down one’s own mortality while affirming one’s dignity. It was a performance for the ages.

Jacob G. Padrón

Kit Ingui

Now in an exciting partnership with Keen Company, an acclaimed Off-Broadway theatre, Long Wharf is thrilled to have this theatre legend return to New Haven in Joan Didion’s The Year of Magical Thinking. In a stunning reversal of fate, Kathleen-as-Joan now faces the fragile mortality of her daughter and husband. Through the vessel of Chalfant’s virtuosic artistry, one performer across twenty-six years and in one city illuminates for us the courageous possibilities on the other side of change. This production marks an exciting moment in the life of Long Wharf Theatre. We are literally bringing theatre to the people. But now, instead of just one single stage, The Year of Magical Thinking is playing on 20 different stages in numerous neighborhoods throughout Greater New Haven. Boundary-breaking theatre is no longer simply about the world class art we make; it is us reaching out to you to imagine and celebrate our communities in bold and innovative ways. We are deeply grateful to director Jonathan Silverstein, whose visionary leadership and artistry have made this production possible; we are indebted to Jonathan for his partnership with us. In our 2023-2024 season, what might we share through the stories brought to life on all the “stages” of Long Wharf Theatre? We hope to discover with you that, together, everything is possible. Warmly yours,

Jacob G. Padrón, Artistic Director

Kit Ingui, Managing Director

“Life changes in the instant. The ordinary instant.” – Joan Didion, The Year of Magical Thinking THE YEAR OF MAGICAL THINKING 3

ROM T E DIRECT OR Theater can happen anywhere. It doesn’t need a building, stage, or fancy sets and lights. Of course, I love the ritual of going to the theater in the typical way: the lights going to black, the music swelling, and the actors appearing as if magically materializing before our eyes. However, when the brilliant Kathleen Chalfant and I first met several years ago to discuss Keen Company’s production of this play, she read it to me in her kitchen. It was at that moment that I realized that the most impactful way to experience Didion’s universal work would be to do so intimately, outside of the theater. Instead of an actor on stage, in the light, and the audience in the dark, it was important to me that everyone share the same space and be on equal terms. Theater stimulates connection. It is my hope you feel especially connected tonight: to the performer, to your fellow audience members and to the challenges and joys of the human condition itself.

– JONATHAN SILVERSTEIN

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT We acknowledge that indigenous peoples and nations have for generations stewarded the lands and waterways of what we now call the state of Connecticut. We honor and respect the enduring relationship that exists between these peoples and nations and this land. The offices of Long Wharf Theatre, the supporter and producer of this production, are located on the unceded territory of the Quinnipiac, Paugussett and Wappinger peoples. We remind ourselves that along with stolen land came stolen people. It is our responsibility to the future to know our past.

About Long Wharf Theatre Birthed during America’s regional theatre movement, Long Wharf Theatre opened its doors on July 4, 1965 with an inaugural production of Arthur Miller’s The Crucible. Guided by our three core pillars of artistic innovation, radical inclusion, and kaleidoscopic partnerships, we continue to build on an extraordinary body of more than 400 world-class productions that represent the best of classic plays, beloved musicals, and world premieres, including works by Anna Deavere Smith, Paula Vogel, Tracey Scott Wilson, Lloyd Suh, Tina Landau, Whitney White, Ricardo Pérez González, and Dominique Morrisseau. Recognized for a historic commitment to commissioning, developing, and producing new plays that expand the legacy of storytelling in the American theatre—including three winners of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama: D.L. Coburn’s The Gin Game, Michael Cristopher’s The Shadow Box, and Margaret Edson’s Wit—Long Wharf Theatre transferred more than 30 successful productions to Broadway or Off-Broadway. In recognition of its artistic achievements, Long Wharf Theatre won a Tony Award; one of the first regional theatres to receive this honor. Founded with the mission of creating an accessible theatre culture unique to the Greater New Haven community, Long Wharf Theatre (Jacob G. Padrón, Artistic Director; Kit Ingui, Managing Director) is now entering a bold new chapter in its storied history moving beyond its physical home of nearly 60 years to activate venues, neighborhoods, and public spaces throughout our city and region to bring theatre to everyone. 8 LONG WHARF THEATRE
