Welcome to Portugal in 2014
I’d like to welcome Irish golfers to Portugal in 2014 First, I would like to thank Destination Golf Media for publishing Destination Golf Portugal once again. I see it as great importance for promoting golf tourism to Portugal. Nature has blessed Portugal with over 3,000 hours of sun per year and over 850 kilometres of coastline. There are numerous white sandy beaches for holiday makers that want to relax on holidays. The vibrant towns are full of quality restaurants and bars where you can try some local delicacies. If you are looking for something different from your holiday to Portugal, why not explore our Nature Parks or experience the warmth of the local people our historic villages, which are among the country’s best kept secrets. If one word could sum up a visit to Portugal, it would be romance. Because wherever you stay in the country, you’ll be sure to enjoy a truly romantic stay. Welcome to Portugal and all it has to offer.

Welcome
EDITORS LETTER
Welcome to Destination Golf Portugal 2014. Destination Golf Portugal was launched to provide a definitive guide to golf in Portugal, educating the thousands of golfers that travel to Portugal each year about where to play, where to stay and where to find the best deals. Since its launch in 2010, Destination Golf Portugal has established itself as the Official voice of Portuguese golf tourism in Ireland. We are delighted to bring you our Edition for 2014/15, published in close association with our friends in the Portuguese Trade and Tourism Office and the various regional tourism offices in Portugal. Over the following 96-pages, we visit nine different golf destinations across the islands of Madeira and the Azores; and the popular mainland destinations of the Algarve, Lisbon and Porto e Norte. There’s no doubt that Portugal has been a magnet for golf tourism over the past three decades. It now is one of the leading golf destinations in the World, with award winning golf courses and golf hotels dotted around the Country. Travelling golfers have over eighty golf courses to choose from, with Championship designs by renowned architects such as Jack Nicklaus, Seve Ballesteros and Robert Trent Jones, who used the natural Portuguese terrain and coastline to create their works of art. Across the last five years Destination Golf representatives have travelled to all four corners of Portugal with their clubs in tow. It is a fascinating country for tourism, and the travelling golfer is spoilt with a wealth of choice. In this publication we will provide a short review of every course, but it’s our “Editors Choice” recommendations that deserve your best attention. Enjoy Portugal and enjoy this golf guide.

ALGARVE (WEST) The Western Algarve is Europe’s most westerly coastline, where the powerful waves beat against the rugged coastline. This part of the Algarve has so much to offer. The sea is warm, the beaches are long, the climate is wonderful and the holiday villages, hotels and luxury resorts are superb places to stay. You will find small fishing villages dotted along the coastline such as Sagres. Another popular tourist attraction is Cape St Vincen, a colourful lighthouse famous for being located at the Westernmost tip of Europe.

Onyria Palmares The new Palmares Golf Course is a course of great beauty. It recently reopened, with a brand new layout designed by Robert Trent Jones Jnr that perfectly blends mountain and coastal views. The par-71 layout uses a blend of manicured landscapes which boast a mix landscape of white sand and high dunes. New layout has plenty of breathtaking views to Alvor or to the sea mixed with great holes in the dunes. Located close to the historic city of Lagos, Palmares offers a wonderful blend of beach and mountain scenery. Its clubhouse affords a fantastic panoramic view over a 25-km stretch of Atlantic coastline. The Torneio das Amendoeiras em Flor, the oldest amateur tournament in the Algarve, has been played here since 1977.
Boavista
Penina Golf Resort
Boavista
Only a short drive from Portimao is the stunning Penina Golf Resort. Set in a vast 360 acre estate, Penina offers golf enthusiasts a complete golf break. Penina offers three golf courses: an 18-hole par-73 Championship Course, A 9-hole Academy course and a 9-hole Resort Course. The Sir Henry Cotton Championship course, has hosted the Portuguese Open eight times and is a must play on any visit to the Western Algarve. The Academy course and the Resort course both provide a golfer the opportunity to fine-tune one’s short game, while providing gentle training grounds for beginners. The greens are relatively small and therefore accuracy off the tee and for approach shots is required and it also provides players the opportunity to fine tune their short game.
Opened in January 2002, the Boavista golf course is one of the Algarve’s most recent courses and is built in the natural Algarvian landscape. The 18-hole Championship course is a design by Howard Swan. Built on a flat area just 200 metres from the Atlantic, the course is close to Praia da Luz beach. Half the course is located in the National Agricultural Reserve; typical trees of the Algarve (almond and carob) and ancient ruins form the characteristic landscape of this versatile course. One of the most unforgettable holes is the spectacular seventh, a par 4 built with the sea as a backdrop and panoramic views sweeping from the coast at Praia da Luz across to the mountains Serra de Monchique.
Vale de Milho
Parque de Floresta
Vale de Milho is a short nine-hole course located close to the village of Carvoeiro. It uniquely comprises of par-3 holes and only has a total length of 926 metres. That said, many golfers find this course quite challenging and very attractive, thanks to its waterfalls and wonderful views over the sea. So, if you want to practise your short iron shots, spend some time in a beautiful and relaxing landscape and enjoy yourself at the same time, you will not be disappointed by this course.
Situated in the westernmost part of the Algarve, only 15 minutes away from the city of Lagos, this varied course spreads over the slopes of the hills overlooking the ocean. The Parque da Floresta golf course was designed by the Spanish architect Pepe Gancedo, whose general philosophy is to interfere with nature as little as possible. The fairways therefore accompany the natural contours of the terrain, spreading along the valleys and gorges, with their vineyards and eucalyptus groves, bordered by olive-trees, palms and pines. With an enjoyable par-71 course and full resort facilities, Parque da Floresta always proves popular with tourists.

Pestana Gramacho Another of the Pestana Group Courses, this course is the brainchild of Nick Price, the former world No.1 player and renowned golf course architect, Ronald Fream. Together they have created a uniquely designed 18 hole course with 27 varied greens that enable the golfer to play the same course with new challenges several times. This Championship course hosted the Portuguese Ladies Open in 2005 and 2007, and prides itself on maintaining tournament standard conditions all year. The design technique involves well guarded greens with clever bunkering that makes the player think before going directly for the pin. Some times the centre of the green is a better option. The boulder outcrops and dry stone walling to the fig, carob and olive trees, have been complemented by art fully positioned lakes and bunkers.

Pestana Vale da Pinta
Pestana Vale da Pinta
Pestana Alto Golf
The Vale da Pinta Course is one of the best-designed courses in Europe. Inaugurated in 1992, it is a Championship course with an exceptional layout designed by the famous American golf course architect, Ronald Fream. Since 1992 it has earned a deserved reputation for the outstanding level of maintenance of the course, and its design, which makes it a challenge to golfers of all standards. The Pinta Course was 8 consecutive times host to the Seniors Tour. The fairways are Bermuda grass, while strategically positioned sand bunkers protect the greens, clad in Pen Cross Bent, and two ornamental lakes influence play at four different holes around the course.
Located between the picturesque village of Alvor and the bustling tourist resort of Praia da Rocha, Alto Golf has established itself as one of the most popular golf courses in the Algarve. Designed by the legendary golf course architect Sir Henry Cotton, the rolling fairways and elevated greens make for an enjoyable experience for all levels of player. With the combination of a fantastic golf course, a fully serviced golf clubhouse, state of the art driving range and PGA professional golf academy, Alto will cater to your every golfing need. Located close to numerous stunning beaches and a wide variety of traditional and international restaurants and bars, Alto Golf is the perfect location for that much needed break in the sunshine.
Pestana Silves
Espiche Golf
Pestana Silves is a serene spot, but the course is anything but the proverbial walk in the park. From the very opening tee shot, the golfer is faced with water hazards on both sides, rewarding the brave with an easier approach to the green. Silves encourages and rewards attacking play. The excellent condition, all year round, is ideal for low scoring. A constant text of precision play will be rewarded with birdie chances. Most holes offer a spectacular mountain and valley view, overlooking palm trees and olive groves. This new course is designed by Sir Henry Cotton and is located in an quite part of the Algarve.
Located just outside the popular fishing town of Lagos in the Western Algarve lies the picturesque course of Espice Golf. This challenging 5862 meter par-72 layout offer superb rolling terrain to include lakes, streams and indigenous plants. Unlike a majority of courses in the Algarve, Espiche is set in the countryside with unspoilt views of vineyards and the Monchique Mountains. Its new clubhouse was built on the site of an old Algarvian farm, maintaining its sense of heritage. It boasts stunning terrace views to the countryside. Facilities include bar, restaurant, changing rooms and reception area. There’s also a driving range to sharpen your game.
20
Martinhal Beach Resort & Hotel Situated in a stunning position overlooking Martinhal Beach and set within a protected natural park, Martinhal Beach Resort & Hotel is a 5 star family beach resort that is located close to the historic town of Sagres, in the unspoilt Western Algarve. There is a wide selection of spacious family houses, or the five star hotel itself has 37 rooms, including two duplex Beach Suites, which all have private balconies or terraces that afford impressive ocean views. The essence of the resort is one of affordable, understated luxury and genuine hospitality that offers a stylish contemporary alternative to the more traditional European beach resorts.
Whether you are a group or individual golfer, a short car trip will have you at any of these great courses in no time at all. Maybe your partner will be happier using the hotel facilities or just relaxing in the superb Spa, while you test your skills on one of the championship courses? For further information and T&C’s log onto www.martinhal.com
There’s an exhilarating choice of activities to take part in at Martinhal Beach Resort & Hotel, from a leisurely swim in one of the pools, to a thrilling scuba-dive expedition. Take a leisurely cycle, or grab a mountain bike for a more adrenaline filled ride. The high-spirited can go climbing, or go parasailing, but a more down to earth option is to hike one of the many coastal paths that take in dramatic cliff-top views. And a holiday in the Algarve wouldn’t be the same without teeing off on one of the many superb golf courses that the region is famous for. The Western Algarve always proves popular, boasting top quality golf courses like Penina, Boavista, Parque de Floresta, CS Morgado and Palmares. If you are planning a visit to this area, Destination Golf Portugal recommends Martinhal Beach Resort & Hotel as the ideal base to explore these great courses.
21
Oceanico O’Connor Perfectly complementing the Faldo Course, whilst taking advantage of the rich valley soil in contrast to the arid hillside, Christy O’Connor Jnr’s course at Amendoeira offers no less of a challenge. Large areas of water demand accurate play and creative shot making, and these lakes and streams are to be maintained as a wildlife sanctuary. Holes 7, 8 and 9 are cleverly guarded by a lake that comes into play on a few occasions. This lake has been stragetically designed so golfers think that it is just there for astetic beauty but they could get caught. Locals call it the Amen Corner of the course. Other large bodies of water with meandering features will challenge golfers throughout the round. The 18th hole brings a fantastic finish, a gentle climb with the river running along the right hand side. Once you get up there and look down on the golf course, you will feel you have been blessed.
www.destinationgolf.ie
Alamos
Oceanico Faldo
Morguado do Reguengo
Surrounded by rocky outcrops and meandering water features, this Nick Faldo designed golf course is designed to test accuracy. The course is full of character - ancient olive trees, mature trees, cacti, wild herbs and desert scrub bunkers of crushed limestone. Due to its elevation in some parts, the course boasts stunning views of the Alcantarilha countryside, over the large orange groves to the mountains in the distance. Positional play is key, but there are some great risk and reward holes on offer too, especially on the earlier holes that play close to the clubhouse. After leaving high ground to the west, the eighteenth brings the final chapter to a close with a magnificent par 5. By then, a drink in the stunning clubhouse has been well earned.
Situated in the Barrocal region of the Algarve, many call this a miniature paradise with valleys, lagoons, forests, vegetable gardens, orchards and a variety of wild animals. This championship course ranks as one of the toughest and longest of all courses in the Algarve. The testing 6,399 metres par-73 layout suits the longer hitters. The course consists of five par-5’s, nine pa-3’s and four par-4’s. Big greens and deep bunkers are common place around the course. Two lakes come into play on the front and back nine. Given the challenge on offer, it would be advised to use the practise facilities before taking on this course. On offer is a practise area, driving range, chipping green and putting green.
Alamos
Pine Cliffs
Opened in 2006, the Alamos course is one of the latest courses to be added to the golf portfolio in the Algarve. Lying to the north of Portimao it’s located in close proximity to Morgado do Reguengo golf course. The setting is a large 980 hectare estate through undulating small valleys. This course is designed with big putting surfaces, which places a stronger emphasis on good putting skills. In some parts, the greens are quite undulating with several tiers. Deep bunkers that are deliberately hanging close to the greens require accurate approach shots. This course is full of character and is rapidly growing in stature.
Opened in 1990, Pine Cliffs is a compact 9-hole golf course that is surrounded by magnificent old pine trees. This is not a long course, but it does demand accuracy. No more so than the much pictured devils parlour, a challenging par-3 that crosses the cliffs, with breathtaking views to the Atlantic Ocean. The Pine Cliffs golf course provides a well equipped golf academy that meets the requirements of both the hobby golfer as well as the tournament player. Celebrities are often spotted at Pine Cliffs, as they holiday in the luxurious Sheraton Hotel that is onsite. For several years, the club president was British motor racing star Nigel Mansell.

ALGARVE (CENTRAL) Situated in the extreme south of Portugal, the central Algarve is one of Europe’s most popular haunts for holiday makers. The region is a delight to visit all year round with the golden sandy beaches on the coast offering a haven for sun seekers whilst the sleepy hillside villages further inland offer peace and tranquillity for those looking to get away from the stresses and strains of everyday life. Resorts including Albufeira, Praia da Rocha, and Vilamoura, are among central Algarve’s main holiday destinations. Vilamoura Marina offers an excellent selection restaurants, bars, entertainment and a variety of nightlife ranging from cabaret shows to casinos.

San Lorenzo Golf San Lorenzo offers the golfer a rare beauty and unique golfing experience. Situated in the exclusive Quinta do Lago estate, the course runs parallel to the Parque Natural da Ria Formosa which is always oozing with wildlife and alive with chirpy sounds of nature. The course is a very enjoyable 6,238 metre par-72 layout, but one can be forgiven to be distracted by the panoramic beach views and inherent beauty. Designed in 1988 by American golf architect, Joseph Lee and his partner, W. Roquemore, the course is heavily trafficked by club members. It is owned by Hotel Dona Filipa, who run golf packages throughout the year and pre-booking is advised. The layout presents 18 cleverly carved holes that weave their way through lakes, pine wood forests and white sanded beaches that are dotted along the Algarve coastline. The well conditioned course presents a golfer with fast greens, elevated tees, fairways bunkers and a vast array of water hazards.San Lorenzo has won recognition and acclaim by global golfing media and press. Golf World magazine previously voted San Lorenzo as one of the top five courses in Europe.

Oceanico Old Any golf course with “old” in the name always describes a charm and a layout untouched beauty. Although this course has had a facelift of two since it opened in 1969, no major changes were made to the magnificent layout. Often described as the Grande Dame of Algarve courses, it meanders throughout impressive pine trees which line most of the holes. This is one of the courses in Portugal that will always stay in the memory of visiting golfers. After an enjoyable 18-holes on the Old Course, a fully serviced clubhouse awaits those who feel they’ve earned a nice cold beer.

Oceanico Laguna
Oceanico Laguna
Oceanico Pinhal
This modern course is laid out over low lying coastal terrain. Its many water hazards and few trees makes it considerably different from the other courses in this area and many of its holes convey a links feel. U.S. golf architect Joseph Lee designed this course which has been subject to continual improvements over the years. Measuring 6,121 metres from the white tees, the par 72 course includes several lakes which influence play on a total of 11 holes. Apart from the lakes and an impressive total of 79 bunkers across this design, another hazard is the wind that frequently blows over this somewhat exposed location. Oce창nico Laguna shares a large, welcoming clubhouse with the neighbouring Oce창nico Millennium Course.
Pinhal is the second oldest golf course in the Vilamoura region. Although it was originally designed by Frank Pennink (who also designed the Old Course), several modifications were made by Robert Trent Jones Sr. in 1985. One of the major change was to lengthening the course to 6,353 metres to cater for advances in modern technology. The clubhouse was also completely renovated at the turn of the millennium, to now boast stunning panoramas from the large veranda. A game of golf at Pinhal is chatacterised by gently sloping terrain which is enclosed by numerous umbrella and Atlantic pines that tower over the fairways. There are a few waters features, like well positioned ponds but most are there to catch a very errant shot.
Oceanico Millennium The aspect of this course leads itself to strong winds, which usually comes into play. In general, the course is fairly exposed, although some earlier holes play between pine trees - similar to the neighbouring fairways of the Old Course and Pinhal. In this more wooded area, the fairways are narrower and require greater accuracy - while the rest of the course has a clear landscape enriched by lakes at the 4th, 17th and 18th holes. Major work was put into refurbishing this course by Martin Hawtree, the renowned UK golf architect. The end result is an exciting 18-hole course that makes it one of the main courses in Vilamoura.

Oceanico Victoria Golf Course Seen by many as the jewel of the golf portfolio in the Algarve, Victoria Golf Course is one of seven courses in the Algarve that are owned and managed by the Oceanico Group. The Championship par-72 course measures over 6,560 metres and occupies a total area of 90 hectares. Designed by legendary golfer Arnold Palmer, this possesses wide undulating fairways, large greens, man made lakes, well positioned bunkers, and typical Portuguese vegetation such as carob, olive and almond trees. The one defining character is the 18 cleverly designed putting greens, which truly test a golfer’s short game. Fantastic practise facilities include a driving range and enormous putting green of 2,500m2. The course has hosted many prestigious tournaments, and been home to the Portuguese Masters on the European Tour for the last few years.

Quinta Do Lago South Course
Salgados Golf Course
Quinta Do Lago South Course
Situated in one of the best-known regions of the Algarve, to the west of Albufeira, Salgados Golf is already a ‘postcard’ of Portuguese golf. It’s proximity of the sea and the variety of lakes make this a very interesting test of golfing skills, different from other courses in the Algarve. If you stay in the popular resort of Albufeira, a colourful fishing resort with plenty of après golf, Salgados Golf is practically on your doorstep at only 3km away. The eighteen holes at Salgados Golf are pleasant with a welcoming Club House waiting for you at the end of your round.
Located close to Almancil in the heart of the Algarve lies the two golf courses at Quinta do Lago. The 6,900 par-72 South Course was designed by William Mitchell. Set in a pine forest, with small swelling hills dotting the fairways, it has hosted the Portuguese Open seven times and is a truly magnificent course. Although the course lends itself toward the better golfer, there are different tee positions on offer to cater for all categories, making the course pleasurable for all. The course regularly ranks high in global golf course rankings. It’s clever design will assess ones game, given the strategic bunkering, occasional water hazards and contoured greens.
Quinta Do Lago North Course
Pine Cliffs
In case one designer wasn’t enough, the Quinta do Lago North Course has the boasting rights of requiring two architects. The first was William Mitchell (who designed the South Course) who was responsible for 1 to 5 and 15 to 18 in 1974. The other holes were designed by Joseph Lee, which opened in 1989. The terrain was to inspire many future designs. The umbrella pine trees crop up to catch the errant golf ball, while the creeping bent grass fairways are typical to Mediterranean courses. Regular players here are convinced that a person who draws the ball will succeed best, given the anti-clockwise arrangement of the holes.

Balaia
Balaia
Pinheiros Altos
Just outside the popular region of Albufeira is the popular Balaia golf course. A nine Par 3 hole gem that will test every golfer, irrespective of their handicap. With holes ranging in distance from 67 metres to 160 metres featuring undulating fairways and excellent greens, the course will test your distance control and short game. From the very start, the beauty of this course is apparent as the first hole is surrounded by two lakes that are divided by an old wooden bridge. Full Clubhouse facilities are available after your round.
Pinheiros Altos is an independent 27-hole course designed by Ronald Fream and Jorge Santana. The course has an unusual layout with three nines of contrasting character -- ‘The Pines’, ‘The Corks’ and ‘The Olives’. The Pines, as its name suggests, meanders through typical Algarvian pine woods whereas many water hazards must be negotiated coming home. The rest is much flatter but the holes work their way through a series of lakes requiring accurate driving and precise iron play. The greens have a reputation for being the most difficult to read and to hit because they are small and undulating and usually in very good condition. The course embraces part of the Ria Formosa Natural Park, making this another course of beauty and challenge for players of all standards.
Vale de Lobo - Royal Course
Pestana Vila Sol Golf Course
The Royal Golf Course has rolling fairways set amidst pine trees and beautiful lakes surrounded by wild flowers. Its features include the almost island green of the 9th and the famous 16th, with cliff-top carryover – one of the most celebrated golfing images in the world, which has become the veritable symbol of golf in the Algarve. But there are many other challenges along its length, in particular numerous narrow fairways, bordered by age-old pine forest, which make the Royal a real test of a golfer’s accuracy and concentration. This course was designed by top American golf architect Rocky Roquemore, based on original drawings made by Sir Henry Cotton.
The magnificent 27-hole course at Pestana Vila Sol Spa & Golf Resort is surrounded by a vast 150 hectares. The resort is situated in the heart of one of the most highly developed tourist areas in the Algarve. It has stunning natural surroundings with a vast range of fauna, animal and plant life. At Pestana Vila Sol Golf you will find a fabulous Donald Steel design, which stretches along a wide valley, naturally sculpted by Mother Nature and divided into three loops with three different levels of difficulty: Prime, Challenge and Prestige. Pestana Vila Sol Golf has twice played host to the Portuguese Open, in 1992 and 1993. It was honoured by the Green Globe organisation in 1996 with the Green Flag award, certification of meeting their environmental requirements.

Vale de Lobo - Ocean Course The Ocean Golf Course features undulating fairways which run alongside nature reserve, before leading gently down to the shores of the Atlantic. Its emblematic holes are two challenging and spectacular Par 4s, the 11th and the 14th – which treat golfers to some of the most spectacular views in the Algarve – and the Par 3 15th, which runs alongside the beach. Playing to your handicap on The Ocean course is a difficult task, due to the challenging design and distracting beauty that it provides.

Quinta do lago Laranjal A demonstration in excellence is once more shown by Quinta do Lago, as Laranjal golf course ticks all the boxes. A personalised service blended with the finest in golf refinement. This is the latest of the three courses at Quinta do Lago. This 18-hole championship layout is a true test. Its par-72 6,480 metre length is set amongst umbrella pines, cork-oaks and orange trees, owing to this previous state as an orange grove. The narrow Bermuda grass fairways and well defined Penn A4 greens require concentration and accuracy to navigate this testing route laid out on a rolling and distinctive terrain. Much is expected from this course over the coming years, and it is sure to grown in demand and popularity.

Quinta do Vale
Benamor
Quinta do Vale
Officially opened in March 2000, this course is the first golf course to open east of the capital of the Algarve, Faro, and lies just outside of Tavira. The owning Martins Dias family invited the late Sir Henry Cotton make a concept design for an 18-hole course. Sir Henry was inspired by the beautiful church next to the site of the Clubhouse and by its spectacular location. The final result is a delightful par 71 golf course of 5,500metres. Benamor offers all golfers a pleasant test of golf. The course is undulating but not hilly. The views of the mountains to the North and the Atlantic Ocean to the South are stunning. The greens, tees and fairways are always kept in good condition. Players’ accuracy is particularly called upon by the architects’ retention of as many of the old trees as feasible. These natural obstacles coupled with strategic placed bunkers and occasional water hazards make the course a worthwhile challenge.
Designed by Severiano Ballesteros, Quinta do Vale Golf Resort features an 18-hole Championship layout including 6 Par-5´s, 6 Par-4´s and 6 Par-3´s. The course has Bermuda grass fairways, Bent grass greens and the rough is abundant with Festuca & Ryegrass. Belas
Belas
Lisbon Sports Club
Belas is a unique golf course. The layout is extraordinary, with several fairways and greens set in deep valleys, and it affords unforgettable panoramic scenery to golfers and visitors. The course was designed by the renowned golf course architect Rocky Roquemore. It has five lakes throughout its winding layout, fed by various small and picturesque waterfalls. The course measures 6,380 off the back tees, providing a tough par-72 layout. It demands both skill and tactical play, and is acknowledged both locally and internationally as one of Portugal’s best constructed layouts. The course also boasts a driving range and two practice putting greens. The clubhouse offers all the services necessary for a championship course.
Originally Lisbon Sports Club dates back to 1880, when a group of English residents living in the Lisbon area, founded a Sports Club. By 1890 they had built a small six hole golf course in Alges. Then in 1962 the Club moved to Casal de Carregueira, where it remains today situated about 20 km from Cascais and Lisbon. The Martin Hawtree course was inaugurated with nine holes, five more holes were added a few years later and then finally in 1992 its eighteen holes were completed. A 5,278 metre par-69 layout means it is a playable course for all. The narrow fairways lined with beautiful old trees and abundant vegetation blend in perfectly with the natural surroundings. There is a comfortable Club House with its veranda overlooking the magnificent woodland.
Golf do Estoril
Belavista
Golf do Estoril is a championship course with bags of history and fame. One of the oldest golf courses in Portugal, Golf do Estoril offers its visitors spectacular views over the Atlantic Ocean. The course has been used on numerous occasions for the Portuguese Open, as well as for international amateur championships. It is a short but challenging course, designed by Mackenzie Ross, who made excellent use of the surrounding pine-trees and eucalyptuses – which, coupled with the uneven terrain, make the course more a test of accuracy than of the ability to hit the ball long distances. The course is popular with golfers, so the addition of a second 9-holes is an additional benefit.
Belavista is located within the city of Lisbon, so not quite part of the Oeste region. It was the first Municipal golf course in Portugal and was opened to cater for the business man and social golfers would can only manage 2 hours of golf. This is a short and but difficult course as six artificial lakes come into play. This course is also ideal for a golfer that wants to practise their game before taking on a bigger course, as it has a practise range. It has three par-3’s and six par-4’s.

The Monastery Course (also known as Mosteiro course) plays 2,588 meters par-35 and is generally less undulating than the its sister course. Its lakes also provide their own special beauty and difficulty.
Located in the Sintra Natural Park, this course is ranked in the top 30 Courses in Continental Europe. The Atlantic Course designed by the famed Robert Trent Jones Jnr, is escapist golf at its best. With its bold drives, courageous approaches and artful greens, it is both an adrenalin rush and a soothing journey through one of Portugal’s most inspiring landscapes. The opening holes and the final flourish share a wooded vale in the shadow of the rocky mountains, while others arc and plunge over scented hillsides. Exciting at every turn, this championship test and host to the Portuguese Open, is a master of variety and thrills.

The verdant foothills of the Sintra Mountains offer a breathtaking backdrop for the Pestana Beloura Golf Course. Here the famous American golf course architect Rocky Roquemore has conceived a course that will stretch both your imagination and ability yet provide an enjoyable challenge to golfers of all levels. Over 40,000 Eucalyptus, Oak, Pine, Magnolia, Palm and other exotic trees and plants have been planted on this gently undulating Par 73, 18 hole course that measures 5,846 metres from the Men’s Tees and 4,952 from the Ladies Tees. Water comes into play on many of the holes as they meander between the various lakes and streams that border the Fairways. The course is irrigated automatically from its own water supplies, guaranteeing crisp lies and holding greens. 59

LISBON (COSTA AZUL) Costa Azul is the name given to the coast south of Lisbon, which joins Alentejo and runs down towards the Algarve. In a sheltered estuary, you find the historic city of SetĂşbal, the third-largest in Portugal. A number of fishing villages like Sesimbra have retained their working atmosphere and charm, while the beaches compare favourably with the big crowds that sunbathe in the Algarve. Apart from golf, there many organised activities that you can do on the Costa, such as diving, balloon flights, cycling excursions.

Ribagofe I
Ribagolfe I
Ribagolfe II
Once described as the ‘Valderrama of Portugal’, Ribagolfe I provides a superb test of golf in a unique and natural setting 40 minutes from Lisbon, with the experience akin to millionaire’s golf with not a house to be seen and each hole sheltered from the view of the others. Set in a beautiful cork oak forest and boasting superb oversized greens, Ribagolfe measures 7,370 yards from the back tees and has hosted the first stage of the European Tour Qualifying School since 2009.
A shorter test than its sibling but still measuring more than 6,800 yards, Ribagolfe II is a great compliment to Ribagolfe I. Blessed with the same indigenous cork oak canvass, the course designers have crafted a more forgiving but equally appealing golf course with wider fairways and landing areas. The huge, moderately contoured greens, however, provide a stiff test if you’re to score well.

Designed by Donald Steel, the course plays up to more than 7,000 yards, with well-designed, strategically-placed bunkers and greens offering a layout that will challenge golfers of all abilities and the gently undulating land makes for an easy, pleasant walk.

Quinta do Peru Golf & Country Club
Aroeira I
Quinta do Peru Golf & Country Club
Aoeira I is located 20 minutes from Lisbon, to the south of the River Tagus, Aroeira offers golfers the perfect combination of a championship course set amidst exuberant natural surroundings. Frank Pennink designed this course in a pinewood dotted with wild flowers, which is a nature reserve inhabited by many different species of birds. Because of its densely wooded nature, the British press have christened this course the “Lisbon Wentworth”, due to its similarity with the famous golf course near London. In 1996 and 1997, Aroeira hosted the Portuguese Open on the European Tour. Make sure not to leave the area before taking some time to contemplate the vast expanse of sand, sea and sky close to the course at Costa de Caparica, a beach that lies at the foot of a fossile reef (a protected natural area).
With the Arrábida mountains as its backdrop, the Quinta do Peru golf course offers amateurs a pleasant game, whilst also presenting a challenge for professionals. The course’s recognised quality has led to its hosting several events, including the Grande Final of the UAP Challenge Tour in 1995 and 1996. The front nine can be quite tricky, as the many trees and wild flowers need to be avoided. A real feature hole on this course is the par-3 eight. This 200-yard hole requires a precise shot over water to an undulating green. Aside from the great course, tourism is always popular in this region. Don’t forget to enjoy a drive or a walk through the Serra
Aroeira II
Oeiras Golf
A new course in the Lisbon area, this course has a fairly different concept of golf from Aroeira I, consisting of large fast greens. Despite the inviting nature of its greens, the course becomes increasingly difficult as you work your way around the front nine. Unlike its older sister course, the new course has bunkers on the fairways, some of them in the Scottish style of pot bunkers. But the sand traps are not the only obstacle that have to be taken into account as the course also have five large lakes, water is a fairly constant hazard, particularly at the last nine holes.
Oeiras Golf & Residence is located in the municipality of Oeiras, next to the Tagus Park. Its superb location is just minutes from the centre of Oeiras, the city of Lisbon and Cascais and close to main roads such as the A5 highway. A 9-hole golf course, drivingrange and clubhouse form part of a new residential complex that includes Semi-Detached Houses, Townhouses, and Apartments.

LISBON (OESTE) This region is fondly known as the ‘land of sea and vineyards’. Located around 1-hour north of Lisbon city, the Oeste region is maginficently picturesque with white houses, maritime coast, green countryside and a very pleasant climate. Powerful wind generators tower above the small villages, maximising the use of strong prevailing winds. The region boasts unique activities not to be missed such as the Thermal Baths, the ‘wine & vineyards route’, the medieval city of Óbidos, and the surfing capital of Peniche. The Castle of Óbidos is now recognised as a Pousada, and often acclaimed to be the most romantic of all the stunning Pousadas in Portugal. Other visits should include the Roman Aqueduct at Obidos and the Fort of St. John the Baptist. There are countless cultural and tourist-oriented events in this region, with the Chocolate Festival being one of the most popular. 71
Praia del Rey Boasting one of the most idyllic natural settings of any golf course, Praia D’El Prey is set between the sea on one side and a patch of green countryside on the other. This golf course stretches over dunes, cliffs and pinewoods, forming a natural backdrop for a game of golf on one of the sunniest stretches of the Portuguese coast. The Praia d’El Rey course is full of surprises: on the 2nd hole, you play with a view towards the nature reserve of the Berlengas Islands; on the 12th, the Atlantic Ocean is your constant companion; while, on the 14th, golfers have to contend with the changing moods of the wind. This is a must play when in the Oeste region, the panoramic views from the clubhouse after your game make it all worth while.

Bom Sucesso Located on the Silver Coast, this new Donald Steel course opened for play in September 2008. It is a very good test of golf, at 6,228 metres in length. This 18-hole championship golf course stretches along the length of the resort binding, the Hotel & SPA and the other leisure facilities. The par-72 golf course has undulating fairway on the back nine. The greens can be a little undulating too in parts, but the condition is always maintained so players do have a fair chance of a good score. The bunkers have a rugged and intimidating look, forcing golfers to keep away from them. The course benefits from natural beauty and has panoramic views to keep you company for the round.

Golden Eagle
Golf do Botado
Golden Eagle
Part of the Atlantico Golfe Hotel, the 9-hole course is located 80km north of Lisbon in the quiet fishing port of Peniche. This is a hidden gem, and any who travel to play here are always surprised by its quality. It is a links style course, benefiting from its location beside the sea and natural terrain. There are some well positioned water features on the course as the course demands accuracy from the player. Bunkers are plentiful and wind always plays a factor. When in the area, a 2 hour break to play this course is not a bad idea.
Designed by American course designer Rocky Roquemore, this is a beautifully laid out golf championship course covers a vast area of land, with rolling hills and pine trees as its features. The clever use of over eighty bunkers and water features adds difficulty to this course, while adding a beauty and charm at the same time.
Campo Real
Vimeiro
CampoReal is a luxury 5-star resort in the west countryside of Portugal, just 30 minutes north of Lisbon and 20 minutes from the beaches of the Silver Coast. Set in tranquil rural surroundings, the uniquely charming 18 hole, par 72 golf course was designed by the renowned Donald Steel. Lying in the midst of dramatic rolling hills and wooded valleys, the course will challenge and delight even the most experienced players. The course played host the Portuguese Ladies Open on the Ladies European Tour in June 2010. Stunning views greet you on invitingly elevated tees, while the undulating greens test both your judgment and skill.
Another 9-hole resort course, Vimeiro is attached to the Hotel Golf Mar and is part of their facilities. This is a short course and golfers generally have a good chance of beating their handicap. Trouble on this course comes in the form of River Alcabrichel, which runs parallel to one side of this course. Accuracy is key at this course and its enjoyable for all levels of golfer. The feature hold would be the 191 metre par-3 9th, which require an uphill shot to a tight green.
After your game you will find a welcoming clubhouse and restaurant that serves traditional meals with excellent wines, most of which are produced on the property. In the late summer evenings groups of golden eagles regularly soar high in the sky, reminding golfers that this course truly is at one with nature.

PORTO E NORTE Porto e Norte is a region full of history, charm and character. It provides tourists with a unique scenery in a mountainous area, boasting wonderful natural parks, sloping hillsides, and the powerful waterways. The city of Porto is the second largest city in Portugal, after Lisbon. Its core industries are shipping and trade, owing to the Douro River. The ancient city of Porto is a world heritage site, boasting Romanesque chapels, baroque churches, historical monuments and twisting steets. It also is the much celebrated home of Port wine, from which its name is accredited to. Boat trips on the Douro River are very attractive and interesting for tourists, as you observe the vine-filled Douro valley that will eventually be cultivated in world-famous Port wines. The popular dish of “tripe is also associated with Porto, and chefs here have mastered the art of this appetising dish. 79

Vidago Palace Introduced in 1936, Vidago Palace is an established golf course that plays an important role in the golf product of Northern Portugal. The new layout was redesigned by Cameron & Powell, often praised for their specialist work in golf course design. They extended the course to a full eighteen hole, par-72 layout, that kept with the overall visual and spiritual charm of its natural smooth terrain. But Vidago Palace saves the best to last, as the final four holes are nothing short of breath taking, boasting fantastic views of its panorama, the Vidago Palace and the remote villages in the distance.

Estela It’s a simple fact that Irish golfers love a quality links course. At Estela Golf Course, you won’t be disappointed. Excluding the use of Bermuda grass, this is a course that ranks as high as the best links courses in Ireland. Built in 1988, this par-72 Championship course is located at only 20 minutes from Porto’s international airport and located in the lively summer resort of Povoa de Varzim. Owing to its exposed sandy terrain across 3 kilometres, punishing rough, influencing trade winds and quick greens, players that manage to hit their handicap at Estela should feel very pleased.

Vale Pisáo
Quinta da Barca
The Vale Pisão Golf Course has 9 holes (par 37 with 3266 meters) putting green and a practice range. The course layout follows the aesthetics of the terrain, fitting in naturally with the landscape and taking advantage of the slopes, the vegetation and the streams. This gives a varied layout, with interesting and balanced challenges, where shorter holes, of evident beauty and strategy, are mixed with more difficult, complicated holes. Designed to protect environmental values, the features of the Vale Pisão Golf Course, make it ideal for playing golf at the top level in terms of quantity, quality and variety.
In 1997, Quinta da Barca 9-hole course was opened for general play. It’s gentle design but playing at over 3800 metres from the back tees, this is not a simple course by any means. The greens can be quite undulating and cleverly placed bunkers and lakes provide obstacles to achieving a good score. For the second round of nine holes, there are a completely different set of tee boxes. Set in a magnificent setting along a river bank, the course is located at Esposende. The course is supported by a marina, spa, restaurants, shopping malls, and two aparthotels with a swimming-pool and tennis courts.
Club de Golf Miramar This is a 9-hole course, built in 1932 to encourage Portuguese nationals to take up the game of golf. It is a long-established golf course and one of the oldest in Portugal. Recent improvements have been made to its original design by the much celebrated course architect, Howard Swan.. The course can be found in a popular seaside resort along the north coast, running adjacent to the golden beaches of Espinho and Porto. Sand dunes and stunning ocean views are widespread on this exciting 9-hole course. Full catering and clubhouse facilities are available after your round in a friendly and welcoming environment.

Ponte de Lima
Ponte de Lima
Oporto
Ponte De Lima Golf Course is located some distance inland, away from the punishing northerly winds that can be gruelling on the links courses. It is a typically mountainous course that is set in heavily wooded terrain, distinctive to northern Portugal. Built in 1995, this par-71 course is spread across a vast six kilometres terrain, abundant in vegetation and it possesses some restored mansions that serve as service facilities. The two 9’s are dissimilar in design, the first nine set amongst age-old trees that passes though a raving, and the second nine are situated in the valley of Quinta de Pias, enclosed by vineyards, cornfields and apple and pear trees.
Porto’s links course portfolio is boosted by a genuine links course with deeply rooted values and traditions. Inaugurated in 1890, this par-71 course plays to a professional length of 5640 metres. This would be slightly shorter than modern day courses, but what’s lost in length on this old style course, is made up on narrow and undulating fairways, with strong northerly winds. The course is located 17 kilometres south of Porto, close to the wonderful beaches of Espinho. As part of the “Espinho Golf Week”, Oporto Golf Club has been hosting a competition called the “Skeffington Cup” since 1891 without any intermission.
Quinta do Fojo In stark contrast to the bigger courses in the area, Quinta do Fojo is a pleasant 6-hole course that plays to a total of par-60, when played three times. Unveiled in 1997, this enjoyable course is located across the river from Porto, which proves popular for midweek golfers to practise their shots on the shorter holes. Quinta do Fojo is a golf course you visit to sharpen your short game and every golfer could do with that.s it takes its place as one of the top courses along the coast.

Amarante Designed by Jorge Santana da Silva, Amarante is an 18-hole par-68 course that opened for play in 1997. Only a short 30-minute drive from Porto City Centre, Amarante Golf and its sister hotel Casa da Calcada are located in the town of Amarante at the Quinta da Deveza estate. Testimony to its design and maturity, the course was quickly chosen to host the National PGA Championships in 1999 and 2000. With the towering mountains of Marao and Aboboreira as its backdrop, the setting of Amarante course is typical of the stunning mountaineous scenery of Northern Portugal. Its waterfalls and lakes provide a pleasant experience for the golfer. Located at 600 metres above sea level, its no surprise that Amarantes blueprint is one of hills, slopes and undulations. Starting at the 1st hole, your tee shot is elevated to a 495 metre par5. Its narrow fairways demand accuracy off the tee, and lakes that are brought into play on 3, 7, 12 and 17 demand respect.
Casa Da Calçada Relais & Chateaux A short 38km drive outside Porto city is the fairy-tale village of Amarante, located halfway from Oporto and the luxurious landscapes from the Douro valley, on the bank of the Rio Tamega. Tourists have been coming to Amarante for many years, wanting to take advantage of the region’s natural beauty and majestic scenery, and ancient creations such as the Roman Bridge over the river Tamega. One of the most visited hotels in the region is a charming hotel called Casa da Calçada, a 16th century palace that was wonderfully restored and converted into a hotel in 2001. The charismatic hotel is a leading rendezvous place for the political and intellectual figures, and widely regarded by the Portuguese Government as a building of high architectonical, historical and cultural relevance, often regarded as one of the most emblematic and representative of Portuguese hospitality. Casa da Calçada is one of the Relais & Chateaux properties, which radiates in luxury and splendour. Its high quality standards, unequalled amenities and warm courteous staff provide a consistently hospital environment and atmosphere. The spacious and comfortable bedrooms and suites feature stunning views out over the river and town square, all with modern furnishings. By night, the award winning Michelin star restaurant is the perfect place to go on a culinary journey of discovery. For golfers, fantastic packages such as the “Gourmet and Golf Package” always prove popular, with golf being provided on the hotels sister course, Amarante Golf and the five 18-hole courses that surround this exciting region. www.casadacalcada.com

Palheiro Golf
Club de Golf Santo Da Serra
Porto Santo
Host venue to the Madeira Open European Tour event each year since 1993, this picturesque course is a Robert Trent Jones that opened in 1991. It offers fantastic panoramic views over the ocean and is one of the most breathtaking mountain courses in Europe. Because it is built on very irregular terrain at an altitude of 670 metres above sea level and in an area of profuse vegetation, the fulfilling of this project required a huge effort in every sense. Nonetheless, Trent Jones succeeded in giving the 27 holes, (the third nine-hole loop was opened in October 1998) a logical, interdependent design. One of the most spectacular holes is hole number 4 (on the Machico course), a par 3, where the drive to the green is played over a ravine filled with very dense vegetation. The whole course provides players with most extraordinary views.
Spreading out over the idyllic island of Porto Santo, the layout of the course was planned in such a way as to blend harmoniously with the landscape and to respect the island’s ecosystems, taking advantage of the native plant species and the various lakes already existing there. It is an extensive and demanding course set in a spectacular landscape, one that is capable of attracting not only professional players, but also less experienced golfers, being divided into two different areas. The southern course comes close to the traditional style of the best American courses, with a number of lakes and the island’s long beach as a backdrop. The northern course is a made more difficult by high cliffs and combines the best features of British links courses with spectacular scenery, providing an unrepeatable challenge for golfers.
Palheiro Golf It offers fantastic panoramic views over the ocean and is one of the most breathtaking mountain courses in Europe. 90
Situated close to the famous gardens of Quinta do Palheiro, which date back to the beginning of the nineteenth century that are famous for their wide range of exotic flora, the Palheiro course offers fabulous views over Funchal bay, the sea and the Ilhas Desertas in the distance. The par-72 course was designed by the architect Cabell Robinson, a former assistant of Robert Trent Jones, who had already done work in Portugal and took care to make the most of the hills, mountain peaks and deep valleys that are a typical feature of the Madeira landscape, in order to provide golfers with an exciting and competitive round.

AZORES Enjoy the popular island culture on the Azores Islands, set in stunning natural surrounds. The Azores Islands are an archipelago of nine Islands in the Atlantic Ocean. The name Azores was derived from a Portuguese word “azures, which translated is the plural of the word blue. The islands are peaceful, quiet and scenic. The island is full of blue and green lagoons that are shadowed by high peaked mountains. Festivals are popular and tourism attractions are plentiful. But a holiday to the Azores is all about unwinding, grasping a break from a hectic daily life and enjoying nature at its best.
93
Batalha Designed by Cameron Powell this 6,435metre course is set on a historic battle site, from which the course name derives. This is the newest golf course in the Azores, a welcome addition to a golf product that is growing in the Azores. It is located on a plain close to Pinta Delgada, and built on volcanic rock. The fact that the course was built on volcanic rock created difficulties in its design and has resulted in a spectacular contrast between the green playing areas and the dry woods standing on rocky soil to the side of these. The holes are long and wide with large undulating greens, flanked by tall trees. The course has been designed to hold major golf events, such as the Azores Open, which takes place here each year.

Furnas
Built in 1954, this Championship course is situated close to Angra do HeroĂsmo, the capital of Terceira island. Tall pine-trees, brightly-coloured flowers (particularly azaleas and hydrangeas), several natural lakes and a superb level of upkeep, all lend this course much of the natural beauty of the Azores. Several tees for each hole also give the course a championship flavour and make playing here a truly unforgettable experience. The club is run by a tripartite group, consisting of representatives from the Regional Government of the Azores, the Azores Air Zone and the American Command.
Built in 1936, Furnas golf course was updated in 1986 with an additional 9-holes making it up to a 6,232metre 18-hole course. The course has full matured and now it would be impossible to distinguish between the new and old nines. It is located around 40 minutes from Ponta Delgada, in pleasant surroundings with stunning beauty. The greens are small and undulating, while the tree lined fairways are very tight. It hosts an international golfing event each year called the Sata Azores Open - in conjunction with the Batalha course.
Several tees for each hole also give the course a championship flavour and make playing here a truly unforgettable experience.
