Eden Project to host rescheduled Drum and Bass Awards

The 247 Magazine sponsored South West Drum and Bass Awards were postponed due to the extreme weather in Feb (which saw Exeter and the surrounding area receive it’s heaviest snowfall in 30 years!) but they’ve now been rescheduled and will be held on Friday 1 May 2009 at the Eden Project, St Austell, Cornwall. The promoters have teamed up with the hugely successful Eden based Arts Café to host the event at the amazing Eden Project in Cornwall. They will be taking over the whole site and creating a number of different arenas catering for the underground sounds of drum and bass, breaks, funk/jazz and hip hop, creating an unmissable mashup of amazing music and art. Awards co-promoter Nigel Muntz said, “After the disappointment of the postponement in Feb, we knew we had to do something special, and partnering with Eden’s monthly Arts Café event at this amazing venue for the awards is perfect – this is the first time anything like this taken place at the Eden Project and it is going to be huge!” The line-up is being adjusted for the new venue, but we can can confirm will include Andy C and Rennie Pilgrem amongst others. Tickets go on sale early March. Existing ticket holders’ tickets will be valid for the new date. For more information, please visit swdnbawards.com

Jamie Lidell recently bagged the ‘Best PopRock Album’ at the Independent Music Awards. The authentic soul sound is all the rage right now, but he’s a man who definitely does it justice. Listening to ‘Another Day’ from his recent album, you could be mistaken into thinking you’ve just unearthed a lost Motown treasure. Jamie’s voice has true depth and a rich tone, and he’s been making records for over a decade, so you can’t mess with the man’s credentials. As well as being armed with buckets of creativity, he also records for the super-cool Warp Records. So once again, 247 bring you another exclusive interview with an awesome and exciting artist. You always come up with great melodies, unlike a lot of soul singers who settle for the generic heard-it-all-before stuff. What keeps you fresh and creative? I gotta admit that a lot of the time, wanting to keep it fresh comes from getting bored easily. There are a lot of ingredients swimming about in my soup. I’m glad it still tastes good. You use an authentic soul production and sound. How easy or difficult is it to capture this vibe? I am drawn to the quality of old sound recording techniques for sure but I’ve rarely taken it all to the extremes of say the Dap Kings who have really mastered that “capturing an era” thing. I like to get involved with all aspects of making a record from the mics to the faders in the mix. The playing style is the most important thing to give recordings a grounding in history of course. Mocky was my right hand man on the making of Jim. His playing really coloured the music and gave it so much flavour. You’ve got just one chance to prove Jamie Lidell is the man: which song of yours will do the trick and why? Multiply I guess although I find questions like this impossible to answer with conviction. I think there’s something about the way Multiply has simplicity on its side and an effortless slightly shabby funk that makes it very me. Tell us how you hooked up with Warp Records, and describe the benefits of being on an independent label? I got to know Squarepusher. He put in a good word for me at the label after I made muddlin gear for a mutual friend that ran a small label Spymania. Warp liked the potential they heard on my manic offering and we signed a big old deal. My voice clinched it. Independent labels let you get on with making your music which is really essential to sanity as an artist. There’s nothing worse than a suit telling you how to sound. The cottage industry process of the independent means all the decisions that are made are easy to trace. There’s less hidden. I like that. With the recent changes in the music industry, is it harder or easier for you as an artist, and in which ways? It’s harder to make cash. No doubt. The gig scene is less certain than it was since everyone’s feeling the pinch! It’s not easier in anyway for me right now. I DO believe that

you can build a great community around you these days though with the internet. You can reach people instantly and they can get involved in your career. That’s still so new and it’s hard to step away from the familiar models that have defined the industry up until now. Imagination rules and that’s exciting. You recently won an award at the Independent Music Awards. What other artists were you up against, and do you like any of them? I actually remain blissfully unaware of all that. I’m not ungrateful. I must be honest though… I don’t really care for awards… Are you likely to resume your work with Super Collider? Oh one day! We must. Cristian is a genius. I miss working next to him on stuff. On your myspace it says you’re from Berlin but I believe you were actually born in Cambridgeshire - so when did you move to Berlin and why?! Berlin was my home from 2000 to 2008. I moved for love in the beginning and left because I got tired of it being the place to be. The joy of Berlin has somewhat flown for me. Who or what do you like at the moment? I’m feeling Fela Kuti, Daniel Johnson, PJ Harvey… All during my life I’ve tended to go through obsessions. Right now I’m feeling simple, stark songs. And a few all-time favourites: Prince pre Batman… Sun Ra – love the man. I keep getting back into Can. They are just pure inspiration to me on so many levels. From sound to follow through… legends. Curtis Mayfield… and so on and so on! You’re doing a festival in Turkey in May. Any festival action planned for the UK? I’m over this month and that’ll be it for me in the UK this year. I’m playing the Bloc festival and I’m buzzing about that. I have a heavy show lined up. Gonna drop the uncut funk! This year though will strictly be about set up in New York, my new base, and making a new record. You’re playing in Exeter this month. Have you played there before? If I ever played Exeter before (I think I did many moons ago) I would have been drinking like a fish. The booze was long. I’ve since quit. I remember almost nothing of the drinking times. Sad but true… sorry Exeter. I still love you… even if I can’t remember your charms!

This month, Jamie Lidell plays Bloc Festival (which takes place from 13 – 15 March at Butlins in Minehead) then returns to Exeter Phoenix for a gig on 15 March as part of Vibraphonic Festival. jamielidell.com myspace.com/jamielidell Words: Arash Torabi magazine | 11

Words: Cameron

Their track titles may broach such gloomy subjects as substance abuse and political genocide, but Bull See Red’s rollicking punk stylings and hook-laden rock makes for a decidedly uplifting noise. They also have plenty of reasons to be cheerful. After forming in the autumn of 2008 they collaborated with producer Paul Reeve (Muse/Razorlight) and scored a national tour that kicks off this month with headline shows at London’s Borderline and – their first gig on home turf – Exeter’s Cavern. With the tape rolling, Bull See Red tell all about their music’s need for speed, the secret behind a good performance, and the importance of Van Halen…

Amy McGill (bass): So instead of songs about murders and zombies, we’re moving onto titles about sniffing glue. Definitely happier. (laughs)

Once you’d got together, did you sit down and discuss what sort of band you wanted to be? JH: We didn’t set out to write in any certain genre… I’m sure any band would say that. The only rule we gave ourselves was to be upbeat tempo-wise as we needed something different from the bands we’d been in before. We needed more pace. But basically I think we’re writing what comes naturally. There’s nothing overly clever about it, we’re a straight-up heavy rock band.

Onto your own records… any releases planned? AM: The five tracks we recorded we recently decided not to release. We’re going to leave these as a trial promotional thing to give away. We’ve got too many songs. When we go for the proper release, it’ll be an album.

Let’s talk about the gigs. Specifically, what can we expect from your homecoming at the Cavern? AM: A few nerves…but you’ll get the best performance out of us on a nervous night. Also expect loads of energy. I’m sick of bands who get on stage, stay stock still and look bored. I just wonder what they’re in it for.

Which records have had their biggest impact on you? Joe Ings (guitar/backing vocals): In the genre in which we’re playing? Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness by the Smashing Pumpkins. It’s a huge and emotionally complex record. Starting with the obvious, how did it all begin? AM: If it’s just guitar music then Led Zeppelin IV – I was raised Jake Hitchcock (vocals/guitar): We all had our own bands to varying degrees of success, but a year ago started collaborating on it – massive riffs and heavy drums. Alex Maynard (drums): Therapy?’s Babyteeth was the first thing here and there. On deciding we wanted to start a band and move in the same direction, the tap just came on and the songs I bought. Actually I’ve got this big northern Irish thing at the moment with bands like Fighting With Wire and In Case of Fire. wouldn’t stop flowing. In a couple of months we had 12 tracks. We got our own recordings together and luckily got Paul Reeve JH: (laughs) I was actually going to say Van Halen’s 1984. It was my first album – I was eight years old and at boarding school. on board to help with postproduction and masters. So with It was the first rebellious music I’d heard. I’d also say Guns n these tracks, and with a hand from 2020 Agency, we went out there with a few shows before Christmas. A few shows became Roses’ Appetite for Destruction, which terrified my parents. They were the last true great rock n roll band for me. a full-on tour and here we are.

A glance over your song titles reveals a lot of motifs of death… JH: These songs are about my experiences and other people’s experiences that have mattered to me. Some of them along the way have been bloody. But I am starting to write happier songs… with happier titles.

And the masterplan for 2009? JH: To reach all the far corners of the UK, work as hard as we can and - you know - look forward to the new things presenting themselves.

FILLTHEVOID Fillthevoid has been doing pieces for over ten years now. He’s managed to stamp his mark on the graff scene, achieving success by being commissioned to do artwork for Ian Brown’s latest album. 247 caught up with him to find out just what makes him tick… What’s your preferred method of graffiti – stencil or freehand? It’s always been stencils, ever since coming across some of Banksy’s early pieces in Bristol in the mid to late 90s, he definitely planted the seed. I love the immediacy of stencils, it’s hit and run. Who inspires you? Guys like Banksy, Shepard Fairey, Dolk, Mantis and Dan Wiltz are big sources of inspiration to me in the graff world. I used to skate a lot so deck artwork by Wes Humpston, VCJ, Andy Jenkins, Mike Hill and Todd Bratrud has always been part of my subconscious. In graphic design I look up to Shilo, The Designers Republic (RIP), Universal Everything and The Ronin. Also illustrators like Hydro 74, Guy McKindly and Adam Haynes are doing some nice work. Other forms of creativity also feed my work, including musical artists like Gill Scott Heron and High Contrast; spoken word poets like Saul Williams and even stand up comics like Bill Hicks (RIP). They all help to drive the thought processes.

How does your artistic background affect the way you work as a graff artist? I went to art college then specialised in graphic design. The principles of both graphics and street art definitely overlap. As a graphic designer you learn how to distil an idea down until you reach the core of what you are trying to say. Also it taught me how to set up multiple coloured stencils. The first piece I ever did was two colours and it’s basically the same process as setting up screenprint artwork. What’s the most exciting thing that has happened to you during your graff career? My favourite music artist is Ian Brown so the night before one of his gigs I did a stencil of his face on the stage door. Apparently he saw it, loved it and tried to track me down! Eventually we did hook up and it became the artwork illustration for his latest album, The World Is Yours. Off the back of that I did the artwork for the two singles from that album, Illegal Attacks and Sister Rose. That was a massive buzz, collaborating with someone I have so much respect for. Where would you most like to be in ten years time? Teaching my son the street art, ha ha! I want to just keep doing my thing but expand into new modes of expression like animating my pieces, maybe even a short film. I also want to get into t-shirt design and start my own label. Basically I’m just going to keep filling the void!

Soul Life on the Barbican in Plymouth is currently showing/selling selected pieces of Fillthevoid’s work.

@ fillthevoid.co.uk We have an exclusive Fillthevoid hand stencilled original on hardboard to give away to one lucky reader. To enter the competition, email 247@outofhand.co.uk with VOID in the subject line and tell us how you’d fill the void, in no more than 50 words. Comp closes 31 March. No Hassle

(!K7 Records) Bit of a silly name, but this is an album of laidback grooves, using real instruments and digital techniques and created by Richard Dorfmeister (of Kruder fame) and Rupert Huber. There’s nothing here for the chin-strokers: ‘No Hassle’ is an unpretentious album, and not in any way ‘experimental’ or up its own arse. You either want to chill, or you don’t. Arash Torabi

A band eager to encourage the cyclical nature of trends, Nebraska’s Ladyfinger (ne) celebrate the twin peaks of pre-grunge a la Janes Addiction and post-hardcore a la Bluetip, Pilot To Gunner and Jawbox, Various artists which could easily have ended in pale (compiled by Amorphous Androgynous) comparison but actually sounds pretty A Monstrous Psychedelic Bubble fucking lovely for the most part. The artists selected span 4 decades, and many styles are represented here: folk, space Ruarri Joseph rock, ambient, funk, sitars and the freakBoth Sides Of The Coin out/totally-lost-it kind of grooves. Tommy (Pip Productions) Graham’s ‘Sahajiya’ is one of my favourites. There are more well-know names here too, like Donovan, Tim Buckley & Miles Davis. Wriggling free from Atlantic Records’ Proper head gear. artistically stifling grip, our Ruarri has now Arash Torabi set about indulging in his woozy, acoustic whims, retaining Jack Johnson’s irritating nonchalance but breathing Westcountry Original Soundtrack grace and melancholy into its lungs. The Notorious B.I.G was a genius rapper. Independence suits you, lad. His humour, wordplay and ability to tell a Backbone story have never been equalled. Most of the tracks here are by Biggie himself, with some great choices: ‘Kick in the Door’ and ‘Warning’- B.I.G at his best, and a shit one, Left Side Brain the painfully lengthy ‘Notorious Thugs’, Collider featuring Bone Thugs-N-Harmon. Luckily (Sugar Shack) they’ve also included his awesome rare first single ‘Party and Bullshit’, but I can’t listen to his son rapping along to ‘One Bristolians, Left Side Brain, have been More Chance’- it’s too creepy. However, working hard not to tread in anyone else’s Biggie fans will appreciate the 3 previously Britrock footsteps. J Dilla

Dillanthology 1 (Rapster Records) When the sad news of the iconic hip hop producer’s death reached people, the outpouring of grief was unprecedented, the internet was awash with slogans, t-shirts, club nights etc all wanting to pay their respect. For those of you unaware of J Dilla’s greatness this is a great place to start, standout tracks are hard to choose as every one is so precious, Common’s “The Light” has been bootlegged and re rubbed so much but nothing can touch the simple beauty of the original. Quality hip hop with non jiggy MCs and an untouchable sound. For those who need to know, this is the place to get to know. Aldo Vanucci

Random Hand Inhale / Exhale

(Rebel Alliance) About five years ago, the nation had pretty much written off ska-punk as a cringeworthy, sonic faux-pas – probably due to a slew of truly bad purveyors of the sub-genre. West Yorkshire bruisers, Random Hand, may have single-handedly resuscitated the beast from its marginal slumber with a sophomore album that tags a huge metallic rock punch onto its skank’n’roll; resulting in the kind of mash-up that would satiate the appetites of Capdown and Agnostic Front fans alike. Lauryn Hill

The Miseducation Of (Ruff House Records)

This 1998 album stands as one of the greatest modern soul albums ever recorded. With contributions from Carlos Santana, D’Angelo, Mary J Blige and more Lauryn created a deep and meaningful album. Using doo-wop backing vocals and lush instrumentation over boom-bap beats with a lyrical eye on the uplifting elements of gospel and the poignant reflection of soul music. Every song is worth a mention which is rare, and she manages to be devout without ever being proselytizing. SUPERDUPERDAN!

The first openly homosexual man voted into significant U.S. public office in 1977, Milk’s brief but committed career inspired a generation of activists before he was assassinated the following year by a disturbed colleague. The phenomenal cast includes Josh Brolin, Diego Luna and James Franco, but the standout performance comes from Sean Penn whose turn as the charismatic politician glows with passion, humanity and wit.

LIVE Released: 6 March WATCHMEN (TBC)

Director: Zach Snyder Starring: Jackie Earle Haley and Patrick Wilson. 2008/US/163 mins Set in1985, the film follows a group of former vigilantes as tensions heighten between the United States and the Soviet Union. The story is set in an alternate reality where superheroes exist, Richard Nixon is still president, Vietnam was won by the South, and tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union are at an all-time high. The vigilante Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley) is investigating the murder of a former superhero, the Comedian (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), and uncovers a plot to discredit and murder various heroes. Rorschach discovers a far wider-ranging conspiracy involving his colleagues’ past which could completely change the course of history. This is film is likely to split opinion between those who are obsessed with the graphic novel, and those who want to enjoy the pleasures of a more simplified film.

A long way from Hathaway’s Bride Wars, this is a refreshing variation on the well-worn theme. Demme produces a freeform ensemble drama that is rich, distinctive and genuinely emotional.

I must confess i have no truck with the music industry (spit!). It fucking sucks. I even hate using the phrase, almost as much as i hate the phrase ‘bogus asylum seeker’ (there’s no such thing). The music industry (spit!) Lures bands into its fold, throws money at them, thrusts them into the spotlight, takes over their ethos, cuts their toenails, dilutes their spirit, and inevitably drops them in the gutter once that first album fails to claw back the money that was thrown at the unwitting artists in the first place. It may be very industrious but it has little to do with music. And what of the cuddly independents? If they’re not actually a subsidiary of a major label, some of them act like little majors, anyway. Afraid to take a chance on something fresh, leftfield, innovative, dangerous or a little out of tune. And still, ultimately, dancing to the paymaster’s jig. So should we care about the changing fortunes of the music biz? Of course not. It’s been changing from day one. When was the last time you saw a turntable with a 78rpm setting? What is grandpa supposed to do when he wants to play his beloved al bowlly and george gershwin platters? Why is 7” vinyl now only seen as a novelty? When was the last time you and your family all sat around the radio and listened with hushed reverence like it was the sole voice of reason? Why are tape cassettes not a regular format any more? Don’t you miss sticking a pen in one of the cassette spools and spinning it around your head, like a football rattle, to rewind it because it saved on batteries? (Believe it or not, during the mid-‘80s, cassettes accounted for more than half of the world’s total music sales.) And who remembers the 8 track cartridge? I certainly do. Listening to smokey or ‘60s bee gees classics in the back of my dad’s ford cortina mk 2 on the way home from a good summer day’s fun at paignton. The reality is, everything gets marginalised eventually, but music is and will always be made by people who simply can’t not make music, regardless of who’s buying. It’s natural.

Now we’re at the point where cd sales are plummeting because of a digital phenomenon that removes the middlemen from the equation. When emi grumbled at their misfortunes in 2002 (no credit crunch then), i, for one, raised a glass. The fact that they paid mariah carey £19m to end her contract with them just shows the stupidly lofty levels that those kinds of corporate monsters operate at. Maybe they should have made better choices and stuck by creative artists that meant something rather than ploughing all their resources into robbie williams and his litany of self-absorbed and laughable inadequacy coupled with mind-numbingly mediocre songs. And that’s an all-too common story in the upper echelons of the music industry (spit!).

As long as there are hundreds of thousands of bands/individuals making music (and by christ there are) there will always be ways of getting it out there for people to listen to, love or loathe. Music doesn’t suffer from recessions. Capital does. Music doesn’t care what medium it’s presented. Capital does. Music isn’t about marketing. Capitalism is.

So, throw caution, and wads of greedy ceo greenbacks, to the wind. Do what you want. Spotify legally, burn illegally, buy cds, steal cds, buy records, make tapes, swap tapes, share files, trawl through myspace, go to gigs, blag in free to gigs, pick up instruments, form bands, play gigs, split up bands, form more bands, record your music and let me access it however i want because, let’s face it, you’re not gonna stop me. Whatever you do, keep playing and keep listening because that’s all that really matters. And if the giant music corporations fall ungraciously from their ivory towers through a combined force of recession, progression and transgression? Well that’s a bonus.

Firstly, some questions. Did indie label distributors, pinnacle entertainment, go bankrupt because of the recession or because of rocketing internet sales? Are less people buying cds because of the recession or because they’re over-priced by an industry (spit!) That couldn’t give two shits about the consumer? Are major labels in a kerfuffle because of the recession or because of virulent illegal downloading? Are less people attending shows because of the recession or because it’s too bloody cold to go out?
